I think I have a better appreciation for classic country music because this was pretty good. A lot of similarities to Dolly and June Carter’s sounds.

One of the most complete albums ever made.
Some of it ok, some of it too progressive/experimental for me
Not my preferred genre (60’s jazz soul?) but more pleasing to listen to than some of the stuff I’ve tried here.
Great album! Learned T formed a metal group, ‘Body Count’
Pretty mellow, chill rock
Never realized how great this whole album was!
Could be a solid 3.5 if 1/2 stars permitted. Decent rock album aside from/in addition to some of the falsetto-heavy vocals.
I see the significance of this album regarding influence on other musicians (also a lot of Rolf/Dr.T from the Muppets) but it’s just not my thing, the spoken lounge/jazz music - although the lyrics are impressive.
This album is just ‘ok’ - sounds very homogenous; I *really* don’t understand why this is considered one of the greatest albums ever made…
Thanks to Tommy Boy, I’d heard of Herbine Hancock but never heard any of his music. It’s got… an interesting interpretive jazz, world music vibe. Kinda neat.
‘Of Course’ has a cool Indian vibe to it.
A nostalgic album for me
Decent album instrumentally and vocally; just too slow/mellow for me. Or maybe just have to be in the right mood to listen to it.
It’s ok; def not the best, 2nd best, or 3rd best Zep album…
More of a late 70’s/early 80’s new-wave pop punk sound than I was expecting. Maybe later stuff would be more gritty rock.
Most songs start out/have a kind of chill feel but then break into a maniacal beat that creates an eclectic lack of cohesion/ continuity within each [long] song. Overall, maybe good background music if you’re in the right mindset.
This was a fun, funky, spa rock album. Need to check out their ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ album from 2025.
I’d actually put this at a 3.5 if I could
This was a fun, modernized homage to early punk; simple beats/rhythms.
Jazz is really not my thing but I guess this sounded good 🤷🏼♂️
If so could give 3.5 stars, I would.
A good psych blues rock album I guess, if you like Janis.
It’s alright, a little more modernized orchestral arrangements; just not my thing.
Very experimental 60’s psych rock. ‘Freak Out’ is kind of a good title for this… Was ok; maybe a little too trippy/eclectic for my taste.
This was a really easy-to-listen-to jazz/blues/soul album. Very good.
Realized how vanilla bubble gum Elvis was (at least early on) with his souless covers of Ray Charles’ “I Got a Woman” and Little Richard’s “Tutti Frutti” on this album. Would prefer to give this a 2.5 but will settle for a 3.
Jazz is just not my thing but I guess this is a decent album?
A fun alt punk rock album
This was a cool album. Kind of a mix between 90’s alt rock, 80’s new wave, and deep house chill vibe.
This was a wild album; can’t explain the eclectic sound of it. Def neo-soul, but can’t put my finger on what else…
Kravitz’s 1st album; didn’t realize his catalog dated back to ‘89!
Sparkle City was cool but otherwise not really my thing
Didn’t think this album was as great as I thought it would be/as I’d heard it was.
Eh
Very nostalgic album for me; don’t know that I’d truly give it 4 stars, would prefer 3.5 but the nostalgia probably would bump it up.
This was fuckin bizarre; sort of Modest Mouse-sounding vocals but much darker and weirder. A LOT of flat notes and sharp notes, lyrically and instrumentally. Feels like listening to this too much could fuck up your head —but I also couldn’t turn it off? Blue Rosebuds and Weight Lifting Lulu were memorable.
A solid 3.5. I see maybe some influence for “ Alanis later from this album? Could maybe bump to a 4 but some of the songs were a little slow for me.
This was a fun album. I see how they could have been a rising rival to the Beatles/Stones in England.
No usually a big fan of Rush based on radio play but this was decent.
Surprisingly good listen. Kind of like a more Irish-sounding Band of Heathens…? Again, wish I could give a 3.5.
Mix of Talking Heads and Thompson Twins/quintessential 80’s pop sound with the dying sound of disco. It was… okay I guess but just not really my thing.
Pretty neat psychedelic club electronica. I could listen to this.
Had heard of TTD but never listened to him - pretty good stuff! Does a lot of the instrumentation himself (not sure on this debut album or not but generally following this).
This is now the 2nd (3rd?) Byrds album presented to me and I think I can safely say that I could probably listen to any of their stuff!
Very Coldplay-sounding. ‘The Bones of You’ and ‘Mirrorball’ are good but ‘One Day Like This’ is the hit for me.
I just can’t stand 80’s pop music
Very Dylan-esque; not bad.
A few songs were nostalgic but otherwise nothing to write home about.
Instrumentally was decent world music; lyrics were in a language I didn’t recognize (Portuguese?). Eh.
Good debut album but def like ‘Making Movies’ or ‘Brothers in Arms’ better
One of the top 5 most complete albums ever made, IMHO.
This was a cool discovery!
Not an R&B guy but this was ok.
Pretty decent reggae album. Good background chill music.
This was cool, shoulda given AD a chance sooner. Gonna need to check out more of their stuff.
Meh. Not my thing; *very* acoustic and calm singer/songwriter. Like, chiller than Jack Johnson. Maybe in the right mood, but otherwise, pass.
Timing of the lyrics/vocals and instruments seemed… off? I guess, kinda decent modern rock.
This was a groundbreaking and controversial album at the time - a metal band playing with a symphony? I’ve always thought it was fantastic, even more so now that I’m more familiar with Metallica’s catalog.
Pretty cool sounding female vocal punk/alt rock band.
Cool punk rock sound but vocals can be a little grating sometimes.
Good but def nowhere near as good as Rumours. Seems very individualistic vs the band working as one.
I see the influences to maybe System of a Down and Dropkick Murphy’s and that is -to me- actually a perfect description of DK’s sound. A little manic but makes a statement.
“Feedback” was an absolutely unnecessary track.
I guess this was decent; jazz is just not my thing….
Amazing voice, some of the songs were just a bit too slow for me. Didn’t hear as much piano as I thought there would be; more symphonic than expected.
Mellow singer/songwriter. Generally just an acoustic guitar but a good picker, little bit of a classical/flamenco flair to the picking.
Good rhymes in the first several tracks but feel like Graduation is a better album.
Did not expect to like this with all the horns but ended up being one of the more enjoyable “world sounds” albums I’ve listened to. The tracks didn’t feel like they were the 7/8/9 minutes that they were.
This turned out to be a fun album with notable covers.
I’d heard of this album but never listened to it; was better than expected!
Never realized how kind of punk-rock the Pretenders were.
Rush always ends up being a marginally better listen than I expect.
This was an interesting album; prof rock electronic trance music?
This was a nice surprise to discover; a protest-spirited English rock album. Surprisingly relevant to 2025 politics/society, from 1986.
I’m just not a fan of jazz. Parts of this were ok but at times, it was too manically improvisational with several horns going at once, seemingly not in any discernible rhythm.
This was a fun discovery of 90’s punk pop. Will explore more of the Supergrass catalog!
This was better than I expected. Not as much of a metal hair band caricature as I thought it would be: decent songs.
Was good at the time I listened to it, needing to chill in my drive home from work. Still felt a little eclectic and too improvisational at time for me.
This was a cool Bowie-esque punk rock discovery. Rating it a ‘4’ so it stands out but would really prefer to go with ‘3.5.’
Another fun discovery. Smart lyrics/rhymes, funky beats, overall very enjoyable. Songs were a lot longer than you’d expect but they didn’t feel like it while listening to them.
Starts out hard and attempts to weave throughout, an overtly 80’s sound while always reverting to his more familiar, signature coffee lounge poet persona.
This album sounded far better than I expected Randy Newman to be, though, until further review, I almost legit couldn’t tell if it was overtly racist or satirical. A very pleasant listen and well-written, if not simple Americana.
Kind of a Neil Diamond-y sound? Slow but powerful vocals over ballad-like instrumentation. Some of the lyrics kind of cheesy. Overall, not awful; but not great. Rated 2 but maybe more a 2.5.
Generally a psychedelic soul funk sound, with some deviations into mellow rock. Surprisingly, not something I would voluntarily listen to… Again, a solid 2.5, but rated up to 3 b/c I didn’t hate it.
I can see where the influence for an artist like Tori Amos came from. Vocals were strong, lyrics not so much; very literal/observational, not very deep (IMO).
Interesting discovery. A little obscure sound at start of first track but leveled out to a punk metal rock, female-led vocals.
Surprised by this one! More country than I expected.
A little more repetitive pop than the more lyrically substantive “Royals” and “Team” I’m familiar with, but still a fun listen.
Horns are just not my thing
Orchestral rock sound; was pretty enjoyable to listen to as background music. Might need to re-listen for actual lyrics.
A lot of feedback and just… noise before, during, and/or after some songs but I guess with a name like “Sonic” Youth, that is to be expected. Otherwise, was a decent punk rock listen. I’d prefer a 2.5.
Quirky little album with a wide range of influences/sounds.
Def hear Chappelle Roan all over this album
This was good -definitely an innovative rap sound from the traditional East-coast/West-coast- but wouldn’t consider it ‘great’ aside from a couple hits and new discoveries (“Spaghetti Junction” and maybe “We Luv Deez Hoez”)
Piano-heavy, very slow singer/songwriter. 1 part Hozier, 1 part slower, calmer Nathaniel Rateliffe, 1 part late-Elvis-in-Vegas. Would give it a 1.5 if I could but didn’t absolutely hate it.
It was cool to finally listen to one of the pioneers of hip hop. Had no idea RATM covered Afrika’s ‘Renegades of Funk’ but it totally makes sense.
Lot of hits on this one. Great rock although may e ‘Territorial Pissings’ and ‘Endless, Nameless’ were a little heavy on the screaming, for me.
Cars-esque (?) sound w/ Mick Jagger vocals. Can’t complain about that.
3.5/4.0
Easier 70’s/80’s punk-rock instrumentation w/ Bowie-esque vocals
‘California’ from 1988-ish was not available so listened to ‘Everclear.’ A little more rocking Cure sound.
Some of the beginning tracks were a little repetitive but otherwise good album. Solid 3.5 if I could.
This was ok. I wouldn’t put it above “Vol. 2 - Hard Knock Life”
This album was from 2009 but I honestly could not tell - it sounded straight out of early punk era of late 70’s/early 80’s.
Enjoyable 90’s punk album
Enjoyable listen, though, admittedly, it was more background music as I was cooking with kid’s assistance so was not as attentive to lyrics/sound as I would have liked.
An energetic, female-vocal, early punk (late 70’s) group/album. Musically, it was great, didn’t catch all the lyrics.
Mellow hip hop
Pretty standard classic Christmas songs, with female Motown flair.
Good beats but lyrics are def over-the-top.
Somewhat “industrial” rock.
I don’t get this genre - “R&B Hip-Hop”? The talking lyrics that don’t always rhyme, with the [intentional?] terrible attempt (?) at trying to sing in an alto vocal (think Biz Markie).
Did not think I’d enjoy this as much as I did. Definitely that early hip hop sound.
Interludes were weird but the songs themselves were pretty good guitar rock.
Did not think I would like this, expecting a very bongo-y world music sound but was pleasantly surprised. Sung in native Mali language but the guitar-playing was phenomenal and the overall rhythm and sound was very enjoyable! A solid 3.5, but will round up since I was proven wrong.
Started out very slow acoustic but turned out to be very good.
Opening track very ‘Phantom of the Opera-y’ but got better. Wouldn’t say it’s the best Yes album; meh. 2.5 rating.
Surprising fun listen; sort of a post-Lil’ Kim, pre-Nicki Minaj bridge. Innovative, modern hip-hop sound. 3.5 but going with a 3 because of the violence it suggests.
Gotta love some classic Irish music!
Classic Santana. What more can you say?
I can see the allure of Cave’s sound but it might just have to hit me in the right mood for it, maybe? Melancholy Donovan is the best description (having read about him) I can think of, w/ more operatic strings.
Sort of an Oasis-U2-Robert Smith sound. Solid 3.5.
Probably pretty good jazz music; not at all my thing.
A little heavy at times for me, though I can see the influence it has on more recent punk/rock bands, and thus, their significance.
I get that they more or less put punk on the map but aside from their guitar riffs here, I didn’t really care for any of the vocals.
Can see maybe the influence to Johnny Cash on this traditional cowboy album. Good storytelling in the lyrics.
Never realized how very disco-y his early stuff was; this was no exception. Could maybe rate this a 2.5.
A very minimalist Lucinda Williams/Hole sound, with very forward lyrics. I was pleasantly surprised by this album.
Female-vocal electro-dance
Maybe 3.5
Didn’t realize this had so much of an early Beatles sound. Would prefer to give it a 2.5.
Nature-influenced, industrial, electro trance. Weird. Maybe more of a 2.5.
Solid 3.5 but b/c I like DS in general, bumper up to 4.
Think: Ross Geller’s college band keyboard music. *Some* listen-able moments toward the end of album. Could *maybe* be a 1.5
Modern synth pop. Pretty decent listen instrumentally; don’t know that the lyrics are really something that apply to me/that I would rally around but it sounded great.
Not sure why I didn’t think what this would sound like based on “Tainted Love” but not bad, considering I’m not usually a big fan of 80’s synth pop. “Sex Dwarf” was weird.
My 4th favorite WS album
Strange punk-pop hip hop? It is different, unique. Don’t know that it’s something I would voluntarily pick up and listen to. 2.5 if I could.
Very prog-operatic. Not my thing.
Bossa nova music. Not necessarily something I would voluntarily listen to but good background music at work maybe or for a calm atmosphere. Overall not bad; recognized ‘The Girl From Ipanema.”
Modern, experimental progressive 70’s easy listening…?
Grungy-er Neil; good stuff
Not sure I get the ‘brilliance’ of Kendrick’s lyrics. Kinda just sounded like another thug rap album I grew up listening to in early 2000’s. ‘m.A.A.d city’ stood out as a good track.
I think I have a better appreciation for classic country music because this was pretty good. A lot of similarities to Dolly and June Carter’s sounds.
Quintessential 80’s Pop but with a little more substance lyrically (politically).
Kind of an 80’s undertone. Maybe more of a 2.5
A couple hits (Tiny Dancer and the title track) but otherwise, just meh. 2.5 maybe?
Most musical (not spoken word) Cohen album I’ve heard yet. It was alright. Maybe 2.5
A solid 3.5
Prog/Alt/Experimental Leonard Cohen
2.5-3.0
Not an awful 80’s sound. 2.5.
Not a fan of the high-pitch soul singing. Instrumentation was good.
‘Autobahn’ was a good track; others were kinda just ‘meh.’
Def early punk, though with a certain 80’s pop flair - which is weird since this is from ‘79. Sounded good, but would need to give another listen for the actual lyrics.
Interesting “trance rock(?),” if not a little repetitive at times. Still a good background listen.
This was great; might need to start listening to Wilco. ‘Hoodoo Voodoo,’ and ‘One by One’ were favorites on this one.
This was a fun discovery - formed by 5 American GI’s stationed in 1964 Germany. Very rhythmic, alternative 60’s (but really more of a 50’s) rock sound.
Nice sound, surprising she wasn’t bigger
I hate how much I *didn’t* hate this :-|
Chill, Mexi-influenced (?) singer/songwriter-type music.
Wildly low-fi, underground German percussive noise. The only track that resembled music was ‘Sado-Masodub.’ I had to skip through every track to get through this disaster.
Almost sounds like they’re trying too hard to soundike Metallica? Lyrics are more hell-related and not as deep.
Very Kinks-ish, but not as… engaging?
I just can’t do the improvisational jazz.
No Dagmar Krause albums available other than ‘Babble’ w/ Kevin Coyne. Overall it was good but I think Dagmar alone would be a cross between Susan Sarandon’s ‘Janet’ from RHPS and Ana Gasteyer’s Bobbi Mohan-Culp music teacher character.
A little psychedelic U2-ish mixed with modern alt rock?
Maybe more of a 3.5
Solid 2.5. ‘Plastic’ and ‘Buscando Guayaba’ were catchy but overall, not really my genre.
A little Nick Cave, a little Billy Bragg.
Meh. 2.5
Nice “Jam Funk”
2.5 but because I like them, went with a 3
Run-of-the-mill 90’s alt rock. 2.5
This was a pleasant little discovery; a “British Jefferson Airplane”
Post-punk 80’s pop that was a surprisingly good listen - better than I expected. Could probably listen to more of their catalog.
Great album! You really hear the influence on modern country artists like Miranda Lambert. Guests in this album included Springsteen and Dave Matthews. Solid 3.5 but can’t quite nudge it to a 4 in this rating.
Country Americana sound weaves into British singer-songwriter, Joni Mitchell-like folk. It was good but at times slow. Solid 2.5, but don’t know if Incan go to 3. Upon researching, I think the rest of their catalog might be a little more rock.
First few tracks were good, others, meh. 2nd half of the album slowed up.
Waffling between 3.5/4.0… great flow
Overall pretty good though the unnecessary, excessive strumming/drumming/feedback noise before or after some tracks turned me off to rating it higher. Would be a ‘4’ without that nonsense.
Such nostalgia for this one!
Alt rock from ‘92.
TMR wasn’t available on Spotify so listed to a Beefheart playlist. I get the art of the method but musically, it just sounded like 3 or 4 guys who never once rehearsed as a band. Or ever played an instrument before. At times, they’d catch a rhythm together and run with it but it’d inevitably divulge into individual, chaotic improvisation. I literally could not focus for the whole day at work after listening to this on my drive in, it fucked with me that much. Save yourself and avoid this.
German cabaret singer. Mildly spoken-word at times, but MUCH more melodic than, say, Leonard Cohen or Tom Waits (who incidentally is featured throughout, with Elvis Costello, but I think it is more instrumentally). Not something I would voluntarily go listen to but a nice exploratory discovery. Wish we could rate with 1/2 points - this would be a solid 3.5.
Electro-trance-rock (?) album. 2.5
This was absolutely awful - I had to skip through it. Industrial-electro-synth-noise. The only track that remotely resembled music was ‘AB/7A.’ Everything else was just screeching noise or random, low-fi, conversations that seemed almost accidentally or secretly recorded or just low-fi recorded from a movie/tv show. If I could rate this ‘0’ I would.
Standard 90’s club/dance album. Not bad, just not my thing.
It never dawned on me until Thom Yorke was featured on this album that PJH is the female Thom Yorke.
Solid 3.5 but don’t know if I’d bump it to a 4.
Sinatra with a flamenco flair
New Wave Trance Prog Rock (?) Some very long tracks (11-minute) with repetitive guitar strumming as the engine; to the point it almost became annoying at times with the heightened focus on it.
Discover a new song (‘New York’) that I like, and didn’t realize ‘Walk On’ was from this album. A solid 3.5
Not at all what I expected; doesn’t sound anything at all like radio play tracks like ‘Use Somebody’ or ‘Sex on Fire,’ - it’s more… Modest Mouse-like alternative…? Prolly more like a 2.5, but rounded up to maybe come back and give it another listen.
Jazz/Lounge singer from ‘57. Vocals are strong, just not my thing.
This almost sounded more like Kings of Leon than the KOL I listened to 3 albums ago; at times a little more o sure-sounding.
A little too emo/morose for me
Decent metal rock, a little heavy for me
Good world music find; African artist. Instrumentation was great; vocals can get a little shouty at times, but otherwise very melodic. Tracks are 5:00+.
I know she has an iconic voice and the music is beautiful, but just not my thing.
Can’t my put my finger on what this genre is… R&B/Chill Hip Hop? Solid 2.5
Mellower Nirvana
Cool electronica find
Now this is some [world?] jazz I liked - had more… structure to it, without the wild improvisation.
This is a great sounding album. “Bittersweet Symphony” is not representative of the rest of the album; it more 90’s psych rock than stringed trance rock. Solid 3.5 but will bump to a 4 b/c I was pleasantly surprised.
As someone who, historically has not been a fan of LH, this was better than I expected,
3.5 if I could
Rapid fire, albeit somewhat generic, early punk rock. 2.5
Not awful; a decent range of sounds. Def sounds like Beyoncé at times. Could absolutley do without all the “interludes” - just don’t ‘get’ those, on any album.
Very synth-heavy Devo/Cars-esque 80’s trance pop rock. For 3 or 4 songs, I thought “this all sounds an awful lot like that song ‘Cars.’ And then ‘Cars’ came on.
Now I get a bunch of the references in Cornershop’s ‘Brimful of Asha.’
I now hear a lot of the influences from some of the more obscure stuff I’ve listened to here. Beck packages it all up into a more listen-able album.
