Reviews (page 2 of 8)

Title track is actually pretty enjoyable. Some of the other stuff is kinda challenging. Definitely an Influential and important record and better than the other kraftwerk album. I hope we don’t get any more kraftwerk though I think we get it. 2.5

This was ok, but felt very one-note.

Didn’t hate it but thought it would be good for a claymation project.

Love it.

I don’t usually listen to this style of music, but this was ok! The universe is hilarious to give this album to me in the morning I have a three hour drive.

I’ve always heard of them being influential to some artists I like, but never listened to them. It was okay as background music, but I think this just doesn’t stand up since electronic music has come so far since this time.

Fun fun fun

One great song very long and technical if they made a haynes manual into an album this is what it would sound like.

Heard to concentrate on whilst I was working, but the bits I tuned into were good.

This album is surprisingly not what I thought it would be. It’s an adventure, but in the same way that a trip to the grocery store is an adventure: some people get excited over it, and others don’t. I was the latter. Songs like “Morgenspaziergang” and the two parts of “Kometenmelodie” do redeem this album, though. They’re soundscapes that just feel good to listen to. But, the album’s 22 minute opener of a title track really threw me off of my rocker. And that’s why I think this album gets a 58% or a 2.9/5. Fav: Nothing really stuck out to me here. Least Fav: “Autobahn”

Perhaps this would hit different if I had experience driving on the Autobahn. Update 5.20.25: Ok so I was having a really stressful day the day that I got this album last year, and I always felt like I didn't give this the attention it deserved. After getting a different Kraftwerk album today that I really enjoyed, I decided to revisit Autobahn. I didn't enjoy it as much as The Man-Machine, but it still deserves a bump from a 2 to a 3. Pretty cool stuff in here, and so far ahead of its time.

Overall, I liked this and thought it was well-done. I don't think it's memorable enough to really come back to, and I definitely didn't love it any more than anything I would listen to. 7/10 Favorite Songs: Autobahn, Morgenspaziergang No least favorite songs

Never thought I'd ever listen to a 22 minute song that essentially just says "We are driving on the Autobahn".

I always enjoyed Kraftwerk for doing their own thing and this album feels quite unique. Authobahn (the song) while not their most energetic song is still a fun listen and feels like it is filled with tech optimism. The rest was ok too. I just feel that Kraftwerk come into their own in their later albums with their more energetic songs (and lyrics!). Still as a hint of what is to come it was a fun listen.

Interesting. Made my day feel like I was in a 70s PBS science special.

Too much electronic and abstract for me.

This bring me back to high school art class. The production is great and the song design is top notch. I'm not a into some of the extended parts and it can make it hard to focus on three music at times.

This was a cool album conceptually. Try to capture a number of certain feelings musically. Most notable driving on the autobahn. I’m not sure how well executed it was, as I don’t think some of the songs really inspired the right feelings. Especially Autobahn. Mitternacht and Morgenspaziergang I felt did very well. Probably not an album I’ll revisit, but I really like the concept

Why did I think kraftwek was a more modern group? This album/band is from the 70s! After oxygene maybe I'm a sucker for old school electronic music. This albums feels like a good prototype of other albums I'd enjoy, 3*. Enjoyed: the groove of autobahn (but then it got weird around halfway through. Such a goofy song)

This band was groundbreaking at the time, but the genre has come a long way since then. Still, this album is easy on the ears and fun on the Autobahn. Favorite tracks: Kometenmelodie 1 & 2

Was a bit too avant-garde for me and a bit early for me to appreciate. I get its significance and that of Kraftwerk but that doesn’t necessarily mean I also would return to it.

I was very confused when listening to this album. It was more of a background type of music, that you would enjoy having on while doing something that requires you to focus, as it doesn't really have too much singing, or at least you don't notice it at a lower volume. It was... a different type of experience and I feel like it's aimed at specific people, but it sounds like it would mainly be used as background music in movies.

Better than Gary Newman! This would sound much better played in the MGM grand arena during the first set break of a Phish show. Beautiful in some places. Stark in others. There's only so much intentionally de-humanized music one can handle before you just want to radically abandon your biological programming and commit a random act of unfiltered imperfection. So yeah, I'm typing this sentence with my pants down in front of a large window with 5 chickens on the other side. It's ok, they get it. I'm more akin to the hens than to Kraftwerk. We're all naked pecking around in a heavy rain. Kraftwerk is driving a car. B-

Kind of mesmerizing but it felt more like background music.

Not really my bag

The fist song is eternal. I felt like i was on windows Fav songs:Kometenmelodie 2 B_

I think I'm meant to like Autobahn more than I do. First things first, it's genuinely remarkable that this album is 50 (FIFTY) years old, the sound is so much newer than that and could only have been revolutionary in its time. I get that it's also been hugely influential too, and that has some weight, but the actual music doesn't give me what I want from this genre, which as I've mentioned before really needs some power, some acceleration in bpm and a lot more euphoria. We get that a bit here and there, most notably in Kometenmelodie 2, but it's a record that leaves me wanting a lot more than it gives me. Also Mitternacht is fucking awful. Probably a high 2, needed more from the back half of the album to get a 3 or higher.

Weird and very repetitive. Not really my thing...

Surprised by the pan pipes on this ngl

It"s ok for background listening.

Housecleaning music at best

I know this is a historically important album but it was a little brutal getting thru this.

I can only conclude that two Kraftwerk albums in ten days is too much. If you’re a nihilist in the business if kidnapping young trophy wives (in the parlance of our times) this might be your jam. Otherwise pretty much unlistenable.

fun fun fun off the autobahn. I know this walked so Electric as a genre could run but idk I am just kinda bored with it.

I knew Kraftwerk only from name and that they were revolutionary in their time. For the 70’s I can imagine this was something new. Autobahn the song is very long but in some way I keep listening. After that the album dies out and gets boring for me.

This whole album was exceedingly avant-garde. The first track is 23 minutes of music prominently featuring highway sounds. Subsequent tracks are shorter, but somehow feel even more experimental. Strange audio samples are littered everywhere, though it should be noted that the more musical parts of the album are actually pleasant to listen to.

I'm sure this was a very influential album back in it's day.

Interesting music....it sounds like a soundtrack to a medieval story. Pleasant enough to listen to as I was reading...quick and short tracks...not bad.

It’s ok

There are some Kraftwerk tunes like 'Radioactivity' and 'Das Model', to name a few, that still holds up well today, but they are not on this album. Kraftwerk's influence on electronic music can't be understated enough, but sadly they are also a group whose music don't hold up at all today - and this album is a perfect example of that. If the first track was 3 minutes or so, it would have been endlessly better. But 22 minutes? I get that it is thematical, but come on. 'Morgenspaziergang' has is ok as a lullaby, but not much more than that. In general I think it's cool that they have tried to imagine how a certain theme might sound if done only with electronic sounds, such as 'Kometenmelodie' or 'Morgenspaziergang', but the problem is that it just isn't that good or fun to listen to in my opinion. I will give this album a 2 star rating ONLY out of respect for Kraftwerk and their legacy, but if this showed up today out of the blue in 2024 it'd be a 1 star hands down. And this comes from someone who listens to and loves electronic music.

It's okay. I normally like most of Kraftwerk's stuff, but this was just okay. I could listen to it as it was pretty well suited to a background electronic ambience kind of situation. I doubt I'd seek it out of its own accord though.

No. 60/1001 Autobahn 3/5 (4x) Kometenmelodie 1 2/5 Kometenmelodie 2 2/5 Mitternacht 1/5 Morgenspaziergang 1/5 Average: 2,25 Title track was quite enjoyable, even though this is not my genre. The last two songs I would not categorize as music but just random sounds.

I was thinking of giving this a two until the last song when it started off as a hearing test.

This felt more like I was screening movie soundtrack montages than music. Not for me.

Oh dear. Not for me. Not at all. But clearly very important to many artists whose work I do love, so thanks for that, Kraftwerk.

Bleep bloop blop

Raisa said she can make most of these sounds with her “tummy” after a good meal. I don’t disagree 😂 Barely getting through the first song (which is 22 minutes long!) think I’ll move on to a podcast instead this morning.

Erotrash electronica.

Muzak that asks "Would you like to touch my monkey?" No Dieter, I would not like to touch your monkey or listen to this monotonous crapola.

Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for this but I thought it was pretty shite. 1/5

Didn't make it all the way through...little too off for me.

I find this all a bit souless and dull to be honest. Also do we need a 22 minute opening track? Complete lack of love and sounds like the soundtrack to a shite arthouse movie. Good cover tbf. 1/5

Not my genre

Electronic music is definitely not my place. However, this album is very good in simulate the annoying of long road trips (at least).

I get it's pioneering but these seem more like experimental recordings over something you'd want to listen to just to listen to. 2/10.

Very bland for my taste. Maybe for its time, it was something never done before, I dont know. Just finished listening to it and I completely forgot about it already. 1 star, there's not intereresting substance (for me at least) and I wouldn't listen to it again.

That's a nah from me dog. This was revolutionary at one point, but that was a long time ago.

Kraftwerk gets too much grief for being the weird German techno wizards. They were ahead of their time by decades. Without THIS album, we don't have techno and house and Goa and Dubstep. Hell, maybe not even new age. Yes, Autobahn goes on WAY longer than it needs to. Is this a perfect album? No. Does it deserve respect? Hell yes. Just strap in and take the drive. Go down a back country road and get hypnotized by the looping. Let it flow. My Rating: 5/5

I think I prefer Man Machine, but this is still amazing. Sounds so free and playful despite the obvious limits of early electronic production.

perfect!

I am a big electronica/ techno fan. It is "my" genre. Of any sort of music I consistently like it surrounds this base: from deep house to trip hop to big beat... and everything in between. Kraftwerk is canon and a big part of starting it all, they are a huge part of the head table and are, in my view, essential listening (and knowing) if you have even a mild interest in any sort of synthesized music or electronica. They are, if not gods, at least demi-gods, so there is that!

Futuristic, ambient, chill, exciting.

sometimes on this site i listen to a rock or punk record whose historic significance completely goes over my head. this one didn't! i rediscovered this gem and could see how mind-blowing and influential it was for the time. imagine listening to this in the 70s! but even beyond the historic aspect of this, it's incredible how well the music held up. still a fantastic album to listen to while you're driving or chilling. i should listen to this more.

A stellar album, after their early and more experimental albums (which are also brilliant btw), Kraftwerk have now fully embraced both the sound and the image that would define them. Autobahn is an electronic classic, an album that would influence so much of what was to follow. Sadly I was unable to get tickets for the recent UK tour, a friend went to the Royal Albert Hall and tells me that it was a superb evening.

Genius. What an album -a truly remarkable work.

Me encanta, lo amo los he escuchado mucho.

While I find it the most boring of Kraftwerk's albums, you can't deny the importance. It forever changed music as we know it

not a single other album of its genre perfectly represents electronica better than this. master class in synth. german engineering in audio format. brilliant. 10/10 FAVOURITE SONGS: AUTOBAHN, MORGENSPAZIERGANG

A pinnacle album, very much pointing the way to the future.

Genius. People are still building albums and tracks off the backs of ideas that they created. Cynics should also remember that all of this is being done without the existence of digital audio workstations, sequencers, samplers, midi, or any modern day drum machines. They used primitive analog drum machines that are not what you think they are. I don't think many people quite understand how much effort had to be put into pulling this sort of artistic endeavor off. This is the album that inspired much of David Bowie and Brian Eno's best work, and almost every single synth based work that you have heard just about anywhere for the past 52 years. Take a trip, put Kraftwerk in your veins.

I prefer Computer World but all Kraft is good werk.

This album sets its parameters clearly, defines what is going to be about, and completely fulfills its promise. No fluff here. An amazing work. I was hoping someday someone could do for trains and airplanes what Kraftwerk has done for the Autobahn. +1 star for lyrics in multiple languages.

Alright. Thats it. I’m packing my bags and I’m moving to Germany now. All jokes aside, This is a good example of German electronic music. And not just Autobahn, all of Kraftwerk. Neu! could have learned a few things from this album when they made neu 75. Great job Kraftwerk. Some may say that this album is a great craft-work! I don’t think I can put this on the same level as Trans Europe Express and I haven’t listened to The Man Machine yet. Especially as I don’t find Mitternacht to be that appealing. That song is kind of like Moonchild off of In the Court of the Crimson King. I will say that Morgenspaziergang, which translates to “Morning Stroll” in english sounds exactly like a morning stroll, and I find that to be the most be the most beautiful song on the album. I’m debating on whether to give Autobahn 4 stars or 5 stars. Three of the tracks are very forgettable, but the other two alone beat most of the three star albums that have already been generated for me. I’m going to give this 5 stars though.

I’d give this a 6 if I could

Weird mix of stuff but works. Have to try it on shrooms

Im once again getting the pleasure to review the perfectly wholesome futurism of Kraftwerk. This is probably my second favorite Kraftwerk album of all time and it’s just nonstop creativity. And I know this is basically cliched to say about kraftwerk but they were just so crazy ahead of their time. And also at the same time it has the ability to be completely timeless. It also goes without saying but this album is a no skip album, just pure bliss.

Hell yeah, the ultimate driving song. Autobahn is a transformative piece of music, 25 minutes of immersive 70's German synth bliss. It sounds very robotic as Kraftwork does, but so great. The rest of the album doesn't really match up to that. but it still has some good moments on the second side and the entire side feels like the comedown from Autobahn itself.

An absolutely unreal album, it’s beautiful, it’s perfect. Kraftwerk really fucking changed the world of music. 5.0/5.0 Best Song: Kometenmelodie 2

Easy 5, could listen to it forever, every song is perfect. I love how electronic it starts and the way it ends with the flutes, feeling very pastoral, like going back in time. It could be one of the all time best albums, it's just absolutely genius, blows my mind it came out in 1974.

FAHREN FAHREN FAHREN

Tectastic!

A group and album ahead of it's time. Both innovative and musically appealing. Driving home at midnight was never better with their wonderfully simplistic approach to making music.

I had fun on the Autobahn!

Really dug this because it made me uncomfortable at times and reminded me of other experiences. Autobahn sounded like something they would play at Epcot and the others sounded like I was in a creepy sci-fi movie.

one of the best, ever ever ever. still feels like this fresh and vital lightning bolt, a disorganized optimism honed out of a sense of Dead Culture (damn i wonder why krautrock is still so relatable!), which kind of sets the tempo for a lot of kraftwerk in general....its kinda Sad And Spooky that we're robots...but its also Cool that we're robots. theres just enough instability (esp on the B side, which is genuinely just as good and who's reception i will never understand) to feel astute, but also enough aesthetic appreciation to really humanize the desires present here....The Future as depicted by kraftwerk is a fight between whether technology will expand our possibilities or limit them, with the needle never quite coming down fully on either side. kraftwerk kinda best band ever and i love so many of their albums dearly but this is the one that feels the most coherently and fully like A World...like all their future albums take place Inside the places and situations that have been sketched out here. special attention must be played to the closing track and its flutes....i kinda dont even have a fully articulated read on what it Means to me, but it just grabs me by the stomach...thats album construction, thats artmaking, thats reaching towards the unknown right there!!!!

I really liked that! I hadn't listened to early Kraftwerk before, I had the CD called "The Mix" which I really enjoyed and this was a pleasant surprise.

My 2nd favorite Kraftwerk album (Tour de France is my favorite)

It's a classic without which the electronic music scene might look very different.

Very electronic. Very futuristic and synth-y. I really like it. The 22 minute title track Autobahn is the best on the album. Very futuristic- sounding for 1974.

I tried to find a reason not to give this album a 5*... but I just couldn't find any. I love pretty much everything about it - the experimental aspects, the minimalism, the simple but efficient hooks, the eerie atmosphere, the retro-futurist vibe... It's like a dreamier, more accessible version of Neu (and of Kraftwerk's own earlier records). Half a century has passed since Autobahn was released ; it's not the sound of the future anymore, but the sound of a future that could have been. It felt like a lucid dream, driving through snowy landscapes dotted with weird machines escaped from an alternative, futuristic version of the 80s reminiscent of Simon Stalenhag's work. It's so trippy and peaceful that I can play it on a loop. Bonus points for contributing to the birth of popular electronic music. Kraftwerk's first and second record are even more interesting in my opinion - but let's be honest, they're so experimental and deconstructed that they were (sadly) never gonna become mainstream music. Autobahn played an essential role in helping this kind of sound gain wider acceptance. 9/10

Welp the androids did it again

This is a hard record to review. Most have some understanding of it's tremendous impact on pretty much all electronic music that came after it. I first listened to this album on tape decades ago, probably in the mid 90s. Back then, I thought of it as a pleasant bit of music history, kitchy and enjoyable but not a favorite. Age and better listening equipment has changed my original assessment of Autobahn. It's a beautiful record in its own right. The long title track of the album is the signature anchoring piece, but I think it's quirky accessibility actual masks the music depth of the other compositions, especially the electronically mimicked natural landscapes and flute that close the album. I usually get the most detail out of my end of day listens of good files through headphones. And while this record does sound great that way, oddly enough it was the hi Fi listen that revealed the impact of Autobahn. A good digital copy, proper EQ, and highish volume suit this record, especially in the quieter, more delicate sections. Essentially, I always respected Autobahn, but felt that this record was highly influential but not really relevant, especially compared to Minimum-Maximum, the beast of the live record Kraftwerk released in 2005. However a few critical listens still had surprise textures that still feel unique to this record even after all these years. Five stars.

Very Interesting, as always, these guys might be the goats of electronic music. I think this is much different to their later stuff, as its much more rooted in Krautrock stuff, than the more 'pop' (vaguely) direction they went in later in the 70s and 80s. Its got a few live instruments, before they seemingly fully committed to electronic sounds, like flutes, pianos and guitars. Autobahn the song is obviously the main masterpiece of the album, and feels quite proggy, at least structurally, not as much sound wise. Some of the synth sounds they managed to get on here are just insane, especially stuff like the textures at the start of the last song. But, all throughout. I think they loved to commit to a concept, like the German traditional 'futuristic' image on Autobahn, which feels like it could be a advert song or something. Not really any downsides, just a timeless masterpiece, which is so unique in certain ways it even overshadows stuff inspired by it. Favourite songs: all. Overall 9/10

Danke, Florian & Ralf.

I'm a bit of a synth nerd, so this 1974 effort is a treasure. Oozes innovation, combination of proper talented musicians and cutting edge tech. My 1972 VW Kombi was never gutsy enough for the autobahn but I can still get the motoring vibes from the lengthy title track.

A masterpiece

Yassss that's the stuff. I'm vibin' on the road

Ultimate classic

The beginning of what the pop world would see as 'electronic music'. Sure there were other rock bands that used synthesizers like the Mothers of Invention, Sun Ra (I said rock bands but as a synth guy I would be hard pressed to mention who Moog gave their first minimoog to) or Silver Apples and 20th century composers that incorporated electronic music with avant-garde results but Kraftwerk were perhaps the first to make it all make sense in the formal dictionary definition of pop music (for the 70s). It's a bit more approachable than The Stooges we'll say. It's nothing short of an iconic record, but I'll shout out the other side of the album that doesn't get nearly the same amount of attention as Autobahn the song. Kometenmelodie 1+2 are dope

It’s not their best but you can see just how left field these guys were back in 1974/5. It remains a classic to this day

Great album

This was exactly what I needed today.

Not but favourite genre but undeniably groundbreaking in 1974. You should listen to Kraftwerk if you like electronica or simple, atmospheric music. I would suggest not to expect mindblowing songwriting or melodies. I don't really like Kraftwerk. I find it boring, repetitive and lifeless. It sounds like a parody of German electronic music. However: this music represents an utterly inventive use of technology for 1974. That the only real instruments present are human voices is what sets this apart, even if I find that to turn me off entirely. I have never liked Kraftwerk. This is also 5/5 album for anyone interested in the history of popular music or just fans of electronic music production. It's impossible to overstate its influence and importance. My aesthetic distaste for it (not completely! But mostly...) is irrelevant to its essentialness.

The first 3 tracks are nigh-perfect, the last 2 I didn't love as much. 4* album in a vacuum but 5* when factoring in its influence and importance.

Chill 70s German beats to study/relax to.

Groundbreaking and extraordinary. Still resonates today.

The beginning of german Electronic music!!!

People in 2125 will LOVE this album! Maybe as much as I love it circa now!

Autobahn is brilliant, yes, but it’s also the sonic equivalent of watching minimalist furniture slowly arrange itself. Rating: 4/5 Short Review: The beginning of everything. So cold, it’s hot. Favorite Track: “Autobahn” – because there’s only one road and it’s 22 minutes long.

Fun Fun Fun Fun on the M62

Probably a 4, but the fact that this came out in 1974 and is such an influential album to all future electronica music, I'll give it a 5.

So cool. I feel like daft punk sampled them or were inspired by them.

A game changer. Admittedly one that spawned OMD, but let's gloss over that. I was fascinated by Kraftwerk as a child, and the notion that songs didn't have to be about humans, or, indeed, emotion. Love this album so much.

I have been listening to this for years now. It never ages. A fantastic album

Without this half the music I like doesn’t exist. 3rd track peaked as the plane I was on took off and I ascended into heaven.

I've never listened to this before, and now I regret that. I love this spacey synthey old school electronica. Will 100% listen again.

Incredible

This is such a classic. Kraftwerk is just starting to find its stride with this album, which sets the stage for the masterpieces to come. I enjoyed revisiting this from the Autobahn drive at the beginning to the morning walk at the end.

yes, great! “autobahn” the track could be a separate album itself!

Shimmering perfection.

Stilbildande album.

synth-tastic

One of the most influential electronic albums ever made. The title track is magnificient, hypnotic, and melodic - it's something I will never get tired of. Forget the 3-minute radio edit, just relax and enjoy the album version. The rest of the album are instrumental electronic tracks, and the album closing Morgenspaziergang is a nice electroacoustic song. Kraftwerk was decades ahead of their time and while this album may not be their best in their stellar catalogue, it is certainly their most influential and thus automatically deserves 5 stars.

I guess these guys are the godfathers of electronic music? I love it! It isn't particularly awesome by today's standards, but in retrospect it is groundbreaking and was probably mind-blowing when it was released. This is the first of a genre and paved the way for countless groups, so for that it will get a 5 from me.

Undoubtedly Kraftwerk didn’t deliberately set out to be the blueprint of all electronic pop to come when they made this album but blueprint and influence it became. Kometenmelodie 2 has clear echoes forwards into much of UK synth pop of the late seventies/ early eighties, while I can envision Bowie and Eno absorbing Mitternacht and coming up with sides 2 of Low and Heroes. And that’s without citing the 22 minutes of glorious Autobahn itself. What’s incredible is that on this re-listen it all still sounds fresh and modern. It has a deserved place on this 1001 list as it does on many others.

Wikipedia says this album influenced Bowie, that checks out

Driving 130km/h into the future. Fun fun fun on the autobahn.

Mega godt???

Still a lovely album. A friend of mine gifted this to me way back and it quickly became one of my favorite study soundtracks when I was in college. Easy to listen to, easy to enjoy. Every track is distinct here. All of them contribute. Everything is in its right place. I dig it.

An iconic and memorable masterpiece.

A real masterpiece which is referenced by so many bands as their influencial album.

Very good music for getting your flow state.

According to my parents, 2-year-old me already LOVED Kraftwerk (And Der Plan and many more German synth/electronica. I fell asleep to it. The love has never gone.

I bloody love Kraftwerk. It seems ages since I’ve been generated an album that I know well, and this is one that I have the vinyl for. It’s so atmospheric. The actual music itself feels quite minimalistic at times, but it allows every part to shine through with clarity. It’s certainly not for everyone, being five tracks long and 43 minutes, but this is right up there for me. If I had to choose, I’d probably pick The Man Machine over this, but I genuinely do very much enjoy both.

Legendary. Hard to listen to objectively as I know it well and love it and, even though it was released several years before I was born, it somehow still captures an age of believe and possibility and progression. Unlike whatever *this* is right now.

When I got this album I groaned because I really didn't want to sit though another repetitious early electronic album from Kraftwerk (Trans-Europe Express was not for me, and Man-Machine had some highs and lows). But honestly, Autobahn is clearly head and shoulders above the rest. The instrumentals and electronics are constantly changing and shifting, with a minimal use of vocals (which significantly decreases the repeatitious fatigue heard on other albums). Kometenmelodie 1&2 are perfect follow ups to the gargantuan track Autobahn, with #2 resulting in a moment of catharsis from 30 mins of buildup. Mitternacht is a great short little industrial transition to the fancifal and gentle closer that is Morgenspaziergang. I have no complaints, this album is very impressive. 5/5

The quintessential Kraftwerk album. I listened to this three times today. An absolute classic.

Quite possibly the greatest driving album ever. Komentenmelodie 2 has great tension and release. Morenspaziergang is just a beautiful way to end it.

How is it that this record is 50 years old and yet still sounds like what I imagine people in the future should listen to? Autobahn conjures up images of a bright, shiny utopia, the sort sung about by Donald Fagen in I.G.Y. and although the future we’re currently living in is much more dystopian than Kraftwerk imagined, their sound is still so essential that it’s not difficult to imagine that in another 50 years, with a bit of luck, we might be living in a future where the optimism of Autobahn’s sound has come to fruition

peak kraftwerk i don't know many electronic albums both as exhilarating and as pleasant as this one, especially not from the 70s best song: kometenmelodie 2 worst song: n/a

Autobahn is genre defining genius. I love Kraftwerk and I’m very happy to have gotten to this. Kraftwerk are electronic music pioneers, and hearing music like this that was made in 1974 blows my mind. This sounds modern despite being the fact that it’s 50 years old, happy anniversary by the way! I think that shows how ahead of their time and influential Kraftwerk were. The title track of Autobahn is an odyssey into electronic soundscapes and atmospheres. It really is such an amazing track. It’s really hypnotic with its arpeggios and synth work. The chorus is in the song is memorable as well and is still stuck in my mind, haha. While listening to this, I was afraid that the behemoth title track would overshadow the other tracks here. I’m very happy to say it doesn’t! The electronic atmospheres and soundscapes are carried over from the title track. Kometenmelodie 1 is a moody electronic ambient song, and Kometenmelodie 2 is a fun dance song! Mitternacht is an interesting experimental track, a little bit like Kometenmelodie 1 but more moody. I dig it! The flute, piano, and guitar were really unexpected on Morgenspaziergang, haha. I still really like it and I thought it was a fitting end to the album. Autobahn is a revolutionary and influential album in music, Kraftwerk really hit it out of the ballpark here. Even if you don’t like this sort of stuff, you still have to appreciate what Kraftwerk were doing here and what they contributed. I highly recommend this one if you like electronic stuff. Rest in peace Florian Schneider. 🫡

No one parallels the playful discovery of electronic instruments like Kraftwerk

Kraftwerk is awesome. I've only been listening to them for about a decade but I really like the albums I've heard. Thoroughly enjoyable for me.

Find this boring? Guess what? You're boring!

Very innovative for it's time. It's hard to believe that this album was made 50 years ago. Its a really good listen

This album is definitely from before Kraftwerk went in a more pop direction. It has a more repetitive and minimalist approach that really sucks you in and takes you on an imaginary journey. The beats are subtle, more there to complement the ambient soundscape of the album than to drive the rhythm.

This is without doubt one of the greatest records ever produced. It influenced every modern pop music that one can imagine. Evenerything that is only slightly electronic can be traced back to this record.

Excellent

Definitely not going to be for everyone - some people will be looking for the ausfahrt - but I really enjoyed this one. I'm fond of early electronic music but I'm only familiar with a little of it, so it's nice to be guided to this. I've also got fond memories of Autobahn travel, so it's a winning combo. There's basically two parts here: the heart of the album is "Autobahn," a 22-minute tribute to the German highway system; then there's 4 other tracks. "Autobahn" is a wonderful listen; it's really successful at what it's trying to evoke. I like the way it moves through different "sound scenes" while continuously returning to its main theme. Among the B-side tracks, the highlight is definitely "Kometenmelodie 2," a beautiful song that could end up being one of my favorite electronic instrumental pieces ever. To me it conveys a really optimistic, forward-looking mood. None of the others come near "Kometenmelodie 2." I don't think they're unpleasant overall, just not as memorable and at parts some of them dip into sounds that are slightly grating. "Mitternacht" evokes being shackled in a dungeon next to a leaky pipe. Regardless, if you add "Autobahn" and "Kometenmelodie 2" together you have over 28 minutes of excellence so I think I'm comfortable rating this a 5.

Incredible work

This is a great album for electronic music. Its influence is hard to overestimate. When you listen to it, you feel like you are on a journey with sudden moods and this journey ends with a very beautiful song "Morgenspaziergang"

It never ceases to amaze me that an album released 50 years ago, recorded using instruments made from spare electronics and tin foil, held together with string and duct tape, still sounds fresh and startlingly modern. The highlight is the title track, recreating a trip on an Autobahn through the medium of motorik beats and painstakingly crafted sound effects. This is a genre defining album, influencing artists from Gary Numan to Afrika Bambaataa. Stunning

The fact that this turns 50 this year is mind-boggling; they were ahead of their time and produced a really ground-braking record.

Revolutionary when this album came out, and I still listen to it.

Can't be five, but is 4.75 so is five. Nothing else to add.

thinner than their later albums.

Desert island disc?

Fantastisch album, vooral het nummer Autobahn. Visionair, en gewoon echt goed.

I think this is my favorite album from Kraftwerk. So unique! This is the music you get when you turn on the radio on the highway to the land of dreams!

This album can be really pretty in parts. I'm not sure why this isn't as celebrated as TRANS EUROPA EXPRESS. I mean, that's all I really hafta say: I enjoyed this one **way more** than I did the other one. And people complain about this being repetitive? Please, like it doesn't evolve on itself. I swear...

I’m surprisingly at a 5. I deeply ripped into Kraftwerk for what I perceived as minimalism on Trans-Europe Express. I haven’t gone back to the album to see if my opinion has changed, but this album did way more for me than Trans-Europe Express. For me, this just has a way more sonically pleasing soundscape, it’s got a good variety of tone and instrumentation, I think the synth work evolves throughout each track in a way that doesn’t feel like an FL Studio sample loop on repeat for 6 minutes, and ultimately, everything here just felt like had more character and more groove to it. There was way more depth in just Autobahn by itself than the entirety of Trans-Europe Express for me. The back half of the album is really nice too; I love the dichotomy between Kometenmelodie 1 and 2, and while Mitternacht kinda fell into the repetition of Trans-Europe Express, it never got gratingly long to be an issue. Morgenspaziergang is really nice too; I love the transition from the synth work into the real instruments, and it does feel like a proper end to this journey on the Autobahn. Ultimately, this album DID have the scenery changes that I felt weren’t present on Trans-Europe Express, and I enjoyed my ride on the Autobahn much, much more. This is 43 minutes of super chill music, and I liked every single second of it. It’s a 5. A damn good one, at that.

ja i love it, au to bahn

Groovy, ground-breaking, packed with tunes, sonic gems and great rhythms. Still a great listen.

Impossible to overstate how influential Kraftwerk were. Not my favourite but every album rules except Techno Pop. Teens hate this, robot music is man music. If you one starred this AND Black Sabbath's Vol. 4; banned from listening to music.

Excellent! A work of genius

This is a masterpiece! I read somewhere that this band singlehandedly ignited the electronic music revolution. If you listen to this album, I suspect you will understand why.

Side A is great. Side B is great.

It actually sounds like I'm in an autobahn! The long, boring cruise through the highway. The smooth and cool feeling when speeding across it. The oddly melancholic feeling of it at night. Amazing. A really artful, immersive album overall.

Not my favorite Kraftwerk record, but still a stone cold classic.

Have been listening to this record since its release ever though I’m a rock and roll guy. Very advanced when you’re reminded that it’s analog/pre-digital.

Kraftwerk! What else is there to say? Pioneers of electronic music, influenced generations of musicians, even today. This album was their breakthrough internationally. The title track Autobahn was unconventional, kind of mezmerising and despite its length not boring at all. Made me relisten all their other albums.

Interesting. Autobahn sounds like the German version of Fun fun fun

Not being a Kraftwerk fan this surprised me. Knowing that Kraftwerk are the pioneers of electronic music makes you really listen to this. And it was amazing. 5/5.

Excellent. Went and found more

Great! Kind of cozy trance music to do a slow hobby to that doesn’t need a lot of concentration. Cozy to spooky to fairyland? With little bit of Rocky Horror vibes thrown in

Fun fun fun on the autobahn.

i likey das kraftwerk

Wow. Hadn't heard it before. I've wasted my life

It's Autobahn.

Beautiful soundscape, a bit slow and repetitive but that's likely because it's not really meant for active listening, also the last track has the most animal crossing 1 am flute of all time.

Great album!

Revolutionary

i see why this is a top 1001 album

Outstanding. My only complaint is that I wasn’t around in 1974 to have my mind blown even more than it is 49 years later.

wow. just incredible, i’d fully believe this was released recently. just shockingly ahead of its time, and an amazing album regardless.

It starts with morning (on autobahn), drives in nightime (the sessions of Autobahn track) then stops & chills at midnight (Comet Melody 1 &2, Mitternacht) and wakes up to walk on the dawn as the sun rising (Morning Walk). This album begins a new phase for the band, as they totally emphasizes on synthesizer through pop sensibilities onward & influence on almost every electronic-pop vibe that came later. Fav Track: Autobahn

Just some guys cruising down the highway. Maybe the real friends were the musical genres we defined along the way.

The greatest homage to roads since John Denver.

Great to have this come on after their progeny, The Prodigy. Undefeated by their successors, they infuse so much sentimentality into the kind of soundfront that goes on to be associated so much with dehumanization, industriousness, etc

I can appreciate it for what it was at the time but it's not my type of music.

I'm a big fan of Kraftwerk and have always enjoyed Autobahn (and the idea of driving on one one day). I also enjoyed Morgenspaziergang on this release.

Gahn Gahn auf de Autobahn. Kraftwerk is genieten. Wil veel leren over Krautwerk.

These are the sounds one of the most important bands of the seventies has very patiently crafted for this masterpiece: "Vroom, vroom" ... "Honk honk" ... "Tick, tock, tick, tock..." ... "Beep beep" ... "Shhhhhhhhh" ... "Vroom, vroom, vrooooooom" ... "Beep, beep, bee-eeeeeeeeeep..." ... "phhhwwtphhhwwt" ... "Click, click, click" ... "Honk, hooooooonk!" And you know what? The proto-electronic music supporting those sounds is so evocative, dreamy and poetic that you really feel like you're riding a car on a highway with Florian, Ralf and their dear, dear friends, driving towards a German sun setting on the horizon. 5/5. Number of albums left to review: 558 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 216 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 103 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 127

Love this

Brilliant

Ground-breaking, seminal et cetera...

Very fun, especially for someone who doesn't like driving.

I’ve hear the short version of Autobahn before and enjoyed it, but it was nothing compared to driving down the highway today listening to the full 20 minute version! Really incredible how the song is constructed. I loved it so much! As the album progressed my love only grew. They paint amazing sound pictures on this album. The flute is wonderful. It might have even edged out The Man-Machine as my favorite from Kraftwerk.

Great Kraftwerk album: superclassic, superinfluential, noting to add.

Normally this is not my preferred choice when I want to listen to some Kraftwerk, but I was pleasantly surprised when hearing Autobahn again. It was strangely emotive, even.

Grandios. Das ertse Album elektronischer Musik, ein Vorreiter und Wegvorbereiter. Hört sich auch heute noch sehr gut.

Title song is brilliant. The others good.

A classic.

funf all day long

Affirmative

As I've established thus far, I'm a suckered for gimmicky experimental sounds. I love the feel overall of this, and it feels like perfect late night music.

The electronic dream starts here. There have been fits and starts, promising beginnings and premature ends but this is where it starts to solidify itself. Before the suits, the haircuts, the dummies, cycling obsessions, etc., Kraftwerk focused on the joys of the road and the beauty of the automobile as they wax sonic miracle that continues to enliven and enlighten nearly fifty years on. Fahren! Fahren! Fahren!

Loved it... Fun fun fun auf der autobahn

Titillagið er æðislegt, þótt kaflarnir séu misspennandi. Kometenmelodie 2 er mjög skemmtilegt og lifandi hljóðfærin í Morgenspaziergang eru flott tilbreyting frá hinu hefðbundna Kraftwek soundi. Held ég hendi í fullt hús.

Easy five. Kraftwerk's best album.

rating this 5 for the 5 year old who probably loves this

gesamtwerk. and some bonus flutes

I loved this.

German Rush

take LSD up your ass and start singing along, along the autobahn. your heart rate will sync with the light flickering in your sad sad office. as you stare into the window, the world turns darker and brighter. congratulations, you are now a lizard again. life as you know it is over, no more worries. enjoy the sun. find the best looking rock you can find. enjoy the sun.

I just really really really liked the sound of all of this I love the flute sounds on Morgenspaziergang So much of this album sounds warm and familiar

Loved this album. Weird rhythms and strange sounds!

YEAH KRAFTWERK!!! Already love this.

Classic stuff

This album just takes you somewhere else. It’s so innovative and ahead of it’s time. Who said you can portray emotion with computers?

I got to see kraftwerk a couple of years ago and like this album they are great

Een epische tocht op de Duitsr snelweg. Lekker dromerig en otherworldly.

Sensacional!

whoaaaa, proto-CAN!

Pretty Good Track 4 best

v drained 2day. not much to say. first side is amazing, hypnotic, etc, and even though the second half is generally weaker its still worth a 10 just for that first track alone. imagine listening to this when it came out in 1974 lmao

Can't pretend it's my music exactly, but very good, very groundbreaking, cool atmosphere.

I love my autobahn

A bit of chillaxing German electronica to get me through the afternoon. Sehr gut

The baboon has now become dinner. First electronic album ever??? Its really cool to hear where it all originated from and I can see how this album helped shape the modern day. Lena Raine, C418, and some fishman connections were made. the first track was the standout as natural but the shorter songs felt like padding more than anything. i LOVE my eb tuning drone. The connections to the german highway were very apparent and were made very clear. I found it cool how they mimiced train bells with keyboards depitched and cars with well, cars. The last song hit though because me and this dumbass were talking bout some chinese baboon getting eaten by a leopard. that last song was STRAIGHT national geographic music . the baboon has now become dinner

Excited to finally hear this. Fantastic!

Clearly influential, and somehow not heard by these ears before. I have a few Kraftwerk albums so perhaps need to add this to the shelves. Surprisingly good to run to. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ ★★★★☆(7/10) Total reviewed : 362 Already owned : 79 Purchased : 16 To buy : 6 Nope : 261

FAVO: Autobahn, Kometenmelodie 2,

I choose to believe this perfectly captures the feeling of driving on the Autobahn, no one tell me otherwise.

The title track is amazing, the concept is fun, and the other tracks take a little getting used to, but really well done.

#386/1001. - Hän oli kaunis kuin öinen moottoritie. - Ja suurinpiirtein yhtä nopea liikkeissään. Two quotes from a Kaurismäki movie which I heard just as I was starting to write this review. What does it have to do with this album? Everything and nothing. The meticulously planned minimalism. The characters behaving like one-two note melody patterns from Autobahn. The road trip from nowhere to nowhere. The quotes, punchlines which are between funny and immortal. The winter, ambient season. These metaphors, which suck big time.

Late to the party with these. Pioneers. All over their stuff now. This is decent. 4/5

Enjoyed it a lot, more than I thought I would. Liked the length and repetition of the songs.

This was groovy the 20 minute opener was like somehow the worst song on here. Second one slaps tho

closer to a 5 than a 3. hell yeah! this is crazy, youngsters. vibe central.

i’m a fan fan fan of the autobahn

I loved this band in 2nd grade so I can't hate this. 4/5

Good listen - I could only find and EP. Ejoyed it though.

Classic. And it still sounds fresh and smart.

Weird, but kind of good. Interesting sounds

um where am i what is this. this is an experience..! the sounds are fun & innovative. playful, experimental, carefree. i feel like im ... on a journey!? is that, a flute? are we in a mystical land?! favorite song: probably the title track. makes me want to drive on an autobahn hahaa orrr kometenmelodie 1 / mitternacht bc they're so boss intro / dungeon level coded. xd

Great werk

Really good stuff. They're fahr'n fahr'n fahr'n on the autobahn. The first and last song carried, I could do without the middle songs.

Sehr gut.

I often listen to these albums at work, which has maybe meant I shortchanged a few of them, but I think it worked in Autobahn's favour - it's good for going into a semi-trance.

fahn fahn fahn on the autobahn

Great background music.

Very good Atmospheric Classic

Not really a Kraftwerk fan, I kind of dread whenever I get these records. But.. I kind of liked this one. It was very atmospheric. Easy and nice to have on in the background while I was grinding through work today. Weird and flowy, fun and chill. I liked this.

Is the opening track a little long? Sure. I actually listened to this on a run today and by the time track one was done I had run 5k. Long doesn’t mean bad, this is electronic music and Kraftwerk are creating an atmosphere and it’s super chill. There are enough variations, slight as they are to keep this interesting. I’m not sure I’d use this as a running album again but it’s a great album to zone out to or work to. Really good stuff. 4 stars

Definitely a good choice for this 1001 list as it must be one of the most significant album releases of all time in terms of what it influenced and led to in terms of stylistic development. What it lacks in terms of raw musical content it makes up for in sheer electronic timbral variety - how DID they develop those sounds. One cannot remove the image of the Tomorrow's world segment and the advent of 'future music'. The Spectre of prog is not far from the 22 minute title track which does have its impressive moments. Can see why Bowie was transfixed by this stuff at the time - I always felt that Jean-Michel Jarre took it further but hearing it for the first time must have been remarkable or completely baffling.

Im a fan, fan, fan of the Autobahn

Long instrumental/ artsy electronica bleepy soundscapes— def makes me think of Eno. Not nearly as kitsch as the other Kraftwerk assignment I got this week!

If this album was produced today instead of 50 years ago, it would have been called just another electronic EDM album. But considering it was created in 1974, the technology was quite groundbreaking. Truly pioneering the electronic and industrial music revolution.
