TL;DR: Irritating musical wallpaper that outstays its welcome. BEFORE: I mostly associate these guys with chillout tents and overpriced coffee shops in the early 2000s. Not sure I'm up for a full hour of this but I suppose that's what I signed up for. AFTER: I will just say that the negative views are much more fun to write. Every cloud etc. Mediocre tango set to mediocre trip hop with a few dubby elements thrown in for good measure. It's fine as background music for buying chinos but also utterly forgettable and every track is twice as long as it needs to be. The soundtrack to an unattractive couple who are really into Ceroc dancing trying to pick up a third at a wine bar. Apparently one of these tracks is a Frank Zappa cover. HIGHLIGHTS: Tríptico has its moments. LOWLIGHTS: There is no real tension and release here and the persistent accordion / bandoneon and violin is grating. Also, what kind of fuckwit puts dogs barking in the background of a song. Last Tango In Paris doesn't work at all. La Del Ruso is awful - it sounds like two songs playing at the same time. The rest of it is just kind of there. VERDICT: Temu Thievery Corporation. Even their name is unimaginative. 1 star. I had it at a 2 about halfway through but it ground me down to 1. A bewildering inclusion on this list. Even if you want to represent the vaguely world music-y downbeat electronica that was popular in the late 90s and early 00s, there are so many better examples. Completely inessential.
It was nice background music. Not a lot of difference track to track. About half way through this got very annoying. There were certain parts of songs I enjoyed, but having to listen to the whole thing through is tough. 1.5/5
Interesting trip-hop curiosity. Nothing crazy here but definitely thought this was enjoyable if a little same-y after forty minutes. But this is all supposed to hang together like a dj set and it does that well enough.
It's.... fine? This gets recommended to me a bunch so I've listened to a few of their albums. Each time I walk away with "that wasn't bad, but I think I'm all set on them for now.
I enjoyed this a lot. Well done.
This one blew my mind a bit because I recognized one song, La del Russo, as the theme music for the awesome French podcast Le Goût de M, and anything that makes me feel cultured and smart immediately earns a million points in my book. That’s what is the most satisfying about doing this 1001 journey—seeing the connections between albums, whether it’s samples or just influences, and knowing more about the musical context of modern pop culture. Again, anything in my life that gives me the impression of being knowledgeable is worth its weight in gold. I also just plainly dug this album in general. Excellent vibes all around. So 4.5 rounded down.
If you'd told me a day earlier that I was going to listen to an electro-tango album and I would LIKE IT, I'd have said you lost your mind. But here we are...
So apparently this is what’s called electro-tango. It blends traditional tango elements with electronic production, hip hop influenced beats, and ambient textures. This album is very much a product of its time, having been released in the early 2000s, when there was a strong trend of downtempo producers mixing electronic music with jazz or traditional styles from different cultures around the world.
Okay little record.
The songs bleed together in a way that makes it hard to pick any single song out, but that's not necessarily a complaint. It's totally unintrusive soft electronica/rock from start to finish, highlighted by a use of instruments that feels (almost) stereotypically French.
Good background music
5, beautiful album
really nice mix of different instruments
Sounds like that AI-generated lo-fi hip-hop channel on YouTube, but with accordions and a vague Argentinian vibe. But they were doing this in 2001, so I guess that is something. World music for people who aren't quite ready for the world. Got old fast.
Wan Euro hotel music. A few promising grooves, but not nearly enough to overcome the mediocrity.
It drew me in quickly, but I got a little burnt out by the end.
1088 - "Here's your juice box and orange slice. Thanks for coming."
I love France and pretty much everything French, but this seemed like an AI attempt to emulate a French-themed album. This falls into the category of movie soundtrack music for a movie I would likely hate.
Dishwasher advert followed by the Come Dine With Me theme tune for about 50 minutes. Not bad.
It was ok like pleasant to listen to but nothing really special
I thought that this was going to be more classic and historic Tango music. I might have liked that better. But I can appreciate the musicianship in this album.
I felt myself bopping along and just digging the beat layered with some French tango. I’m in! 3.5
Tango music! Wish it had been a little shorter. While it’s not something I’ll probably ever listen to again, it was enjoyable enough. 6/10 Pretty Good
#271/1001 🇫🇷🇨🇭🇦🇷 I would never have heard of this act before if not for getting an Astor Piazollo album on here a few weeks ago, then delving deeper into the Spotify algorithms. The Revenge of Tango doesn't thrill me exactly. I fuses traditional instruments with trip hop beats and samples but never really hits the heights that i would hope for. Best Tracks: Triptico, Epoca, Vuelvo Al Sur.
no hablo mexican
fun! gets a little bit elevatory at times but i didn't mind it
Some nice, chill electronica. I loved the infusion of the accordion throughout the album, it sounded great. Favorite Track: Triptico
I feel like it was close to being good, but slips on a banana peel along the way.
Pretty dang boring
Tango’s revenge turns out to be against the tango itself. Started with a seductive little dance; ended with the bandoneon filing a missing-person report.
This is great. It was my soundtrack to doing some cleaning and sorting, and it was perfect. Im voting this solely on feels. Really enjoyed it.
Total snoozefest.
This was pretty good.
Really fun to listen to, but doesn't reach repeat level
Perfect background music for criminals. Unfortunately, as an album, it is uneventful.
A little goes a long way here.
Boring.
I am totally here for electro tango. The fact that this album is rated so low on some sites makes me think there are better similar projects out there, but since this is what came across by desk today, it gets a 5
I might have expected a bit more from this thing, which is casting a bit of a negative light on my initial review of the album. But at the end of the day, it was fun and I would 100% listen to this again. 4.5 stars, rounding up.
Fairly bland background music
Yeah I really don’t know what to think of this one There’s some nice sounds in here and some very unique instruments. Vocals are nice (even if it’s something where I don’t really understand the lyrics). I really don’t have many impressions from this one; I thought it was a bit too long but I’m just kinda racking my brain for anything other than that in terms of lasting impressions I’ll probably give this one another listen, absolutely don’t see what’s super special about this but it’s listenable for sure
Man it's tough because on one hand the fusion of traditional tango with electronica is something i've never heard before. the first couple of tracks were interesting, but unfortunately it blends together. it was practically impossible to distinguish one track from another. I enjoyed it for its unique sound, but as an entire album its lacking.
Ich mag Jazz und ich mag Electrojazz. Leider lässt sich das nicht auf den Tango übertragen. Das Album finde ich sehr langweilig.
Angenehm, aber verlässt mich irgendwann.
I can't really get on with this background music stuff, it's not for me
Pretty sure I heard this in a tapas bar in Barcelona, the one across from the opera where a guy in a tux spilled Rioja over himself. Thanks for bringing back the memory I guess 3/5
Weird, but kinda enjoyed
Everything is titled in Spanish but I can still feel the French in my bones in the most sickening way.
Every time I think I get or like trip hop, something stupid happens that makes me want to die. This happened like every 40 seconds. I could edit this down to a truly bitchin 40-45 min video game soundtrack…but it was 1hr 1/2. That’s crazy.
Background music at a bank
La Revancha Del Tango I got this a bit mixed up with Wamdue Project, I was expecting King of My Castle but got Franco-Swiss-Argentine electro-jazz-tango instead. They are obviously capable and highly esteemed musicians in their fields, so to say it is a curio is a bit of a disservice, but I think in the end I certainly appreciated and for the most part enjoyed it, or at least found it an untaxing listen. It is at the very least a change from much of the list, and although this sort of thing can easily be very cheesy, and it does definitely flirt with it, especially the vocals on Chunga’s Revenge, it has a definite solemnity to the way it treats Tango. And on the percussion side it often does nail the early 2000s hip hop sound, the bass and drums on Queremos paz, Epoca and, again, on Chunga’s Revenge, do feel like something Cut Chemist might come up with for Jurassic 5. However it is also long at an hour, Santa Maria, Una Musica Brutal, El Capitalismo Foraneo and La del Ruso kind of fusing into one, the last few tracks kind of merging into one, although I did like Last Tango in Paris and enjoyed the final track a lot, particularly the vocal. I’m genuinely not quite sure what to make of it, is it coffee shop music or is it a nice niche project that fuses tango with beats and samples? Accordions and Tango aren’t necessarily my favourite musical styles and production wise it sounds very much of the early 2000s, which is not really helping me get to grips with it either. Ratings-wise it really comes down to how often I think I will come back to it. It’s intriguing and easy enough listen, particularly while working, so I think it just, just edges to a 3. 💃💃💃 Playlist submission: Vuelvo as Sur
I can see why people were calling this elevator music, but at the same time, it feels so much more interesting than that.
Advert music
Aggressively French
I listened to this on a flight and it still made me feel like the coolest girl smoking a cigarette in a Paris cafe
Banger after banger
Interesting concept to mix tango and electronic music. It mostly faded to the background but maybe that’s the intent? Would listen again
An interesting album. A little portishead vibe but with a tango twist.
Okay
Spansk, men relativt grove rytmer til tider. Likte det uvanlig godt, men var i Spania ved lytting
Really sexy and cool project. Wasn’t familiar with this before today. I love the flows and rhythms that it presents. Very soulful, beautifully arranged and engaging. Big dig on this.
What's this bullshit? We're even getting covers of Zappa now.
Surprisingly not bad. Great tempo and arrangement for an instrumental piece, which normally I find a little meh. Great background music for working.
I'm kind of whatever with this album. I've never been big on tango. This style of tango is more modern and had some interesting sounds, but I still wasn't much of a fan to what I heard.
Save for Portishead, I don't think there's a single trip-hop album that needs to be heard before someone dies. That said, this one is pleasant enough and spends a decent amount of time drawing from the south american musical well to keep it from getting too samey (and they're not afraid to mash on that piano). Anyway, seems like Gotan Project walked so Vika Jigulina could run.
When listening to this album you can feel the Argentinian and French blood enter your system with just how unapologetically it shows off their respective country's flair in the music here. If you can get down with some very European instrumentals I think Gotan Project's La Revancha Del Tango (The Tango Revenge) can be one of the more unique and interesting Downtempo/Trip Hop releases you may ever hear. As with a lot of Trip Hop/Downtempo projects, the procession section of this project is mesmerizing and never once feels traditional in any sense. Whether it is very odd tones or added instruments that help each song feel equally as refreshing as the last, everyone here in Gotan Project really tries their best to make this album pop in a lot of subtle ways. I can totally get why some American listeners may be turned off by how unapologetically European this is, but I adored it and felt very enthralled into the very poignant sounds of each respective country. Not bad for a 2000s and non-UK Trip Hop release!
Felt like I had heard Mr Scruff do this 30 years ago…. Nice enough but not outstanding
That felt very long and rather repetitive. Never hooked me
Interesting and different from most of the recent albums.
s'arright, this house sound.
One decent track.
This sounded French musically but I think the lyrics were a lot of Spanish, or maybe Italian. Anyway this was fine but I’m not sure why I must listen before dying.
Ehh?
Favorite Song: La del ruso Least Favorite: Santa Maria (del Buen Ayre)
I haven’t heard this before. This is, in theory, something I should be into, but it comes out all wrong. It starts of on a bad foot with something that makes me feel like I’m watching the local forecast on the weather channel then improves for the second song, and the rest of the album alternates between some electro-jazz with with some swirling effects and echo reminiscent of dub and what could beat best be described as hold music on a customer service complaint line. The jazz with echoplex and hip hop beats should be right up my alley but the instrumentation is going for a chill mood that ends up sounding lazy and weak, and the drums are tinny and small with no low end so they come out sounding weak as well. Also something about the rhythm to everything gives me the feeling the musicians are trying as hard as they can to not count on the ones and threes. With all this as the background, all the cool psychedelic effects make this sound like what an elderly lutheran sunday school teacher would listen to while smoking weed in the bubble bath. To end the album it goes back to the weather channel music. There are two decent songs on here where they forgo the jazz and hip hop beats and go into a kind of tango style. Everything else is just weak and sad.
it's like if elevator music was good
Just not for me
If you hear this music in a public place, just know that you are about to pay more for a haircut than you ever dreamed was possible. If I have learned anything from this, it is probably that Chunga is a vengeful son of a bitch, and will leave scars deeper than you anticipate. Boredom doesn't begin to describe the feelings imbued in me during the glacial trudge through mediocre background music that is "La Revancha Del Tango." This might have taken effort to cobble together, but I am so tried of electronic, producer based "music." Just give me my haircut already. I am ready to step into a new world. 1 HIGHLIGHTS: Esta muy shitty
It was a fun romp, but probably wouldn’t come back to again
6/10 will probablly rank higher if i would like this genre
It's good background music but idk, not special or anything
Wow something original and different is such a massive improvement from the U2 album (Joshua tree) I just had to suffer through yesterday. To be fair, the sounds of screaming chimpanzees would be an improvement over that. But seriously this album was really interesting. If I had to summarize it I’d say it’s like a French hip hop album. But that’s not fully doing it justice. It’s kinda silly and fun despite being French. It’s got great atmosphere and it feels like it’s just begging to be used in an action movie that has a suspenseful scene taking place during a French bank robbery. That’s like the exact vibe and feel of the album, French bank heist. I was so convinced I had heard this music before in an action movie I googled it and I realized I HAD heard it before in an action movie. Well it wasn’t actually a movie, it was this action spy comedy tv show that I adored as a young man called “Chuck” (great show but don’t dive too deep into the cast, the lead actor is a massive loser and moron unfortunately). I really enjoyed this album despite not having a bunch of saved songs, the only real critique I have for the album is it’s a lot of the same from start to finish. It just changes tempo and vibe but for the most part once you have heard two or three songs that’s all there is to hear. Still legitimately enjoyable and while I may not be searching for this album to add to my collection, I did add the songs “chunga’s revenge” and “Santa María”. So yah, the take away is if you are looking for a silly French themed hip hop album, this is your album.
Standouts Triptico
It's... almost... boring?
I don't really get why... Mash-ups seems very dated, don't they?
Really enjoyed this.
très ennuyeux
Het is allemaal een beetje same-y maar de combi van trip hop en tango is echt wel een cool idee. Ik kan me voorstellen dat een meer focused en gevarieerde versie van deze plaat een heel tof iets zou kunnen zijn.
I was excited to see Gotan Project on here. Not sure why they qualify for this list, but I've thought that about other groups as well.
Another dud from the dastardly French
I mostly enjoyed the drumming and the bass lines, the rest of it I could take or leave.
Really great album tbh. Loved the vibe as a whole and Epoca was such a throwback to the 2000s Finish advert haha
First Listen; 2.5; This gives off wine bar music vibes, but is a little too loud and forward, at least in parts, to be something that fades completely into the background. Thumping, simple, repeating bass lines, with reverb-heavy exotic sounding instruments over top. I almost wanted to give this 2, but by the end, I found myself enjoying it well enough, although nothing is really a standout either. Favorite Track: Triptico
This was an interesting listen. It works well as background music when you are doing something else. Not quite sure why it made it to this list. I was a little surprised to find that after listening to this album for 2 days I was only up to track 3, but there we are.
Never heard of this group before. Interesting music best in the background
Some nice french electronic music, this was quite good nice chilled beats and with some nice gear to listen to it , it's more complex than I thought I really liked this
Interesting and melodic. I'm glad I was introduced to this and I would listen again with pleasure. Glad to add something latin to my playlist beyond Buena Vista Social Club.
very pleasant
Nice album. Very chill. Will probably listen to it again. Nothing that really blew me away here.
