Album Summary
Highly Evolved is the debut studio album by Australian alternative rock band The Vines. It was released on 14 July 2002 on Capitol Records. Produced by Rob Schnapf, known for his collaboration with Tom Rothrock on Elliott Smith's albums Either/Or, XO, and Figure 8, Highly Evolved was an immensely popular debut, part of a trend towards garage rock revival bands known as much for the relentless hype from the UK music press as for their music; The Vines were frequently compared to Nirvana. The debut single, "Highly Evolved", was chosen as Single of the Week by influential British music magazine NME. The magazine also voted it the 2nd best album of the year in 2002. The album was also included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

כיף, אהבתי סה״כ. רוק של תחילת שנות האלפיים. פשוט לא היה שם משהו מפתיע מאוד או מיוחד
That was some insignificant post-grunge/post-punk/alt rock BS right there. Like they didn't know if they wanted to be Oasis or Nirvana or Screaming Trees. Not an impressive addition even though the Weird Al polka song Get Free is on here which was a nice surprise. 2.3/5 -> 2/5
I was expecting high octane guitar a la Get Free single. I got a whole variety of songs based on different genres. Highly evolved Im sure, but master of none.

*2002. *Get Free is the only song I know. *First half of the album was fun and catchy, and we were heading toward 4 stars. But then there were too many slower songs and it kind of droned on. *I like this genre (post punk, right?) and it was like a more modern version. Apparently this is called garage rock revival, which seems right. RATING - 6/10
i actually didn’t mind this 3.5 cos i couldn’t decide to rate up or down
I liked this a lot more than I thought I had the energy for when this began. Then, they made me realize I had to get free and ride into the sun. If this doesn’t do it for you, I don’t know what will.
Mary Jane and 1969 were cool. Rest was fairly standard stuff.
It's 'ight. Enjoyed this a lot more in my teenage years
Helt ok men inget som fastnar.
Derivative and trite.
Reasonably good indie rock. Has a distinct 90s feel to although it’s a decade too late for that . Not sure why it’s on the list . Good but unremarkable
3/10… garage rock / indie / *2002
I liked this!
It’s pretty cool and for sure right up my alley. It is also by no means exceptional. One of the most 3 star albums I’ve been given so far.
Well, this was definitely a flashback to early 2000s mainstream alternative rock. If I had to break it down, they take the 60s garage rock sound, mix it with modern neo-psychedelia, and throw in the raw edge of 90s grunge. It definitely has some fun pop hooks, and if you were listening to music during the early 2000s, you’ll probably recognize a few tracks from the past. It’s nothing too extraordinary, and I personally wouldn’t add it to any top albums list, but if you take it at face value, it’s fun for what it is.
This is the album how i found this 1001 list, found few albums including this from my apartments waste collection room shelf for maybe useful stuff for others, cover looked cool so i took cd in my car and i was stunned, have listened this about 100times now in few years. Wikipedia article said this was included in this collection and now about 800albums later i havent yet found nothing new to me as good as this what was the purpose to start listening this listing. Its sad that this album is not included newest version of this book. About the music in this album there is very good amount of different kind of songs, I myself play drums and of course focusing much that sections and before i found out there was multiple drummers it was weird and very refreshing to listen. The overall playing is smooth and little angry sections are fun and cute, very lame band if somebody thinks this is heavy music but im old and like it smooth and comforting.
Looking through the reviews on this and its an endless sea of 1 and 2 star reviews. There are about 10 albums like this from this time period and none of those seem to be nearly as hated as this one. It feels kind of random to be honest. Anyways, I found the songs to be really fun and interesting and its not too long for once. Will I listen to this again? Absolutely. My favorite song was Homesick; reminded me of what I would hear in my dad’s car before he started listening to overproduced modern country slop. If Tom Petty had a grunge band, it would sound like the Vines.
This was irrelevant in 2002, yet alone over 2 decades later.
Calling this middle of the road would be offensive to roads
One of the cases where I liked a couple of the singles and the album overall but probably not enough to visit it specifically. I won’t skip them when they come up on a generated playlist.
Loved Get Free, liked a few others. Not a landmark listen for me but I enjoyed it.
A lot of low votes for this one and it's puzzling as this is an album I picked up when I was a college DJ and listened to it a lot over the years. Was I surprised it was on this list? Sure. Is it head and shoulders above many others I've listened to on this list? Also yes. The album is strong from beginning to end, but maybe the lack of finding anyone else who talked about it made me think I was one of the only fans or it was super obscure. Each song is so clearly defined and engineered so cleanly, the melodies and lyrics are fun and at times the songs go to really inventive places (thinking of Ain't No Room). Maybe cut the Mary Jane song and it's perfect. Probably a 4.5 for me, but can't really get to 5.
This list has taught me that The Vines are not the same band as The Hives and that I don't really care for either.
more like 1001 totally fine albums that would've been reasonably and deservedly forgotten to time had this book never been published
This sounds like the hoodwinked soundtrack minus the parts everyone remembers. I’m not even joking.
Really good chilled out rock/alternative music. Seems like something I would have liked when I was younger. It's very chilled out and would be great to put on for a relaxing get together. It's not too slow but easy to listen to without being obnoxious.
3.5
Why, oh why is this on this list? I've listened to it, nodded off once or twice and have almost instantly forgotten it. I wasn't interested 24 years ago and my level of interest has gone through the floor now. I don't understand why anyone into this kind of music would like this album short of there being nothing better around at the time... which maybe was true, I was firmly in my metal/hardcore phase at the time so blissfully unaware. Also, reminds me of when I was travelling and mistakenly got into Incubus... 1.5
Like a lot of bands of this era, I had The Vines down as indie landfill. This album tells me that they're a bit better than that tag but not enough for me to be interested in listening to this again. It was decent but nothing special, not an album that needs to be on this list.
Antipodean Oasis/Nivana/Blur wannabes but achieving nothing and about 6 years too late. 2 7/10/26
Yeah this just felt like a perfect middle of the road, not good, not bad, okay kind of rock album. Nothing really special. Just a middle of the road rating as well then, benefit of the doubt over a slightly lower one. 3/5
Very enjoyable
Some of this was fine, but mostly forgettable.
Actually enjoyed this album more than I thought I would. I assumed Get Free would be the only song, and the rest would be filler - quite the opposite! Some good songs on here.
Pretty good! Way better than that Cage Teh Elephant band… *shudders*
This was pretty fun. I haven't heard Get Free in years but that's a classic.
Better than expected, some catchy tunes. I will probably return to this.
4/5
Annoying vocals, forgetable hooks, severe lack of originality , its all here. The pacing is also really fucking bad. It constantly switches from heavy alt rock songs to boring quiet acoustic ballads, no in between. Seriously the only thing I liked on this whole album was the heavy, fuzzy guitar tone that appears once in a while. Thats kinda cool. But in the end its just some corporate garage rock revival, white stripes wannabe, shit. Higly NOT evolved/5
Nice listen
Has almost nothing worth remarking upon. It will be utterly forgotten by annals of history.
They have a very specific sound that I don't think is my favorite? Some songs are really good, and some are just noise and screaming. It almost gives me Beach Boys or something? Screamo Beach Boys, mixed with Sunny Day Real Estate?? Country Yard and Mary Jane were great songs.
This is not awful, but it sounds like it was scientifically designed so that each song reminds you of 1-3 popular alt-rock bands from the 90's/early 2000's. It is a little off-putting to hear such blatant replications of those sounds, but it's competent. The production is maybe too clean.
I am digging this album and I missed out on a lot of new music in the early 2000’s. I like the mix of Rockin’ tunes and ballads. Got some punk, grunge, rock and gen appropriate psychedelic. 😵💫 I am leaning towards a 5…I have to give another listen today.
Diet Nirvana. Some surprisingly decent tunes on here alongside some actual cod reggae.
Highly over-exposed. Got a bit too much hype from the music press and seemed to fizzle out pretty quickly. Nearly had the fright of my life when I almost accidentally saved all 12 songs to a playlist. The cover art reminded me a bit of that Tame Impala record, and lo and behold, he/they are a fan. I don't get Tame Impala at all so that endorsement doesn't help. Most of the songs on here were short at least and i did actually like the one that sounded like a Helter Skelter pastiche though it did go on for ages, so I'll bump it up to a 3.
It's okay. I like the idea but none of the songs ever grabbed me. 3 out of 5
RATING: 4/10 HIGHLIGHT: Factory LOWLIGHT: Get Free
Disco agradável, mas inofensivo. Falta personalidade e momentos que possam empolgar.
Taka biedna nirvana. 2 lub 3
I mean, it is perceptible that this album has been inspired by Nirvana – and also some Beatle-esque hints are from here to there around it too –, but it is better than Nirvana. As much as it may sound offensive, and still in the blandness of this record, it is at some point pleasant and listenable. It is even good at many moments. The songs feel well constructed, with some rhythmic changes, some great instrumentals, some energy too. It is a pretty decent album. Not great, not very memorable (or not memorable at all), but still it has some really good tracks that make of listening to it a nice experience.
There used to be a UK TV show Stars in their eyes where people would perform as famous singers. They would announce this with the famous words “tonight Matthew I’m going to be…” and apparently the vibes intend to be the Beatles and nirvana at the same time. Generally songs like one or another but in songs like factory which is the unholy offspring of in bloom and o bla di o bla da they sound like both at once. Its enjoyable, its fun, its not that important
Fine, run-of-the-mill, period alt rock. One big hit in there I had no idea was theirs, so that was an Easter egg.
Somehow in the early noughties this band passed me by. I was out of my grunge rock phase but not quite rediscovered my love for guitar bands. A good listen and a couple of really strong tracks that feel good from the first listen. Will be seeking out more.
Eh not my favorite
Grew on me, like vines
Loved some of the riffs but found too much of the work a bit oasis like in terms of the vocals.
Well, I can tell exactly which bands these guys listened to growing up. Sadly, that doesn't amount to having made something interesting or innovative, or even vaguely memorable. After a while, they stop yelling at you and try some melodies, but there's no substance to much of it. Rescued from one point by the back half being slightly more bearable. I hope they went on to do better things than this, but I have my doubts if this is deemed worthy of being on the list.
Absolute banger, 3 piece who love to rock with a garage punk edge but also churn out beautiful psych rock harmonies.
a littel late but lets go im getting heavy nirvana influence off the bat. great capture of the sound decent softer song, idk if the vocals work the best on here tho i love the grittiness in the vocals combined with the lightness of the guitar its cool, nothing too crazy but it sounds good nice little piano rock track, a little basic but i like it rockin garage punk song, goes hard asf i like the harmonization very lennon-esque, also kinda basic if oasis were like 10x harder they would sound like this i mean it sounds good but its a bit boring for being the second longest song on the album needed tempo change from the last song great outro, but i do feel it couldve ended halfway through the song overall pretty good garage punk record, nothing too revolutionary tho. a little derivative of nirvana and other artists in that scene, but so were many bands in this era. i liked it, 6.5
As if someone asked AI to come up with a group 60% Nirvana, 30% Oasis & 10% Rush. Not unpleasant
It was okay.
Get free is a ferociously energetic and catchy song that obviously carries this album into the mainstream. I appreciate that the album is as sonically varied as it was, but unfortunately the songs did not grab me anywhere near as much as get free did. The production is good and of the era, but the single was special, the album was okay.
A little more variety than the reviews led me to believe
It was good in 2002. It is not as good today. Sounds like a trial to reanimate Nirvana’s sound. After 2 decades, it is clear the Hives were better
Good but not Nirvana
Standard Brit Pop with a tiny bit of garage sound, but actually way too produced for that. Sounds pleasant enough, but completely unoriginal and absolutely not essential.
At first this was kinda like growing up in a broken home: I like y’all, but why all the yelling? The yelling tapered off as the album progressed so that was a relief. I liked the sound. But ultimately this album seems to be on the list to show that 10 years after Nirvana grunge made it to Australia…. Noted 👍🏻
I suppose I can see the comparisons to Nirvana and grunge in this album. However, it is devoid of all the things that made Nirvana great and grunge impactful as a genre. The hooks are grooves are polished, commercial, and way too self aware. It makes for good, catchy, music. However, it lacks any staying power or significance.
2.5
Forgot about Get Free. Great song. The slow songs were great too. I really enjoyed this one. Just pleasantly surprised because I feel like this band got looped in with The Strokes and other bands of lesser value of that era. Maybe that was just my fault. 4/5
A very nice surprise! Good, solid, 90’s alternative. Will definitely listen again!
Well, I like the album cover art. That's lovely. The songs aren't awful, they're just immensely forgettable. There's a little Nirvana, STP, Beatles, and maybe a touch of Guns N' Roses going on here, but it all mixes together into 44 minutes of meh. 3 stars, right down the middle.
This was nice to have on in the background while I did my cardio. Everything sounded solid, but nothing in particular stood out.
Mary Jane
too indie
Is it knockoff oasis with heavy nirvana influence? Yes, so the lack of originality didn't pass me. However, art is inspiration and music is art so it wasn't all that bad.
TL;DR: I really wanted to like this album, but just kinda... Didn't. Grunge, Indie Rock, Punk, post-Punk and the intersection of those genres are still my "nostalgic" goto. There are so many great bands over several decades that fit somewhere into this "hard rock" church. So, I had vaguely heard the name The Vines, without actually knowing them in any detail. The chance of discovering a "hidden gem" (to me, anyway) is fantastic. I started listening to the album with great hope. By about halfway, I was thinking, "meh". They're fine, and some good hard riffs, but not amazing. And quite generically shouty at times. So, above average, sure. But, sadly, not adding to my rotation.
A pretty easy listen, good background music and somehow brings me back to the days of playing Tony Hawk Underground/Pro Skater. Some of tops from the album are In the Jungle, Highly Evolved and 1969
Can I have 10 tracks of grunge alt rock please? Certainly sir, we've got a special offer on today and you get a couple free. To me it felt like an opportunity to get in on the zeitgeist rather than contribute to it, all the elements of grunge were obviously there, but it somehow felt clinically done. The tracks had some great bits but then had to include each of the grunge elements (including the whole "I'm drowning in reverb" effect) Saying that outtathaway was a fun track and I started to get more into it, but the horrible piano sound on homesick, did for me. Overall it wasn't hard to listen to it, I just found it pretty soulless. 2/5
No private session used for Spotify. One of the bands of the early 21st century letting us know that guitar driven rock was back. I knew a couple of the songs, but never listened to this album. It was a mix of rock songs and some a bit mellow. They should stick to the rocking.
Too many bands in 2002 had no idea what they wanted to be. Unlike their Aussie counterparts Silverchair, this was a band that couldn't lean into heavier elements and instead pushed toward some weird mix of Britpop, grunge and psychedelia and wound up with lukewarm porridge music. There's just kinda nothing here, no energy, no real sound to speak of. The only thing they've got going for them is a lead singer that can howl and growl along with singing, and that isn't ever used to its full potential. It's just a real mess and doesn't wind up anywhere, dragging out far longer than its 45 minute run time.
I didn’t like most of this album, but there’s some very cool and psychedelic parts that I really enjoyed. Mary Jane and Homesick both stood out to me. The rest I found mostly hard to listen to.
Overall: 6/10 First of all, Outtathaway should have opened the album. That song is great. I had a short phase in high school where I listened to The Vines a lot. That was about 12 years ago now (ew) and I haven't really listened to them since, so this was an interesting experiment to see if I still enjoyed something that I loved in my childhood. For the most part, I still enjoy it. However, now that I've listened to a wider range of music over the years, I can see how derivative and unoriginal their sound is. That doesn't mean the songwriting isn't good, but it feels pretty safe to me in a way that prevents me from loving it the way I used to. Give it a chance and you may get something out of it. Fav Song: Get Free
It sounds like a lot of other bands from this era, but with better tunes.
Buncha Nirvana-Be's. Except when they dig into the whole Elliott Smith thing. This is what the critics are referring to when they talk about "Landfill Indie." This spot should have gone to FIDLAR, whose non-album cover of The Vines' "Get Free" blows the original away.
I'm really enjoying "Factory" and "Homesick" this morning. It's funny to me that the Wikipedia article says The Vines were initially compared to Nirvana; I don't hear that.
Sounds like songs that would be featured on Madden.
Not sure why people are so into AI like it's the best thing in the world when everything it produces looks as shit as this album cover. The Vines were The Temu Hives, who were the Temu White Stripes, who were the Temu Strokes, who were just Temu trying to create a rock band. And we have to listen to all of those bands. Is Jet in here too? I bet we have to fucking hear Jet too, don't we? I know we have the Arctic Monkeys. Fucking hell. The album immediately gives us terrible vocals. No riffs to soften the blow. Yawn Vinesman, lead singer of the Vines, constantly sounds like he is either bored so far past death that he never existed, or he is screaming like an idiot. These are barely written songs, and honestly by Outtathaway, I have been surprised the prior song ended twice. They just seem to get bored of the song and it stops. Which checks out. Even at its loudest nothing here has passion. It's like a senior submitting a final project. Technically it is an album, but it feels like it was done out of obligation, devoid of interest, and with the clear lack of concern that it's getting a D. That's ⭐️ in generator lingo
Disjointed with a banger here and there.
I liked it
This albums sounds exactly like 2002 to me. Get free could be in a Tony Hawk game and I wouldn't bat an eye. I like their sound, and it isn't just a pure rock album, there's a little bit of grunge and ska baked in that help break up the album. I think the main singer's (Craig Nicholls) voice gives their sing a raw, almost Cobain-like sound that works really well. Overall a pleasant listen, but nothing to write home about. Favorite track: Homesick, Get Free.
I am entirely unmoved. This is alt-rock Elastica.
This album had a few decent moments but it was more boring than anything. Several songs were extremely skippable and by the middle of the last song I could wait for it to be over. I also do not have any songs from this LP that I truly enjoyed. Rating: 4/10
This was fine, but one of the 1001 greatest? Nah
Bought this album when it came out, haven't revisited it much in intervening years. Why is it in this list, maybe one of them is related to the list compiler?
