4.0 + All the elements that define Beach House's greatness are here - the dreamy guitar work, smoky vocals, splashy and spare drumming, warbly background fills. All of these come together beautifully on "Zebra", "Walk in the Park", "Silver Soul." The latter track marks the record's emotional climax with Victoria Legrand's plaintive refrain: "it is happening again..." I love these and other poignant moments on the record but if I'm honest, I tend to skip over much of the rest, particularly some of the middle tracks. For me, Beach House's dream pop sound, though established most decisively on this record, will be more fully realized on later projects like "7" and "Depression Cherry."

Not come across this duo before now. First listen - really like the sensibility, the vocals, the simplicity. Will definitely put this on rotation.

Nice album, very smooth production and vocals. Not as intriguing as some of their other projects but still a fun listen. Favourite songs are Zebra, Silver Soul (classic sample), Walk in the Park, Used to Be (fav), Real Love and Take Care (fav). Beautiful outro.

I can't say that I've listened to much dream pop before this, but I found this album really pleasant. It doesn't particularly grab you and draw you in, but the music is all very pleasant and flows well from song to song. They work really well together as a duo and both members of the band have good voices. It's not an album that I would describe as spectacular, but its very pleasant to tap your foot to as you listen to it, and the world could use plenty of that at the moment 4/5

Guess I woke up on the unforgiving side of the bed, because this Teen Dream was a bit of a nightmare. But it's as advertised; it's sung in the key of "maudlin teen." Personally, I'd rather listen to Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" on repeat than listen to this album again. It's a no from me, dawg.

I love the dreamy sleepy soundscapes of Beach House. This album is not my favorite, though. The vocals seem out of place, and their 'sound' is underdeveloped. I think first time listeners should skip this album & go straight to Depression Cherry - that album is ethereal, wavy & emotional.

Never heard of Beach House before and this album was a good introduction. I liked the harmonics between the vocalists and the melodies as well, not to mention the the guitar riffs. Listened while I work and the songs did a great job of a chill background music. A solid 8/10. Favorite songs: Zebra, Silver Soul, Better Times

Couldn't get into this at all. Listened to it the first time last week, thought it was dull, then listened to it again when a couple of you thought it was really good and still didn't get it, then listened to it again this morning and still find it dull. Too beige for me, doesn't do enough to elevate it above background music. 2/5.

I personally never got that much into Beach house. I don't mind them as a band, I just think most of the songs have the same style and maybe one of them is worth mentioning.

Godammit I like this genre. I know it's not very inventive and gutsy but it's easy listening and chill. Reminds me of a lot of bands that I suddenly realise are not very original. If all the best tracks from all the 'dream-pop' bands were put in a 'greatest hits' album then that would deserve to be in the top 1001 maybe.

It took me a long time to "get" Beach House. Just like the ineffable cover of this album, their songs (and the way they're produced) look very samey at first glance, but the more you actively delve into them, the more some of their charms become visible. That being said, the overall effect of such strand of dream pop is still hit-or-miss for me, just like that zebra pattern, once again. Even if a song like "Zebra", to stay on that very idea, proves that duo knows what they are doing, at least. Chord changes alternate between minor and major modes in ways that can make the whole thing mysterious and addictive, keeping with the fluctuating pattern of said artwork. And with the right set of ears (not too bothered by the overabundance of high-end frequencies), the unobtrusive, polished production of *Teen Dream* then soon becomes a lesson in subtlety and restraint. Quite remarkable, even if not *downright* remarkable. For what it's worth, this record is probably the band's masterpiece, thanks to standout tracks such as the one mentioned before, "Norway", "10 Mile Stereo" and "Take Care". The rest passes by quite nicely as background music. And when it comes to Beach House's whole discography, add *7* to *Teen Dream*, and maybe *Bloom* or even this year's *Once Twice Melody*, and you'll have a good idea of what Beach House can do when they are at the peak of their powers. After that, it's only for hardcore fans, really... Some dreams can't go on forever, can they? One of my favorite albums of all time. I've listened to this countless times since I discovered it 3 months ago. I've listened to it while hiking, working, walking around the city, riding a train in Europe, lying in my bed, and lying on a rock in the woods in the rain. I've listened to this high on weed, shrooms, and LSD. The production is much more sophisticated and involved than their prior two albums, they go really far with the capabilities of their keyboards and how to manipulate Legrand's vocals as another instrument, a tool frequently employed in dream pop. "10 Mile Stereo" is the biggest example of how far they take synths you would never see in their s/t or Devotion. I'm a fan of every single song. It was very hard for me to resist not adding every single song to my liked songs on Spotify, which after listening to over a thousand albums, is something I've only struggled with on Pet Sounds, Sgt Pepper, and Abbey Road. For reference, the songs I hesitatingly convinced myself were not needed to be added were "Better Times" and "Real Love." So what do I love about this album? I'm not going to do a song-by-song analysis, as I believe the album is highly coherent, and their strengths are not unique to each track despite how special each of them is. In short, it's one of the most optimistic, hopeful albums. In general, Beach House albums are dreamy, hypnotizing, nostalgic, and comforting. Songs like "Used to Be" lift my spirits and put a smile on my face despite the conflicting longing lyrical subject. But they all put a smile on my face... I'm not making this up... only this album is only to do this to me!! Every song starts with a peculiar hook that pulls you in, and the dreamy keyboards, rhythm, and entrancing vocals stop you from diverting your attention. Teen Dream is peculiar in that nearly every song has this bridge into what could be an entirely different song. The whole record is coherent. "Zebra" pulls you in with the mysterious opening chords and hits you with powerful and emotional synths. Then when you think that must be the highlight, "Silver Soul" shows you that yes, the WHOLE ALBUM is just as strong. "Norway" is *probably* not my favorite, but it's what I might consider being their best song. Skipping to near the end, we have one of the most complex, exciting tracks "10 Mile Stereo" which drops into "Real Love" which calms the nerves and anticipates the climax of the album. "Take Care" is my favorite closer of all time... it feels like a warm hug that almost makes you cry, and you wish that the album would never end. Teen Dream hit me in a huge way, as I started listening to their discography in order and was stunned at how dramatic the shift was from Devotion. I had not felt the same way about later albums, but they're different moods. I'm happy this is the Beach House album chosen on this list, but I highly recommend everyone to check out the rest of their discography. Beach House is among the most consistent bands out there, having 8 incredible records. They haven't sold out. They churn out creative ideas in every album. I admit I only started listening to them 5 months ago, but they're my new favorite band, and I can't wait to see them live next month.

I must be a dreary millennial because I appreciate the lugubrious tone of this album. It’s a general album for a generation that is worse off than the previous, continuously blamed for their parents’ decisions—who gave us participation trophies? If a part of you doesn’t understand the mood of this album, then you might just be too old to understand this sadness is generally in our blood along with all the micro-plastics; like it or not.

**6/19/2022 - ALBUM #143** Today's Album: "Teen Dream" by Beach House - I have heard a lot of talk about dream pop as I have explored music discussion, but this is probably the first album from that genre that I'm actually sitting down to listen to all the way. So, does it live up to expectations of an ethereal and spacey experience? Well, what I can say is this album does a very great job of being wallpaper music, which seems to be sort of the goal with this genre as far as I can tell. Each song is usually a really peaceful guitar that blends with a drum machine, bass, and a bunch of ethereal chorus vocals to back up a really powerful lead vocalist. The lyrics are sort of all over the place, but it adds to that ethereal dream like aesthetic for sure. The opening track is a little hard to take seriously nowadays with the chorus line, "arching AMONG USSSSS", but that is obviously at no fault of the artist and the track itself is a really straightforward and accessible opener to the sound of this album. I think this album is worst when it doesn't feel like it's doing anything innovative or new and just sticking in it's little bubble, but I think the overall vibe of this record is nice for simply putting on in the background and vibing to. I particularly enjoy the first half of this album with tracks like Silver Soul and Walk in the Park, and I do think the second half trails off a little bit in terms of quality, but I think it flows pretty well if you aren't paying too much attention to it. Overall, this is a really great, peaceful record to put on during a late night hang out or a night of insomnia. Give this one a listen if you like songs that make you float off into space. Pretty generic late 2000s early 2010s album. Kind of the sound at the time with a few tracks that had staying power. It's not that there's anything particularly BAD about this album just nothing particularly good.

Having just come down with COVID this was exactly the languid experience I was after.

Very melodious and beautiful, I will be giving this a spin for a while to get into the nooks and crannies.

Qui dit album des années 2010 dit indie, étant donné qu'aucun autre style musical n'était joué à cette époque marquée par la censure erasmusienne. Celui-ci était plutôt agréable, mais l'on aimerait pouvoir profiter de certains des albums clandestins de cette époque de propagande.

Incredible, simplistic, without the usual pretentiousness that seems to accompany what is very much a sound associated with hipsters. The music is not so different or unique or ground-breaking by any means, but this is a well done album. The songs hit real nicely, the lead vocal with that beautiful mix of raspy and clear, it is hard not to just simply enjoy this album and feel content that for 50 minutes there was nothing to really regret.

I don't think I've heard of Beach House or any of the music on Teen Dream. I think I liked this album. The album reminded me perhaps of Florence + the Machine. There was something to this album that reminded me at times of stuff I already listen to, but I wouldn't have confused this band with someone I already know. "Zebra" and "10 Mile Stereo" were my favorite tracks. I'd like to hear more from Beach House

Cool low key ambient music

I always love it when I refresh this website to see what today's album is and it's something completely new to me -- the artist(s), the songs, the album, and sometimes even the genre -- and I especially love it when it's contemporary like this one is. And it's quite good. These songs are compositionally and harmonically interesting to my ear, and they are performed and recorded superbly well. Such great style and texture here, and I love that no one voice or instrument is pushing its way to the front. Everything blends and bends together so beautifully. I will listen to this one again and also explore their other albums.

This is probably the album Zach Braff plays in an attempt to make people think he's deep. He's not.

Some nice synth textures here. Overall a little too downtempo and one-note for me. I feel like good headphones and a joint may improve the album though.

A few months back I went through a major Beach House phase. I wanted to catch up on their older albums in preparation for their new one (which is very good!). I’d always liked them before but something suddenly clicked in my brain chemistry and I became obsessed. I would stay up late listening to them until I fell asleep. Their dreamy, melancholy style sounds particularly good after midnight and they became a part of my end of the night routine for a while. This album might be the best example of their style. The songs are excellent, the arrangements are lush, and the drumming gives the sleepy music a little extra energy (some of their albums just use a drum machine to keep time). There’s a magic in their music I can’t get enough of - I find it very soothing. Favorite tracks: “Zebra,” “Silver Soul,” “Walk in the Park,” “10 Mile Stereo,” “Take Care”

Gotta say, I was pretty stoked to see an album released post 1999 for a change! And an indie album, no less! They definitely nailed the dreamy feeling, but without getting too lost in their own experimentation, which I appreciated. I love the slidey electric guitar, fun little electronic sound bytes, and the overall impression of floating in the clouds.

Never heard this band before- I like the sound! - As it was proposed, this makes me think a little about a beach house. Some nervous excitement, some calm warmth, some beauty, some chill. - The first track, "Zebra" is such a lovely buildup. I was really let down by the drum tones/performance when it finally hits though at 2:20. The kick and (more specifically) the snare sound so weak. Regardless, the rest of the track is really nice! Great chord progression and textures. I sort of back-burnered the rest of the album and didn't really focus too hard on elements beyond this first track though. Nice album!

This record is the exact sound of all indie anti-pop mainstream records in the 2010s. It takes me back to being 25, wanting to get drunk, party, and listen to anything but this style of music. I don’t dislike it, I just can’t have fun with it. And nothing about this feels special or groundbreaking.

I absolutely believe this album was released in 2010 - a few cool beats here and there, but they’re buried under all the cursive.

This layman’s opinion on Beach House was that they have a great, unique (and therefore list-worthy) sound, but not necessarily many great tunes to match it. Did this album change my mind? Maybe not, but on this particular day its dreamy vibes proved to be the perfect soundtrack to my walk. I’ll give it a hearty 3.5 stars.

Dreamy background music that works as foreground music, too--meaning that these are identifiably songs. Not catchy or moving songs, but songs nonetheless, which is more than most dream-slush peddlers manage.

yuuuuuuuge fan of this album that i had never heard of before. Likely going into the rotation for many of the songs. i worry a bit that these songs won't be as good on shuffle as they were on the album, but that's how it be sometimes.

a nice album, but rather boring. each song had the same kind of tune, and nothing stood out. i certainly didn't hate it, but it's just fine. this album must be a lovely listen right before bedtime, though.

One of my main complaints with dream pop is that it can be too, well, dreamy. It ends up coming across as monotonous, unexciting, and a bit boring. This album pretty much fell into that pit trap for me. It was pleasant enough to listen to, but I wouldn't seek it out again. That said, Zebra and Take Care (the album opener and closer) broke the mold a little bit, and did catch my attention as standout tracks.

I am not familiar with and never heard of BEACH HOUSE and their third album, TEEN DREAM at all. After listening to TEEN DREAM multiple times, I really the soft, clear vocals and the haunting musicianship that this album gives us. But I struggle with the album as a whole, while the vocals are exquisite, and the lyrics are stream-of-consciousness, and both really work well together. I have a problem with the musicality at the beginning of the album I was almost falling asleep, not out of boredom, but rather the lack of variety, as the album progressed I was able to get the musicality and the flow the album was much better, hence the higher score on the songs. A interesting and unusual album, almost like a Kate Bush with stream-of-consciousness lyrics rather than storytelling. This kind of music seems to be in a no-man's land between classic and modern. At the time of writing, it's cringeworthy heartfelt saccharine pop-folk without a hint of irony or authenticity.

This was my first time with Beach House, but I am now a fan. I really love this album. I very much love Victoria Legrand's voice and the beautiful sound of this music. I am looking forward to hearing them again.

Well, this album had nothing for me today. There was no assault on my senses, it just didn’t touch me at all. I could see playing this if I was having trouble falling asleep. But since I don’t typically have that problem, I don’t know what part this album can play for me.

The opening track Zebra perfectly fit my mood and needs at the moment giving me high expectations for the remainder of the album. Perhaps too high. No other track rose above a non-committal shrug on my how-much-do-you-like-it? meter. Songs are simplistic and repetitive, both rhythmically and melodically. I wanted bigger changes, more surprises. There were times when they teased me with a build and I thought, ok here we go, and then...no. Overall, this just didn't do much for me.

Beach House’s dreamy, ethereal sound goes down easy. I put it on last night as I laid down to sleep and was out before the end of the second song. Well-rested today I listened again. This time I made it through all the songs fully conscious. As each song started to lose my attention I started thinking about dreamy albums I like - for example The Virgin Suicides soundtrack by Air or Sigur Rós. That lead me to wonder how much more was left to listen to on this album so I could switch to one of those. Even the album cover is so light and forgettable that every time I went to the 1001 web page I kept thinking there was a problem loading the page. I sat down for a third listen determined to focus more and follow along with the lyrics. Before I made it halfway through I found myself reading the news as Beach House faded into the background. It was more pleasant in that context. This album seems to be best listened to while focused on something else. TEEN DREAM is like plain oatmeal at a breakfast buffet - not terrible or unacceptable but also not something I’ll choose if there are omelets, cinnamon rolls, sausage or French toast.

I LOVE Bloom, but I just wasn't digging this one as much. 7/10.

This sounds a bit like the moody musical sections of some TV show, where the characters stare into the distance in the rain pondering what they've done. Not that that's a bad thing, really liked it.

this should be the type of stuff that on paper i should like. in reality its not very often i like american indie music. its generally like this album, bland, twee and made for adverts.

I can only imagine what Nigel is going to say about Teen Dreams. Yeah, this was fine. You might say it's a stirring reminder that good things can happen when you step out of your comfort zone. But I wouldn't. Would make a good support band for The Chuckle Brothers if one of them hadn't died.

I've never really been able to get on board the Beach House hype train. There's bits of shoegaze (at its blandest), there's bits of Flaming Lips (at their blandest), there's bits of MGMT (who outside of the hitz were pretty bland themselves), but 12 years on I'm still struggling to find much of interest in this. It's hipster MOR. I was surprised it made best album of the year lists back in the day so I am even more surprised it has made it onto a best albums ever list.

Moody as hell

I had never heard of them and I always welcome a new discovery with the promise of a back catalogue to explore. However so far they make all of the right sounds but I'm yet to be engaged. The reviewers who reference a shoegazing musical style must come from California. This is much more cheerful version of life. Cover art 1/5

This is OK and I can see why some may see this as valid on this list, but a little too ethereal for my liking. "Silver Soul" "Walk In The Park" "Used To Be" and best of all "Take Care" are ok but sadly not to my taste and wouldn't be in my list I am afraid.

The glut of positively beaming critical reviews make me feel like I’m missing something, and that like LCD Soundsystem, I’m losing my edge. See what I did there? For me, ‘Teen Dream’ is pleasant but ultimately drab and forgettable indie/dream pop. Fast forward and listen to ‘Lover Of Mine’ which is the best and most interesting song on the album, then head back to opening track ‘Zebra’ which is also OK. You can pretty much skip the rest of the record.

Boring

Beautiful album, you forget about how much music was like this around 2010, it was a really good time for music. Surfy/indie/laid-back. Music to sit in a warm field and listen to.

Individual tracks are pleasant - montage music for films at the sad part when you don’t know if the romance will work out or not. All together as an album it’s dreary. Tough to wade through in one go.

i am familiar with all of beach house's discography, but i honestly didn't remember this album too well due to not listening in maybe a year. long story short, a relisten was definitely due, and i'm glad i got the opportunity to do so. the album starts off on a dazzling note with the enchanting Zebra and ends with an equally charming track, Take Care. nearly every track between shines with beauty, personality and dreamy gorgeousness. the music hangs over the listener with the softness of a blanket, but the nature of it as stunning and intense as the stars in the night sky. this is one to get lost in. alone in your room with the rain shattering your windows, or maybe holding hands with a lover as you watch those blue waves desperately gnaw at the sand. the choice is yours.

So dreamy, but never to the point of feeling like it blew itself away; it remained fluid but thick and sweet, like floating in a pool of honey. The songwriting and production echoed a lot of the same notes as Fleet Foxes for me while also calling to mind Phil Spector and his wall of sound, and of course it definitely had the influence from the synth-rock sounds of Disintegration-era Cure. Teen Dream by Beach House (2010) The languid sounds produced by this duo have a remarkably attractive quality. Slow tempos and lush legato phrasings seem to wash over the listener with warmth and comfort. Even the peculiar wavering pitch effect (“Norway”) is disciplined and not off-putting or distracting. Melodies, chord structures, and arrangements are sufficiently atypical to keep the listener on his/her toes. Verdant, voluptuous keyboards and simple but competent guitar lines soothe the ears. Percussion is understated and bass is well subdued. Victoria Legrand’s vocal performance may lack formal excellence, but she makes even grievances seem maternal and honest, with sufficient feminine strength to sustain interest. The overall effect would make a man sit down and shut up. A couple of tracks have what sounds like hum and tape hiss, a puzzling (intentional?) feature in the digital age. Lyrics are neither flashy nor deep, and appropriately visual—obscure, and packed with enough inscrutable metaphors to keep a fan of Ezra Pound intrigued. This album makes for a very pleasant first-time listen. If your hair is long enough to cover your earbuds, you could listen to this album during a boring Zoom session. Try it and tell me how it goes. 3/5

Really like this album. Nice sound quality to it, relaxing, a bit ethereal. Overall very nice.

Dreamy. Pretty... but kinda boring. Reminds me of the XX, but this one's a little more interesting. There's a few tracks I liked more than the rest, when they managed to do something really weird with polymodality like Norway.

Could never really get into Beach House but I enjoyed this. Will definitely revisit.

Forgot about this one

Very calm and relaxing, but still has lots of character. Love the instrumentals overall, but especially in "Norway". This is the type of album that would be great in the background but can also hold my interest if I was focusing in on listening to it. It's hard to call something "timeless" that you have only heard once, but this is an album that feels like it will never be dated and could come from any generation. Will definitely listen to more Beach House. 4/5.

This is the type of music I regularly listen to so it’s safe to say I enjoyed this album. It does sound quite a bit like most other dream pop albums but there’s something different about this one. It's ok I guess. A little bland. I usually quite like this kind of music but it just struck me like someone heard a couple of Yo La Tengo's dreamier numbers and tried to stretch them out over an album.

"Don't I know you better than the rest?" It's a question lots of great music asks, but usually not in the beginning of the text. But it seems like Beach House wear their hearts on their sleeve here. To me, the approach is slightly incongruous with the genre, and obscures the rich texture with few ingredients. Hardly sparse, but not over-subtle, a little loud: It's a grower. Perfect length, though, obviously.

Why did I have to listen to that, 15 minutes of tedium and I gave up.

Melodic album that's easy to listen to.

It nice, peaceful, and frequently ethereal. I enjoy the sound, but after listening to it several times, i feel like i lose my place and have no idea what song i'm listening to. It is pleasant but very samey.

I wish this had had more variety, but overall a really enjoyable album that was relaxing and emotionally evocative at the same time. 8/10

I love listening to this kind of music while doing other things, like designing or reorganizing my home. It inspires me.

Is this a perfect album? Every song is solid. Each is pretty and has a hook. Each stays faithful to the shared woozy mood of the album. The "soundscape" is beautfiul. I can't understand what the heck Nico is singing, no matter how long she draws out the vowels at the end of each phrase. But something about it all adds up to an energy-sapping experience. It's like trudging up a beautiful, steep sand dune and the view is no different at the top, just more dunes. Maybe Beach House + hangover + returning to desk work after river work is not the right equation. B+

Why is their sound ethereal? Her voice? Combo of synth and guitar? Is it an effect of the droning in each song? Their music just feels different somehow. It’s hypnotic, relaxing, nostalgic, but also has a hint of emo, it’s heavy but light. A combination of Indy pop, sci-fi soundtracks, nostalgic sounding effects, early electronic minimalism and a beautiful deep female voice akin to Nico. There is really only one crescendo, but it feels like it’s constant throughout. For me this is an easy 5, just as good on a summer drive as a moody evening in by myself. All songs are good, catchy. This has been the soundtrack to many road trips and will continue to be so.

Take me back so simpler, vibier times. Fill my heart with your delicate voice. Fill my tank with your 5-star album.

Good album, just not much differentiation between songs. Every song felt relatively similar and I didn’t notice much distinctness. However the songs were well composed and I enjoyed them.

Very pretty and moody. I like it but got a bit bored as it went on.

I love Beach House's approach to using low-end synthesizers and other electronic instruments, I believe they said something like "find a crappy keyboard, and find the one setting on it that sounds good and ignore the rest". I had no listened to this particular album, but I knew of Silver Soul which is super good, peak Beach House. The semi-lofi soft melancholy singing and song progressions is millennial sad in a bottle. I think it still holds up. Legrand's vocals are still unique to my ears, they feel very honest. I hear elements of drone, shoegaze, but of course that sparkly indie-pop of the 2010s. I love the detuning on Norway, which I've heard as well. There is a bit of a lull in the middle of the album for me though, the first 3 tracks are 4s but the others are completely ignorable for me, unfortunately. I really want to give it a 4 but as an album it is not consistent in quality, so it's a 3.5 down to 3.

Jag brukar känna att album i den här genren ofta blir för tråkiga, men Beach House lyckas träffa mitt i prick, när det trygga, repetitiva, hypnotiserande, kombineras med intressanta melodier. Älskar Victoria Legrands androgyna röst. Inledningstrion, Zebra -> Silver Soul -> Norway är briljant. Avslutningen, med 10 Mile Stereo -> Real Love -> Take Care likaså. Mittenkvartetten håller inte riktigt samma klass, förutom Lover of Mine. Bästa låt: 10 Mile Stereo.

An effortless listen. Not the most memorable of albums, but really enjoyable when you’re in the right frame of mind for it.

I think the album is very good. It has nice vocals and some great instrumentals to go with the vocals. I thoroughly enjoyed the direction of the album.

Vibes are immaculate, this is if Cigarettes After Sex and Mom Jeans touched tips and this came out. Definitely reminds me of the good days of the early 2010s, its pretty sweet.

Beach House is a top ten artist for me, and this album is what brought me in. It's an entire mood.

No le puse atención

Lots of the songs by Beach House sound very similar. So I think the album is cohesive. I was able to listen to the whole thing, but largely forgot about it while listening. Then something happened, the streaming service got to the end of the album and another song came up and the style was similar but the singing was better. I was like "ooh who is this singer, they should get her to do more songs" but it was a different band and album entirely ("The Trip by Still Corners")
