Album Summary

More Songs About Buildings and Food is the second studio album by American rock band Talking Heads, released on July 14, 1978, by Sire Records. It was the first of three albums produced by collaborator Brian Eno, and saw the band move toward a danceable style, crossing singer David Byrne's unusual delivery with new emphasis on the rhythm section composed of bassist Tina Weymouth and drummer Chris Frantz. More Songs established Talking Heads as a critical success, reaching number 29 on the US Billboard Pop Albums chart and number 21 on the UK Albums Chart. The album featured the band's first top-thirty single, a cover of Al Green's "Take Me to the River".

funny - this was a very quite follow up to there great debut album. With Brian Eno production they instantly became a polished, technically proficient band. Was not too familiar, but found it enjoyable.

Insane actually that music can sound this good and unique

Tina Weymouth you are everything to me. I love the way she plays and the basslines are usually my favorite part of the song. An iconic staple of their sound!!! Along with David Byrne's frenetic vocals and lyrics- which btw, autism be damned, that man is autistic. I definitely relate to some of the lyrics in a way that makes me feel seen lol, neurodivergent music fr. The more I listened the more I honestly really like this. <3The Good Thing, Warning Signs, Found A Job, I'm Not In Love, The Girl Wants to Be with the Girls<3 "Judy's in the bedroom, inventing situations" REAL!!!!! ++Talking Heads has a very interesting history, lot of band drama lol(mainly on david byrne's end) Fun deep dive!! +++FUN RADIOHEAD FACT they got their band name from a Talking Head's song called "Radio Head" This is a Jojo Reference!!

I'm sorry, I tried and tried and I still can't totally love Talking Heads. I like it, but I don't love it. This album has some good songs but it's just a bit too weird for me to truly love it. I can respect it, though

Not my favorite of theirs but “I’m Not in Love” is a breathtakingly vulnerable song

The third Talking Heads album so far. Same as the others, it's fine music. Doesn't move or impress me, but it exists. I'm Not in Love (alt version) stood out. 2.5/5

immaculate vibes ngl *found a job, the good thing*

Classic Talking Heads. Not something I would listen to regularly.

Stop spamming talking heads 2,5/5

Love the talking heads, but this is one of their weaker albums imo

Such an original sound.

A wonderful follow-up to an already impressive debut. I dare say that this is more interesting to listen to than '77. You can already hear the band experimenting with the rhythmic grooves and flirting with world-music (via the late '70s NYC vibe) that would come to forever morph their music a few years later. This simply got my head bopping and toes tapping in a way that the debut album doesn't quite reach.

A good effort from the band but not as cohesive as their debut 10 months prior. Fear of Music a year later was a game changer.

Didn’t love it

I’m surprised and have realized through this journey (now 3 albums in from Talking Heads) that I’m not really a fan.

I liked it, nice and groovy. 3 out 5 wanted 2.5 stars but not an option.

Not their best album but still damn good! Underrated for sure

Its a unique voice but one that grates. There are interesting arrangements but the silly voice detracts from them.

There’s elements that are great, including some of the playing and song construction. I just think David Byrne as a front man is nerdy and awkward and that all comes through in the songs. It’s not that this is bad, it’s just so far from a complete record that we would hear from so many of their contemporaries. I know many love the Talking Heads, I just don’t really care for them.

„The Good Thing“ und „The Girls Want to Be with the Girls“ laufen über Funk-Figuren.

Not the best Talking Heads work. Good enough to makee hungry for other Talking Heads albums.

Jag gillar verkligen inledande Thank you for sending me an angel.

Brian Eno lyser verkligen igenom.

This is like the quintessential Talking Heads album. Not their best but the one that sounds the most like them. 7/10

3 stars another talking heads produced by Brian Eno!!!!!! this one i liked less than the Fear of Music album i think... my favorite song from this was "Take Me to the River". there were some cool sounds on that one

This album is a lot more disco and dance-influenced than Talking Heads' previous, debut album (which I've already gotten). "The Big Country" sounded familiar to me, and it was the best song to me as well as a good closer. While the other songs were catchy and fun, the debut album just seems better to me.

646/1101 - More of 77. A bit cleaner maybe but also a lot of filler. Still have no idea why these guys are considered the best New Wave-rs when XTC and The Police exist.

This album is forgettable to me. I like Take Me To The River, but otherwise, I will skip this one every time.

Hmm, where to start. The jittery rhythms and nervy, slightly neurotic vocal are going to be a love-it-or-hate-it thing, and for me it's a bit of both. 'Thank You for Sending Me an Angel' gets things off to a lively start, but 'Take Me to the River' is the clear highlight. It's a slinky, laid-back groove that steals the whole album and makes everything around it sound like it's trying a bit too hard. Outside of the odd gem, the songs feel more like clever ideas than tunes I want to sing along to. Interesting, never boring, but not one I'll rush back to. 3 stars.

Takes me by surprise again. Wasn’t absolutely blown away but every single song is a non skip. Really big fan now that’s two great albums

I feel like they weren't being at their wackiest here, but it's still good fun.

The only flaw I can find with this album is you can tell that Talking Heads are still figuring out how to master their unique sound. This album plays it a little too musically safe for my taste; it is in no way a bad album, but does fall short compared to the band's next albums. Top tracks: The Good Thing, Warning Sign, Artists Only

Really cool album, some awesome guitar sounds and such a weird angular groove

I’m so glad David Byrne exists… that this band existed. While not my favorite album of theirs, I was happy to listen to it again. Punk in their own eccentric way and ahead of their time. 3.5 Top tracks: I’m Not in Love, Take Me to the River

I’ve loved listening to full talking heads albums and getting to know Brian Eno through this project, but this one feels too tame for me. Found a job is a few levels above most of the rest of this album, but I did like the last song too

the heads. still different. ok.

Just Talking Heads 😊 Three stars…

Just the best. No skips. Such a consistently great band. Other than maybe Naked and True Stories, a straight 5-star career.

I struggle with Talking Heads if I am honest. A bit like Monty Python you have to wade through a lot of very ordinary stuff to find the undoubted gems. This album is no exception for me: some catchy and interesting tunes are ruined by Byrne’s voice which, to my mind, tries too hard to be too quirky in a forced way. It’s all a bit B52s but without the humour or melodic charm. Such a shame because when he is good he is very very good, but when he is bad…….

Hit after hit. Incredible album! So much fun to listen to. Fav song: With Our Love

It's been so long since I've listened to a talking heads album, my housemate in uni days played their records all the time and I can't help but think of him everytime I hear them. Not sure if I've listened to this album before but it's classic talking heads sounds, instrumentation and vibe. It's weird and fun and upbeat and I love it. Nothing on this album surprised me but I am already familiar with Talking Heads, I wonder how accessible this album is for someone who's never encountered them before.

take me to the river

This was their branching out album, still rooted in rock/punk rhythms but experimenting with grooves, which would culminate in the weirdness that is Remain in Light. Makes me think of similar inflection point albums from other bands like Rubber Soul or The Bends. I like it and wouldn't mind putting it in more regular rotation. The 1001 albums journey has made me appreciate Talking Heads more.

Arguably the greatest opening track of any album ever. Easy 5, taking heads at their best. Should be up there with Abbey Road and Ok Computer.

Thank You for Sending Me an Angel 3.5 With Our Love 3.4 The Good Thing 3.5 Warning Sign 3.7 The Girls Want to Be with the Girls 3.8 Found a Job 4 Artists Only 3.8 I'm Not in Love 4 Stay Hungry 3.5 Take Me to the River 4.2 The Big Country 3.7 Score: 3.736363636

Can't go far wrong with the Talking heads. David Byrne and crew always bring their sensibilities to the front of the music. Sometimes quirky and weird but always great.

I don’t like these guys nearly as much as they deserve.

Grooves!

I came to really dig into the Talking Heads far later in life than I should have. I'm so glad I did, though. Such a fantastic group. I'm not as familiar with this album as a whole. This album definitely has an unmistakable groove. Definitely dig it!

The more I listen to the talking heads, the more confused I get on whether I like them or not. I don’t like that you have to “squint” to be able to hear that they’re saying, like the music is always louder than them

Me like.

Favorite Song: The Girl Wants to Be with the Girls Least Favorite: Found A Job

It's just nonstop grooves

Awesome record

Great bass work and very approachable songs. It's maybe a bit repetitive. Favorite Songs: With Our Love ; The Good Thing ; Take Me to the River

Talking heads doing the talking heads thing. Always awesome

This is a foundational album in my library, so maybe I'm biased. Tina Weymouth is a national treasure. 11 keepers in 11 (100%). 4 bangers (36%). 136

It's a travesty that albums like this remain on the list and fill vital space for newer, better, releases. Taking Heads do not need 4 slots, 2 absolute maximum, probably just 1, and I honestly wouldn't mind if it were 0. A dull album by someone that can sing.

I really really disliked this

sounds very talking heads! maybe one listen isn't enough, the only song that stood out was "Take me to the river", the other ones just sound ok, but didn't struck me

Good musicians, and some nice melodies/ riffs but mostly quite forgettable. Not a fan of the vocals generally on this one. Favourite tracks: I’m Not In Love, Take Me to the River

This is definitely where Talking Heads take flight. The songs are generally more interesting than on the debut album (Psycho Killer excepted of course).

I like her voice and some of the arrangements but it’s not for me

I’m not a talking head

The Blue Jean Committee! All I can think about when I hear these guys is the Documentary Now! episode by Armisten and Hader. Anyway, aside from that these guys annoy me as most New Wave bands do. Don't like the cheesy affected vocals.

I've always loved Talking Heads, but I'm much more familiar with their later material. Although I've listened to their earlier albums before, I didn't remember much from this one. So it was fun to rediscover it! The album comes charging out of the gate with "Thank You for Sending Me an Angel," a fantastic, high-energy opener. The next few songs were enjoyable, especially the funky "With Our Love," but nothing really blew me away until "Found a Job." From there, the album really took off! "Artists Only" has that wonderfully quirky Talking Heads sound, "I'm Not in Love" is awesome, and "Stay Hungry" features some terrific funky guitar that captures the late-'70s sound. Of course, there's also their fantastic cover of Al Green's "Take Me to the River." They completely make that song their own. The closing track, "The Big Country," was just okay for me, but by then the album had more than earned its four stars. What I really appreciated was the variety. The songs have their own personalities, blending rock, funk, punk, and that unmistakable Talking Heads quirkiness. Not every track was a home run, but there were plenty of really good ones. And as a Rhode Islander, I have to give a shout-out to the band's roots at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence! Four stars and a definite vinyl buy!

muito descontraído e divertidinho. nada mau.

Good album. Kinda reminds me of The Cars.

And you might ask yourself why are there no hits? And you may ask yourself couldn’t they have written some hits?

Poppig rytmisk skiva. Inga låtar som sticker ut. Cover på Al greens Take me to the river. 3,5 av 5.

Solid 4. Also features Take Me To The River which is a phenomenal song.

I love the sparse, spiky sound of early Talking Heads – because how can you not! – but I don't love it more than Speaking in Tongues, which is a crazy omission from the list. That said, I can't be too disappointed to hear this. It's a fun album that sounds fantastic and has several irresistible songs that fill me with the kind of glee that only Talking Heads can!

I really tried to like it more than Remain in Light. I do like the music but I just have a problem with that whiny desperate voice which grates. You never know, with the way the list has been flooded with this band I may be indoctrinated by the end. If I could hear the album with no vocals at all I would probably give it 4 stars. Not this time though.

First of all, I absolutely love listening to Talking Heads with my husband ❤️ there really aren’t many better bands. This record in particular clearly had a huge influence on another of my favourite band the Pixies (acknowledged by Frank Black) I just love this kind of post punk/new wave arty anxiety music!!

4th best Talking Heads album, still a banger.

Own on vinyl! Cannot praise any higher, clear improvement over 77

Svolítið skemmtilegt dæmi.

can I say theyre overrated?

This is my third Talking Heads album and they havnt hit the same. Music is good though a bit repetitive, Vocals are annoying. It makes me afraid to go back to the first album in case I dont like it as much anymore. Anyway, I dont feel like any of the albums offer a different enough experience to be on a limited list like this.

This is a much better entry than the Talking Heads album I had the other week, but I still just cannot get into this.

So why did they include this album instead of Speaking in Tongues or Little Creatures? Their earlier work is already pretty well represented, but nothing from the mid-80’s, let alone Byrne’s solo albums.

"The Girl Wants to Be with the Girls" was waaaay ahead of its time. 4, but a good 4, just short of perfect.

The majority of the album sounds all blend together and it's hard to tell when one song ends and the next begins. Exceptions include the cover of Take Me to the River and the final song, The Big Country.

would anyone kill me if i said this is my favorite talking heads album
