Better than I expected but wouldn't purposefully listen to again. This would have been better without vocals. 2.4
Deserve place: No
Some great songs but could have greatly benefited from being shorter. Still will listen to the singles but probably not the full album
Decent album subtracted by harmonica
The best Pogues album, but still have a soft spot for Shane MacGowans The Snake
I knew of them at the time this came out, but never listened, though certainly would have liked then. Not my current thing, and probably wouldn't seek out again, but I can see why it is liked
I would have previously said Ooh La La was the better album but after listening to both back to back, I'll be gravitating more to this one now. Probably a 5 without Debris, but still a solid 4
Such a classic. My copy doesn't have Watching The Detectives but adding that just makes it better
More of a 3.6, but rounded it up do to the highs of songs that were great. I don't think I had listened to the whole thing previously but knew quite a few of the songs. Just a little overlong
Definitely of its time, but updates the P-funk sound and is a lot of fun
More awful that I even thought it would be. Speed Demon followed by Liberian Girl killed any potential for a higher ranking than 1
Don't see myself choosing to listen to the whole album again but there are definite songs I'd put on. Over long and would be much stronger at half the length, but King Kunta pushes it up from a 2 to 3 star.
There are a lot of shows I regret not going to but Elliot Smith is one that I was on the fence on but drove the hour and half to a sold out show and was able to get tickets from someone who had extras for $25, which was a lot for a concert at the time.
This is one of the Elliot Smith albums I tend to gravitate to, with the other being From A Basement On A Hill and an easy 5 star
This is the only Green Day album you need. This is one of the bands I was supposed to, but have never seen. They were the opening band at Lollapalooza in 1994, but the traffic on the way to West Virginia was so bad we got there late.
This album was my introduction to R.E.M. back in 1987 and every note is engrained. The whole album still holds up but that first side is as good as it gets, and I'll get back to revisiting all of my old R.E.M. albums
Couple of songs, specifically Wildflowers, Rosewood Casket, and Pain of Loving You were decent. The problem with the rest of the album is the 80's overproduction.
Decided on 4 stars because there are probably 5 or 6 better Radiohead albums, one of which isn't on this list, and I could stand to be a song or two shorter
This is one of those bands where the major label albums better than the early indie albums. Where You Been and Green Mind are their apex (both of which would likely get 5's). I like Dinosaur Jr but this is not the album I come back to. I'm not sure if I've listened to it in at least 15 years but was glad to revisit Kracked
Also, they are in close competition to Jesus and Mary Chain for the loudest band I've ever seen live
Couple of classic songs that deserve the praise but a the rest doesn't grab my attention. Owned the album for probably 30 years and listened to it a maybe a handful of times.
This was great. Surprisingly, I don't think I've listened to this one before, and I have to say a bunch are better than Oh Bondage Up Yours. Definitely will be listening to this more
It really is as bad as I always think Steely Dan sounds like. For pluses, its easy to ignore, and backlash to stuff like this gave us punk
Not really my thing but I can see the appeal. The first few songs I was thinking it would be a lot better stripped down and less pop, but then the best song is Velvet Elvis which is pretty much pop. Butterflies is the other standout, but the rest isn't my jam, and High Horse was just awful
This is a surprise rating for me - I've had this album in various formats since it came out, and expected to give it a 4 but it really is not as strong as their others - at least through Automatic. So I'm giving it a 3, but a very high 3
I was excited for something I hadn't heard of but other than something interesting bits it didn't feel like it belonged on this list
Way more diverse than I would have expected from only knowing The Message, White Lines and Adventures of..., unfortunately it wasn't for the better
Surprise, I didn't hate it, and I even knew one of the songs
I really played the crap out of this when it came out and I don't revisit it enough these days. They have always been a band where you have to listen to the whole album - I forget which one, but the CD for one of the early albums grouped songs together as one long track, so it only had 4 tracks for 12 songs.
I've tended to listen to their last 4 albums more in recent years, but need to rectify that.
This still sounds as great as it did in 93, and the band has a great 3 album run, with a B-side collection that is even better.
I went to see them on this tour with two opening bands - The Cranberries and another band who just released their first album, the Counting Crows.
KЯAP
Metal Misfits
Its been 25+ years since I've listened to the full album but still familiar. Introduced to them by U2 having them open up on the Zoo TV tour, and certainly fit - definitely didn't fit the other rap coming out at the time.
Not bad, but too long and rather just listen to Smog
This is the Gun Club album I usually come back to. After enjoying it again this morning, I revisited Miami and realized I need to give the others another chance
Great for the background. Unoffensive but nothing that jumps out as great. Own both this and the 3 EPs and probably can count on a single hand how many times I've listed to both.
Paint by number jazz
Mojo Nixon was right
Houses of the Holy is still their best album
Turns out you still remember all these songs from your manager playing it 30 years ago
Kree-Akrore should have been the first song
Yes Stop
I'm not sure why this is the first time even hearing of this, but pleasant, but unadventurous britpop. As times reminded me of the later Ride albums
Certainly dated but this was much better than I had expected it to be.
Is this as important, ground breaking, or well written as Highway 61 Revisited which I reviewed just the other day? Clearly not, but it's fun and its getting the same rating
A point for giving us the Red House Painters cover of Long Distance Runaround
1994 was the greatest year in music. There are probably 1001 albums from that year that could be on this list
This is my favorite album mentioning Parcheesi and now would probably benefit from being shorter but back then, you were getting more bang for your buck with a 22 song album. Not as great as the classic Pixies, but this is was the last great think Frank Black did. Cult of Ray disappointed and its been downhill from there.
I'll stick with the first album and EP. Nothing awful, but no real standouts, and I don't see myself coming back to this one. Shadows and Fortunes is its best moments
You couldn't escape this in 1997 - it wasn't great then and doesn't really hold up now. Outside Kool Keith's appearances, there isn't a reason to revisit
I enjoyed this one much more than A Short Album About Love, so because I gave that one a 3, this one gets a 4. There's a lot to like, but its far from perfect, and a lot of cringe lyrics. But because I'm willing to listen to this again, I will stand by the 4 I give it
Closer to 4, but not quite there. Some great songs but not an album worth, and not nearly as cohesive as the first 4 albums
First time listening to a full Sigur Ros album and it won't be my last
I saw Mudhoney once, opening for Pearl Jam the day we first heard the news about Kurt Cobain. The weeks before, I was listening to the Five Dollar EP on repeat, still along with Pieces of Cake, my favorite of theirs.
It's certainly dated but still fun.
I played this one to death when it first came out. Back when $10 was an expensive show, I spent almost twice that to see them for their first US tour supporting this album. I was supposed to fly across the country to see them a few years later until 9/11 happened. The first 3 albums and early EPs are so ingrained in me. I don't listen to them much anymore but when I do it always takes me back
I was first introduced to The Residents when I was 16 working at a record store. I don't remember what album we listened to, but I remember the person who put it on said that to really understand you need to see them live.
A fine blues album
The female version of Mark Kozelek
This came out when while I was working at a record store and at the time there were three albums that everyone who worked there would agree to. Renegade Soundwave, the first Soul Coughing, and this. This is probably the first time since then that I've listened to it, and I have to say it is nowhere near as good as the Blue Lines, which I got just a few days ago. At least Renegade Soundwave and Soul Coughing still hold up
This would take a number of listens to really sink in but these days you don't get that opportunity, and there are so many other things I'd rather listen to. Summertime Clothes and Brother Sport are great, the rest all just bled into one. Just an album that came out in the wrong time.
Closer to a 4.5 but still revolutionary.
I kind of went backwards with Ride, first learning of them when Carnival of Light came out. I couldn't understand why it was considered such a disappointment. Nowhere and Going Blank Again make it clear
You'll dance to anything
There is a 4 (or even 5) star album in here. Is it Bruce's best, no, but its still enjoyable. Just shorten it to 10 songs and you've got a winner
I recently saw a band open up for Jon Spencer - just a drums and sax. This is better than that
My dislike of anything Eric Clapton made my preconceived expectation for this album wrong. Fun, way better than I would have ever thought, and would never of listened to it otherwise.
