This was my first REM album. And for a long time, my favorite. Had it on cassette, of course. Got it from the BMG music group (11 for the price of 1! Plus shipping of course).
- takes me back to living in Frankfurt, 2001
- Remember it sounding like the Kid A outtakes, which it more/less was
- Worst aspect is that it is compared to other fantastic Radiohead albums
One of my favorite albums to hear in a bar.
One day a country album might get more than 2 stars from me. Not today.
A Wednesday fan!
I like this record. Reminds of Bowie’s voice, and he seems like he’d be fun to drink pints with.
Incredibly talented guy. I love that he came to Dayton after the mass shooting downtown.
This isn’t an album I would keep listening to.
I dig some of these tunes, but some don’t hold up for me. And I am sick of hearing about NYC neighborhoods getting name checked
- This is the album during which I try to arrive at the Beatles marathon. The dawn of era that I appreciate from them. I don’t love the album; but In My Life is on a different level.
“And that was the last and only time I listen to that album. More like The No.”
Heart of Glass is an all time track.
I’m sure my dad has this on vinyl. Reminds me of home. And for some reason I have a soft spot for westerns and Texas music.
I love this absolute classic. One of my 3 favorite Bowie records.
Another classic. One of my favorite albums from the 80s, and favorite from The Cure.
Close to a 4 for me. A few tracks sunk that. Wildly creative.
-reminds me of a stones record
-has the song where the guitar hook was lifted as a sample!
I think Coltrane is talented, and I still experience no joy in listening to this madness. Maybe one day.
First cassette I ever bought!!
A Forest is one of my favorite Cure songs. Not really into the rest of the record.
All timer. I know this album word for word.
Rush has some songs I like but this album bores me
Too big and bloated but still full of great tunes
Yay! This was one of the many albums that I loved in high school.
Didn’t like “Valerie” or “The Finer Things”, his hits from his most popular solo album. I like this even less.
riff after riff. Often imitated, never duplicated.
riff after riff. Often imitated, never duplicated.
They got criticized for lifting a riff from Wire, but this album rocks. Gem from the 90s.
Honestly liked it more than I thought I would
I liked Common better when he wasn’t pushing AI. The Light is a standout track for me.
Classic that changed the world.
Never got into this band but they’re held in high acclaim. I like Ready to Start.
Solid debut. But I never got into an entire FF album.
Saw them on this tour at the LC. Feel lucky to have been able to do that.
If it has more than 2 classics it would be a 3
I always think of Out R Inn when I hear this album. And how I wrote something like, 2000 BIATCH on the bathroom wall and it stayed there for like 20 years
Liked this on first listen! Another 💿 added thanks to this project.
Passing me by is a classic, but the record does not hold up. Yikes.
Rating this 💿? It’s so easy.
Favorite Beck album, and my favorite sad album. Probably a top 20 all timer for me. Really connected with me.
Don’t like the entire album, but I appreciate Common’s vibe.
2 iconic tracks, not much else.
Pixies (and Kim Deal) ended up being a massive force in the modern music era.
One of my least favorite Radiohead albums. Still like plenty of songs I like… but way down there on my list of RH albums. So I almost never pick it as a listen.
10 mile stereo is a stand out track for me here.
3 just bc Dancing Queen is one of the greatest pop songs
This project has taught me this: Brazilian samba/jazz is a thing I dig.
Huge Led Zep phase when I was around 12-14 years old. Got the greatest hits box set (cassettes) one Christmas… probably 1990? ‘91 latest. This was my favorite album of theirs for a while.
Like this one! Plenty of disco vibe, feels like they are figuring it out. Almost a 4
BD & Stuck in a moment are good. The rest disappointed me and signaled the end of me liking U2’s albums from there on out.
First NCBS album I’ve listened to. Not my thing but he’s well thought of. He’s def got his own sound.
I should have listened to more Run DMC as a kid
EDM! I should have listened to more Orbital. Still sounds fresh, even with sp many synths.
Best album in the career of arguably the best band of the 80s. Seeing them reunite in 2007 will be a top-10 concert highlight of my life.
Had not heard of this band, other than Summertime Blues.
Favorite Nirvana album, recorded famously and quickly in Minnesota by Steve Albini (RIP). There’s a grip it & rip it feel to some of the songs here, but All Apologies & Pennyroyal Tea showed they could also produce sweet melodies if they wanted. Kurt was gifted.
A great Radiohead album, and yet probably my 5th or 6th favorite Radiohead album.
Boom! One of my most listened to rap albums. Great companion to Nation of Millions.
Super famous and on a bunch of top 50 albums lists. I like a few songs on it.
A top 3 Bowie album for me. Very influential on some of my favorite artists, and a 💿 that still stands up 45 years later
I like this one more than I expected.
Surprised I have never heard of them. Strong 3. Weird but interesting even on first listen.
Major 90s record right here.
Oops. Rating and comments for Pet Shop Boys was meant for this album. Life is a mystery!
Classic late 80s album. Unique sound and fun tracks.
Mix of everything Radioheadish they’d made so far. Somehow overlooked in their catalogue but still masterful IMO
The American Beatles?! No way. Yuck.
She’s an icon and an American treasure. I hope I never have to hear this album again.
Zooms to the top 3 favorite TH 💿s...
Hungry Like The Wolf - Going to try this one at karaoke one day
Not a great 💿. There’s a reason you only know 1 track from DU.
I picked up this cassette the same day as Ten by PJ. Was at the moment alt/grunge started to take over my musical world.
Liked it more than expected. Almost a 4.
Liked this more than expected on my first listen. That’s right, my first listen was 2024. I had convinced myself I didn’t really like them.
This is a candidate for Nate’s all-time top 10. Easily top 25.
I missed out on lots of enjoying Sonic Youth when I was more youthy.
Impressed. Not really my thing but this is a good album. Varied, interesting, compelling.
His songwriting is not for me, but I marvel at his talent
I looked up the album to see if it was a greatest hits, and the notes here literally said I’d be forgiven for thinking it was a greatest hits album. So, I am forgiven!
Not as good as Badmotorfinger…
Need to listen to this one more often
Diverse, big rock record. Don’t love every song but the great ones carry it far for me.
Highest rated album is never heard on this list. Awesome!
Disappointed to hear Hard to Handle was a cover. But I liked this when it came out.
Taught myself a lot of these songs when I got my guitar.
Kanye is nuts, but I remember enjoying this 💿 in 2010. Upon relisten… it holds up really well. Surprised.
Produced by a future Oscar-winning Soundtrack dude!
Good but overshadowed by their next 2 records
Listened to more than I expected of this one. I dig the first few tracks.
Had not listened to this one. I think this would have been pretty fantastic in 1982. Much holds up, even as I like their later releases more.
My first Metallica exposure was “One”.
2 decent tracks but not my thing
Just because there are nice grooves doesn’t mean that it’s that much more listenable. Songwriting matters.
I have explored this 💿 multiple times. I think VU is a band I’ll make a playlist of. Greatest Hits… I can probably do that. There are some that are trippy and interesting here. Some just don’t land for me yet.
Seems like I’m not into dreamy psych 60s pop that’s not Beatles
One of the better funk pop albums?
Favorite 💿 of my teenage years. Still holds up for me. Changed my life.
Hit after hit. Often complex, and sometimes so simple.
A chilling and unforgettable goodbye. Still how I first think of their live performance, which is a weird reality. I never saw them live in person and must have listened to this record 100 times.
A masterpiece of bleeps written by someone 14-21 years old at the time. Maybe it’s appropriate that this album has no expiration date for me. Ageless melodies and rhythms.
This is a high three, but it’s just not 4 quality for me
3 killer tracks plus average supporting tunes.
Changed my life. Felt like a dangerous, unique and challenging album in my late teens. Holds up very well 31 years later. Feels different now than it did when I was 17/18, but that’s a good thing. Nearly perfect, certainly a top 3 favorite record of my life (so far).
We played this one a BUNCH at Camelot Records in 1995-96. It was my senior year and of the music we were allowed to play in-store, that record was among our favorite. Customers and our Manager… not so much.
Poignant album about race, wealth inequality and the struggles of life that is just as sharp nearly 40 years later.
Fast Car hits me every time. One of the best songs ever written?
Whoa, nice discovery here. Really liked this one on first listen. Doesn’t hurt that I know Trent Reznor admired Siouxsie, and NIN’s first tour was supporting them. But I had never heard this album and really dig it.
Strong 3, but still feels a bit like
A Daft Punk rip off
Wow, definitely like this one. I liked their previous 2… unsure why this one didn’t resonate at the time. I think I simply was entering my classic rock phase.
Costello holds high stature in many circles, and many artists and friends whose opinions I respect love him. Not for me.
Had never heard of these guys.
Don’t love all these tracks, but the ones I do like are so great it pushes this album beyond a 3.
Interesting record. They made up a language of babbling for this. There are some gorgeous tracks, but I never connected with this album in a way that made me want to listen to it again.
I mean, they’re no Nirvana…
Surprisingly I liked this. Reminded me of JSBX at times.
Top 10 British album of the 90s for me
Never had a Wu-Tang phase, but always thought I’d like them. They are the Arrested Development of my 90s rap-ertoire.
I wish Wallflowers hadn’t been my first exposure to “Heroes”. I enjoy the entire Berlin Trilogy. Almost a 5 for me.
Started ok and then really annoyed me. Lucky to get 2.
I got into DM right after this album, have a couple other 💿 s from them that I like more, but this still holds up well for me.
First half of this 💿 is a soundtrack to my teens. Holds up well, still.
Bette than my average 3, but not 4-level
Spooky. Released 2 days before his death. He knew.
Almost a 5 for me. Stands the test of time
Not my favorite of theirs
Highway Star, Smoke & Space Truckin’ are the kind of songs that put Classic in Classic Rock
Game changer 💿 for me. First 7 tracks are all no skips. Nothing in my library sounded like this at the time, and it was also when I started listening to The Cure and Jane’s Addiction. Alternative before it meant grunge.
Not a big fan of the content. Catchy tunes.
Another 💎 of classic rock.
Sparks are a fun band. I am a fan of around 15 songs in their catalogue. TTABEFTBOU is the pick from this 💿 for me
Liked more on this one than expected. Souvenir stood out. This record came across as goth at times. Georgia shows Kraftwerk influence.
I love early Def Leppard. Rock Rock, Rock of Ages, Pyromania… whole album really takes me back
I am choosing to not penalize Billy for releasing a bloated double album instead of an excellent follow up to his masterpiece. I made a 15-song version of this 💿 that I still prefer. Jellybelly, Muzzle, Here Is No Why, Love, Porcelina, Ruby, Where Boys, Bodies, 33, 1979, Tales, beautiful, Lily… kinda insane when you think of the run he was on at this time.
Lots of guest artists; he’s clearly a legend. Gets derivative, because it’s the blues. But still relatively diverse in song styles.
Wouldn’t listen to this album in its own but I think BR is such an epic piece of music that it carries the album up to a 3.
Zoo Station, The Fly, Even Better than the Real Thing, One, Acrobat, Both “World” songs… This album was a wild reinvention and I loved it.
Rhythm Nation was lifted from G Clinton, but that was my favorite track. Many tracks sound dated now.
Welp this was a weird surprise. Had never heard of this Ohio-born artist. Oddball songs even now, cannot imagine how this landed in 1968. Liked it too much to leave it on a 3.
I like his rap style but it gets a bit tired
A worse version of better pop. Probably sampled a lot by newer artists.
Wide ranging, reminds me of Pat Benatar. Running up that Hill. I bet this influenced many artists, including Madonna, Robyn.
Couldn’t get through any of these songs. More like The “Nuh”, amirite?
Not a perfect album, but the first 3 songs, plus a couple palate cleansers, and then one of the best rock songs ever (3 Days) shoots this to a 5 for me.
Born on the Bayou caused me to check where they are from (NoCal). And while they still made catchy, bluesy rock… Doesn’t hit the same.
I love Kraftwerk, and this album is their strongest IMO. I got my kids singing some of these songs when they were like 6-7.
I like Björk. She is super unique and I really dig two of her albums. And then there are all the rest, like 6 more, which are fine… but I probably could take my favorite 10 off those and make one more record I really like.
Never had a PJ phase, but I think I like her other albums more
Not in my top 5 Seattle grunge bands, but I respect that they were in the mix early.
I’ll ignore Maxwell’s Silver Hammer. My favorite Beatles Album, with classics (Come Together, Here Comes the Sun) mixed in with a psychedelic rock trip of continuous music on the second half of the record that feels like one 15 minute track.
There she goes is a classic
Liked this one. Weird tunes, but if I enjoyed the first listen I imagine many of these would grow on me.
Carpenters are nostalgic for me; my parents loved them. And Karen has an amazing voice.
