Both subjectively and objectively the greatest album ever recorded. Simply put, it has everything. Musicianship, the place it occupied within its historical context, the influence it continues to have half a century later, the fact it is the grand finale from the most famous and influential band of all time, the context in which it got recorded, the production values, the composition values, the singles, the deep cuts, the whole listening experience as an album, each song, the hidden track, the cover, the duration, the diversity of the first half, the medley from the latter half, the way these songs sound when played live, the conspiracy theories, the covers its songs have inspired. Just perfect.

Prefab Sprout
4/5
Great album, wasn't aware of the high craftmanship of pop music on this record. Pleasant surprise.

Beatles
5/5
Both subjectively and objectively the greatest album ever recorded.

Carole King
5/5
An early pinnacle for 70's radio-friendly pop. The sheer pop craftmanship by Carole King is timeless. Only a few albums have as mellow and ear-wormy songs as this one. Songwriting masterpiece.

4/5
What a pleasant surprise! Really enjoyed the production and overall vibe of this one.
I think this has been the most surprising discovery so far on my 250 and something album journey.

Elliott Smith
3/5
Good album, I understand the appeal Elliott Smith has and do enjoy some of his best known songs, but I don't particularly click with his music.

AC/DC
5/5
Instant classic, still as powerful as always, Hard Rock 101
3/5
Good songs, though not so many particularly memorable.
David Bowie
5/5
The best album of Bowie's Berlin Trilogy. Each side of the album shines on its own. Every single time I've listened to Low, I find something new. Bowie and Eno are geniuses.
Elvis Presley
3/5
Good album, classic songs, iconic album cover, but a somehow uneven quality. I'd rather recommend The Sun Sessions, the original Elvis recording that changed history.
Stevie Wonder
4/5
Great album, part of the majestic streak of Stevie Wonder's 70s albums, smooth instruments and great songs
Portishead
4/5
Classic album, so moody and sensual
Public Enemy
4/5
Solid album, often regarded as the best hip-hop album of all time. I'm not so sure this will be the case since some of the music sounds a little dated, though the social and political side of it definitely stays relevant. Sick production too.
OutKast
4/5
Good album, full of funky and colorful songs, though there's an uneven quality (the singles hit so hard, but there aren't many memorable songs apart from those)
Pere Ubu
2/5
Regular punk album. I'm sure it must have historical importance, but I didn't enjoy it that much.
King Crimson
4/5
Whenever I think about progressive rock, this album comes to mind. Great one!
Led Zeppelin
5/5
A mammoth. The peak of 70s hard rock. A landmark in music and popular culture. Led Zeppelin never sounded as great and cohesive as in IV. All killer no filler.
Eagles
4/5
Good album, I was only familiar with the MASSIVE title track and "Life in the Fast Lane", but the rest of the album was a pleasant surprise. Pretty ballads and great guitar licks. No wonder it is a staple of road trips.
Bill Evans Trio
4/5
Great album jazz, very smooth. The bass lines are amazing!
Jerry Lee Lewis
4/5
A punk album before punk was a thing. You can feel the raw energy in this live performance of early-rock classics.
Metallica
5/5
A force of nature. The essential thrash metal album. Full of all time classics and headbanging deeper cuts.
Ute Lemper
3/5
An interesting one. I've never heard about it or even seen the cover. Interesting moody songs. Some moments of the album feel very intense.
Fiona Apple
3/5
Good album, Criminal is a great single. Personally, I prefer later Fiona's albums, but still a good one.
Alanis Morissette
3/5
Fun album, very grungy though it does not feel dated. Great vocals from Alanis.
The Gun Club
3/5
Enjoyable punk album, I wasn't aware of its existence.
Michael Kiwanuka
3/5
Very enjoyable album, I really liked the vibe from the songs.
Peter Tosh
4/5
Great reggae album. Really vibed with the second part of the album.
Solange
4/5
Solid R&B album, very soulful. Solange is an underrated artist
Ministry
4/5
Classic industrial metal album. Love the tempo of these songs, great for working out.
Miles Davis
2/5
Pretty important album in jazz and overall music history, but I did not really "get it"
Kate Bush
4/5
The most iconic Kate Bush album, and certainly one amazing 80s album that does not receive half the love it deserves.
Thelonious Monk
4/5
Nice and lovely jazz record.
King Crimson
4/5
I'm not that into prog rock, but this album was surely a banger!
Taylor Swift
5/5
A masterpiece in pop music crafting and execution. Every single song is full of massive hooks and earworms. This album is the reason I became a Swiftie
Fleetwood Mac
4/5
Classic pop-rock album.
Nirvana
4/5
One of the most iconic albums ever recorded. There is nothing else to mention about the effect Nevermind had on popular music.
However, it is very uneven when viewed as a single album instead of a generational landmark. The first half is stacked with all-time hymns and some of the most iconic alternative rock songs ever recorded. Apart from a couple of songs ("Drain You" and "Lounge Act"), the second half has plenty of unmemorable filler songs.
Kraftwerk
4/5
Great "ambient" album, Kraftwerk really knew what they were doing
White Denim
2/5
I just did not click with this one.
The National
3/5
Not that big fan of The National, though some of my favorite songs from them come from this album
Eminem
4/5
Great hip hop album, a bit dated, but Eminem surely knows how to rap and create controversy. The production is slick.
The Verve
3/5
Can't currently listen to Bitter Sweet Symphony without thinking of the whole Rolling Stones lawsuit. This issue, along with the dreadful pop song from 2023 that uses this same melody (don't really know its name but I've heard it in malls), does not allow me to enjoy listening to this song anymore.
The rest of the album is definitely more interesting, I really like the way the Verve integrated the whole shoegaze and baggy movement into their music while maintaining a rock edge.
Fishbone
4/5
This was a fun listening album. I gasped when I recognized the snippets of "Bonin' in the Boneyard" used by the Red Hot Chili Peppers in the Mother's Milk album (I think it was "Subway to Venus").
I find it very curious that the production and overall sound of this record is very similar to the overall wave of late 80s/early 90s wave of Mexican and Latin rock. Talk about an unspoken influence.
1/5
This record was "meh" to me, which is sad because I can't forgive boring records.
Q-Tip
3/5
Enjoyable hip hop album, though it does not have any memorable songs
ABBA
4/5
Delightful album, full of iconic songs and wonderful hidden gems.
It gets 4 stars just by having the ultimate earworm song: Dancing Queen.
The White Stripes
4/5
One of the few rock albums from the 2000s that feels timeless. Meg and Jack White captured lightning in a bottle with this album. The sheer fuzzy tone of the guitars and thunderous drums make it a great album, but the actual songs are amazing. Apart from the "newest folk song in the canon "Seven Nation Army", the hypnotic "The Hardest Button to Button", the mesmerizing "Black Math", and one of the rawest recordings of the white man's blues "Ball and Biscuit", this album has lots of hidden gems for everyone.
The only reason why I give it only four stars is because it lacks a proper closer that makes justice to the overall album experience.
10cc
3/5
Fun progressive rock album, nothing too pretentious
David Holmes
3/5
Groovy late 90s electronic album. Really liked the James Bond Theme sample on "Radio 7".
Air
4/5
Good album, very atmospheric, the singles are massive and the production is so good
Willie Nelson
4/5
Wonderful mellow album, I was not aware country music could get this beautifully melancholic.
The Smiths
4/5
Solid Smiths album. Jangly guitars, funky basslines, and mournful lyrics. Great listen!
Throwing Muses
2/5
Interesting alternative album, though no remarkable songs
Girls Against Boys
2/5
Enjoyable 90s alternative rock album, great basslines.
I'll remove a star from its punctuation because, before listening, I was hyped to listen a 90s riot grrrl album by a female lead vocalist (never heard about this band before).
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
Great album by The Boss, massive hits and great deeper cuts.
Elton John
4/5
Wonderful album, the singles are massive but there are plenty of hidden gems too
Bob Marley & The Wailers
3/5
Good reggae album, nothing too spectacular
Dexys Midnight Runners
2/5
Good album, with long songs, though no particular high points for me.
David Bowie
4/5
The best epilogue album any artist could come up with.
A very adequate final note on the discography of David Bowie. He kept experimenting and refusing to settle on a single sound until his last years. Fascinating stuff.
Louis Prima
2/5
Enjoyable songs, but did not click with me.
David Bowie
5/5
The one and only truly "Berlin" album. Still sounds futuristic despite being almost 50 years old. Located right in the center of Bowie's fantastic 70s run.
Lots of hidden gems, plus a title song for the ages.
Blondie
4/5
Perfect mix of punk energy and pop sensibility, Blondie is one of the most underrated bands of all time. Few bands were able of combining disco, punk, rock & roll, and pop melodies.
Genesis
3/5
Enjoyable progressive rock album.
Elton John
3/5
Good album, though nothing spectacular. The best had yet to come for Elton John.
Snoop Dogg
4/5
Great album, really dig the G-funk sound.
The Velvet Underground
4/5
Massively influential album, and a very entertaining one indeed. One can't help but thinking about the ramifications to alternative music from each individual track while listening.
The first half is packed with all-time classics, though the second half does not feel as cohesive.
Essential album indeed.
The Cure
4/5
Moody and dark, perfect fit for The Cure's overall band image.
Leftfield
3/5
Enjoyable electronic album, good songs
Dire Straits
3/5
I'm sorry, but my review is biased. I've never really understood the appeal of Dire Straits, though I do find Mark Knopfler to be one of the great guitarists of the 20th century.
The Flaming Lips
4/5
Great alternative album, really dig its psychedelic/baroque/minimalist vibes. Also, the drums sound amazing in this!
The Go-Go's
4/5
Catchy pop album, sounds great!
Paul McCartney and Wings
4/5
Great album. The singles are all-time radio classics, it is wonderful to see how McCartney put some of his Beatlesque magic into his own band, and it worked.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
Great reggae album, the backbone of the classic compilation album "Legend".
The Notorious B.I.G.
4/5
Iconic hip hop album, some of Biggie's biggest singles, such an interesting album to listen.
Pretenders
4/5
Great surprise, the punkish sound of the first half of the album really shines
Soft Machine
3/5
Interesting prog-sounding fusion album, though no particular highlights from this
Fun Lovin' Criminals
3/5
Unexpected but enjoyable "fusion-hip-hop" album
Santana
3/5
Some of the most iconic Santana's songs, but the rest of the album is somehow disappointing.
Muddy Waters
4/5
One of the rawest and best blues albums I've ever heard.
The only reason I don't rate it with 5 stars is because of the existence of "Electric Mud"
Songhoy Blues
3/5
Genesis
3/5
Good progressive album, though I did not particularly click with it.
Has some bangers, certainly.
Garbage
4/5
What a pleasant surprise!
This album is full of earworm guitar riffs and hooks, and Shirley's voice sounds both dangerous and sexy at the same time.
Dexys Midnight Runners
3/5
Charismatic album, has "Come On Eileen", lots of folkish fun
Rush
4/5
What else can I say about this one?
The opening suite is enough to achieve the 5-star rating, but the rest of the album does not consistently live up to the first half.
Great album.
Johnny Cash
3/5
Good album, but At Folsom Prison is better in all aspects.
It has a great rendition of I Walk the Line though.
The Who
4/5
A highlight from the long-lost era of great live albums.
The covers are fire in this!
John Entwistle's bass never sounded better.
Derek & The Dominos
4/5
Instant classic, the blues was never as intense (at least the white man's reinterpretation of it) as in this record
Neu!
3/5
Ok album, I was a bit disappointed because I really dig "NEU!" from 1972
Nirvana
4/5
In my opinion, the best Nirvana album. Really enjoy the way the production gives more personality to the songs (although it does not give room to breathe to the bass).
I would have rated it as a 5 star classic if not for a couple of lesser songs that alter the listening experience.
Pink Floyd
5/5
Is there anything to add?
Kanye West
5/5
Unpopular opinion, but this may actually be Kanye's best album.
I don't mean to disrespect My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (banger of an album), but it has a couple of filler songs that do not improve the listening experience. It still has the all-time best Kanye songs though.
Returning to Yeezus, I think it actually encapsulates both the MBDTF highs while showing the best bits of Kanye's future albums (which have amazing songs, but are lesser albums).
Deep Purple
4/5
Solid hard rock album, iconic songs (BA-BAM-BAM) and lesser-known gems.
Devendra Banhart
3/5
Fine indie-folk album. I used it as background music for working and did not find any outstanding moment in the album.
Thundercat
4/5
I FREAKING LOVE THUNDERCAT'S VOICE AND BASSLINES!
He's like the "suave Flea", a melodic and smooth bass virtuoso.
Eric Clapton
2/5
Enjoyable bluesy album, though apart from "I Shot the Sheriff", nothing too remarkable.
My trouble with the post "Layla" Clapton is that his songs lack the urgency of his first records with The Bluesbreakers, Cream, and Derek & the Dominos.
Also, he is a racist anti-vax asshole, just wanted to say this out loud.
The Mamas & The Papas
4/5
Man, they did record some amazing pop albums in the 60s!
Wilco
4/5
Lovely indie record. Heavy Metal Drummer is a banger
Buena Vista Social Club
4/5
Great album, full of groove and great instrumentations!
George Michael
4/5
Amazing pop album, really under-the-radar compared to other great pop albums from the late 80s/early 90s.
The Sugarcubes
4/5
Gang of Four singed by Björk, niiiiice.
Peter Gabriel
3/5
Great pop album, huge singles, though there a couple of filler songs.
The Black Keys
3/5
Enjoyable album with a great vibes, but apart from the massive singles, no particular highpoints.
The Young Gods
2/5
Nice sounding French industrial metal album, but I personally did not click with it.
Neneh Cherry
2/5
Buffalo Stance is a banger, but the rest of the album feels bland and outdated. Salt-N-Peppa albums have aged better.
Happy Mondays
3/5
Enjoyable Madchester album, though only a few highlights.
The White Stripes
2/5
Good album, though I'm biased because I'm a massive fan of Jack White when he shreds with his guitar. Not a big fan of his more folkish sound, which is the main sound of this album. Also, I love Meg's massive drumming, but this one does not give her that much room to shine.
Neil Young
4/5
Classic "pastoral" album with a heavy edge, a great one!
The Velvet Underground
2/5
The lesser album from The Velvet Underground, great individual melodic songs but it lacks the edge and rawness from their prior albums.
Also, I despise "The Murder Mystery".
Björk
3/5
Weird, enjoyable album, vintage Björk.
Kelela
3/5
Smooth sounding album, enjoyable.
Green Day
5/5
At first I thought this was one of those iconic albums with massive singles but lesser deep cuts, but then I fell in love with some of those deep cuts (the singles are already part of the soundtrack of my generation).
I did not want to acknowledge it, but this is a perfect album, everything is to tight and consistent, it is impressive.
De La Soul
4/5
Soulful, funky, and fun hip hop album, De La Soul were at the top of their game on this one.
Dagmar Krause
1/5
Interesting concept, but it drags for too long.
Minus one star for not being available on Spotify.
The Smashing Pumpkins
3/5
Fantastic mammoth album, though its length drags it more than expected.
The singles in this are iconic, and some of the deeper cuts occupy a privileged spot in the Smashing Pumpkins' discography.
Unfortunately, I'm very strict when listening to double albums, so the lesser songs did affect my experience.
The Offspring
4/5
Solid pop-punk album, has some generational bangers and great hidden gems, I was actually surprised I liked this album more than I was originally expecting to.
The KLF
3/5
Meh electronic album, I think The KLF really shone as a singles type of group instead of albums.
Underworld
3/5
Regular album, a few great standpoints.
OutKast
4/5
Great album, it drags for too long, but is has a wide diversity of amazing songs full of feeling and vibes.
Marty Robbins
2/5
Good album, very cohesive for its time, but only a couple of songs clicked with me.
Crosby, Stills & Nash
2/5
Not a big fan of original folk music without a twist (e.g. Dylan, Joni, even Neil Young). I found this album a bit bland.
Orbital
3/5
Enjoyable electronic album, no particular highlights.
Ride
4/5
Great shoegaze album, really liked the combination of moody vocals and guitars with those high-energy drums.
Nick Drake
3/5
Hidden gem, very enjoyable album.
Depeche Mode
4/5
Iconic, but still languishes a bit on the second half. This is one of the albums that make me wish this website allowed you to rate "half stars", because Violator is a solid four and half stars record.
Doves
2/5
The first song really drew me in, but it turned out to be a regular British indie album from the early 2000s.
Jeff Buckley
4/5
Amazing album, though the last quarter of songs is not as remarkable. Really wished I could rate this one with four and a half stars.
My Bloody Valentine
5/5
Shoegaze may be one of my sweetheart niche subgenres, but this is a perfect album. You can feel the heart-in-sleeve emotions coming out of the sonic landscapes this album provides. "Sometimes" and "When You Sleep" are one of the greatest songs in recorded music history, period.
Jimi Hendrix
4/5
Solid four and a half album. The first half of the record is *chef's kiss*, just perfect; it contains most of Hendrix's career highlights. Sadly, it does not reach five star status for me because the second half is not as solid as the first one.
Coldplay
3/5
Great album, takes you back to a time when Coldplay really felt as the "next big thing". The first half of the record is just wonderful, but things get duller right after "Trouble".
The Electric Prunes
2/5
Average 60s psychedelic album, nothing too remarkable.
Jane Weaver
3/5
Enjoyable record, especially the second half.
Abdullah Ibrahim
2/5
Enjoyable album, but nothing really stands out.
The Prodigy
3/5
"Smack My Bitch Up" and "Firestarter" are some of my favorite electronic songs ever, but the rest of the album does not live up to that hype.
Iggy Pop
5/5
I FREAKING LOVE THIS ALBUM!
Sorry, I'm a sucker for 70's Iggy Pop. This album has one of the most dynamic drums ever recorder (just listen to "Lust for Life"), iconic songs ("The Passenger"), and amazing deeper cuts ("Neighborhood Threat"). Sorry for my biased opinion and rating, but I do think that Iggy Pop deserves more credit than the one he usually gets.
Also, bonus points for those Bowie backing vocals (e.g. "Tonight").
Sarah Vaughan
3/5
Enjoyable jazz album, Sarah Vaughan has a marvelous voice.
LL Cool J
3/5
One of the OG hip-hop superstars, LL Cool J has such a great flow and some amazing samples in this album.
Sonic Youth
4/5
The most iconic and accessible Sonic Youth album.
I love this one, full of amazing deep cuts, but I still don't think that it is a perfect album. Again, a four-and-a-half stars record.
Ella Fitzgerald
3/5
Nice sounding songs, no particular highpoints, great for using as background music because it lasts way too long.
The Police
3/5
Three and a half record. I love The Police's singles, but the full albums do not seem to click with me.
The deeper cuts are full of that raw, punkish energy, but aren't great songs.
SAULT
3/5
Enjoyable album, really liked the overall vibe. I wasn't aware this artist existed, so kudos to this webpage for that.
Ramblin' Jack Elliott
1/5
I'm sure it was a milestone album at its time, but it sounds dull to me.
Isaac Hayes
4/5
Amazing album! I was aware of its legend status, but haven't really listened to it. Psychedelic funk, count me in!
Sam Cooke
4/5
One of my favorite soul albums of all time! It is not a perfect record, but Sam Cooke's voice never sounded as great as in this one. Also, the way the band plays with the songs is just great.
Radiohead
5/5
Sometimes I think that OK Computer deserves the more recognition than Nevermind in terms of their artistic quality (though Nevermind is way more iconic given its own historical impact).
Radiohead's own masterpiece.
Beastie Boys
4/5
Frat hip-hop/hard rock by excellence. Some of these songs have aged terribly, but they keep their teen-like energy levels. Also, the samples and original instrumentation are just right.
Napalm Death
2/5
Not a huge fan of this particular metal sub-genre. I appreciate the energy from the frenetic rhythm, but nothing else.
The Temptations
2/5
Soulful album, but apart from a great musicality in the instruments, it did not speak to me.
Beatles
5/5
Revolver >>> Sgt. Pepper's
One of the most influential albums of all time, and my second favorite Beatles record. In my opinion, the experimentation these songs have in terms of "genre", studio techniques, and lyrics are beyond the conventional narrative of Sgt. Pepper's as THE Beatles' best creative work.
This record is full of iconic bangers (though frequently not as acclaimed as other Beatles' albums), massive deep cuts, and keeps an overall "full album" vibe.
Elliott Smith
3/5
Good album, I understand the appeal Elliott Smith has and do enjoy some of his best known songs, but I don't particularly click with his music.
Suede
2/5
Regular album, I think I'm more into the latter albums in Suede's career.
The Pharcyde
3/5
Great album! The highlights of this are outstanding, though there is a lot of filler still.
The Psychedelic Furs
2/5
Regular album, it did not click with me.
Stan Getz
4/5
The ultimate bossa-nova album, a classic to drink by.
Neil Young
4/5
Amazing album, an all-time classic! I wasn't aware that I would like this album that much.
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
Amazing album! Really loved the lo-fi sound, reminded me of my favorite Elvis Presley recordings. Now I understand more why does this album has such a great reputation.
Radiohead
3/5
Great album, I think often outshined by Kid A.
The Byrds
4/5
I enjoyed this album more than I had expected. I've always thought of Th Byrds as one of those "academic" artists that feel more influential than actually enjoyable. However, this album proved me wrong.
Paul Simon
3/5
Thought that this album was one was "too nerdy" or "too safe" for today's standards, but it is actually a fun album to listen to. I would rate it with 3.5 stars.
Black Sabbath
3/5
Good album, but a bit uneven in quality. It has my favorite Black Sabbath song of all time ("Snowblind"), and some bangers such as "Changes" and "Supernaut", but it isn't as solid as the previous Sabbath albums.
Traffic
3/5
Enjoyable album, liked the "psychedelic Americana" vibe.
Dinosaur Jr.
4/5
Great album, didn't imagine I would enjoy it as much as I did. All hail the Dinosaur!
Stevie Wonder
5/5
Part of the "Stevie Wonder's 70s Flawless Run". Soul music was never as exciting as in early 70s Stevie Wonder.
Miles Davis
4/5
The "Dark Side of the Moon" for jazz. Iconic album, amazing music, but for my "jazz ignorance", not a perfect record altogether.
Bonus points for including the Dream Team 1992 equivalent of jazz musicians across all instruments.
The Flaming Lips
3/5
Great album. Solid three and a half stars, Hope Yoshimi wins at the end.
Leonard Cohen
2/5
I like Leonard Cohen's voice but I'm not that much into these songs.
Al Green
3/5
Classic singles but the rest of the album feels a bit disappointing.
Beyoncé
3/5
Great modern pop/R&B album, but it has lots of filler tracks.
Depeche Mode
4/5
Hidden gem in the Depeche Mode discography. It shows you where did Violator came from.
Joni Mitchell
3/5
Great vibe and songs, but not as memorable as a whole.
Norah Jones
3/5
Enjoyable mellow album, but did not quite click with its totality.
Gary Numan
3/5
Greatly influential album, some high points, but in overall a good album.
Aerosmith
3/5
Three-and-a-half stars album, Aerosmith really recorded some iconic songs on this one.
Franz Ferdinand
5/5
Perfect indie-rock album. Did not realize earlier that it is a perfect indie album, full of energy. This is the best debut album from an indie band, and this is a hard statement because usually the first record is the (only) good one for indie band. Bravo!
CHIC
4/5
Wonderful surprise. I've always thought of this as a "silly disco album" + "Freak Out", but it is actually a great album. Really loved the "orchestral landscapes" that enhance the rhythm vibe. Awesome!
Megadeth
4/5
Solid trash metal album, Megadeth at the top of their game.
Metallica
4/5
Wonderful album, Metallica's greatest hits from the first half of their career really shine when accompanied by an orchestra. Their most epic songs ("The Call of Ktulu", "For Whom the Bell Tolls", "Battery", "One", "Master of Puppets") are instant highlights.
The Associates
2/5
Meh album, though it gets better at the last half.
Kendrick Lamar
4/5
Solid four-and-a-half album. Kendrick really went hard with his debut. Amazing album, though some of the middle songs aren't as memorable as the first half ones.
The Pogues
2/5
I was aware of the Pogues' reputation, but I didn't click with this album at all.
PJ Harvey
4/5
Amazing album. Enjoyed it way more on my second listen (I had previously listened to it for the first time separately from this website. Soulful and raw.
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band
3/5
Great surprise, fun album to listen.
Traffic
2/5
Regular album, some highlights but only a few.
The Who
5/5
The one and only rock opera that matters. The way they recorded awesome songs while maintaining the same ongoing theme during the whole album is marvelous.
T. Rex
3/5
Enjoyable album, great vibe, though only a couple memorable songs.
The Good, The Bad & The Queen
2/5
Meh album, the only song I enjoyed was the closer one.
Butthole Surfers
3/5
I was aware of the reputation of the Surfer, but haven't really listened to them. This album surprised me with some highlights, but I still don't like them that much.
Pentangle
2/5
Bland album.
Dire Straits
3/5
Though I recognize Mark Knopfler's majestic guitar skills, I've never understood the whole Dire Straits thing.
Led Zeppelin
5/5
Killer record, this is where it all started. They did rocked the hell out of those blues standards (minding the cultural appropriation controversies). One of the best debut albums of all time.
Orbital
3/5
Good electronic album, great beats, no particular highlights.
Ladysmith Black Mambazo
2/5
Enjoyable album, though personally I'm more of a fan of African music with instruments.
Tim Buckley
3/5
The most "classic Hispanic pop" sounding album I've ever heard in English. Its whole production and instruments sound like early Julio Iglesias records. Tim Buckley has a great voice!
Common
2/5
Meh record, not my kind of soul.
The Who
3/5
Good songs, but not a great album. This would have greatly improved if it originally included some of their singles from those years.
Jamiroquai
3/5
I've always wanted to deep into Jamiroquai's discography, but having listened to this album and their grestest hits compilation made me realize I'm not that much into their music.
Great singles though...
Talking Heads
3/5
Great album but quite uneven. I didn't really click with the first half, but the second one is such a delight.
Prefab Sprout
4/5
Great album, wasn't aware of the high craftmanship of pop music on this record. Pleasant surprise.
Beatles
5/5
IMO the most underrated Beatles album. Of course, since its their second album it lacks the sophistication and experimentation of their post-Rubber Soul discography, but it does have a sheer pop gleefulness that I haven't found in any other records by other artists. This is a perfect 60s pop album with a ton of catchy earworms, joyful vocals, and some amazing instrumental breaks where each Beatles shines a bit. One of my favorite Beatles records ever.
Led Zeppelin
5/5
One of my all-time favorite albums of all time. IMO the most powerful album ever recorded, this collection of certified classics and fan-favorite deep cuts will never get old. Really love the diversity of songs in this album. Plus, Kashmir and In My Time of Dying is enough for a three-and-a-half rating alone.
Teenage Fanclub
3/5
Nice indie record, love the fuzzy guitars.
Bland album, just a couple of iconic singles and there's that.
Dion
3/5
Enjoyable album, good songs.
Jimmy Smith
2/5
Meh album.
The Who
3/5
It has three of the most iconic rock songs ever recorded in history and in The Who's discography, but the rest of the album lacks that same energy. I'm a bit disappointed.
Beck
3/5
Classic example of an alternative album from the 90s. Iconic singles, lots of experimentation, a couple of great songs, and some fillers.
XTC
4/5
Hidden gem. Wonderful album. If you enjoyed listening to this album I really recommend you the video essay done by Trash Theory on XTC (available on YouTube, I didn't get paid for this mention, I just think this video elevates the experience of this particular record).
Stereolab
3/5
Regular album, really enjoyed "Cybele's Reverie".
Fleetwood Mac
1/5
Boring album. I can feel some of the "Rumours" sound slowly coming together, but still didn't click with this one. Also, the length of the record lowers my score.
Run-D.M.C.
4/5
Iconic hip hop album, but it does have some filler songs.
Lucinda Williams
3/5
Enjoyable album, it aged very well.
George Jones
1/5
Did not click at all with this one.
808 State
3/5
Innovative sounding album, but not as memorable as others.
Jack White
3/5
I'm a huge sucker for Jack White when he goes crazy with his electric guitar and tons of different tones and pedals. I love this album just for "Sixteen Saltines" alone. However, this is a very lopsided album for me. A big percentage of the songs on this one bore me. Sorry Jack :(
Amy Winehouse
5/5
Possibly, the best soul album of the 21st century (and we still have 76 years to go).
This is a groovy rock album. The guitar riffs are amazing. Certainly, an underrated one in the classic rock canon.
Weather Report
3/5
What a nice surprise! Really enjoyed the vibe of this album.
Korn
3/5
I enjoyed this one more than expected. Good three stars album.
Prince
3/5
Good album, "Little Red Corvette" is a certified banger, but it still feels like a rite of passage considering what Prince's career ultimately reached.
Simon & Garfunkel
3/5
Great songs, but the weird "remix/spoken word" songs from the first half really affect the overall experience.
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
Unpopular opinion: I think that late Springsteen record are somehow overrated. Please don't get me wrong, his post 80s career has some great gems, but I think that it is somehow impossible to properly rate his latter records without the sociopolitical context of each album.
This is why I feel wrong writing out loud that this was a boring record for myself.
Screaming Trees
2/5
This one disappointed me. I've always read about Mark Lanegan as this underrated alternative icon, so I was eager to listen to more Screaming Trees music. Unfortunately, I found this album very boring.
3/5
Nice album, full of British folklore. The Kinks are brutally underrated man...
Violent Femmes
3/5
Great album with lovely punk ditties.
5/5
One of my favorite albums of all time. Rock and roll was never as fun as a party with the Spiders from Mars. One of those albums in which you find something new with every single listen (and believe me, I've listened to this one hundreds of times).
I would rate it as a 4.99 album because I'm not a huge fan of "It Ain't Easy", but I prefer to leave it as a perfect album.
Echo And The Bunnymen
3/5
I'm a sucker for "The Killing Moon" and moody, atmospheric music, but this album didn't really live up to my expectations.
Neil Young
3/5
Good album full of killer guitars.
The Louvin Brothers
2/5
Forgettable album, only highlight for me was the "In the Pines" cover.
Rod Stewart
3/5
Enjoyable album, awful cover. I really like the "flow" in Rod Stewart's voice, it kind of navigates calmly through unremarkable songs, but it help you enjoy the experience.
Bob Dylan
4/5
One of my favorite Dylan albums. Really love the iconic songs in here (shout-out to Subterranean Homesick Blues), but the rest of the songs do not live up to the level.
Beatles
4/5
What's more, is left to say about this one? The ultimate monument to musical genius and egotistical ambitions for music groups across all decades and genres.
It has both some of my all-time favorite songs of all time (not just from the Beatles) and some of the most infamous and avoidable songs ever recorded. Even though, it's always great listening to this album.
I rate it with four stars because, in my opinion, the second half isn't as strong as the first one, and the whole listening experience can be dragged a little bit longer than expected in the last quarter of the album.
Kanye West
4/5
Lovely debut from Kanye West, feels like a very cohesive record, some of my all-time favorite Kanye songs come from this one, so it's a soft spot for me. Even though, I do not think it is a perfect album.
Simon & Garfunkel
4/5
Amazing album, full of iconic songs and great hidden gems. I think this is a four star album that can become a five star one with future listens.
The Beach Boys
5/5
A perfect album in every sense. I love this album both from an objective (Brian Wilson's lyricism, the lush harmonies, the backstage participation of instrument aces in the recording) and subjective (this album provides me a child-like wonder and sensitivity) perspective.
Also, it is the home to, in my opinion, the greatest and most beautiful pop song ever recorded: God Only Knows.
The Clash
4/5
One of the best punk albums, full of energy and some glimpses of the social commentary that The Clash would be known for latter in their career.
However, I chose not to rate it with five stars because, though it may come as a political statement, the production does not sound as good as other Clash and punk albums.
The Smashing Pumpkins
4/5
Such a majestic and powerful album. It has some of my all-time favorite Smashing Pumpkins and 90s alternative rock songs.
However, some of the lesser known songs can drag the album experience longer than expected. I still recommend it though.
Sonic Youth
3/5
I really like Sonic Youth, but apart from a few highlights, this album was boring to me.
Emmylou Harris
3/5
Really surprised by the match of 90s vibe and production with a country legend.
Dead Kennedys
5/5
Why do cocaine when I can listen to the Dead Kennedys instead?
The Doors
3/5
Enjoyable album, but lots of filler songs for me.
Boston
3/5
Enjoyable classic rock album, it surpassed my expectations, though no memorable songs apart from the massively-known singles.
Can
3/5
Trippy psychedelic album, but sometimes I think the songs drag for too long.
Suede
4/5
Underrated Britpop-era album. Though it doesn't have many individual highlights (special mention to "Animal Nitrate", IMO one of the best songs from the 90s), the overall "vibe" of the album is great and hasn't aged badly.
Talking Heads
5/5
I need to disclose that after watching Stop Making Sense at the cinema, right now I'm experiencing a "Talking Heads Renaissance".
I remember listening to this album a couple of years ago, the only songs that struck out to me at that moment were "I Zimbra" and "Life During Wartime".
During this last listen, I found all of the songs to be amazing, energetic, and just perfect. Quite a pleasant surprise.
Beck
3/5
A pleasant surprise, diverse sounds.
John Lennon
3/5
Bangers and some filler, but the bangers are the size of "Imagine". However, this not my favorite Lennon album from his solo career.
Pulp
3/5
The swan song of the whole Britpop era. Solid album, though it doesn't have many remarkable songs to highlight afterwards.
Queen Latifah
3/5
Enjoyable record, I'm a huge fan of the late 80s sound and production of hip hop albums.
Ryan Adams
2/5
I found this album rather boring.
Kraftwerk
4/5
Iconic, though it lacks a bit of energy in the second half. My favorite Kraftwerk album.
Radiohead
3/5
I've heard diametrically opinions on this one. For some, In Rainbows is the best thing since slice bread, while for others it is a lesser album for a majestic band. I find it somewhere in the middle, I really enjoyed some parts, but for me it is nowhere near a masterpiece as Kid A or OK Computer. I would really like to rate it with three and a half stars though.
Skunk Anansie
3/5
Pleasant surprise, the whole "brit-rock" movement is sooo underrated.
Blur
4/5
A Britpop gem. IMO, the most solid Blur album.
Fever Ray
3/5
Good album, but did not find any song to highlight.
Fela Kuti
4/5
Please inject more Afro-beat directly into my veins.
Carole King
5/5
An early pinnacle for 70's radio-friendly pop. The sheer pop craftmanship by Carole King is timeless. Only a few albums have as mellow and ear-wormy songs as this one. Songwriting masterpiece.
Cheap Trick
4/5
One of the greatest live albums ever recorded, the sheer energy is contagious. However, it has some filler songs, so not a perfect album but a solid four-and-a-half one.
Scott Walker
3/5
Enjoyable surprise, though no individual songs stood out to me.
Tori Amos
4/5
Amazing album, I was only aware of the reputation Tori Amos has built since the 90s, and this record helped me understand it.
Fatboy Slim
4/5
Solid electronic album, it may have aged poorly somehow, but I find the music by Fatboy Slim really "fun" (and this is an adjective that is not often used to describe music).
Nina Simone
3/5
I was eager to listening to this album because David Bowie's rendition of "Wild Is The Wind" is one of my all-time favorite songs. It is a great album, and Nina's voice sounds flawless, but unfortunately many songs don´t quite live up to the expectations.
The Byrds
3/5
Enjoyable, but not remarkable.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
4/5
Surprised to find out that this is a nearly perfect album. Full of energy and memorable songs. Solid four-and-a-half album.
4/5
It's Friday night, you are taking some cocktails with friends in one of those lounge bars with glass structures and this records starts playing. You made it, life's good.
Even without considering my yuppie fever dream induced by those late 90s movies set-ups, this is indeed a wonderful chill album.
Television
3/5
Good album, but slightly overrated. "Marquee Moon" is indeed an amazing song, but the rest of the album doesn't quite live up to the expectations when you read about this one on musical publications.
Billy Joel
5/5
Five star pop album. Nearly every single one of the songs contained in this album are timeless hits, and the rest are well-crafted songs.
U2
5/5
Essential album in rock history. You can feel the Brian Eno's contribution all over the place (I may have a soft spot for this one because I absolutely love Bowie's Berlin period). U2 were top of the game and weren't afraid of reinventing themselves.
Also, considering some of my prior reviews, I must admit than the historical reputation of this album is actually matched by its delivery.
Bee Gees
2/5
Dad-soft-rock core. Nice melodies but a very boring album to listen completely.
John Prine
4/5
Enjoyable album, you can feel the emotion on each and every song, pleasant surprise.
Otis Redding
3/5
Iconic in its own terms, but it does have lots of filler songs.
Sex Pistols
4/5
Timeless punk record, though not a perfect record IMO. You can't distinguish between some of the lesser known songs, and some of them are far from great.
Roxy Music
4/5
Wonderful surprise, the adjective that comes to mind is "refined", specially for "Out of the Blue".
Steely Dan
5/5
In the end, we all become our own "crazy uncle deeply into Steely Dan". Studio perfection.
Aphex Twin
3/5
Enjoyable but not remarkable.
Metallica
4/5
Solid trash metal album, lots of classic sounds plus a glimpse of the future changes Metallica would go through in the 90s. Not a perfect album, though.
Pixies
4/5
The Pixies record a mellow Western soundtrack. It is great, but still has some filler songs. I absolutely love "Velouria", by the way.
Bill Callahan
3/5
Enjoyable album, a pleasant surprise. Bonus points for helping me reduce my stress levels yesterday.
Air
3/5
Atmospheric album, I think I prefer this album than the movie that it came from, which is always a good signal on my book.
Ghostface Killah
2/5
It has a few good songs, but it drags for too long IMO.
The Police
3/5
I think this is a rather disappointing album. Don´t get me wrong, it is a good album, but I think it doesn´t quite live up to its reputation as the definitive Police album (and as a definitive 80s album).
It has a great latter half, though.
Björk
5/5
Dance music (and Björk's) was never as fun and unique as in this record.
Mylo
4/5
What a pleasant surprise! Really enjoyed the production and overall vibe of this one.
I think this has been the most surprising discovery so far on my 250 and something album journey.
Grizzly Bear
3/5
Pleasant surprise, wasn't aware of this album full of good indie ditties.
Kraftwerk
4/5
Timeless classic.
The Temptations
3/5
Iconic songs, but a regular album nonetheless.
Curtis Mayfield
3/5
Majestic first song, but the rest of the album feels more dull.
The Monkees
2/5
Dull album. Unremarkable earworms.
UB40
2/5
The only highlight from this one is "Food for Thought", the rest of the album left me drowsy and bored in the worst possible way.
My Bloody Valentine
4/5
Amazing, an almost perfect dreamscape.
Sister Sledge
2/5
The title track is iconic on its own rights, but the rest of the album is dull and boring.
Meat Loaf
3/5
I had a fun time listening to this over-the-top record.
Janelle Monáe
3/5
Enjoyable album, but not particularly remarkable IMO.
50 Cent
3/5
Pleasant surprise. I'd give it a 4 star rating but it drags for too long.
The Stooges
4/5
Iconic and post-punk in the most artistic sense of the word. Iggy did find some gold in the 70s.
Miles Davis
3/5
Great album!
Black Sabbath
5/5
Heavy metal was never as fun as on this record. All killer no filler. Is one of those few albums in which each song gave birth to a whole sub-genre.
The Bees
3/5
Enjoyable, but not remarkable. Great Os Mutantes cover, though.
Mike Oldfield
4/5
A bit too "progressive" for my particular taste, but great instrumental music nonetheless.
The Band
4/5
Classic album. Interestingly enough, some of these songs have a funky vibe.
Green Day
5/5
A concise explosion of fun and aggression. Punk has never been as fun as on this record.
Ash
4/5
A pleasant surprise, one of the underestimated great alternative rock albums of the 90s. It doesn't bring anything particularly new to the genre, but it has a great execution.
Small Faces
1/5
Did not click at all with this one. IMO, it drags some of the worst features on the "post Sgt. Peppers" trend in classic rock.
Sleater-Kinney
4/5
Great songs, but I couldn't help it but feel a bit disappointed on the overall album. The high points of this one are still miles above some other punk albums though.
Dolly Parton
2/5
Dolly's voice shines on this album, but that's the only remarkable thing about it.
Leonard Cohen
3/5
"The other Blackstar". While I don't think it is fair to compare both albums given their release year and the deaths of their artists, this one does feel a bit "too moody" in the sense that a lot of the songs sound the same way.
Wild Beasts
2/5
Forgettable album for me.
Red Snapper
2/5
Regular album, no highlights for me.
Booker T. & The MG's
3/5
This is a fun album to listen to! Apart from the title track, not any other particular song to highlight, but still a great ride.
Tears For Fears
4/5
What a pleasant surprise! I really enjoyed listening to these "larger than life" synth pop bangers. I would rate it as a 4.75 record because there is indeed one filler song that kind of ruined my listening experience.
Foo Fighters
5/5
This is a completely biased opinion, but this album is a seminal part of my taste in music and the debut album of one of my favorite bands of all time.
With that said, I do think it is a solid 90s alternative rock album. I'm pretty sure that, in an hypothetical world in which I do not love the Foo Fighters already, I'd rate it as a four star album.
Elvis Costello
2/5
Some songs stand out, but it is a boring album.
Marilyn Manson
3/5
Good album, but it drags for too long.
The Style Council
3/5
Pleasant surprise, though the more hip-hop leaning songs kind of feel out of place.
Frank Ocean
5/5
The most influential and best executed R&B album of the 2010, as simple as that.
James Brown
5/5
I thought this album was overrated at first, but I did have a wonderful and hypnotic time while listening to it. I did not want it to end, and that speaks volumes of its quality.
Arcade Fire
4/5
I remember vividly those Grammy awards in which an "unknown band" won the most important awards of the night. This is a great album indeed, I do think it has aged just fine.
Bob Dylan
5/5
Iconic Dylan, iconic songs. All killer no filler.
Michael Jackson
4/5
I find this to be the best disco album of all time. However, there are a couple of songs that don't feel as essential as the rest of the record. Solid four-and-a-half album.
Bob Dylan
4/5
Good album with great songs, but far from my favorite from Dylan's 60s period.
Arctic Monkeys
4/5
A weird one, because I like every single song of this album, but I don't think of it as a five star record.
Slade
3/5
Rock and roll is so much fun when played by bands like Slade. However, the first half of the record feels a little weak.
Hookworms
4/5
What a pleasant surprise! I wasn't aware that this band existed, wonderful mix of indie and electronic music without sounding like a 2010's cliché.
Mj Cole
2/5
I have a personal problem with the late 90s-early 2000s era of albums. Since the technology allowed artists to record longer albums within the same formats, there was a trend of 60-75-minute-long albums. This is one of the albums from that era which I think drags for waaaay too long.
Cocteau Twins
4/5
Long live the ethereal choirs with an alternative sensibility.
Iron Maiden
4/5
Love the punk metal attitude on this one. By no means this is a perfect album, but it is so exciting to listen to!
Bonus points for wrapping it up with the song that has the same name as both the album and the band (and a killer one, indeed).
Johnny Cash
4/5
One of the most badass albums ever recorded.
Sebadoh
2/5
Meh album, nothing remarkable.
Morrissey
2/5
It is evident that the magic from The Smiths came from the collaboration between Morrissey, Marr, and the rest of the boys. This is a dull album.
Pixies
4/5
Wonderful album, though "Doolittle" keeps (deservedly) getting the spotlight.
MGMT
4/5
Really miss this era of psychedelic indie music. One of the highlights from this whole time period.
The Strokes
5/5
"Make Vintage Rock & Roll Great Again."
As a Mexican, I'm terribly sorry for using a variation of the aforementioned fascist campaign slogan, but this is indeed the best description of the effect this album had on rock and indie music.
It hasn't aged a bit over these 20 years.
Arrested Development
4/5
I hate that the "alternative hip hop" wave became just a footnote in the genre's history during the fruitful 90s. Arrested Development deserves a higher acclamation as one of hip hop's most interesting groups.
This is an album full of life and musicality.
Robbie Williams
3/5
Enjoyable album, the hits haven't aged a bit, and there are a couple of hidden gems.
Not a remarkable album still.
Beastie Boys
4/5
A disappointing experience for me. This is my favorite Beastie Boys album, so I was very excited when this was revealed as my album of the day. However, it was not the perfect experience I had foreseen; this album has some flaws when listened to from beginning to end. Still a four-star album for me, though.
Duke Ellington
4/5
Sheer musicality and excellence.
Leonard Cohen
4/5
Pleasant surprise, really good song craftsmanship.
Bauhaus
3/5
A couple of good songs, but a pretty average album IMO.
X-Ray Spex
4/5
I freaking love the sax on this album!
George Harrison
5/5
An (kind of) unexpected surprise, but I enjoyed every single minute of this record.
Steely Dan
4/5
Pleasant surprise, I'm slowly becoming aware of my transition into a yacht-rock aficionado.
Alice Cooper
2/5
It has some massive bangers ("Billion Dollar Babies" and "No More Mr. Nice Guy"), but the rest of the album is very subpar.
Madonna
4/5
Pleasant surprise, really enjoyed the combination of Madonna's pop sensibility with 90s trip-hop/electronica/moody songs.
The Youngbloods
3/5
Enjoyable album but far from remarkable.
Beatles
5/5
Both subjectively and objectively the greatest album ever recorded.
Simply put, it has everything. Musicianship, the place it occupied within its historical context, the influence it continues to have half a century later, the fact it is the grand finale from the most famous and influential band of all time, the context in which it got recorded, the production values, the composition values, the singles, the deep cuts, the whole listening experience as an album, each song, the hidden track, the cover, the duration, the diversity of the first half, the medley from the latter half, the way these songs sound when played live, the conspiracy theories, the covers its songs have inspired. Just perfect.
B.B. King
4/5
Straight-to-the-point, a live album full of energy. A great introduction to one of the best guitar players of all time.
Aerosmith
3/5
Good album, but it feels unbalanced because the singles are awesome but the rest of the album, not that much.
The Everly Brothers
3/5
Pretty songs, but apart from the banger that is "Love Hurts" (wasn't aware that Nazareth were doing a cover), nothing too remarkable.
Deee-Lite
3/5
Fun album with lots of filler.
John Coltrane
5/5
If you look in a dictionary for "drum powerhouse", you'll find a picture of the liner credits of Elvin Jones' performance in this album.
Just brutal.
Keith Jarrett
4/5
Sweet piano music, highly recommend.
Talk Talk
3/5
Good album, nothing remarkable whatsoever.
Syd Barrett
3/5
Liked the overall vibe of the album, but the "gimmick" runs out in the middle of the album.
The Specials
4/5
Sorry for the pun, but this is indeed a "Special" album.
Nas
5/5
Masterpiece.
Sly & The Family Stone
4/5
Almost a perfect record. IMO "Sex Machine" lasts too long and kind of loses the energetic vibe of the whole album.
A masterclass in funk nonetheless
Primal Scream
4/5
I remember when I was 14 years old and I thought this to be one of the superior albums of the 90s. Boy, I was wrong.
Still a great album nonetheless, but the "baggy/Madchester" gimmick does not last for the whole album.
I still had fun revisiting it, though.
Cyndi Lauper
3/5
Iconic singles and surprising B-sides. However, the overall albums feels lopsided.
Stan Getz
3/5
Background music, and I mean this in both the best and worst way possible.
Steely Dan
4/5
Studio craftmanship at its finest, almost a perfect record.
Michael Jackson
4/5
Iconic record, though the second half doesn't have the same force as the first.
Beatles
4/5
Awesome album, lots of iconic songs, and you can really feel the progression in the Beatles' songwriting quality, but there are still a couple of filler songs IMO.
Cee Lo Green
2/5
Meh album from the early 2000s.
Mercury Rev
3/5
A couple of highlights, but an average album.
David Crosby
3/5
Good songs, great vibe.
Beastie Boys
3/5
Enjoyable, though not remarkable.
Pulp
5/5
The best britpop album ever recorded (I wouldn't properly consider Oasis as a britpop group).
Blink and you'll miss so many hidden gems full of musicality and personality.
Pleasant surprise.
Skepta
3/5
Pleasant surprise.
The Kinks
4/5
Pastoral album, you can really taste the English folklore in an exciting and interesting way.
Faith No More
4/5
Solid four-and-a-half album. The way Faith No More managed to flow between different music subgenres is underrated.
The Stone Roses
4/5
Almost a perfect album. The blending of psychedelia and proto trip hop (with some tints of classic rock) is breathtaking.
Just a couple filler tracks from being a perfect record.
4/5
The most majestic britpop ever got to be.
This album should actually get minus points because of the high quality of all the B-sides that were left out of the album ("Acquiesce" is easily a top 5 song in Oasis' whole discography).
Lupe Fiasco
4/5
Pleasant surprise. I had preconceived it as one of those "early aughts hip hop albums that drag for too long instead of going straight to the point", but there are some certified bangers on this one.
Alice In Chains
4/5
Solid metal album, a couple of not-remarkable songs in the second third of the album, but a great listening experience overall.
It easily has the best album closer to the whole grunge era.
Embrace the darkness.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
3/5
The end of Neil Young "imperial era". It houses some of Neil's best-written songs, but there are a couple of unremarkable fillers.
Arcade Fire
3/5
Interesting album, though its predecessor and successor albums are way greater.
Supertramp
2/5
Good production and instruments, but boring songs.
Tim Buckley
1/5
Boring psychedelic album (never thought I'd use those two words in the same sentence).
Burning Spear
3/5
Enjoyable album, not many remarkable songs.
The Prodigy
3/5
Similar to its "fat" successor (which I listened to a couple of enlisted albums before), the singles are massive but the rest of the album does not quite live up to them.
Fugees
3/5
I totally understand the historical importance of this album, but I found its listening experience a bit dull.
Lots of highs and lows on this one.
Soundgarden
4/5
Amazing album. Not a perfect one (the album finishes on a lesser note), but still a great time listening to it.
New Order
4/5
Amazing album, one banger after another. The only things that keep this from being a five-star album are a couple of songs on the second half.
Kacey Musgraves
4/5
Amazing album. The songs in the middle feel kind of forgettable, but the last quarter of the album is banger after banger.
Big fan of the way Kacey printed her sensitivity into these songs.
Prince
4/5
Some of Prince's greatest ever recorded songs mixed with some dull pieces make this an uneven yet fascinating album.
Van Halen
4/5
Solid Van Halen record. It houses some of the most iconic songs of their career, with a couple of hidden gems. Not the best Van Halen record, but still a great time listening to it.
Elliott Smith
4/5
Lovely surprise. Did not expect that amazing electric guitar sound throughout the record.
PJ Harvey
2/5
I must say listening to this album kind of disappointed me. I found it boring.
Motörhead
3/5
Great live album, full of energy, though the middle third of the album is not as memorable as the other two-thirds. Good three-and-a-half record.
David Gray
2/5
Boring album, nothing remarkable.
ZZ Top
3/5
A fun album to slightly headbang to, but after a couple of songs it sounds too repetitive.
The xx
2/5
A lullaby album in both the best and worst sense of the word. I really like a couple of songs from this album, but overall, I do think this is a fairly boring and overrated album.
There, I said it, now take away my "late millennial/early Gen Z" credential.
The Crusaders
4/5
This album replicates the type of "Cosmopolitan sound" that I imagine when I think of cocktail bars, a great experience.
Eagles
2/5
Disappointing album. The only stand-out track is "Take It Easy", the rest of the album is plain boring.
New Order
3/5
Enjoyable album, though it does not have any songs with a lasting impact like other New Order albums.
Great vibe, but you can't actually tell one song from another.
Three-and-a-half-star record.
Pink Floyd
5/5
Peak Pink Floyd sans the concept. Five (well, technically four) killer tracks.
Pearl Jam
4/5
A solid one, one of the best grunge albums ever recorded. The first half is perfect and explosive, but the second half goes a bit dull by the last songs.
Bee Gees
1/5
Lame, dull, and boring. No falsetto whatsoever.
The Coral
4/5
What would happen if The Byrds, 60s Pink Floyd, and The Zombies had a threesome?
R.E.M.
3/5
I've never been a massive fan of R.E.M., I really like some of their individual hits, but I had never listened to one of their albums.
This experience confirmed me and R.E.M. just don't click. A few highlights. but an overall dull album for me.
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
4/5
My favorite Crosby, Stills, & Nash album... because it has Neil Young.
Great moody and "post-hippie" songs.
Lorde
5/5
I fell in love with this album when it first got released back in 2016, but curiously enough, it had been a while since the last time I listened to it from start to end. Somehow, I felt worried because I wasn't sure how well it had aged to my particular taste after all of these years.
It still bangs! Instant classic, all killer no filler.
Everything But The Girl
3/5
Lovely background music, which is itself both a pro and a con in my book.
I previously thought this group only recorded moody electronic music.
Roxy Music
3/5
Classy record, though the first half is way more memorable than the latter half.
The Beach Boys
3/5
It was an odd coincidence to get this album generated the day after Brian Wilson died, so I was naturally interested in this record.
Sadly, it did not live up to my expectations. Do not get me wrong, I still think of this as a great, mellow album. However, I got bored with half of the songs on this album.
An uneven good record nonetheless.
Nick Drake
3/5
Pleasant surprise, not my personal cup of tea but still an enjoyable album.
Sade
5/5
Flawless and sophisticated. I didn't expect I would rate this with 5 stars, but it is the only logical conclusion to such an amazing album.
PS: Yacht-rock and sophisti-pop are my kryptonite.
Badly Drawn Boy
2/5
A handful of good songs, the rest is remarkable.
MC Solaar
3/5
Pleasant surprise, rap does hit hard when sung in French.
Germs
3/5
Good punk album, but not remarkable at all.
John Cale
3/5
Lovely ditties, nothing much to add.
Brian Eno
3/5
Trippy, leans too much on the whole "Arabic exotic world" as a trope, but I think this is a fine album.
Shack
1/5
I do not understand why this album is included on the 1000 albums list.
Pretty forgettable and mediocre record.
Living Colour
3/5
It starts with a certified banger, and then drags for too long on some unremarkable songs. I won't lie, this album was a letdown.
Still an underrated hard rock band though.
Christine and the Queens
3/5
Solid three-and-a-half album. The only thing missing from this album is one "larger-than-life" single.
Bon Jovi
4/5
Good time rock and roll. More solid than expected.
The Beta Band
3/5
One of those "vibes" kind of album. No particular highlights, but a pleasant experience nonetheless.
Happy Mondays
3/5
Good album, though its chaotic energy does not give me the motivation to revisit it.
Ravi Shankar
3/5
I enjoyed this album much more than I expected. Guess I'm into Indian traditional drone music now.
The Vines
2/5
Good singles, dull fillers.
Dirty Projectors
1/5
I only clicked with one song, I feel disappointed
Lauryn Hill
5/5
I had always thought of this album as one of those GOATed albums with a heavier "social relevance and glass ceiling" component (which is indeed important) than the actual music, but listening to it from start to finish made me realize this is indeed a five-star album.
Madness
2/5
A rather inconsequential album.
Massive Attack
3/5
Kind of a mixed bag; there are both bangers and certified lullabies on this record.
Charles Mingus
4/5
Iconic and timeless.
Le Tigre
5/5
What a lovely surprise. I guess I'm a sucker for dance punk now.
The Fall
2/5
Good songs, but a forgettable listening experience.
TLC
4/5
One of the sexiest albums I've ever listened to.
Holger Czukay
4/5
This is the exact type of album why I joined the One Album A Day site. A weird-sounding but still fascinating funky and experimental record. I would have never listened to this record without this site.
Travis
2/5
Boring. Late 90s albums are either masterpieces or boring trash.
Robert Wyatt
3/5
Pleasant surprise, great song craftsmanship.
A Tribe Called Quest
4/5
Amazing and timeless album, though I would not consider it a perfect album.
It is a rather strange situation, because I think the individual songs are flawless, but as a whole, the album feels like it is missing "something".
Joy Division
5/5
One of the best post-punk albums I've ever listened to. No filler songs from my end, just somber feelings and echoes.
Black Sabbath
4/5
The undisputed cornerstone of heavy metal. It is actually fascinating to discover how much of this album's musicality is actually built upon blues and jazz musicality. I love this album, but I still think the second half drags for too long. Solid four-and-a-half record.
Dr. Dre
4/5
I would consider it a 5-star album if it didn't have those annoying and terribly aged skits between songs. The production is flawless, the samples are amazing, the rhymes are memorable, and the party is endless.
John Lennon
4/5
Raw feelings, good music.
Paul Weller
1/5
Dull legacy rock albums from the 90s and 2000s, one of my most dreaded sub-genres.
The Jam kicks ass, by the way.
Talking Heads
5/5
These heads can indeed talk!
Perfect record, from start to finish.
Beatles
5/5
Sheer musical bliss.
One of the most perfect pop records ever recorded, and a heavily underrated album in The Beatles' discography.
Pet Shop Boys
4/5
Enjoyable pop album, full of pleasant surprises.
Youssou N'Dour
3/5
Fun album, nothing too remarkable.
American Music Club
2/5
Meh background music.
Hole
3/5
Half iconic songs, half generic rock songs that could be part of the "Cars" soundtrack.
Peter Gabriel
3/5
I've never fully gotten into the whole "Peter Gabriel is an artist powerhouse" thing besides 1986's So, so (pun intended) I was eager to give him an opportunity.
Enjoyable album, diverse sounds and "sub-genres", but I did not click with this one that much.
Drive-By Truckers
2/5
This could have been a solid single album with those country-rock sounds and '70s nostalgia vibe. However, they stretched the duration of the record so much that it became a mediocre double album instead.
Saint Etienne
3/5
Mellow 90s electronic music album. A big percentage of filler, but the killer tracks make it worthwhile.
John Martyn
2/5
Unremarkable album.
Jorge Ben Jor
4/5
One of the most fun listening experiences this daily album challenge has provided me.
The sheer musicality, rhythm, and funky energy just exploded.
Sadly, the second quarter of the album lacks a bit of power; the other three quarters are perfect.
System Of A Down
4/5
Good album, though there are some moments where it feels "too gimmicky". I ended up liking far more songs than I originally expected.
The Cult
3/5
In paper, The Cult should be one of my favorite bands. They are a hard rock group with a gothic sensitivity. However, I haven't really clicked with them apart from their most iconic singles.
This is a fun album to listen to, but I can't actually recognize most of the songs.
Lou Reed
5/5
Oh, to be a young, glamorous queer icon in 70s NYC.
Flawless...
The Jam
2/5
Dull album.
Just found out The Jam is more of a singles band than an album band.
The Sabres Of Paradise
2/5
Interesting songs, but it drags for waaaaaaay too long.
Now I'm 100% sure that artificially increasing the album's duration is the capital sin of late 90s/early 00s records.
Jah Wobble's Invaders Of The Heart
2/5
I grew up in the late 90s/early 00s era, so I still got a peak of the whole "90s one world" vibe that permeated education, graphic design, music, and the overall mentality. I still look back on this era with nostalgia.
However, not even my nostalgia-tinted glasses improve my opinion on this album. It is repetitive, lousy, dull, and somehow it feels as if "cultural appropriation" came out of a laboratory flask.
I do not rate it as a one-star album only because some of the basslines are actually good.
Patti Smith
4/5
Powerful record, though not as evenly balanced on song quality as I had expected.
Siouxsie And The Banshees
4/5
Pleasant surprise, great songs, and a memorable vibe through the whole album.
That Helter Skelter cover... *chef's kiss
Adele
4/5
A classic record that stands the test of time. However, I did feel like somewhere around the middle of the album, there are a couple of filler songs.
Remarkable album, solid four-and-a-half stars.
Fats Domino
3/5
Fine tunes, great attitude.
The La's
3/5
Somehow, I ended up enjoying this album more than I originally expected. The blend of 60s British pop does work great for "There She Goes" onwards on the record.
Roni Size
2/5
The beats and musicality are very good. The main problem is the duration of the album. I would have rated it as a four-star record if it had half its real duration.
Deep Purple
4/5
Such a powerhouse of an album!
"Highway Star" and "Space Truckin'" are beyond this world. The album lacks a bit of power in the second third, but it recovers "in time" (pun intended).
Call me a Bonham supremacist, but the drum solo on this album is not as enjoyable as I would have expected.
One of the best live albums I've listened to, but not a perfect album IMO.
Justice
5/5
The perfect party music album.
I had a blast listening to each and every song on this record.
LCD Soundsystem
4/5
Quite an amazing album, solid four-and-a-half record in my books. Electronic music with an indie rock sensibility, great recommendation to listen to on a Friday (sadly, I had to listen to it on a Tuesday instead).
Bob Dylan
4/5
Timeless classic, I enjoyed every song but the two "Blues" songs on this record.
I had forgotten how good Bob Dylan's guitar strumming sounds!
Ananda Shankar
3/5
The covers sound a bit too "gimmicky", but the original songs do get you in an interesting mood.
Dr. John
3/5
Ambivalent impression for me. It is an unique album, I don't remember listening to anything similar to this. But, at the same time, I did not connect that much with it.
Cat Stevens
2/5
This album was such a let-down. "Wild World" is one of my favorite songs of all time, and "Father and Son" always makes me cry, so I was eager to listen to the full album for the first time.
Let me tell you, there is a reason this album is not as acclaimed as other folk-rock records from the early 70s: it is not that good.
Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five
4/5
I did not expect to enjoy this album as much as I did.
Plain classic hip hop fun (minus the eponymous song, an all-time social consciousness classic), great samples, funny jokes, and an overall great vibe.
Aretha Franklin
3/5
A bit of a letdown. Half of the songs on this record are pretty average for a singer of Aretha's caliber.
Fela Kuti
5/5
This album is partially responsible for me being able to finish writing my master's thesis, so a five-star rating comes naturally from my end.
Personal experiences aside, afrobeat never sounded as fun and hypnotic as on this album.
Simon & Garfunkel
3/5
Sweet folk sounds, but lots of filler too.
Orange Juice
3/5
Every single music-related list is biased in any way, but the alternative British 80-90s albums one is very noticeable on this list. It gets boring about halfway through the album.
Good songs though.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
One of those artists whose reputation seems rather disproportionate when contrasting the musical critics and music consumers' views on him.
Great pop songs in a "punkish" packaging, but the overall album listening experience gets a bit exhausting after a handful of songs. Great album closer, though.
Jimi Hendrix
4/5
The historical importance of this album is beyond reproach as it houses some of Hendrix's most iconic songs and guitar moments, but it drags for too long when evaluated as an album IMO.
3/5
I genuinely enjoyed listening to this album.
The mixture of free jazz and punk drums was great, though I recognize this is not an album for everyone.
Love
1/5
One interesting proto-punk song, the rest is pretty forgettable.
Manu Chao
3/5
The soundtrack to my freshman year (I say this in both the best and worst way possible).
I think it is an excessive album that has awesome tunes. Three-star rating sounds fair to me.
Ryan Adams
3/5
I don't like nor endorse Ryan Adams as a person, but surprisingly, this is a great album.
I'm aware of the whole "separating the artist from the art" debate nowadays, but I'd just like to mention that, strictly focusing on the songs, this is a fine album.
PS: Fuck sexual abusers.
Stephen Stills
2/5
Boring album, only a couple of highlights.
I'm more of a Neil Young kind of person.
4/5
Solid alternative rock album, full of some of Muse's best concert staples, but still has a handful of filler songs that get in the way of the listening experience.
Bonus points for the record's title and album cover.
John Lee Hooker
3/5
It houses both the best and worst traits of late '80s/early '90s blues revival albums.
TV On The Radio
3/5
Enjoyable indie rock album, the vocal harmonies sounds great.
Sheryl Crow
3/5
Enjoyable album, the singles hit hard. The rest of the songs, not that much.
Public Enemy
3/5
The whole album is full of great funky samples, but only a quarter of the songs actually stand out. The rest of the album suffers from that 90s/2000s fixation with oral skits and TV zapping pieces.
Kate Bush
2/5
I am so sorry, but I did not click with this album at all. I did enjoy a handful of songs, and the donkey closer is hilarious, but I found it a bit exhausting listening to this album.
Wilco
3/5
There is a four-and-a-half-star album hidden inside this bloated record. Lots of filler songs that drag the listening experience for waaaay too long...
The Fall
3/5
Surprisingly good songs and hypnotic riffs. I must admit I was expecting some bland 90s British rock, but it is indeed a good record.
Hugh Masekela
3/5
Pleasant jazz album. Nothing too memorable about it, though.
Marvin Gaye
4/5
This album is a 35-minute-long song in the best and worst sense possible. It is a kick-ass song indeed, but it lacks the tonal diversity that I believe all five-star records require.
I'm ranking this as a four-and-a-half-star album because of its musical excellence. However, I must admit that I believe that its social relevance has a greater weight than its music when we think about this album. It is not bad per se, just felt it was something important to point out.
Eminem
3/5
My inner 13-year-old kid liked this record. My current 29-year-old, not that much.
Three stars seem like a fair rating. It is full of unnecessary skits and overflowing misogyny, but it also gave us "Stan".
Rage Against The Machine
4/5
A classic one. Its reputation certainly antecedes him, a master class on hard rock riffs, strange-sounding guitar solos, tight-as-a-machine drums, and a musicalization on Noah Chomsky's lectures.
Great album, though not a perfect one for me on a subjective note.
Raekwon
3/5
Pleasant surprise. Solid three-and-a-half stars for me.
Pere Ubu
2/5
I understand the importance of this record due to its groundbreaking sonic landscapes, song structures, and overall concept, but I found the listening experience of this album dull and uninspired.
SZA
4/5
Solid album, I enjoyed listening to this record back on its original release year, and it has aged pretty well.
Thin Lizzy
4/5
I love this kind of live albums, full of electric energy, improvements on certain iconic songs, and elevated renditions of deep cuts.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
3/5
I've never really gotten into the whole Nick Cave thing. I'm familiar with his most popular songs, but it has never struck a chord with me.
This is a fine album nonetheless, I wished his later work maintained this "spooky-rockabilly-folk" sounds instead of piano-based songs.
Earth, Wind & Fire
4/5
The fact that this group is usually treated as a "two-song artist" is a crime against music. Massively underrated, kick ass songs.
Funk was never as fun as when Water decided not to show up to rehearsal.
Yes
2/5
This is the type of progressive rock album that caused such a vehement reaction from punk.
Musical prodigies recording self-indulgent songs with no additional substance, that (majestic) chord progressions, impossible drum fills. The acoustic guitar-based songs sound good, though.
I may trigger some genre enthusiasts and even some contradictions (I love Led Zeppelin and Rush), but this album is definitely not for me.
Dusty Springfield
3/5
Great album, though a bit lopsided IMO.
Queens of the Stone Age
4/5
I have a soft spot for this band, and I do enjoy listening to this album, so a four-star rating makes me happy.
Slayer
4/5
Kickass album, though it feels a bit too monotonous in certain moments.
The drums, oh, the drums...
Einstürzende Neubauten
2/5
This was way more interesting than what other reviews suggest.
I totally understand why this is such a low-rated album, since its industrial sounds are not particularly easy to digest. However, I did enjoy it quite a bit. It sort of reminds me of what Nine Inch Nails would have sounded like in the early '90s if Trent had decided to take out the rock instruments.
However, I must admit that this album drags on for way too long. A two-star rating seems adequate for my book.
Beach House
2/5
Feels like a 49-minute-long song in the best and worst way possible. Beach House released way better albums after this one. I would not call this an essential album at all.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
4/5
Pleasant surprise, some hidden gems on this one.
Also, the guitar sound is soooooo crunchy, I love it!
Dinosaur Jr.
4/5
I was not expecting to enjoy this album as much as I did.
They had me on the shoegaze-like guitar drones and tones.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
3/5
I had a better time than I originally expected. Some hidden jams.
The Triffids
1/5
I believe this has been the most mediocre record this 1001 album generator has shown me.
Röyksopp
3/5
Mellow electronic music, an enjoyable record to use as background music.
The Go-Betweens
2/5
I swear I am not biased toward 80s and 90s indie Australian bands, but I cannot digest most of their albums.
Suicide
2/5
One of those albums whose "historical significance" is considerably higher than the actual "listenability" of the record. I get the creative part, but I've never actually enjoyed listening to most of these songs.
Boards of Canada
3/5
Perfect mellow album for listening to on a Friday afternoon.
Faust
3/5
Interesting album, hypnotic though not as frenetic as other krautrock records I had listened to before.
Sly & The Family Stone
4/5
I like to think of this record as "the hangover from the 60s". Great album.
Ice Cube
3/5
Meh album, though it gets bonus points for being a good day (I'm leaving, I know where the exit is).
Billy Bragg
3/5
Pleasant surprise, bonus points for the guitar tone throughout the whole record.
The Undertones
2/5
Meh punk album. None of the "lightning in a bottle" magic from the Teenage Kicks single.
Blur
4/5
Blur did go out of their early Britpop sound to embrace a more "90s" kind of sensibility. Solid late 90s rock album.
Pink Floyd
4/5
Must say that I had a better time listening to "The Wall" today than the last time.
I still think this is not even a top 3 Pink Floyd album (which speaks volumes about the overall quality of their 70s imperial streak), but it is still one for the history books.
The Undertones
3/5
Pretty enjoyable punk record. Just the fact that it houses "Teenage Kicks" alone gives it an extra star.
However, it continues to be an inconsistent album.
Electric Light Orchestra
4/5
The mixture of classical music and 70s Beatlesque soft rock sounds so dated on paper, but this is actually a great album.
Stereo MC's
3/5
Perfect record to listen to on a Friday afternoon.
John Martyn
3/5
This album really helped through a particularly difficult day for me, so my rating may be a bit biased.
Objectively good and interesting songs.
Oasis
5/5
The perfect Oasis record. It benefits from not housing "THE Oasis singles", but it does house an immaculate cut of hit singles and hidden gems.
Lynyrd Skynyrd
4/5
I was not expecting to enjoy this album as much as I did. This has been one of my biggest listening surprises so far on this list (504 albums so far). This is one song away from being a perfect record. The guitar tones and solos, oh, the solos.
Sparks
4/5
Criminally underrated album. Two songs apart from being a perfect album. Weirdness is an asset.
Little Richard
4/5
The historical importance of this record cannot be underestimated, and it continues to kick ass 70 years later.
Pet Shop Boys
3/5
Great pop album, though the second half lacks a bit of memorable tracks.
The Beta Band
3/5
Regular early 2000s rock album. Some tracks stand out, but the best thing about this record is that it reminded me of how good "Dry the Rain" is (and it is not even on this album).
The Lemonheads
2/5
The only reason I am not rating this as a "one-star album" is that it houses one of the greatest cover songs ever recorded. Pretty forgettable.
Talking Heads
4/5
Yet another great album by the Talking Heads. I think that its biggest sin is that, although a great album, it is the weakest link within the Heads' discography "imperial phase".
Had a great time listening to it.
Mott The Hoople
3/5
Textbook three-star record for this list. It balances pop hooks with mediocre songs, but it makes you feel good while listening to it.
Slint
2/5
Meh record, did not spark anything on me.
Donovan
2/5
Two iconic songs and eight bland ones equal a forgettable record.
Rahul Dev Burman
4/5
(Pun begins) Was this directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, or why is it OBAA (One Banger After Another)? (Pun ends)
But honestly, this was such a breath of fresh air from this list. What a pleasant surprise! Without getting too gimmicky, this list requires more albums from different countries.
Christina Aguilera
4/5
A bit longer than needed, but a great pop album nonetheless.
Bert Jansch
2/5
Nothing remarkable from my end.
