Album has much more of an edge than I was expecting (because I had only ever heard We Got the Beat and Vacation) and it's really cool. Big fan of This Town, Lust to Love, and who am I kidding, We Got the Beat rocks. Kinda drags in the second half.

I picked up a copy of this on vinyl from a bargain bin on a trip to Washington, DC about 12 years ago. Delightful to revisit! High-energy and fun. I love Belinda Carlisle’s voice.

Great memories of seeing them at the Greek. Our Lips Are Sealed puts you in a place immediately.

They have only one gear but it's one that makes this a fun album to listen to.

This album has been in my life for many years, it’s one that has always been a favorite of mine. It’s just a great pop album with a bit of a punk edge, a pretty solid album all the way through in my opinion. This was an easy 5 stars for me. I actually have both cover variants of the vinyl and a copy on CD so I think I must like it somewhat:)

Fun songs, but I was disappointed that the rest of the songs didn’t reach the heights of the two famous singles.

This album was huge when I was a kid, the two giant hits, "Our Lips Are Sealed" & "We Got The Beat" were on the radio and MTV non-stop. I can say I've never listened to it all the way through so this is new to me. I always wondered what they would have been like in the clubs before they got signed, a bit more punky and edgy, I assume. Someone polished them up and made them (a little too) family friendly. "Tonite" is a great 80's song, layered and polished, with a hook and an upbeat new wave sound. "This Town" was a minor hit, it's got a good guitar melody but pretty average. The two giant hits, have 91M listens ("Lips") and 112M listens ("Beat"), so they're still getting played by the next generation. This was one of the first all-girl bands to see major success as not just singers but musicians. There's good vocal work, nice guitar licks, steady drum/base lines, they weren't a joke like so many boy bands that came after them. I respect this album and the impact it had at the time - it was groundbreaking, it had the hits, has staying power & is likeable. 3.5 stars.

I only knew the hits off this. The hits are fun, but the deep cuts are so much better! Tonight and Automatic are standouts for me.

Original and fun

The Go-Go’s came and Went Went, but their hits are enduring. Especially “We Got the Beat” and (on their premature follow-up album) “Vacation.” This album is a great pop accomplishment and brings me right back to the early 80s whether I’m ready or not.

This is a super fun album. Sure, it is perfect pop simplicity, but there are flashes of musical depth on this album. Excellent drums and some really strong bass work that drive memorable hooks. If the lyrics had been a little stronger, I think they could have grown into a real band to be reckoned with. As it is, I will enjoy and sing along with the hits and smile at a simpler side of the 80s.

Holy shit I was not expecting the Go Go's to drop an absolute bomb on me on a low key Tuesday morning after a long holiday weekend. This is what you want, like, every day from the generator...an album you've never heard before from a band you're maybe a little familiar with but then HOLY SHIT THIS IS AWESOME. This is absolutely fantastic. Hooks. Beats. Melodies. Great vocals. Personality. Nothing wasted. Tight songs. It's new wave adjacent and punk adjacent. I think you can easily look at the surface of this band and label them as cute early 80s girl pop with bright songs and fun videos but it's a lot tougher than that. It's got punk roots, it's fast...the hooks are great. There's some teeth here. Every song works, the energy never drops and I had a fucking blast listening to it. Matter of fact, I think I'm gonna listen to it again.

These deep tracks actually slap. How much more, lust to love (which has a dope staccato guitar riff), etc.

Brilliant album I love it. I've been listening to each songs more than five times great choices. I cannot believe that his songs are made in the 80s that's way before oasis break up so I feel like I wasted my life before I noticed this album and yeah, basically I'll get five for this. I'll come back to this album often and listen to all of those songs

I always get a sense of dread when I see the term New Wave in an albums description, I don't normally care for it, but this album was great. I knew quite a few of the tracks without knowing who they were by. I also didn't know Our Lips Are Sealed was written by Terry Hall from the Specials. A really enjoyable, slightly unexpected album 4*

Lips are sealed is an absolute 10/5 classic of an opener but the whole album maintains a high standard. Lovely jangly guitars, harmonies and bittersweet melodies. Absolutely hits all my sweet spots including the fantastic musical bass lines that drive everything along

Pretty standard pop-punk of the era with a couple hits. "Our Lips Are Sealed" was WAY better than the rest of the album

the Go Gos. Obviously I know the band and the big hits - but never something I’ve listened to with intention before. Playing through “Beauty and the Beat” tonight - and goddamn this is a power-pop/pop-punk/rock n roll masterpiece. Every note is perfect. Short and to the point - 35 minute album, doesn’t overstay its welcome. Catchy and energetic - but not repitive. Each song has a little unique flair. Fucking love this. Rock and roll.

Most artists on the I.R.S. label from that time are gonna get high marks from me. Miles Copeland assembled a lineup that was at the cutting edge of New Wave. Their influence is still felt today.

Catchy 3 minute pop songs from an all-female band. The whole thing clocks in at 35 minutes. What's not to love?

This album doesn't let up from beginning to end, serving up 11 enjoyable pop-rock tracks that seem to be fun without effort. The big hits, We've Got The Beat and Our Lips Are Sealed are easily my favorite moments, but the whole thing sports fun guitar licks, and engaging drums... with vocals that mostly work with the material. I could probably do without a couple of the lesser tunes... You Can't Walk In Your Sleep (If You Can't Sleep) borders on irritating. Maybe it feels a little too disposable for full marks, but those two hits are some of my favorite songs of the era.

You can hear the punk influence on this band. They've taken it and made it more accessible to mainstream audiences. Pretty brilliant stuff.

I found this one surprisingly listenable. There are some interesting instrumental parts I wouldn't have expected, ranging from almost punk-ish palm mutes to surfy-psychedelic stuff. Not my favorite, but I dreaded this one before I checked it out.

Awesome debut: those girls were great musicians (the rythmic section is particularly good) and could make sleak, fun, energetic new wave (more on the pop/rock&roll side than on the punk one...). Not a single a filler here.

I was kinda dreading this one, but it was better than I expected. I'm not much of a pop listener, but I can see why they had a following in the 80s. I hate the song We Got the Beat though, but enjoy Our Lips Are Sealed a decent amount.

1981. Debut album. Has been described as one of the cornerstone albums of American new wave music (a lighter and more melodic "broadening of punk culture"). Three of the members attended the Sex Pistols' final performance in San Francisco in January 1978, and afterwards were inspired to form their own band, even if they didnt know how to play instruments. They had a hard time finding a label (singer thought it was because they were an all-female band). One of the most successful debut albums of all time.

I debated a bit what score to give this album, cause one hand it's quite short, and the sound of it is so coherent it does feel a bit repetitive after multiple listens. But on the other hand, I did spend all day vibing with the Go-Go's, it is so catchy, with zero filler or meh songs. I thinks it has energy, ambition, some of the lyrics are quite funny, and at the end of the day I really loved it. They are quite helped by being in a lane with few competitors, and therefore they stand out a lot, and with this being a debut album, I'll just give in to the fun ride

This album is okay. Listening to it felt light and energetic, but also quite similar from track to track. The band stays in a bright, upbeat new wave and pop rock lane the whole way through, and while that gives the record a consistent mood, it also means not much really stands out as the songs go on. There is a clear early 80s American new wave energy here. The vocals are lively, the playing is tight, and the overall feeling is cheerful and straightforward. It works fine as easy listening, but it rarely becomes more than that. The songs share a similar tone and approach, so the album starts to feel a bit samey after a while. The production is clean and polished in the typical early 80s style. Everything is well recorded and radio friendly, with a bright sound that fits the material. It never gets messy or overcomplicated, but it also does not take many risks. Beauty and the Beat is a decent and consistent record. Enjoyable enough in small doses, but not something that left a strong impression overall.

Eh, kinda bland. It sounded tinny and awful, I thought someone messed with my EQ. The hits are fine, but nothing special.

Fav: Lust to Love L: Automatic 3 How much more (of this list) can I take before I go crazy? At the end of Skidmarks On My Heart they sing "I'm driving in risk" but I kept hearing "I'm dominant race" and I was like what am I listening to. Anyway, this album frustrated me. Almost every song needed something more, more shape, more speed and energy or more emotion. Like if these songs were like 20% more interesting in some way or another this would be an amazing album. It's still good though. Album cover: 4 I think its color palette and take on the basic these are the band members is good. Album title: 1.5 A cappella group name type of title in a bad way. They do have We Got The Beat as a song in there though so not quite a complete throwaway album title.

A really fun album and one that I was almost completely unfamiliar with. I've heard "We Got the Beat" and a cover of "Our Lips Are Sealed" before, but everything else was new to me. The sound of this album was infectious; I was tapping my toe along with the album almost the whole time. The music is crystal-sharp and upbeat. I'll be coming back to this one for sure. Favorite track: hard to go wrong with the fantastic opener "Our Lips Are Sealed"

This album is still as close to a perfect blend of new-wave meets power-pop as you'll ever hear from one of the best all female bands! Also launched the wildly successful career of Belinda Carlisle. A classic! 4.5⭐️

All time favorite - one of those bands that I make everyone I know listen to. Was super fun to listen to it as a whole album and not sure I appreciated the dichotomy of the bating beauties playing agressive punk!

Gotta be in contention for the most feminine album we’ve had so far This is a pretty fun one. Hadn’t really heard of them (though I’ve heard Heaven is a Place on Earth a million times and that’s the lead singer), but I think that very obvious feminine spin on what was previously an extremely male dominated industry is pretty cool. We Got the Beat is probably my pick on this one, just a catchy song. Vocals and instruments are more than passable I’m starting to realize I’m not super crazy about the 80s pop sound. There’s something that feels really shallow and unexciting if you didn’t grow up in that era. Nothing that this band does particularly wrong, but just more of a symptom of the years This is apparently the only album ever that reached #1 while being written and played by an all female band, so thats a pretty cool piece of history. Nothing personal about the album, but the genre is kinda tough for me to really enjoy

I’ve been searching for an album like this for ages. The musical diet I am fed by “the agreed canon” is very male focused, so its refreshing to get such a single heavy, uplifting new wave record that is also feminine. It’s astonishing that Beauty and the Beat is from 1981 as it sounds like acts that come from well after them. You have jangle pop guitars that I’d associate with acts from the mid-80s; harsher post-punk moments which add a nice bite to a wholesome overall production. Then, the thing that shines through this is the highly charged, overbright, overbold power pop which harkens back to the soul girl groups of a couple of decades earlier. It makes me feel so positive.

Sometimes it catches me off guard how credible the Go-Go's were as a post-punk band, just because I always remember how they're hitmakers. Easily one of the best pop albums of all time, and such an important precursor to all the indiepop I treasure most in this world.

It's hard to be remotely objective about an album that came out when you were 12 and you can remember exactly where you were and how you were feeling when you first heard many of the songs (e.g., I heard Our Lips are Sealed the first time on AM radio, waking up in the morning before junior high on a day when I was psyched because we were playing floor hockey in gym and, for a brief moment in time, I was somewhat adequate playing defense - I had the song in the back of my head the whole day, we won our game and I played great. Thus endeth my one positive memory of junior high). Short version: This may well just be a 4, but it's sure as shit getting 5 stars from me.

go girls, you sound fun!! but a bit generic... i kinda like how it sounds soundtrack-ish. unfortunely no track left a big impression on me other than recognising "we got the beat" from somewhere (nostalgic).

Listened to this while on a short lil digestion walk and was actually pleasantly surprised with the quality of work on this album. It has a really nice vibe to it and the early 80's vibe is quite prevalent throughout the whole project. Although it may not be a technical masterpiece or a boundary-pushing album for it's time I still found it to be rather enjoyable. 68/100.

Su sonido no es destructivo como las bandas posteriores de la misma naturaleza lo fueron, pero sí existe esa energía que busca romper el molde. Es un buen álbum, ligero de escucha, como para dejarlo puesto mientras realizas actividades intelectuales o físicas intensas.

For how close it is to a genre I enjoy hearing it really doesn't do it for me which is upsetting. It might just be that so many more modern projects have perfected this sound which may be why its fallen short for me. Like really short

good vibes, but not really my thing

The singles are good. Catchy and almost saccharine sweet vocals. But listening to the whole album for the first time today, I realize that the album is better. Obviously, when selecting the singles, they went with the nicest sounding tracks. But it's great listening to the whole album and getting the complete sound...the light, the dark, the in-between...all while maintaining that perfect balance of post-punk and pop. I didn't realize I needed this record so bad.

Ridiculously consistent and catchy little new-wave album here. It starts ethereal, with these shimmering reverb guitars driving the opener 'Our Lips Are Sealed'- it's honestly pretty subtle when compared to so many of the other songs here, with a super gorgeous bridge that doesn't go on for nearly long enough. But after that, the album starts blazing through with these insanely fast-paced power pop tracks, packed with catchy choruses with those oh-so iconic '80s harmonies. I mean, it's almost ABBA-esque in just how well they manage to craft these earwormy choruses on almost every single song. I especially loved the harmonies on 'How Much More'; a song where the guitar lead and overall groove remind me of 'Boys Don't Cry' by The Cure. There's also a handful of really memorable instrumental breakdowns here, be they synth-driven or guitar-driven. Best way to describe the guitars and bass here is "Nocturnal" - with these dark and brooding timbres and melodies sprouting out of seemingly nowhere, all without ever being too menacing or cold. Really just dark enough to establish a subtle gothic atmosphere that exists across the album, with some songs, like 'This Town', 'Lust To Love', and especially the dark synth melody and heavy fuzzy guitar of 'Automatic' standing out. It's no The Cure album, of course, far more subtle, but I do enjoy the occasionally darker tint here. You still get a song like 'We Got The Beat' which is about as straightforward as your new-wave bangers get, in a good way. And 'You Can't Walk In Your Sleep' is the most obviously post-punk track here, with a killer melodic bassline. I mentioned those sweet power-pop harmonies already, but the lead vocals done by Belinda carry their weight on a lot of the verses here, and they're pretty dynamic all things considered. There's a punk rawness to the delivery and vocal range here, with a shakiness that reminds me a bit of Kathleen Hannah, especially on the ridiculous 'Skidmarks on My Heart'. Just a really enjoyable 35 minutes. It does lose a bit of steam in its final songs, but that's just because the first half is just banger after banger. I can see the first four songs here especially becoming some future all-timer bops for me.

Really enjoyed how fun this album was. My favourite tracks were "Our Lips Are Sealed" and "Lust to Love", but there are many more on this album that I could put on and bop my head to. It's infectiously fun!

I absolutely love and adore The Go-Gos. This is my first time listening to a full album though, so I’m pleasantly surprised!

This probably isn’t a 4 but it is fun, energetic, short and the sun Is shining.

Standout: "This Town"

Okay, the elephant in the room... that unnecessary apostrophe. Makes me livid 🤬 Other than that, this is a decent album full of "bops", as young people seem to say. Not entirely sure what a "bop" is, but I think the word probably applies here. I believe the Go-Gos were big in America, but barely registered in the UK despite a big money push from their record company. We were all dressed in grey raincoats listening to Echo and the Bunnymen and Joy Division and reading Dostoyevsky at that point in time, so simple boppy tunes didn't break through our collective consciousness. Sounds good now though.

straight up forgot to rate this album and I just realised it. Omg its just more fucking 80's new wave. The singing is annoying and all the song spunds the same. Its just another 80's new wave album idk. Its very very close to a 2.

The drumming is aces, the whole band is tight, the surf punk girlband pop compositions are fantastic (the only band I can think of that can match them is the B-52s). It's one of those albums that when you hear it, you can hear its influence in music over the 40 years after. "Our Lips are Sealed" and "We Got the Beat" are easy 5 stars. I'm on the fence about most of the rest of the album. The other tunes aren't really at that level, so this is a 4.5/5 and one of those weird, yes on the list, but not a 5 star album albums.

Historical significance but thin as a record.

I didn't know what to expect here. Perhaps the proper way to word my previous sentence was that I had the wrong expectations going in. I expected a shallow-sounding pop but I was more than happy to find instrumental depth that mixes genres tastefully. The delivery is also pretty good and the runtime is practically perfect. Most of all, the album is consistent. Some songs do sound familiar and the lyrics are mostly one-dimensional but they serve the purpose of the record. I even found out that my two favorite songs aren't even the most famous ones. I liked "Tonite" and "Fading Fast".

Fun but not crazy about it, 6/10

Had no idea Belinda Carlisle was in a band. Regardless, this is a great new wave album. Solid from start to finish and We Got the Beat is a highlight.

(Light 7/10) Yeah it's pretty good! Fairly straightforward in style and execution. Obviously the standout tracks are "Our Lips are Sealed" and "We Got The Beat". The former is a super glossy little rock number with a great bass part and a very catchy hook. "We Got The Beat" is instantly recognizable and fun to rock along to. The rest of the album is pretty fair though. You've got a rather moody song with "This Town", alluding to the seedy nature of L.A. "Automatic" feels like something A Flock of Seagulls has written or would write (with a little DEVO in there for good measure). This record has one foot in late 70's new wave and one foot in what would develop into Pop Punk music. For me though, this sound is a bit too safe where I prefer my punk-adjacent pop music to be a bit more daring and raw.

Nostalgic, most of the songs were unfamiliar, but I enjoyed the pop.

Even though the Sex Pistols (and punk rock in general) had nothing to offer musically, the band inspired numerous other musicians to form their own bands. Attending the Sex Pistols’ concert in San Francisco in 1978 was what prompted Belinda Carlisle and Jane Wiedlin to pick up an instrument themselves and form a band. Three years later, Belinda Carlisle (vocals) and Jane Wiedlin (rhythm guitar), together with three fellow bandmates (Gina Schock – drums, Kathy Valentine – bass and Charlotte Caffey – lead guitar), released their debut album "Beauty and the Beat" as The Go-Go's, featuring a blend of pop, punk and new wave that was extremely contemporary for its time. Unlike Belinda Carlisle later on as a solo artist, The Go-Go's were less successful in Europe, so I’ve actually only listened to this album for the first time today. And that’s perhaps my problem: the momentum for this kind of music has passed. If you didn’t get to know and love them back then, it remains superficial and sounds just like countless other pop-oriented American new wave bands – perhaps even a touch more commercial than would have been good for it. The historical significance of the Go-Go's is, at least in the US, undisputed, but musically they simply offer well-crafted – and at times merely well-intentioned – new wave pop music.

Great power pop/new wave sound. Good songs, fun catchy. I like it. 4 Star

Good album, peppy and cool surf rock guitar licks. I think this is better than the Go Gos later albums

Not particularly compelling.

What a fun album. The surfer rock sound pairs so well with the up-beat party and teen relationship lyrical subjects. I genuinely don't have anything negative to say about anything presented on this one. I think it definitely deserves its spot on this list because this sound was pretty pioneering for this era. Basically Beach Boys but all-female. It's a little simple and pop-y which isn't a bad thing at all, not everything has to be math-rock or layered with subtleties and innuendo about drugs or emotion. Sometimes just creating some catchy fun sounds hits the mark. Also, kudos to the bass player Kathy Valentine, she carried over half of these songs. It's just good music. 8/10

This was fun!

This album was pretty fun. I don't know if it's the most important album of the 1980s to listen to - you can listen to the hits and have a good sense of this album - but it was a solid listen nonetheless. All the songs were pretty fun, nothing surprising, and nothing I'd cut. I will leave these comments, but also add that I read the Wikipedia entry for this album: this helped define the new-wave genre and demonstrated that punk and pop can go together (though i like this a lot more than the pop-punk of my youth ::shudder::). So historically, an important album. As someone who was born after this album came out, I just accepted the Go-gos as a "band of the 80s" rather than a band who helped shape what we think of as the music of the 80s. So that's cool!

I was surprised the Go-Go's even made the album. In the UK they're best known for co-writing Our Lips Are Sealed by the Fun Boy Three. OK The Go-Go's version isn't as good as Fun Boy 3's masterpiece and feels, unfairly, like 2020s indie band doing a cover for Stereogum. But I would have liked it as a cover so I also like it as a pre-cover. Oh Belinda Carlisle was in the band too. This albums better than her solo stuff. After listening to The Cars's dreadful debut a few months ago I was trepedatious at having to another American attempt at New Wave that didn't travel. But it's really good in a simillar vein to Tracey Ulman's album or Kirsty MacColl's debut but better executed.

Having Jane as a friend may make me biased, but I loved this album long before I met her. This is full of energy and fun and love and it is a great album! Maximum stars from me. ★★★★★

Second time for this one. Have to say I am impressed with the often menacing melodies embedded in the otherwise uber bubblegum poppiness of it all. I can see why they had their moment. But honestly, I think they’re better left in the crate. Someone could take some great samples from these songs. But listening to them all as a “work?” - Meh 3 Boolean: False

I kinda liked this. Catchy pop hits throughout. Okay, there are two duds in the middle (Automatically is particularly bad), but it’s a good effort. I’ve added most of this to my library and I would happily listen again.

It is a pretty solid album with a an overall good consistency in the songs and it has an enjoyable vibe and for some had some nostalgic tones. I enjoyed it more than i expected to be fair it was a pleasant suprise.

These songs fuck, like all of them. I love when the bass cuts through, the tone is super punchy. Every song has this drive that’s perfectly composed with the verse to choruses style. Belinda Carlisle’s voice is perfect, especially for these songs. Feels like a mix of rock, surf, punk, pop- that shit is special.

No idea who this 'Alex The Seal' guy is, but he has some very cool friends who make some very cool music. Really liked this one - combines new wave and punk into an interesting and cohesive aesthetic with very few misses in the tracklist. High-energy, bombastic, and memorable. A great find. day 2 i enjoyed the vibrancy of this album, which served as nice background noise while i went about my evening routine. not a bad listen, though its beginning (specifically, the first two songs) is a comparative weak point to the rest of the track list. ♡: "lust to love"

Cool band with a recognisable hit on this album. My wife was singing along. Not sure I'd listen to more of them.

たぶんこのアルバムを聴くのは初めてだけれど、ヒットした最初の曲は知っていた。 この曲以外の曲も全て丁寧に作られていて、好感が持てる。 おそらくは今の世代にも通じるのではないだろうか。 当時も少し懐かしく感じるアレンジやキャッチーなフックにメランコリックな曲も最後まで飽きさせない。 あっけらかんとした所が魅力的ですね。

This is #day696 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… I didn't know Belinda Carlisle was in a band. I hadn't really heard of this band until today either. What a shame. This is a great new wave/pop record, on par with Blondie and The B-52's. "Automatic" is a personal highlight among many others. I wonder if Automatic, an LA indie rock/post punk band took a name from that song. Anyway, great find. This is a 4 out of 5. Looking forward to #day697.

Cute, fun, and catchy!

Pretty fun pop-rock sound. Listened to it twice through and it does start to get a bit grating after the second listen but it's catchy in parts and full of positive energy.

Nothing revelatory but enjoyable 80s pop, Lust to Love best song

I knew the songs on this album that everybody knows, but this is the first time I’ve ever listened to an entire album by the Go-Go’s. I thought it was fine. Inoffensive. Honestly, at times I forgot it was playing.

Exactly what you expect from a new wave album. Light and fun, but still inspired by that punk rock energy.

Btw, I didn't know Carlisle was in a band before her solo career. Now I can't unhear it. Overall I got the impression that the singles got waaaay more care than the rest of the record. I don't know, the record isn't bad, but it was a bit of a bore. Didn't like it all that much.

I almost gave it two stars, because I know it was a whole thing in 81, but I just really fucking hate this and couldn’t listen to the whole album. I get it, it’s catchy, it’s female “punk” that is also pop, the harmonies work... but I just really fucking hate it and something about the timber in the vocals just puts me off. Sometimes music surprises me by how fresh it can sound after decades and decades, but this just sounds like a relic of the early 80s in the worst way possible.
