Good Mood Album. (6/10) Favourite Track: We Got the Beat

Beauty and the Beat by The Go-Go's is a beautiful album with many songs that would make you dance at any time. However, until track six they seem to be a bit monotonous and if you don't pay attention you might say you're listening to the same song. But its slower tracks are the ones that stand out above the rest and being that it came out 40 years ago, it's a valuable gem in our music.

This album was a whole lot better than I'd thought it'd be, very groovy and 80's. 9/10.

I feel like more of these songs should be classics. They're catchy, well-written and work well at high volume. The production sound is kinda shrill though. Popularity of the songs on Spotify *fades fast* after We Got The Beat, which is a pity because the songs there are also really good! Top 3 for me are Fading Fast, This Town, Skidmarks On My Heart, with close runners-up We Got The Beat and Automatic. The singer sounds like the guy from Japan, but a tad less like she's suffering.

I listened to this album a couple of times and while I did enjoy it, there wasn’t anything in particular that stood out to me except Automatic and Skidmarks on My Heart.

New Wave all the way. Nice riffs, harmonies, bass lines, vocals by Belinda, girl power in the 80s ... plus I had quite the 11-year-old crush on one of the guitarists. 3.85 stars

Okay, very 80's sounding but very listenable. Pretty forgettable.

Great punk rock

It has good beats and songs. Really, watching their documentary lets you appreciate it better in knowing their history. Female bands get bad raps because they are compared to their male counterparts, but the Go-Gos really should get more credits for all they did by going over to Europe (fuckin Europe, that's where people appreciate music). And then when you think about, there were no all female bands doing what they were. It takes fucking guts to get into playing bands, especially the punk scene, and to do it as a woman, fucking more power to them. Is it the greatest album in the world? No, but is it a good album? Yes. And it's their debut album too with successful songs. Not bad at all. I like it.

80s pop/punk/new wave. At points almost sounds like a precursor to CA surf rock.

I've heard "We Got the Beat" before, but the rest of the album was a little bit grittier and a bit darker than I had expected. Solid early pop-punk.

i would give this album a 7/10 if i could. i love it overall and i love the music and singing and it together but it isn’t incredibly fascinating to me, but a 3 is too low and 4 is too high. i’m really conflicted, but nothing completely STUCK out to me which is why it’s a three.

Very consistent sound with the same style of guitar and drum throughout, the hits are obvious (our lips are sealed and we got the beat). Title is aptly named. Lots of fun drum fills. This one was a walk down memory lane. Love the couple of hits that came off this album. The rest was just so-so. Certainly listenable, but not that exciting either.

Love the bass. Wasn’t a fan of the vocals at the first listening but got used to it the second time.

For a long time when this first song ("Our Lips Are Sealed") was released I thought they were singing "Honest I See You..." (I was 10. but still.) Aside from the obvious all-female angle which was kind of a big "novelty" at the time (before ppl realized the music was just...good) it's not really groundbreaking musically and not super-repeatable but it's still just *fun* and catchy. Very melodic sing-along light up-tempo rock. A near guarantee for my generation (80s kids) to get an "oh my god!" if you put this album on with like-aged company. 6/10 3 stars.

Decent vocals and production, bass was enjoyable.

It didn't really stick in my mind. There's a couple of fun songs on it, and you can definitely hear the progenitors of punk and riot grrrl on this, but hearing it for the first time this year it doesn't sound that special.

Definitely fun to listen to! It was like a cross between the cool pop girl bands from the 60's and crossed it with punk/new wave. The harmonies are fantastic, the songs are well crafted and the hooks are everywhere. Great upbeat listen. Still love Our Lips ar Sealed.

É contrastante a queda do esforço, empenho e qualidade do pop atual em comparação com este álbum. No geral músicas simples com letras simples mas que funcionam bastante bem. Infelizmente não sou um apreciador do estilo, portanto não é algo que vá voltar a ouvir, contudo, é melhor que a maioria das coisas que passam na rádio hoje em dia. A great mix of late 70s punk and early 80s pop, kind of bridging the gap between bands like the Buzzcocks and mainstream radio. A perfect summer listen. Fav Tracks: Our Lips Are Sealed, Skidmarks On My Heart, Lust to Love.

This was a super fun album. Great early pop-punk songs and really well produced. This record casts an unacknowledged and long shadow on guitar pop bands to follow. 3.5/5 Favourite track: "Skidmarks on My Heart"

They're actually a pretty good pop/rock group. Kinda wrote them off for being a "Girl Group" b/c they were so packaged back when I first heard them in middle school. Certainly a solid 3.

Girl group New Wave. Best Tracks: How Much More, Tonite, We Got The Beat

"How much more" was my favorite non-hit track. I also liked "You Can't Walk in Your Sleep" and "Can't Stop the World"

Not go much to say but enjoyed this one. Similar style to Elastica, sort of punk rock stuff but I preferred Elastica. Enjoyed "How Much More", "Tonite" and "Automatic".

They've got the beat! This is pure, concentrated new wave in a bottle, and it's totally good for you maaaaan. It's simple enough: catchy hooks, drums keeping an peppy beat, and everything else to fill out the sound. There isn't anything else to this album; it delivers on the basics and that's all it needs to do. Songs don't stand out too much except for the two singles, but none of the songs are bad either! It's all good, that's pretty much it.

Bright, breezy, catchy..... like a prototype Kenickie without the snot nosed attitude. Enjoyed it immensely

Really liked this. It grabbed me in the first 15 seconds and didn't let go. Every track is catchy, melodic and fun. Apparently it is 'new-wave'. I'm not entirely sure what that means, but I would describe this as danceable, exuberant pop music played on guitars, with a bit of a punk edge. If this is what new-wave is, then I like new-wave. 4.5/5.

Upbeat!

I really wanted to like it - I love the opener but the rest of the album becomes a bit of a chore. You can appreciate how they opened the door but its just a bit to girl band at times.

“Beauty and the Beat” by The Go-Go’s (1981) Not familiar with this album. I’ve heard of this group. This album is pop. Musically, very simple, reminds me of The Archies and every other commercial pop group of the late 1960s. Instrumentals are plain. Lead and backing vocals lack talent. Poor diction and pitch control. No power. No vibrato. Songs seem to be written specifically for singers with limited range. Good engineering and mixing. Well-produced. Actually these are the talents on display in this album. “Lust to Love” had the potential for a powerful, driving rock song, but the vocals and instrumentals weren’t up to it. Almost every song ends with a too definite slam on the tonic. I wanted to say “cha cha cha” after each one. Lyrics are sappy. Even when they strain to sound profound, the “pony” and the “watusi” are so desperately retro. Cringe. I can only think of one reason why any record label would have wanted to sign them. 1/5

Fine a bit thin. A couple of the tracks are filled but a couple are real bangers.

Our Lips Are Sealed is surprisingly solid lyrically for a pop song. I liked the album more than I thought I would and only knew their two hits prior to listening.

Okay, I'm ready. This is pretty easy to listen to... Lips ages really well... we got the beat, not as much. Some pretty strong songs mixed in, make this enjoyable.

Another classic

Almost as if the Friends theme song was on repeat for 11 tracks in a row. Giving strong Glitter Boys vibes. Would dance to this music by spinning in circles while jumping up and down quickly. Title song sounds like a mash up of We Are The Kids in America, Green Day, and the movie Grease. Would make good music for dramatic soap opera montages or driving scenes in the movie Clueless. This album is not the song by Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj, nor is it similar in any way.

A classic. Not just an 80's classic, not just a new wave classic. A classic. I could bump this all day

Classic 80s vibes!

So many tracks I've never heard. Not a big fan of their up-beat jangly songs, which is what I always associated them with. But Fading Fast and Automatic in particular are great. Can hear the influence they likely had on Veruca Salt, Elastica, etc. Tough call, can I split this into two separate albums and rate separately?

it was such a bop. perfect new wave album with female leads. underrated honestly. last part dragged a bit as they all began to mesh together, but overall quality album.

This was a fun album! After listening to this, I can now hear the fingerprints of The Go Go's on many more modern bands, including one of my favorites, Harvey Danger. I assume this album made the list because it was one of the first albums with this sound, which, with a 1981 release date, would make sense to me based on my limited musical knowledge Also, great album title. My personal enjoyment: 3/5 Did it belong on this list: 4/5

Great fun, reminded me of a pop version of Hole. I had no idea Jane Wiedlin and Belinda Carlisle were in a band together. Will be listening again.

This was a really fun album to listen to. There were some songs that I had heard before. The new wave sound took me back to playing grand theft auto vice city. This was praised as being one of the first new wave albums.

Well, this one took my by surprise. Everyone knows The Go-Go's big hit "We Got The Beat" of course. That's where my knowledge of them ended until today. This is considered a cornerstone Nu Wave band but damn if it doesn't sound like a poppy punk album to me. A freaking great one at that. I found myself absolutely cranking this one and loving it. No negatives. Haters be damned, this album is fire. Loved it.
