So dreamy, but never to the point of feeling like it blew itself away; it remained fluid but thick and sweet, like floating in a pool of honey. The songwriting and production echoed a lot of the same notes as Fleet Foxes for me while also calling to mind Phil Spector and his wall of sound, and of course it definitely had the influence from the synth-rock sounds of Disintegration-era Cure. This hit a lot of sweet spots for me.
On another note (or perhaps because of these notes), damn would this make some good boninβ music. I gotta go get my wife.

This record is the exact sound of all indie anti-pop mainstream records in the 2010s. It takes me back to being 25, wanting to get drunk, party, and listen to anything but this style of music. I donβt dislike it, I just canβt have fun with it. And nothing about this feels special or groundbreaking.

I can sort of understand why people might like this, it's really not for me though. It doesn't really do anything, or go anywhere. There's no passion in here, it's like they're going through the motions in an effort to sound cool and they're falling way short. Not for me.

Explain to me again why there are no Yo La Tengo records on this list.
Also, they do a bit of lifting of βNo Other Oneβ by Weezer on the first track. Tell me Iβm not the only one who hears it.
This is the kind of record that your βindieβ friend wonβt shut the fuck up about for a month and then they never mention Beach House ever again. Itβs aesthetically pleasing on the ears, but lacks substance or any sense of urgency.
Indie Rock used to be cool. Now, itβsβ¦this.

This sounds a bit like the moody musical sections of some TV show, where the characters stare into the distance in the rain pondering what they've done. Not that that's a bad thing, really liked it.

Guess I woke up on the unforgiving side of the bed, because this Teen Dream was a bit of a nightmare. But it's as advertised; it's sung in the key of "maudlin teen." Personally, I'd rather listen to Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" on repeat than listen to this album again. It's a no from me, dawg.

Never heard of Beach House before and this album was a good introduction.
I liked the harmonics between the vocalists and the melodies as well, not to mention the the guitar riffs.
Listened while I work and the songs did a great job of a chill background music.
A solid 8/10.

There is stuff here to like but they eventually work against themselves as the songs progress. And that is for every song, to the point that it feels like its all just one song. The vocals are interesting in timbre but there is a lack of variation and it becomes monotonous, the orchestration and arrangement does the same. Much like a dream it all flows together and I have. hard time remembering any of it. Maybe thatβs the point.

I love Beach House's approach to using low-end synthesizers and other electronic instruments, I believe they said something like "find a crappy keyboard, and find the one setting on it that sounds good and ignore the rest". I had no listened to this particular album, but I knew of Silver Soul which is super good, peak Beach House. The semi-lofi soft melancholy singing and song progressions is millennial sad in a bottle. I think it still holds up. Legrand's vocals are still unique to my ears, they feel very honest. I hear elements of drone, shoegaze, but of course that sparkly indie-pop of the 2010s. I love the detuning on Norway, which I've heard as well. There is a bit of a lull in the middle of the album for me though, the first 3 tracks are 4s but the others are completely ignorable for me, unfortunately. I really want to give it a 4 but as an album it is not consistent in quality, so it's a 3.5 down to 3.

Lots of the songs by Beach House sound very similar. So I think the album is cohesive. I was able to listen to the whole thing, but largely forgot about it while listening.
Then something happened, the streaming service got to the end of the album and another song came up and the style was similar but the singing was better. I was like "ooh who is this singer, they should get her to do more songs" but it was a different band and album entirely ("The Trip by Still Corners")

Beach House have really sneakily become one of my favourite bands of all time and this album is so so good getting to hear them a little bit earlier on a litte rougher around the edges and adhering to a sound that was less distinct but they were still capable of producing soundscapes like Silver Soul that showed what they'd go on to make later in their career. Just really touching and amazing and lush and emotional

Iβm late to the table, discovering Beach house only now; they hit the sweet spot for project listening.
βWhen consumed, as intended, as a full album, their sound took on the entrancing and metronomic quality of an EKG machine. β¦Relentless innovation is a prerequisite for survival in a streaming era that so fiercely values novelty. But the poise and obstinate evenness of Beach Houseβs catalogue offer a rejoinder to our obsession with reinvention.

This is a record that I can't really imagine anyone having a strong reaction to one way or the other. It's so aggressively bland. Like dry white toast - you might not want to eat it but if that's all there is, it'll be fine yet unmemorable. I can't really pick out anything to comment on, it's all just...fine. Vocals? It's got them. Drums? Yep. Guitars and bass? Sure. Synths? A lot. But like, none of it stands out at all. Honestly I don't get why it has such high ratings. I guess because it is put together well and isn't offensive in any way? I don't know, it just seems too safe to me. 2.5/5 but I guess I'll round up because I've heard worse albums?

Teen Dream
Another βdreamβ album.
Iβve never heard of Beach House or this album, so had no clue what to expect, from the name I thought it might be some kind of Junior Senior style fun party music but itβs not a million miles away from The War on Drugs, but also a more restrained and melodic My Bloody Valentine with a bit of the XX. It also reminds me very strongly of something else, but I canβt work out what. Something like Turin Breaks, but not Turin Breaks.
Anyway Iβm not entirely sure that this works for me. I liked the first two tracks, particularly Silver Soul with that lovely slide guitar, and while none of the rest of the tracks are bad, I started to find the slightly aloof, studied 2010s indie-ness of it rather cold and unmoving. While I could appreciate a lot of it, the construction of the tracks, with some very nice sounding guitar and bass, and the overall shimmery vibe they were going for, I donβt think the songs are actually that strong. Itβs not a direct comparison, but for an album from a similar time in a slightly similar-ish genre, The War on Drugs album is far better at fusing musical texture with songs and melodies, and as a result itβs a better album, one that you want to come back to.
Overall, not bad but not really for me, there is a decent amount to admire, but not much to make me want to come back to it. 3.

Another from my seemingly large collection of "albums from the 2000s I own but have never listened to". And it's quite good! Somewhere between Arcade Fire and Fleet Foxes, with the washed-out vocal/guitar/organ sound characteristic of that period. I bet Mark is unimpressed

Hmm, sorry, what was that? I seem to have drifted off for a bit...
I like her voice, and I hear elements of Mazzy Star, Eliot Smith and Jeff Buckley in their singing and songwriting, but nothing quite a tuneful or memorable as any of those artists. What it reminds me of most is a mix of Mercury Rev and Eno's Music for Airports.
I was surprised to read in the wikipedia page that, according to Alex Scally "There's very little reverb on the record". Really? Compared to what? I feel like they spent a goodly portion of their recording budget on very expensive digital reverbs.
It's super chill, and pleasant in the background. 2.5 stars, rounding up.

I must be a dreary millennial because I appreciate the lugubrious tone of this album. Itβs a general album for a generation that is worse off than the previous, continuously blamed for their parentsβ decisionsβwho gave us participation trophies?
If a part of you doesnβt understand the mood of this album, then you might just be too old to understand this sadness is generally in our blood along with all the micro-plastics; like it or not.

It reminds me of if my life was being filmed in a movie and after an all night rager where you just party hard till the sun comes up and everyone is passed out on the floor and some people including myself had a blast and got super fucked up and some people had an emotional fallout from the party and the camera does an aerial footage shot and fades away into a commercial break for femine hygiene products is what Beach House reminds me of. By the way the film airs on MTV tonight at 9pm

Objectively there's nothing wrong with the music. But I hate this. I hate the way of singing, the tempo is too fast to be relaxed and too slow to be anything else, the drums are too laid back, there's way too much reverb for my taste. I'm pretty sure this music is supposed to be relaxing, but it annoys me. Makes me want to punch them in the face to get them going. Least hated song: Norway
