Album Summary
What's That Noise? is the debut album by Coldcut, released in 1989. Guests on the album include: Lisa Stansfield on "People Hold On" and "My Telephone", Mark E. Smith (The Fall) on "(I'm) In Deep", Junior Reid on "Stop This Crazy Thing", Queen Latifah on "Smoke 1" and Yazz on "Doctorin' the House". Trouser Press wrote: "In between the vocal tracks are various 'Beats & Pieces', as one title has it: samples, melodies and grooves that help flesh out What’s That Noise?, a patchy but generally rewarding debut." The Stranger called the album a "classic LP [that] married cut-and-paste techniques with old-fashioned songwriting smarts."

The reviews talking about having to "hunt this down" act like they had to venture into the catacombs with a torch. You had to open your YouTube app, grow up bro. This wasn't bad! Not my usual style but I didnt hate it.
Album had an insane amount of sampling and was an up and down experience. For 1989 this would have been out of the ordinary for sure. Overall it was a decent listen but it was definitely all over the place in terms of sound. I gave it a 5/10, so it will be 3 stars as I am feeling generous.
Only just a 3, it's a textbook of classic hip hop samples. The remix of Beats and Pieces is great.
Not all that bad as far as dance music goes, but listening to this whole thing just made me feel like the only sober person at a club
2/5
The Prodigys "Smack My Bitch Up" gehört. Hier hat Liam Howlett also genau hingehört.
Was will ich denn noch?
It does sound more like the nineties than late eighties, so maybe it was a bit ahead of its time. Doesn't make it a good record, though. Can't seem to decide between half assed songs and sample heavy, overlong interludes. More British mediocrity.
LOVED some of these songs and deeply wished i wasn't listening to some of the others so i guess im trying to split the difference with this one. but rounding down feels more true to me than up so
Highly enjoyable. They literally probably don't make em like this any more. Not sure why it was so difficult to find!
Stansfield song an absolute choon! Alison Limerick Where Love Lives vibes. Mark E Smith song interesting, together with maybe My Telephone a clear precursor to Telephone Thing. Might be his 1st collaboration, good on them for having the cojones to approach him! Rest innovative and interesting throughout. A further part of the proof to Merthyrs "1989 was the best year of the 90s" theorem.
Curious and funny.
This wasn't on Spotify, so already that wasn't a good sign. I did not like this. It was dance/electronic music. I knew some of the artists that sang on the songs (Lisa Stansfield & Queen Latifah), but that didn't save this. Not for me!
You’re really gonna make me go to YouTube and click through commercials for some mid techno?!
Still as badass as the day it came out. 4/5.
There's a lot going on here, but let me try to distill how I feel. 1) Album art powerful because it's the context through which we perceive the music - it's the environment and the glue that holds everything together. This album art looks like diarrhea. 2) there is some really cool sampling on here and playing with pitch that I enjoy. (Stop this Crazy thing and Not Paid Enough) 3) there are VERY annoying bits and dated references that render the experience borderline unlistenable sometimes (Fat & Telephone) All together not an essential listen that I wouldn't recommend to a friend. But interesting nonetheless. 2.4/5 -> 2/5
My feelings on this are so up and down. There are some funky trip hop parts of this that I really like and then there's some of that old rap/80s keyboard stuff that turns me totally off. I was ready to give this a 2 until a funky beat struck me like half way through.
1989. Club dance music that grabs you right from the start. Cutting and pasting break beats while still at the end of the 80's. Its so good for a late night work vibe.
Couldnt find :(
I have no idea why I enjoyed this so much. However the bits I enjoyed were predominantly samples…
dorsn't exist apparently
Interesting album. Sometimes it’s joyful with funny samples, cool beats etc, and sometimes it’s just a little too much happy soul. It’s annoying when you have to stream on youtube, but I won’t hold that against the album.
Good album. Had to listen to on YouTube as not available on streaming services
I like plenty of albums built out of endless samples but this was just tedious. Coldcut lacks the meticulous beauty of the Avalanches, the relentless energy of Girl Talk, or even the laid back moodiness of a J Dilla. It honestly feels like they're just throwing well known melodies at you half the time and then occasionally inserting annoying sound effects on top, ruining what is sometimes a decent groove with literal needless bells and whistles.
This is groovy! 4 leaning 5 and might upgrade to a 5 on future listens. I like the weirdness of this, it's fun while still being catchy and musical.
new to me, very cool. still a fail on the 1001 albums book acklowledge a detroit house artist challenge (impossible), but cool
Dikke samples, lekke vooruitstrevend!
No estuvo mal.
Any album featuring both Queen Latifah and Mark E. Smith is ok by me. A stew of disparate samples, seamlessly blended into funky danceable grooves. Slicin' and dicin'. Very cool. One more for the low attention span generation.
Not available on streaming services. Had to locate on YouTube.
Could not find on apple music
A very... unique album. It has a very captivating jungle-type DnB beat behind many of the songs and pulls all of its sounds via. samples from other tracks, which leads to an eclectic mix of sounds. I enjoyed "People Hold on" and a few other tracks, especially around the 9/10/11 track number. Songs could be a bit abrasive at times and it had quite a long run length, but I didn't mind this album at all. Plus the album cover is super cool 🤖🤖🤖
Thought about giving this album two stars, since I didn’t hare sitting through it. But then, I didn’t find anything to like about it, so down the drain it goes. No redeeming qualities
This is kinda fun but occasionally gets irritating.
A surprise, to be sure. Could have easily skewed cheesey, but was eclectic in a good way, with solid production.
no
Not my thing
Rating: 4.3/5 Short Review: Chaotic in a really fun way. Samples, hip-hop, house, funk, random voices, weird little transitions. It feels like Coldcut discovered a sampler and immediately decided every sound on Earth belonged inside it. Uneven, but never boring. Favorite Track: People Hold On
The UK DJ house music on this project is probably my least favorite, but this one has some fun grooves and jams. Like all of them, its 15 minutes too long. But it has really interesting glitchy samples and grooves that make it fun to jam out to.
I like the creative sampling and the sound of the beats. Hearing this and Public Enemy's "Fear of A Black Planet" within a few days really takes me back to that late 80s, early 90s aesthetic that was impossible to escape at the time. Not everything hits and it honestly goes on too long for my liking. Some of the cartoon samples get to be a little too much. I think I had the best time with tracks 2-4... especially "Telephone." I'm glad I heard it, but I know I wouldn't seek it out to listen again. If it had been a thing people said in 1989, this probably would have been called "brainrot music" and it would have deserved the title. I think it's fun in small doses.
Had to listen on youtube so that was fun. It wasn't bad, but I'm not heading back to it.
It took about two seconds of this album to be transported back to late nights in dubious cars with dubious boys going to dubious raves in the middle of fields. The rest of the album just reinforced that feeling. Some of this might be a nostalgia flavoured bias but this really is a great album, that works so well as a whole album experience. I think it's better than I even remember, now I appreciate music a little more than just something to get wasted to. Fantastic stuff.
Great sample work. Like the jump between the dance beats and the slower bits.
Interesting.
People hold on and doctorin the house are very of it's time but also very endearing. Lisa stansfield sounds amazing on the album opener. The rest of it shall we say experimental
Alldeles för konstigt. Ljud collage, edm, hiphop ... Samplingar galore! Inte min jag. En etta
some unforgettable tracks from back in the day in there but the rest mediocre
This is a solid rain after a long draught. Fat drops pelting your face and you love it. You don't care about getting your clothes and hair wet. You just want to be drenched from head to toe.
a total blast. they are having a good trying whatever comes to mind when the future is still wide open. respect the process.
WAYYYYYY TO LONG!
It's really a noise lol
Could not find - did not listen.
This album is a collection of some very good stuff, and some un-memorable stuff. I would have liked this a lot more hearing it for the first time when it came out.
Eh this was fine. I liked it in the beginning but it wore on me a bit by the end.
Really struggled to find this album anywhere. Finally found it on YouTube It's good.
Not my thing
Liked the album. But wasn't really thrilled by it. Felt a bit too long. Good, but not great.
This is good! I just wish it was on streaming services :(
2 out of 5. Some good beats and melodies found here.

Stop This Crazy Thing is one tune i really liked, a great mix of familiar tunes, rhythm and good vocals. Probably the highlight of a mostly forgettable album.
Fine
it’s very dated sounding but i had fun.
Cheesy late 80s dance/pop. Not very interesting.
I've had a pretty good stretch of albums so I needed a palette cleanser to make the next ones just seem that much better..this assortment of sounds disguised as music fits the bill!
What in the 80s after school special is this crap? 👎
Of all the "didn't need to hear that before I die" albums this is the most "didn't need to hear that before I die". Hate when you know it's going to be a long listen just based on the artwork.
I love old 80s electronic music it's just a series of gated beeps and boops and poorly recorded samples over an archaic drum machine. It's not good but they just trying shit out and laying down foundation. Something akin to caveman paintings or hieroglyphics. Highlight: Not Paid Enough
Spotify link wouldn’t open and couldn’t find it there :(
Groovin beats & cool samplea, but really overstays it's welcome
Funky late 80s electronica. Feels like katamari damacy.
This is a fun album
This record massively intrigues me and I can’t really quite work it out. Why is it not on streaming services? Why have I never heard of this band? And ultimately why is this album so disjointed but equally fun to listen to? There are so many incredibly fun, upbeat & groovy bangers to get stuck into - but there are also moments where the record feels patchy and not particularly thought through. The production sometimes feels very dated too. But overall, I have to say it was at least a good ride. I’ll go 7/10 for this - it’s enjoyable and shows huge potential but I’m not fully sold on it.
Some people just don't know how to part like it's 1989. If anything I like this even more now than I did back then when I picked up a vinyl copy with a free 12" for diddly squat. Back then I was more of an S'Express fan who I guess had a more effective unified image. This is more like a compilation of early dance music tunes. Kind of mad it launched both Lisa Stansfield and Yazz, and it launched Mark E Smith of the The Fall's ongoing flirtation with electronica. See also D.O.S.E, INCH and Von Sudenfed as well as the contributions of Dave Bush and then Julia Nagle with The Fall. Check out The Fall's 'cover' of My Telephone renamed as Telephone Thing. Sound nothing like the original not least in including a lyric about Gretchen Franklin who played Ethel in Eastenders. Anyway all that and Wikipedia has just informed me Queen Latifah is on it too. Although I can't hear what she's doing....
Didn't know who they are, but recognised the famous ones. I suppose it was done quite well. But its really not my thing. A generous 2.
A good example of a genre I’m not that keen on. But enjoyed it I did.
I went into this completely blind having never heard of this group before, and was pleasantly surprised by what I found after a quick jaunt over to the ol' YouTube. I love a wonky mashup of samples over a funky beat, and this was an album chock full of exactly that. 90's house production has this weird charm that I fall for nearly every time, so needless to say I had a great time listening to this one. I wish it wasn't only on YT so I could listen to it more often! A great find I would never have known about if not for this list. 3.5/5 Favorite tracks: My Telephone, Smoke Dis One, Not Paid Enough
It was OK, not great, but OK.
Crap
Some of it was ok but not really my thing
Not bad for an EDM album at all. Very catchy and infectious. I think the shorter runtime helps a lot here - none of the songs feel drawn out or overdone. Just a bunch of fun songs to bop along to. The use of hip hop mixing helps keep everything fresh as well. Top tracks: Theme From "Reportage", Which Doctor?, Stop This Crazy Thing
Had to find on the internet, however that’s one good retro album. Worth buying a physical copy.
It was not in Spotify and it was not very convenient for me to find and listen to this album on YouTube - so, I’m giving 2 stars as my default
Bleeeah.
Spotify didn't have this one?
3,4/5
I didn't know this band. Some good tunes. Good album overall.
Eo
What’s that noise (derogatory)? Not worth messing up my YouTube algorithm
This is house! Quite ok but not necessarily my jam
Mark E Smith track was good. Good collages but tiring after a while
What’s that noise… doing on this list?
ergens opzoeken buiten youtube
Fuck yeah! Gimme more of this! Perfect album for this list. Quirky, dancey, fun, without getting repetitive. The Shamen should take note. 5
