Reviews (page 2 of 13)
So fun, go girly pop from the 80's
Loved this. Always knew off the go gos but hadn't really. Did not realise Belinda Carlisle was the lead vocals but they have that edgy pink vibe especially within the female punk space whilst also having that southern Californian / Australian coast beach vibe.
Surf punk\new wave, gone pop! I love everything about it. All of these songs are of outstanding quality, almost any one of them could have been "Our lips are Sealed" or "We got the Beat". Even the throwaway tunes like Skidmarks on My Heart are sublime. If the label had any sense they could have had the whole album on singles as A or B sides. This is so good that when it ended, I was sad and had to start it playing all over again.
I was not expecting this album to give me stank face. I was expecting reasonably competent 80's bubblegum pop. And it doesn't fail if that's all you're looking for. But it succeeds at SO much more. Completely blowing my expectations out of the water. This is top level post-punk or pop punk. The musicianship is incredible. Sounds like a team of top-flight session musicians. I say that as high praise. Incredible playing - tight, technical, skilled - without feeling like there's showing off or ego. The rhythm section goes HARD.
Man this album was a breath of fresh air. Loved it
Classic. Upbeat, infectious, feel good, pop-rock that has stood the test of time. 0 songs added to playlist but favorites the album.
This album gives me the feel of having the summer to drive wherever my heart desires. I especially was feeling that with We've got the beat, gave me a real desire to find a hairbrush to sing into.
I la la loved this
Genuinely great. How have I never heard this before?
The all female group from the 80's and this was a really fun album. At some points I got Cyndi Lauper vibes, other times it was Gwen Stefani, so it was interesting hearing how they spanned from fun pop to a punk rock sound. I didn't even think about that they were an all female band until my third listen through. There were and still are so few all female bands that it's great to hear just how ingrained some of their songs are in American pop culture. Our Lips Are Sealed and We Got the Beat are songs that everyone has heard before and are classics, along with their song Vacation (which isn't on this album). I would say that every song on here is so catchy and they did such a great job on making each song fun with great hooks. I can just imagine people driving around singing along with the album. Feels like that song Somebody That I Used to Know by Gotye is a direct response to the Go-Go's song Fading Fast. I know the Gotye song has the woman's POV with Kimbra, but there are so many parallel's to the Go-Gos song that it seems like more than a coincidence. What I do like about Fading Fast is that it is so upbeat. The guys a liar and she broke up with him and is moving on. I like that she's not really dwelling on it and even though he keeps calling, she just pretends "that he's somebody that she used to know." I mean the parallels between the two songs are uncanny. I also really liked Automatic, which is one of the lesser listened to songs on Spotify, but I thought it was catchy and cool. I mean there's just no bad songs on this one and even though i'm not a fan of "new wave", there is still enough of the punk rock element to make it really enjoyable. I think it what separates it from other albums is that every single song has a catchy hook. Even some of the weaker songs like Skidmarks On My Heart, are elevated by at least having a catchy hook and a good sound. They don't blow you away with a crazy vocal range or guitar solos, but it's consistent and fun the whole way through, which is NOT easy even for the top artists of any generation....not to mention this was their debut album.
one more time!
One of the touchstones of the 80s
I'd never heard of this band or had any idea Belinda Carlisle was in a new wave group before her solo career, so this was a nice find. This album is super immediate - it's packed with hooks and pretty much any of these tracks could have been a single. Great vocals and the rhythm section gives it a pleasing bounce and energy. I couldn't fail to enjoy this
This wowed me in a way I wasn't remotely expecting. Fantastic energy and amazing melodies.
Chart stats and legacy seems to be true.
Lovely early 80‘s Sound. 9.5/10
Obsessed
What a breath of fresh air. This record holds up really well!
Love the surf rock elements here Our Lips Are Sealed, perfect song
Hell yeah
good.
A very fun and upbeat pop album, which was quite refreshing from the last few heavy rock albums. I actually knew a few songs from earlier which I was shocked about, like We Got The Beat and Our Lips Are Sealed. Perhaps it’s because it’s a pop album, but I would definitely be listening to this one again often.
Fun, surfy girl pop
This album is historic. The only album featuring an all-female group who both wrote and played their own instruments to reach #1 on the charts. It's amazing. Favorite song: Fading Fast
Really fun really tight pop record that is the perfect length, only knew of the first song on the album but this record turned out to be a real surprise. Definite will return to this more often
mi mamá siempre supo de musica
Coming out of the LA punk scene and settling into a sort of 60s retro, power pop, new wave sound, The G-Go's were probably more fun and upbeat than many of their contemporaries. This, their debut album, has the two big hits - Our Lips Are Sealed and We Got the Beat - which remain little gems of joy. The other songs on the album might not quite hit the same highs as those two, but are solid pop-punk delights with duds and no skips. Thoroughly enjoyable even today.
The true definition of 'all killer no filler.' There is not a second of fluff on this album. No showy musicianship, no dragged out overly long songs, just everything that is necessary and nothing else. And such an iconic sound! Impeccable vocals, spot on harmonies, and perfectly succinct rhythm section. Take a drive up the coast on a warm night with the top down, and turn this up to 11.
It's been many years since I've listened to this entire album. It was in heavy rotation during high school, but fell out of favor as the next new flavor came out. I'd forgotten just how awesome this album is. Tonight and This Town are still my favorites.
L E G E N D A R Y
Fuck yeah I love me some New Wave, shockingly I haven't heard anything besides the mega hit of "We Got the Beat" which I find shocking because I don't think theres a bad track on the album. I think "Skidmarks on my Heart" is a little weak and corny lyrically but the instrumentation is still great. "Lust to Love is probably my favorite overall
Sweet punk
Just really good stuff, and the whole album has immense replay value. One of the core albums of the new wave genre, and I think it remains at the top level of pop achievement in general even 45 years later.
Fun and punchy album. Glad I discovered it! Favorite tracks : Our lips are sealed, Lust to love, We got the beat
Kende alleen het geweldige Lipps are Seaĺed. Maar de rest is ook heel fijn!! Springerige new-wave. Grappig dat het riffje in How Much More gejat is van His Latest Flame van Elvis. En geen idee dat ik This Town kende (hier haalde The Mo de mosterd!!) Toch deze LP maar eens kopen!
perfeito, divertido, tudo de bom
This is so dance-y and peak entertainment. I recognize the big hits on this album, but every song is great and easy to listen to. I love girl group pop, but I've never listened to this whole album. I feel like I'm missing out. This is an easy 5 stars, but I will say that no one song stands above the others. This is an album intended to be listened to as an album from start to finish. That can be fun, but it's not always what I want.
Great memories THE GO GOS
Legitimately really really good Best Song: Tonite Rating: 9/10 Stars: 5
5 out of 5. Their best album and a great band in general.
C'est frais ca fait du bien 4.5
LOVE LOVE LOVE
Fun!
God I wish malls were what they once were
Holy. Crap. This is so incredible how didn't i have this in my life before?!
Never heard of this group before and this is fantastic. I don’t know if I have any real notes but like very fun rock, unique sound. This might be my favorite so far
HELLOOOO THISIS PEAK
Great album. Lots of fun. Is it me or are there a lot of signs that this band influenced the 90s/00s punk scene in Chicago?
fire
A masteriece
Панк-рок, сёрф, новая волна. Ярко и интресено.
Bloody brilliant
the bass on "our lips is sealed" made me go HELL YEAH. I love bass. I honestly can't believe i've never heard of them... all the instruments sound so great with the singing. I LOVE new wave- also a girl group?!?! like blondie (who i love) but more. 5/5 hype
Lovely
“Our Lips Are Sealed” y “We Got The Beat” son los puntos álgidos del disco, pero yo tengo predilección “How Much More”, quizá porque me recuerda a “Rusholme Ruffians” de The Smiths (¿Johnny Marr copión?)
A pretty upbeat album with that classic rockish vibe, reminds me of teen beach movie lol Enjoyable, bring this type of music back
The Go-Go’s, girl empowerment extraordinaire for tween Gen X’ers!! I had just turned 12 in the fall of ‘81 when this came out, the peak age for this. And I ate it up with a spoon—Belinda Carlisle equal parts adorable and dangerous, the punk attitude of their roots, updated 60s-girl group style, and blistering drums and bass-fueled beats, as well as irresistible hits “We Got the Beat” and “Our Lips are Sealed.” I don’t care if nostalgia is fueling a several grade-inflation, this shit’s a 5.
Fun to dance to with the kids
Takes me back to high school. Just as fun to listen to all these decades later. Classic.
5 stars - Really enjoyable
Awesome
Great album.
damn, this slaps!!!! i knew we got the beat and our lips are sealed before this, but the rest of the album is chockablock with solid new wave tracks. i kept wanting to make comparisons to blondie for obvious reasons but there's so much more to it than that. a lot of these songs sound like themes for miles "tails" prower from the sonic the hedgehog games. maybe that's just belinda carlisle's voice and the overall vibes, quick chord changes, and tonal shifts. favorites: everything, really. though fading fast and automatic were the weakest for me personally.
Sounds of my adolesence! I love this album!
Enjoyed getting to hear this album as a whole for the first time. And then starting to unpeel the stories of each of the group members.
Hard to top this for 80's pop.
Never heard of this album before, but I’m glad I found it. The songs are insanely catchy, the songwriting is sharp, and the vocals have that perfect 90s feel. The album art is iconic and fits the vibe perfectly. Overall, it’s a genuinely enjoyable listen from start to finish. 9/10.
YUPPPPPP, reminds me of my mom!
Totally a breath of fresh air. What a great album.
A female new Wave band(actually they emerged from the punk scene but they evolved into a pop/punk band to be precise) with an early Belinda Carlisle in it and tight playing couldn't be more than an outstanding album that i actually own.And it might still is the only one pop/punk album that had clear vocals..! From the beginning you can hear what you are getting into and i tell you, you won't regret it for even one second! My most favourite songs(excerpt the whole album) are: Tonite,Lust To Love(Blondie vibes right there),This Town(although the refrain could be better),Fading Fast,Automatic(creative and interesting),You Can't Walk In Your Sleep(If You Can't Sleep). This album review really made my day after 2 previous dissapointing ones. It's a stellar record. 5/5 all the way!
Independent women in kinda „new wave-rage“. Definitely the better side of belinda carlisle :-)
Just started playing this album and i already know I'll love it because I LOVE WOMEN
can listen to this all day
5/5 - I needed to hear this, because I only know their hits. This was a solid debut album that was a lot of fun to listen to a couple times through. If you’re looking for depth here, you’re not gonna find it, but it’s perfect for what it sets out to be.
This feels like the ultimate new wave album. It ticks all the new wave boxes, but also has a lot of variety and is a lot of fun. 4.5/5.0: Excellent
80s Girl Power Pop. And it is awesome! Just a killer album with banger after banger. Loved this from start to finish. Such a fun listen.
Grave aimé, je me suis bien ambiancée, un peu entre Superbus et les Beach Boys, j'y reviendrai le pense. Mention spéciale à "Fading Fast"
Amazing
Increibly strong debut album. Less consistently solid that the two albums to follow, but still packed with strong pop-rock compositions. I bought this the first time I saw it in a record store almost 45 years ago and never regretted it.
Great proto pop punk album. Plenty of attitude with catchy beats.
I audibly gasped when I saw this was my album for the day. Even though I’m a 90’s baby, my mom introduced me to the Go-Gos early and I’ve always had a special relationship with this album, so my review is biased. It’s fun, it’s a little feminist, it’s surfy, it’s funky. Do the songs get a little repetitive? Sure, but never in a bad way. Best songs are This Town and Automatic. Belinda’s vocals are just as good so many years later.
One of the greatest albums ever produced. I will not be taking questions.
Track 1: always a bop, enjoyed this one greatly Track 2: kinda just blended all together for me. Bland. Track 3: I liked this one. I was bouncing to it Track 4: liking the flow of this one. This one is my favorite Track 5: this song is one to listen to when you get ready to hit the clubs at night. Track 6: well known, a bop. Always loved. Track 7: different from the first 6 songs, but appreciate it. My ears liked this one. Will be adding to faves. Track 8: another favorite on this album. The flow was nice. I've been sitting outside listening to this album and this was nice. Track 9: similar tune to the first couple songs. Another bop, was someone in the band tired??? Track 10: I love this one! Just danced out to it. Track 11: great song to end on. I pretty much loved this while album. There hasn't been a song that I've just outright disliked or wouldn't listen to again.
Big unexpected fun
thoughts: listening to some of the deeper cuts makes me think… is this where pop punk started? (probably not but it’s gotta be one of the first truly prominent albums to showcase the sound.) one of the catchier albums i’ve heard so far in this exercise; the hooks and the vocals are catchy as hell but even more so, they’re so obviously talented that they’re earning the earworms. songs: “how much more”, “we got the beat”, “fading fast” rating: 9.5/10
These were bops and so much fun! I could listen to this over and over.
This is a fantastic collection of pop-rock songs. Great guitar riffs and vocals. They have a really great synergy. Interesting that they started out as a punk band. I like this more with every listen. Our Lips are Sealed and We Got the Beat are of course the hits but there are so many other good songs on here that I've never heard before. Tonight, Lust to Love, Fading Fast, Automatic. There's not a bad song on this album. Pretty awesome debut!
You go girls, this album rocks! Loved it all.
i really love the 80s sound coming through. i already knew of the album, but i loved the cohesion and how it sounded overall. we got the beat!
Gøy!
No notes. perfect
There is nothing better than listening to the '80s - and enjoying it more the second time around. So great to hear a talented group of women inject energy into the culture .
How appropriate that I listened to this while driving along Florida's A1A, as the beachy atmosphere and scenery were the perfect backdrops for the album's SoCal-inspired punk-pop. I was excited to get this album because I grew up listening to the Go-Go's, but hadn't heard this fully in a long time. These talented women were true pioneers in new wave music, writing & playing everything on their own, and that ought to be enough to give them a high rating, but the fact is, they also have serious musical chops and solidly earn their rating. Everyone knows and loves the hits "Our Lips Are Sealed" and "We Got the Beat" but tracks like "How Much More" and "This Town" are great examples of how talented the Go-Go's really are. Belinda Carlisle's voice is enchanting, and this entire album will stick with you to create the best type of ear worm .
Love it!! Great pop music
album divertido y disfrutable me esta encantando bueniiisimo quiero escucharlo mejor con mas tiempo pero primera escucha impecable
This is the 177th album I’m rating. By the way a fantastic name for an album. Adding to my Playlist - Our Lips are Sealed, How Much More, Tonite, Lust to Love, This Town, We Got the Beat, Fading Fast, Automatic, You Can't Walk in Your Sleep (If you Can't Sleep), Skidmarks on my Heart, and Can't Stop the World. Not Adding to my Playlist - Nothing. We Got the Beat - Crazy that this song went to number two, and now nobody knows who they are. All in all I liked 11/11 songs. Great new wave band. They deserve to still be popular.
Cannot think about this album without feeling so nostalgic. Our Lips Are Sealed with Mary-Kate and Ashley - iconic. Really loved this album!
Really loved this. Anything that gets me dancing around the house is a 5/5. Perfect blend of new wave and pop. Feels timeless. Fave song: How Much More TIL: they are the first (and still the only!) all female band that wrote their own songs to reach the top of the charts
banger album
"our lips are sealed" and "we got the beat" are in my "oh whats that song called" hall of fame
classic early 80s girlpop. very valley girl. classic The Go-Gos and a must listen for any lover of 80s music, pop ballads, and female musicians. has punk influence, the new wave charm of the decade, and the album at no point feels stale or same-y. even gets a little bit surf rock with the guitar riffs
classic new wave, iconic
This album is an absolute gem. The Go-Go's are such an underrated all girl band, and this album has that irresistible 80's vibe from start to finish. Belinda Carlisle is on fire- her vocals are so fun. Upbeat and impossible to sit still in my chair.
The Go-Go's are great fun. This album is cheerful, snappy, well played, and feels very influential to female-led rock and rock in general when compared to more modern bands like Metric or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. We Got the Beat is definitely the best song here and it stands the test of time well, but I also liked Our Lips Are Sealed and Automatic.
At first I didn't like this album but as the years have gone by I began to love this album. Part pop punk, part new wave, it's an album that gets better with age.
Catchiest debut ever? The Go-Go's set the bar for pop-laden new age - unfortunately way too high for the heaps of less talented bands that followed.
Why would you want to release a new wave-record after listening to this? Do you really think you can improve the formula? Pff…
Shocked at how good this is. Just a solid pop punk album. New Wave condensed and perfected here
Call it a New Wave classic, call it a pop classic, play it for a lot of fun songs to bounce to.
Such a classic!
Too easily dismissed as throwaway pop music, this is a great achievement for the five women from LA's punk scene--the first #1 album of music entirely composed and performed by women. What's amazing to me (who heard it on the radio as a kid when it was first released) is that it took so long to achieve this. It's a great album, not a bad track; but let's hear it for Jane Weidlin, Belinda Carlisle, Charlotte Caffey, Gina Schock, and Kathy Valentine.
Great listening all the way through. Punk yet popy and melodic. Not a bad track in the bunch.
A perfect pop album.
Know the singles. The rest of the album is like Glam Punk. Likes it.
Great album, gets better every time I listen to it
FIYAH!!
A bit on the backburner for a long time and so glad I finally heard this. So infectious and so much more than a perceived 80s pop album.
Listened before?: Some! Loved it. Quick and fun and exactly right for a certain kind of mood!
Yet another reason to love the 80's. Power pop, pop-punk, punk-pop, garage rock... whatever you wanna call it, the Go Go's did it as well as anyone. Yet another one of the first records I owned (I was 8 in 1981), Beauty and the Beat might be a perfect album. It's punk sensibility made it unique among it's early 80's peers, it's influence on women in rock cannot be over stated, and it is high in the running for greatest ever debut album. Plus, it's just endlessly catchy and listenable from front to back, like forever and ever amen...5
Favorite: Fading Fast Least Favorite: Automatic
This remains a seminal album of new wave, punk pop of the 80s. It smells like Coppertone
Liked every song except for the hits, at least liked them better
Really fun. Kind of bratty, almost pop punk. A really fun listen.
One of my Favorites! 5/5 #musicsky #albumsky #AlbumADay
I needed this album today. So grateful to have some joyful music. We recently inherited a box of records, and this was in it. I listened to it for the first time about a month ago. It's a certified bop, and I'm 100% here for it. Didn't know it was on this list, but super glad to see it.
This is a fantastic album
Really enjoyed this album
Fun
I liked all of the songs
Great female lineup - enjoyed their sound a lot
This album takes me back to my college days and my pivot in my musical preferences towards this genre - what was called new wave at the time but really would be the alternative genre of today. It gets 5 stars just for the nostalgia alone.
This was full of bangers from start to finish. Loved it, will revisit.
I don’t think I ever really thought about the lyrics of the Go-Go’s, but listening to this particular album really made me focus on them, and they are really good. Overall, this is reminiscent of summer nights watching old teen movies on VHS cassette in the family room of my childhood home.
LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!
Super fun album, 7/10 of their Spotify top10 tracks from this album. Hard to not cheer up when hearing some of these upbeat songs. Probably a bit inflated but going 4.5/5 as it was good fun
A really fun upbeat album. Lots of catchy songs. Would definitely listen to it again!
Love this album. All the girls played really well and Belinda Carlisle’s voice has the perfect amount of sweetness without being squeaky and she can drop down enough to keep it interesting. Some timeless pop classics.
They're an all-female rock band with a fun album full of fun songs.
I had real fun with this one. Upbeat but not dull. The live versions are even better. 4.5/5
Such a fun album
One of the greatest debut albums in the history of punk and new wave. They cracked open the mostly male dominated punks and new wave on the charts in such a way that the American music industry was never the same again. One of my favorite power pop /punk / new wave / surf albums of all time. Love the cheeky way their album cover conveys their femininity in a punk way without actually sexualizing them. Favorite tracks "Our Lips Are Sealed", "This Town", and "We Got the Beat". Fun piece of trivia, "Our Lips Are Sealed" was written by Jane Wiedlin of the Go-Go's and Terry Hall of Fun Boy Three. Take a listen to the Fun Boy Three's version and hear a very different take.
Beautiful.
If The Beatles were a girl band in the 80's, they would sound just like this! I listened to "We Got The Beat" a few years ago for the first time, and I went crazy about it. At the time, I was discovering girls bands from the 70's and 80's like Blondie, Pretenders, Runaways, B-52's and many others, but never actually stop and listen to a Go-Go's album. They sound pop and very dancing. Simply but good lyrics and an amazing vibe. No mistakes here, 5 stars!
I've always loved this album, but it's probably hard for the youngsters to appreciate how revolutionary it was for a bunch of young women to write their own songs, play their own instruments, and make a #1 record. I see that it's not everyone's cup of tea, but it's an absolute classic, and you would not have your Bikini Kills or Best Coasts without them.
Awesome album
They had such a definitive sound from the get-go. American new wave pop with mild punk undertones. I also hear a lot Western & cowboy song influence in there, so giddy up, too!
A fun girl pop/rock album. I liked all the songs. It doesn't even sound all that dated considering it's from 1981. I'm giving it a 5/5.
Imagine being 42 years old, sitting in front of your computer at work, and pressing play on your new listening assignment, "It's that gal band that play a couple of fun tunes!" Memories of America's Funniest Home Videos classic montages run through your mind - pants falling down, drunk granny at the wedding, dogs wearing sunglasses, and the like. Once you press play you're instantly faced with the realization that this is nothing like you thought. You adapt or die! It's equal parts punk, new wave, and rock with super slick production. I came back for seconds! This record absolutely rips! Highlight(s): This Town/How Much More/Fading Fast Lowlight(s): Skidmarks on My Heart
Lots of fun!
multiple great songs. Underrated. Solid album.
oh I LOVE this
Fuck yeah 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻 What a comeback after the string of emo muppets. Also just a kick ass album!
Phenomenal album. Fell really fresh like it was released yesterday. Nice melodies, good vocals, really well produced. Immediately added to my library
okay im doing coursework so these r sparse n late notes but the level of technical talent on display here is better than some of the big serious classic rock or etc albums lmfao to say nothing of the catchy + enjoyable tone + subject matter. i think it would be easy to make a song like our lips are sealed cloying + its aaalmost too sweet + peppy for me but theres a kind of robust energy to it n a bit of edge even for the like "hush my darling" section. maybe its the chords? goddamn this is an earworm. same with how much more--this isnt the Mood of music i normally seek out but little turns like the 2nd verse being a bit diff + darker than the 1st verse is enough to hook me. the harmonies are so good. and then THEEEERES A CHARGE IN THE AIR (TOOOONIIIITE) ITS KIIND OF ELECTRIC OUT HEEEERE (TOOONIIIITE) THERES NOTHING AND NO ONE TO STAND IN OUR WAYY. oh my god the post chorus OOOHs are B ) i feel like im a little awkward freshman in gym class but hanging out w the popular senior girl who ended up stuck taking a gym class also and is not the kind of person i would think would be nice to me but is actually chill n big sister energy. yknow. like that vibe. LUST TO LOVE THIS IS THE STANDOUT OF THE ALBUUUUMMM god this is a "music video in my head" fodder of all timer. and the drums in this one also rule. like i think its having sick ass really competent prominent drums that make this stand out beyond generic Music From the 80s to Music From the 80s (Positive). this town is extremely people from california think theyre main characters i would not live there if i could even tho thats where sixty percent of the video game jobs are but it does sound rlly cool. also like damn its nice to get smth talking abt the experience of being a woman trying to break into entertainment instead of [gestures]. can we apply bbc rules to a 1001 albums list where 50% of it needs to not be cis men. WE GOT THE BEAT THIS IS ANOTHER GOOD AS HELL ONE. the bass!! the little just clapping section. fuck yeah this is truly the gold standard of albums to listen to all the way thru doing a task that requires energy but focus. okay i know im like THIS IS A GOOD ONE abt all of them but FADING FAST THATS A REALLY GOOD ONE like you fucking tell him. love how much minor key they do on this album btw + like the drums im not kidding. this stuff is rocking! i love how mysterious automatic is. okay YOU CANT WALK IN YOUR SLEEP (IF YOU CANT SLEEP) THIS IS MY WRITING MUSIC. FINALLY. DELICIOUS. also mood sleep is 1 thing you cant buy goddamn mood. i love how its so peppy while also being juuust kind of a little bit ominous musically. skidmarks on my heart is like the 1st track where im like okay the album doesnt need this its just kinda there. i do just adore their really cinematic chords all the time <33333 okay by title youd think cant stop the world is defeatist just learn to live with it but WHY LET IT STOP U?? is a much MUCH better n more inspiring message. the go gos say, take it easy....but take it! reallyyyyy nice here i was expecting a 3 + got ngl a 5! standout tracks: tonite, lust to love, fading fast, you cant walk in your sleep (if you cant sleep). would i buy a physical copy: you bet your fucking ass i would. biggest weakness: i guess they could go even more ham on subject matter like you cant walk in your sleep but tbh i feel like for what it is (fun kinda punk kinda pop energetic girl band) this is the platonic ideal
Girls fucking rule. The Go-Go’s write fantastic pop rock that could have come out of 1966 or 2076. They bring a pink edge to bubblegum pop that’s been the inspiration for tons and tons of acts after them. Their two hits, “Our Lips are Sealed” and “We Got the Beat” are classics for a reason but there’s so many other gems on here. “How Much More” and “Can’t Stop the World” keep the beat rolling along while “Lust to Love”, “This Town” and “Fading Fast” take a darker edge with vibes of the Shangri-Las. And it’s not just the songs - this is just an incredibly solid band, right on beat, always in sync, perfectly working together. Zero bad things to say about this album.
This kind of jangly-pop/post-punk is exactly my kind of music, and this album does it incredibly well. Love everything about it, fun riffs, rhythm is tight, love the vocals. Wish i'd heard it earlier, but i'll be replaying it very soon.
I only knew one of the songs before. I like them all. Great. Favorite song: tonite
Good solid 80s music.
This song makes me smile from start to finish! Of course I spent hours dancing to it as a teenager, so I’m biased. It holds up though! All these years later! Other albums have disappointed me by not aging well, but this still has me moving. It’s actually better than I remember! Peppy beat, good production, fun lyrics. The Go-Go’s are a great fun vibe.
Just a perfect bubblegum pop album. Pure fun. I had only heard the singles before this listen but the Go-Go’s have a new fan!
This album pairs exceptionally well with my morning caffeine buzz. Jam after jam it’s such a blast
There’s a reason they called it the cocaine 80s. This whole album feels like one big snort. Like pop rocks in a can of Jolt … ready to boogie.
One of the great New Wave albums, Beauty and the Beat hit the market just as New Wave and (first wave) Punk were peaking. The New York scene had spun off the London scene and eventually migrated to Los Angeles. The Go-Gos were born out of this LA punk community and released this debut only a year or so after New Wave and Punk had gone mainstream. The birth of MTV also worked in their favor. Their timing was impeccable. Timing alone wasn't enough. This is one of those albums where every song is really good or great. Sure, everyone's heard radio and MTV favorites Our Lips Are Sealed and We've Got The Beat, but those are just the singles they chose. Skidmark's On My Heart is one of my personal favorites, yet it's only a favorite amoungst more favorites. Beauty and the Beat is the classic example of lightning in the bottle - an amazing debut, full of incredible songs that captured the zeitgeist of the early 80s and New Wave in general. It belongs in every serious collection.
Very 80s and lovely!!! Full girl band rockin out!
Pop, fun, and a girl group! What else do you need??
A wonderful album of power pop.
Love it shocked that it was this good
Why didn’t anyone ever tell me that The Go-Go’s were so good?! I’ve heard the singles off this album on the radio and everywhere else they get played, but they’re not even close to the best tracks on this record. This is equal parts new wave, surf punk, and good old fashioned grrl power! As a big fan of Best Coast, I really enjoyed listening to this record, and I also enjoyed discovering how influential this album and band were on a lot of my favourite surf band. I think my favourite track is “You Can’t Walk In Your Sleep(If You Can’t Sleep). The bassline drives the whole song, the lyrics are catchy and witty. I really struggle to complain at all here. I’m going to have to dive further into this groups discography, I think. I don’t know what I was expecting, but this album really blew my expectations away. 5*
Hell yeah. Girls rule - or in this case, they rock 😎 The songwriting on this album is rather simple, but it’s used very effectively. In its simplicity it reminds me of early-mid 60s pop or Motown, but the sound is undeniably new wave, and it’s a fantastic new wave record. I can think of at least a dozen indie bands who are at least partially indebted to the Go-Go’s for the blueprint this album created, especially female-fronted groups of the late 2000s-mid 2010s. It’s very fun. It’s very 80s. Their harmonies are great. It’s sunshine-soaked new wave - whats not to love?
Definition of bop. 4.5.
This is a solid album from start to finish and may be one of the best debut albums I've heard. Personal enjoyment: 5/5 Relevance to this list: 5/5
Unexpected jewel Gran rock 90tero
I've been such a fan of Belinda Carlisle and her voice ever since I was a kid. So revisiting this classic from The Go-Go’s made my morning. This is such a fantastic Pop Rock album with New Wave sounds blended in. It’s some of the best The 80’s had to offer and is an album that stands the test of time. I was jamming out at the grocery store while listening to this one. 4.5 / 5
I hadn’t heard of The Go-Go’s before today. Almost immediately, I felt like this would be an album that I’d like a lot. The reason for this is because it reminded me quite a lot of Plumtree. It’s raw and messy garage rock, made by the rarity that is a fully female rock band (further paralleling Plumtree). I love how fun this album feels. It sounds like the band were having a great time recording it, and that leaked onto me as a listener too. If you like garage rock, or generally enjoy when music isn’t overly polished, give this a listen.
This is a refreshing surprise. An actually upbeat album on this list? I was having an angry day at work today, and listening to this lightened my mood slightly. My employees thank the Go-Gos for this magical delight.
Pure power 80s pop! Fantastic listen!
Incredible album from start to finish! Their influence on other later awesome bands like Sleater-Kinney and Haim is palpable. Solid 5/5
Day357 - not just the hits but the whole album is amazing. they were long overdue for induction into the rock and roll hall of fame
awesome
These guys are just fun and I’ll listen whenever. They caught me in a good mood but they do what they do so well. No song stands out but it’s just a solid whole album with every song being at least a 4/5. This album has left Skidmarks On My Heart.
A very impressive slice of pop/ punk Will come back to this one
A really great new wave album, lots of hits and the lesser known songs didn't drop the level
Quiet now Still of night Inside fire burning bright Right moment Laying down Oh, still no sound It's all automatic No thought Automatic Golden hair Skin glisten Beating heart but don't listen Angles sharp Crash together Time and consciousness sever Mind in automatic Time stop Automatic I unironically love this album. Its got some of the strongest feel-good vibes of anything that the 80s ever produced, and its just simply great. 5/5
Great album! It has held up very well for an album that was released 40 over years ago. Not a bad song on the album. Too bad it was so short; I was really enjoying it. A classic. Vinyl worthy.
I can say that I had a great time listening to this album. It's rock. It's pop. It's a mix of both that resulted in a great album. And I'll say more: this is the first album I've heard from the band and I'm excited to continue learning more about the band's work.
Slayy
I really enjoyed it! I didn’t know Belinda Carlisle was part of an all-girl punk / new wave band, and it reminds me of the Ramones but with an all-female lineup.
Love it. I didn't know this album and that's why I love this journey
This is another hidden gem that I was looking for and for which I didn't know how to ask. Thank you!
Superb
Have never heard of The Go-Go's and this album is amazing, it's kinda punkish, it's got a bucket load of energy and lasts just long enough without overstaying. I think it's a other 5 which may make this my best week ever
Nice!
This was fun
I knew the Go-Gos singles from hearing them all the time as a kid, but never listened to a full album until much later in life. I was surprised at how cool and punky they were, and at least on this album, how great their deep cuts were. They have a similar aesthetic to the Ramones for me, where they take what's essentially the sound of the early 60s and give it a modern sheen. I really like the vocal interplay between Belinda Carlisle and Jane Wiedlin, and Charlotte Caffrey has some really cool surf-influenced guitar work. Probably my favorite album of 1981. 5 stars.
Exhilarating, succinct pop songs. One of my favorite albums of the 1980s. 5 stars
It's refreshing to finally have some female artists up in here! I think I was reading online that less than 10% of this list is female which is really disappointing, because TBH as a women I definitely resonate more with music written by other women. Perhaps this is a close minded way to view music and content, but we live in a society so dominated by men's taste that it's nice to have something on this list that feels unapologetically feminine.
Pistas favoritas: "Skidmarks On My Heart", "We Got The Beat", "Can't Stop The World". PD: Es muy muy bueno, escúchelo, por favor.
fun n lovely!
Really fun album. Saved it and will definitely listen again when in need of its dancey feel-good vibes!
A perfect indie pop record. Still sounds fresh.
This album hit a sweet spot for me. Little pieces of punk and surf fueling high energy music. The instruments and voices sound great and well mixed. A nice variety in the song writing. I only knew the singles going in, but I was so impressed by this album. I would absolutely listen to it again.
Fan of Tonite and Lust to Love
I’m a huge fan of this album, I love the shimmery summery vibes it creates, the fun pop essence. So yeah, weirdly I apparently like it more than Highway 61? I mean, it’s all subjective so probably more like they’re the same amount of like, but because of mood it gets a higher ranking. You’re welcome, Belinda Carlisle!
I did not expect this to be as good as it is. Like someone else said here, this is why we do this project, to find hidden gems we otherwise would’ve totally missed. I gave it 5 just to spite the guy why gave it 1 and is just too pretentious to have fun.
this album goes so hard. I can feel the influence hard in stuff today
ABOUT DAMN TIME I GET AROUND TO THIS Yeah, this is exactly what I need in a poppy & slightly punky album. Sound is clear, nothing over the top, awesome vocals, range of songs, perfect length (35 mins) and sheeeetttt (Samuel L Jackson voice) this came out in 1981 (way ahead of its time). Our lips are sealed, How much more, skidmarks on my heart were my favorites. 4.5 stars and rounding up.
Love this album. Great 80s vibe and much more punk sound than I expected. 4.5 rounded up to a 5. Great band!
I never heard of them, I'm glad to listen to this record. It's really entertaining quality pop punk/post-punk. Good riffs, a bit of surf on top of it, good vocals (in the genre), strong vocal harmonies/backing vocals. At first I was going to give it a 4 and it actually gets better, there are stronger tunes in the middle of the album and even some darker melodies at some point.
bop after bop after bop
Oooo wasn't aware of this. Love it
5/5 Catchy lyrics, easy-on-the-ears instrumentals and harmonious vocals make this an amazing album. The guitars and bass meld so well to make some real grooves, which with quality production forms a fantastic pop-rock experience. Our Lips Are Sealed 4.5/5 How Much More 5/5 Tonite 4/5 Lust To Love 5/5 This Town 5/5 We Got The Beat 5/5 Fading Fast 5/5 Automatic 5/5 (FAV) You Can't Walk In Your Sleep (If You Can't Sleep) 5/5 Skidmarks On My Heart 4/5 (LEAST FAV) Can't Stop The World 4.5/5
So this was a total shocker for me. I liked this album a lot more than I thought I would. I knew of The Go-Go's of course but never really gave them a shot, just kind of wrote them off as a bubblegum pop kind of thing probably just based on We Got The Beat which I've never really cared for. But damned if this album wasn't a lot more than I expected. It's almost like punk-lite, early new wave, 80s girl rock, sappy pop all blended together. The songs are not necessarily complicated but they are well structured and super catchy and well palyed. It's sad that they basically just fizzled out. I think the production on most of this album could have been a little better but maybe that's just a result of the time and them being an all female band. I can't imagine that they were working with super great producers and engineers. It's not bad but I wish it had a little better balance in some parts and the sound was a little fuller. It's mostly kind of tinny. But still, it's a great record and I'd absolutely pick this one up if I saw it in the record store. 4.5/5 rounded up because of how great the surprise was.
How many parents in 1981-82 bought this album for their daughters thinking it's bubblegum pop. Instead, they opened the kids' eyes to a tidal wave of punk rock agony and irony, all wrapped up in a nice bow of Belinda Carlisle and Jane Wiedlin. Honestly, I'd never listened to the *lyrics* of Go-Go's songs before this -- I mean, "We Got The Beat" is really "You're all conformist assholes, grow up." And it's so *lesbian* in an 80's coded way. The kids got to keep this a secret I was too young myself to understand at the time -- and really didn't for 40 years. Unexpected bangers: Lust to Love, This Town, Automatic, Skidmarks on my Heart.
'60s girl-group pop influences delivered to your ears through the filter of late '70s LA punk. I love everything going on here. Definitely a big help in moving new wave on to the mainstream in the early '80s. Everything here is just upbeat and catchy. Hard not to have a good time listening to this.
Day 23 of listening to 1001 albums, one album at a time. The Go-Go’s is one of the pop bands you had no clue you knew until you hear them. I genuinely never knew who made We Got The Beat, turns out it was them. They also made an entire album full of bops and hits. Every song on this album gives so much energy and really radiates that new wave sound. It’s hard not to love this album, the punk attitudes with great pop instrumentals. I’ve never been more happy to listen to pop album. The Go-Go’s are officially one of my favorite pop bands. I do want to mention the album is awesome. I thought it was a painting at first because of how it looked but turns out they took that photo and then returned those towels to Macy’s. Great album.
I have an episodic relationship with this album. I was 12 when this album came out. I heard the singles - everywhere. And what singles they are. Our lips are sealed is an all time debut album lead off track. The bridge still gives chills. And we got the beat - does that not take you to a place even if you've never been. But I was a kid just getting my musical legs and those adolescent legs were drifting in the direction of Def Leppard. Cut to college. One of my housemates was a bass player and he was obsessed with this album. Especially the bass playing. We listened often and he was spot on. Kathy Valentine really lays an axing foundation that provides energy to the great songwriting and harmonies. Really everything works on this album. And lest we forget - 1981. How Much More is two years before REM is murmuring. Tonite, This Town, You Can't Walk..., Skidmarks. Ultimately - this album feels like a centerpiece that extends back to 60s girls groups and (just a hint of) surf guitar and well into the future as new wave was just breaking. A genuine classic and sounds even better as summer is just breaking.
Perfection.
A Truly iconic and Wonderful Album from my Past!! Love ❤️ the Go-Go’s!!
A great debut album that holds up very well.
This is cracking good fun. And who, but who, could not love a track called "Skidmarks on my heart"?
Holy shit I love this. Who knew how mature bubblegum pop could be. There's great diversity, and keeps things simultaneously interesting and light hearted without ever feeling cheesy or annoying.
Exactly my kinda music
What a fun album. God I love the basslines in throughout the whole runtime. Awesome vocals that really fit the tone and backing instruments. I still prefer the Fun Boy Three version of “Our Lips are Sealed” but I think is the more successful version. Bunch of great songs on here. 9/10
P.s. lei è più famosa da solista (Heaven is a place on earth)
Rather excellent for a debut album.
This album has no skips? The vocal quality of the singer is enchanting and the songs are catchy and upbeat. Even the songs that aren't as pop centric are still engaging and entertaining to listen to. Reminiscent of surf rock that would become popular in the 2010s.
I got this for my 11th birthday, it was the first record I got that wasn’t for the family. I loved this one, probably listened to it 200 times. A cool all girl band was so empowering for an 11 year old girl who played the drums. Its still a great record.
In my eyes, this album has only two flaws: 1. Choosing to name a song “Skidmarks On My Heart.” (Even though it’s one of my favorite songs here.) 2. Not being able to time travel and including “Vacation,” which I now know is unfortunately on their second album. If it had been on here, though, I’d have rated this 6 stars. I just adore bratty cheerleader punk, and Beauty and the Beat is the blueprint for that entire aesthetic. Crazy that I haven’t heard this before. New favorite album, and a perfect Warm Weather Record™️.
I didn't expect this sound!
This was a really good album and I really enjoyed it.
Surprisingly very enjoyable. They are very consistent tracks, probably not too technical but very tight and high energy. Probably what I would have aspired to when I was still in a band. Classic New Wave in a good way.
Just irresistible. Those backing vocals have a soothing effect behind the spikiness that is their hallmark.
This was really awesome! Enjoyed it a lot.
I had a really great time listening to this one, what a little boogie
Love this pop-punk gem
Great album. Full of energy. Uplifting and easy to listen to.
This was a blast to listen to! I didn’t thing I knew The Go-Go’s but it turns out a handful of the songs I was familiar with. From top to bottom this is all killer stuff. Can’t wait to dive in again. 5/5
Go-Go's - Beauty and the Beat Debut album by the Go-Go's. Released in July of 1981 and reached number on Billboard's Top LP's & Tape charts in March of 1982. Biggest hits: Our lips are Sealed and We Got the Beat One of my favorite bands from the 80s and the starting point for one Belinda Carlisle and Bill & Ted's own Joan of Arc, Jane Wiedlin. True rock band from the 80s. 5/5
About as perfect as pop gets! I listened to this album on vinyl so much during the pandemic!
I found this album surprisingly good. I was engaged the entire listen and it brightened my day. I really needed it.
One of the BEST 80s LPs!
Our Lips are Sealed is such an anthem!
Pretty good
What a great pop album, bangers front to back
Such an amazing album
This is pure 80's perfection.
Take me back to my teen years! Excellent album
Now this is how you do an '80s pop masterpiece. Vocals that are actually good. Melodies that are actually catchy. Instrumentation that has character - I love the surf rock overtones in it. Most of all, I love how they don't take themselves too seriously. One of the most charming surprises I had from this list.
The best songs on the album are the ones that WERE NOT the hits on the radio. Great album.
Wow. Pop-rock ochentero de mujeres!!! y Belinda Carlisle! No tenía idea gracias 1001 álbumes
I did not expect to recognize half of the album. They have so many iconic songs!
Fantastic....really the best of the Go-Go's!
So jolly, love it!
80s girly pop. Straight up my alley, I was singing along.
Yes! Incredible new wave punk energy. I'm in love!
Greatest Girl Band ever
Cool
Really fun!
The overall feeling of the album does not allow you to feel bad for one second. I loved the fact that it's an all girl group and was extremely upbeat about typical girls being girls. Some pretty cool harmonies throughout, and while it wasn't overly deep lyrically, the happy vibe made up for it. I could really see this being a favorite album of mine if I grew up in the time it was released. Really had me thinking, "You go, girls!"
pues este esta de locos debería haberlo puesto en Kill bill 5/5
always a sucker for an all girl rock band 🫶
Amazing voice
surprisingly very pleasant
Love it! Upbeat! Also love the name of the album. Fave songs 'Our Lips are Sealed' and 'We Got the Beat' 5/5
really liking the energy on this one. sounds so recent but with that raw classic bass sound and the chorus guitars. it also doesnt have that shitty 80s drums sound which i always makes me puke. sounds very influential.
This album had one goal - to make its listeners get up and dance - and it accomplishes it beautifully. Any song here could have been a hit.
Amazing! I loved this album
Enjoyed this album. Clocking in at a crisp 35 minutes the time flies bopping my head
An absolute perfect post-punk / new wave album from a band that ended up becoming a superstar pop group. This Go-Go’s album is one I pull out and listen to AT LEAST once a year, if not more.
Complete surprise. Upbeat new wave awesomeness
Ahhh the memories
Love this album. One of the best bands from this era/genre
Banger after banger
'81 woman-led post-punk pop rock album. It's really great - and, I think, very important!
Fun times with the girls and connecting with their past
Good early female soft punk
Wow! I loved this so much! What a great album - I had heard 'Our lips are sealed' but never listened to any other music by The Go-Go's - I've been missing out all these years! This was fun and full of early female punk rock power - so good Fave track: Lust to love
Phenomenal record. Group member Chris wrote an article a while back about how We Got The Beat would be a smash if it were written exactly as-is this decade, and I feel this praise can be extended to the record as a whole. The energy and attitude is so clearly an influence on so many talented contemporary artists I love and respect. It shouldn’t go unmentioned how talented these women are as instrumentalists and performers. I feel the real standouts on the record though are Jane Wiedlin and Charlotte Coffey on guitar, not just for their electric performances but also their incredible songwriting which dominates this record. It’s truly a spectacle to behold. Top tracks: Our Lips Are Sealed, How Much More, Tonite, This Town, We Got The Beat, Skidmarks On My Heart
A great debut. They did exactly what they needed to do
Timeless.
Geil, hat Spaß gemaxht
Wow! A perfect album! We got the beat is right! I was blown away by this album, mostly because I only have heard the two singles that were played around the clock. I still remember the band driving around singing “Our lips are sealed” on MTV, it’s planted in brain. I’ve also always liked Belinda Carlisle voice. But this album surprised me with their punk roots, yet more polished. And they created this debut album with no outside help. All songs great but a few standouts for me: How Much More, Tonite, Lust to Love, Fading Fast and Automatic, which was just incredible. It would have been amazing to see them play live when this album was released! Such energy.
Not bad
Some good hits on this album. Girl power!
This album couldn't be any more 80's!
Banger central
1981. I looooove the Go Gos. I remember singing their songs. Takes me back in time. Fun. Our Lips Are Sealed and We Got The Beat are songs I remember with fondness.
Never listened to them before. Great album, will def keep it in rotation. 5/5
Way better than anticipated. Guitar tone was consistent but still interesting on every track. The bass being so prominent was surprising but also incredibly well done. Just a really great album altogether.
Great album.
Tis solid
Really fun and consistent pop album. We Got the Beat still slaps
1981. Solid and catchy alt rock.
very pleasant and fun sounding
What a solid album. I just enjoyed it. Nothing took me out of it. Listened to it twice and then some other tracks here and there. How Much More! Lust to Love is a banger Automatic might be my favorite. This is probably going on a more regular rotation.
