Album Summary

Out of Step is the sole studio album by American hardcore punk band Minor Threat. It was released on 45 RPM vinyl in April 1983 through Dischord Records. Although Out of Step has only been released on CD in limited quantities, it has been repressed on vinyl as recently as 2010, and all tracks from the album are available on Minor Threat's 1989 compilation album Complete Discography. It is considered as an elementary piece of the punk rock (specifically hardcore punk) genre and has been cited by many critics and magazines as one of the best progressions for the history of rock music, which specifically helped shape the path of many genres of underground musical currents (alternative music). Its influence is notorious in future bands that would boost the youth crew movement, also in other genres such as grunge, post-hardcore, 90's skate punk and thrash metal, as well in the development of the New York hardcore music scene and aesthetics style. This album’s increased complexity in songs, with more elaborate riffs and arrangements, is its main distinguishing factor compared to the band’s previous recordings. The bass octaves retain the dynamics of the guitar line. For this album Brian Baker became second guitarist and Steven Hansgen joined the bass. The lyrics of the majority of the songs reflect self-reflection, youth frustration, personal problems and difficulties with friendships, in contrast to that of Minor Threat's first recordings (which contained a politically critical message and as opposed to drug use).

If you’re looking for influential hardcore albums look no further. There’s an honesty here and despite the rough edges this album is easy to get through.

this was a fun little EP.

So important but I was never agitated enough to love hardcore. But I love all its grandchildren! Lol

great early eighties punk rock. Hits all the right tone and groove and angst. Love the closer "cashing in".

This is my kind of punk. Because ya know, as a middle aged mom, Ian McKay as a teenager is what sings to my heart.

A nice of shot punk is always nice, unfortunately similar throughout though

Punk never wastes your time. 3.5

wow so much energy! Loved it

It had a fun energy and didn’t outstay its welcome.

Great classic punk album

If you caught me on a more high energy day (rare) I might’ve enjoyed this more, but as I’m not, I didn’t really like it. Interesting hearing the bands of today in this though.

Its a fun interesting energetic little punk album. It is short but it also doesn't feel short. A little too screamy but I can still get behind it.

Well this was short and sweet! Not something I'd listen to again, but I appreciated the punk rock energy.

The best thing about this album is the running time. At just over 20 minutes I was able to grit my teeth and get through it. In fairness, it is just about listenable, but I highly doubt I would be saying that if it was a double album lasting 90 minutes!

Not my favorite Minor Threat, but it's a black sheep that points towards a post-hardcore future if you squint a little.

Punk, nothing too notable

Short and to the point, I like it

Solid punk album that sounds like 100 other solid punk albums

Short and punchy, OGs of Hardcore, nothing but respect for this one.

Heard of the name a lot, but not actually heard. Early hardcore punk, which is probably a little noisy for me, but still on the liking it side.

FAVO: Little Friend, Cashing in

I love the five-piece Minor Threat, even more than the classic line-up. I always think of this as an EP so it doesn't come up in album conversatoins often but I think it's perfect!

Interesting the role this album played in the thinking of people around me back in the day. I always appreciated its bass lines and rhythm. And that’s what grips me still. 4 Boolean: True

In like a lion, out like a lion. A really fast lion. Album cover like a lamb. Running away from other lambs. To complete the bastardized saying. I liked it well enough, though wasn’t exactly blown away. But given its impact, I think it’s deserving of a placement on the list, and it certainly didn’t overstay its welcome.

9 songs with 21 minutes total run time? Thank you very much. I appreciate it. However, not my thing. If you a punk, I reckon this is a brilliant album and the gigs were some experience. 2/5 as a bit too trashy and high energy for my sensitive disposition today.

I’m glad this record was only 21 minutes long. Not because it’s terrible, but because I’m not sure I could happily handle much more of Minor Threat’s rage. Every song is aggressive, super intense and full of raw energy, to the point where it feels like an assault on the ears. I like how tight it is, and how punchy the musicianship is, but realistically punk rock this assertive will never be fully my cup of tea. It’s still a solid 6/10 listen, but it’s rare I’ll ever give a punk album high than this.

En vrai un peu punk comme ça pas mal mais hyper répétitif

Demasiada energía para un sesentón. Al menos es breve.

Like someone's just given you a red bull laced with cocaine -Full on energy. Get this on while you're playing Tony Hawk pro skater and you'll have a great time

No me gusta este estilo que sw sienten solo gritos. Ni oara entrenar

At least it was brief

Pretty inoffensive. The extreme repetition is fine because none of the songs drag on for too long. They probably have a good message somewhere in there, if only I could understand what the singer is saying. If you had told me in reality there were actually only two longer songs, I would've believed you. I can hardly tell one song from the other. Favs: Betray, Cashing In, No Reason

This album is a really tight 20 minutes. This makes me want to skateboard aggressively. Favorite Songs: Betray, Think Again

I don't like hardcore punk very much and this did nothing to change my mind. It all sounds like one song, and not a good one. I have a lot of time for Ian MacKaye in Fugazi but this just sounds too much like shit. No variety and no vocal appeal for me. I appreciate the spirit, and couple of tracks are OK, but on the whole I'd rather listen to silence. At least it's short!

Loud, fast, shouty, angry and sweary…should be perfect for anyone still enjoying this punk style. If you don’t I guess their response would be “Boo-f****ing-hoo!”

Not my type of punk really and I think I would need to be in a very specific type of mood to enjoy listening to this... I was not in that mood today!

A minor threat to my sanity.

You don't need to scream at me😫

At times, I can hear Megadeth, Nirvana, Big Boys, Green Day, Thrice, AFI. This was an interesting listen but I do not enjoy this vocal style and probably won't listen again

more zealotry that I can't pick up on from DC. can see the influence on modern punk rock but bit shouty for me. interesting to learn about 'straight edge' punk but seems like they also eschew tuneful singing. Cashing In was good, more of that would have been solid 3 as it is I'm torn. 2.5

This was the kind of shit I loved when I was much younger. A blast from the past for me!

DC hardcore pioneers, not their best in my opinion, and a solid runway toward Fugazi

yes, we get it, you're angry

A very short and homogenous album. Started out very strongly but at some point it kinda bored me, partly because there's so little melody in this. I think they've got better recordings than this, like their 'Salad Days' in 1985. I think this album is better listened to with every track taken separately rather than than the whole thing in one shot, even though it's so short. 6.5/10

Sounds like they are playing the drums with a broken drill, and I like it

Klassiker!

This made me laugh that it’s in the top 1001 albums, yes I like it as it’s my punk style, but there were so many British bands like this one around 1977-81, all thrash, heavy punk, and many were as good as Minor Threat, there’s going to be so many albums that could’ve been in the 1001………just saying

Either I'm not much into hardcore punk, or this album/EP just isn't that good.

I'm not a punk fan generally, and while this didn't totally change that, I will say it helped push me a little further towards punk enjoyment. I liked the first song or two, then kinda got bored. But there is actual some melody in some of the instrumentation here which is nice.

What a way to start my morning; no coffee needed. Going for only 21 minutes, it's like having a Ristretto right after waking up. 7/10

If the Monkees started a punk band.

Okay incredible adorable cover I’m not sure this will be my genre but I guess I also didn’t think metal was my genre. Or is hardcore punk incompatible with metal? I can’t remember. Really tryna rewatch SLC Punk though. Irrelevantly. Very irrelevantly as this is 1983. A year core to my identity bc of Flashdance. And The Hunger. And… what else. The 1983 of it all is a v good omen. ANYWAY. // Such a quick little guy! Will absolutely relisten when I’m more in the mood, bc a mellow morning drive to a sculpture park wasn’t it 😂 So I’m listening a few days later, on my flight to Seattle, which is also not quite the vibe but certainly moreso. “boo fucking hoo” in lyric form is so fucking good HA Reading how they informed the straight edge moment, something I haven’t thought of since high school, and having visceral flashbacks of cute boys in skinny jeans with the X on their hands in my art classes who I’d invariably learn were not in fact straight edge. I bet some were though. Interested in learning more about their place in hardcore history and wtf hardcore is relative to everything else, and how DC and New York and Seattle and anywhere differed or interacted or whatever. Star rating because I don’t think I can see myself listening to this ever again, but very very interested in the history. Bumped up for boo fucking hoo.

It's bouncy and aggressive punk rock. Not something I would actively look to listen, but at least it was fun. STANDOUTS: Think Again; Cashing In

Nope, hate punk

As with similar albums, it’s a good afternoon energy album, but like many gets lost in its own noise. There’s a reason most punk hardcore songs are two minutes long.

Turns out hardcore just kind of isn’t for me.

Another bag of shite from yet another American punk band. A threat to good music? Not even a minor threat. Just out of step but no doubt cashing in.

Ei oikein lähtenyt tämäkään. ⭐️⭐️

⭐⭐ Kauheeta kailottamista. Olis ollu kiva saada selvää jostain.

This rules. Just awesome 80s hardcore punk. "Think Again" is one I had in my library but forgot about. It's still awesome. I mostly had EP stuff from Minor Threat - Out of Step is definitely much more polished than those. Great riffs, great bass tone, awesome production. Sounds excellent. A quick listen but lots of fun.

This is music made for me, but I can see that some may not like it as much as I do. The fuck it attitude of punk and the edge of noise with a little musicality thrown in and the wild pulse of machine gun drums. Great mix!

Recognized the band name, they were a local thing when I was in high school, though I was unfamiliar. Looked at the track list — nice! 9 songs, under 23 minutes. Should be fun. By song #8, I was wondering how 20 minutes lasted so long. Influential, OK. Like it? No, sir.

i know i've said that things were one-note before, but damn i swear this guy only sings one note. And yeah, I know that's not the point, but even for a short record like this, I was getting pretty sick of it by song 4. The band is cool, though. And the lyrics, when I could discern them, were bitchin'.

I was looking forward to some solid angry rock, but I couldn't get into this one.

More noise but slightly better than the last noise album

I think Ian McKaye is one of the great voices in punk both literally and philosophically and this is his ever steps and it’s all there. The lyrics that turn the personal into the political and vice Versa, the hectoring voice, moments of calm in the chaos. It’s short, punchy and powerful

More punk bullshit. I dont like punk very much. The vocals were cool but for me, it was just another punk album. Its repetitive but fun. Its crazy but boring. Not bad but not good.

A solid quick and dirty punk album. Thrashy, angry, just a shade catchy. Ashamedly this is my first time with Minor Threat, but I can pretty safely say I lean Fugazi instead. Still, a solid ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Skrev en recension som försvann. Klassisk punk, intensivt och tillräckligt underhållande för en trea.

That’s a hard no from me. On the bright side, it was only 22 minutes, so it could’ve been worse.

I love punk rock, and I hope punk rock loves me back. This is so generic that it cannot be bad. I love it!

I enjoy this, it's good. Sometimes that's enough.

Þetta er sturluð plata. Ógeðslega hrá, hröð og hörð.

Gott pönk, hrátt og hratt eins og pönk á að vera.

I liked my t shirt as much as the album

Not horrible but every song sounds the same

Pure, simple, effective, unadulterated, energetic, thought-provoking, LOUD, aggressive, vulnerable, timeless. Long live Minor Threat.

This does everything a hardcore punk album should do, just straight to the point, songs are only 1-2 minutes long, and everything is fast and aggressive as hell. I know that Minor Threat are considered to be one of the original, classic hardcore punk bands. And don't get me wrong, I'm not denying that at all, but for a band with such a reputation, I'll be honest I was expecting a bit more. Like I said, this does do everything an album of this genre should, but I just doesn't really do anything more than that. It's well and truly a hardcore punk album, but nothing really more. It does very little to stand out outside of that. Definitely still worth a listen, as it does have very significant historical importance to its genre, but I was just hoping for something slightly more memorable.

punk icon

boooooooooring he's so whiny and bleh

1) Cashing In 2) It Follows 3) Think Again Least Favourite: Look Back & Laugh

Raw and unrestrained energy that wants to be heard

It's pretty good for what it is but it's hard punk. 2.5

If this is a minor threat, then I'm guessing Fugazi is the major threat?

More Punk slop I fear. Good energy, but every song sounds pretty much the same. Bass is pretty solid though, go off king.

head bump - decent but not really my vibe

Not a fan of this genre and don’t really see how you can be. Kind of terrible. One redeeming quality was it didnt last long. Moving on….

The instrumentals were stellar at times, but the songs overall were so bad that I stopped enjoying even that bright spot. Which is saying a lot, considering the album is only 21 minutes long. My fear is that this is what non-millennials think Green Day sounds like, which to give them credit, the ending of Cashing In sounds like Holiday.

A solid but unspectacular hardcore punk album. If you enjoy the genre you probably liked it. If you don’t, this album likely isn’t the one to change your mind. In typical Ian Mackaye fashion, the lyrics are poignant at times but also very edgelordy. Brian Baker’s guitar work on this album is better than it was on previous minor threat albums but not as good as it would become with Bad Religion.

My inner pop punk princess was having a great time for the first three or so minutes of this album head banging along. And then less fun as it became clear it was just 20+ minutes of unintelligible screaming.

Minor Threat is a hardcore punk band.As a rule, I don’t like hardcore. Too loud and abrasive. Also, I didn’t like the violence attached to the scene. I don’t want to be in the mosh pit. However, I do like the Dead Kennedys. Jello Biafra had something to say and had a very dark sense of humour. Let’s see what they are like. The cover of the album is pretty neat. The album consists of short fast songs. The vocalist is not very good. The songs are guitar based. The guitar is like a buzz saw. The band seems to take itself pretty seriously. The lyrics, if you can decipher them, are not ironic or funny at all. Listening to this album gave me a bit of a headache. The songs do have a good fast beat. Good for the mosh pit!! Finally, all the songs sound all the same. This is not a very good album. Two stars.

Nothing standing out to me until the "Drive!" in "Look Back and Laugh" The title track "Out of Step" is great. I love the ad-lib talking. It think that part of what I like about this is the more "pop" or "mass appeal" aspects of the song but it gives some much needed variety to the album. Breaks up the tracks that all sound very similar. Combined with "Cashing In" as the closing 2 tracks on the album gives the entire experience a strong finish. I would classify this album as generic Punk, I find myself wanting more variety throughout but can't argue with the last 2 tracks being great.
