Then checking the release date and it was early 90s??? Who the fuck produced this it sounds so crisp and massive. The mixing on this was ahead of its time for sure, ranging formform beutifully crisp sounds of the more stripped down tracks to big soaring ones that almost sound like something that Mike Dean would produce. So sick wtf

Very ahead of its time at parts in terms of the atmosphere it created, and pretty cool someone leaning into more atmospheric music during a very songwritey era

I've always found The Who to be made up of talented and fascinating musicians, but I've never found any of their songwriting compelling. There are moments where it comes together to sound great but it'll be a minute of a 6 minute song, really hoping it'll click one day but currently to me it's a lot of awesome bells and whistles attached to a piece of plywood. That being said, a live album is a way better way to experience this setup and Townshend's playing on this album absolutely rips a lot of the time so fuck it, I had fun

Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
Wu-Tang Clan
the only one so far that I'm not even revisiting because I listen to this album so often. This could easily be the greatest hip hop album of all time, its an effortlessly high class and standard debut that maintains the raw energy that comes from fresh new artists. Hearing lyrical comradery on this level had only been touched on at this point and in my opinion this is the first album where it truly felt as though every member knew each other like family and that's where the cohesiveness came from. This album has everything you could want from a hip hop album, storytelling, bragging, INCREDIBLE flows that chop and change in heart beat. I could almost listen to this album not knowing the words and enjoy just as much simply from how they interlock with the beats. RZA's (and others') beats on this album are also what make this so special. While working with elements of the rhythmically infectious bouncing beats and jazz samples of other boom bap artists, RZA managed to expertly turn up the harshness and darkness of the sound, while still having the finesse to create emotionally potent tracks like Tearz. Beyond this, this being the genesis for countless amazing solo careers and completely changing the face of what rap and hip hop could be, and from the sound, seemingly without even trying. I've always credited this to RZA having huge plans for the group but not being transparent with all the members lol. Truly a genius, who just happened to be surrounded by a bunch more geniuses. In a way, thank god no one gave a shit about Staten Island so we could be given this album. One of the best of all time.

I think missy could've made some real proper all time greats but was held back to some extent by the industry expecting her to be tied into the mellow rnb side of things. This is almost there and has tracks that would be at home on an all time great hip hop album but the whole tracklist doesn't quite get there and that's super dissapointing to me because Missy had the ability if she'd been allowed the freedom that other artists were at the time. That being said this album is still a great time and a really enjoyable time capsule for this period

Fulfillingness' First Finale
Stevie Wonder
The only album from his crazy 5 album run that I hadn't listened front to back yet. Firstly, Boogie on Reggae Woman is one of the greatest songs ever made with one of the synth bass parts ever written. Beyond that, I'm constantly shocked at how all the songs sound like Stevie songs but there's still ALWAYS fresh ideas. They Won't Go When I Go is such a moving piece after such a funky album and I love when he lets the more gospel side of his music out. Not all of his music reaches me emotionally as much as it seems to reach others but his passion for music and his ability to make that passion shine through in how it sounds is completely undeniable and lets all of his music grow on you in different ways until you can't live without it. To me he is the epitome of what music means to the world and I want an international day of mourning when he passes

Man so much fun I love early punk stuff. I also (due to alphabetical seating) sat behind someone with a The Slits patch on her jacket for every exam I did in high school and it's very satisfying to finally give a proper listen and enjoy it. Finding out they didn't really know how to play the instruments makes sense lol but they made so much with so little at their disposal and I think that's the absolute pinnacle of what music can, and is supposed to be. I may not come back to this album too much but it easily gets 5 stars for being a representation of why I love music so much.

Thought this was gonna be perfectly rated as soon as it started, and I was right. I absolutely adore Afro-Cuban jazz but have found it a little hard to get into and learn about and finding out about one of the more seminal records of the genre through here is just awesome. Finding out that Cannonball Adderly was part of making this album as well makes sense as to why I loved this one in particular so much he's easily my favourite alto player as every single time he plays he exudes so much joy, and is the best possible reminder that, at its core, jazz isn't some stuffy music snob genre and it's actually about smiling and dancing and connecting through the music you play. And honestly that kind of sentiment feels intrinsic to this album, that the musicians would have known was not destined for the success of the jazz stars but was made for the love of the genres and cultures that were brought together by people that simply love music

This was really enjoyable. Another in the list of albums I don't think I'll actively seek out again but I enjoyed thoroughly and am glad I heard it all the way through at least once. The incorporation of the fuzzy psychedelic guitars that seem popular within certain parts of Africa (currently escaping me where, maybe somewhere nearer the East coast but not quite the horn?) was so so good and the production over felt one step away from being what I would describe as lush and instead using a base of acoustic instruments that feel quite raw at times and are greatly enhanced by these "lush" embellishments. Very cool vocal inflections too

The Dark Side Of The Moon
Pink Floyd
While I think that the many many times in which people have attempted to dismiss this album as nothing but an iconic album cover and something that people convince themselves they like have some sort of validity, particularly in the internet age in which there's music you are expected to know inside out and appreciate to even be considered within discussions and people absolutely force themselves to "love" something because they're supposed to. Or even the exact opposite in which people dismiss this album's greatness for it not being groundbreaking and ambitious enough, there is still some validity to this of course as there were more ambitious musical statements within the band's own discography and most fans often won't have DSotM as their favourite Floyd. What I think people are choosing to brush over too hurriedly here in the quest to have a unique opinion in which they truly believe (as opposed to the hundreds said just for the controversy), is that this album to the average music consumer is weird. It's strange and uncomfortable and even unpleasant to listen to at times (I have many people who refuse to listen to Time due to its intro), and it also takes its time to make its statements. All of these elements are historically and contemporarily a product for complete disaster in the commercial realm and yet, in spite of this, this album became the longest charting number 1 album of all time against the likes of artists like Michael Jackson (I know the rankings change all the time but point stands). And while I'm a big proponent of the idea that commercial success is usually negligible in regarding how great an album is, when it comes to the truly all-time greats of respective fields, you absolutely have to pay attention to the fact that certain artists managed to create something that was truly a beautiful and well-thought out artistic statement that manages to push some boundaries and still appeal almost universally to a commercial AND artistic audience. To me that is the mark of what makes this album wholly unique, is that, while Pink Floyd were special in being able to make somewhat odd sounding and artistic (comparable to what usually charts) albums where many had this wide appeal. There is something so special about an album like this where the worlds of drug-addled artists trying to create the sounds echoing round in their heads on tape, and that of the commuting, top 40, "I just like a good tune" types of the world come completely together to create something that's more than an album, it truly is an icon. The Beatles weren't The Beatles because they wrote the best music of all time because you can't measure that, they were The Beatles because of what they left the world with after they left, coming into a black and white world and disbanding it at a time filled with colour and the the sounds of the true artists that inspired them being heard throughout the whole world. Likewise, this album is so special and beautiful to me because it's one of the main strongholds of the general population feeling, caring, and listening more than anyone seems to give them (us?) credit for. Art sometimes feels like its dead to many people and I choose to view this album's status as a shining beacon that that will never be true.

Prince
This album helped me finally figure out my issue with Prince and I think it's with his fans (who seem to be everyone). It's that Prince is an inherently silly artist, partially due to making music in the 80s and that being fairly normal, but also he was a weird guy. When I listen to this music and approach it the same way I approach something like Talking Heads, I love it, it's only when I try and approach it in the "heady all time artist such a mysterious and clever guy" place that it doesn't hit how it should. I suppose this is on me but people seem to miss that this music is silly and fun most of the time and that's its strength as opposed to being something that's serious and moving all the time, even though it can be at certain moments. Idk I've also thought stories about him being super cool and mysterious made him sound annoying so maybe it's just not the kind of artist archetype that I enjoy, but anyway, had a great time listening because I approached it differently!

Eminem
Despite being really big into Eminem when I was a kid, a front to back listen of this album had still somehow escaped me for some reason. Upon listening I think my favourite would still have to be The Slim Shady LP, but I can absolutely understand why this is the acclaimed album. Songs from this record make it feel like he must have made them years into his career and fame as opposed to about two years after he became well-known in the mainstream. It's ironic that he's become the artist that he's become (seems like he's doing better as a person though), because this album drips with self-awareness of who he is, his space in hip hop, and his place in the musical zeitgeist in an almost soothsayer-like fashion. Just awesome stuff, if listened with context in mind as a LOT has changed since this album came out.

I didn't enjoy this as much as I thought I would, there's something about the instrumentation that doesn't support her voice quite as well as I would have liked but towards the back half of this it started to mold into something that I really enjoyed, very angelic. Also contains a cover of the best beatles song so automatically gets points lol

Peter Tosh
Despite being a big fan of this era of reggae, the wailers, and bob marley, this album still exceeded my expectations this was great. There's a quality to tosh's voice that feels unique amongst the various powerful voices of early reggae and ska and makes a lot of these songs feel closer to the american soul music of the day than a lot of other acts. His vocals are tender and sweet yet he will absolutely command your attention when he needs to in a way that makes this album's blend of politics, love, and heartbreak gel so perfectly with his performance that this album flows effortlessly. Doesn't hurt that the sweet little guitar parts all over the record also sound absolutely heavenly

Miles Davis
I have listened a billion times and studied this with several people and it endlessly has things to listen to. I'm not one for simply agreeing that a greatest album is a greatest album but if you actually like jazz and listen to a fair amount, it's so easy to find yourself continuously coming back to this album and losing yourself in the sound. The combination of musicians puts all of my favourite's into one room together and lets them explore an avenue of jazz that was largely untouched at the time. One of the greatest feats you can undertake as an artist is serving a regular music listening audience a piece that's in an odd meter, mode, or scale, and have it be digested as though it were nothing out of the ordinary. The players on this album weren't exploring modal jazz because they wanted to be cool (haha) and unique, they were doing it to chase after textures and sounds they hadn't had a proper chance to explore in tandem with a record-buying public yet. And all of these great minds and conflicting personalities, the dark and brooding Coltrane, the in-your-face, joyous Adderly, and the soft-touched and spoken, sparse, almost clinical Evans all come together with this want to truly and thoroughly explore an area of the world they inhabit as much as they can, and it shows. The chemistry and the sound come together to create something that, in jazz, is usually left to the wind and those standing directly in front of the musicians. By virtue of the music being improvised andchanging every time it's played, moments like this a rarely caught in such quality in the jazz world and holy fuck am I glad this one was.

The Low End Theory
A Tribe Called Quest
Maybe the best album of one the greatest musical acts of all time. It's always hard to write when I come across an album like this that maybe changed my whole life and I'm so close to because it feels like I can't say anything that I haven't already heard others say. Everyone has there own niches of what makes them understand what music can truly be and what it can make them truly feel and for me that falls within Tribe's whole discography and community, reaching out to De La Soul, Jungle Brothers, Queen Latifah, Busta Rhymes. My whole life I have had an affinity for art and music particularly that's worked in contrast to the more sensible and "normal" environment I was raised around, and moreso in my contrast to be able to express myself.
This is why ATCQ has always been so important to me, they create everything that makes me feel the music sooo hard yet they never lose their sense of humour or their ability to just be silly and it makes the music so much better for it.
But my own random personal feelings aside, this album really is that good. Not necessarily the first to tackle Jazz within hip hop (RIP Guru) but they were the first to clean it up and package it the way they did. By all reports this was due to Q Tip being the perfectionist he is and it really does show. Hours sitting in a studio listening to potential records to sample and tweaking the mix as you run back and forth between the studio and your car to see how it sounds is all that can make an album this minimalist and sparse sound like something that can undeniably move heads.
I can still vividly remember the first time I heard Buggin Out as I was leaving my house to walk to school and it was just the perfect moment as that snare hit so crisp and Phife comes in with one of the greatest verses of all time. I rewound it and played it over and over again and didn't hear the second verse until I was halfway to school. And despite hearing it that many times I'm still bumping it regularly years and years later. Scenario is maybe the greatest posse cut of all time, rivaled on its own album by Show Business which in my opinion may be the most underrated posse cut in hip hop.
But beyond just my personal experiences with it, this album is an ode to jazz and the culture from which hip hop was born. There's a large voice often saying that hip hop and sampling culture is somewhat "stealing", but when Q Tip specifically makes a point to shout out Ron Carter on Verse from the Abstract, this is more love than individual musicians were usually shown within Jazz itself. People don't regularly talk about McCoy Tyner, they talk about John Coltrane (and his quartet) despite the fact that without the lush and rhythmically dense piano on those records, they simply wouldn't be what they were. But this is because these musicians are tools used by an auteur (for lack of a less wank word), and this is crediting how important the arranger and organiser and conductor of musical performances is, while displaying great trust in these musicians to do in knowing they cna do what you require while adding their own flavour to it. This is the culture that was passed down to hip hop and I think is displayed so beautifully on this album, with moments such as the one I mentioned not relying on you having prior knowledge but telling you where this music came from and why, transforming the musical sphere from simply self-referential, to self-preserving.
But this is taking the piss! No one wants to hear people talk about jazz like this and really what's important to me is that this album is intrinsically intwined with my whole life at this point, the highs, the lows, hanging out, hyping myself up, meeting new people, this album is more than music, it's a constant, it's gospel, it's just fucking awesome.

If I'm honest I think I morphed Tori Amos and Toni Braxton into the same thing in my head over the years and so this was a surprise. But a pleasant one! Another great in a long line of all-time women singer-songwriters and this just absolutely goes off for a debut album. The back half in particular feels super loaded so it just keeps getting better and better. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Kanye West
This is one of the only Kanye albums that I can still happily listen to other than his debut, otherwise it's just marred by images of the broken and hateful man that remains after the fact of these albums he's made. This one I can still listen to however, because it's transformed for me into something truly sinister. Other albums of his were beautiful talent he wasn't able to hold onto his whole life, but this album (to me) represents what broke him. The exploration of his mania in the wake of his mum dying, his WEIRD issues with sex and pornography, and the lush over-the-top nature of fame that led to him no longer inhabiting a plane of sanity. A realisation I had this time through the album was that Kanye has what many rich people have with money, an insatiable need for more even though the money has plateaued in value, in any practical sense. But he has this with sex, not money. Sex is value to him and all through this album you hear it no longer having the value it once had, yet him having a completely insatiable craving and need. This is harrowing to listen to, it sounds to me like a Shakespearean tragedy now, and it is indeed beautiful, dark, and twisted

If I'm being honest, much of this was an uphill battle against the inner 14 year old version of me that couldn't fucking stand this shit, and trying to remind myself that I had a newfound appreciation for bands like Sepultura and even Limp Bizkit, and so maybe there was something here for you. It halfway worked, these guys definitely wore their influences on their sleaves to start with which I think is kind of endearing, although unfortunately the rapping has just never worked for me and never will. There were some more psychedelic sounding passages on here that I thought were really cool and wanted more of, and I kinda loved it when Corey just made weird as fuck noises I thought it was hilarious but totally fit the vibe, kinda like the sound effects on Funkadelic albums. But yea ultimately this album just really underwhelmed me a bit and I constantly found myself wishing I was listening to the band that inspired each song instead of that song. While I give almost exclusively 1s or 5s to albums because I pretty much enjoy it or I don't, this album gets a 3, there's something in it, but it's just not present enough, maybe that comes later in their, I should probably check.

Well this was totally fucking awesome. Just swept away into another dreamworld with this one, the instrumentation is just sooo lush that you really feel like you're bathing in sound. On the other hand though you have this melodic and harmonic writing that fills this floaty music with tension at a second's notice and constantly keeps you on your toes. I'd imagine this is music for old shut ins on the subcontinent the way that vivaldi is in the western world, but in drawing that comparison, I can enjoy and get lost in this album in the exact same way. I can totally see why this so heavily affected musicians in the 60s who were less familiar with other cultures music as it grabs you instantly and never loosens its grip for a second

The most annoying people you know throughout your life will try and get you to listen to this album. DON'T DO IT!!! Not because the album isn't good, because it absolutely is, but because you need to listen to this album on your own terms. Only then do you really sit in it and have an easy time putting yourself in the shoes of someone in 1967 hearing these sounds for the first time and feeling unlimitedly inspired by what you could do with it. This album has taken some time to grow on me but the greatness of it ultimately will always shine through for those that love and understand music

The only downside of this album is that I love the song Booo!!! so much that I wish this album was her vocals over garage beats :( the instrumentation is still awesome though and this just drips in all of the things that were good and great about early 2000s RnB, all while leaning into the benefits of the english accent in a way that only benefits the sound

It's a tough life in this day and age truly thinking this is one of the greatest albums ever made. No one's gonna agree with you :( that being said this is the best thing ever, when I think of classic rock or dad rock or whatever you wanna call it this is what i think of to a T. Some completely iconic powerballads with crazy soaring harmonies, stunning harmonising guitar solos, wildly exciting organ parts, including a raucous blues number in there, a self referential song, several love songs, then close it out with an absolute SLAMMER that also slows it down a bit. This album IS the new york pizza or hot dog, it IS that street meat you got that the 5 star restaurant could never hold a candle to. I can talk all day about what I want from an album, the thought I want an artist to put into something, what consideration of history I think is important to make something an all time great, why sentiments of songs hit or fall flat for me. I'm sure I could say all of this about this album too and justify thinking it's so good, I COULD talk all day about what makes something great, or I could just sit there and appreciate that what I want has already been made, and it's amazing

Ice T
As is the case with most Ice T I've listened to, the passion is clear and visceral but majority of the production choices have aged in a way that takes a lot of sting out of how hard it hits. While Public Enemy's instrumentation still sounds over the top and ferocious and almost off-putting, California hip hop was largely based around loud and heavy-hitting kick and snare beats, which cause Ice T's music, despite having a similar ethos, to not have the same level of bite that other acts had.
That being said, this then falls into the category of "try and experience what it would've felt like at the time", and Ice's passion and pure anger pulls through so hard that this incredibly easy to do. To contemporary hip hop of the day, this was heavy metal, nothing exemplifying this more than the song Body Count, which he later named his metal band after. So while the beats fall short in a modern context, the aggression and love radiate out from this album like a glow and you end your experience with that passion planted inside you. And I think in this regard I can't view this album as anything but a complete success.

GZA
It's a shame so many people will be rating this after their first listen because this is an album that's dependent on a bit of context, as well as being one that took a while to grow on me and I think people won't get to sit with this record for quite enough time to truly appreciate it. I was already a huge Wu Tang fan when I first heard this, but didn't properly understand the surrounding movements in hip hop at the time. Seeing how this deepens the lore and style that Wu Tang brought to the scene, and understanding where these influences went in the following years of hip hop history give this album so much more depth than it seems at first listen. Overall this album just absolutely flexes the chemistry of all contributors and shows a bit of depth to RZA's production that was yet to be explored, all while doing so much to cement the legacy of the Wu Tang Clan.
Main takeaway: some of the skits are too long but B.I.B.L.E is one of the greatest songs ever made so who cares

Having spent my teenage years listening to and trying to educate myself about a lot of jazz instrumentalists, it took me far too long to work out that some of these songs were melodies I knew INCREDIBLY well that I was just hearing with words for the first time. That being said that was the first time I listened to this and there have been MANY repeat listenings since as Willie Nelson is just one of the supreme calming musicians. Nothin can be truly wrong in the world in the moment in which he is singing. The version of Moonlight in Vermont particularly makes me feel this way on this album it paints it's picture so vividly and you really imagine he's picturing it alongside you. Cool asf

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
I've been a bit of a Nick Cave skeptic all my life due to all of his fans that I've met being an insufferable group of self-loathing yet preachy people stuck in a loop of poor decisions to keep their mental health just bad enough to not enjoy fun music and maintain an air of pretense that listening to this man somehow makes them more than.
With all that being said I've given him the time of day since and his music is great, a real songwriter's songwriter, it feels like there's an element of "throw it at the wall and see what sticks" with his music that in this case is a positive and not a hinderance. It instead results in a large variety of ideas tied together by virtue of Nick Cave going into everything with a lot of passion for music, and a keen awareness of his limitations (I don't say limitations in a negative way, we all have them).
Unfortunately, despite my full 180 back into the loving arms of old Nick, I was in turn quite shocked at the sound of this record. There are obviously some greater tracks here that really stand out, mostly in regard to the ballads which is a style he seems to excel at, however during any song that gets a little bit louder and faster, I couldn't help but think about his famous quote about how every time he's annoyed by something obnoxious on the radio it's the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Every second spent listening to these songs I felt exactly what he was describing and couldn't help but think about the hypocrisy of not taking care to curb the obnoxious corners off of your "rocky" songs and instead turning out these tracks of mediocre, boringly produced, and loud without purpose tracks that sound as though they belong in a coming of age film from 2006 (and not a good one).
Ultimately, I'm really disappointed by this one, but only because I've set the standards high for him and don't believe I'll feel this way towards the majority of the rest of his albums that I haven't heard yet.

This was great, the only issue i ever really have with these albums of soul (sort of) singers from african nations that were granted funding and platforms for albums throughout the 60s and 70s is that they had to pander to a western audience through inclusions of western canon standards. It's not always a bad thing because usually the singer is a big fan of this music themselves, but there is definitely something lacking in most of the non-African tunes on this album, maybe a passion or personal connection that doesn't feel as strong and I think the album suffers for it unfortunately. That being said this doesn't apply to all of the performances and majority of the record was a joy to listen to.
But also was the laughing song supposed to sound so sinister because that was SCARY.

Apocalypse 91… The Enemy Strikes Black
Public Enemy
Once again another all time PE classic. They churned out way more hits than it felt like and this production was just so ahead of it's time with how harsh and almost industrial it was at times. A little interesting to hear some of the views on this album about their own feelings towards how black people in america act, very akin to The Blacker the Berry by Kendrick in which you do feel if they were asked now to talk about it, they would approach it with a lot more nuance than is presented here. But nuance is usually limited in the medium of music so it does make sense. But overall this was fantastic and I left fueled up to to point passion and energy somewhere and was ushered out by my favourite hip hop/metal crossover maybe ever.

Another inclusion that's a little odd but I thought was absolutely fantastic. She has so much charisma which definitely makes up for parts of the album that are a bit weaker sonically for me. This feels very cohesive and, above all, the spite really shines through to the listener. It's more commonplace in the modern era but women who'd been broken weren't allowed, or struggled to know how (in the public eye that is) to display their brokenness and an unwillingness to accept it in a way that truly struck home. This is a gorgeous example of someone airing their grievances with life and the world around them and winning for it, which is a beautiful thing that really gets to the core of why music is so important.

I really wanted to like this more than I did, this was incredibly innovative at the time it came in regard to the sound and particularly the attitude, and the plethora of other things that were fresh and new about MIA and the music she was making. Some of these songs are really great like the opening track there are definitely some bangers here but overall I don't think she truly understood the ways in which she was pushing the envelope. That opinion is largely influenced by how her career has gone since this time as well. Ultimately I think she sort of accidentally stumbled onto a massive and innovative sound that informed a decade or more of pop music to follow, and I think I love the music that she influenced a lot more than her music itself. That being said though the miserable old fucks on here that only wanna hear the same 50 blues-based white guy artists can get fucked she's getting a perfect score

At Folsom Prison
Johnny Cash
This is one of those classic albums that you just get as soon as you hear it. This doesn't capture one of the best musical performances of all time because the performance itself is not important what it really captures is the atmosphere and the period of time. You can learn so much just form this recording about how people behaved, how they expected others to behave, what was so appealing about Johnny Cash, why was it so important to perform at prison. What really shines through for me on this albums is his personality. You don't just see why people loved his music, you can see why people loved HIM. He was so charismatic and passionate, everything he's saying in his songs just floats right from his mouth and into your being, he was just simply made to capture people and he chose to do the right thing with it and used that gift to fight FOR people. A deeply troubled but great man, one whose legacy it feels simply can't die at this point.

Not a huge Zeppelin fan but this one's great I remember really not being sold on them back in the day and then hearing bring it on home which is still probably my favourite song of theirs. But yea just some great tunes, although I've always thought the solo in moby dick is just a little unwarranted and not very great to listen to, but still a jam anyway

This was the era for sure, I think the negative feelings I harbour towards this are entirely rooted in the music that I know was inspired by this, and most of that is shite. But yea what do I know 5 stars

I love listening to people who were born to play metal but metal didn't exist yet, it feels like seeing someone wearing a jacket that's really cool but it's so tight it restricts their movement

Rings Around The World

A really cool record from the britpop era that I had a great time listening to. Some of the experimental parts fell a little flat for me and fell into a bit of a silly annoying noises category, but some of them were lovely surprises, particularly the forays into styles of dance music and incorporation of record scratching just really amped up the level of fun you can have listening to this. The main highlights for me were the ballads on the backend of the album that may borrow a liiittle heavily from Blur's sound, but they do it justice so who gives a shit lol the songs are good. Overall had a great time and cherry on top I'm a big Rhys Ifans fan really cool to find out he was in this group for a time.

I'd say I had a better time than I thought I would, but I think this is predicated on how much trip hop and adjacent music my dad played growing up when I was a kid and of course would find it immensely boring. 8 year old me marginally preferred this to my mum playing Norah Jones. That being said there's a lot to love here and the textures are gorgeous, although my endless problem with being unable to detach the sample from the song that samples it goes on (James Brown - The Payback in the first song particularly). But on a quiet day sitting in the last rays of the sun, or waking up on a rainy saturday morning, this album has its place and knows it well, and as such I don't think I can really fault it.

George Michael
Wayyyyy less horny than his last album I listened to and it made it wayyyyy better!! Awesome instrumentation all over this thing, he clearly knows how to let others shine when it's their time and I think this album is so much better off for it. That being said his vocals are as crsip and clear as ever, really like the Stevie wonder cover too, one of my favourite ever songs.

This album is perfect it has no flaws. You might like something else more or their lyrics on later albums might hit better for you, but this album is truly p[perfect at what it's supposed to be. Pure passion, musicianship, and raw SOUND this thing is absolutely fucking huge. The bass tone alone could make this perfect. On top of that I think the ideas and themes are still so potent and important and come from such a real place, especially being released around the time of the Rodney King riots. Awesome music, awesome message, awesome performance, and if you say "well if they like communism so much why are they rich from people buying their music" then you clearly just don't understand the subject matter, what else are they supposed to do lol. But also fuck their stupid price gouged tickets maybe everyone's right

A Love Supreme
John Coltrane
The first time I listened to this album I was about 15 and trying really hard to like the jazz records I was supposed to, and looking back I understand I just wasn't ready to listen to something so left field that requires context to really appreciate. But I kept listening and every single time I listen to this album the experience feels more profound than the last. I believe the day that Coltrane truly clicked for me was when I read two things, "when he plays I hear him speaking to god" and "I watched him in black and white but when he plays I saw colours". And I don't think there's a better encapsulation of why this is so important than those, this is spiritual music.
So sure, maybe there's some weird kind of religious guilt that made me internalise the god statement, but this album changed the way that I understood music. I started thinking about it as simply another medium for art instead of something to immediately please me. A tool to understand the world around me and worlds I will never be a part of, and I dare say in the years since I suffered through this record for the first time it and its flow on effects have imbued my life with more colour than I understood to be possible.

The Dave Brubeck Quartet
While I think this album is usually wildly overrated in the jazz canon, that's only because people love it SO much. This album is still cool, stylish and sleak, allowing for a more invested listen or to put this on in the background while you do other things or pretend you're classy. My ramblings aside, Blue Rondo a la Turk is one of the best jazz performances ever and that first drop into 4/4 is one of my favourite tone-setters ever to kick off an album. Just classic stuff.

My only interaction with this man before now was seeing footage of a room full of children dressed up to look like him with fake beards, whisky, and cigarettes, all singing to him as he wept. One of the funniest things I've ever watched and also this album was pretty good

Michael Jackson
Every time I listen to a full MJ record I'm surpriseds by the number of dud tracks, like on this one Speed Demon is garbage, but I guess he was a hit single-based artist so it makes sense. Either way of course this album was great, the production was just something else entirely during this era of his music. Weird guy fun songs.

Stand!
Sly & The Family Stone
One of the best groups of musicians ever formed, that innovated so much seemingly without even trying. While the sounds on this album weren't as wildly unique as those to follow, you can hear that simply no one was making music like this at the time. While some might argue, I also feel as though music like this hasn't been made since. Aural experimentation for the sake of passion and joy will always sound better than experimentation for the sake of innovation alone and this record stands as a testament to that

Sooooo much better than the first time I listened to this. There's something just so correct about Jeff Lynne's songwriting, you put on a song and go yep, that's a song right there, it's got everything I need. About as simple as that, this album is a joy

KE*A*H** (Psalm 69)
Ministry
Listening to industrial metal is a lot like eating an absurdly hot chili pepper, it's going to be a bad time but I AM gonna do it. The pepper simply won't taste good it's not possible, the very foundation of why you are eating has to do with how horrible it is, and all of those accessible aspects of the flavour chilis add and the lovely warmth you feel from some nice heat in a meal are thrown out the window as you come face to face with the reality that you've actually decided to eat something that yes, is familiar, but is in fact going to be almost as bad a culinary experience as it is bad from the heat, pure acrid bitterness.
This is industrial metal, it will not only hurt me, it will hurt me in more ways than I expected even given the fact that I've chosen to listen to it so that it will hurt. The noises are not just harsh they are specifically selected from the oppressive and grating sounds of a city's warehouse area that I already do not want to be in and you can be sure functions on tenuous safety and garbage pay. This already harsh sonic experience is now reminding me of every very real anxiety I have about modern life all at once and making me have a far more harrowing experience than would ever tend to be expected or sought after. But all this negativity to say, me feeling like this unfortunately mean the band's goal has been achieved and, most importantly, I WILL eat the chili!
