what is this. I'm not displeased but why did it have to be 58 minutes? Whatever. Very pleasant but very background. Some standouts, I like all the songs enough, just very indistinct. It was very vibey though! There was a house song somewhere in there that I really loved. I think it was called " Tríptico." The album had some very interesting textures too, especially on that particular song. The more I listened to it, in fact, the more I started to fall into the textures of the album, and I began to really enjoy myself! Sadly I couldn't love it, just because of how long it is. I like it a lot though! 7.2/10
This debut Latin electronic album is pretty enjoyable for the right mood to listen to it.
This hit the spot just right as I was working on some other things while listening. It never became boring while never drawing so much attention that you can't focus on something else. Perfect balance.
Hoooly shit. That was a good album. It was the perfect music to draw to, it was nice and relaxed while not becoming boring background music. This was great and I'd listen to this again.

Cant say I love this album, but its a really nice switchup. Not a ton of focus on the chord changes and not much here lyrically. Rhythmically interesting and playful interaction between instruments. At times, it feels like a hip hop record and other times its jazz I dig Triptico and La del Ruso. 2.5 stars

the Gotan Project formed in Paris as the result of a collaboration between three artists; one was French, one was Swiss, and the last hailed from, most importantly, Argentina. La revancha del tango ("The Revenge of Tango") marks one of the most significant developments in tango music, one of Argentina's most significant cultural exports, since the era when Astor Piazzolla reigned supreme as its most influential artist. it sees the Gotan Project combining live tango instrumentation—your acoustic guitars, your pianos, and especially your bandoneons—with trippy downtempo drum breaks and ample use of electronic effects. there's lots of electronic records within 1001 Albums... that aim for this spaced-out, somewhat minimal approach; my initial instinct is to beg and plead for more activity and volume, but "electrotango" seems to actually benefit from this approach! my favorite track is "Santa María (Del Buen Ayre)", which features a subtly evolving drum loop, bandoneon flourishes galore, and the catchiest bassline on the entire LP. decent 6/10.

Never listened. Expectations: None - Verdict: Good - This is pretty chill, I like the atmosphere mostly. The Zappa cover is cool. There isn't really anything I dislike about this but none of it jumps out as a definite standout either. Some of the instrumentation is interesting but there are other dub albums I would reach for first.

I do unfortunately have difficulty fully appreciating foreign language projects. I think the lack of lyricism on this album, something that is usually an obstacle for me, was actually an upside in this case.
I listened to this album on a refreshingly cool morning, with a gentle breeze and a bright grey cloudy sky. This album is such a wild, out-of-left-field pick that I am left in complete awe: an electronic and breakbeat-filled tango album. Where the hell did this come from!? Regardless, I'm incredibly glad it found its way here, because this kind of bizarre stylistic blend is exactly up my alley. Supplementing the beautiful instrumentation of tango with driving hip-hop drums creates such a unique blend of emotions, where I simultaneously want to bang my head and sway my hips. The songs here stuck to such a unique and singular atmosphere and aesthetic that I can't help but respect; Gotan Project had a very specific goal in mind when it came to refreshing tango music, and they approached that goal with laser precision. Sometimes I love albums because of some incredibly deep or complex reason, and sometimes they're just a vibe: La revancha del tango is an incredible vibe. Highlights: Queremos paz, Época, Chunga's revenge, Tríptico, Santa María (del Buen Ayre), Una música brutal

Getting this back to back with Bebel Gilberto was a little odd. South America weekend! There's some definite contrast between Bebel's samba and the electronic tango of Gotan Project, though. I dug the vibe of this album more, it's got rhythms that actually held my interest for active listening. Overall, a fun experience! I'll probably revisit this album at a later date.
This is the most French sounding album I've heard on this list, and it's a somewhat modern electronica/neo-tango album to boot. Wasn't expecting that. In fact, this might be the only album of its kind on this list. Would I listen to this again? Probably not. Didn't hate my listening experience, however.

Have not heard of this band - even just the name. Just looked at the song titles and it's all in Spanish. This will be interesting... 1st song - "Queremos paz" - oh this is an instrumental that seems like a trip hop beat with a Spanish flair. Kinda cool. Well, there are some brief vocals of someone talking in Spanish. 2nd song - "Epoca" - similar vibe - but this time with a woman actually singing in Spanish. I don't know what she's saying but her voice is nice. Wait, the Wikipedia page says this is a French album and it doesn't show any female singers either. I'm confused. "Una Musica Brutal" - bass and drums reminds me of that Amy Winehouse song "You Know I'm No Good" which came out 5 years later. This had singing but I still liked it. I also think I hear the drumming style of James Brown's "Funky Drummer" in several of these songs. This is definitely outside my normal musical bubble - which is exactly why I signed up for this album a day thing. This was a fun listen. I likely wouldn't sit down and listen to this whole thing front to back - but I did end up liking half the songs along the way and I wouldn't mind them showing up on my automated playlists. I liked the 5 song run from "Triptico" to "Last Tango in Paris". I mostly preferred the all instrumental songs. Who knew I would like trip-hoppy, electronica tango music? I felt like I was going to like it at the start but it became too long and too much of the same.

I spent a while trying to figure out when this album really started, until I eventually found out that it doesn't really start at all. I guess I don't really like Tango. Tango here mixes with the more conventional dance music like oil and water do. There was some great percussion throughout but it was ruined by the rest of the musical choices here. It's a load of scraps of what could be songs, I really struggle to think who this album was made for.

Cool, cool, cool. Loungey, trip-hoppy, vibey, jazzy, luminous and eclectic all all at once. Could listen all day long and all night long (except for the not-quite right vocals).
I thought this was pretty uplifting and made me want to bounce in my seat. I remember some of these tunes and they were always like good cinematic backing tracks. Very enjoyable.

They managed to turn a Frank Zappa song into boring elevator music. I'm almost impressed.
Some electronic tango, or gotan as the group named themselves. It starts a bit weak, but quickly grabs my attention by covering Frank Zappa. That's awesome. Middle of the album is filled with bangers. This was a very chill album. Well produced
It's OK. Not sure it belongs on this list as it's just medium quality jazzy electronica. Did they break ground? First to do this? I don't think so. It's a fine background music. Doesn't need or encourage active listening. It's fine. It's about a 2.4, but I'm not feeling particularly moved to round up tonight. Call it a 2 and never hear it again.
Pretty good. Mostly instrumental stuff, a few tracks overly repetitive but otherwise an enjoyable listen. I’ll not be rushing out to buy it, but it’s better than most.

This is the 12 Monkeys score. Electronica meets Tango...the fusion literally no one was asking for. RJD2 was probably asking for it. Epoca was the working music for the Mad Men title card sequence. Honestly, it sounds like prestige TV music but Epoca is a catchy song. Weird Spanish shoutout to Thievery Corporation. This is the background music at a bar I can't afford to drink at. This is not a terrible listen as background music. Actively listening, it's a little tedious and repetitive. It's a long album with little to differentiate most of the songs from one another to the untrained ear.

Difficult to rate this album. It starts off really strong. I loved the first three songs. The first few tracks really hit with that fusion of tango, electronic, and it feels fresh and exciting. The tracks just weren’t shifting enough to keep things dynamic. It felt abit repetitive towards the end. The album definitely has its standout moments, there was a lot to like about it and I’ll definitely be revisiting it when I’m in the right mood. Favourite Track may be Chunga’s Revenge.

I'm sure there's a lot of cultural context I'm not getting. To me it just sounds like pleasant background music. A bit long and repetitive, and I don't see myself ever listening to it again. But it sounds nice enough not drop it to a 2.
This was an interesting album and a cool sound. Great trip-hop and overall a good vibe. I don't think it really stood out to me that much, especially compared to other trip hop albums I've had so far on here. But a cool sound and I'm glad I know about it now. Would go back and put on in the background again.
This is very good. The fusion of of repetitive electronica with the Latin beats feels inspired, and is done in a tasteful minimalistic way.

I used to really enjoy listening to tango. Sure, the music is very unique, and the instrumentation isn't for everyone. I thought Astor Piazzolla was truly fantastic. "La Revancha del Tango" by the Gothan Project is just a tired imitation. I don't know if anyone would even want to dance to it, or if they'd just fall asleep standing up. I still think "Tango Nuevo" is great—to listen to, to watch the dancers, and as film music. What the Gothan Project has done with it is completely unnecessary.

I was on board for the first song or two, and then it became monotonous.
It's pleasant enough. Some tracks in particular like Triptico I really like, and the French tango theme is cute. But overall it does feel a little more...pedestrian background music/DVD menu. At least compared to the similar(-ish?) artists I used to listen to...Propellerheads, DJ Shadow, RJD2, Nightmares on Wax, Bonobo, Thievery Corporation, Amon Tobin, Ugress, Dust Brothers etc.
Interesting album that I had never heard of before. Started promising but after the first track when we started getting the breathy vocals, I tuned out.

Pleasant rather than outstanding, but pleasant is good. A solid 4, helped by the bonus scoring for non-anglophone records. I'd listen to this again whilst cooking or driving without a problem.

This album had some moments and had some other moments. Something I could put on while working/studying but wouldn't put it on for any other reason. I was ready for it to be over by the end.

Feels a bit dated in 2026. It was a thing in the late 90s/2000s to take someone else's music and put a beat behind. I'm sure I'm oversimplifying it.
This was alright, I didn't find it memorable, it was generic sounding.
Just mildly boring for the most part, without being offensive. The vaguely uptempo stuff sounds like the sort of music you'd hear in a hotel lounge, whilst the rest is as though you're watching TV and the next advert unhurriedly pans to a clip of a Yorkshire pudding being doused in only the finest juices, whilst a soft voice caresses "this is not just food, this is M&S food". In fact, I'm sure I have heard one of these tracks on an advert from 15 or so years ago (I'd like to say). *turns to Google for pointers* FINISH DIAMOND STANDARD!

Oh what a joy to have something different than an average pop/rock album, which has nothing special about it. It doesn't really matter if you like this music or not. At least it is the reason why I follow this list, to learn and hear something new. That's a sufficient reason to give a 5!

This isn't bad, but not much really happens in it. Latin trip hop music sounds interesting, and they have some good moments, but this could have really been taken a lot further. Mid 3.

Enjoyable! Sitting down and listening to it as one full sitting is very good, put together well. They fuse the tango, jazz and electric funk very well together. Una Música Brutal is my pick of the songs! Iv not heard much music like this, but definitely worth the listen. Now there is nothing that is totally amazing, but an easy, enjoyable listen.

A solid album mixing tango sounds with modern electronic production, though I had a hard time appreciating it beyond the point of good background music.
For when you need an album to put on while cleaning the house or trying to get set a vibe to seduce that woman you just brought home from the bar. I feel like this album is for the kind of person that makes their music taste a core tenant of their personality, but I have to admit, it's a solid album all the same.

El revanche della muzak
The perfect album to have a kitchen dance. It fills the room and is charged with passionate feelings of crazy jealousy. Some of the tracks sound very 90s and have a type of break beat or trip hop style that really suits these songs. I was surprised that I enjoyed it as much as I did and would absolutely listen again.
12/30/25. It was refreshing if for no other reason than to get away from UK punk rock. 7/10
This fuses a lot of things I like. It makes me think of Thievery Corporation or Morcheeba, but that hint of Latin flair and a pinch of French Cafe Jazz makes this something unique, and quite enjoyable. I'll be adding this to my collection today. I really enjoy when this list throws me something I have never heard of and probably wouldn't have ever come across that I actually enjoy. Not sure why it's on the list because the Wikipedia article is quite thin, but I guess I won't complain about a new album I like ⭐⭐⭐⭐
So apparently this is what’s called electro-tango. It blends traditional tango elements with electronic production, hip hop influenced beats, and ambient textures. This album is very much a product of its time, having been released in the early 2000s, when there was a strong trend of downtempo producers mixing electronic music with jazz or traditional styles from different cultures around the world.
2 out of 5. Not bad for party music and one song stuck out.

sounds like the sort of music you listen to at a very expensive tapas restaurant where the bill is fucking robbery. It’s not bad in terms of production and playing, very well mixed, smooth, deffo tango made ambient electronic background noise. Not my thing. Fairly obnoxious and seems very pretentious. Gives me the ick as they say. Jazz brunch becomes jazz small plates.

Electronic tango, interesting. Overall I found this a bit intriguing. Though I must admit the accordion sections made it feel a bit cliché... hard for it to not feel a bit like a french comedy. This definitely has no reason at all to be as long as it is either, as most songs were quite monotonous and same sounding. I'd probably put this on if I wanted some french café feeling at home for whatever reason, but not for serious listening. Weak 3.
Generic music found at your local fancy cocktail bar. Barely passes the corporate music hellscape threshold, since it has some memorable hooks. Not something I would want to listen to for longer period of time. I guess for a bartender, it’s better than corpo-music. Just felt like some soul-less jazz. 2 stars.

I should listen to this album more, one of the reasons I love Tango, which itself is a musical style I need to listen to more. The addition of modern dance and dub productions makes this an infectious and sexy listen.

“La Revancha Del Tango” can't quite decide whether it wants to offer the dance music that gives it its name or more relaxed electro beats. Ultimately, it fails to do either really well, and the result is simply inconsequential. This sets it apart from the similar attempts by Astor Piazzolla, which I “had the pleasure” of listening to a few days ago—I didn't like those either, but at least they were exciting and inspiring. Two of the songs are part of film soundtracks, and in fact, the Gotan Project's compositions are best imagined as background music for blurry camera shots through Paris at night. But I have no idea who needs an album's worth of “horizontal elevator music.”
I like it, but there's just so much of this style of music I can listen to in one go. It's really nice on a mix tape, but when listening to one tune after the other it gets a bit repetitive and you tend to tune-out. It's quite good, makes me think of a Tango-Spanish-style Thievery Corporation.

"La Revancha del Tango" is the debut studio album by French musical group Gotan Project. Electronica, tango and nu jazz are the Wiki-listed genres. Yeah! The album's music is based on the Argentine tango and uses elements of samples, beats and breaks. The band members include Phillippe Cohen Solal, Christoph H. Müller and Eduardo Makaroff. The album opens with "Querenos Paz." The accordion carrying the melody. The beat is a sample from Keith Mansfield. It's mellow and chill. The band covers Frank Zappa's "Chunga's Revenge." A hip hop electronic beat, hypnotic bass line and echoing accordion. A piano and violin are added. Weird vocals sounds are randomly added, an obvious homage to Frank. They up the drama in "Santa Maria" with a violin and cello. A tango pace. Ticking drums giving a hip hop vibe. Outdoor sounds and a woman on vocals. "El Capitalismo Foráneo" has kids talking throughout the song. More experimental with echoing accordion and electronic sounds. The closing song, "Vuelvo al Sur," slowly adds instrumentation. Shakers and a prancing accordion melody. Idiosyncratic hip hop beats played by drums lead to a percussion playing a tango beat. A Spanish guitar and bass. Finally , a woman on vocals in a very good song. This album kept my interest throughout. Most of these songs are fusions of some sort: tango, jazz, trip hop, hip hop, dance, country and avant-garde. Electronic beats are overlayed with tango and Latin beats. The accordion, piano and Spanish guitar carty the melody. The music can be dramatic with the strings. The female vocals add a seductiveness. This is a really good album that mostly everyone should like to some extent.

This is #day487 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… what looked like a promising endeavor, judging by the description, turned out to be a pretty dull experience. This is far from a must-hear before you die. So background-ish that you end up blending into it. This is a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day488.
It's good. It's tango. Tango is always good. Apart from that, I really like the drums in this album, electronica and breakbeats (if I heard it right) in tango is fun! Though I have to say some tracks are not so distinctive if you aren't paying much attention...It should be around 3-3.5/5 to me.

"La Revancha del Tango" has an okay start with "Queremos Paz". The rest of the tracks are just mind-numbingly boring. 50 minutes of repetitive torture I had to endure, I have no idea why "La Revancha del Tango" is on the list. An album purely for ambiance. The sound is evocative of some portuguese bands like Madredeus. However, it’s too bland, it could almost be considered drone, even if it is proficiently made.

The Gotan Project is how Len Houmous now refers to his 4th marriage. Mostly due to the amount of time he had to spend on sun beds with her. The quantity of crisp n dry ye had to buy was outrageous. He briefly became a sales rep to get a larger discount. 1.2 8/10 Last Tango In Paris

Very enjoyable tango with a modern beat
I had no idea about this and went in with open ears. Turns out i enjoyed this. The marriage of electronic beats and latin music works. Its like the propellerheads and bossa nova had a baby. The beats were serviceable in a late 90's way. But the real stars were the talented musicians playing latin jazz forms over the top. I may revisit this on sunny days.
Gotan always does a really good consistent MOOD, and this is no exception.
