Album Summary

Beauty and the Beat is the debut album from Californian new wave band the Go-Go's. Released in 1981 on the I.R.S. Records label, the album reached number one on Billboard's Top LPs & Tape chart in March 1982, bolstered by its two big Hot 100 hit singles: "Our Lips Are Sealed" (no. 20) and "We Got the Beat" (no. 2), initially released in 1980, but in a different version. After a long and steady climb, Beauty and the Beat reached number one in the album chart dated March 6, 1982, the week before "We Got the Beat" entered the Top Ten of the Hot 100. The album stayed at the top for six consecutive weeks, and ranked second in Billboard's year-end Top 100 of 1982 (behind the self-titled debut album of Asia). The LP sold in excess of two million copies, and was RIAA-certified double platinum, qualifying it as one of the most successful debut albums of all time. Critically acclaimed, it has been described as one of the "cornerstone albums of American new wave".The title is a play on the European fairy tale "Beauty and the Beast".

Great pop album from back in the day, go go’s on tour with The Specials, our lips are sealed etc, Belinda Carlisle when she was cooool

Good fun. My lips are sealed, we are the beat and this town are bangers

Fuck yes. Grabbed this on vinyl from a bargain bin many years back, among the best one dollar purchases of my life. This is a fantastic album, not a dud on the thing. Also featuring one of the most gorgeous bass tones ever; hot damn, that bass sounds amazing.

One of those albums in the category of music that blends every sound from the 70's and early 80's together. That kind of half Punk, half New Wave, half Alternative kind of Pop sound. Good mesh and the Go-Go's do it well. Can't really find much fault with it, it's just a solid little bop of an album with some nice stand out songs. If not much more than that.

Cheerful and bouncy

Lots of fun energy on this one which crisp guitars and punchy beats, but unfortunately her voice just gets too sugary sweet for my liking so I can only handle it in small doses. 3/5

3.5/5 contente d’avoir découvert un grp 100% meufs mais besoin d’explorer plus leur discographie

An upbeat record, fun, and enjoyable, but not my thing.

I like her voice and some of the arrangements but it’s not for me

Thought I didn’t know this at all. Turns out I knew plenty. Surprising fun

A competently put together album, just really not my thing.

Awesome album I’ve accidentally put off listening to for years. A lot of great high-energy tracks that sound more like 1986 than 1981. Jams front to back.

Upbeat surf rock Tracks : tonite , we got the beat

Album 360. Beauty And The Beat (https://open.spotify.com/album/1L4HE00En7eNK74voVZums?si=98eRk5MnRPGJ3Qc0pvEl7A) — The Go-Go's (1981) absolutely a no-name for me, but a good new wave album 3/5 Liked: — Lust To Love

This is the pure definition of girls having fun and I am all in for it Fav songs - This Town, Skidmarks On My Heart, Can't Stop The World 4/5

This was generally enjoyable if maybe a little more bouncy than I usually go for! "Our Lips Are Sealed" "This Town" and "We Got The Beat" were the standouts here

I remember liking this much more in 1981, lol. This time around it’s kind of generic and boring .

4/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/go-gos/beauty-and-the-beat/ Very very fun! One of the most fun albums I've heard on the list. Not per se one of the best (a bit too straightforward for that), but every song is just exciting. I'll definitely turn back to this more often!

Красиві дівчата) Сподіваюсь вони вміють грати?

Refreshing pop rock. Carried a bit by their 2 hits, but it’s an easy listening experience. Favourites: We Got The Beat and Our Lips Are sealed

Really enjoyed this. would recommend

Perfectly fine secretary desk radio tunes. Not unpleasant or offensive in any way which unfortunately means it wasn't very memorable. Stand outs were How Much More and This Town

It's a fun listen. Not many of the tracks stand out on their own (This Town is my favourite) , but overall it's a fun, catchy, easy listen

Good pop album, I enjoyed. Would listen again.

Our Lips Are Sealed is a lot slower than I remember. A good listen though. Great 80s vibe without being too synthetic. More like The Cars than Cyndi Lauper (not knocking either, they both have their place).

A bright, breezy record with an easy, feel-good energy

What is it with 80s new wave bands and misunderstanding apostrophes? Is making great music more important than grammar? Maybe it is.

This is fine, not super remarkable, but a fun and short listen.

Rock n roll Al femminile, tipo anni 80

Not really my thing but fun nonetheless.

An album I slept on forever. This was a really fun listen. Well composed and arranged, the talent from this seminal 80's band is evident from start to finish.

This was a fun and catchy album.

Just some 80's fun stuff

Really everything I want from a new wave album is on here. Just very catchy, fun, quick and danceable. I don’t think I would’ve found this album if it weren’t for this list/generator.

Heavily sanitised, manufactured, boring shite. New wave isn't my favourite, but this was just boring, offering nothing. Clearly manufactured for an American market, with nothing of excitement offered really.

Of course the album is great on its own - but the crowning achievement of it might be the clear influence The Go-Go‘s had on many other bands. It‘s frankly insane how much acts like Bananarama and Zhe Bangles sound like The Go-Go‘s. A great blend of rock and pop elements, highly dance-able and high energy all throughout. We Got The Beat towers over the rest of the album, but the rest of the tracks shouldn‘t have to hide. There isn‘t a single bad song on the album, they are all varying degrees of good to great to amazing.

Dug this album a lot. From the hits, I dismissed the Go Go's as pop... but today I heard punk, new wave... some really fun instrumentation and lyrics. I expected bubblegum, but I got Skidmarks on my Heart.

Ranetki american ver. 35 минут подросткового бунта в розовых носках

What a fun album! Had never listened to anything by the Go-Go’s outside of We Got The Beat. This was a pleasant surprise. Catchy and fun hooks with music that keeps you moving but isn’t dumbed down.

go go girly pop (new wave?) c

Elles ont le beat. Mélodies sympas, voix sympa et c’est des meufs, W !

I mean, c'mon. This whole album just sounds like being in Santa Monica in the early 80s. Some real bangers here. These badass women knew how to hold it down.

Really pop, with a couple of indisputably fun tracks, but overall I would say I found it slightly boring. I will see if I come back to it?

never heard of this band but this album is pretty good! it feels particularly energetic for new wave and has a little of a pop punk smell to it as well i guess? so maybe its obvious i would like it. idk. i think this is another of those albums where im not so much picking out individual tracks as just enjoying the overall sound, but i do like "tonite", "lust to love" and "skidmarks on my heart" in particular a lot. i really enjoyed the vocals throughout but on "list to love" specifically they remind me of rhps for some reason. idk why but i wish i did cos its bothering me. hmmm. it took a few listens for me to get into it but i think this is a pretty solid 4. i'm sure ill come back to this one regularly....

Some New Wave! I liked that it had some different textures to it. It didn't feel like the same idea over and over. There is some prog rock-ish stuff, some folk-ish stuff. The back half is really nice. I enjoyed "Automatic" in particular. Its nice and short. A 3!

Pretty cool, I think I'll listen to it again soon

Much more B-52s than I had been expecting, though in re-listening to We Got The Beat (maybe for the first full time? I'm not sure) I totally should have been expecting that

Не знаю, мне просто не понравилось. Довольно посредственно, может, конечно, я просто не дала ему шанса, но может, я закончу его позже

Surprisingly loved the beat

day 11 of not rolling Aja by Steely Dan fun. Sometimes that’s all music needs to be

I’d heard “We Got the Beat” but never took time to listen to the Go-Gos outside of that and I enjoyed this one a lot! This album reminded me what the list is for: introducing me to cool fun music that I wouldn’t have listened to otherwise!

Good getting ready for girls night album, bur other than that it’s quite generic

Love this album!

It was fun. Likely will not revisit though.

I wasn’t expecting a lot from this, but it’s actually very enjoyable. You can tell that they are still learning their craft, but the energy and fun is undeniable, and Gina Schock is a really tight drummer. As early New Wave / power pop, it’s thoroughly worth a listen - not great, but good

It's 3.5

Fun band. The fact that a band comprised of women were at the spearhead of American New Wave is noteworthy on its own, but never mind that. They can legit play. While Belinda Carlisle's vocals would make a listener think this is just standard pop, the lyrics primarily by Jane Wiedlin and Charlotte Caffey show legit punk influence. This album straddles the line of DIY punk and hooky pop as well as anyone.

I think it's fair to say that I know far more about the Go Go's unruly behaviour than I do their music since I'm not American and it didnt get much UK radio.play at the time. I'm quite looking forward to listening.. Starting off with a Terry Hall tune (love him to bits), I think i prefer the Fun Boy 3 version, but its still a good track and a fine opener. Track 2 sounds like the mighty HMHB. I like this. So does track 3.... Track 4 ditto Track 5, yup more of the same. I.listened to this whilst at work and let it wash over me, I've never been good at focusing on lyrics (its all about the music for me) so not really sure what the songs are about. Musically it all sounds a bit samey, although familiar f(or the reason provided above,) it's nice enough, but wouldnt have said it was smsomething that I NEEDED to hear before I died, even though I now have I could have played drums in this band if i wasnt 7 at the time of recording and had tits. Update, it was a Terry Hall co-write....credit to the other writer, (whoever they were i couldn't be bothered to remeber)

I’m on a roll, another album I enjoyed. The only song I knew was the opener (albeit the Fun Boy Three version), and whilst the Go Go’s version was decent I actually preferred the more punky 80s pop material present throughout the album, particularly How Much More and This Town. The only gripe really was it was a bit samey after a while but when the songs are enjoyable you don’t mind too much that it’s the same. Was it a classic? Not really. Did it put a smile on my face? Yes. I’m going to plump for a decent 3.5/5

Post surfer Punk Pop or something. What amazed me was how timeless the album sounded compared to its new wave and post punk peers. Catchy, fun, infectious and rocking. I really enjoyed it. A solid 4 stars, a bit more variety might have been nice but a cracking album.

Peak early 80s pop, with jangly guitars, harmonies and sweet songwriting. God, this is a sweet relief from all the 70s folk-rock I've had lately. More please!!!

I remember my parents had this album when I was growing up and I was so confused why all these ladies had yogurt on their faces. Solid pop rock album with an almost surf rock feel and a lot of obvious influence on later female-driven ska punk like No Doubt and Save Ferris.

Umm… perfectly acceptable

Good catchy songs. Nothing mind blowing, but really enjoyed it.

Really fun 80's pop rock. The high energy on this album is infectious.

Beauty and the Beat is one of those albums where I can understand the appeal without necessarily enjoying it very much myself. The Go-Go’s have a fun, energetic sound, and there’s no denying that the album has plenty of catchy hooks and a strong sense of personality. “We Got the Beat” and “Our Lips Are Sealed” are especially memorable, and it’s easy to see why the band became such an important part of the early-’80s pop and new wave scene. That said, the album was pretty mediocre for me overall. I never really found myself getting into the bright, polished production or the particular combination of punk, pop, and new wave that defines the record. Some of the songs are enjoyable enough, but as a whole it didn’t leave much of an impression on me. I think part of the problem may simply be that I’m discovering that I don’t particularly enjoy a lot of ’80s music. The production style, vocal sounds, and overall aesthetic of the decade often feel a little too dated for my taste, and Beauty and the Beat definitely falls into that category. Still, I can appreciate what the album represents. The Go-Go’s were a hugely successful all-female band who helped bring a punk-influenced sound into the mainstream, and Beauty and the Beat is an important snapshot of that moment. I just don’t think it’s an album I’ll be coming back to very often.

Honestly not a bad record at all. The Go-Go’s have really mastered their style of synthy, energetic pop rock songs, and overall the whole album just tends to go by without much fluff. A nice fun, new-wave album that is both nice and upbeat and joyous.

Divertido pero tampoco me ha apasionado.

3 1/2 Stars: For a group of women who just learned instruments and formed a band, this is a pretty solid debut. The writing is good about the typical labors of love. The hits are the standouts here. The rest of tracks have a certain medium tempo filler vibe and aren't necessarily memorable.

Trivsam pop

It's like a combination of New Wave and Surf Rock. It was really good and had some of their best works on it. I enjoyed that album, however, it wasn't my absolute favorite.

Fun album. More punk than I expected. 4 out of 5

really good pop album. the sort of thing that just speaks to me

Good album

Fun and punchy but doesn't really hold attention.

My first concert was the Go-Go's opening for The Police and I fell in love with this album

Their punctuation is dreadful but the songs are fun – bouncy and upbeat with a punkish frisson – and I always like to hear some women rock out (especially on this damn list). For such a short album, it feels a bit drawn out, maybe because the songs are quite similar.

Sounds like Spice Girls for adults on first impression! Jolly enough and a couple of known hits but nothing mind-blowing. Prefer Belinda Carlisle as a solo artist.

No time for long review -enjoyed... good fun!

freaking love the go gos

Too 80s.

Definitely remember this from high school. I hated it then, but it is actually better than run of the mill pop. I enjoyed listening to it (it does need to be played loud!). Not sure I would ever put it on…. Favorite song (which I never heard before this): Fading Fast. And of course Our Lips Are Sealed (not such a fan of We Got The Beat).

Actually enjoying this more than I expected.

It went by really quick, and it didn't annoy me once. Solid spin, but nothing that stood out to me as amazing.

Iconic and set the scene for a decade.

A decent album with a couple of hit singles, but not something I have much interest in. Of the two, I prefer The Bangles. 4 stars or B-.

The Go-Go's hadde muligens hatt nivået inne for en topp 5 plassering i MGP junior, men lite annet. Lust to Love og Can't Stop The World er brukbare. Favorittøyeblikket mitt var allikevel 3 minutter og 19 sekunder inn i sistnevnte.

Høres ut som et generisk band som spiller på ballet i en high school-film

Svak 3. For sukkersøtt

Ikke noe Justin Bieber+Nicki Minaj selvfølgelig, men fortsatt ganske bra. Sterk 3er

Cool beat so far; well I guess it’s called beauty & the beat lol Not a whole lot other than the popular tracks but it was still enjoyable to listen to

Didn't really like the first half of the album, but the second half is pretty decent.

A great album and now held up as an important piece of work. At the time I thought it was ok but derivative. The single was great though. The big song is Our Lips are Sealed. This is still one of the great songs.
