Reviews (page 2 of 8)

This was just a brilliant album from a band I had never heard. I think over the course of the weekend I probably played the full album 6 or 7 times.

Amazing album front to back

Loved it

Not on the level of Taylor Swift's Evermore, but I really like this album and the general genre of music. So easy to listen to while working, captures a feeling from the early 2000's that feels so accurate of that time. Love it.

generational bangers

not gonna lie - i was not expecting this album to be this good. the combination of laid back hip hop/pop grooves from the drums with the basslines and the accordion solos really does it for me. Fantastic album.

This is totally elevator music but I loved it.

Absolute banger, this was the album that put tango music on the map for me back in the day (as well as helping me get into downtempo while it was at it). Queremos Paz, Época, Santa Maria (del Buen Aire), Una Música Brutal, and El Capitalismo Foráneo are all very much 5 star songs for me, have them on lots of playlists and listen to them regularly. The rest might drag it down to a 4.5 overall, still very much worth the round up IMHO.

Constantly catchy and interesting, kept me hooked and grooving start to finish

now this.... this was really cool.

Brilliant balance of simplicity and complexity. Just really enjoyed vibing to this album

Absolutely unique. It is like the perfect mixing of Buena Vista and Moby. People who write that this is like phone music please buy a normal headset and amplifier.

Love it.

I just love it, I find this fusion of styles very interesting and very well done. This project in particular is very, very good... but I also like Bajofondo and a few others who explore the same path! 5 stars, “porque me encanta!”

i was not expecting to be such a fan of this album dang

I listened to this multiple times today. Headphones and car stereo. I liked this. Driving through the countryside, autumn leaves falling. This had autumnal vibes.

Beautiful album

What a delightful discovery (althought apparently I'd listened to a couple tracks back in 2016). I didn't really know what to expect but I was hooked from the very first moment. Queremos Pax, Chunga's Revenge, Troptico, Una Misca Brutal are just some of my favourites from today but the whole album is a delight.

Big nostalgia bump on this one, played it a lot in the early noughts. Tango meets trip-hop? Entirely my bag! Fave tracks - "Queremos Paz" for kicking things off and setting the mood. Then, maybe, "Santa Maria (Del Buen Ayre)" and "La del Ruso". This is more of an album album, though - doesn't make too much sense to talk about individual tracks...

Amazing project! At the time it was released, it sounded like nothing else

First time I heard this lounge mix of tango at an argentinian restaurant it blew my mind. Find its a genius way to revive a local music culture genere and remaking it for speak easy and to find a new market with younger generations. I think its amazing and all songs flow perfectly not missong a beat makong this an exceptional well produced and arranged album. Songs may not work individually but as an album this is gold.

This is exceptional. It just smooth, but funky. The use of horns and smoky vocals layered over a stellar backbeat is *chef's kiss*. If you like Wax Taylor, RJD2, DJ Shadow, etc. you'll love this!

Oh man what a great blast from the college past! I remember when every fucking coffee shop and cool dude bar or restaurant around played this on repeat, and it still as great as ever!

YES!

BANGER

Was absolutely thrilled to get an album by a French group during the 2024 Paris Olympics. Not sure what the odds are of that but since this list seems to be heavy on the USA and UK artists I suspect low! As far as the actual album, I absolutely loved it. This is definitely my kind of thing. I like electro swing a lot and this is kind of like its tango cousin. A great fusion of electronica with tango music, and what I think is singing in French. It's something that can easily go on in the background and float in and out of and just kind of chill out to. I think for some people background music is kind of an insult but for me, when it's GOOD background music it can really help me focus or set the stage to relax. To me this is GOOD background music. I am pretty certain I have heard some of these tracks in movies before as well. If not, it's certainly cinematic enough for it. For me, I love it enough for it to be a 5 star!

Electrotango works a lot better than what I expected. I feel if you're not used to the album it will come along as very elevator music-ish, but for me it felt like a great spin to already a very underrated genre

Outstanding

Sexy phone operator music.

At first glance, it could be mistaken for a obscure electronic album made by a Latin American outfit based on the album cover and title. Once one goes deeper into the album, one could be surprised to learn that, while this is a obscure electronic album, it was actually made by French musicians. Apart from that information, and the fact that there is a Zappa song cover and a cover of the title track to one of the more infamous films of the 1970s, there is very little to be gleaned from this collection. Which is probably for the best because any more info could potentially sully whatever hard earned vibe this album has going. More eyes and ears have to be set upon this, regardless of the intentional (?) misnomer.

LOVED this album!!

A revolución in its own time for traditional tango with an updated beat.

Dreamy beats over Spanish revolution. More, please.

Fun! a little too much for a work day but I can't fault a 5 star album, too bad they were one and done.

Absolutely loved this slow vibe!

9/10 really really loved this but I wish I had more to say about it

Great Neo Tango music! Meanwhile the album is a milestone!

Really liked them! Great album to cook to

that cover ohmygod ohmygod WHY didn’t I listen to this when it was generated? I thought it sounded unique, listened to a piece, enjoyed it, BUT DIDN’T LISTEN TO THE ALBUM. I think this is as close as the list will get to art music. Excluding Indian classical music. About that, why is it on here when ANY sort of Western art isn’t?! I’m unaware what any of the lyrics mean, but as I always say, I view lyrics as less important than music, a perspective influenced by my love for classical music. This is a prime example of fantastic music with sparse lyricism (I think they’re mainly sampled). Like the antithesis to hip-hop: technical proficiency! Everybody here is complaining about ‘hold music’. Instrumental music isn’t immediately bad purely because it’s instrumental. The music isn’t insanely repetitive either; the pieces flow and move. How many albums can you name with a more unique feel? Electronic beats mixed with tango rhythm is a fabulous concept, especially for someone who enjoys all kinds of dance music — a unique ‘mix’ (pun intended). Throw in the fact it’s French (the band — I’m aware the lyrics are not) and a front cover with a man’s sternocleidomastoids and right collarbone (mmmmm)… Favourite pieces: ALL OF THEM I CAN’T CHOOSE (but probably ‘Época’)

This was new to me but I really like this kind of latin-infused stuff.

"Época" and "Santa Maria" are staples of my beloved 13-year-old Pandora channel, my having given them big thumbs up in the past, and even having downloaded "Época" years ago before I was on the streaming. I loved listening to this whole album. Not a surprise, as I love me some tango, and I love me this neotango electronica.

I haven’t even been able to get through the entire album yet today, but I am ready to give my rating. The album so far is great and I have full faith that the few tracks I have remaining as my bedtime lullaby will not disappoint.

I've had Gotan Project's cover of Whatever Lola Wants in my collection for a while. It's great to hear more. This was a wonderful hour of me doing the tango in my mind.

Latin with strings, mostly instrumental. Really good!

Great low, relaxing key background music. Really like the vocals in other languages

Discazo.

Helt konge

Perfect album to chill out to for an hour on my flight

This is a great album. lovely Mediterranean /South American/ambient vibe.

I've had this album on HEAVY rotation for the last 20 years. I'm absolutely tickled that it made the list. Hey, one fewer scottish new wave post punk boy album!

Lekker ongeforceerd. Meerdere lagen neerzetten als een eenvoudig geheel. Dat is een prestatie.

Good for the zone

Stunning

I wish all projects were Gotan. The sexy parts of tango with a dash of future, hip-hop, and theater.

Surprisingly great! And I only say surprisingly because this was completely foreign to me in every definition of the word. 5 stars!

Amazing find. Just the kind of album I like. Trip hop and tango, minimal vocals. Incredible.

This album is slick. Hard to believe it's over 20 years old. It takes me to the bar at Hotel Costes and I’m sure Triptico was on one of CDs that bar’s DJ Stéphane Pompougnac released. I could listen to this stuff all night long.

I could listen to these chilled out tunes all day. The first thing I did upon finishing the album was start it straight back up again. A perfect blend of paired down electronica and instruments, with a great French feeling to the whole thing.

Great latino music with a lot of soul

relaxing and stylish never heard anything like it. I've really been trying to get into music with no lyrics lately too and this is a perfect medium

Love this!!

uma delícia

So good

downtempo lazy saturday music appropriated by groundforce reveals but no less good as the dust has settled

I really enjoy this album for it being relaxing but also not boring. There is also a distinct flavor to the sound of it overall, which is different from what I usually listen to and a pleasant change.

A wonderful album. A real treasure.

Chill, groovy, French electronic. Big fan.

Dig it

Fantastic, jam-worthy, underrated album! The beats on here are so unique! I love it!

¿Hueles eso? Huele a... ¡Huele a pepino!

Wooow super nice Argentinian vibes

I liked that album. It was good background music.

This was really good. Nice to listen to while working, but that doesn't mean that it's shallow. It is more of 4.5, but I will give it 5 to remember it later.

love it

Beautiful latin music

Exotic and interesting use of effects. An alluring album with a draw that makes it feel addictive and secretive

Well, this was something else. What do you call an album that's equal parts tango heartache and club thump? Imagine tango music got lost, wandered into a rave, then stumbled out speaking fluent jazz. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - Época - Tríptico - Santa María (del Buen Ayre) - Una Música Brutal

It's impossible for me to be impartial about this album since it's basically the soundtrack to one of the happiest summers of my life. Back in my own country after my first job abroad, I had three months to kill before I could leave again. Having no place of my own and nothing special to do, I ended up living in a borrowed apartment that had, by the end of summer, turned into a Bohemian community. Siblings, friends and half-strangers came and went, and day blurred into night as an apparently endless party went on and on. For some reason this album was one of the few discs left in the flat, and it was playing all the time. It's burnt into my memory, and it will forever be linked for me to that strange mix of weightlessness, excitement and mischief. Musically speaking, I know it's not very deep. It's simple background music that doesn't warrant attentive listening, and certainly gets a bit repetitive after a while. However, they really make it work in my opinion – it's dreamy and relaxing, sometimes mysterious and sensual, sounding both very old and very new at the same time. This kind of music was absolutely unheard of when it came out, and I believe Gotan Project truly caught lightning in a bottle with that album. It's not something I can come back to now - I've heard it too many times, and it's too far from my current tastes ; but it will always have a special place in my heart. A nostalgic 7/10.

A lot of Nostalgia with this trip hop album from the early 2000's. I remember also seeing them live in Beijing in the Chaoyang Park music Festival with lots of video effects too. Happy to see them here. Can we say they were innovative in bringing tango to electronic music? yes and it's a 4.

What a nice surprise. A second French album, and honestly I’m a bit surprised to find it in this list. It’s original, genuinely enjoyable to listen to, and that tango-trip hop vibe mixed with some really creative songwriting works surprisingly well. It’s different from pretty much everything else we’ve had so far, and that’s part of its charm. I hadn’t listened to it in ages, and it was a pleasure to come back to it.

This is my first time hearing any electrotango, and I gotta say, I'm hooked! I'm an absolute fiend for anything with accordion or bandoneon, so tango was a natural interest for me anyway, and it pairs so nicely with the nu jazz and trip hop elements that are also incorporated. I love the oddball albums like this one!

Interesting choice. Not bad though. Good background music! I especially liked Tríptico

"Genres: Electronica, Jazz, World, Latin Styles: Trip Hop, Downtempo, Tango" It's gotta be the most beautiful genre list I've ever seen. Standouts: Queremos Paz • Época • Santa María (del Buen Ayre) • Una música brutal • La del ruso • Vuelvo al sur

Conflicted feelings on this one because the first four or five songs absolutely bang and then it feels like they started to run out of ideas. Very little variety in the bass and drums and this is an extremely long album at nearly an hour. Between the perfect first half and acceptable second half I land at a 4.

4/5: Glad I discovered something completley new. I love the fusion of electornic music and classical tango music. The production on this record is amazing and I love the drum sounds. I love the Bandoneón, string, and piano solos. It makes the album sound very jazzy. I did start to get a little bored at the end because this album doesn't have much variation and some of the songs get a little repetitive. NOTE: It pisses me off that people call this music "elevator music" (same goes for bossa nova music and jazz). Sure this music might be chill and can get repetitive, but when people say it is elevator music, to me it sounds like they are writing it off because the music is not for them. I generally don't enjoy grunge and punk music because the song stucture, instrumenation, and chord progression are very basic, but I try to appreciate the music and understand why people like it. Queremos paz 4.25/5: production sounds really good, nice bass line and drum beat. Bandoneón (accordian like instrument) hook was really nice. I had to look up what the instrument was and glad I learned something new Epoca 4.5/5: Cool string sounds and it is interesing how the string cuts off, very classical sounding singing with modern production is cool. Chunga's Revenge 4.5/5: The drum sounds are so crisp! Nice bassline and cool affects being used on the Bandoneón. Nice violen solo and jazzy piano chords. Triptico 3.75/5: Cool synth sound in background, sounds like a house loop. This beat is not as captivating as the previous songs. 2:40 (the drums are very satsiyfing to listen to here). I like how the song picks up towards the middle and than takes is way down. Song felt a little too long for the amount of content it had Santa Maria (del Buen Ayre) 4/5: sounds like there is a cricket or bird incorporated in the beat which is cool. When the bass and drums all come in, the beat really me want to bob my head. Nice Bandoneón solo Una Musica Brutal 3.75/5: Feels upbeat and sad at the same time. The hook where multiple chords are played quickly on the Bandoneón is nice. El Capitalismo Foraneo 3.5/5: Is the dog barking capitalism because that is how I interpreted it lol. I like the use of delay in the song. Maybe it is because it is later in the album, but I was not intereseted in this song. Last Tango In Paris 4/5: Love the acoustic piano with very produced sounding bass and drums. Pretty melody La Del Ruso 3.75/5: Cool dissonant piano and pleasant guitar sound. At this point in the album I am ready to listen to something different tbh. I like the "wshh" sound. 4:30 like the change in rhytmn and piano solo. Vuevlo Al Sur: 3.5/5: Nice chill vibe to end the album

I wasn't sure what to expect. The French make it WORK on this. It's smooth as silk and I'm sure there is half a generation of kids that were made to this album. It's also got a sexy montage vibe to it so I'm sure tracks have been in movies. Good album. Well worth a listen.

Finally one of the more interesting albums on this list by a French-based jazz trio. A nice, cool blend of Argentine tango with some more modern electronic flair. You've heard a lot of these songs in high end commercials or airports lounges. Unsurprisingly, there is a political edge to some of these songs, such as Queremos Paz and Vuelvo al Sur, which should come as no surprise to those familiar with Argentina politics and the rather large emigre community that exists in France. Great listen, and stays consistent throughout.

I really like this one! I will check out the rest of their repertoire!

This was a delight! Loved it. Thought it was consistent and wonderfully easy to listen to. It’s getting into the mix. 4 Boolean:True

New one on me. Great album. Something completely different

Very cool, very interesting style that grew on me as I listened further

Mall music!

So very almost a 5, I really enjoyed this.

Really enjoyed listening to this whilst in work. Easy to see why some of the tracks have been used in a few well known films

I really enjoyed this for background work music. I probably wouldn’t give it quite a four but it’s close enough.

Gorgeous stunning Tango jazz lounge one of the top

> the Beatles I enjoyed this way more than expected

Love this for background music at work. Upbeat but chill.

good for revising

Unfamiliar with this artist, but quite liked it. Not sure I need to listen to it or any of their other albums, but a pleasant surprise. It had a surround sound mix on Apple Music that was only fair.

Man this hit me just right today

Great discovery. Easily replayable.

This is a fun weird little album. I’m a sucker for bossa nova and this updated take on it slaps.

didn't expect to be transported to 2004 re-living Richard Gere's brilliant role in Shall We Dance

Good shit

This was a slow grower. My first reaction was, OK, Latin, vaguely tango-y, nothing exciting. But more and more in turns into Tango-flavored downtempo, and there are a lot of interesting textures.

Kinda like a cosmic gumbo. Seems like an obvious pairing of music genres in retrospect but this was pretty cool! "Queremos Paz" "Epoca" and "Santa Maria (del Buen Ayre)" were the faves on here

cooler mix von tango und electronica.

Schön, Tango!

I enjoyed this one. It’s full of catchy grooves that made the workday fly by, with plenty of head-bobbing moments. The mix of electronic beats and Latin flair works really well together, making it an easy listen.

Meget stemningsfuldt, super cool.

There’s a version of this album that shouldn’t work at all. Tango rebuilt inside a loop-based, downtempo framework sounds like the sort of idea that collapses into pastiche or polite background mush. It doesn’t. It holds. The key is restraint. Everything is tightly controlled. Rhythms are locked, arrangements are measured, and nothing is allowed to overperform. Even when the music heats up, it never tips into urgency. It just runs a little hotter at the same speed. That’s a difficult balance to strike and it’s maintained throughout. What stands out is how it behaves in a room. It doesn’t demand attention, but it isn’t ignorable either. Given a bit of time, it starts to feel less like a record and more like part of the environment. Little details drift through. Background noise, distant horns, the sense of a world just beyond the speakers. None of it is foregrounded, but it softens the edges of what could otherwise feel too clean or too sealed. There’s something quietly innovative about the approach. Not in a “look at this clever fusion” sense, but in how the system has been solved. Tango is treated as material rather than performance, something that can be looped, contained and recontextualised without losing its weight. It’s closer to ambient in function than anything else. Ambient tango is about as accurate a description as you’re going to get. It also sits in an interesting place historically. Released late in 2001, it feels like a late arrival from a 1990s mindset. Cosmopolitan, design-led, comfortable with blending traditions without worrying too much about where they came from. It doesn’t react to the shift happening around it. It just exists, fully formed, as a piece of work built on slightly earlier assumptions. The tone is completely straight. There’s no wink, no sense of novelty. That’s probably why it avoids becoming silly. The mischief, if there is any, is structural. The juxtaposition of elements, the decision to submit something expressive and human to a system that keeps it contained. It shouldn’t quite work, but it does. It’s also more precise than it first appears. There’s a kind of European functionalism to it. Everything is in proportion, nothing excessive, nothing undercooked. It feels assembled rather than performed. Closer in spirit to something like Yello without the overt playfulness. The method without the mischief on the surface. The limitation is that it rarely forces a reaction. The emotional range is narrow and it doesn’t escalate into anything overwhelming. You’re unlikely to come away changed by it. But that’s partly the point. It’s not trying to do that job. What it does do is create a stable, inhabitable space. Music that can be paid attention to or not, without collapsing either way. It’s a tool as much as anything else, something you can reach for when you want the room to settle without going flat. As an example of how to build something that is clever without being demanding, it’s very well judged.

I really liked this a lot actually! I probably will listen to this again and to me this is the best part of this website, finding out new things I didn't know that I actually like, 4.5 easy

I fw it A few tracks overstay their welcome but I’m likely to come around on them. Queremos Paz Was prob my fav on this. That Ute Lemper album wishes it could be this suave.

Tango meets electronic- I love it!

Of course this is from 2001- this is like when Sydney Bristow would go on a mission in South America on Alias

Pretty good stuff.

I was powerhosing a patio listening to this. I have to say it was pretty good. Nice grooves throughout

Never heard of them before but anyone who covers Zappa is good with me!

Cool fun album

This debut Latin electronic album is pretty enjoyable for the right mood to listen to it.

This hit the spot just right as I was working on some other things while listening. It never became boring while never drawing so much attention that you can't focus on something else. Perfect balance.

Hoooly shit. That was a good album. It was the perfect music to draw to, it was nice and relaxed while not becoming boring background music. This was great and I'd listen to this again.

Honestly very enjoyable but very French.

Pretty fun latin instrumentals and some singing. Good vibes.

Like it. Perfect to just have on in the background during a hangout.

Época

Like this one.

Slapped

This was super good and interesting

Slinky (complimentary). Listening to it a second time.

Almost hauntingly beautiful

Cool vibe.

Not something I'd just turn on for fun but excellent background music

Nice tango with electronic

I do unfortunately have difficulty fully appreciating foreign language projects. I think the lack of lyricism on this album, something that is usually an obstacle for me, was actually an upside in this case.

I listened to this album on a refreshingly cool morning, with a gentle breeze and a bright grey cloudy sky. This album is such a wild, out-of-left-field pick that I am left in complete awe: an electronic and breakbeat-filled tango album. Where the hell did this come from!? Regardless, I'm incredibly glad it found its way here, because this kind of bizarre stylistic blend is exactly up my alley. Supplementing the beautiful instrumentation of tango with driving hip-hop drums creates such a unique blend of emotions, where I simultaneously want to bang my head and sway my hips. The songs here stuck to such a unique and singular atmosphere and aesthetic that I can't help but respect; Gotan Project had a very specific goal in mind when it came to refreshing tango music, and they approached that goal with laser precision. Sometimes I love albums because of some incredibly deep or complex reason, and sometimes they're just a vibe: La revancha del tango is an incredible vibe. Highlights: Queremos paz, Época, Chunga's revenge, Tríptico, Santa María (del Buen Ayre), Una música brutal

This album was really cool. I really liked it.

Getting this back to back with Bebel Gilberto was a little odd. South America weekend! There's some definite contrast between Bebel's samba and the electronic tango of Gotan Project, though. I dug the vibe of this album more, it's got rhythms that actually held my interest for active listening. Overall, a fun experience! I'll probably revisit this album at a later date.

So e geili fusion. De ersti song isch unglaublich guet, denach wirds so chli lagwiiliger hett aber immer no paar banger debii

Cool, cool, cool. Loungey, trip-hoppy, vibey, jazzy, luminous and eclectic all all at once. Could listen all day long and all night long (except for the not-quite right vocals).

I thought this was pretty uplifting and made me want to bounce in my seat. I remember some of these tunes and they were always like good cinematic backing tracks. Very enjoyable.

Some electronic tango, or gotan as the group named themselves. It starts a bit weak, but quickly grabs my attention by covering Frank Zappa. That's awesome. Middle of the album is filled with bangers. This was a very chill album. Well produced

This sounds like the music that they play as you take your seat before Moulin Rouge on Broadway. I fuck with it.

2/25 Starting the album with some Professor Layton vibes already has me interested.

I liked this so much I listened to it twice. This is how I like my accordion.

While maybe a bit too long, the mix of triphop with tango and sampling is very unique and interesting. It does what it needs to and works well as music to relax with

Favorite songs: Queremos Paz, Tríptico, Santa María (del Buen Ayre), Last Tango in Paris, La del Ruso, Vuelvo Al Sur

Never heard about this. Loved it

Cool grooves. I love the accordian!

This is very good. The fusion of of repetitive electronica with the Latin beats feels inspired, and is done in a tasteful minimalistic way.

This was delightful! It helped me get into a trance whilst running, and then I danced in the car. Really nice vibes, but ultimately forgettable.

Chido!

Very much enjoying the smooth jazzy sba vibes. This is a great chilling/ work album. I'm way down with this, might go 5 here but probably 4. The Reggie basanova if fire

Well this one has me head bopping, shoulder shaking and toe tapping all the way through! Fun new find.

I like it maybe a little too long

Pleasant rather than outstanding, but pleasant is good. A solid 4, helped by the bonus scoring for non-anglophone records. I'd listen to this again whilst cooking or driving without a problem.

So smoooooooth

Very good work music

Pretty cool

Loved this actually! Good vibes too. Stand-outs - Queremos Paz - Chunga’s Revenge - La Del Ruso

Sounds a lot like soundtrack music

Oh! I'm surprised to see this one here! It's a cool one! You never realize how much you need trip-hop tango before playing this!

💃🪩🕺

very chill, background music. Lots of interesting bits and pieces. Del Mar vibes.

For when you need an album to put on while cleaning the house or trying to get set a vibe to seduce that woman you just brought home from the bar. I feel like this album is for the kind of person that makes their music taste a core tenant of their personality, but I have to admit, it's a solid album all the same.

Nice Latin / club vibey music (borderline "hotel lobby" music to me but in a good way). Would listen again as background music but not memorable.

Actual good music hidden behind a hideous cover. (ntm.)

The perfect album to have a kitchen dance. It fills the room and is charged with passionate feelings of crazy jealousy. Some of the tracks sound very 90s and have a type of break beat or trip hop style that really suits these songs. I was surprised that I enjoyed it as much as I did and would absolutely listen again.

12/30/25. It was refreshing if for no other reason than to get away from UK punk rock. 7/10

This fuses a lot of things I like. It makes me think of Thievery Corporation or Morcheeba, but that hint of Latin flair and a pinch of French Cafe Jazz makes this something unique, and quite enjoyable. I'll be adding this to my collection today. I really enjoy when this list throws me something I have never heard of and probably wouldn't have ever come across that I actually enjoy. Not sure why it's on the list because the Wikipedia article is quite thin, but I guess I won't complain about a new album I like ⭐⭐⭐⭐

So apparently this is what’s called electro-tango. It blends traditional tango elements with electronic production, hip hop influenced beats, and ambient textures. This album is very much a product of its time, having been released in the early 2000s, when there was a strong trend of downtempo producers mixing electronic music with jazz or traditional styles from different cultures around the world.

Most songs kinda sound the same, like a soundtrack to an early 2000s computer game. But surprisingly, I kinda fucked with it

Heard before: no I listened to this on a flight and it made it feel like a cutscene, it kinda rocked

Who knew tango and electronica would meld so perfectly. This was great, a very chill album.

Fav song: Triptico Super cool, really enjoyed it and added a few songs to my playlists even. Love the production quality and the vibes are off the charts.

Not my fav type of music but i enjoyed it.

"La Revancha del Tango" is the debut studio album by French musical group Gotan Project. Electronica, tango and nu jazz are the Wiki-listed genres. Yeah! The album's music is based on the Argentine tango and uses elements of samples, beats and breaks. The band members include Phillippe Cohen Solal, Christoph H. Müller and Eduardo Makaroff. The album opens with "Querenos Paz." The accordion carrying the melody. The beat is a sample from Keith Mansfield. It's mellow and chill. The band covers Frank Zappa's "Chunga's Revenge." A hip hop electronic beat, hypnotic bass line and echoing accordion. A piano and violin are added. Weird vocals sounds are randomly added, an obvious homage to Frank. They up the drama in "Santa Maria" with a violin and cello. A tango pace. Ticking drums giving a hip hop vibe. Outdoor sounds and a woman on vocals. "El Capitalismo Foráneo" has kids talking throughout the song. More experimental with echoing accordion and electronic sounds. The closing song, "Vuelvo al Sur," slowly adds instrumentation. Shakers and a prancing accordion melody. Idiosyncratic hip hop beats played by drums lead to a percussion playing a tango beat. A Spanish guitar and bass. Finally , a woman on vocals in a very good song. This album kept my interest throughout. Most of these songs are fusions of some sort: tango, jazz, trip hop, hip hop, dance, country and avant-garde. Electronic beats are overlayed with tango and Latin beats. The accordion, piano and Spanish guitar carty the melody. The music can be dramatic with the strings. The female vocals add a seductiveness. This is a really good album that mostly everyone should like to some extent.

Great electro tango(?) album. I never would have heard this if not for this site, and I'm very glad I did.

Nice music! Never heard of it, but it sounds good.

This is actually quite nice for playing in the background. It's bitter during warmer seasons, though. 3.5/5

Very enjoyable tango with a modern beat

I had no idea about this and went in with open ears. Turns out i enjoyed this. The marriage of electronic beats and latin music works. Its like the propellerheads and bossa nova had a baby. The beats were serviceable in a late 90's way. But the real stars were the talented musicians playing latin jazz forms over the top. I may revisit this on sunny days.

Gotan always does a really good consistent MOOD, and this is no exception.

01) Queremos Paz - 8,0 02) Época - 9,5 03) Chunga's Revenge - 8,0 04) Tríptico - 8,0 05) Santa María (del Buen Ayre) - 10,0 06) Una Música Brutal - 8,0 07) El Capitalismo Foráneo - 8,0 08) Last Tango in Paris - 8,0 09) La del Ruso - 8,0 10) Vuelvo al Sur - 9,0 TOTAL: 8,45 (85/100) Current ranking: 137/733

I actually really enjoyed listening to this album. It was very fun, light listening, and I enjoyed the incorporation of techno and hip-hop beats with the more traditional tango. 7/10, 4/5

I very enjoyable listen

Have heard many of the these tracks before in movies and adverts. A bit like Moby - ubiquitous mood music. I enjoyed it, it's good background music for work.

Very coooool beats was nice to hear the full tracks of some of these, having heard them sampled in other tracks. It sounds very of its time which is no bad thing.

4 and a bit ,

4.5 Stars. What an absolute treasure, I loved this album. Such a pleasant surprise.

more tango please

This felt like the Last Tango in Paris.

An oddly catchy album.

I actually knew 3-4 songs from this album. It's ok, but kinda samey after a while. 80 minutes is just a little bit too long. The accordion-tango influenced electronic/live instrument hybrid is interesting. 3.5/5

Surprised by how much we recognised from here - some iconic tango beats. Època especially. Very smooth.

A surprisingly good album! I had to Google it to make sure they didn’t do the soundtrack for the movie “12 monkeys.” Smooth, down tempo electronic with French infused vibes. Will definitely listen again

Had completely forgotten about these guys, despite owning, and liking, one of their albums (Inspiracion/Esperacion). Anyway, a great listen, and refreshing, given the majority of this list. Soundtrack to a cool, imaginary film I'd definitely see. And who knew the accordion could sound so good?

Cool. 4

Enjoyed this

Y'know, if the randomizer's gonna give my group yet another electronica album (I think our third or fourth this month), then I'm glad it at least had the decency to give us one that isn't **just** another electronica album. No, no: it's also a **tango** album. The first one we've gotten, too, I think. So, hey, that'll provide a different angle to look at this album at than if it was just electronica noodling, right? Eh, a little, but ultimately I'd say it winds up in about the same place most electronica ends up for me. Like, I'll grant it, being a tango album (as well as a little bit of "nu jazz," whatever that is — it's certainly less edgy than nu metal) **does** make it sonically more appealing than if it was straight-up electronica. I like the moods and melodies these songs get across. It's very suave and sensual. Which is surprising for an album with a Frank Zappa cover, but there you go, I guess. Like, the accordion on this thing is just... Great. I'm so used to it being used in Weird Al polkas and that one song from LADY IN THE TRAMP that I forget that it can sound **really nice** when played the right way. Though, all together, at the end of the day, it **does** still reside in the world of electronica, so largely it just winds up being background music to me. Really well played background music, yes, and the kind of wallpaper that provides an excellent mood that'd really enhance the right situations, yes... But still background music. It's not something I'd wanna listen to just to listen to for its own sake, y'know? That being said, actively trying to listen to it... This is where I feel like I hafta shout out David Holmes's LET'S GET KILLED again. After taking the approach of treating it like a film score and trying to imagine the film it underpins, I tried applying that same treatment here... And I tell it, it **does** work. Though not as a film. I can certainly see some scenes of steamy tango, or some scenes of a suave gentleman spy sneaking around a beautiful mountainside villa bathed in these red, pink and orange lights... More so, I ended up imagining a **video game**. One about a gentleman spy who skulks around villas, yeah, but... I'unno, something about this album specifically just evoked "video game" to me. Maybe it's because I think there might be a nighttime level in SONIC UNLEASHED that sounds like this? Y'know, underneath the BLEH DEH DEH DEH BEH DA DEH BLEEEEH battle music. I guess this is the first time I've really understood a fellow group mate of mine who's long engaged with electronica albums in this way. Not a bad way to do it, honestly. So... Yeah. By this framing, I'm all for this album. Not "blown out of the water" kind of enthusiastic or nothing, where I'd shake someone on the street recommending it to them — I mean, I'll tell you one thing: this album didn't need to be **this long**... But, hey, in total, it's good wallpaper. And I'm always up for good wallpaper! And I got to Fantasia up a longplay in my head, too, so that was pretty fun. Once again, I come across an album where I see someone calling it "hold music" and I don't know what they're talking about. (I mean, seriously, do you even know what hold music sounds like? 'Coz it sure as shit ain't this or Miles Davis.) Not bad for a bunch of French guys pretending to be Spanish. So, thank you, Almighty Randomizer, for shakin' it up a little with this slice of electronica. I look forward to being bored as hell by the next one.

Might take two to tango, but that won't be a problem when listening to this record. 4.5 bumped down to 4.

Some albums you just listen to at the right place at the right time. I listened to this as I was working by myself on the office doing some decluttering, and it was perfect smooth background music.

I've never sought out French Argentinian tango music before, but I found this enjoyable. It felt a bit like a soundtrack to a French new wave film.

Heerlijk

i genuinely didn't think i would enjoy this album as much as i do. it certainly isn't perfect, but there's a huge returnability factor for me, and that's so crucial for any album.

I really enjoyed the laid back chill lofi vibes of this album. Had never heard of them until today but will definitely be checking more of this band’s work out.

Liked this more than I anticipated. Lively yet measured, good vibes. Didn’t feel like the sound bites and speech clips add much; it works best when there’s instrumental solos or conventional singing built over the repetitive parts. Fav tracks: ‘La Del Ruso’ and ‘Vuelvo Al Sur’.

Super chill. Like early Thievery Corporation, but way more French. I dig it.

I enjoyed this - perfect music for getting me focused at work (and then vacuuming the house ha ha!), just the right amount of interest without distracting me! I'm sure one of these tracks was on a 'So frenchy so chic' compilation I had back in the day - feels very late 90s frenchy filmy! Oui Oui Oui! Morceau préféré: Santa Maria

Really good, immersive sound

76/100. One of those rare genre hybrids that sounds like it shouldn’t work, yet somehow does. Gotan Project blends tango with electronic downtempo and trip-hop sensibilities, crafting a record that feels both rooted in history and strangely futuristic.

This was a nice surprise, I really wasn’t sure what to expect but as the first track settled it became clear this was something good. As soon as the second track, *Época*, began, it was a “oh I know this” moment. I reckon it’s a track most people know without knowing they know it - you know? It must have been on a TV advert or something. It’s followed by a *Frank Zappa* cover, *Chunga’s Revenge*, which is great. Gotan Project are French and there’s some Gallic touches often through the form of an accordion on this Latino themed album, hence the tango, which could be described as downtempo electronic, jazz, and at times there are flashes of trip hop. My only criticism is that I’m not sure it justifies its 1 hour runtime and the second half of the album fades to background music, although the whole album makes for good background vibe.

Funky and interesting. Good voice, too.

Very different - felt almost like classical music - really enjoyed

Great stuff

I enjoyed myself, 4.45 stars

I dug the vibe of this. Its low key groove was enjoyable, despite it not being a style I do not seek out. I'm not sure that I'll seek it out again, but I'm intrigued enough to do so, or add it to a Pandora station to see if it catches my attention when mixed in with one of my low key stations.

I enjoyed this.

This shouldn't work. Putting together two different styles like this: tango and dub. And yet... it surpisingly does work. Very well, actually. And they cover a Zappa tune, of all pieces? Oh yeah, I'm in. I liked a lot of tracks here, they had a sultriness to it. I actually liked the instrumentals more than the vocal pieces. But even those were pretty good. I did not like the percussion of "La del ruso," and the vocals in "El capitalismo foreano." But even quibbling, this was really good. Will definitely have to look into this act more. Top tracks: "Queremos paz," "Chunga's Revenge," "Last Tango In Paris"

Great tracks! As an album, it might be a little boring or repetitive depending on mood—as a background album, it's great. If you need to get down and dance, it's solid. If you need something to sample it's perfect. If you want to sit in a quiet room with headphones on and study the way the tracks are built, then you have more of an attention span than I do.

did i need to listen to this before i died? probably not. but was it cool and vibey? certainly. idk, i liked it!

Pleasant surprise!

Dig it.

Super cool album to play games to or whateva

Wow this is really impressive stuff. I love it when bands do this, blending completely random genres that feel like they shouldn't work, but then pull it off anyway. This album is so hard to pin down making it beautifully unpredictable and easily one of the most unique projects I have heard so far.

Dang, this is what I'm doing the list for.

This shit is awesome. I love how they mix traditional and electronic sounds

Groovy ass album. Epoca and La Del Russo have me Goldeneye pause music vibes and I was digging it.

I have never wanted to be sitting at a rooftop bar watching a sunset falling into the ocean with an Aperol Spritz in my hand more. Jazzier than I expected and I was digging it.

A great background album. Really unique jazz sound. Glad it's on the list.

This is like that Royksopp album from a couple weeks ago. It squarely hits a number of my own pleasure points - trip-hop, dub, international sounds, somewhat sparse instrumental beats - and therefore I really enjoyed it. But I just don’t think I’d put it on a must-listen list. Like I would want to know that someone is into this kind of thing before I recommend it to them. Otherwise I get why some hear it as boring, bland, phone hold, elevator music kinda stuff. It’s definitely NOT that — but some just have no patience for minimal instrumental beats. Anyway. Greatly enjoyed. Recommend. But not on my “must-listen” list.

As a non-musician, my scoring rubric is based almost entirely on the mood an album creates. This one created a very positive mood, and quite possibly loosened my hips a little as well.

This is fun music. I could totally see myself playing this in the background at a party or listening while at work.

Something I'd never heard of, and I loved it. Great vibes. Got a big smile from the Zappa cover. It veers a little into that Y2K-era dance thumping in some spots. But overall it was a great listen. It's at the same time modern dance electronica and vintage French new wave and smoky jazz club. I want it on vinyl. It could turn into a 5/5 after some time to sink in.

8.5/10

Really enjoyed this French Riviera in the 1950s vibe!

Love the mix of tango and electronica

It’s like French house music. it’s actually like an enjoyable house music type of beat

Excellent vibes

I will most definitely be putting on this electronic tango album as background music whenever I need to impress some intellectual guests.

This is the best accordion jazz-rock I've ever heard. This is the ONLY accordion jazz-rock I've ever heard. It's Jazzanova. And it turns out, that's not an accordion. "It's a bandoneon, a type of accordion central to tango, played by Nini Flores. A complex and unwieldy breed of accordion whose sound is crisper and less wheezy than a standard accordion." I like the blend of acoustic instruments with electric beats. It has a cool grooving energy. Interesting that Chunga's Revenge is a Zappa song. My only criticism is that it gets a little samesy. They definitely have a vibe and they don't stray from it but I would classify this as a pretty cool jazz find.

What a delightful surprise! Gotan Project is chill in a late 90’s alternative/electronica way, even though it was released in 2001. I smell jazz, and downtempo, and rock grooves. Some of these songs could casually show up on Somafm’s Groove Salad radio station and I would say “Nice!”. Not once did it get annoying.

This had a really unique sound, and the bandoneon is new to me. Interesting that it's common in tango music. There are definitely tango undertones throughout, with electronic and jazzy inspiration too. The blend of instruments and beats works so well to my ears. Favorites were Triptico and Santa Maria (the beats on the latter were so fun). This album is definitely a VIBE, and not like anything I've heard before.

Again, I find this project’s commitment to Latin-inspired music funny and a little confusing. But I ain’t complaining. Pretty cool little album. Feels a bit of its time, but I would have loved it when it came out and would have annoyed the hell out of my college roommate with it.

Good. This album was one of my go tos in the latter part of that decade. Pretty good album.

This album is a perfect example of why im going through this list. Never in a thousand years would i have listened to it. Its not my style, none of my friends would be listening to it, and no algorithm would recommend it. Absolutely amazing album

This was a hidden gem for me that I really enjoyed. A mix of jazz and electronics that wasn’t affected or boring or self indulgent

Slightly annoying but was an interesting project at the time

Fun and different. It would make good background music.

Fun listen. I like seeing different music on this list.

Excellent background music. That's not an insult. Good background music is an art form.

A bizarre mix of dance, break and tango, used to create a quite brilliant Frank Zappa cover, among some other, less brilliant tracks. On the strength of the fact that it blew my mind a little bit, and left me feeling a bit like I'd had an outer body experience, it gets a good mark.

So french

Enjoyed this album, great atmospheric music.

It took a few songs to get into it, but really worth it. Might be a fifth star when ive listened more to it.

Immaculate vibes.

tango ja elektroniikka jes hell yes. miten voi olla että ranska synnyttää niin paljon kiinnostavaa musiikkia.. ja aina mukavaa seksikkäin kieli koskaan sexy most love of lagnguaage espanjan kieli kuulostaa retardiuelta wau heheh mahtavaa! pariisissa pippelit heiluu tahdissa. mietippä tämä mutta tango suomi.. If the top, this album came out with its best forward. The lo fi hip hop style with Mediterranean vibes was a nice surprise and change of pace from what I expected (this list has is biases on American and British music, but the few international albums thus far have been enjoyable). There wasn’t much depth or variety on this album but I dug the vibe all the way through. I will throw a couple of these songs in my rotation for sure but I don’t know if I will revisit the entirety of this album again, though I am looking forward to digging into Gotan Projects catalog further. 7.5/10 #31/1001

good bk music

This was fun, really good work music. A nice changeup from my usual Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, Alexandre Desplat or Thomas Newman.

Oh, we had fun! Y yo quiero paz, tambien 💃🏾

Latin American jazz and tango fused with triphop. This shit slaps.

A wonderful mix of jazz, electric, and Latin sounds. It’s pretty long for an album but I find that more acceptable with a jazz album more than other genre. Chunga’s Revenge El Capitalismo Foraeno Tríptico

Incredible album! Simple, yet effective idea, fuse Piazzolla-style Tango Nuevo with late-90's downtempo/trip-hop beats and samples. While some may find the result to be too lounge-y or chill out, I found that deeper listens reveal actually quite a dark and eerie ambience that is not so obvious at first. Strongly recommended. Key tracks: Queremos Paz Época Santa María (Del Buen Ayre) Una Música Brutal Last Tango in Paris

La Revancha Del tango is certainly a really fun album. This album definitely has one of the most unique ideas of all the albums here with it combining French tango music with modern (well, for the time) dance music. And the results paid off as this album managed to be a really good one. This album always knew how to keep itself interesting even if it did rely on the same formula by adding subtle nuances to keep most of the songs feeling different. It also managed to do this without sacrificing listenability as there wasn't a single bad song here even if some songs were better than others. I really did enjoy this one. Best Song: El Capitalismo Foraneo Worst Song: Chunga's Revenge

Liked it more than I remembered

Cool, for the restaurant that I dont have 😅

I love the overarching Latin theme mixed with jazzy influences and contemporary beats. Would I listen to it again? Probably not. Bottom line is it's good music but nothing I would seek out. I can definitely appreciate it for what it is, though.

This was inventive, outside my normal listening selection, but I definitely enjoyed it.

Unexpectedly enjoyable.

I expect I could have really got into this album when I was at university. I already have a few of their tracks in my Deezer account. Having listened to this album I think I'll give it another few goes to see if it clicks.
