Album Summary
Logical Progression (also known as LTJ Bukem Presents Logical Progression) is a compilation album spearheaded by the English musician and label head LTJ Bukem, released in 1996. It includes tracks by Bukem and artists who recorded for his label, Good Looking Records, as well as his remixes. The compilation was a commercial success. (The New) Rolling Stone Album Guide called it "a landmark drum-and-bass album," and, along with Goldie's Timeless, "perhaps one of the two most important drum-and-bass releases of the decade.". The Independent deemed the album a "spring-heeled, summer's-coming drum'n'bass selection." AllMusic wrote that "the house influences and steady rhythms make Logical Progression perhaps the best introduction to jungle for those not used to hyper-speed breakbeats." MusicHound Rock: The Essential Album Guide noted that "Demon's Theme" is "considered a classic.".

First of all ... now we are having compilations on this list? Secondly, if this is a compilation of different artists, why do all ths songs sound the same? Thirdly ... 3 hours ... really?
Drum and bass isn't really my kind of music and this didn't change that. The repetitive beats that just keep going makes me stressed and I just want to get away from it.
Reviewing LTJ Bukem’s Logical Progression, this ambitious compilation ultimately suffers from over-extension, collapsing under its own weight as a bloated tracklist that struggles to maintain momentum across its runtime. While standout moments like the dreamy, cinematic atmosphere of "The Western," the hypnotic subbass and bubbling sonic textures of "Solutions," and the offbeat, deep-grooved experimentalism of "Miles High" and "Groove Therapy" provide genuine flashes of atmospheric brilliance and jungle-dance suspense, they are unfortunately buried amidst a sea of forgettable filler. Too many cuts—from the uninspired title track and "Horizons" to "Vocal tune" and "Mind games"—fade into monotonous, underwhelming background noise that makes the listening experience feel like a tedious endurance test rather than an immersive journey. Despite a few catchy grooves, distinctive animal soundscapes, and moments of pristine low-end production, the project's severe lack of editorial discipline drags the final score down to a disappointing 2 out of 5.
YOOOOOOO
That was one of the most awful things I've ever heard. Begins with the fucking whirldwind of trouble I had to find this danm album on internet, because spotify simply didn't provided me. Second, this is just over 2 hours of nonsense noise. Go to hell with this! How can I give negative stars in here?
Three hours!??!!
I think I listened to this album? It was tough to find, and was very verrrrry long. Drums and synths for 2.5 hours in endless loops. I felt stuck in purgatory listening to the same riff endlessly. It wasn't like... *bad*, but I didn't enjoy it either.
en un principio pareción interesante pero resulto monótono y aburrido. El sonido molestaba. Paracía casi un juego de family game
Drum an Bass - no vocals.
Ambient music for an overpriced lounge bar where waiters are more fashionable than you (and will let you know it). I'm being snarky, but this really feels a bit devoid of substance. I'm not a big fan of drum & bass to begin with, so I'm probably not the best judge. But if you sit through 2,5 hours (!) of music and end up with only a vague recollection of what you just heard, that's usually not a good sign. Nothing stands out, it just goes on and on and on with barely any variation. Most modern video games have better, less repetitive soundtracks. I didn't hate it, it actually creates a pleasant soundscape. But it's really long, and I doubt anyone would seriously listen to the whole album without doing something else at the same time. I also don't find it particularly danceable for a club. So yeah... Good background music, but nothing more. 4/10
Coming right after Amnesiac, whose organic side is probably vastly underestimated, this drum’n’bass compilation sounds so overproduced and soulless that I feel like I’m playing Wipeout throughout the entire album. To be fair, I know next to nothing about this particular corner of electronic music. My only real reference is Roni Size, who can be considerably more hardcore, so I’m almost tempted to leave it at “not for me, thanks”. On a second listen, I can pick out a few more interesting atmospheres beneath all the frantic beats, but it’s still really not my thing. It’s quite remarkable that I can give The Prodigy four stars and get absolutely nothing out of this. It just sounds painfully generic.
I don't know what this was but it had some good beats. I was really bopping around. Didn't bother to listen to the whole thing, who knows why this was on here but the YT comments were pretty positive.
Decent background noise
that was really awesome, and so nice to work to but insanely long.... i really don't know what to rate it. 3 feels too low but 4 feels too high
This was 3 hours. 3. Hours. It would’ve been torture at 1 hour. This was definitely a testimony to my dedication for this project.
I guess it has a few more good ideas than Timeless, but this album is yet another two hours of drum and bass jungle music and has confirmed that the genre is not for me. It isn’t the worst album I’ve heard by any means, I was in the zone a couple of times, but I’d enjoy this a lot more in a smaller dose. The runtime is just a killer.
Day 73 Me hear syncopated drum. Me happy. Fav track: Mind Games
I recommend listening to the continuous vocal mix on Spotify. I didn’t realize that was there until I had listened to almost the entire album.
I like this ambient style of drum and bass, but nothing stood out and being amazing. It's just all pretty nice and chill.
Well, this was interesting in concept, the three hour plus execution left a great deal to be desired, especially given the repetition. By the end of the album, I thought that if law-enforcement subjected suspect to the entire album, they would have people begging to admit their guilt if only the music would stop.
This should only be packaged in a cd rom with a screensaver preloaded.
Mm... this sort of ... progressive electronica house new age stuff is directly up my alley so I kind of almost automatically love this. Now, to be more precise, it is not my favorite within the genre. So we have an interesting sort of situation in a sense. it is automatically "on my playlist" as a band or a DJ or a musician that I will listen to. Just as an "of course." On the other hand I love this genre and have groups or DJs that I favor or less favor. I think this music is in-between somewhere. This bit is actually hard to explain, it is more a feeling that the grooves give than any feasible tangible reasoning. Anyhow, it is on my playlist from now on in general and it is certainly representative of the electronica maybe house... progressive... It is all good!
Enjoyed at first, but found it a little hard going re last two tracks. A 3 plus hour album!
wow that was the longest song ever
Might be the first skewed album on here. The whole thing wasn’t on tidal & some of the songs are muted /just not available on yt. These feel like they’re straight outta a 2000s racing ps1 game, which I perilously fuck with. With that said, a lot of this feels like background music to me. Brb, selecting my cart and modifications… I loved Horizons the most.

Not my jam, not my stuff, but I think I can appreciate it on a certain level... initial thought is to give this a 2 simply because I can't see myself returning to it... Say if an Aphex Twin album came up on here I'd probably give it a 2 as well, despite the project's undeniable impact and importance. This is all my personal taste, right? It all just kind of runs together and isn't easily differentiated.
Dance boys be like 'I'mma make a 2 hour album, but each song will be the same 30 seconds of music looped for 7 minutes'. Dance boys be like 'I'mma try this new drug, tap a few buttons on this keyboard, and call myself an artist'. Dance boys be like 'I'mma live off one top ten hit in the UK for the rest of my life and remember the good old days getting sucked off by a harpy in Manumission'. Dance boys be like 'I'mma make the music slow and say it's chill then drop a faster beat and say it's hype, then put the too together and claim to have started a revolution'. Dance boys be like 'I'mma blast this full tear with the windows down while cruising in my Nova through the centre of town, and go extra slow when I drive by the 15 year old school girls'. Dance boys be like 'I'mma pretend to be a DJ by buying a 2nd hand pair of decks from cash converters, and cross fade between this and my Ministry of Sound compilation EVEN when mum says to turn it down'. Critic boys be like 'them dance boys will come after us if we don't attempt to legitimize their tripe by sticking it on a list, so lets just pick a random compilation'. Smart boys be like 'WTF is this doing here - it's not very good, it's far too long, it's a compilation, and every song is the same'.
Ehhhh it was fine. Very mid. I like drum and bass just fine, it makes good ambient background music, but it all basically sounds the same to me and two full CDs worth is a bit much, LOL.
DNF
I don't have 3.5 hours to listen to 20 identical drum and bass tracks....
Do you want literally endless dnb sounds that transgress time and space and you leave and re-enter your house throughout the course of a whole morning? Not me. Happy birthday to me.
There are cool elements to this album and I like that it's mainly instrumental and has an ambient quality. I just find the beat a little too relentless and hectic. I think the beat is the main thing that defines this genre, which is why I'm not a huge fan of the genre.
Great rainy day fall music
This felt like the artists just discovered that drum groove and could not get enough of it. Hearing the same groove for over two hours is way too much for me
You are either into DnB or not into DnB, barely any room in between, tight ledge in between I reckon. This is good, intelligent, classic DnB. Cool that its a collection.
very surprised to see breakcore in this Would I listen again: perfect for a midnight drive Deserves to be on this list: pioneer of the genre 4.2
I do enjoy a bit of D&B
Fairly stimulating background music for my paper-grading session.
Good beats. Very nostalgic.
That’s a lot of music! 2.7
Favorite Song: Coolin’ Out Least Favorite: Vocal Tune
The Spotify playlist was released 2013 and is 3.5 hours long. Found the ‘96 release that matches the Wikipedia track list on YouTube. Two tracks missing, but those are available on Spotify. It’s not called ‘Level 1’ despite the picture above.
Hypnotic and alluring, but you really do have to be quite high or have a need to fall into some sort of experimental techno trance to enjoy this properly. Maybe you could slap it on while you're doing some mundane task, like scrubbing the patio or cleaning out the loft. Still compelling and very listenable.
I thought compilations weren’t aloud on the list? And what an odd album to violate that principle for. It doesn’t sound awful so I’ll spare it 1*, but there is no reason for this to be on the list.
Despite this being a compilation album, there's more consistency in terms of sound across these tracks than there is on many albums with songs all by the same artist. The first track pretty much sets the formula, fast and rhythmically intricate breakbeats, ethereal synths, heavy bass, all good and enjoyable. But then you get to the next track and its basically the same thing, and then the same thing for the next track and the one after. This genre, while enjoyable in small doses, isn't really suited to a 3 hour compilation.
This is a 2-star album for me not because I think it’s bad exactly, but rather because I just don’t ‘get’ it. I can’t tell why one track/album in this sort of genre is critically lauded and another is not; it’s all much of a muchness to me. Perhaps if I really dove into the world of electronic music I could develop more of an appreciation for it, but life’s too short. If you really enjoy this stuff that’s great, but at the end of this album’s two-hour runtime I’m just left feeling really bored and also rather perplexed.
Pretty good electronica.
This wouldn’t be too bad if the tracks weren’t all so stupidly long
One long Metroid theme.
Not really bad per se. Just way too long for what it offers.
This Atmospheric Drum & Bass feels like being trapped on a futuristic conveyor belt that never reaches its destination. Fast breakbeats keep rattling underneath layers of soft, spacey synths and deep bass, creating an initially interesting electronic landscape, but the basic motion hardly ever stops or changes enough for me to care. Tracks blend into one another until the whole thing feels like one enormously long piece of background music. What some listeners experience as hypnotic and atmospheric instead becomes monotonous for me. After a while, I stop listening to the individual rhythms and simply become aware of how much time is left. The futuristic atmosphere is there, but rather than transporting me somewhere exciting, it feels like being stuck inside the same machine for hours.
Cook electronic music. Somehow chill and still hype at same time
I just know this is gonna be dull based on the album art. And I was right! It's not bad, but it is pretty rote. Not so subdued as to be hotel bar music, not so intense as to really get you moving, it's just kind of there. It's not bad, and I do like some dnb, but two hours of this stuff just gets old - as has the sound itself. Time has passed it by. And it's a comp. Eh.
Music to CS surf to and that’s totally fine but nothing to rave about (pun intended)
I love DnB stuff like this, and listen to it all the time during work, but I won’t pretend it’s anything revolutionary. It’s still just beep boop music for 3 hours.
Bonkibonkhakhak, Eric-muziek dus.
Jazzy electronic music.
…this feels like a very random album to appear on this list? I am very confused. I even went to the corrected links posted in the reviews and it was better than the incorrect Spotify link but still didn’t feel especially exceptional or special in any way to me.
- The album with this name on Spotify is not the same album featured in the book or on Wikipedia. Most of it is in fact on Spotify under different names and on different albums. It's an utter mess. I actually had to build a playlist just for this. - It's a compilation, not the work of one artist. Some of these tracks LTJ Bukem merely produced and others he just happened to be the manager of the label that released them. Dimery and co have absolutely taken a stab in the dark to include something they know nothing about and bent all their own rules in doing so. - It's over 2 hours long. It feels like every minute of it. - It's also repetitive, lacks variety and is completely uninteresting for all of those 2 hours. How do you run the drum track for that long without any discernible bassline and not get totally bored of it? - A Logical Progression to a 1-star rating and never darken my doors again.
A compilation album made the list?

Somehow I knew this would be weird instrumental music. I’m getting good at predicting genre from the cover art. Good background music as I was writing a document, but would never listen to this just to listen to it. Plus the last two songs are each 1 hour long. Pass.
12 songs = 3HR 27 MINS. Fuck off
Meh
What I've come to think of as a "1001 albums special" unremarkable, overlong, 1990s British electronic music. The fact that I'm only ~130 albums into this and it feels like I've already heard half-a-dozen of these albums makes me worried for how much more is lurking in the list. It may be influential, even foundational in its genre, but it is relentlessly dull and unmemorable. It does nothing to offend my musical sensibilities, but just as little to endear. I will forget about this album by tomorrow.
new album to work to discovered
An interesting album, perfect to groove to while I worked.
King of liquid dnb/jungle. Put this on cleaned my house top to bottom, 2 hours flew by. Not sure if it's a "greatest of all time" pick, by virtue it's just a compilation/mix by ltj bukem. Half the songs aren't produced by him. And if you were to include mixes there's probably more intersting picks. Fabio and Groove rider drum and bass arena for example.
Oh gawd
You would think that a ridiculously sped up breakbeat would make for a stressful and hectic listening experience, but surprisingly it is the complete opposite. The ridiculous speed transforms the beat into a abstractiom thatt's flowing, meandering, breathing. Incredible arrangements too: While the beat sits right in the middle as the backbone of the compositions, the lower frequencies are occupied by bouncy, bubbly sub bass lines, while the upper frequencies serve ample room for some ethereal and jazzy synth pads.
This was just so boring and repetitive. . . and long. Nothing else I can really say about it.
Music - Instrumental Peshay Rework
Not really an album
Silly sounds. N
6/10
It's good but I don't see it as groundbreaking. Half way through it even got a bit mundane for me
Some of this is giving very YOU WOULDN'T STEAL A CAR. Some of it gives Oblivion queue at Alton Towers. Bit of a nightmare to listen to, proper version ain't on Spotify and YouTube won't let you listen to the original 2 CD version without having some songs copyrighted (god YouTube is the worst). So I had to listen to it whilst doing my spreadsheets and writing my python code, and it really was lo-fi beats to chill/relax to!
It's not too different to putting on a generic dnb youtube playlist but it's good enough for me to consider just putting this on instead. It's 2 hours of well produced yet inherently repetitive music, thankfully I like it.
I got 3 tracks into this and gave up. Judging by the rest of the comments, I made a good decision. Generic, repetitive, crap
Fantastic
It's been said elsewhere, but it's worth mentioning again - the album on streaming services is not the correct one. It's not even close. Check the YouTube links below to listen to this outstanding release that defined 'intelligent' D&B - music that's as comfortable in your headphones as it is the dancefloor. CD1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZK_0dgj43s CD2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYqDVqYSTxs
A pointless, tedious, stupid album masquerading as art, cerebral depth & creative musical composition.
albums in this book fall into three types 1. well established canon 2. deep ish cuts 3. genuine exploration into genres that have been pushed aside because of rock dominance. this falls into 3 and people on this site really are only interested in 1 and sometimes 2. a shame
This is very much my thing. Beautiful pads and those rolling drums. Great atmosphere throughout.
I liked this
On some level you have to hand it to drum-and-bass artists, it's kind of admirable that they've managed to build a whole scene with only one beat between them.
That was like listening to Mario Kart, but in the best way. Love that D&B sound. I could have stuff like this playing at all times and I'd be happy Favorite Songs: Vocal Tune, Rings Around Saturn
Mega als Hintergrundgezuckel beim Arbeiten. Aber wer will denn solange arbeiten??
Grundsätzlich netter Sound, aber VIEL. ZU. LANG.
Toiugh to find as it's not really on Spotify. But I found some created playlsits for it. I really loved it. DNB can be boring but this hit the mark for me.
Name your favourite track and explain how it is different from the others. Go on, I dare you.
One of the comments calls this out, but the album this links to on Apple music is a 12 song 3.5 hour slog and apparently doesn't contain a single track that was on the original release referenced here. So like what's the point?
the spotify version and the original release are completey different!
