Album Summary
Autobahn is the fourth studio album by German electronic music band Kraftwerk, released in November 1974 by Philips Records. The album marked several personnel changes in the band, which was initially a duo consisting of Florian Schneider and Ralf Hütter; later, the group added Klaus Röder on guitar and flute, and Wolfgang Flür on percussion. The album also completed the group's transition from the experimental krautrock style of their earlier work to an electronic pop sound consisting mostly of synthesizers and drum machines. Recording started at the group's own Kling Klang facility, but was predominantly made at Conny Plank's studio. Autobahn also includes lyrics and a new look for the group that was suggested by Emil Schult, an associate of Schneider and Hütter. Most of the album is taken up by the 22-minute "Autobahn", featuring lyrics by Schneider, Hütter, and Schult. The song was inspired by the group's joy of driving on Germany's autobahns, and recorded music that reflected a trip emulating the sounds of a vehicle. The album's release in West Germany saw little press attention. "Autobahn" was released as a single and received airplay at a Chicago radio station, leading it to spread across the United States. In 1975, the song became an international hit and Kraftwerk's first release of their music in the US. "Autobahn"'s success led to the band touring the United States with new member Karl Bartos, who would replace Roeder, followed by a tour of the United Kingdom. Initial reception to Autobahn was mixed; it received negative reviews from Rolling Stone and Village Voice's critic Robert Christgau who felt the music was inferior to earlier electronic music from Wendy Carlos and Mike Oldfield. Other critics found the track "Autobahn" hypnotic and arresting for its imagery of driving on the autobahn. Critics from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and Newsday included the album in their "Honorable Mentions" sections of their year-end lists. Later reception was unanimously enthusiastic; Simon Witter wrote in NME the album is of "enormous historical significance" and Simon Reynolds said the album is where Kraftwerk's music really starts to matter. Musicians of the 1970s and 1980s, including David Bowie, cited the album as a major influence.

Feels weird to say that this German electronic industrial pop album reminds me of listening to the Grateful Dead, but that's what I'm saying. Kraftwerk are like the Dead if, instead of getting high, they were really into keeping meticulous records of how many miles per gallon their cars were getting while driving driving driving down the Autobahn.
Passed me by in the background. As with the other kraftwerk album on here, it's clearly important in the history of music but it's almost more like an art instillation than an album.
Me on minute 3: lol what are they doing Me on minute 18: fun fun fun of da autobahn 😃
This album sounds like the number one influence of people composing background music for city building video games. I play a ton of city builders, but it’s not for the music. Still, a pretty good listen for early electronic.
I liked their last album I got on here but this one is boring.
Definitely interesting.
Is this considered music?
Love me some early German techno.
Van van van on the autobahn the rest of it wasn't really a vibe though. They didn't drive very fast.
I liked the experimental concept
pretty good experimental album from the early 70s Way ahead of its time
It's interesting but also like not interesting enough somehow, like 20 min is too much.
They did a fantastic job duplicating the monotony of driving on highways, very boring album that, similar to driving, needs more drugs while being dangerous to use drugs while partaking.
Nope.
genre defining
Interesting and cool.
I can’t even pretend to indulge shit like this anymore
Are we on the Autobahn?
Found the translation of the song titles more interesting than the music itself: Autobahn - motorway Kometenmelodie - comet melody Mitternacht - midnight Morgenspaziergang - morning walk
Well, the title track Autobahn is itself groundbreaking. The austere electronica and robotic vocals may not be for everyone, but that isn’t the point. The music has a traditional jazz like structure with solos and recurring themes, but of course the instruments are anything but traditional. It’s also important to remember how groundbreaking this was at a time where the instruments were far more primitive than today’s. The B side is interesting but suffers a bit from being a bit more ponderous. The excitement is lacking. Still a solid 5/5 from me.
Don’t personally love this style of electronic music and got bored very fast.

Another banger, this time from the band I saw at my first ever gig. Favourite track: Autobahn
If this album was made today I doubt if you would have had the noisy diesel at the beginning. Have you seen the price of it lately!! Instead just the whirr of an EV. So this should be in time considered a historical document of happier times and the joy of blasting down open roads instead of being driven around all in a line by autonomous vehicles. That word also summed up for me what Kraftwerk were about. But I was pleasantly surprised listening today to the full version of the title track. Like most of the rest of humanity I was previously only familiar with the single edit. The full version offers so much more developing the many themes making up the track but also revealing many new ones which makes you think that the music is not so robotic after all and there is a lot of human emotion behind it. Sonically this album must be heard on your best possible hifi rig. Just bought a new FiiO DAC and the way it separates and makes the this music bounce around your speakers is amazing. Worth buying the album for that alone. 4/5 10/10/26
Not what I expected, but in a mostly boring way. The gym was not the best place to listen to this.
This would be such a boring concert to go to
Kind of falls in with the other 2 albums, mesmerizing and listenable but ultimately doesn't do much for me.
I've been meaning to listen to this for years and it didn't disappoint. Good stuff
This one is a bit more abstract than the other albums I've heard by them. Enjoyed the title track quite a bit. Side 2 just faded into the background.
More Kraftwerk! I like them, but this isn't my favorite album from them.
Excellent album.
I love them
I quite liked the first and last songs, I am still thinking about them all together. The last song was an unexpected departure from the rest of the sounds being presented here, which I thought was fun.
I don't like this one as much as TEE, and thought I was going to give it 4 stars because I only remembered the title track. But the rest of the album is great too - love the flute and fishing pole type noises at the end.
I know they're supposed to be pioneers of electronic or something of the sort, but really bored with this album.
Some cool unique sounds across the entire album, but it wasn't as interesting as I was hoping it would be. Autobahn could have been like 1/5 the length. Found where some MGMT inspiration came from.
crazy these guys came out of the gate with this one. Doesn't get close to me to their peaks but the fact they started so concecptual is really cool. I'm confident this is one of those "grower" albums since the tracks are so long. I would love to listen to this driving on the autobahn.
This was a nice listen, lots of lovely bleeps and bloops :)
Maybe will appreciate this album more once I get a car I can drive. Very chill at least, which I can appreciate. Some good sounds on the second half too. 6/10
This was really interesting. Some songs definitely went on for too long and were very repetitive, but overall this was great! Liked Songs: "Autobahn" , "Kometenmelodie 2" , "Mitternacht" , "Morgenspaziergang"
Good, but not nearly as good as The Man-Machine.
I dont get it but it sounds nice
This is the 3rd Kraftwerk album I've heard on the list. I know I'm supposed to like them and I understand why. Their influence and importance to how music evolved throught the 70s and 80s can't be understated. I just don't think I would ever choose to put this album on.
First kraftwerk album for me! Interesting, very atmospheric electronic album, i like it. Bit repetitive but i suppose that’s kind of the point. Standouts are Autobahn and Cometenmelodie 2.
6/10 - the classic Kraftwerk sound, but can be a bit draining
Third Kraftwerk album on the list that I've listened to now, and I think they could probably just have kept 'The Man Machine'. I quite enjoyed the 22 minute 'Autobahn' opener on my drive in and although the remaining tracks were pleasant enough they weren't enough to write home about. Still, solid 3.
It’s just noise man I really don’t get this
Very interesting
Yeah, having fun on the autobahn! Electronic, Christmas-y, Epcot center jingle-y. I guess I’d call it an enjoyable sonic tour.
Pretty funky electronic album. Title track is a journey for sure. Just not sure the sound has aged as well as other electronic tracks/albums from this era.
No private session used for Spotify. It's a little too dynamic to be considered ambient music, meaning that the music is demanding your attention and not just there in the background. Not sure if I will go back to this album, but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
It deserves to be on the list for how influential it was to artists like Bowie, who started incorporating more electronic elements into their music. As something to just listen to? Worth doing once, but I wouldn't recommend repeat listens. It's a 3/5 for me) Wir fahren, fahren, fahren auf der Autobahn Wir fahren, fahren, fahren auf der Autobahn
Love how the synth patterns slowly change. Very repetitive but in a nice way.
Come along and ride on a fantastic voyage on the Autobahn.
++: Autobahn, Kometenmelodie 1, Kometenmelodie 2 +: Mitternacht, Morgenspaziergang 8,8/10
I can't help but feel that Kraftwerk are a bit like the emperor's new clothes. It's not offensive but I don't get the genius
The sounds are genuinely ahead of its time and it was a cool listening experience, it’s not something I would normally listen to and definitely worthy of the list, I did find it hard to get through and did find myself losing interest towards the end though.
Who doesn't like fahr'n auf der Autobahn? Kraftwerk are the bridger between pure sound experiments and the true melody to come. And even in its more bland, soundscape moments, there's a sense of melody and mood that the band had created early on that really makes all of this click. It's why they're enduring - they composed the music first, not just fucking around with the instruments. Danke, Kraftwerk!
Hard listen
I know it's a pioneer of the genre but it's a difficult listen today. I did enjoy that the first track reminded me of the music they play around the futuristic area in Epcot.
A full blown genre defining album. Heard the title track on radio Caroline way back. Loved it and still my favourite.
'Autobahn', the title track not the album, is not a great track, if say it's the weakest on the album. It's long and boring. The rest of the album is pretty good though and I enjoyed how it sort of felt like synth ambiance Standouts Kometenmelodie 2 Mitternacht 4/5
Intro is a little strange but picks up with some interesting musical progressions. It has some kinda strange retro futurism going on with the synth sounds that im digging. opening an album with a 20+ minute long song is for sure a bold choice. Very unique album and I can see how it inspired future electronic styles but just not for me.
I like electronic music and I like experimental music but this couldn't hold my attention. there were long gaps and silences and to me, that's not something I can engage with
Ja. Das güt.
Liked this a lot
Gotta love that Kraftwerk drum machine sound.
Great. As a boy, I heard the shorter version of Autobahn on the radio and, unlike my parents, loved it. Back then—or so it seems to me now—you could still experience that kind of feeling while driving on German highways. If Kraftwerk were to try today to translate the current driving experience into sound, the result would be a cacophony. Incidentally, whenever I hear “Autobahn,” Smetana’s symphonic poem “The Moldau” always comes to mind. 5/5
1.8
I think one has to understand the fact that this album was made 1974 before listening to it. At that time it was a revolution (although there had been a few others as well), today nothing special. Clearly the song Autobahn is the most prominent and well-known song on the album. And after listening to the album I am not surprised (I only knew Autobahn from the album before listening). The other ones are more less songs in which the band is playing around with the (at that time) very modern electronics music possibilities and it sounds like that. It is an important album for the history of pop/rock music and therefore a valuable choice for this list.
I got genuine chills listening to this. It feels like I'm playing Cruisin' USA and I'm only driving straight, and I can feel the wind flowing through my hair. The rest of the album feels like a weird one-man show that you only get to see in a crazy apartment in Brooklyn. highlights: Autobahn
kraftwerk is one of those rare bands that i don't really like that much but admire nonetheless for their music/work. progressive and weird!
Even at 22 minutes plus to open the album, I really liked the title track. It was hypnotic, and I felt like I was along for a late-night, high-speed ride, lost in the monotony of the highway. The other tracks I didn't enjoy as much.
Autobahn takes you on a little journey and then the second half of the album is there too. Like with much Kraftwerk, I like it but it doesn't go in my normal listening rotation. 3.5
Less interesting than the other Kraftwerk
Not nearly as annoying as The Man Machine, but it still was pretty dismal
Quirky and new at the time. I was in the “it’s Weird” camp. Still there today.
que mierda es esto? chil
hated this
Kocham Kraftwerk, a gdybym miała polecić tę płytę, to poleciłabym ją jako idealną ścieżkę dźwiękową do czytania Dzienników Gwiazdowych Lema 🚀
If Ross from friends were German and slightly more musically gifted.
No me gustó.
I love EDM but...
An interesting listen and definitely something that should be experienced. A worthy addition, but also - not something I'll ever reach for willingly or want to listen to again. The vocals on the 22 minute Autobahn song are so flat, it ruins the experience.
This was unexpected. I knew I had definitely heard this before but I wasn’t prepared for the cascade of sensory memories this kicked off. Headphones on, pressed Play and started listening to the stereo effects as the driver gets in, the car starts, and the sound moves from right ear to left, then it suddenly hits me that I remember my Dad getting me to listen to this through his Wharfedale headphones and telling me to imagine the journey. So beneath the memory of those heavy white headphones on my five-year-old head, with their plush leathery padding around the ears, I have my memories of my imagination of our old Ford Capri with its coarse red fabric trim and dotted ceiling, listening to the whump of streetlights flashing by on a motorway somehow embedded in musical form. This was an absolute transcendent experience for me, although the magic waned a little beyond the title track.
Para la epoca es descomunal la verdad. Actualmente envejece mal un 2,5/5. Teniendo en cuenta lo anterior es un 4/5.
One of the most influential groups of all time, you really cannot underplay Kraftwerk’s importance to electronic music and music at large. Incredible that this was made in the early 70s really. That being said, it’s not going to be an album Id return to all of the time
So, this is the third Kraftwerk album I've gotten on here, and they are truly an exception within their genre. The only electronic music I can find enjoyment from - all 3 albums.
Ahead of its time
Not sure what to say about this really. It is what it is.
Amazing for what they were first creating. Not that amazing tune wise.
