Figure 8
Elliott SmithIt’s so classic. Drove to Los Angeles this summer just to take a selfie in front of the mural that made up the album cover.
It’s so classic. Drove to Los Angeles this summer just to take a selfie in front of the mural that made up the album cover.
Side 1 is perfect. Side 2 is good.
More interesting than good? Does it’s reputation destroy any chance to listen and enjoy objectively? This isn’t a 5. It’s not as good as Wish You Were Here.
Don't deny the greatness. Don't deny the sadness. Don't deny the beauty.
Spectacular. Original. Menacing.
It’s so classic. Drove to Los Angeles this summer just to take a selfie in front of the mural that made up the album cover.
Run to the Hills is the best metal vocal ever.
My first exposure to live Killer. It was good not great, not quite essential listening, but still enjoyable.
One of my all time favorite albums. I feel the earth move has been ringing in my head since getting this pick.
A favorite album in this house.
Was good. I don’t know why I haven’t dropped the needle on it sooner. But the songs were memorable 90s bedroom pop/
Not my jam. Their earlier work has inspired me more.
I never gave this a shot because I hated how their name so clearly aped Rocket from the Tombs. But it’s nice solid well crafted mid-90’s alt rock. Crunchy and tasty.
Maybe Frank’s last truly great album?
I don’t know... it was okay. But I feel like I’ve heard that record a thousand times before from other bands.
Overblown. Oversold. Boomer BS. Our House is classic and the best song on the album.
Excellent rock. Meh jazz. Superior songwriting.
Goth touchstone. So good.
Love this. Not background music.
I want this to grab me. But it hasn’t. I’ll put Portishead on first.
Not as classic as the mid- 70s run of Fela Kuti albums, but tasty nonetheless.
JUST GREAT.
Goofy 70s prog noodling. Not my thing at all. I can’t even judge if it is good or not.
Nice rave. Brought me right back to club days.
Really?
Really?
It’s a grime album. Not my go to scene. It’s good. But I’m not schooled in this genre at all.

It was really good!! I don’t know I expected less. But I found this super.
Fantastic. So good. And picked on his birthday.
Listened to this so much at the turn of the century.
100Gecs before 100Gecs was a thing.
One of my favorite albums.
Wow. That was my favorite album of 2014.
60s trash rock at its finest and dumbest. Sublime.
Underrated. Under discussed. Probably because the artist is a woman. It’s a great album. As good as anything her male UK peers were making at the time.
Brooklyn Indie. I’m supposed to like it. But it sounds like music I’m supposed to like.
Stone cold classic.
I can get on board with this weird synth post punk thing.
Classic. Love this album.
It’s okay. Chamber pop. Maybe on another day it would hit me. Today isn’t that day.
Classic. My foray into post rock. I love this album.
I want to hate this. But I don’t. Even though it’s such stupid music.
Great!! Garage rock!!
Such a perfect album.
Wow. Just wow.
Good. Good not great.
Wow. I didn’t expect much, but found this early metal album to be exceptionally good.
Perfect. A perfect album.
I love this record. It’s nice to revisit it.
Effed up and unhinged. I want to hate it but it is compelling.
Sublime.
Really good. Oddly reminded me of Prince, just in the experimental nature of it.
Soooo gooood.
Thoroughly enjoyable. Unheralded classic.
I’ve listened to this a million times.
Listened a couple weeks ago.
Easily my favorite SY album. Maybe not their best, but still classic.
2 perfect songs. The rest is also great. 4.5
Good Times is perfect.
Side 1 is perfect. Side 2 is good.
Very good. Wonder what it sounded like when it came out.
It’s so cold and claustrophobic and incredible.
Sounds like we’ll executed mid-90s Britpop.
It’s so ambitious and largely successful. He’s a very worthy Wilbury.
Energy. Some good songs. But did feel like it was missing... something.
I love Fugazi. Only wish I’d seen them live.
Great while I’m listening. But then it’s gone.
How have I missed this one? Never heard of it. And I love drum and bass. It’s very good.
Good to very good. That first wave of Wu solo releases was quite special.
So good. Have listened to this for decades.
I didn’t give this a chance when it came out. But it’s incredible. Like a pop fleet foxes.
A couple perfect songs. Well produced.
Not listening, have heard it enough. It’s perfect, quintessential 80’s metal.
Good, but that first song is overrated.
Mayor of Turtle River!!
Good but not essential bad brains.
Strong. I need to explore his music a lot more.
That was the album I needed today.
Part of their mid/late 60s stretch of perfect albums.
Perfect.
Very enjoyable. Her voice is captivating.
It's good. But it's average Pet Shop Boys. It doesn't shine.
Excellent, hard driving dance pop.
It's okay. Not what I wanted to listen to today.
It's incredible. Astonishing. and thoroughly underheralded. This is going to get listened to again in this house.
Very nice.
Gold.
A very good album. Several great songs.
Was totally ready to write this off, it started slow. But damn if the second half didn't totally impress.
Solid. Bold. Aggressive. I'd give a 3.5.
Grand. Seemingly simple but not, sophisticated pop. Almost a 5.
A 5.
This has not aged as well as expected. It doesn’t thrill so much as meander. Bummer of a listen.
Very similar to the Randy Newman I had a couple days prior. Strong lyrics and melodies, singular voice.
It never gets old or fails to excite.
I wish I were a more astute judge of reggae and dub. But I like this a great deal.
I feel like I have overlooked his talent and artistry for far too long. This work is different than his soundtrack stuff. It feels both personal and filled with dedication to craft.
Yawn
Underwhelming. Plodding. Even boring.
The artistry of her poetry is magnificent. It transcends its pretensions, and it perfectly suited to the folk rock backing.
I was surprised and very much enjoyed this film noirish album.
Spectacular. Original. Menacing.
3.5. I want to like this more, but can’t seem to find the inspiration.
I remember liking this album a lot when it was released. Now, it just feels a little cold and lifeless, more craft than passion.
Good first half but fades on Side B.
Is this good? Essential? What differentiates this from a thousand other roots rock records?
Very good, perhaps overrated.
Why does Paul McCartney get lambasted for Maxwell’s Silver Hammer and O Bla Di when this is an entire album of that shizz?
It’s good. The songs are strong. I just wish there were more changes in tone. It gets a little samey after a while.
Often quite thrilling.
Don't deny the greatness. Don't deny the sadness. Don't deny the beauty.
Maybe the greatest album of that decade?
This might be my favorite album.
It starts so strong, and then drags and gets too midnight stormy.
3 perfect songs, the others are equally great.
It’s excellent. Deserved of many many repeat listens.
I like a lot, though I think Endtroducing and Donuts are both better.
How is this essential? This is easily the most dated album I’ve gotten so far.
Classic Americana.
A little too much of the same thing. Tones, tempos, etc. No choruses or hooks.
They opened for U2 on the Achtung Baby tour with this record.
One of the best albums ever. One of my favorite albums. Every song is great.
Very good. Very Dolly.
Perfect just for the first song, the title track.
Solid front to back. Amazing that Rod Stewart was doing both this and his solo career so stellar at the same time.
Surprisingly diverse. Very good.
What a ridiculous album. It didn’t seem very good. The songs were trash and it was very underproduced. Will need to read up on it to see what historical merits it has.
It was enjoyable. I didn't listen to it loudly enough. I bet it's a banger at high volumes. 3.5.
Almost a 5. Such impeccable compositions and production.
It’s very good. Very much a “Bowie” album. Some of the middle is not up to the same caliber as the classic songs on this record.
I need to do a mix of Tom Waits, Marianne Faithfull and Kurt Weill.
I don’t get the appeal. It’s okay. But it’s not fatboy slim or the propellers or chemical brothers. It’s not that interesting.
While this feels like lesser LCD Soundsystem, it’s still fantastic LCD Soundsystem.
Too much of a good thing? Not enough great? 75 mins of prog noodling with flashes of brilliance makes this a 3.5.
Solidly strong throughout. I love the consistent tone of the synth. Great songs. And Cars is such a masterpiece. 4.5
Solid, strong album of mid-80s UK slash college rock. 3.5.
I guess you had to be there. It's good and all, but it doesn't feel like some turning point in music like the music writers make it out to be. Great lyrics, some wonderful licks and passages, but the songs themselves meander too much.
Stunning. Amazing. Love this album.
A 5. An unqualified masterpiece. It's just so damn good.
It's one of the most perfect albums ever. There isn't a bum note. No song that isn't classic. It's astonishing that it is a debut record.
Powerful, primal, in your face rock. Sheela-Na-Gig is just the most focal point of this amazing album. 4.5.
More interesting than good? Does it’s reputation destroy any chance to listen and enjoy objectively? This isn’t a 5. It’s not as good as Wish You Were Here.
Next tier EC.
Meh.
It's a very good album. One of the classics from the old school era.
This is a very solid listen. The live crowd feel adds to the vibe.
British metal. So good.
Ur-neo-soul. Have loved this record since day one. 4.5.
It’s so good. Even the deep cuts are fantastic, but the singles are otherworldly.
Upper tier Bjork. Still an acquired taste. 3.5.
I've always loved this, and this love has only deepened over time.
I mean, it rocks, and it's tuneful. But it feels rather Pitchfork-y, and maybe not something that will resonate in 20 years. I might listen to again to see if I'm wrong.
I really enjoyed this, even though I don't really know anything about this band. It reminded me of more tuneful Krautrock.
Too much of a good thing?
It only felt very good, not essential.
It’s okay. I think they did better work. I also think this album is overrated by most.
I’d still rather listen to Sgt Pepper’s.
It’s very good. Hints of disco. She aged into the late 70’s nicely after some stellar early albums. 3.5.
I guess you had to be there. It didn’t do much for me. But Alice never has.
Emperial phase Joni. She could do no wrong.
Can I just say I love this album but have no idea if it’s good or not?
Don’t know what genre it is, but it’s so good.
A warranted classic. These guys don’t get as much praise as they deserve. 4.5.
That's some good shit. That wonderful dirty dirty rock.
Fantastic.
I wish every album on this site was as breathtaking as this one.
It’s great. Not quite a 5. The cover art is a 6.
It’s stunning. So raw and powerful. There isn’t much to it, yet it’s everything.
The first half is beyond perfect. Up to Hoover Dam, the greatest batch of songs from Bob Mould ever. The second half is very good. If I Can’t Change Your Mind is the best pop song he ever wrote. 4.5.
Good, yet not strong feelings regarding this album. Tomorrow I won’t remember anything about it. A pleasant enough spin. 3.5.
A richer, more memorable experience than moon safari. 4-4.5.
Powerful, dank and dirty. 4.5.
A favorite album. My biased opinion finds this album sublime, joyous, perfect. Even better in the DLX version.
Good, perhaps oversold by critics? It feels far less essential than singles comps. 3.5.
Not sure how I never got around to appreciating this the way I did their first two albums. The production crackles, Chuck D is forceful, and Flav is used just enough. 4.5.
Okay? A fine listening experience but not something i really seek out. 3.5.
Love this album. Eminently danceable. And thought provoking. This album got me through that summer. 4.5.
Okay? Essential? No.
This was very good. Going to revisit this. Looking forward to doing so.
fIREHOSE was as good a crawling from the wreckage of the Minutemen as one could expect. 3.5
Utterly brilliant. Fantastic. Running Up That Hill and Cloudbursting are gamechanging songs.
I mean, how can you go wrong with a record that has a song called “Sex Dwarf”? It’s more goodish than great. 3.5.
They hit a gloomy sonic vibe and stuck with it, effectively over the entire album. “A Forest” is the best of the bunch.
I don’t think Scott Walker is an acquired taste. You either love him or hate him. While I prefer his compilations of his work to the individual albums, this is still a strong, worthy listen.
I have read about this album for years, like it’s some big thing, a white girl from England comes to Memphis and sings gritty R&B. Big whoop. It’s overrated and undercooked. 3.5, because the musicians are always great, Dusty is a fine enough singer, but it isn’t the classic they make it out to be.
It thrashes, which is what it set out to do.
The title track is great, and the rest of the songs are good, but the album just starts to sound the same from one song to the next.
Without context, this rough collection of underwritten ditties is a 2. But knowing the whole and why, this becomes a 4.5.
This one doesn’t get love because of albums from Paul’s Boutique onward, but that’s unfortunate. Licensed to Ill kicks ass. It takes real skill to be that bratty.
Weird record. It’s poorly recorded. The songs aren’t all that good. The band is bar band grade. The singer has more chutzpah than talent. And yet it’s still oddly compelling. It holds together. 4.5.
Solid funk with a couple perfect mid-70s dirtier cuts.
A great album for its time, but it’s time was long ago?
I don’t seek it out, but like it when I listen to it. Nice chill club or after party music.
Pretty outstanding white boy blues. Great for shining a light back on the blues, now go back and listen to the Chess Records roster instead.
A thunderous masterpiece in a string of them from this band.
Somehow overrated and overlooked at the same time. It’s an exceptional album, one of the best of that decade. But let’s talk about Led Zep IV or Dark Side of the Moon some more please.
Oh my. This album is so preposterous and over the top. Militant German punk gospel just doesn’t get enough play, and I didn’t want this record to end. 4.5.
The classic songs are classic, but the rest just makes the album too damn long.
I love the first song, like the rest a lot.
Not their debut but fine nonetheless.
Blah blah blah
My favorite Nirvana album. In my estimation the best Nirvana album. It’s incredibly powerful.
