Popular Reviews

Freak Out! by The Mothers Of Invention

Quirky. Zappa always feels more like watching a performance than listening to music. I appreciate him, but rarely listen (even to the records I own).

This is a truly excellent album that I never heard of. The first recommendation here that is, in my opinion, a direct hit. I love the songs and the performance.

Rain Dogs by Tom Waits

One of my favorite records

Bookends by Simon & Garfunkel
Feb 25 2026
Hot Buttered Soul by Isaac Hayes
Feb 27 2026

Good voice, but incredibly boring music.

Eliminator by ZZ Top
Mar 02 2026

Soms strong songs. Very consistent. I like the exploration into new wave. But also a bit simplistic, and repetitive, across the entire album. For an 11th album, some pretty strong tracks.

Born In The U.S.A. by Bruce Springsteen
Mar 03 2026

3.5. The mix is so telly and full of reverb, I woukd probably rate an acoustic version higher. Some really strong songs. But too many songs at the top of his vocal range.

Mar 04 2026

Not sure why this rap album made this list. It's fine, but not especially good. Also not really my style.

Emperor Tomato Ketchup by Stereolab
Mar 06 2026

This was a fun record. Creative, wild. Had not heard it before, but will check their other records as well.

Blackstar by David Bowie
Mar 09 2026

OK, but not really my thing. Good background band, creative.

Dusty In Memphis by Dusty Springfield
Mar 10 2026

What else do you want from a record? Have this on vinyl in the office. Solid 5

Copper Blue by Sugar
Mar 11 2026

The 90s called, they want their mediocre alternative music album back. Never heard of this, for a reason. It is.... Fine.

Screamadelica by Primal Scream
Mar 13 2026

Did not know it, but it was a pretty nice set of songs, diverse, fun to have on in the background. No killer songs on here, but the album is interesting.

Superunknown by Soundgarden
Mar 16 2026

Always thought I needed to like this record, and that I didn't. But after listening to it for the first time in years, I really enjoyed it! Even caught myself singing along. Also how are black hole sun and spoon man so casually track 7 and 8? I think this is a really great record, glad I listened to it again.

Back In Black by AC/DC
Mar 17 2026

You see jokes online about how the lead singer would have auditioned, and the rest of the band thinking 'yeah, this is a great voice for heavy metal'. There is not a lot of range beyond yelling, and the songs sounds quite the same because of it. OK, but slightly boring.

Freak Out! by The Mothers Of Invention
Mar 18 2026

Quirky. Zappa always feels more like watching a performance than listening to music. I appreciate him, but rarely listen (even to the records I own).

Picture Book by Simply Red
Mar 19 2026

found this surprisingly nice to listen to. High quality. Never really to the point that a song will become a favorite, but much beter than I thought

Bright Flight by Silver Jews
Mar 20 2026

I listened to it 3 times but it was not enough to know what I think about it. It might be music I like if it grows on me more (common with lofi indie, which is one of my favorite genres) but having it presented as 'one of 1000 records to listen to' is not the right context for an evaluation.

Mar 23 2026

This is just a party. Hearing a live record of these great songs is such a good insight into what a great performer he was.

Meat Is Murder by The Smiths
Mar 24 2026

I love the smiths, not their best, but still great.

White Ladder by David Gray
Mar 25 2026

I was pretty into this record in 1997. It is still pretty OK, the songs are solid, some good, but the production is really well done, which boosts it a point for me.

Pump by Aerosmith
Mar 26 2026

The record is strong overall. There's some songs that are absolute bangers and difficult not to sing along to. Jamie's got a gun lifts it to 5 stars for me. It was one of the first songs I remember hearing as an early teenager that made an impression.

At Folsom Prison by Johnny Cash
Mar 30 2026

Another strong live record. Of course the setting is horrible, the audience is horrible, the lyrics are horrible, but it is a really strong perfromence.

Mar 31 2026

The record is ok, I have listened to it once in a while over the last decade, but somehow I never return to it. I think the songs are just not enough my thing.

The Poet by Bobby Womack
Apr 01 2026

I listened 3 times, but I have to say no song on there was memorable. I think I will forget about this album shortly.

Nothing's Shocking by Jane's Addiction
Apr 03 2026

It's a creative rock band, with a unique sound. Not something I would put on by myself.

Pearl by Janis Joplin
Apr 06 2026

Strong record, some classic songs.

Bitches Brew by Miles Davis
Apr 07 2026

I love Miles Davis, but always found this a difficult album to get into. I got a little closer, but not there yet.

Apr 08 2026

This is a truly excellent album that I never heard of. The first recommendation here that is, in my opinion, a direct hit. I love the songs and the performance.

Apr 09 2026

From all meat/rock records, I think this is a strong one. Classic tracks, honest playing, got to respect it.

Beyond Skin by Nitin Sawhney
Apr 10 2026

This was so bad! Even in the 90s this would have annoyed me. Incomprehensible how this ended up on this list. Mediocre at best.

Apr 13 2026

I have his best of on Vinyl. He knows how to play the popstar controversy game, and is also one of the best rappers in the world. Some really strong tracks on this record.

Nilsson Schmilsson by Harry Nilsson
Apr 14 2026

I loved this. Some good songs, very (maybe just a bit too) diverse, great voice. It's not surprising to learn he was good friends with John Lennon.

Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys
Apr 15 2026

Classic, great songs. God only knows in itself deserves 5 stars

Low by David Bowie
Apr 16 2026

I guess I am just not so much of a Bowie fan. Second record, now an older one, and it is also fine but not something I would return to.

Come Find Yourself by Fun Lovin' Criminals
Apr 17 2026

I feel I liked this album more and less over the years. I have it on vinyl, play it every now and then, and liked it quite a lot on a sunny day in the garden

xx by The xx
Apr 20 2026

Great album. I have a copy on vinyl and should listen more to it. Excellent songs.

The Cars by The Cars
Apr 21 2026

Didn't know this, but a strong album.

Apr 22 2026

Several classics songs, strong record overall

No Other by Gene Clark
Apr 23 2026

The album was OK, but not too memorable.

The Stooges by The Stooges
Apr 24 2026

Strong start, later numbers are a bit average, but very enjoyable.

Boston by Boston
Apr 27 2026

Actually surprisingly good, also beyond the opening track. Songs are varied and strong.

Off The Wall by Michael Jackson
Apr 28 2026

Strong record, although maybe not his best. Some strong songs, but also very poppy.

Veckatimest by Grizzly Bear
Apr 30 2026

One great songs, some other nice tracks, but not something I would return to.

Sea Change by Beck
May 01 2026

I can't say this was very special or enjoyable for me.

Gris Gris by Dr. John
May 07 2026

Quite interesting record. I liked it.

Imagine by John Lennon
May 11 2026

I love John Lennon, and this has many of his best songs.

Hail To the Thief by Radiohead
May 12 2026

Not my favorite radio head record, but ok

Stardust by Willie Nelson
May 18 2026

Seems this was big in the 80s among country loving Americans. Good for them.

Moon Safari by Air
May 19 2026

Great record, I have it on vinyl

The Velvet Underground & Nico by The Velvet Underground
May 26 2026

The quality of the recording and performance is often just a bit too low quality, but some songs are good.

Coat Of Many Colors by Dolly Parton
May 29 2026

Actually a bit too country for me. The songs I like better are on other records.

Blue Lines by Massive Attack
Jun 02 2026

Have it on vinal, absolute classic.

Ctrl by SZA
Jun 04 2026
Shaft by Isaac Hayes
Jun 05 2026
Kenza by Khaled
Jun 10 2026
Music From Big Pink by The Band

The weight is great, rest of the album nicely weird

Disintegration by The Cure
Jun 19 2026

Really great album, strong creative songs

Elephant by The White Stripes
Jun 22 2026

A great record with several strong songs. Still good after all these years.

KIWANUKA by Michael Kiwanuka
Jun 24 2026
25 by Adele
Jun 30 2026

Opening track is strong, the rest not so much.

Meat Puppets II by Meat Puppets
Jul 01 2026

What a great record. So glad this site made me discover this. A great variety of songs, all well written.

It's Too Late to Stop Now by Van Morrison
Jul 02 2026

Great voice, too many mediocre songs, and his Covid craziness has turned me off from him, even when his songs from half a century ago where good.

Cross by Justice
Jul 03 2026

Nice strong dance record

The Stranger by Billy Joel
Jul 07 2026

One of the perfect pop records. All songs are awesome, several classics. Well performed, joy to listen to.

One of my favorite records

Yank Crime by Drive Like Jehu

Very interesting record

Frank by Amy Winehouse

Time Out by The Dave Brubeck Quartet
Jul 20 2026
Raw Power by The Stooges
Jul 21 2026

OK, but I feel without really strong hit songs

Bongo Rock by Incredible Bongo Band
Jul 24 2026

Cool record I never heard of

Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park
Jul 28 2026

Better than I thought. A bit too forced at times.

Gold by Ryan Adams
Jul 29 2026

Very run of the mill

The Band by The Band
Jul 31 2026

Excellent record

Surfer Rosa by Pixies
Aug 03 2026

Classic, although I think it will be noise for a lot of people

Palo Congo by Sabu
Aug 06 2026

Super exciting record. Great drums, wild songs, good diversity. Glad I was exposed to this.

Foxbase Alpha by Saint Etienne
Aug 07 2026

Opening track is nice, the rest a bit too bland.

War by U2
Aug 11 2026
Duck Stab/Buster & Glen by The Residents
Aug 12 2026

I guess a funny concept, but the songs are overly simplistic and are more a gimmick than artistic. The lack of depth will not make me return to it. If music is long form reading, this is poetry. But poetry that does not touch you.
