It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back

YEAAAAAH BOOOYYYY
2009 was a year of music I really don't like, and this is no exception to the rule. The way he switches into falsetto mid line is pissing me off. This sucks. One of the only albums I've really debated just not listening to the whole thing.
This band solidified that I find proto-punk very interesting. This felt like a weird meditation experience. Definitely enjoyed it!
Before listening: I feel like I won't like this that much, not that interested in 70s as a whole. I do really like the album cover. Listening: I actually quite like the instrumentals, not super into the lyrics, they feel a little basic at times. His voice isn't great at some points. I really like the funkier bass ones but not so into the slower ones. I really like the more politically motivated/commentary lyrics, about the end of the 60s etc. "I guess I'll call it sickness gone, It's hard to say the meaning of this song" is great. I still don't love his voice, though... Final reactions: Half the songs were bangers, half dragged for me. I don't love his voice, I think that affected my enjoyment a fair bit. Decent, though. Standout songs: Walk On, Revolution Blues (actually a banger), Vampire Blues, Ambulance Blues (I'm sensing a theme here)
BREAK ON THRU 2 THE OTHA SIDE Alabama Song is truly a terrible song what the hell JIM STOP SAYING "LITTLE GIRLS" End of the Night is kinda spooky and fun. The lyrics are dull and cliche tbh. Maybe they are the origin of the cliché but whatever. I feel like I'd like a lot of songs much more without them, like Take It as It Comes is quite good musically but the lyrics are so boring.
Almost perfect except Animals
Hell yeah. Five! Five! Five!
Lol the timing of this. Actually some bangers but a bit repetitive.
Quite fun, some in music parts, but on the whole it doesn't fully sick with me.
I'm not a Pulp girlie I fear!
Lovely listen, nothing groundbreaking, though.
I wanted to like this as seeing more of the Beach Boy's other than their hits really interested me but I just don't like it. Idk what it is about them. I think it's their vocal production mixed with the keys, I get it's GOOD I just don't like it. Standout was Student Demonstration Time for me. I actually think it followed a pretty formulaic rock and roll formula and I'm not actually sure what they were trying to say, I think I was just happy from a break from actual Beach Boy's stuff
Woah this is like high production value Elliott Smith. I like his early stuff better but this is still nice.
Wow I actually really like this, why have I never listened to Patti Smith before?? Land is my favourite.
Ray of Light is truly one of the best songs ever This album is great. Some really interesting production on here, has that almost industrial sound at times that I love. 4.5 rounded up
I really don't like this. To me it sounds over produced and I don't like the vocals. Getting through this is a slog, I see why they removed it from the book lol sorry not sorry Least favourite BY FAR so far
Sandwiching a one star with two five stars I see! Gorgeous, I love this album. Hallelujah makes me want to cry every time
It's not bad but why are people obsessed with them? idgi Box of rain is a beautiful song Almost at the end and I'm bored now.
sleigh (slay)
Yoooo I didn't expect to love this
Nice easy listening. Can see myself listening again! Probably a 3.5 rounded down.
Im going against everything I believe in but I cannot give this a fair listen because WHY do DMR have three albums on this list? THREE??
YEAAAAAH BOOOYYYY
I was quick to write this off a bit when I saw it but it's lovely. Will likely revisit! Especially if I happen to be sat in nature lol
Big beats are the best get high all the time
Fun but a lot of it sounds samey to me!
Really enjoyed the first few songs but it just went on a bit too long. However I have had roadrunner roadrunnaaAAA stuck in my head for a day so well done.
pedophile :(
I had a lot of fun listening to this! 3.5 rounded up
Ah man that was a hard one to rate. I weirdly really wanted to give this a 4 as I love some of their other albums but this has very high highs and pretty low lows for me.
Proper country, great storytelling, yee haw
I'm so bored The production is nice but the songwriting is so dull. Every song is really long but it's the same melody repeated throughout the full song If this wasn't Bob Dylan no one would care let's be real Also his voice sucks BOOOO
That's my man 😌
Two stars is now also reserved for albums that in no way deserved to make this list. This is fine but ??
Some absolute bangers, I didn't really like every song but it's an ALBUM ya know?
That was weird and I never really knew what was gonna happen in each song. Fun!
I thought it was great but not the type of thing I'd listen to. would probably put it on in the bg with friends type thing. 3.5 rounded up
I'm finding this very boring.
It's fine. Kinda boring. Some moments that are nice to listen to (end of The Greatest Man in the World for example), but on the whole it isn't grabbing me. Remembering and Dearest arr absolutely rubbish. Robin Gibb I'm so sorry but you shouldn't be singing WHO LET THEM RELEASE LION IN WINTER THIS WAY
It's decent. Nothing mind-blowing but certainly good.
Dull and forgettable but not bad.
Some lovely songs but on the whole didn't grab me
I'm surprised to not really enjoy this as I've really loved a lot of his production, especially when he leans into the "weirder" stuff. Im not so into 50s or glam rock and that comes through a lot here and tbh his voice is just kind of annoying to me.
One of the first albums I ever loved, and I therefore must give it a 5
I generally like hip hop, but this got a bit stoner for me to love it. Not bad, though
One of my biggest surprises of this project is how much I like Radiohead lol
Only four songs?? But I want MORE. What a great lil album though
I want to burn big ten inch record from my memory
A nice listen but probably wouldn't listen again
Meh. Generic and repetitive. No one will ever to Hard to Handle like Otis. I really just wanted this album to end.
It's fine, there's some interesting parts and I like the concept, but it's a style of music I just don't care about no matter how hard I try.
Some great songs on here, his version of Fever and Reconsider Baby were especially good. I just don't vibe with the whole doo wop thing, which was a lot of the songs. Still a good listen, though, and interesting context. My stepdad's dad casually mentioned a few months before he died that he met Elvis when he was in the army, probably not long before this was recorded.
I truly CAN move move move any mountain
I enjoyed this far more than I expected!
Some good singles mixed into an overly long album that doesn't deserve to be on the list. The 20/20 Experience does but not this. Meh. "You're out of this world but you're not green" is one of the WORST lyrics I've ever heard jfc
Damn 2009, I was here for this the first time round. Never particularly liked the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and still not loving it, but it's fine.
Before going in I thought I'd enjoy The Love Below more but it is in fact the opposite!
dull
White British guys in the sixties were really trying to appropriate everything huh? Can I not have, like... Actual blues?
I'm enjoying this a lot more than their debut. The songs that stray a bit from pure hard rock are the standouts to me. Also, I feel like I'm walking out onto the pitch listening to Kashmir.
TIL Janis Joplin fronted a band and wasn't always a solo artist. Some great songs on here.
A little samey at times but on the whole enjoyable! 3.5 rounded up Fun connection to yesterday's: Big Mama Thornton wrote Ball and Chain on Cheap Thrills, who was in the room when Johnny Ace shot himself.
A band where they have some absolutely banging singles but I lose my interest having to listen to a full album. The mixing on this is awful as well!
2009 was a year of music I really don't like, and this is no exception to the rule. The way he switches into falsetto mid line is pissing me off. This sucks. One of the only albums I've really debated just not listening to the whole thing.
Homer Simpson, smiling politely
God it really just KEPT GOING As a 1971 live recording it's great. As something I would choose to listen to it very much is not. I could have been listening to Tate McRae
Some bangers but quite repetitive for me.
Black Sabbath were one of the artists going in to this that I was excited to hear more of, but none of it really sticks for me. Same as their first album, some really great songs mixed in with meh. Their drummer is great, though.
Similar to Bob Dylan for me where I somehow love covers of their songs but find the originals to be missing something. The music is great but Ian Curtis's vocals just don't do it for me. I also somehow never until now realised quite HOW depressing this album is??
what the hell is this
This band solidified that I find proto-punk very interesting. This felt like a weird meditation experience. Definitely enjoyed it!
Perfection. I think Bat out of Hell (the song) is what sparked my love for really well done really long songs.
Damn I was really excited to see Beck come up again after loving Odelay but this was just quite generic to me.
Found it quite interesting but at the same time didn't entirely stick. 3.5 rounded down.
It was fine. I just never love improvised stuff.
When Eminem is good he's good, but a lot of the early stuff is just so misogynistic and cringey.
This is DULLLLL. Guy can't sing. Every now and again I get an album that really makes me question why I'm even bothering with this list and this is one of them.
This is so frustrating and disappointing because the production is absolutely spot on. You can really hear Dre's influence in a lot of later hip hop and rap. HOWEVER. Every damn song is about violence and nuts.
That was weird, I had a great time. Definitely enjoyed it more than In the Court
*looks around on my morning commute* no one knows I'm listening to a song called Sex Dwarf
Super atmospheric but I doubt I'd ever revisit it. Possibly the closest I've come to missing listening to the full album, finishing at 23:52 Side note: I turned 30 today! Wild
I don't get it. I'm not a prog rock girlie. Heart of the Sunrise was ok but other than that I didn't really like any of it.
Some good songs, a lot of ok songs, basically how I feel about all rock albums at this point.
nahhhh
That was super weird and I loved it. Finding out Byrd founded the Yankee Doodle Society has made it even better.
This sound like getting stuck on a tube between stations with no signal for half an hour. Wait, no, just me.
I never really loved the hits and the rest doesn't stand out to me either.
Bob please I'm so bored
Some absolute banging singles but the slower ballads didn't grab me. Very impressive vocalist but the songwriting is pretty generic.
You know what, Dolly? Hell yeah!
I'm surprised how well this holds up thirty years on. Sticks with the same topic the whole way but damn it does it so well, and there's enough variation in the music that it works. That bass! A surprise 5/5 for me.
Cementing that mid-to-late 00s indie is just not my vibe. Didn't like it then, don't like it now. Zzz. No surprise at all this has since been removed from the list. I also feel like the mixing on this is really weird. I struggle to pick out vocals and the guitar frequency physically hurt me at points.
I actually enjoyed the latter half more.
Surprised by how much I enjoyed this! Not what I expected.
