Blistering speed, biting power chords, and pop hooks that endure. Criticism of this album, by and large, misses the point. If you think this installment is lazy or boring, please consider these kids were stoned out of their minds when they made it.
Starlight is a good song but I couldn't sit thru all the rock opera. 🙉
A little bit too much party going on here. Great artwork, and vocal performances are wonderful. I would much rather listen to the Cure or Depeche Mode.
Bad reviews say it sucks. Good reviews say it's best enjoyed tuning out. That's all you need to know.
Recommended if you like Los Campesinos!, Dismemberment Plan, Bright Eyes... I gave it a 3 because it's a relatively unremarkable, but inoffensive bit of indie rock. It's a well-crafted set of songs, but it's about 20 minutes too long.
Important voice in indie music
RHCP are an amazing trio (Anthony Kiedis is a figment of our imagination). Californication is the only good album this band ever made
Minor Threat made Hardcore.
Ian MacKaye goes on to form Embrace, inventing Emo.
Emo activates Gerard Way to get into Music.
Gerard Way starts My Chemical Romance after witnessing 9/11.
Inspired by MCR, Stephanie Meyer writes the Twilight series.
Twilight is adapted to film.
Kristen Stewart invites Ellen to..............
It's good.
Pleasant memories of my parents. Love the hippie dippie acid rock of the 60s
Tom Waits decides to freak it---not a 5 like Rain Dogs, but worth a listen!
You can't deny the influence of this record!
Too many filler tracks to be a 5. That said, It's still a masterpiece. The inner Beatles tension is felt by some of the heavier tracks, which in some cases fell inspired by Hendrix, but that's just me. I think John outshines Paul on this album. Best Ringo track with Don't Pass Me By, and George's incredible While My Guitar Gently Weeps, whilst being unknowingly cucked by Eric Clapton.
Nothing, and I mean nothing can top the tone of a precision bass with flat wound strings.
Best White Stripes album hands down. 4/5 cuz Jack don't know how to close an album
There are like two dozen producers, songwriters and engineers on this album. Far too many for it to be this mid.
In the rear view, Springsteen and Bowie. Straight ahead, Radiohead, The Killers and Arcade Fire.
HOLY SHIT THEY COVERED VAN MORRISON? Sweet Thing is an all timer and it works!
This one is so dark. It was fun to listen to because I know more about The Cure's hits and I don't think I'd heard any of these songs since I was a kid!
Bowie is an alien god. But he's not an infallible alien god because Golden Years is his worst radio hit. It's the only blemish on an otherwise perfect album.
Chuck D is so real good lord. Most based rap album of its generation. It's an hour but not one wasted minute.
Coincidence that Back in Black was released the same year as Michelle Remembers...? I think not.
This album feels like the gayest devil you can imagine licking your ear and saying, "Welcome to the 1980s."
If you think this album is for idiots or you're sick of hearing these songs on the radio, try this: Listen for the influence from CCR, Vanilla Fudge and Neil Young. Ah that's better.
Gorgeous and vibey. Perfect listening for a quiet rainy day.
How rare to produce an album that could have been dropped any year!
1977's Marquee Moon could have been released in the 1980s as peers of Pixies, or in the 90s as peers of Pavement, or the 2000s as peers of the strokes, or the 2010s as peers of Car Seat Headrest, or the 2020s as peers of Geese.
Better than I expected but wouldn't go back to
"Fatboy slim? More like white boy retarded!" - Chris Rock
There is something un-enduring about this record.
Solid offering of the 1960s. A bit derivative of its predecessors. By 1967 the influence of the Beatles, Donovan and Simon & Garfunkel were so evident in these recordings that it's a little over wrought.
The best is yet to come though! Soon after this, David Crosby will form CSNY and Graham Parsons will have his body snatched from LAX and burned in the desert.
I'm am idiot for snoozing on this my whole life!
Devo really said "fuck it let's start the 1980s!"
RHCP are the greatest trio in rock history.
Unlike any live recording you're bound to hear. Sharper than hell. Johnny has such warmth not associated with him
You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself spend the rest of your creative capital on a 2hr13min live album.
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
DO I REMIND YOU OF TROUBLED TROUBADOUR DAVID CROSBY?
- silly Billy Ned Flanders
I would have loved this as a kid. I went through a lengthy protest and folk music phase and overlooked this one.
Signs of inspo to Iron & Wine and Fleet Foxes which gives me a little grace for how pretentious David Crosby comes across.
Murmur sounds great but there are no standout bangers. Minimalist production choices make it an anomaly for the mid 1980s, but Stipe has yet to develop his melodic chops.
The Doors being considered one of the greats is a psyop.
This album ushered in the indie sleaze era. This is the pinnacle of my formative years as i was 15 when this came out.
Meet me in the bathroom!
Six albums in a decade is very prolific. This installment feels less thoughtful than its preceding records, but very enjoyable nonetheless.
I'll never tire of that signature bass tone, slathered in chorus. Peter Hook 🐐
Wish it was more "snotty"
"Led Zeppelin didn't write tunes everybody liked. They left that to the Bee Gees." - Wayne Campbell
The edge on these tunes would have decapitated a small Victorian boy. This album is, as the kids say, TOUGH.
If we'd simply listened to CCR we might not be in a fascist hellscape today.
This should blow your mind at 20 years old, but eventually you gotta grow up.
Genuinely awesome voice but instrumentals leave some to be desired.
This tapped into some weird unexplored drunken angry Irishman side of me I didn't know existed.
Surprising that this record is from 1975 because it feels distinctly 1960s to me. How did this come out the same year as Rumours? Did Dylan return to acoustic because guitar rock was so "in" at the time?
Genre defining piece. Timeless. Detractors can suck it.
Genre defining piece. Timeless. Detractors can suck it.
There's an inverse correlation between Metallica's quality of songwriting and the quality of production.
As production increases, songwriting decreases. That's Metallica.
Anyway, this is the best album featuring Jason Newsted, stepping into the monster shoes of Cliff Burton.
"One" is an all-timer metal song, even if the rest of the songs are just decent.
That gets it a 4 in my book.
The singles are phenomenal! They remind me of growing up in my parents house.
I used to hate Ramones for being repetitive and just uninteresting compared to the hardcore stuff I was listening to as a teenager.
Repetition is fine when you've perfected the formula and set up generations of future punks for success.
How is it possible that Elvis Costello is English and David Byrne is American? I could never figure that one out.
It took me years to convince Spotify that I don't want to hear Roadrunner.
If you don't like this, Television and The Stooges did the same thing but better.
There are 4 Springsteen albums I'd reach for before Nebraska, but that's more of a statement of how important his voice is to the beleaguered American.
The Boss needed to do this record.
Hell yeah. Such tight grooves, you don't even feel it. You're too busy dancing to care.
If you're a man and you think this is too weird, then I have to assume you have never had good pussy.
Calling this album "She's So Unusual" is like working with that one woman in the office who thinks she's "alternative" because she loves Harry Potter and thinks Linkin Park is emo.
The one thing that made the Bee Gees interesting is completely absent here.
This sounds better than all the thrash albums by Metallica. If only Dave could un-morph out of a sock sniffing goblin, he'd be unstoppable.
Notably decent record. I appreciate REM's influence and songwriting. I wouldn't deny the greatness of this record, I'm just not sold on every song.
I was hoping for Anal Cunt but this will do...I guess... 🙄
This is a great snapshot of the 90s. I recommend this album to vibe with on the home speaker system, or while flirting with the too-cool-for-you girl hanging out at the record store, who might actually be a time traveler from 30 years ago. DON'T FUCK IT UP.
Not the TV on the Radio album I would advise you start with. Genuinely miss the days where a band like this could just get picked up by a record label who wanted to take the chance because I assure you the best I'd yet to come! Thank you Touch and Go records for taking the chance on these guys. I think the investment paid off.
You know what? I'm done sticking up for Dylan. His country and western contemporaries were representing this style of music far better than he was, but Dylan gets laurels about being a generational talent and poet.
Title track is the best song on this album.
If I was to educate an alien 👽 about humanity, I would show the little gray fucker this record.
Maybe they would like the glorp
POLYCULE TAKEOVER RECORD ACCUSING ME OF WEAPONIZING MY TRAUMA TO GET OUT OF DOING THY DISHES (I'm doing cocaine)
I had a huge Tom Waits phase when I was 18 or so. This is a very nostalgic album for me.
The songs range from Circus Screamers, to Funeral Dirges, to Americana-infused rock and roll.
Goin Out West and I Don't Wanna Grow Up are my favorite songs.
There was a period of 15 years where Beck just couldn't miss. I think Guero might be his best (after Sea Change).
Two words: hell yes
Top 3 Nu Metal Albums of all time OF COURSE!
Incredible how good they sound even so rough around the edges. The musicianship is astounding.
Runs about 10 minutes too long.
Somewhere between Minutemen and Dinosaur Jr is a criminally under appreciated indie band.
A must listen for any lover of classic college radio.
Nothing i can say that every 5 review hasn't already so I'll simply justify my 4.
Visions is a horrible ballad. To my ears, at least. I hate that fusion keyboard and on the nose social commentary.
One turd amongst perfection.
I've been put into Mdou Moctar and Tinariwen, and I'm really excited to be able to put Songhoy Blues on for others!
Nothing wrong with this album. But there's a reason why we talk about Erykah, Amy, and Lauryn and not Ms. Dynamite.
I don't want Ogden's nut anywhere near my face.
I haven't listened to this album in 20 years and I'm rendered to tears.
What more can be said?
I'd like to thank Marvin Gaye for spiritually creating Christopher Cross and Michael McDonald 🙏
Oracular Spectacular exists on a plane that no longer exists. It's 2007. The worst thing going for us is the war in Iraq.
Ahead of us: a financial crisis we will never fully recover from, followed by creeping and then overt fascism replacing our politics.
I can hear the hope in their voices, and feel the shadows of my own, now shattered dreams.
I'm glad she's on the list.
I like it when he glorps it
The 90s did not start with grunge. They started on 1988 with Sonic Youth and Pixies.
And if you don't believe me, that was David Bowie, not me.
Shiver for me.
I played this CD 💿 to the point of utter destruction. Shout out to Sony discman for giving little me so much joy.
Six of the 14 songs on this album are covers and we, of a certain age, owe a huge debt of gratitude to Kurt Cobain for educating us about The Vaselines, David Bowie, Meat Puppets, and of course Leadbelly.
Bonus if you watched this on TV and "the look" changed your fucking brain chemistry.
