Album Summary

Gold is the second studio album by Ryan Adams, released September 25, 2001 on Lost Highway Records. The album remains Adams' best-selling album, certifying Gold in the UK and going on to sell 364,000 copies in the U.S. and 812,000 worldwide. Adams noted that "with Gold, I was trying to prove something to myself. I wanted to invent a modern classic."Adams intended for the album to be a double album, but his record label, Lost Highway, condensed the album into a single disc. According to Adams, the label "took the last five songs, made it a bonus disc and put it on the first hundred and fifty thousand copies. Fucking my fans over and making them pay extra for a record I wanted to be a double album. They counted that as one record." This bonus disc is known as Side Four; the disc's title reflects the fact that the bonus material makes up the fourth side of the double LP edition of the album. The album includes "When the Stars Go Blue", which has been covered by artists such as The Corrs and Bono, Tyler Hilton, Bethany Joy Galeotti, Tim McGraw and as a duo by Kurt Nilsen featuring Venke Knutson. "New York, New York" became a notable MTV and VH1 favorite following the September 11 attacks. "The Rescue Blues" was featured in the end credits of the 2001 film Behind Enemy Lines. Adams' friend and former roommate Adam Duritz (lead singer of Counting Crows) lends background vocals to several tracks. Adams received three Grammy Award nominations in 2002: Best Rock Album, Best Male Rock Vocal Performance for "New York, New York", and Best Male Country Vocal Performance for "Lovesick Blues", a song recorded for the Hank Williams tribute album, "Timeless". Stephen King's 2006 book Lisey's Story includes part of the lyrics to "When the Stars Go Blue". Also, the song "The Rescue Blues" was featured in an episode of Scrubs. In 2011, "Answering Bell" was featured in the film and on the soundtrack to Bridesmaids.

The songs are well-crafted and well-produced, but there's something missing. Could it be that it's too polished?

I wanted to like this more than I did. Solid craft, no question. Just not my thing. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - New York, New York - La Cienega Just Smiled - When the Stars Go Blue

This went on far too long and some of the songwriting kind of sucked. It’s a 2.5 star for me and I’m rounding down

It was fine but not memorable in any way.

Nisam znala šta znači alternative country. Nešto vrlo dosadno očito.

This album is... Good? Yeah, good. I don't know how much this kind of music is, like, my kind of music. But I did enjoy it for what it was. The guy is clearly a talented songwriter and musician (albeit going by his Wikipedia page, a mess personally), I just don't know if it's really for me, I guess.

New York, New York La Cienega Just Smiled

This was just another random boring album that I wish I had never listened to

Nothing jumped out at me, but was fine

A bit of a drag. Here me thinking it was Bryan Adams.

Saccharin bs

Automatic star deductions for wrong'uns. I'm not someone who separates the art from the wife-beating artist. Such a sensitive man as well, according to the lyrics on Gold! And the music is sub-Stones - 70s Stones at that - the worst sort of Stones. This would have been a one-star album even if the artist wasn't an insufferable prick. Plodding and way too long! That's a NO from me then...

This was a Firecracker!

Boring plus a goddam harmonica

This album is so varied I love it

This sure was just okay even if I wanted to love it

Bryan Adams? As in Summer of 69? Great! Oh... Well.

I was going to ask the questions of did Ryan Adams launch into stardom just through his 'lucky' timing of the album release being shortly after 9/11? At least the upside down flag cover image was sorted and would guarantee sales. But no, Ryan Adams would probably be hurt at those accusations and I have nothing against him personally. So no. That's my review. No.

There is some good songwriting on display throughout, with varied Americana genres. One can see influences from the likes of Dylan, Springsteen and Neil Young. Adams is clearly talented. The album as whole is a bit sprawling, but I appreciate Adam’s willingness to explore different styles of music, which makes its length more tolerable. At its low points, the songs sounded generic at other times overindulgent. Overall, though, this is a solid record. I know little about why Adams was canceled, so I’m just going to rate the music. My country is currently being run by a group of people who are worse by orders of magnitude. Not that these unfortunate circumstances excuse bad behavior of others, I just don’t have the capacity for more negative energy. right now.

It's not too terrible.

How have I never heard of this mans before?! This makes me want to take my shoes off by a lake and sit in an Adirondack chair sipping an ice cold beer to enjoy the sunset. Goddamn

so odd that this guy didn't sustain his music well. According to the wikipedias he is not well-liked. The music actually did get super pleasant but his very-dated look was off-putting.

It was fine. I wasn’t bothered by it, he’s got some fun ones. Maybe I just didn’t pay close enough attention but nothing stood out at all. That being said I would consider coming back to it to find the gems bc I think there probably are some. I just didn’t find them this time around

It was fine. After reading the Wikipedia synopsis, I was worried it was just gonna be hillbilly country, but it actually was more like alt country pop Ish. The first couple songs were fine, but I just got kind of bored.

So bored and I don’t Care.

Lots to like here, but even more to not care about

More like pyrite, am I right? Seriously, fuck Ryan Adams’ absurd and boring-ass faux sensitivity, fuck this album’s ridiculous length, and fuck the entire fucking pop country genre in its stupid fucking MAGA face.

I never listened to Ryan Adams much, just knew he married Mandy Moore and was better than Bryan Adams and he was from North Carolina!!! Also, he was a piece of crap towards women. This album has some good songs that were probably on One Tree Hill and maybe made more sense at the turn of the century. This album went on way, way, way too long and I think was supposed to be longer. Bad idea.

Fuck this guy and fuck you if you like this.

This is so difficult to sit through. Truly awful. How does anyone listen to this?

There were a few decent spots, but mostly I'm glad this one's over. Favorite track: "Nobody Girl"

not bad, light rock

The worst thing to happen to Americans in September 2001

This was a very pleasant suprise. Ryan Adams isn’t very well known in my country, The Netherlands. In my eyes, he was an interchangable singer songwriter, who seemed to spawn from everywhere in the beginning of this century. I dreaded the fact that this was a double album. Much to my surprise, the album was killer. Ryan Adams is versatile, didn’t bore me one second. 4/5 would listen again

Wasn’t a fan the first time I heard this. Still not a fan the second time round

Hotel lobby music

Not terrible, but only a couple of songs stood out for me.

What is this curious George bruce Springsteen knock-off. Ok not as bad as I thought. Like sure. Precursor to millennial optimism. Girl who is going to be okay. Sure. Oh god. Way too honky tonk for me ngl. Ok I was a little harsh I can appreciate this. I actually am rocking with most of this ngl. It's just so fuckin long holy shit. This is kinda emo as hell. Holy shit dude goodnight. Go away. Enjoyable but ultimately boring and unremarkable hipster millennial emo music. Favourite: Nobody Girl Least favourite: Sylvia Plath

2 of my last 4 albums have been Ryan Adams. I did not enjoy them. This album is very long and very generic. It's not bad, but as an album it's a bit of a chore.

Schmaltzy - in cover, sound, and verse. I can only surmise that John Mayer appears on the album list, if Gold qualifies.

Time to play 'separate the artist from the art'. Unfortunately in this case the art is pretty mediocre, regardless of your opinion of Mr Adams as a human being...

The video for New York, New York starts with a screen saying "This video was shot on Friday September 7th, 2001"

Dr. Blandy Bland of Blandsville. It's not bad, it's just bland.

#250 When I see Ryan Adams come up, I have to separate the art from the artist now, similar to how we do with other artists who have been exposed as crappy people. This album like many of his albums, at least through the 2000's draw you in. The songwriting is there, and he clearly can write a song. On this album he wrote a bunch of songs I love. I used to get into all his albums in the fall time as leaves were changing and I'd call it Ryan Adams Season as I went through his songs. Anyway, back to the album, there's hardly a track to dislike, a lot of his influences are on display here. Biggest Hit - When The Stars Go Blue Biggest Miss (if I had to choose) - Enemy Fire Not So Hidden Gem - La Cienega Just Smiled

Takes me back to a simpler time in middle America, despite having songs about the coasts composed by a problematic dude who seems to have lived a high-stress life.

A 3.5 to be exact, i really enjoyed the more country style.

Halfway decent! Honestly better than most of the crap that is on this list. Haha! He has a great voice and it's pretty good but its definitely missing some "it" factor which is why he probably never blew up all the way. I wasn't mad about it though.

RyanAdamsNotBryanAdams is not for me. (BryanAdamsNotRyanAdams is also not for me) Foul play, this guy invoking my beloved Sylvia Plath.

This is the second solo release from Ryan Adams (not Bryan Adams), who is a country/rock singer. There are several good tracks on this album, and if he would have made this a single album instead of a double album and eliminate some weaker songs it would rate four stars. The music could be from the 1970s-80s. One minor critique: his voice doesn’t suit the style on a couple of the songs here.

I did of course have a period of time where I mixed up Ryan Adams with Bryan Adams. Ryan did a cover of Wonderwall, though. And apparently, this album. And apparently, harassed Mandy Moore. Surely another 2000s solo sadboi like Daniel Bedingfield or James Blunt could take his place on this list!! Ah well, as an album it's fine. More pop than country in my view. One of the songs had the Counting Crows guy on it, which makes total sense because Ryan has a bit of a Counting Crows/Hootie and the Blowfish vibe. (Heck, those bands could take his place on this list too!) I've been on La Cienega. I didn't realise it had a face. Highlights: 'New York, New York', RA's got a bit of a Billie Joe Armstrong hairdo on this album cover (which reminds me, Green Day could also take his place on the list)

Fraquinho

Given the date and album cover this was not the sound I was expecting, but I love it! Very 70s folk sound

Mas o menos

No strong feelings on this one

Inte helt illa i sig men det är alldeles för mycket av det.

Långt! Men för det mesta fint va.

I would excuse the double album length if the guy hadn't turned out to be a bit of a creepy prick, but alas. Overall there's some rather excellent blues-y, Americana tracks on this thing. Guy's a great singer and the production is excellent.

A great record, probably his best. And it’s got Kamasi Whashington on sax.

Was going to go 4, but it's a bit too long. 3.5/5

I loved it some songs reminded me to the boss.

Kind generic, boring, and lame. But well made.

This is emo country/rock. The best review I saw about it was "Temu Bruce Springsteen." Will not be listening again.

Dude wants to be Bob Dylan so bad and it really shows. From what I’ve heard about this guy, exclusively with the reviews of the site, he’s apparently a massive douche canoe and allegedly engaged in a bit of noncery. So that’s not great. I’ve never heard of him before so it’s a little easier to separate the art from the artist, as opposed to someone like Kanye, who I just can’t even listen to anymore in general. They categorize this as Country first and Rock second, but it just sounds like more of the same generic indie rock I’ve been listening to all project long, and will very likely get more of soon. His voice is alright. I like it more than I dislike it. The guitar playing is just alright as well. The most intriguing part of the album is the circumstances behind “New York, New York” being made, but that has nothing to do with the actual album itself. He filmed the music video for that a few days before 9/11, which is interesting, but not the most surprising considering just how massively popular New York is as a state. But the lyrics “I’ll always love you New York” come off as a little haunting now to be honest. He couldn’t have known what would happen, but it’s just such a weird happenstance. Anyway, there’s some more kazoo playing, and I’m slowly realizing that the kazoo is used in more albums than I originally realized. Now, the best thing I can say about this album is that it doesn’t sound like Country. It definitely is on the more Rock end of the spectrum. And thank God for that, because at one hour and ten minutes, I was so excited to be done with this one. Not because it’s bad. It’s fine. I want to establish that this album is perfectly fine. It’s just so boring. We’re getting to the point in this project where I’m not going to hyper analyze these albums and listen to them each 100 times each. They get a solid 2 listens each. 1 to take it in, and 1 to pick my favorite song. And if I really like them, I’m very likely to keep listening to it. This one had some things I enjoyed. Again, the singer is fine. He doesn’t bother me. But making it through the entire album is a lot to ask for. There’s even a random Gospel song thrown in there with “The Rescue Blues”. My favorite song on the album this time and luckily it wasn’t even close, was “Nobody Girl”, which sounds different from every other song on the album. When I heard it the first time I knew it would be my pick. It’s beautiful, has a great vocal and backing track, a really good guitar solo, great drums, just a really solid song that came out of nowhere and legitimately kind of blew me away. So that’s going to be the only thing I remember from this album, but I’m glad I listened to that song specifically, because I surprisingly love it a lot. This is the first of 2 Ryan Adams albums I’ll listen to for this project. Who knows how the other one will go, but I’m guessing also a 3. But for being surprisingly easy to listen to as a whole even with the ludicrous playtime, and giving me “Nobody Girl”, I’m giving this album a 3.2/5. It’s not all that bad.

This is the high point for Ryan Adams’ prodigious songwriting skills - a coherent album that is consistently of high quality and brings just the right touch of refinement to his typically shaggy, loose style

As difficult as it may be to separate the artist (who I strongly dislike for his troublesome and often misogynistic behavior) and the art, I am going try to be as objective as possible. With that out of the way, Ryan Adams and his attempt to create a new American classic is an almost successful venture. In fact, with just a little bit of an editing hand he might have succeeded with that goal, but as it stands the album is 3 or 4 tracks too long. However, Adams was successful in bringing alternative country back into the mainstream, paving the way for acts like The Avett Brothers and Neko Case to do well in the 00s. Beyond its trendsetting reputation, Gold is also beautifully produced and contains some of the finest singer/songwriter contributions of the decade. Hubris is the only thing holding it back from being truly great.

This is a joke, right? I'm halfway through the first song on the album and it is the most generic b******* music anybody could make, and this is on a list of 1,000 great albums of all time. This list is a joke, right?

Boring, but decent

I regret giving Joni Mitchell the day before this album 2 stars. This felt a lot worse. Way too long and aggressively mediocre. At points it felt like I would start enjoying it, but the feeling always faded really fast. It's below Joni Mitchell, so that would make it 1 star, but I can't in good conscience give it 1 star. A begrudging 2 stars it is

The first few songs are a bit compelling, but the album drags and later songs just feel a bit too forced.

I know Ryan Adam's has the ability to write catchy or interesting songs, but he must have saved them all for other albums. Just an hour long bore.

Nope on several counts.

Not this asshole again. I'm going to listen to Gold by Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds instead.

He’s Bob Dylan, then he’s Robert Plant (I had to check if “gonna make you love me” was a Zeppelin song), then he’s Neil Young (harder now that it’s over), then he’s a soul singer (touch, feel and lose)…and he really does do a credible version of all of them. It’s fitting how he’s famous for his covers, but his originals almost feel more like covers than the covers. I do like the album but gonna doc a few points for originality. 3.4

4.2 I don't really listen to Ryan Adams anymore. I did a bit in the mid 2000's, but not really this record, For this, yeah very solid but that sappy voice can get a bit tiresome. From what I can gather, there is great songwriting and structure and almost every song had something interesting to latch on to. Update random thoughts. im just going through some of the catalogue: Easy tiger-great album, let it rides a burner. I knew of the 1989 cover album but didnt know about Nebraska, blood on the tracks, etc at the end of this list I was going to go through the King Gizzard discography; I think Ryan Adams might deserve the same exercise.

Always assumed he was some whiny acoustic act who’s trying to hard. I was way off. I loved this album. Can’t explain why. It was just a good listen.

Apparently Ryan Adams is a bit of a shit. His music however is pretty bland, inoffensive stuff. It's fine.

Correcto

Used to enjoy the music of Ryan Adams before I knew he was a beast. You’d surely just remove all the beasts from this list, no?

It’s often said that you're supposed to separate the art from the artist, and it’s undeniably beautiful music created by a deeply reprehensible human. On a purely sonic level, the record is a polished, comfortable slice of early 2000s Americana that proudly wears its Springsteen, Young, and Dylan influences on its sleeve. Tracks like "When The Stars Go Blue" and "New York, New York" offer some catchy, nostalgic melodies, even if the album as a whole can feel bloated, generic, and far longer than it needs to be. But no matter how pleasant the acoustic guitars and harmonicas might sound, the undeniable "ick factor" always creeps in. Every time I try to settle into the folksy, lovelorn grooves, I'm reminded of the well-documented allegations of his manipulative, emotionally abusive, and predatory behavior toward women. It completely strips the sincerity out of the songwriting, turning what might have been a decent country-rock album into a hollow and uncomfortable slog.

A little long, but very varied in content. Mix of country, pop, acoustic rock that blends a lot of genres. A fun listen. 3.5 up to 4

Great songs for sure - at some times it feels derivative, but overall a pretty great record.

Just on the album cover alone it's a no for me boss. The music within is snooze worthy as well! Been a real bad week for the ol generator here But lemme google Ryan Adams news real quick......

Perfectly fine for what it is

listenable!

non-descript but great if you’re in the mood for feeling sorry for yourself

This was stellar, I'll be coming back to this in the future

Rather long album, country is not a favoured genre of mine. Persevered but won't be listening again

Completely took me by surprise. This is a damn sweet album. I would certainly not describe this as country music -- I feel like that's very misleading. Singer-songwriter meets rock, I guess? It's definitely a bit overblown, and there's a handful of songs I wouldn't race back to listen to again; but on the whole this is an incredibly pleasant listen. Great ballads, great rockin' tunes. Anyway. I guess this guy's a tool though? So any thought of a 4 here is gone. Terrible album cover, too. Will be relegated to playing in the background at family gatherings. And it will be nice.

Solid album. Every single is enjoyable. Singer songwriter style. Well crafted songs and lyrics. Probably a 4.5 for me.

Some very good tracks on this record (When the Stars Go Blue is great) and it’s a solid record . Just not great or memorable for me.

It didn't stick to me, not bad but I will not listen to it again 2/5

Hey it’s that one song! I personally think Bronze would have been a better album title.
