Elliott SmithElliot Smith tried to hard to sound like The Beatles meet Bob Dylan with Pavement opening on this album. To me, it was very mid.

This is definently an album that was innovative at the time with its use of harmonies, sounds and instrumentation. We know Brian Wilson was heavily influenced by The Beatles and the music they were putting out at the time. For me this album is good, but unlike a Beatles album, some of it seems forced. Where Beatles albums seem to flow and meld together with no "bad" songs, this album has some great masterpieces and some songs that , for one of the greatest albums of all time, seemed like Wilson was trying to hard to be innovative and different rather than natural.
Onion the classic early Beatles albums encompassing their early sound. Full of great originals and covers. All around good
First Taylor Swift album I've ever listened too and I was impressed. She obviously has great musical talent and this album is a good listen for start to finish.
Hip hop is not generally my thing but this was good. I've seen other reviews complaining about the similar sounds and beats, and while true to some extent, it is far above the 1 star ratings they give it.
A great example of early 90s indi alternative. This is a good album with a few good innovative songs on it. I'm giving this a 3 as it may not be accessible to some due to its raw nature. A personal favorite of mine tho.
Fairly typical Talking Heads album. Some good songs, some experimental stuff from Bryne. Overall good.
Good example of the garage rock sound comeback of the early 2000s. This album fits in nicely next to The White Stripes and The Strokes.
Had heard of it bit never listened to it. It was good. May have to listen again sometime.
I had always heard a lot about how good this album is but never got around to listening to it. Now that I have, I can say it lives up to the hype. Great songs, great writing, great production. It's all there.
This is a great album. It covers early rap with the signature turntable scratching as well as R&B and Soul. This caught me off guard with how good it was.
Can't go wrong with The Band
Classic REM.
Definitely the forerunner to Rush.
The singer has a unique singing style amd voice. It makes for an interesting listen
I listened to this and I'm not sure why this is on here. I'm not a big fan of rap but this just sounds like most other recent rap stuff. Nothing made this stand out to me.
Great album. Classic Creedance. This album plays like a greatest hits.
Well... I heard it. Oh. You want more of a review. Ok. This sounds like the soundtrack to a bad 80s computer game you would play on a Tandy computer mixed with whales farming.
This was pretty good. Had never heard of this group before. Overall a solid album.
This was good. I enjoyed it very much. Was impressed to learn he did all the instrumentation himself.
Classic alternative. First 4 songs are fantastic. There are a few songs that are just ok, but considering this was Dave Grohl just beginning to stretch his wings, a pretty good effort.
Great album of songs.
This band reminds me of the Lumineers trying to be the Yeah Yeah Yeahs playing songs written by David Byrne. There are moments where the music is smooth but then suddenly disjoints itself. For some this may be enjoyable but for me, no.
Honestly, read about this album before listening and was not really enthused to listen. After listening tho, it was better than I expected. Unlike the previous Bryne/Eno record i listened to that was disjointed noise, this at least had some sort of attempt to make music mixed in with the different sampling that at least flowed as a semi coherent musical idea.
This was ok. More instrumental then what I would expect from The Cure.
Great album but I'm only going with 4stars as there are a couple of tracks on here that are not up to usual Beatles standards.
A great album that had The Police riding off into the sunset. Aside from the Andy Summers track "Mother" that kinda kills the flow and vibe of the album, this is as solid an album as you could ever expect from a band at the top of their game.
This started out a bit artsy fartsy but finished stronger at the end. This is one of those albums you probably need to listen to a couple times to fully grasp.
This was decent.
I've seen a lot of reviews that love or hate this. Personally I think this is pretty good. Waits voice is so unique and couple that with some bayou jazz and this is a winner.
Fantastic album! Too bad it's so short.
A good Prince album with his eclectic style. Sign o the Times and Never Take The Place Of Your Man are classics.
This a straight forward grunge dock album that just happens to be sung by Courtney Love. A solid record for sure.
Had never heard of this group or this album, or any songs for that matter. This was a pleasant surprise that I enjoyed.
This had some great hits in it that I knew but didn't attribute to Culture Club. Everyone know Karma Chameleon but a real new is Church of the Poison Mind. Great listen from a great 80s band.
I stopped following Radiohead around the Kid A era because I was not a fan of Thom Yorke, in my opinion, whining over an electronic beat. This album a couple year down the road does nothing to convince me different. There are a couple good songs on here but there are some that to me are not my thing.
A snapshot in time from a rockabilly legend that sadly left the world too soon. Some of the songs are your standard slow formula late 50s ballads and some are formula rockabilly songs, but considering Holly only had this one album and is still considered a defining voice of the genre shows the potential he had. This album encapsulates what he was about.
Good mix of rock and jazz playing makes this a good album to pop on and groove to.
Standard Janet Jackson album.
Ok. I'm not sure why this album is ranked so high on Top (Insert number) albums of all time. This honestly reminds me of The Muppert band doing a record. The most surprising thing about this record was I found out Walk on Guilded Splinters is off this album and was later covered by Paul Weller on his phenomenal Stanley Road album. Never knew it was a cover song til today. Admitted this does seem like the type of artist that Weller might cover. Oh well. It's still 2 stars for me.
Listened to this again after not having heard it for some time. My personal preference was always for Siamese Dream, but on this resistenc I found myself more impressed with the consistency of good quality songs across both discs. Overall I was impressed with this album upon revisiting it after all these years.
Solid. Hadn't heard it before now but I can definitely see why it's considered so highly. I did t realize this album was as old as it was.
An excellent example of early 80s LA punk with a hint of new wavyness.
Had never heard the album all the way thru, but was familiar with a lote of the big songs on this like War Pigs, Iron Man and Paranoid. Very good.
This album fells like it would fit in the Bob Dylan catalog in the mid to late 70s. Enjoyable.
Typical Bowie album
Great album from a legendary artist.
Ok. I have never heard of a concept album for techno. I always thought techno was all conceptual. Who knew?
This was good. Unlike the other electronically album i had the day before, this actually had beats an music and provided a nice background soundtrack to my day as I listened.
Great surprise of an album! This fits in nicely with the UK jangle pop of the 80s such as Aztec Camera DNA Prefab Sprout. Very nice!
Great album. Knew several songs off of it but never heard the whole album together. Very glad I did.
Classic rock album. Can't go wrong with some Zep.
One of my personal favorites. Glad to see it on the list!
This album was ok. Best song on it was the first one, Movin' On Up which makes you think you've heard it before as it sounds similar to a George Michael song. There are a couple other decent songs on here though most of it veers into the electronics genre. Overall o... k...
I've never benn big on rap so am not familiar with a lot of rap artists. I had heard of Wu Tang Clan but never actually listened to any of their music. This album had me bobbing my head to the beats and some of the lyrics and references were quite entertaining.
Start the fireplace and grab a glass of wine. It's Sade time!
I read the wiki on this album and it says some of the origins of this album were originally intended to be a soundtrack and it shows. This album plays like a movie score at times with mostly instrumental numbers. It is ok.
Great album! RIP
This is a good album. Joplin's grainy voice is powerful o er a tight backing band. This album showcases the talent that was there before she met her untimely demise.
Interesting as I have never heard this group before, and I respect that this album is in a certain genre of music more about creating an aura, but it's not really for me. This is good for an ambient mood if you need it, but is mostly fuzzy instrumentals.
One of my favorite Van Halen albums
An excellent example of a Rush album. Signals is also a great record that came right after this. Probably peak Rush in my opinion.
Eh. I had a hard time getting past the singers voice.
A great collection of Christmas songs! And it was given to me ON Christmas! Coincidence? I think not. Still this is an excellent collection of xmas favorites including the Baby Please Come Home by Darlene Love which became a staple on Letterman for all those years.
Bjorks eclectic style shines thru on ths album. Though I'm not generally into her electronica style music (I like some of the Sugarcubes stuff and her early solo work) this was ok.
One of my favorite Bob Dylan albums. Tangled up in Blue is such a great song.
Classic Stones. Can't go wrong with Sympathy ForThe Devil. Probably the best Rolling Stones song of all time.
This was a nice groove to listen to. I enjoyed this. It was nice and chill but showcased the talents of the musicians involved. Very nice.
Interesting. The singer, who sings in French, has a gravelly voice similar to Tom Waits.
Not bad. Electronic music is not usually my thing. This provided a nice calm background noise for my days work. As an employee who walked in and heard it playing said, "It sounds like the music on a video game menu scree." Pretty acurate.
I like the two hits on this, but electronic is not my thing in general.
Had never listened to any Jethro Tull before. This album was an interesting mix ranging from hard rock riffs mixed with Renaissance Faire music. It sounds like it wouldn't work, but it does.
A classic.
Once in a Lifetime is by far the best song on here. The rest are ok.
These guys were definitely an inspiration to Oasis. If I didn't know better, I'd have said this WAS Oasis. If you like Oasis, you will like this. Fortunately for me, I like Oasis.
A classic example of Elvis. With hits like In the Ghetto and Suspicious Minds mixed in with other great songs like Long Black Limousine and the powerful Don't Cry Daddy, this album is great!
Definitely not as good as it's predecessor, but I respect the attempt to try and do something a bit different from Rumours. This album does achieve being different, but is a bit less cohesive. Overall not bad, but not great.
A great example of 80s new wave This Town is one of my favorite tracks along with You Can't Walk in Your Sleep (If You Can't Sleep). With the 2 singles We Got the Beat and Our Lips Are Sealed, a solid album.
I liked this, surprisingly. I don't usually do electronica, but this had me grooving.
This is the country I think of when I think of country. Generally not my genre. This is ok. There are a couple songs I can get behind like Mary Dont go Round and Our Private Life, but mostly, for me at least, meh.
This was good. If the lead singer of Violent Femmes put together a band inspired by Talking Heads, this would be it.
Great album!
The singing style of Jello Biafra I'm sure will turn many off on the Dead Kennedys. That being said this is a great album if you like punk music from the East Bay. This album has classics like "Kill the Poor", "California Uber Alles," and of course "Holiday in Cambodia." No journey down the punk rabbit hole is complete without a listen to this album.
This has terrible reviews and I'm not gonna try to justify them, but I will say I personally think that I have heard worse than this and I am currently 90 albums in. I read a review that said this is not so much music as a project. I agree with that assessment. This is a collage of sounds more so than a music album.
For me, this is the best Springsteen. I think his voice is better in it's low key folk mode than on the large scale rock albums. This album fits neatly aside early Bob Dylan and the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack.
Gives you a taste of some live James Brown.
Dolly is a country legend. I don't like much country but this was good.
This was not for me. I like jazz but this felt like every song started out smooth and nice but built into a sonic cacophony of too many instruments trying to play over each other in a clash to be the loudest. Maybe I'm missing something but listening to this with a coworker they said it sounded like everyone warming up on their instruments. For me I liken it to the sonic embodiment of a migraine.
This is great. The wiki references this as a "golden age hip hop" album and i fully agree.
Pretty much your straightforward 60s garage rock sound.
Going into this not being familiar with most of Young's work, I found this to be decent. I like the musical styling and the lyrics, but i would say that Young's voice is like Bob Dylan in that it has to be your cup of tea to really enjoy. For me, Neil Young is a great songwriter, but his voice is an acquired taste that i have not acquired at this time.
The harmonies on this are fantastic.
This was interesting. It had a 60s vibe and sound, but seemed a bit darker than a lot of the brighter stuff from the same time period. I very much enjoyed.
I have always liked this album. It had some great singles off of it, but the whole album is sharp. The crispness of the playing is fantastic.
This wasn't bad. I feel like this is what someone the other experimental bands and their noise collages aspire to be. Very listenable.
Christie Hynde's voice has always been great and the lyrics on this are amazing.
Lust For Life is a great song and perhaps the highlight of the album.
It was ok
I wouldn't classify this as heavy metal or proto metal as the wiki says. This is more sludge rock and akin to a forerunner of grunge like Soundgarden.
I never knew Papa was a Rolling Stine was such a long song.
Nirvana's response to their commercial success was to push their sound back to something closer to their original Bleach sound. Most of it works well with Cobain sounding more aggressive and grating with his vocals. Overall, a classic in my opinion though I can understand if some are turned off by the abrasive nature of the vocals.
Has the big songs and not alot else.
A very chill album with a very chill vibe. I appreciate the sound of this album as being something that was a bit remarkable at the time, but overall not a genre that I would consistently listen to. This for me is a great album to put on if I need something relaxing playing in the background.
A personal favorite of mine even before this list. The Style Council has some of my favorite Paul Weller compositions. This album has a lot of instrumentals on it with other classics such as My Ever Changing Moods, You're The Best Thing and Headstart For Happiness. This album is a good transition album in the Weller catalog as it transitions from The Jam sound to The Style Councils best album Our Favourite Shop. The album gives you a look into Weller's mind as he reimagines the sound he is trying to find by surrounding himself with new musicians. This new sound came to a refined head in the Our Favourite Shop album that follows.
Good but not great in my opinion.
This was the chill vibe my day needed.
Elliot Smith tried to hard to sound like The Beatles meet Bob Dylan with Pavement opening on this album. To me, it was very mid.
I am not a fan of country. That being said the only song off this album is found semi enjoyable was There's Don't Care Who Cries Them which sound like it came off of a Linda Ronstadt and the Nelson Riddle Orchestra album.
This album was a nice surprise. Had never heard of Joan Armatrading before. Will be adding this to my downloads. Really liked Down to Zero, Like Fire and Tall In The Saddle.
Very smooth album. I enjoyed the vibe while listening though only giving it a 3 as there were no real stand out tracks in my opinion.
Interesting album. Highlights are obviously the songs Nirvana covered in their Unplugged. These guys were probably about 10 years ahead of their time.
An absolute classic. This is one of the defining albums of the 90s.
Pixies are much like Nirvana in combining some melodic and catchy songs and lyrics with what would also slide into songs of the noise rock category. This album is a good mix of the two. Songs like Velouria and Dig For Fire mix with noise core like Rock Music. The music is rough around the edges, and purposefully so. It's easy to see why Cobain considered Pixies an influence over Nirvanas sound.
Can't go wrong with Sinatra
It was ok. Maybe I'm just not a Rolling Stones fan.
Great example of some of the janglepop albums of the 80s coming from the UK at the time.
I liked this album better than Pet Sounds which felt like The Beach Boys trying too hard to be The Beatles. This felt more like The Beach Boys evolving as The Beach Boys and not trying to emulate someone else's style.
I don't normally listen to Hip Hop or Rap but this blew me away. Great album!
Very operatic. The varying styles exhibitted on this along with the vocal harmonies make this a great listen.
If I get anything out of this musical journey, it's a new appreciation for late 80s/early 90s hip hop.
Johnny Cash is about the only country i can listen to. Unfortunately this does not have Johnny cash on it.
This was a great album that I had not heard til now. Hard to Handle I often attributed to some late 70s rock band without ever knowing it was The Black Crowes. Overall very enjoyable.
Prime MJ. Can't go wrong there!
A very nice example of 80s pop at its finest. Sweet Love is the highlight, but the other songs on the album are equally enjoyable.
This was good. Highlight was Up On Cripple Creek. The rest was fairly typical late 60s early 70s rock.
Decent debut by a titan of rock music. Much like The Beatles early albums, this has a lot of covers. In fact, it has only one original song on it. For that, only 3 stars
Aside from Wake Up, which was used by U2 to introduce their live shows, i was completely unaware of Arcade Fire. This album definetly fits in the indie rock category along with acts like Foster the People and Friendly Fires. Some of the songs took on a droning noise parade feel like Haiti. Overall ok but not really my cup of tea.
I liked Radiohead up through this albums predecessor Kid A. I found that album to be useful to put on and fall asleep to as it was mostly noise and softer tones. This continues the tradition. This album had 2 singles released which I for the life of me can't figure out why. All the songs sound like noise jazz rock. Maybe I'll put this on to help me sleep but that's about it.
This had a great vibe to it all the way thru. Connected is a classic.
This is a bit more accessible then some of the other things I have heard from Bjork. This has it's elements of dance and electronica such as on Human Behaviour and There's More to Life Than This, but it also has more like the soft harp driven Like Someone to Love, and the melodic Come to Me. Overall good.
The epitome of 60s psychedelic rock. For me though, other than the 2 big songs, the rest is eh.
Big and grandiose. I prefer The Who's Tommy And Quadrophenia over this though.
A strong album with many hits on it, but also the non hits are pretty good. Probably Springsteen's best album.
Pretty straightforward rock live album.
This album is one of those on this list that people will either love with a passion, or hate with an equal passion. There really is no in between. Read the other reviews. For me, I enjoyed it. It made me wanna drink Guiness in a pub till I couldn't see, punch a donkey, piss in the street and pass-out in a barn while walking home. Not for everyone.
This album is the perfect representation of early 90s alternative music. Another review compared this to folky Pixies. I can see that. The wiki says this inspired Oasis. I can see that too. I'd compare this to The Jayhawks as well. Overall, a decent summarization of early 90s alt music.
Again, I was never into rap music when I was younger, and this list continues to surprise me with some great rap albums. This is a fantastic album. Blown away.
This had a great groove to it. Loved it!
I agree with a lot of the other reviews here. This is pretty straight forward indie music from late 2000s, early 2010s. Not bad. Better than some indie stuff I've heard.
The atmospheric sound on some of these songs mixes well with the rockabilly quality on others. The Smiths are a band that no other band can quite sound like.
Typical Creedence
Great collection of songs from R&B/Disco legends. Good to put on and groove to.
I had heard some of Supergrass later stuff but had never heard this album. This was good and helped highlight some of their growth musically as a group
The two hit songs made this worth listening to. The rest of the album was meh.
This was good. There were a couple times where I thought this was Bruce Springsteen or Paul Simon based on the way the singer was singing. It had a good vibe and I will probably go out and get the album.
An interesting concept for a concept album but other than that, I'm not sure why someone writing a soundtrack album for no movie just to peddle around to get work as a soundtrack writer is worthy of a place on this list.
I had heard much about how great this album was before I listened to it. Sadly, it left me feeling unsatisfied. Not sure if it was the over hype or just my own person taste, but I walked away with a feeling of "that was it?"
Surprisingly good in my opinion.
Had only heard the singles off of this album and I have always enjoyed those, but the other songs on this album are equally good.
I was vaguely familiar with Nick Cave and have always love the brooding moody baritone voice he sings with. This album was more rocking and upbeat then some of the previous work I was familiar with and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
This was great! Smoothest of jazz to just sit back and relax with.
