1001 Albums Summary

So much homophobia.

Ooof. This was not for me.

I think this list should change its name to 1001 Elvis Costello Albums You Need to Hear Before You Die.

Meh. It’s like one 42-minute long song.

This was not for me.

Did I need to hear this album before I die? No. No, I did not.

There's nothing I love more than a 10-minute guitar solo, said me never.

I graduated high school in 1985, hot on the heels of the behemoth that was Purple Rain. My classmates HAD to have a Prince song as our Graduating Song, and in their infinite (ahem) wisdom chose Free from this album. I think this is the first time I've heard it in 40 years. But the album is still a banger.

I liked this. It reminded me of music that would be played in a night club in a 50's movie.

Here's what so great about music. This was definitely NOT for me, but I saw a few 4 and 5 star reviews from other folx. Just that fact that I didn't like while others loved it is pretty cool, in my book.

Maybe I'm just unsophisticated, but 20-minute meandering piano songs just aren't for me.

This was my second Led Zeppelin in a week. I'm normally not a classic rock guy, but this was ok.

As a rule, I don't like music from the '60s. And this upheld that rule.

This was my first time listening to The Stone Roses. I dug it.

This isn't my favorite Prince record (despite containing my favorite Prince tune). It feels unwieldy to me. For me, the second disc works better than the first.

I am a fan of neither The Who nor live albums, so this was kind of a double whammy for me.

Going into this, the only song I knew here was IGY. And then I got a whole album of IGY.

If you listen to an hour and 15 minute long album and none of it registers, did it really happen?

Thanks to this list, it turns out I like Led Zeppelin.

Meh. IF I’m in the mood for Beck, I’m going to Midnite Vultures.

2.5 stars. Nothing says rock and roll like an electric organ.

Kate Bush is off-kilter in the best way possible.

Look, Johnny Cash will never be my cup of tea, but I have mad respect for him performing in jails and prisons.

God, I can’t stand The Smashing Pumpkins. They get right on my tits. Blerg.

3.5 stars. I approached this with trepidation. I hadn’t heard them before (or so I thought. I see you “Alright”). But I really liked this. Fun, jaunty, loud, but still melodic. Good times.

This was real nice. (Although, I still think The Bangles Hazy Shade of Winter is superior).

I mean, come on. It's a classic.

We've experienced such a huge loss. And this album illustrates just part of what we'll be missing.

The perfect album for a rainy day at home.

Look, music from the 50s will never be my go-to. But you can't deny his entertainability.

For me, this was Radiohead-lite.

There are some nice things about it, but overall it just didn't ring my bell.

God love Kate Bush. This was excellent. On The Sensual World, Kate Bush ate (as the kids say).

I mean, c'mon. How can you not love The B-52's? '

Ella Fitzgerald. The Gershwins. Nelson Riddle. It doesn't get any better than this. I get the comments about the 3 hour length, but for me, this was sublime.

My first time listening to this album. At first I was way into the campiness of it, but then it got to be too much.

This is one of the reasons I love this project. As frustrating as it can be at times, moments like this come along. I had never listened to Nanci Griffith before but was so taken with her mellow, folksy charm.

The Beatles just ain't for me.

As I'm going along on this journey, a barometer of my ratings seems to be "would I listen to this again?". The answer for this one is "no. No I would not".

This coincides perfectly with my recent foray into The Rolling Stones catalog. Great album.

I can handle Steely Dan in very, very small doses. This dose was too large.

I'm surprised I hadn't listened to The Bends before, although I knew High and Dry from Betty Buckley's cover. I like Radiohead, mostly their later stuff, so maybe that's why. Anyway, this is pretty great stuff.
