Booker T. & The MG's
3/5
Instrumental. Lots of familiar sounds. Good stuff.
Jimi Hendrix
5/5
Amazing.
Fleetwood Mac
2/5
First disc was mostly boring. Lots of droning, not hearing a lot of great melodies. Not That Funny was horrible. SIsters of the Moon is probably the best song so far. Hopefully disc 2 is better.
Disc 2 is better so far. That's Enough for Me is definitely a highlight so far.
Overall disc 2 was better, but not a fan. Apparently enjoying this album takes a lot of work that I'm not willing to put in.
Led Zeppelin
4/5
Great album by one of the greatest rock bands ever. They are at full strength with their original, familiar sound before they started experimenting and branching out. That said, the album seems to become a bit repetitive/formulaic which causes a bit of a drag. I'm sure when it was new and fresh it didn't feel like that, but for today, it doesn't quite hold up as well as some of the previous, tighter LZ albums.
The Cure
4/5
Muddy Waters
4/5
It's sometimes hard to appreciate music that is so clearly the root of everything that came after it, which this clearly is. Having a full band and great sound quality, make this a really good listen. It's minimal but robust at the same time. It was a delight to listen to and appreciate, but also an album of it's time. Probably would be fun to have on while sitting on the back porch drinking a whiskey. Loved it.
Manic Street Preachers
3/5
Good britpop album. I prefer their later stuff, but this is good as well despite being less melodic.
4/5
Bad Company
4/5
This album has a ton of hits. WAY better than I expected.
Radiohead
3/5
This is a good follow up to Kid A, but lacks the same tight direction of previous and subsequent albums. It feels a bit cobbled together with some bright spots. Solid Radiohead album, but not up to their usual standards.
Oasis
4/5
Hard to be objective about an album I've listened to probably 100 times.
Talking Heads
4/5
This was my first time listening to this album. Phenomenal. It's the type of album that seems like it needs a few listens to grow, but it was honestly growing on me about halfway through. I definitely see myself listening again.
Yes
3/5
This band is more prog rock than I expected. Good combo of interesting/complex music with a few radio hits.
Nine Inch Nails
3/5
This was good. NIN can get a bit repetitive for me, but this was a very interesting album.
Stan Getz
4/5
Coastal weekend vibes.
Crosby, Stills & Nash
3/5
Great album.
Circle Jerks
3/5
Not a huge hardcore fan, but I actually enjoyed it. I doubt I'll go back a lot, but it was a quick listen.
Pet Shop Boys
2/5
Album is not doing it for me. There are some moments, but it feels like it is sacrificing the soul of other 90s brit bands for style.
ABBA
2/5
Sam Cooke
4/5
Love it, high energy. Will be returning to this.
Ray Charles
4/5
One song in and fuck yes. A little disappointed that it gets much softer after this, but it's still great.
The Rolling Stones
4/5
Dusty Springfield
5/5
This album is absolute tour de force. Hit after hit. This is great.
Public Enemy
4/5
I feel like I need to listen to this about 15 more times. This was a great listen though.
5/5
One of the top 50 albums all time. Obviously 5/5.
Kendrick Lamar
4/5
Culture Club
2/5
It is a fun album, but it has obviously not aged well. It is campy and over the top.
Tim Buckley
3/5
Crazy how much he and his son sound a like. Good album too.
Led Zeppelin
4/5
David Bowie
4/5
Very chill. Not like any other David Bowie album I've listened to. No soaring hits or catchy melodies, but mostly filled soundscapes that are great to relax to.
AC/DC
3/5
There's a lot to like here with the overall sound, but it comes off a bit repetitive to me.
The Kinks
4/5
Loved it.
Elis Regina
3/5
The electric keyboard sounds like absolute garbage. Not sure why they wanted these songs to sound like they're using a toy to create the music. Elis can obviously sing well though. Definitely some good songs here, but it's a little hit and miss for me. It's also not straight down the line for bossa nova, which is great, but it moves away from the vibes I'm looking for when turning on some bossa nova. Can't imagine I'll return to this.
Shivkumar Sharma
5/5
Very much enjoyed listening to this. I would obviously need to be in the right mood (high), but I could see myself going back to this occasionally.
Sade
3/5
It's nice. Not for me, but no complaints.
Depeche Mode
4/5
More hits on this album than I expected. Really enjoyed it.
Patti Smith
4/5
This obviously requires multiple listens, but it's honestly not like anything else I've listened to.
Raekwon
4/5
Need to listen to this at least 1,000 more times.
Eurythmics
2/5
Not for me.
The Strokes
4/5
Really enjoyed revisiting this album. I wish it had more variation, but at the same time, it does not get boring because of their very original take on garage/indie music.
Beatles
5/5
One of the best albums of all time. Innovative, diverse and enjoyable. Only criticism is that it's not longer.
The Smiths
3/5
Music is good, vocals are annoying. I liked this a lot less than I thought I would.
Madonna
4/5
This is fantastic. Perhaps a bit of nostalgia, but it's good start to finish.
Carpenters
2/5
This is 70s pop. It's fine.
Tears For Fears
4/5
This was great. Lots of hits and the ones I didn't know were good. No low points.
Earth, Wind & Fire
4/5
Very enjoyable listen. Lots of great instrumentals on top of the vocals. Also, lots of progressive and creative artistic ideas.
Wild Beasts
1/5
This album fucking sucks. By far the worst album on this list so far. It's like it's stuck in 1990s world music. I could imagine hearing this playing in Pier 1 Imports or the Nature Store.
David Bowie
3/5
It's fine. Not bad, not nearly as great as other Bowie albums though.
Rufus Wainwright
2/5
I feel like ever since Poses, and even intermittently with Poses, RH has been interested in style more than substance. II really like the style of the album and can feel what he's trying to do, but just doesn't quite stick the landing. It's good, but far from great.
Joni Mitchell
3/5
Harry Nilsson
4/5
This was fantastic. How have I never listened to this?
Calexico
3/5
This was great, somewhat hit or miss, but I think I'll come back to it. Really enjoyed the sound.
Dennis Wilson
4/5
How have I never heard anything from this album? It's a bit uneven thematically, but it's a really good listen.
Brian Wilson
4/5
This album is absolutely bursting with musical ideas. Honestly though, I almost feel like it needs a little bit dialed back. It's super fun to listen to though.
Radiohead
4/5
Still amazing.
Foo Fighters
4/5
Great album. 3-4 massive hits. I'm not really into the non hits as much because they tend to get a little metal adjacent, but it's still great. Somehow very heavy, but also not dark.
Bob Dylan
4/5
Great album, better first half, but overall it was excellent. Modern Times is a bit closer in style to his older stuff than I realized.
John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers
4/5
Great blues album. Seems to be a transition album between traditional blues and 70s rock like Zeppelin and others.
Youssou N'Dour
3/5
It is interesting and I'm glad I listened, but I don't see myself regularly returning to this.
3/5
Solid.
Blur
5/5
This album changes lives.
Solange
2/5
This really didn't do much for me. Admittedly, it's not my cup of tea, but nothing really jumped out at me as "oh, I see why some people love this album." It was too mellow and just didn't have many hooks that I noticed.
Eagles
3/5
Lots of hits, obviously, but it's kind of just solid to me.
Black Sabbath
3/5
Good not great. More in line with what I originally expected from Black Sabbath than Paranoid.
Elton John
4/5
First half is a 5, second half tails off slightly. Amazing, all time great album though.
David Bowie
3/5
Solid.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
2/5
If not for the technical nature of the music being played I would give this 1 star. It's pretty chaotic and sounds more like an action sequence to a movie than music that I would want to listen to. Also, it's not varied enough in tone to be interesting.
The Mothers Of Invention
3/5
Soft Machine
2/5
Highly experimental album that was fine, but I just didn’t get that into it.
Beck
4/5
Classic album start to finish. Even the non-singles are great.
Sister Sledge
2/5
Some good songs, but others that I found annoying. Will not be listening again.
Randy Newman
3/5
Afrika Bambaataa
3/5
This actually grew on me quite a bit as it went on. Good stuff. Obviously considering when it came from it's highly influential. I would listen again.
Iron Butterfly
3/5
Another influential album, which was good. I don't have anything negative to say. Other's have built on this, so I understand it's importance, but it's just good not great for me.
Pink Floyd
5/5
Legendary album that lives up to it's very high reputation.
Nirvana
4/5
Greta album
Neil Young
3/5
Honestly, it's a little hit and miss for me. There are some truly great songs, but also some low points.
Ryan Adams
5/5
Top to bottom, phenomenal album.
MC Solaar
3/5
I'm sure it's great, but I don't speak French, so I can't digest the most important part of hip hop. I do find the music palatable though and generally enjoyed the vibe of listening to it this afternoon.
Lauryn Hill
4/5
Good stuff.
Queen
3/5
Great singing and music, solid album.
The Who
5/5
Amazing album start to finish. Easy 5 star.
Black Sabbath
4/5
Just a damn good album. RIP Prince of Darkness.
Elvis Costello
2/5
There are interesting ideas here I guess, but the singing is abrasive, the melodies are all over the place and it just doesn't ever seem to go anywhere. I honest don't get it at all. Really did not care for it. I'm 3/4 of the way through it and I can't wait for it to end.
Amy Winehouse
4/5
This album was fantastic. A mix of a lot of genres and it really works. None of the hits, but it had a really vibe to it that just made the entire thing seem like a breathe of fresh air.
Elvis Costello
3/5
This is not nearly as obnoxious as the previous Elvis Costello album I listened to. It's still not my favorite, but it's having it's moments.
New York Dolls
3/5
It's a really great sound that is clearly influential to lots of bands I've listened to. I think it's impossible to understand how innovative it was without having lived through the era. That said, as innovative as the sound is, it's also clear why it didn't hit mainstream.
The Fall
2/5
It's fine. As with many non-mainstream albums on this list, it's obviously a product of it's time, but devoid of hooks to draw me in.
Miriam Makeba
3/5
Portishead
3/5
It's definitely an interesting listen. Vocals are good, music is very chill, good album to listen to while working.
The Temptations
3/5
The Vines
4/5
This album fucking rocks. I don't know how I've been sleeping on this.
N.W.A.
4/5
This album is a delight. It really hits and never really holds back and slumps.
Nirvana
5/5
Amazing album, front to back.
Red Hot Chili Peppers
4/5
Phenomenal album with tons of hits. Non-hits can be a little hit or miss though.
Paul McCartney and Wings
3/5
Deep Purple
3/5
This album rocks a lot harder than I thought it would. Definitely enjoyed it.
Fats Domino
3/5
Great album
The Beach Boys
4/5
Damn good album. Beach Boys are always a little limited in range, but this album is as consistent as it gets.
Buddy Holly & The Crickets
3/5
It's enjoyable and I'm sure groundbreaking for it's time, but is clearly dated.
Elvis Presley
4/5
Unlike a lot of older albums, this is timeless. Loving this.
Barry Adamson
2/5
It's fine, but I don't see how this is a must listen 90s album.
John Lennon
3/5
King Crimson
3/5
Sly & The Family Stone
4/5
The Rolling Stones
5/5
Arcade Fire
3/5
I have once again listened to Arcade Fire and they really just don't do much for me.
Faust
2/5
I'm really not sure about this one yet. I still haven't finished the first disc and it's 6 hours later. This album is painful. I see how Radiohead among others were influenced by this album, but it's like if you took all droning parts of Radiohead, but removed all the high energy climaxes and replaced them with super annoying nonsense, that's what this is. Not the worst album I've listened to, but I do not care for it.
Cocteau Twins
2/5
I listened to this album and I honestly remember very little about it.
Buena Vista Social Club
3/5
It's good. Definitely a vibe. It also does not have a generic found to it, but it also didn't have any songs that really jumped out at me. Very enjoyable though.
Tina Turner
4/5
It's really good.
Common
4/5
Literally knew nothing about Common going in except he was on Silo. Loved this album though.
Ray Price
4/5
So far this album is fantastic.
Jack White
4/5
This is a super even album with a lot of good tracks on it and nothing bad. It certainly doesn't have the heights of the White Stripes heyday, but it is very good.
Frank Ocean
3/5
The Specials
2/5
This is not doing much for me. Pretty boring, but at least not annoying. Looking forward to not listening to this anymore though.
Eagles
4/5
Ms. Dynamite
2/5
This is fine. I'm not a hip hop head, but have definitely enjoyed some of the albums that have popped up. This one just never escalates to the level that I can appreciate.
Soundgarden
4/5
Great album.
Songhoy Blues
4/5
The Jesus And Mary Chain
3/5
This clearly influenced Britpop, so I definitely enjoyed it.
The Rolling Stones
3/5
Not a huge fan of this album. Seems to largely be driven by the studio and record company. Nothing wrong with it, just obviously meant to be a pop album and not overly representative of what they are known for.
R.E.M.
3/5
I really wanted to love it, but it was just okay for me.
Peter Gabriel
4/5
I almost gave it 3, but on second listen this is great.
Neil Young
3/5
It’s really not great, but not bad because it’s Neil young.
Jamiroquai
3/5
Not as bad as I thought it was going to be, in fact, pretty solid, but still not my thing.
Jane's Addiction
3/5
It's a solid album with a couple good hits, but most of it doesn't have quite the same punch of other bands of that era.
Willie Nelson
2/5
It's fine. I normally the old timey country stuff, but this didn't do much for me.
Jeff Buckley
5/5
Haven't listened to this album in years, but man is it good.
3/5
Dr. Octagon
3/5
Actually really enjoyed this. Not a huge rap fan, but it was fun and interesting.
Sabu
3/5
This was good and I generally like this type of non-western stuff when it comes out, but I wasn't able to extract from listening to it or reading about it why this was on the list.
Femi Kuti
3/5
This was good. I enjoyed the mixes of genre that went into this.
The Stooges
3/5
I enjoyed this more than I expected.
The Smiths
2/5
Morrissey is annoying. This album is fine I guess, but I doubt I'll listen again.
The Residents
1/5
WHAT THE FUCK.
The Rolling Stones
4/5
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
1/5
No.
LCD Soundsystem
3/5
I liked this more than I thought I would. It starts out very electronic, but definitely drifts towards ending rock for most of it.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
3/5
This is a good album, but I just can't get into reggae. It all sounds the same to me. I literally listened to the album 1.5x and didn't realize it had started over.
The Last Shadow Puppets
3/5
This was a surprise album. Really enjoyed it. I think they took the gimmick out of Arctic Monkeys and just made some really good songs.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
3/5
It's good, but man is it short.
The Velvet Underground
3/5
Good stuff.
Adele
4/5
Insane album.
Beck
4/5
Beck's best album by a mile.
Cornershop
3/5
This was a super interesting album spanning lots of different genres, but also some coherent. Reminded me a bit of Badly Drawn Boy and other late 90s, early 2000s indie rock bands.
Cowboy Junkies
2/5
Man, this album is slow. I'm just not feeling it. The Sweet James was okay I guess, but really nothing jumped out at all.
R.E.M.
3/5
Same as the others. Some really good songs, some forgettable.
The Allman Brothers Band
4/5
This album just makes me want to play guitar
Stevie Wonder
5/5
The Psychedelic Furs
3/5
Pretty good album. I liked it better the second time. Seems a bit like a combination of punk and new wave.
Cyndi Lauper
4/5
This was a fantastic album. Crazy how many hits it has.
Dolly Parton
2/5
I've listened to it 2 full times. Not doing much for me.
Johnny Cash
4/5
This was great. It's been a while since I listened to Folsom, but this one might be better.
Elvis Presley
4/5
This album is awesome. Great mix of country, rock and blues.
R.E.M.
3/5
As with all the other REM albums, it's really good, but I just want to like it more than I do.
The Kinks
4/5
Television
3/5
I enjoyed this. It seems obvious that The Strokes were influenced by this, but apparently they weren't. Regardless of what they say, it had to be indirect. Really good stuff.
MGMT
4/5
There are a lot of good hits from this album and I also enjoyed the non-hits more than I thought I would. It's a short album, but I'm delightfully surprised.
OutKast
4/5
Absolutely incredible album. This albums covers a wide range of styles and genres, along with a handful of massive hits. Really, really good.
William Orbit
2/5
This was fine, but sort of bland and everything kind of runs together. I know he pioneered techno in the 80s and 90s, but honestly, the genre kind of sucks, it led to some truly awful electronic music and there are better examples.
Laibach
2/5
I do not enjoy this.
Green Day
5/5
So good.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
3/5
It's not bad, but just like others, reggae just doesn't do it for me because it all feels so similar.
5/5
Dinosaur Jr.
4/5
Really enjoyed this. I can definitely see myself listening to this band a lot.
The Magnetic Fields
3/5
It's got some solid stuff on it, but I find the length to be a legitimate issue. I wouldn't call it "filler" because a lot of the lesser songs are still good, but this good have been a much better album by tightening it up. I assume the length is the idea and the point... it's just not a great idea.
Astor Piazzolla
2/5
It's fine. I appreciate the musicality to this, but it's more like background music. It's more atmospheric, than melodic, so I'm kind of unclear why this album is on the list. I could see myself listening again, but as background music, not as something I'm actually engaging with.
The Doors
3/5
It’s good, but I don’t think it’s as good as other albums from the era.
Queen
3/5
Really good stuff. Not a whole lot of major hits though.
The Zutons
2/5
This does not seem to belong on this list. It's fine, I just don't hear anything unique or groundbreaking at all. Unlike UK only artists like Suede, Blur, etc, these guys just don't seem like they're doing anything meaningful enough to warrant their inclusion. Still... it's not bad, but kind of meh.
The Incredible String Band
2/5
It was fine.
Linkin Park
3/5
The Stone Roses
4/5
Excellent album from start to finish.
Pixies
3/5
It's a good album. I like it, but it's also a little abrasive.
Scott Walker
2/5
So dramatic and pretty dated.
Teenage Fanclub
2/5
I liked their sound a lot, but didn't hear much in terms of memorable songs.
Ravi Shankar
3/5
It was good and interesting how he explained the music theory, but not quite as enjoyable as Call of the Valley.
The Isley Brothers
4/5
This album fucking ruled.
Meat Loaf
4/5
This was actually really great. I need to listen to this album more.
Dizzee Rascal
2/5
It's okay. I'm not a huge hip hop fan, but I've founds things about the other ones on this list. This one isn't really doing much for me.
Weather Report
2/5
Jazz fusion nonsense. I guess it has it's place, but this really did absolutely nothing for me.
Peter Frampton
4/5
This album is amazing. The jams are Phish-esque, singing is incredible and guitar is obviously great.
