Out of Step

Minor Threat are massively influential on punk/hardcore. This was their only album and so I see why it was on this list, and the critical consensus is that they were becoming more adventurous with their musical structures and reflecting on their own thematic concerns on contributions. But, really, it is their early singles that wrote the playbook for hardcore (esp. straight edge) and should be the required listening. I am glad I listened to this, but don't feel the need to ever listen again. (I find hardcore fun live, but find recorded hardcore inessential).

Yeah... I can hear the influence this had on certain punk bands I was into for a short time in high school. So I can appreciate it, but mostly I find it irritating.

Pounding down a couple cans of lager while listening to this feels more than a little wrong, but perhaps calling this an album while clocking in at under 22 minutes is wrong too? It's been a busy weekend so I'm not going to complain about the brevity today. It does raise a good question about what constitutes an album and what separates it from an EP though. Number of tracks? Running time? Some kind of combination of the two? All that aside, I'm generally a fan of hardcore punk, and I have nothing but respect for Ian Mckaye. He might just be the most authentic punk that ever lived. Guess it depends on your definition of punk. To me it's more about idealism than nihilism though, so I'd vote for Ian Mckaye over Sid Vicious any day.

I like the general ethos and sound but there wasn't a track that I was like "hell ya this is the one". Hard to rate really, it's between a 3 and a 4 for me but since I didn't gravitate towards a specific song I'll downgrade to 3.

Hardcore punk comes to spit in your face again, but this one cares while it's pushing you over in the pit. It recognises that we've all been kicked down - it's time to help each other up. Best Tracks: Betray; Look Back and Laugh; Little Friend

Amazing how you can make an album under 22 minutes long and it still feels perfectly satisfying. Also, whether Ian Mackaye likes it or not, I do detect a hint of what would become emo here...

This was fun. Not the biggest fan of punk vocals sometimes, but this album had some rocking tunes and was fun through out it's very short length. Given I've gotten some really long albums recently, that's a huge plus.

It's cool, a very specific genre of punk that I'm not the most famialr with to be honest.

Very foundational sound for later punk, particularly The Offspring and Rage. Some clever instrumentation and irony as well.

Decent punk album that clearly served as an inspiration for later bands. Nothing overly standout. Very short album at only about 21 minutes, but on brand for punk songs.

Okay I get it. You put your ears in a blender and you power it with angst and rage for around twenty minutes. I get it. But that doesn't mean that I enjoy it. Still, it's remarkably better than the Circle Jerks album that I got a while ago. And that closing track is a beast!

This would have been a great gig in the early 80s. The album itself is one speed: full pace, top gear. It's a short run time but more than enough to listen to. I'm left a little unsure about what just happened, but I quite like that.

Short, too trashy

Very shouty, fast guitar rock - sort of post-punk. Nothing special, why is it on this list?

I like this album a lot, but it doesn't have any of my favorite Minor Threat songs. I prefer the other version of Out of Step, and in general, the material on the Minor Threat and In My Eyes EPs. One of those or one of their compilation albums would've been a better choice IMO.

Apparently these guys invented Straight Edge. I'm not sure I would want to put that on my resume, but we've all got to forge our way in this world, and they found something that works for them, which is nice. Best track: Cashing In

Listening to this was like going to a theme park and instead of going on the big thrill rides with massive queues, you visit the rollercoaster that's smaller and more simplistic but fun anyway. 22 minutes seemed short when first inspected but its the perfect amount for this punk rocket of an album.

Heavy but short punk

Genre: Hardcore Punk 3/5 A pivotal movement in the hardcore scene, a hodgepodge of former DC acts themselves, DC act Minor Threat put out what is widely considered one of the most essential releases in the genre. Punk rock had gone somewhat mainstream by the early 80s, but DC took it and made it heavier, louder, and more in your face. Teen angst at its fucking best. While you certainly can hear nearly every group that came after them, whether it be other hardcore DC acts like Fugazi, or later pop punk legends like Green Day and My Chemical Romance, songs like Sob Story and Little Friend are big time, goofy highlights that show the best the genre has to offer. However, this 22-minute barrage was a bit grating at times for me, and while I understand that’s the point, that certainly doesn’t make it more enjoyable. Essential listen, though.

Classic punk rock. Short, fast songs of every permutation of the same 5 guitar cords. Yelling and screaming angry nonsense, with a drummer that is among best in the genre. If you have 20 minutes you can finish the album. Depends what you think about punk - love it or hate it, this is a solid representation!

Frantic and short. so short in fact (21 mins) I listened to the compliation of their initial EPs called "First Two Seven inches" just to clock an extra 19 mins! Proper punk

Punk que gustó tomando en cuenta que no me gusta el punk. Por otro lado, es ruido agradable y listo, parece una gran canción que no estorba y ya, eso sí con mucha energía.

Muy raro disco, especialmente puesto en el contexto de ser de 1983… Quizá adelantado a su tiempo, en una época donde el Punk todavía no tenía lo hardcore y quizá los hizo sonar todavía más raro de lo que son. Noto como pudieron ser influencia a Green Day, NOFX y muchas otras cosas de Punk gringo que vinieron después.

Good old school punk

Aye it's fun, it's good, not biggest fan of vocals, but guitar work's quality.

Now this was fun. Listened to it while making myself some lunch and the record was almost done by the time I sat down to eat. Some classic fast, high-energy punk stuff. Can't go wrong with it.

There have been some stinkers for me this week so I'm excited to see this album pop up. I need some energy, and I've heard Minor Threat was a huge influence in the early punk scene in the US. This didn't disappoint, it's a pretty short album with 9 songs that are around 2-3 minutes each. The album comes in fast and hard, and blasts by, this almost reminds me of early Thrash metal in a way with how the instruments and played. The singer is yelling and swearing, and generally pissed off then you hear about the straight edge life and the lyrics of Cashing Out were awesome. I had fun with this one, would definitely listen to it again.

Had never heard of this band before. But had heard their influence through Greenday. Big time.

Sounds like they did it all in one take, and didn't throw anything away. I get that it's the genre, but why?

Love listening to early genre music, because it sounds so basic but you can hear where every subsequent band found at least part of their sound. Imagine Green Day listening to this and then making their early EPS.

This is an album from my youth. Ian MacKaye being a big hero of mine. If I listened to it today without hearing it in my teenage years I don't know what I would rate it. Because of its influence on me its a easy 5.

Obviously this stuff isn’t my bag. Too youthful and angry for a man of my vintage. Could appreciate some of it though!

Ah, Out of Step. This album was my anger management therapy back during my teen years. I still come back to it from time to time when I'm in a particular kind of mood. This is really the epitome of a perfect hardcore punk album, full of wonderful little nuggets of burning intensity. It's brutal, blistering, raging, snotty, and entertaining as hell. Not a bad song on here. Fave Songs: Betray, Cashing In, Out of Step, Think Again, Sob Story

I was a bit surprised to find this album on here. I like punk rock but Minor Threat is just OK - I've never been into hardcore or straight edge.

I never listened to Minor Threat in High School even though I was into punk rock - if I did this album probably would have changed my life.

Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Betray, Think Again, Sob Story, Cashing In Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Under 25 minutes :') I would kiss them on the mouth but I feel like they would beat me to death with empty bottles of non-alcoholic beer. I keep waiting for these punk albums to stop being so good but they just keep kicking ass.

Pretty solid rock anthem.

Classic hardcore punk! For my money, though, one of their compilations would be a better pick because it'll feature stuff from their self-titled and "In My Eyes" as well. All three releases are short enough that the compilations make for a better-suited experience overall, but I can't complain too much. Anyway, it does everything about punk so well. It's got attitude, edge, energy, and not stick around for more than 30 minutes. What's more punk than that? Also, Cashing In is an all-timer closer. Great record.

The amount of pioneering Minor Threat accomplished in their short time together is amazing. Bigger fan of the first two 7”‘s but this album slaps hard. Fave Tracks : “Out of Step” “Betray”

Fine, good, 1983 hardcore. No hits for me to remember, but the skill is there.

I listened to a little hardcore punk back in the 80s when it was more prevalent, so I wouldn't be surprised if I've heard these guys or this album before, I just have no memory of it. They are a good example of the sound of that time and genre. They play real tight. It's a bit same-sounding and too thrashy at times for me, but it's performed and recorded really well. Not the kind of music I listen to anymore, so I doubt I'll revisit this one.

Listened to about half of the first five songs. It's punk rock. I hate punk rock. The guitars are actually pretty decent by themselves, but the vocals are so very atrocious that there's really no saving this one.

Another trim range of music and vocals. Lots of influence over later bands such as early Offspring

Didn't know Minor Threat would be on here very happy to see it 😁 never really given them time of day but yeh, OG punk so mint. Turns out this is their first album, so, before the Straight Edge track. Not as good as the 2nd album. 4/5 for being OGs

Men, även om detta är ett klassiskt punkalbum, och har varit viktigt för genren (vilket jag kan RESPEKTERA), så är det ganska svårt att lyssna på. Det är energiskt, snabbt, och argt, men avsaknaden av tydligare melodier gör att låtarna flyter ihop i varandra och blir smått enerverande. Tyvärr. Velade mellan en 1:a eller 2:a. Bästa låt: Look, Back & Laugh, bra riff i introt, en tillstymmelse till melodi.

качево отцы валят. Это, конечно, ещё не Фугази, но Маккей уже ебёт всё и вся своей необузданной агрессией. Запоминающихся хуков, конечно, не особо завезли, но здесь и не про это. Просто лютый угар, дичайший гитарный рёв и годные кричалки с редкими, но солидными проигрышами. Не пятёра, конечно, я всё-таки не особо большой фан хардкора, но на 7/10 вполне по эмоциям отбилось, вживую вероятно это вообще пиздец был.

А ведь отличный альбом. Возможно, первый хардкор-панк альбом в моей жизни, пусть и миньон. Ранее думал, что хардкор-панк - это то, что выходит, когда злая молодёжь не умеет играть митол. То есть нечто неполноценное. Но тут ощущается некоторая целостность, самобытность. Интересные композиции, яркие хуки, славное качество записи. Басовые партии радуют, в основном тем, что я их слышу, не вслушиваясь. Гитарные партии для панка тех лет также звучат довольно продвинуто. Вокал на себя одеяло не перетягивает, просто гармонично достраивает композиции. На самом деле мог бы поставить 5. Но задумался, хотел бы я кинуть альбом на плеер? На самом деле нет. Даже дальше знакомиться ныне особенно настроения нет. Но не признать заслуг не могу. Они там ещё вроде за отказ быдлятских привычек топят, такое одобряем. И обложка вполне годная.

This just isn't for me. I like the guitars and the rhythmic drive just fine, but the vocals - which, yes, I know are 'punk' - drive me up the wall. I can't do it and I can't even give an okay rating for historical value. This sucked.

Pretty good punk sound. Surprisingly explicit for the time, which is fine but it's just surprising. The flow does break down into screaming and yelling at times, which is a bit of a turn off.

Thought this was solid, can see Green Day being influenced by this band.

Definitely more my speed. I hear Hüsker Dü in there. Not sure who was influencing who. Zen Arcade was out around the same time.

Moraš bit u tom mindsetu ljutnje, nabrijanosti i agresije jer za šta su većinom hc punk albumi (u ovom slučaju EP) nego za to. Minor Threat je veoma poznat ovako općenito, a i dosta je utjecao na opstanak/stvaranje/održavanje scene iako imaju samo 3 EPa, bez albuma! Al men ti je to sve isto, više manje.

Imo sam razdoblje kad se minor threat roko uz punks not dead bedževe na torbi.

Como que el punk crudo y rudo nunca ha sido muy mi onda, no conozco tantas bandas ni sé nada de la escena. Escuchando este álbum, pues no hubo nada que me hiciera pensar en la gran influencia musical que de seguro tuvo esta banda (que no conocía), pero ya investigando vi que al parecer sí. Con todo esto lo único que quiero decir es que no tengo las bases para evaluarlos jajajja, pero al parecer fueron chidos.

Doesn't take long for fatigue to set in when an album is as bombastic as this. Simply too much going on to recommend.

This is the music you make when you have a singer with no singing abilities, a drummer who’s just learnt the 4 4 rock beat and guitarists who’ve not moved past the most basic of power chords. It’s the absolute maximum needed for making punk...and this contribution is the at the lower end of the spectrum. Give it a miss...1 Star!

Most of the way through Out of Step, I had a grin on my face. It has all the aggression you could want in a hardcore band, but the stop start rhythms, angular compositions, lack of cliches, turn on a dime performances, and thoughtful, angry lyrics give some nourishment for the soul and intellect as well. It doesn't hurt that, for hardcore, there's actually quite a bit of variety in the grooves and tempos. If I have a minor complaint, it's that I couldn't understand all the words, but that's kind of a given in hardcore.

It likely comes as no surprise this isn't my punk cup of tea. Reason number 1: one dimensional anger. Reason number 2: not a single melody, just yelling. I had a terrible temper as a 5 year old. I punched a couple holes in my bedroom walls. My parents had a tough time knowing how to handle it. Who knows why I was angry. It generally felt like some form of injustice, but who knows what specifically. I probably didn't get something I wanted and lost my temper frequently. I think 5 year old Ashton would've loved Minor Threat and whatever vague injustices they're getting ornery about. C- Postscript: straight edge is funny as hell. Especially violent vegan straight edge shows at noon on a Sunday.

My review which embodies the soul of this album: Not bad. Fun. Fast paced. Tight. One note. Short. Roots of Punk Rock/Hardcore. Lacks strong melodies. 2.

I'm not sure what made these boys so angry but it's been a while since I've seen a 22 minute album over nine tracks that is punk rock. After clash and ramones, I don't know why anyone would try to replicate that but these fellas gave it their best. Unfortunately, their best, just like their album and art, was out of step.

Pues mucha furia en este disquito de paaaaank. Vi, según dicen los que saben, que fue muy influyente y pues lo entiendo. O sea los rifs, la batería, todo me suena a lo que luego sonaban bandas no necesariamente panks. Yo creo que las que me gustaron fueron "It Follows", "Think Again" y "Out of Step", porque luego sí se siente uno bien en discordancia con el mundo (?). 8/10

At first I thought it was just a punk album, but seeing that it was one of the first bands to set the trend it gave it a new meaning to it, for what it meant it deserves some kudos

This was quite irrelevant but! affer all those hideous 80's synths, I think it deserves a better rank just for being different.

A 21 minute album, what a breath of fresh air. This is the kind of punk I like: high energy, high angst, and a surprising amount of talent in the (otherwise garage-quality) instrumentals. Crazy that this is Minor Threat's only album, considering I recognize the name, and perhaps even crazier that this was released in 1983. The influence that this had on rock for the next decade or two thereafter is palpable. Favorite tracks: Look Back and Laugh, Sob Story, No Reason, Out of Step. Album art: Simple but effective. A black sheep out of step with the herd. Plus the crude illustration of the black sheep opposed to the fine drawing of the rest captures the nature of punk music itself really well. 4/5

The only thing that makes me love this album is that it was their only studio album. For me it’s a kind of sophomoric punk which is I guess the point of punk.

Couldn't even finish this god awful

9 songs, 21 mins. They come in, trash the place, then leave before you get a chance to form an opinion. Maybe that was the whole idea of punk, 'quick get it done before anyone realises!' It's all basic punk, enjoyable for a little bit. They had a great band name, but I never understood why they're considered better than lots of other punk.

I found this to be a unique eye-opener to the world of punk rock music. The sound is completely out of my own range of music interests, however I enjoyed the record, and felt that the short length (23 minutes) made up for a cohesive body of work. While it's not something I would personally listen to, I enjoyed listening and reading about how this album has become such a landmark within its genre.

This was a lot cooler than expected... I always figure this early HC stuff is just amateur noise, and it kinda is but it's catchy enough that it doesn't matter. better than black flag 4/5.
