Reviews (page 3 of 8)
Pretty decent background music! Though I'm not the kinda guy to appreciate tango music, I did genuinely like this.
Spanish Tango electronica? Sign me up! I loved this. I preferred the more upbeat songs but I enjoyed everything.
Weirdly listenable
Tango (featuring accordion and violin) with some vocal tracks and some instrumental tracks, but with a trip-hop / electronica beat. Cool marriage of the genres. Época Chunga's Revenge Santa Maria (del Buen Ayre)
3-star sounds with +1 star for being something I’d never find on my own.
Smooth, easy listen while getting some work done. 4/5
Massively recognisable songs from an album and band I've never heard of
first listen this is really a cool blend of traditional and modern
I like the accordion in this album a lot. The album has a funky Latin vibe which is so good. Great underrated album on the list.
I enjoyed it. Something I usually wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to, but I definitely feel there is a time and a place where I will revisit this. El Capitalismo Foràneo is going onto several playlists in my regular rotation.
I have no idea why, but I really enjoyed this. I think it largely just being an instrumental album meant I could apply my own context.. which meant most of the time whilst I was listening, I was the protagonist in a quirky Parisian spy flick, street fighting with sharpened baguettes and dodging mini croissants some nasty moustachioed baddie was hurling at me like shurikens. This album is hands down the best example of alternative french jazz spy electronica I think I've ever listened to.. the only issue was the length of some of the music. Many of the songs didn't need to be 5/6 minutes plus.. without lyrical accompaniments they didn't develop enough to not feel a bit stale by the end, and it made the imaginary fight scenes in my head absolutely exhausting.
Opening track reminded me of Terry Gilliam's Twelve Monkeys theme. Would have preferred live drums rather than drum machine, which is something I thought throughout. Still sounded very full and atmospheric. I know Epoca from what I feel like is a thousand adverts. Listening in its entirety was truly magnificent. Frank Zappa covers…never thought I'd hear one on this list. Not bad either. Triptico is again familiar. Who knows why? Maybe it's from Parrappa The Rapper (it's not). Santa Maria was rousing, assertive, I learnt how to Tango during its nearly six minute soirée. Una Musica Brutal reminded me of the Mamushca from Addams Family, and also of Vic and Bob's remake of Randall and Hopkirk. That's not meant as a diss, top marks! El Capitalismo Foraneo had me thinking of Groove Armada and Morcheba and stuff in that vein. Last Tango In Paris was ok. I massaged some Herbal Essences into my scalp while this was playing, and then remembered I wasn't in the bath and/or shower. The next ones were fine. I'd ejaculated by this point so didn't make any more notes. By and large this album took me by surprise, from behind, and bought me flowers and a slap up dinner.
Tango. Mal was anderes.
Another cracking little album. I think it's been one of the more 'unique' albums on here. I've lost count of the number of albums in the more popular genres (rock, country, rap, soul, jazz etc), but this one comfortably sits alone as I don't think I've heard anything else like it yet and I'm just past 300 albums in.
Some recognisable songs and clear grounding of a modern take on Tango. Really enjoyed it actually, perfect music for the background to energise me while working so a bit more situational music but good nonetheless.
Very cool music, even though it falls more into the "ambient" category than perhaps I would like. Favorite track: "Tríptico"
Pretty good!
CD
i like it!!!!!!! reading about this album led me into a wikipedia rabbit hole about different rioplatense dialects and jargon which was fun too. LISTENING (to cool music) and LEARNING (about argentinian slang).
Very cool and slick. Added it to the list of albums to put on when I’m milling about my house like a sim (complimentary).
Interesting out of the gate. This one flirts a boundary of downtempo and (vaguely) trip-hop with a distinctly traditional European flair brought about by the accordion sound. Not hating this by any means, but I will be curious to see how they plan to keep things from going stale across 58 minutes. Epoca retains the classical lean as well with some string flourishes and sultry vocals. I knew Chunga's Revenge sounded familiar -- didn't expect to find a Zappa cover in here... Shit bangs though in its own right. Last Tango in Paris has a bell click that reminds me of elevator or hold music. Fine song otherwise, but I can't shake the connection. After a listen and a half, this stands in at a low-to-solid 4 for me. Basically this is electro-jazz that borders on cheesy, but ultimately makes for an enjoyable listen. The songs were varied and pulled in instrumental layers I wouldn't have expected (strings, accordion, etc.). End result is something that I feel like I could put on anytime for a decent time.
I expected this to be a rather homogenous dance album which would have been fine, but I was pleasantly surprised by the electronic twang that this album has. The variety was unexpected as well. Reminded me a lot of Gramatik; that coffee shop electronica.
Sounds like a melodica in Epoca and I'm here for it. This has some bomb ass trip-hopness to it I am grooooovin. Kinda gives me Thievery Corporation vibes. Could see this album being played in a hip restaurant or something. Easy listening and enjoyable. Low 4.
Ballroom electronica. Kinda fun.
Very different from most mainstream music at least in the US and UK. Intricate rhythm and creative melodies make this a great listen. The vocalist is exceptional even though I can’t understand the lyrics.
Another surprise: a jazzy album that I liked!
This has a great feel throughout and really easy to get lost in on headphones. Totally makes sense to be on the list and I'll revisit.
smooth, nice background music
When I saw this pop up, I really didn’t know what it was. I saw the Spanish name of the album, then the description said a French group, and I was like wait what!?! It turned out to be a pretty good and interesting album. It’s basically electronic latin jazz, and it works well. I found myself really getting into the album and enjoying the ways they incorporated the different styles together. The only issue is the album is almost 1 ½ hours long, so when I got to the remix tracks I decided that was enough and ended it there. Still a really cool album worth checking out
I've loved this album for a long time, it's just a little bit unique and a little bit special. Very chilled but quite upbeat.
I like tango; I like some electronica but a lot more selectively. This is a fairly well executed mashup. Is it worth a 4? I wasn't sure about that until I heard the train horn in El Capitalismo Foráneo. Train horns in electronica tango is innovative.
8.2
I was in with a lot of Modern Languages students in the early 2000s and I remember this album getting heavy airplay during parties etc. It was decent enough background music and as another reviewer has said, it's a bit like good hold music. A nice nostalgic listen, but not much more than that.
Cool European hotel lobby music
This had a really nice groove to it that was fun to work with having it on in the background.
Like yesterday's Primal Scream album, this was a great listen. The tango + electronica combination really works. I will definitely listen to this one again. 4 stars.
A very unique album
Ended up liking the whole thing more than I thought. Very easy to work to. Rating: 4.2
Really cool album... But the next one sounded exactly the same.
some of the songs ran a bit long for my liking but I really enjoy the sound.
It could almost come off as a bit too wilfully hip but it deftly skirts that. Genuinely engaging. Some dubby parallels with the likes of Sabres of Paradise. I think it feels authentically true to its cultural source material, while modernising that in a credible way. It's a nuanced and well executed production. Definitely not 'stick a house beat under some samples and collect the advertising money'. Still sounds fresh 23 years later.
A surprisingly fresh and dynamic entry point into tango music for the modern listener not familiar with the genre. I appreciate this group and this album for helping to broaden my musical tastes all those years back when it came out. 🌹🌹🌹🌹
obviously i have v little familiarity with any of the genres this is mashing up, but just on its own it strikes me as super cool...i think the secret weapon is the trip hop influence, which allows a great variety of subtle atmospheric touches that rly unify the smoky, sultry, nocturnal atmosphere on here. i cant say this authoritatively obviously, but this feels pretty forward thinking, as opposed to a bunch of pastiches. very funny inclusion: a cover of the title track from Chunga's Revenge of frank zappa's infamous flo and eddie era
Que copado! Que barbaro! Totally bueno onda! One is fully down with nuevo tango and 21st-century updates of a hugely underappreciated genre. Larga vida al tango! And gracias Gotan for helping to make it so.
I really love this tango inspired album, sometimes a bit more jazzy, sometimes almost trip-hop (think Portishead). Sensual cover too. One of those albums I can listen to, or have it as background. It never gets in the way but isn't dull at all either. I saw them live 20 years (?) ago and it was really good.
Good album to have playing in the background. Very chill
Nice!
Tango for the 21st century. Dig it.
Nice tango music.
Bit of a bop and a fun listen to
3.5☆/5 07.14.2024
Not bad. The music they play at World Market.
I feel like I've definitely heard of some of this before, on some kind of chill mix playlist. I love this kind of down-tempo vibe, and it's very much in my wheelhouse. In terms of the music and quality, it's consistent throughout, and I enjoyed all of it. In terms of where this sits for me in terms of music and albums in general though? I don't think I would ever specifically think of this band in particular, or remember them... I would save this and come to it occasionally when looking for a particular chill mood. And that's just fine!
Very well composed. There's not too much or too little of anything, there are some really cool solos, and the timing is spot on. Some of the music feels quite danceable for tango as well. I can't find any faults or something I'd change as such. However, it doesn't really leave any strong emotional impression, which I personally demand in a 5, so it'll be a 4.
4 - This was a nice, chill album. It changed up just enough that I didn't get bored of it. I do think the first half was stronger than the other half, but that's not to say it got bad or anything. Honestly, it might of just been me getting a little tired of the album, since it is about an hour long. It could be a more concise album, but as it is, I still like it.
French electronic artists celebrating Argentinian tango with a Frank Zappa cover mixed in. This is the kind of album that transports you to another place and time. It has a tendency to blend into the background which suits it very well for a trendy bar setting. But unless a lot of background music, it has an interesting style that you can drift in and out of. It's always nice to remember that Gotan Project exist.
Left-field pick that’s actually pretty damn good! Super groovy electronic beats that stand well on their own, whilst also being helped by well integrated tango elements. Greatly suprised by its quality
This could be playing in a restaurant or a dinner party….or just anywhere and it would be pleasant and enjoyable. There is nothing offensive about it and I would play it at my dinner party.
great
Really calm and pretty background music. Spanish lyrics set to French cafe music. It’s easy and inoffensive. Good for relaxing or studying.
This was a great listen. 4.5
Mint
Solid eclectic set of Latin rock and trip hop.
....
nice chill funky music 4/5 oh yeah the violin!!!
This is some really fun tango infused electronica. Really enjoying the vibe of this overall. This french/euro trip-hop stuff is great to just kind of chill out to or work, which is generally how I've been enjoying this project
A much needed reinvention of Tango in a fusion attempt to transmit its essence to new generations. Beautiful idea and better execution.
I didn’t think I recognised anything from today’s album at all glance, but I was wrong. I don’t know where, but I’ve definitely heard Época before and it’s a banger. Everything else on here is pretty in line with that too. There are minimal vocals, with the music saying everything it needs to with its melodies. This was a nice album today.
Right up one's alley, this is quite thoughtfully conceived and brilliantly executed. As heady and stylish as the Argentinian people themselves. Speaking as neither a tango purist nor expert (though one has been a practitioner more than once and remains an unabashed enthusiast), it can be said that this seems the right way to modernize / recontextualize / make hipper and more relatable a genre that is misperceived as being old-fashioned, besides being criminally underrated.
love this latino heat
Liked this a lot
Favorite track: Época
Refreshing mix of styles
I liked this better than I thought I would. It's very well engineered.
a pleasant change to the previous music, I spent the day listening to this album and some great related tango
Very interesting, deserves a second listen. Good use of string instruments throughout to give the tango feel and a strange mix between jazz and electronic. 3.5
pretty cool ambientish chill vibes. would've felt better with a ~30 minute runtime as opposed to nearly an hour though 4/5
4/5. Chill beats to study/focus to basically. I enjoy it but it definitely serves the purpose of background music. No doubt well made but not something I'm playing often unless I need to have chill good background music. Still overall a great track listing. There are also some more groovy active listening songs. Best songs: Triptico, Last Tango in Paris
Nice background music
pretty funky tunes
Erikoinen valinta. Chilliä instrumentaalista elektronista tangoa. Aika siistiä enkä oo tainnur koskaan tälläistä kuulla. Parhaat: Kaikki aika tasapainoisen hyviä
That was pretty good, although sometimes repetitive, but what do you expect from electronic music. The mix with the Hispanic instrumentation was phenomenal
Really enjoyed the first half of this album. The back half drops off, but was still okay.
Made me want to dance a little. Seems like very good tango music!
Rock solid dinner tónlist fyrir hipstera og töffara.
A really good album. Sexy, sultry, a beatiful melange of classic spanish arrangements and modern electronic dance rhythms and production. I really enjoyed this album which had me up and dancing on multiple occasions all the while looking the fool. A great discovery 4 stars
Pretty cool random album. Some good dj songs
Really calm and pretty background music. Spanish lyrics set to French cafe music. It’s easy and inoffensive. Good for relaxing or studying.
Great but didn’t move
High quality elevator music
good while working
Great work music! I don't think it had any vocals, more of a latin EDM style I would say.
Bin bitz zwüsched me 3 und me vieri aber i has etz nomol glost und es isch scho no cool, vor allem d drums drum 4i
Go-tan / tan-go Queremos paz hallou che guevara red (luca und mattia erinnerts eu a öppis? Arranca por la derecha…?) Okaaaaay wiiter electro-tango bi época. Gaht recht los. Ihm seit tango.
ok frenchie album schomol guet. tango + electro riese idee. erste song drums geil. handorgle sehr tasty.
Very impressed. Am going to revisit this.
Really liked this…would be nice if my Spanish was better and I could understand what they’re saying, but I still liked it a lot
Thrilling - I have a lot of time for this music, and I knew a couple already. Seen plenty an Argentine Tango on Strictly to some of these tunes. Gotan = Tango.
very smooth, very chic. the romantic strings and the passionate accordion hits compliment the beats greatly. greatly classy instrumental flips all throughout, mixing the beauty and grace of the spanish tango with uber-hip electronic sounds and drums makes for a nice album i'd say. certain tracks almost have a housey vibe to them.
an enjoyable listen, pulsating latin rhythms, mostly instrumentals. Maybe doesn't quite sustain interest over the entire album. Probably a 3.5 stars but am feeling generous
Tango with chill beats, relax or ignite the desire to dance tango
This was really good. I’m Not sure it’s a five. But I know I’ll listen again and it broadened my taste. Great mixture of flamenco w European styles.
Very fun, very dancy, very engaging and not something I would have sought out for myself. Will keep this album on deck!!
well that was fun
Great background music, had it on a loop for half the day. Will definitely listen to this again.
lovely. weird, but lovely
A good album, I like instrumental songs and and album of mostly instrumental songs was a nice change of pace. I enjoyed Santa Maria the most.
This was a fun surprise. Had no familiarity with it, but this was a cool blend of retro music with electronic beats.
groovy
4/5. I really liked the experimentation put within it aswell as the solos.
Probs 3.5 really
Very good sound. Quirky
This was a smooth, sophisticated background track for my workday. The music makes its presence known without being overly intrusive. Nice!
almost really good. just veers a bit too close to 'do you wanna buy a dog' territory.
One rainy dinner evening at a tropical resort, complete with a reddish-brown hue that hits well with light alcohol and a bunch of expensive dishes... oh, and that was the first time I have seen an arapaima gigas. That fish was crazy huge, slowly vibing in the pond next to that restaurant. That evening, I couldn't forget hearing something like this. Tropical, Latin, and quite catchy. It's as if the atmosphere was set by it. And that's what this album reminds me: the way Latin music's unique beats humanize electronica is exquisite.
It took me a minute to figure out what I was seeing on the album cover which is very fitting for this album's mood. One could argue La Revancha Del Tango is just detailed background music, but I think this has a lot of depth and is a throughly enjoyable listen blending a lot of different styles of music together which never feels boring or mundane. Maybe this is the type of Trip Hop I can get behind.
Sultry, groovy and broody.
Dope
Vibes
This was interesting! Tango meets trip-hop. Enjoyed it a lot
Quite nice actually ☺️
Sophisticated, smooth and chill French electronica with tango influences. This is a very good background music also because for almost the whole album it is instrumental. It's a bit long and feels repetitive here and there, but otherwise it's a great album.
Extremelly enjoyable.
Interesting and unique.
Some SOMA secret agent vibes. 3.7
Ovo bogme nije uopće loše ostarilo 😃
I loved it. Chilled out but still foot tapping rhythms. I can imagine myself dancing to it in the kitchen. I will be adding to my playlist
Damn good time, well instrumented, sequenced, and performed. The band sound concise and there is nothing to really fault here.
Such an interesting mix of different genres! Definitely going to return to this one.
Dug the jazziness
La Del Ruso is the track that made this album click for me. I was enjoying the album, but nothing about it was a specially compelling to me as more than background music until the last 2 tracks and they are cool enough to elevate this album. In general, this is a cool mix of electronica Latin/South American grooves.
Pretty cool and funky
I really enjoyed this album! The instrumentals were great.
Great background - and that’s in a positive way
Great album, nice blend of styles.
Played this a couple of times over the weekend and it was great background/dinner music.
Yes yes enjoyable contenital sounds underscored by groovy bass snd beats. This took background music to a new level. For this album i would glady break a lift to be stuck in.
I listened to this album a lot. It takes me back to a time when Giles Peterson rules the stereo system and WOMAD was always on the cards for summer.
Really awesome beats and sound.
I love experiencing other culture’s music for the first time. So cool!
Surprisingly good. This sounds like the kind of tracks I hear on Groove Salad on SomaFM.
Not my first choice, but still good. Trípitico is my favorite song overall.
I've never heard of the Gotan Project or any of the music on La Revancha Del Tango. I enjoyed the album because it was different that what I would normally listen to, but had ties to music that I'm interested in. I often enjoy listening to traditional music. I enjoyed the mix of traditional elements of latin musice with music that reminded me of late 90s alternative / electronica / indie-pop. I didn't pick out any true favorites from the album, but I could easily do a re-listen of the entire album.
Gotan Project traffics in something called Neotango (or "Mystic Tango," according to the book), and I was so sure I was going to hate this based on the name and description that I put off listening to it for a day. It actually (mostly) worked. The creativity and musicianship is incredibly impressive and I actually came away from it wanting more. A really intriguing surprise. Best track: Vuelvo Al Sur
nujabes' cool latino brother
Quality Latin chilled vibes. 👌
This list has a ton of gimmick 90s electronica albums fusing various genres, and today we have a tango-based one. But it's good. Trip hop usually is, and this also has many elements of house in it. It's ambient and low key with a high production value, usually justifying the extensive lengths of many tracks. Some pop hits but also some more interesting instrumentals. Doesn't fall into cliche tactics. I know it's cheating since it's an experimental take on the genre, but this is the first tango album to keep me engaged for so much of it. The main issue is that, although the electronic beats make it accessible to mainstream audiences, it restricts the fluidity of tango rhythm, and thus lacks the "passion" that makes tango stand out. Second side was weaker, and the total length was too long. Favorites: Queremos Paz, Epoca, Santa Maria, Last Tango in Paris
TANGO GO TANGO, TANGO GO
I really enjoyed it. It's probably a little bit too long. But it's very groovy
Primo lounge music! I'd make the absolute chook out of a dinner to this album. And I don't say that as a knock in the slightest! Enough layers that you can sink into it, but easy going enough that it could sit cooly underneath a night of cocktails. Maybe my first proper discovery of the project, will be coming back! Fave track: Chunga's Revenge
Very nice background music. Nice beats, catchy rhythms.
Genre: Electronica+Tango Review: Unlike anything I've ever heard before. Gets a bit repetitive later though. Definitely have to listen to it again to make a better judgment. Rating: 8/10
This album turns background music into an art of its own, pushing the envelope so to speak. Favourite track: Santa Maria, on account of it being featured in Chuck.
Elektronisk tango.
I would not have come across this one on my own. Different, enjoyable, worth another listen.
Put 'electronic','tango' and 'French' together and this is what you get. Quite enjoyable. Now pass the Gaulloise.
This was very nice indeed, chilled out beats, floating vocalists, just really nice! Will make its way into my collection I don’t doubt. Muchos enjoyment! It won’t be for everyone, but fans of the likes of Portishead and Goldfrapp will enjoy!
This album grooves so hard. Really sultry, will make you melt.
Interesting mixture
Fun and enjoyable album! It really brought the tango into the modern world.
Groovy. That accordion sounds stunning against the trip-hop beats. A genuinely surprising and unexpected melodic blend of instruments and genres.
This was really good. Something very different than what I would normally listen to and I enjoyed it!
Wild, enthralling, Mexican-influenced trip-hop/jazz.
Loved the vibe.
Enjoyed this a lot more than expected, very cool album with a sort of ambient electronic Latino vibe. Saved tracks: Queremos Paz, Triptico, Santa Maria (del Buen Ayre), El Capitalismo Foraneo
I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected, but wouldn't listen to this unless I was in a specific mood.
Very pleasant
Very solid
Music to relax in small cappuccino bar when the skies are grey and wind blows shades of rain trough the mai street. At times the violin is a screwdriver inside all that musical wellness.

Unexpectedly enjoyable. Got better as it went on.
Great album. Surprised to find it on this list, but I enjoyed it when it came out and I enjoyed it again now.
What can I say, I have a soft spot for 00s electronic chillout albums like this, especially for late-night work (it's that or "Gaucho")
Easy listening
Very enjoyable surprise. The pieces sounds simple and stripped down, though they have a very pronounced latin-flavor and layering, with a steady beat that drives them forward. Really enjoyed this offering.
Nice and chill, would play again
Very funky and cool album, I kept thinking it was hispanic, but a few tracks starting showing those French roots of the accordion that I picture with films like Ratatouille. Listened while I was on a walk which was nice too. Very enjoyable album.
Interesting instruments. Sounds middle eastern, jazzy and electronic at the same time. Has some Indian themes as well. Definitely worth another listen.
8/10. Was not expecting to like this since Wikipedia listed one of the genres as Electronica, but was pleasantly surprised. It is both pleasant to listen to, and interesting.
Easy listening, last few songs aren't great as a different style
Liked. Lot of familiar tracks, but I feel like I missed out on it at the time. Maybe heard on Giles Peterson. Will go back.
Never heard this, I think I love it a little?
It's an aight album, nothing special, has some good tunes. 4/5
This album was surprisingly fun to listen to, especially as background noise while I did work.
This music is more about taking your body on a journey than your mind. The beats make you shake your butt and the acoustic instruments keep your brain occupied just enough, allowing your butt to shake on it's own, without your dumb brain getting in the way. Literal dance music. But the kind for when you've had a glass or two of wine, rather than the kind for when you've had some pingers and you aint stopping.
Enjoyable listen. Great to have on in the background, but still interesting if you pay attention to it.
I haven't listened to the whole thing but it's a banger from what I heard so far tango was definitely resuscitated with this masterpiece vuelvo al sure, santa maria and una musical brutal
Very good chilled beats
Neo tango is interesting. Drums too much but sounds good at all
something completely different for me. it was interesting experience, last 2 songs - best.
Cool mix of electronic beats and jazz. Very much as mood piece where most of the songs sound the same, but it is a nice chill mix to have on! My favourite track is the first one, but perhaps because I have a hard time telling them apart? I do appreciate the sampled spoken Spanish (the sampled vocals sounds like it may be from a film or something with some effect on the vocal - reminds me of maybeshewill?). Very enjoyable!
Très bien
Really cool mix of tango and modern electronics. Very smooth and evocative. Love the kinda dark vibes in "Época" and the groovy beat in "Triptico".
Soooo good! I definitely recognized "Santa Maria" from when I was in an Electro Swing phase and listening to Pandora a lot at work. It's such a brilliant fusion of musical styles, both of which are known for their high energy and passion. It certainly set a nice mood while laying in the hammock on the balcony this afternoon.
þetta er good shit
Interesting stuff. Enjoyable listen. Nice background music. Could even fall asleep to it. That's not to say it's boring. Ambient at times. Often static. It's got some cool. I dig, man.
Mixing tango with electronic music is such a good idea, that Gotan Project's debut album still sounds fresh even to this day. The ominous feeling of the violin and the bandoneon, classic tango instruments, are put side to side with lounge beats, and the result is chilling, in a very good way. Santa María (del Buen Ayre)" and "Época" are staples to this very unique genre, and the fact that they've included a cover of Frank Zappa's "Chunga's Revenge" makes listening to this album a fantastic voyage through western music, from Argentina to the world.
A cool, chilled, great background album
I.... am stunned. This album blew me away! Didn't know this band. I also don't quite know how to describe them. Tango? Jazz? All I know is I love it.
This is the most different and the most beautiful album we've listened thus far. What a shame--it looks like this album didn't even make a blip in the US! The album was wonderful as a whole, and I really can't wait to listen again. It was great to work to!
Loved the lyrics in Spanish. Really like this kind of euro music
Jazzy trip-hop with a distinctly Parisian twist. Has not dated nearly as badly as other music of this era, moves along nicely, but it is too long.
the dylan album! it seems cool, i'll listen properly one day soon. maybe cool alongside juana molina
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Hanging tree,
Interesting genre
Yeah, OK. I can get down with this.
Mostly enjoyable. Seems like the one socialist rap song didn't fit the mood of the rest of the album. Very similar to Skeewiff
This was pretty good and enjoyable, if a bit repetitive. Really more of a 3.5. Will check some of this group's other works for sure.
Muuuuy bueno. Me encantó. Nunca había escuchado neotango y me fascinó.
Not at all what I expected. I liked the tango electrica. It was a great listen while getting some work done. Straight 4
I like it, will definitely go back to it
Genuinely banger orchestral tango whatever album with nice vocals. Memorable! Understated.
Smoooooooth. Lovely Latin vibes and very chilled.
Interesting stuff. I had no idea what this was going into it. Very nice vibes.
When I heard the first track I thought this album was on the list just as a nod to the whole Buddha Bar / St Germaine scene and associated compilations. When I recognized the second track, and the third, and on, I realized that this *was* that whole scene.
// Favs: Queremos Paz / Epoca / Santa Maria Score: Decent 4
Melodic Mexican calm motives.
Chill Euro bar vibe.Easy to listen to when working.
Tango electrónica resultona. Portishead latino.
It just kind of happened in my ears, and it happened well. I will listen to this again in the future when I'm looking to relax.
very cool
Usually don't get as hooked for what would be "background" music otherwise but this was really well done. There were enough subtle flourishes and nuance between songs to keep it interesting and even the long songs didn't seem as long. Blatantly French, but that added an element. Also invoked Gran Turismo soundtrack vibes.
Nice album, very good rhythms and beats!
Fantastic, groovy, a little clangy at times, reminds me of the "Frantic" soundtrack, a bit of north African trance with the tango.
Mood: both hip generic back drop music for a trendy restaurant and boppy, zone out and dance club hits. At risk of trying too hard this would be fun to throw on at a party to jam to.
Surprisingly good
Good study music
whoa, very good! tango meets breakbeat / electronic. 4.5/5
This is kind of a vibe
WOW so fun!
Very cool
Great album, cool vibes a lot good tracks perfect for restaurant background music.
Lepposaa menoa vaikkakin välillä biisit ylipitkiä.
Hotel music for people who don't like hotel music.
Épocs geht gut.
Was honestly going to give this a 2 because why did I have to listen to it before I die and why was it so long but I’m kinda in a good mood so I’ll throw it a 3
Eh? Didn't hate it
very cool snappy french sound. delightful at first because the other 1000 albums make it sound new, but by the end you've really had your fill. favorite song is Tríptico. solid 3
Unspectacular but fairly enjoyable as low-investment, easy to process background music while cleaning, working on a project or going for a walk. The latin influences work very well with the electronic beats, and while the songs are measured in their presentation there's still enough going on for to be stimulating. It's a pleasant all be it unremarkable experience. Fine. 3/5
Not bad but nothing remarkable
I kinda liked it, but not sure I would listen again.
Good for what it is.
I can dig this in the right setting. Tango mixed with beats n loops. Sure. Why not. Definitely made my evening walk a lot more interesting.
I’m cool with the tango. This is good but didn’t blow me away. 3.25
Better. Than Coldplay
A very different and well produced album compared what has been on this list so far.
Something completely new to me. The music is good, though I wouldn't listen to it on my own volition. Also, the second song sounds like the Goosebumps theme tune,
Interesting album and could be fun at times, but in general its more suited as background music than an album.
The band name is vaguely familiar but I've never listened tot hem to the best of my knowledge. I'm also not a fan of music in other languages, I know, I know, but I like understanding the words~! It's got a cool electronica vibe, and it fits in with 2001, but the songs go on too long without any significant changes, meaning they get boring. Nothing ground breaking, no hits, but an impressive listener count on tracks like "Epoca" & "Santa Maria" which are both over 40M, not sure exactly why but kudos. Highlight for me was "Last Tango In Paris". It's background music, nothing more. I can see it being used in a movie. I can see no reason why this is a must-hear Top 1001 album in any way, shape or form. 3 stars, entertaining but not mesmerizing.
Who doesn’t love a bit of Latin?
I really enjoyed this!
Elevator muzak lowkey chill
Totally fine. Good dishwasher detergent and music.
Really enjoyed this album. The grooves, the accordion and the flamenco. The first track was my favorite.
This sounds like the mp3 that would have come with my sound card in 1999
Oh look, an obscure European electronic album. You know what that means? I'm not huge on this. This is La Revancha del Tango, a 2001 electrotango album from the French music group Gotan Project. As the phrase "electrotango" suggests, the music of this album is a blend between electronic music and tango. That... is certainly an interesting concept. Is the music itself interesting? Umm... it is for a little bit, but the album loses its novelty fairly quickly, especially with the album's long runtime. The production is solid. The album sounds nice, but the music is definitely on the more repetitive side. There aren't very many lyrics, but the few that are there aren't bad. There's some fun accordion stuff, I think. I don't know. This really isn't the kind of thing that interests me a ton. I respect the effort, but the experience of listening to this album is a bit too much of a drag for me to be much of a fan of Gotan Project. Neat idea, kinda boring execution. Light 3/5.
Pretty relaxing
***a good, easy listening album
Memorably unmemorable, i.e., these French, Swiss, & Argentines give you vague moods & modes but no true-to-life experience. There's something luxuriant 'bout the record, something that brings to mind penthouses w/ a whole lotta bad (abstract) art on the wall, but the dinner is good enuf to be sufficiently distracted & therefore content. I think the seventh track has it right: this is 'foreign capitalism' ('el capitalismo foráneo'), which means it feigns difference but is really just more of the same. Mostly, it's a lethargic affair, & gets more sluggish as the beat goes on, but at least there's a beat, & the strings do add a nineteenth-century flavor that I dig. If reality be the thing, don't come here. If it be luxury, come on, but expect a faux helping.
LYRIC pls
Sure this is elevator music. But it’s like elevator music that you would hear in one of those hipster hotels where they have vinyl records in the lobby and the rooms aren’t that expensive but you still feel like you’re overpaying because everything in the building seems like it is made of cardboard and toothpaste.
Sort of Ok-ish. Musically it didn't really do much and I got bored with each track usually about half way through. Was it terrible? No - but it wasn't that good either. Sort of middle of the road and non-descript. Good Muzak for a swanky hotel lift.
Good background music and I mean that positively.
Priem
3/5. I usually listen to my daily album in the morning as I go about my waking-up routine. And this album was honestly a very good morning album if that makes any sense, was very pleasant and easy on the ears. it asks the question “what if trip-hop had some sick accordion parts?” And it answers that question with a pretty solid album. I don’t think it lands among my favorite trip-hop/trip-hop adjacent albums but it’s a good time all around.
Liked this more than I thought I would, really nice, atmospheric music
A pretty chill/downtempo trip-hoppy electronica album (light on the electronic aspect tho), with a tango feel to it. Admittedly a unique combo. The aspect I particularly enjoyed was the dub influence - deep simple but fitting basslines, and melodic melodica as the primary instrument with heavy reverb and echo effects. Nice drum patterns throughout. Overall just a pleasant, relaxed listen - it’s not changing the world, but it’s nice for a casual chill sesh.
I got married about 20 years ago and for our honeymoon we stayed in a really stylish hotel and all the music they played sounded a bit like this. It’s not life changing and you’ll never meet someone who says this is their favourite album but the cool beats and tango rhythm are enjoyable enough and it’s a great soundtrack to a British heatwave
the concept and combination of instruments is interesting, but it takes waaaaaay too long to present an idea
Weird
Absolutely no one needs to hear this before they die. That being said this isn't bad, I can't see myself ever purposely playing this but I'm also not rushing to turn it off if it's playing in the background. This feels like a throw in with the "bet you Yanks haven't heard this before" vibe. I can’t 2.5 this so I’ll go 3 , 2 would imply this is bad.
If Bad Bunny performed at a Parisian Cafe and was a prick.
Fun and easy listening. Nothing amazing stands out but not bad. 3/5
This was alright. It had some nice grooves and I was humming along to the chord changes/basslines. But I didn't love it and had no interest in listening again at the end. Three stars.
Fine for background music. I do feel like I’m listening to music while on hold.
Smooth, nice beat, got tired of it before the end of the album
Not much to say about this, its alright I think the part that really held this record back was the inconsistentency, like some of the songs felt half finished, there's no conclusion or anything like that I guess. Something that I noticed is that the songs with vocals were so much better like those vocals added an entirely new layer to the songs and really enhanced them. This whole album felt like kind of sexy and smokey, and I liked that, I just wish they were a bit better. 6/10
French carnival trip hop
