Reviews (page 3 of 13)
10/10, loved the album and Amy's voice is insane.
Amazing
It was great
I liked it better than her other one
Great album. Amy Winehouse was so talented, and this showed off just a taste of her capabilities.
What happened to her?
Great music. The world’s missing a truly talented singer.
Oh, Amy, Amy, Amy. Frank is not the tight R&B masterpiece that Back To Black is, but in many ways, I think that in many ways it’s a more representative album of just who Amy was. Confessional art lives or dies on the artists ability to convey their own sense of self, not just through the content of the art, but through form and structure. Frank as an album is messy, oddly structured, and probably overlong. But because of the brilliance of the songwriting, I understand completely how the woman who wrote these songs put them together as an album that was messy, oddly structured and probably overlong. And it breaks my fucking heart, every single time
Wow! Never had listened to Winehouse before, and didn’t quite know what to expect. What a voice, and what a talent. How do you too a debut album like this? Sadly, her voice is no longer with us…
This was a good album. I enjoyed it.
Beautiful, love Amy winehouse
1. Durchhören war schon wirklich gut. Grandiose Stimme. Songwriting und Musikalität herausragend. Aufnahme auch sehr gut. Könnte ein Klassiker für mich werden.
Her voice is ever so strong, her music ever so vulnerable. I’m in awe and in pain at the same time whenever I listen to her. That’s why she speaks to my soul more than any other artist. P.S. I love you forever, Amy
Such an amazing album. I already knew it pretty well but I loved listening to it again and again. I liked 8 tracks, but really I like the whole thing. In our group there was some talk about how this album is more like recent R&B while "Back to Black" sounds older in a good way, and is the better album. Maybe? I don't know. This album is still very easily a 5-star.
Amy er den største og viktigste stemmen i jazzen i min tid. Debutplaten er så sjukt bra at jeg ikke har ord.
I was never cool enough to know what a talent she was. Her timing and vocal expressions were very much her own. Such an amazing talent taken away way too soon.
Excellent mix of jazz, hip hop, and reggae influences. Very Lauryn Hill-ish.
Loved this album winehouse is an amazing singer and lyricist. Phenomenal
humorous, breezy and uber-jazzy. the late and really great amy winehouse's debut album is a spectacle of trip-hop jazzy beatflips, sexy, blunt and honest lyrics, and a REALLY bold and romantic atmosphere all mesh together and make a truly great soul album that i can't get tired of. it's really a shame her life ended the way it had to, but i'm blessed to have listened to her works.
9/10 Genia absoluta.
Loved it. All the jazz tracks were awesome
i’ll listen to amy regardless of the scenario. queen.
I don’t know what I was expecting, except that I was expecting to hate this. Shocked to find myself loving it
Loved her rich, sultry voice.
Must have!
RIP Amy gone too soon 😔. Love the bossanova and bluesy grooves. Such a great debut album
yes
I had not listened to any Amy Winehouse music before. This album was better than I thought it would be. I don’t normally listen to music I’m not familiar with, but I thoroughly enjoyed this selection and I plan on listening to more of her music.
Eindelijk weer eens een die ik uit de kast kon pakken. Lekker genieten maar wel minder dan haar andere album. De b kant is wel lekkerder dan de a kant Rate m 4.5 maar wel lekker naar boven afgerond.
Fire album. Love Amy’s lyrics and her wit on a lot of her tracks. She seems very honest about herself and her relationships. And of course she’s also an amazing, soulful singer.
Beautiful voice. Such a loss.
She will always be remembered for Back To Black. I gave Back To Black 5 stars. This is at least as good, but it doesn't have the big hits everybody knows. Favorite song: Help Yourself.
Relaxing
Only heard the hits, really good stuff
This is an unbelievable debut album. Her voice sounds so rich, so mature... This would appear to be the work of an experienced artists This album is timeless - while she was of a particular era, this could have been released anywhere in the last fifty years. Great, soulful mix.
Is there anything worse than scatting? Worst intro to an objectively good song and album ever? Immediately hit with 2003 language that would get you canceled Immediately twenty years later, was it always this bad? Even if it was always bad, I feel like Amy was particularly bad for it... I don't know how anyone listens to this album without hating every music industry cunt who profited from her whilst watching, and even encouraging, her spiral. Even the songs that don't hit with me are objectively good. I'd never put No Greater Love on; it's cringy, saccharine, and trying too hard to sound exactly like (complete with vomit inducing fake vinyl surface sound) the oldies it's stolen from, and it's still clearly brimming with talent.
One of the best album I ever listen to. And a 10 out of 10, no skipping!
5*
Lovely hip hurray
Yet another 'oh I get the fuss now' album
The upbeat jazzy music paired with Winehouse's soulful bluesy vocals is just too good. Really not a bad song on the album, my favs are Intro/Stronger than me, You sent me flying/cherry, In My Bed, and Mr Magic. Will definitely be listening to this one more often now.
When thee THOT gets soulful. This was so smooth, so cool, so pretty. Like the most sex positive lounge singer ever. Love it.
know this one
I really, really love this album. The jazz instrumental is catchy and fun and the singing is great. It was very upsetting to learn of her passing.
Cool ! Feel good vibes
Anything Amy I love.
Oh to be the flutist on In My Bed. This is fantastic, sexy, heartbreaking, and beautiful.
Objectively good album
JFC. Why didn't she make it longer? Beauty, soul, R&B, UK white trash brilliance. I cried a little partway through. Maybe I'm Caitlin's ladyboy. Love it. Every second.
Fucking. Banger.
Amy Winehouse was such a talent. Her blend of soul, jazz, pop,… with her unflinching lyrics set her apart in the best way.

Her voice will move over you like honey. Damn! I don’t know why I’ve let Amy Winehouse be off my radar for so long thinking she was too “mainstream” for me.
I have often remarked about how much I appreciate hearing pre-fame albums in this collection, even if I don't love them as much as the "heyday" albums. This felt as wonderful as Back to Black, although it was all new to me. Absolutely glorious, and making me so sad that there isn't more.
Oh, I loved this one! It was all new to me and I was thrilled to be introduced.
Wonderful voice, great style. I'm glad for another from her after the impeccable Back to Black so long ago.
This album makes me sad for all the obvious reasons. The wonderful, melodic tunes are tinged with such melancholy… I don’t think Amy’s tragic end is entirely responsible for that. Was nice to sit back and have a toast to such a phenomenal talent with a tear in my eye, even if it was a little more depressing than her later album.
What an artist. Wish she was still with us today. Great soulful and emotional voice. This is an underrated album of hers. It leans more into the hip-hop/r&b sphere than her vintage soul inspired "Back to Black" album. Very appropriate for the time it was released. I also hear a lot of jazz influence on here. Shout out to the production as well. Very nice.
Sultry and sexy and sassy. Great album.
Heard before: no I'm really surprised I've never heard these tracks... and I thought I was so sure about Amy Winehouse. I guess I had babies during her prime, and that's what happens to the brain of a new dad. Anyway, this is so much more natural, soulful, and relaxed than I expected - more Stax than Motown. I really love the production (esp Salaam Remi, another guy who I need to know better) - neo-soul, jazzy cabaret, quiet storm R&B, and trip-hoppy beats seamlessly weave in and out. But her singing and her songs are the real stars - hilarious and heartbreaking, a mix of confessions and wry humor. And despite lyrics that can be raw and in your face, her voice has an underrated softness and subtlety. Even with all this in the blender, it never feels forced or overworked; it's so easy, almost casual - the hardest thing to do. NOW I'm sad about her loss. Man... Top tracks: What Is It About Men, Moody's Mood For Love/Teo Licks, Fuck Me Pumps
Love Amy
I listen to this once every couple weeks. Easy 5
This is briljant
Iconic <3
Classic voice
Every song another vibe. From the deeps to every high. Great vocals
first time listening
Amazing album. Her voice is just so powerful on this. Loved the instrumentals on this as well. All round a great experience.
Why not "Back to Black"? Still, beautiful voice, great album.
Amy winehouse
Perfect
awesome jazz i loved it nothing like ive ever heard before will continue 2 listen
Good artist
Einfach Amy, einfach eine tolle Stimme und leider zu früh gestorben.
Her voice in just unreal
Lo ame todo. No sabía que Amy tenían un disco así. Lo disfrute mucho 10/10 lo guardamos.
Frábær frá upphafi til enda. Einstakur talent.
Phenomenal. She was a massive talent and—though beloved while alive—underrated.
fantastic. absolutely genius of amy.
awe :( Amy. There's something so sad about her death and hits me harder knowing addiction. She left us a lot of gold. And she was so pretty! What an amazing artist! Her style is beautiful. Old and jazzy and modern all in one. Lovin this album.
great
Rating: 9/10 Best songs: You sent me flying, Fuck me pumps, In my bed, Take the box, Help yourself, Amy Amy Amy
My Amy Winehouse favorite album, no question about it. I love these songs because they bring back memories of hard days I was able to overcome and also because I love this Amy, the one before all the excess, the one before turning into Billie Holiday, singing playfully her songs. This is one of the albums I play when I need to cheer me up.
Never in a thousand years would I think I would give this album a 5/5, but I liked it that much. Even listened through a second time. Every song is good.
Amazing from start to finish
Wonderful. Had never listened to the full album. What a tragedy. So much talent.
Amazing album. Left us too soon. 5/5
Erg relaxt, GOED
Ughhhhh just fucking insanely great and amazing. I used to see Amy Winehouse in her final years in a pub in Kentish Town when I was doing uni drinking and avoiding revision for vet school exams haha. Her story really touched me and I always really appreciated her music even while she was alive but maybe even more so since she passed. I have a lot of time for this kind of jazzy version of intense story-telling. Her lyrics are genius and the tunes she wrote are unbelievably catchy. I always love listening around the hits to some of her lesser known songs. This album certainly helped me deal with some tough things like grief and heartbreak at certain points in my life and I think it's incredible.
Well it was a bloody 5 star before I even start. One of my favourite albums of all time - I don't know where to start! I just think it is a beautifully crafted album where you get a real sense of what Amy's life was like in London at the time. Her relationships, her nights out (taking the piss out of certain girls - but in a fond way! (Fuck me pumps))), her love for writing music on her guitar (Cherry), falling in love with crap men (Help Yourself) and her messy attitude to relationships (I Heard Love Is Blind). So many of the songs are so funny and include punchlines, like I heard love in blind. I love how to the point and unafraid she was to talk about certain shortcomings in her songs - FRANK as such. Other than knowing the obvious Amy Winehouse songs, it was Help Yourself that got into her properly. Someone I met travelling (Malaysia at the time I believe) told me how pure and beautiful she thought that song was - I just how on the nose it was. I listened and totally agreed - now my most favourite song. I've loved all the documentaries about Amy Winehouse and what I've learned about her song writing - like how she, before the music, is a poet and lyricist and that is SO the strength of these songs. But her love of jazz means these songs are musically complex and surprising but pleasing. Just big big love for this - a joy to write a review and sing along to EVERY WORD. I became a fan of Amy Winehouse she died, it was odd to go through the heartbreak of her death well after she actually died. I'm so struck by her talent and if only she'd grown older to write more music, and obviously enjoyed her life beyond 27. Her music was so wise and mature, knowing some of these songs were written as a teen! 5 bloody stars and I rarely give these
It's an absolute belter, one of my favourite albums of all time. Just perfection.
Great
muito bom, fadinho agradabilíssimo
Wow what a record. Stronger Than Me into You Sent ME Flying/Cherry is a ridiculous opening. I felt the tracks may have been a bit long but the soundcloud era has damaged my attention span. Long Live Amy
Before she was Back in Black she introduced us to Frank. That seems to be the appropriate word…Frank. An uncompromising and classic sound seems at times throwback and others wholly what was missing for the time. A WONDERFUL record. The world could’ve used more Amy Winehouse.
wow
Amy's voice will always be so charming. Love the instrumentals, but it definitely wouldn't be anything without Amy herself. Amazing album, such a pleasant listen. Fave track(s): Stronger Than Me, Fuck Me Pumps, In My Bed
Discazo
THIS IS A FLAWLESS ALBUM. INCREDIBLE. BEAUTIFUL. JAZZY AND FUN.
This came out when I was a teenager, so I totally missed it, and then I was out of the country when Back to Black came out, so I totally missed the Amy Winehouse boat altogether. I get it now.
Brilliant and amazing album from a brilliant and amazing artist.
I think this was my first time really listening to Amy Winehouse; and she had a powerhouse of a voice
The ultimate Saturday morning album
Gritty and vibrant. Such a soulful voice.
Pretty nice, Amy's voice is quite powerful as they said, and the music went hand in hand with her voice.
This is my favorite album from this list in a long while. I will have to keep coming back to this album. Amy Winehouse bridges the gap from vocal jazz to neo-soul and trip-hop in such elegant ways throughout the album. Additionally, she has really beautiful lyrics. Highlights: All. Listen to this one front to back.
Just Amy
Rest in Power, Amy.
Amazing soul and jazz album. Her voice is beautiful.
What a voice and what a sound! A call back to Jazz lounge singers in the 30s and 40s. So soulful. I loved her documentary AMY. A talent gone far too soon, but a legacy amplified by an early demise. RIP.
Literally the best album so far
Original, beautiful voice. Loved it
This is awesome.
blew me away, did not expect that. i’m familiar with amy, but never got into her full albums, this was phenomenal.
ok LO AMÉ. fue como poner un tiny desk y eso es decir un montón para mi onda los tiny desk lo son todo para mi(?) 9 / 10 colta
So much Soul. Amy is so incredibly talented and this album hits in all the right places. Easy 5 stars
5 star
Very unique sound and voice, lots to pick up on upon repeat listens, classic album
Amy Winehouse was so talented. It was impressive that she could sound so much like singers such as Billie Holiday, but it doesn’t sound like it was a gimmick or an impersonation. Probably my favorite album to come up on here so far.
slay amy
Id listened before. Her voice was something special & it couldve been legendary
Quite fucking swanky in my opinion. Kind of a darker, after-hours Norah Jones. I enjoyed this, maybe even more than Back to Black
Very good
very cool
great album
lovely
A perfect Sunday morning album.
fav track: October song
This album is peak Amy for me. She has some fun with the inevitable Erykah Badu comparisons, but this is a bright new talent, rather than the significantly retro retooled Mark Ronson stuff. I can barely listen to Back to Black due to its ubiquity and idolatry but this? Forever.
Banger
Fantastic, she truly was
She's got such a great voice. Awesome album, lots of great songs!
An amazing voice and presence on the album. Each track is great.
GTFO. Absolute LEGEND of an artist, really just riffing from the depths of her soul, a little bit different every time. I love how jazzy and playful the tracks are, and I just freaking love her, OK?!
Listen, Fuck me pumps will forever ring out in my house. Big fan of Amy, and this is one of my favorites.
Turns out I love this
I love everything about her voice! Her music is timeless and cherished
Top, bom pra banho e p fuder
Good stuff from Amy - more laid-back than I expected but none the worse for it
Outstanding. No idea why I’ve never heard this before
i know every word, such a slay. fuck me pumps, double slay album art - deserved better, but good 7/10
Hey Amy!
Gotta love Amy
My girl
כמה רגש ויופי וסול מושלם ליום גשום
nice :3
Soothing modern jazz-soul. Its charm is how it's less polished. In paying homage to Frank and other legendary crooners, this album accomplishes to sound both modern and old. There are elements of R&B throughout the decades. What I do like are the more modern tracks that have the groove (like Mr Magic and Pumps) And "Teo Licks" is such a good interlude. What a Persona 5-adjacent track (3.5-4).
super, je l'ai pas fini mais il faut que je continue
I liked this quite a bit. Definitely will come back to this and her other album.
Good album, great artist
It is more of a collection of songs than a coherent album, but what is on here it’s pretty damn good. I get the hype and it is much more complete than her last album.
Dama var rå. Liker kanskje viben bedre enn låtene (om det gir mening), men denne kan jeg fort sette på på terrassen en varm julidag.
Loved it
A terrific album. Not as polished as Back to Black but a very worthwhile listen that established Winehouse as someone to watch.
day 5 — Frank — Amy Winehouse (2003) genre: neo soul runtime: 54 min rating: 3.5/5 fav track: know you now thoughts: maybe unpopular opinion cuz i see a lot of ppl dislike this album 😭 this is my favorite album of hers. the jazz influence is so strong and these songs are just great. i think for a debut album this is some of her best work
When to listen: cooking a steak with a glass of wine. Amy Winehouse is iconic and I love her deeply but this isn’t her best album, the songs feels a bit repetitive but it’s a repetition of something highly enjoyable.
This lives up to the hype. Definitely a vibe and easy to groove to.
She’s an icon for a reason - the sound on this album is entirely her’s and entirely something unheard at the time. Only Amy Winehouse could have made this music.
This is a good album. Especially for someone who was only 19 at the time. It's not Back To Black, that album is a masterpiece. But this is a super solid first record for sure. She had such a great voice, although I don't feel like she really showed it as much on this album. It's a little overproduced at times and some songs left me wishing for a little more of a raw and simple record. But even still, I really like this one and wouldn't hesitate to pick it up and play it now and again. 3.75/5.
4/5
So good
Whatever you think of her you cant deny she was super talented and a great jazz singer! A great debut 👏
Never heard this one but I liked it. She has a very good voice. What a talent she was
classic but not for me
What a voice. Not as musically exciting as Back to Black, but nothing wrong with this album.
British…? All of the songs are so sick.. my favorites are Intro/ Stronger Than Me You sent me Flying / Cherry Know You Now Fuck Me Pumps There is No Greater Love In My Bed Take The Box October Song Soo good 88/100
I recently watched the Amy documentary, and it really adds perspective as to all the shitty things about her life. She was a product of her environment which molded her views on relationships/life which influenced the themes in lots of her songs. Overall, not as much pull as Back to Black, but still a very good listen. Likes: Stronger Than Me; You Sent Me Flying; Fuck Me Pumps; I Heard Love Is Blind; No Greater Love; October Song
Very good throughout. Great voice.
I like this, though maybe not enough to listen to regularly. She's got a beautiful jazz vocal style.
A more consistent and, for me, enjoyable listen compared to the second album.
прям хороший альбом мне очень нравится тембр голоса певицы
It's not as dynamic as Back to Black but still excellent. RIP Amy.
Such a powerful album, and a debut one at that. Feels timeless and very cutting edge at the same time. I didn't pick up on the allusion to Sinatra until reading about the record, and now unfortunately can't unhear the resemblance — although I guess it makes me more sympathetic to his music.
I’ll be Frank with this one, it was decent. Know You Now.
Ok. I have multiple of these projects going. This is the second time this album has come up. The first time I gave it a 4. I mean the haters can hate, but Amy has a voice and an ability that are real. They get eclipsed by her life, by her persona, by the Amy Winehouse unavoidable in the tabloids. I wondered how I would feel now? This time I was so impressed by her humor. People focus so vehemently on her sexuality and her sex charged lyrics without considering that perhaps, just perhaps, she’s a bit… tongue in cheek. And that tongue is sticking straight out at… you. It’s not the sex, come on, that’s the intelligent woman’s act if she’s able to play it, it’s the drug use that really took her down. And that is no where truly apparent here. That starts to really get laid out later. This Amy is fresh and fun and beautiful. 4 Boolean: TRUE
fav songs: stronger than me fuck me pumps moody's mode for love jazzy, stylish, confident 70/100
I liked this.
amy winehouse is very good
it's jammin and it feels powerful
#408 / 1089 Heard before? ✅ Revisit? ✅ This one is from before she got fucked up, quite young as well I think. For some reason I don't remember these songs, I know I listened to it once or twice... since my ex-wife used to listen to her, it was probably spun in the car on CD. She has very distinct phrasing and mannerisms, which are sometimes a bit distracting, but for the most part I enjoy her sound. The music on this album is not totally my thing, the sounds of modern r'n'b are here and there, it's not as clearly soul or jazzy as her latter music. Her vocals do lift this one up a notch. vocals strong 5, music weak 4, so 4/5
Its about 5 songs too long. I added a star for A-tier vocals and style variety. But I liked it about 3 stars.
This was a fun surprise for me.
Yes, I very much enjoyed this. Doesn't quite reach the perfection of Back to Black for me. But this is a very enjoyable collection of songs. Crazy to think that she was 19 when she released this. She sounds so grown up and broken down.
Amy! Oh Amy! RIP You know, I loved her voice back in the day. And her attitude. Though I paid very little attention to her in the media. I find it interesting how much people go on about how f*ed up she was from jump and how she splashed that across her lyrics. How many male artists do that? And the thing is, I rated Marshall Mathers highly. So I am unafraid of a musician “getting real.” Mac Miller was pretty honest about what was going on with him, too. I’m just sorry Mac and Amy had to die. And honestly, I think those deaths were dances between an “adoring public” and an ultimately lonely soul. But anyway, all that aside, I think this is a remarkably good debut with pretty consistent sound and feeling. 4 Boolean: yes, always glad to hear Amy sing before I die
Musically, this is right at my street. However, I'm docking a point for being Amy Winehouse. In my opinion definitely not a worthy member of the 27 Club.
Great album! If you’re going to introduce someone to Amy Winehouse, this is the album to me. Back to Black is fine and the singles are killer on that album. But this to me feels more genuine with her vocals and artistry.
surprisingly soulful
jazzy pop, kinda whiney (?) Vocals
Hafði ekki hugmynd um að þessi plata væri til. Hún er skemmtileg, þótt mér finnist productionin vera full mikið síð trip-hop á köflum. Tæpur fjarki.
One of those guilty pleasure records of mine. It feels smoky without trying to be I guess vintage?? One minute she’s throwing out sarcastic one-liners, the next she lands a lyric so honest it almost feels accidental lol. 4/5
4.5 I love amy winehouse
a good listen. very unique voice. nice blend of jazz, r&b, crooner stuff.
I honestly liked this one a decent amount. I’ll have to go back to it to see if I really give it a 4 or if it’s more of a 3, but her vocals and lyrics were fun. I’m leaning more towards 3.5 because, even though I’m tired, the only songs I can distinctly remember is the one about her boyfriend being gay and Amy Amy Amy
It was so interesting to hear Amy so young and a little more in the commercial side of things than the jazz side we all know and love. Obviously, some very controversial lyrics, but overall, I'm moving and grooving.
This was a great one, sounds like a scrappy kid doing r&b/jazz and it comes off very genuine.
Great showcase of her awesome voice. Would definitely go back to this
God, it's a tragedy that Amy is no longer with us recording amazing albums. Just a tier below Back to Black, this is a great record. Fuck Me Pumps is a banger.
I'm with this album. It's got some range and she has a great voice.
Quelle voix puté, pas mon style de musique mais très très très gros classique, j'ai cependant trouvé ça un peu long par instant
Rarely listen to jazz music, but this one slaps, super non-skippable jazz album I've ever listened. Felt so sleepy because of the melodies and the instruments of each tracks. Thank you Amy for giving me an hour of jazz music experience, may your soul always rest in peace.
This is my first time listening to this album start-to-finish, though I do recognize a few of these tracks by title. This is pretty darn good. I'll add this to my list of albums to listen to again.
fusion jazz ,R&B. soul y hasta beats the hip hop todo junto a una de las mejores voces que nos ha dado el reino unido este siglo es un gran album debut mas allá del mito que se a convertido Amy
This was so different from what I'd been expecting, in a really good way.
3.5
Lovely
What an amazing talent. Burn bright, burn out. Great album
Frank is just raw in a really natural way. The vocals are insane Amy Winehouse doesn’t even sound like she’s trying, she just is that good. I really like how minimal some of the instrumentation is, it leaves space for everything to breathe and makes it feel more intimate. The mix of R&B, soul, jazz, and even some reggae touches gives it a unique vibe, but it never feels forced. Emotionally it’s kind of all over the place sarcastic, vulnerable, confident, a little messy but that’s what makes it feel real.
Me gustó mucho.
Some great songs on here but it’s just the warmup for when she really got into her stride with the great Back to Black album.
Немножко предвзят по отношению к ней, поэтому оценку завышу. К концу несколько замыливается ухо от однообразного и размеренного звучания. Реальная оценка наверное ~3,7.
Great voice/talent. Gone too soon!
Okay so Amy is obviously a genius and her song will ALWAYS be good.
A very strong debut album and a nice listen. Already off the bat there's strong lyricism, fluid production, and a pleasing mix of sounds. Not really any huge hits compared to her later work but is still fine on its own.
She sounds much more raw in this one, much more unpolished than her big record. I think this is not nearly on the level of Back to Black and is much more bloated, but still some amazing songs, and you can hear her amazing voice on here too. Songwriting is a lot less sharp, and all, but still a low 4.
I'm just a sucker for this kind of neo-soul, neo-jazz revival, top-tier production too. Frank isn't the masterpiece that is Back to Black, but it's still a stellar debut. Her voice was something else, and she was also a really strong lyricist. Even when her songs paint her as a little selfish and mean-spirited (she was only 20, to be fair), they're really vivid and she had a unique way with words.
All of the boys and all of the girls are waiting to if you seek Amy💅
A well documented debut album and a much more expansive and less commercial affair which, with hindsight, was probably where Amy should have stayed for a while longer before hit producers came calling. It still sold a million and got an Ivor Novello award. One can still hear elements of the sound that became so big 3 years later, with ska mixing with the jazz and retro grooves. Clearly it was made for the CD market and one senses that Island records were not chasing a single - and musically there better for it.
I really enjoyed this album - the storytelling and songwriting is at such a high level, especially considering she was 19 at the time of release. Great production too.
For some reason I expected this to compare poorly with ‘Back to Black’, but I was actually very pleasantly surprised. This is a great jazz-influenced pop/soul album, with lots of stylistic variety which helps keep things interesting. It is a bit too long; after the excellent jazz standard covers around the halfway mark the quality takes a bit of a dip, but it’s still easily good enough for a very strong 4 stars. Some of the lyrics are… dated, but overall the songwriting, performances and production are all excellent. Incredible that she wasn’t yet 20 when this was recorded.
Favourite Songs: Stronger Than Me In My Bed October Song
Probably my favourite album of hers for it's grittiness and melody. She was one hell of an artist and I miss her.
Chulisimo⭐️
What a voice
Great listen on a Sunday morning
RIP so talented
It's not as well developed and rounded as Back to Black, but it's still a good record. The genesis of her style is present and accounted for, even if it's not fully formed yet. A worthwhile listen and an important part of her sad story.
Such a unique voice, sounded great.
Easy to listen to. Pretty chill. Amy had a fantastic voice. Not my general style of music to listen to, but it's pretty solid. "In My Bed" is a high point.
Not really my style of music but i was really impressed. Her voice is exceptional, the production is great and big beat, the songs are simple and somehow innocent. It's like an album long love poem to that famous boyfriend. Shame about the future tragedy...
Fascinating and frustrating in equal measure. Having been there at the time, the difference between the raw honesty of her lyrics and the bubblegum pop of everyone else is astounding, and there are a good few moments of "Wow, did she really just say that?". In particular, In My Bed is a brilliant song that I keep coming back to, and I love the jazzy vibe much more than Ronson's production on Back to Black. That said, there are a good few moments that put me off. I get it, i'm a man, it's not written for me - but the 'are you gay?' response to a man not being dominant, or the whole bitchy vibe of Fuck Me Pumps just left me feeling a mean girls vibe. Amy was a tragic, talented figure - but I can't help feel she was also kind of unpleasant? So much of this is just bitching at other people...and then you hear a beautiful, cute piece like Cherry, and it all makes sense again. Deserves a 4, even though it's very much not for me.
Another great discovery for me. I love her voice and all the influences in her songs
8/10
Is it weird that I preferred this to Amy's second album? Her voice has far more range here, and the musical ideas go to far more interesting places for me. It might not be as cohesive as the album that would launch her into super stardom, but it's more exciting to listen to.
I've never heard this album before, and I feel like I've missed out as it was pretty good. I'm a big fan of Salaam Remi from the early 90's, he kicked out some banging tracks and remixes e.g. Patra, Da Bush Babees, Shabba, House of Pain. In fact, "Pull Up To The Bumper" is one of the best summer tracks I've ever heard. Her vocals can be a bit 'whiny' at times, but the overall package is very good.
Amy’s voice is absolutely dreamy on this album, made even more impressive by it being her debut album at just 19. There is so much maturity in the song-writing & performance, made even more prominent when you hear some of the lyrics coming from a teenager. I definitely do prefer Back To Black as a standout album - I feel that this one has some moments that didn’t land quite as well, and it’s a touch too long & drawn-out for my liking - but overall it’s a really good listen.
Que buen álbum, que voz, que mujer
we are so UP these past two days. that one classic joke about white women doing r&b. but subverted. cause. it's amy fucking winehouse (jack harlow genuinely kys). i Was gonna say the lyrics are toxic as hell but remembered the influence is Right there. 4.2-4.4.
Klassieker, top album
good
I liked it! Fuck Me Pumps and October Song were keepers.
smooth grooves, would listen again
the short, tumultuous career of Amy Winehouse, one of the most significant artists the UK has produced in the pop field this century, began in a place that was inspired mainly by vintage jazz, soul and R&B. the follow-up, Back to Black, was steeped in the polished musical traditions of the Brill Building era, but Frank is much looser, a bit more casual and way lighter on the lyrical front. Winehouse's wit as a singer and lyricist, even at the age of (holy shit) 20, was evident right from the jump; her deep, genuine retro influences set her far apart from other pop stars, both at the time and ever since. most of the album's songs were produced by Salaam Remi, and they feature a 21st-century blend of electronic/digital production techniques from hip hop alongside a bevy of live instrumentation. the US edition of Frank, which I'm basing this review on, runs well over 50 minutes and encompasses a pretty huge range of material; Back to Black would prove to be much more streamlined (and probably more successful overall as far as the music itself); regardless, most of the musical diversions on Frank are well worth the listen, perhaps several. although Winehouse is legendary for her confessional, honest and frank (get it?) lyricism on her own songs (which I'll dissect more whenever I get to her other album), my favorite songs here are the covers, particularly that stunning interpretation of Eddie Jefferson's gorgeous tune "Moody's Mood for Love" right in the middle. strong 7/10.
Beautiful voice 3.7
Fun and jazzy, not too poppy, solid album.
solid
Never gonna complain about a Amy Winehouse album. This album is nowhere near as good as Back To Black but her voice is still amazing. The songs just aren't that catchy but still it's enjoyable.
Wenn es Album scho nach mim pape benannt isch, de vorname vode Sängerin nachere guete fründin und de nachname nach lecker wii und deephouse, chans nur guet usecho. Scho e krassi Stimm die frou. vier bernadettes für das Album
Fantastic album, especially for a debut. Nothing not to like.
Coolt!
larga vida a Amy winehouse
This project has given me a chance to walk with the wild, original and mentally ill Amy. This is her debut, I think--and it's got lots of promise. She needed a lifetime with her art. I needed a lifetime of her work.
Great voice. Production not as good as later tunes
What a voice. What a talent. What a shame.
Fue bueno escuchar jazz
Honey, yes. 4/5
++: You Sent Me Flying/Cherry, Know You Now, Fuck Me Pumps, Moody's Mood for Love/Leo Ticks, (There Is) No Greater Love, In My Bed, Help Yourself, Amy Amy Amy, Mr Magic (Through the Smoke) +: I Heard Love Is Blind, Take the Box, October Song, Brother +-: Intro/Stronger Than Me, What Is It About Men, Outro 7,9/10
Great singer. This is her finding her way a bit, but the songs remain strong. In some ways this album stands up better than Back to Black as the production is more understated and you can focus on her singing more. Solid 3.5
Strong debut from AW who has a fabulous contralto vocal and a touch of the Billie Holidays. Some jazz influences gives this album a smokey night club feel at times. Well worth a listen.
The lady could sing! The lyrics are engaging and complex too. I wish there was more musical/instrumental complexity.
I'm quite familiar with Back in Black, but not with Frank, Amy Winehouse's debut. This is a fun, easy listen with some great tracks.
Good album, no major notes didnt get to listen deeply
Wow really good album, I hadn’t heard most of her early work
I think I liked this slightly more than back to black but nothing jaw dropping. High 3/low 4
Vibey. Icon. Makes me slowly move in a weird way. Overall great stuff, not my everyday type of stuff, but definitely will be coming back to this on evening walks or putting it in background of lowly lit cooking with someone.
Really nice album. I liked the blend of soul, jazz and pop with some clever lyrics. No real standout tracks but an enjoyable listen. Amy's voice is as smooth as silk, and the album sounds like someone a lot more experienced than a 19 year old. A pretty great debut album. 3.5/5.
Amazing british RnB Jazz from talented Amy
Definitely a must listen, for her song writing alone. I always remember this album fondly and know that i love ‘fuck me pumps’ but there are so many other bangers on this album, it’s really pretty wonderful.
still (fuck me) pumps
I really liked it. Probably would have never listened to it on my own. Obviously she's a phenomenal singer and I liked the jazzy vibe
pretty good vibes overall, who am i to rate queen amy winehouse in any way tbh
An incredible voice. She does come close to over singing at times. But overall she nailed it
Nice vocals ig
Man… Amy Winehouse had such a great voice and this album captures it best, with all the highs and lows. 4.2/5.0
I get why people like her
I enjoyed it way more than Back to Black. It was chill and unpretentious. This is definitely something I'm going to revisit during those beautiful summer evenings, just soaking it up together with the last rays of the Sun for the day.
I wish we got to hear a full career’s worth of music. So talented and gone way too soon. 🕊️
She's got a ridiculously great voice, and there's a nice range of different musical styles on this record.
some nice r&b. loved her voice
I’ve heard plenty of radio play over the years, but this is my first listen through of an Amy Winehouse record. Without being able to describe how or why I can definitely agree that she has an it factor. Maybe it’s the voice. Maybe it’s the arrangements. Whatever it is, it works.
You can't deny the voice. The emotional connection and social commentary is there but just not honed to 'Back to Black' levels. I love the soulful and hip hop laden beats and backdrops, it's rich.
4⭐️/5 [03.09.2026] 03.11.2026
An impressive debut album from a generational talent, even if some of the lyrics didn’t age well (but also it was 2003). She was tortured, and her lyrics on this album reflect her inner turmoil and emotional pain, but also her humor and intelligence. She was 19 when she wrote this album, and the talent is overwhelming. I love the jazz and soul influences, and her voice is astounding and deeply emotive. It almost feels haunting to listen to her now. She left us way to soon.
Incredible voice and I love the more original sounding songs. Not as much when it leans a little to heavily into the retro vibe but still good
Amy has great vocals, and 'Back to Black' got five stars from me. However, this album is just a bit too all over the place. It's also rather long, and it feels like a few of the songs were just added as filler. Still a good album though.
What a voice! I'm more familiar with her other album, "Back to Black" but still enjoyed seeing this one pop up on the list for today. Listening to Amy Winehouse is like hearing a shaman access the spirit world, she communes with good spirits and evil spirits where none of them act predictably. She displays such an array of emotions you feel them reflected back at you. Late night hope, future regret, snide cattiness, frustration, complaint, playfulness, desire, or musing. A voice brimming with charisma and songs written with deep character. I just wanted to press play and let this album burn all the way down like a cigarette left in the ashtray.
i like the inspiration it takes
Feel good vibes Songs sound similar to one another Fav : mr magic
Jeg har lyttet så meget til det her især som yngre, og jeg synes det er så fantastisk uperfekt og råt og ærligt. <333
Adorable, we love Amy!
Incredible album from start to finish. 4.5/5
Wow. 4.5 a la primera escucha
I love her and her voice and lyrics so much. RIP legend.
I rather enjoyed that. On my first listen when this came up on the list I was lukewarm. Today it feels more complete.
A pretty good debut. The songwriting is gritty and honest which is refreshing for a pop artist, and her voice is smoky and spectacular. This album essentially reads as a darker version of what an Adele record sounds like. Same kind of soulful R&B that takes a lot of inspiration from the olden days of Jazz Vocalists (she even references Sarah Vaughan in a song), just with a barer and gruffer aura to it. The songs on this record aren't as sticky and immediate as on Back to Black but her talent is definitely present, and this isn't a bad record to have on.
