Album Summary

Stankonia is the fourth studio album by American hip hop duo OutKast. It was released on October 31, 2000, by LaFace Records. The album was recorded in the duo's recently purchased Atlanta recording facility Stankonia Studios, which allowed for fewer time and recording constraints, and featured production work from Earthtone III (a production team consisting of Outkast and Mr. DJ) and Organized Noize. For the follow-up to their 1998 album Aquemini, the duo worked to create an expansive and experimental musical aesthetic, incorporating a diverse array of styles including funk, rave music, psychedelia, gospel, and rock within a Dirty South-oriented hip hop context. During the recording sessions, André 3000 began moving beyond traditional rapping in favor of a more melodic vocal style, an approach to which Big Boi and several other producers were initially unaccustomed. Lyrically, the duo touched upon a wide range of subject matter, including sexuality, politics, misogyny, African-American culture, parenthood, and introspection. Stankonia featured appearances from a variety of local musicians discovered by the group while they were visiting clubs in their native city of Atlanta, Georgia. Stankonia received universal acclaim from music critics upon its release, and has since been regarded by many to be one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart, selling over 530,000 copies the first week. It produced three singles: "B.O.B", "Ms. Jackson", and "So Fresh, So Clean"; "Ms. Jackson" became the group's first single to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100. At the 2001 Grammy Awards, OutKast won Best Rap Album for Stankonia and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for "Ms. Jackson". In 2003, the album was ranked number 359 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, 361 in a 2012 revision, and 64 in a 2020 reboot of the list. A re-issue of the album for its 20th anniversary with previously unreleased remixes was released on October 30, 2020.

B.o.B reminds me of middle school dances and everyone learning this line dance (assumedly created by the whites). Cons: bloated length & skits

Having finally listened to a complete album by OutKast, I actually kind of dislike the reputation they have earned through Ms. Jackson. The song is a complete outlier, being upbeat and family friendly. And while it comes as no surprise that a song like that would be the most popular, I feel like it distracts from the fact that OutKast are a serious rap crew in the mind of most people. The album is rated for good reason, containing excellently produced pieces and fairly standard lyrics for the genre, although they are performed fantastically. Best songs are B.O.B and Gasoline Dreams. 8/10, better than its reputation.

Absolutely not. There's a real difference between the playful sexually-charged lyrics of "Hey Ya!" and this album's "Snappin' and Trappin'" which implore that a girl should "...gobble up jism like school lunches...need her to take cat beatings and throat punches." I stopped listening at that point.

I give zero fucks. this is sort of ok as far as hippy hoppy goes. mrs jackson is ok. still giving one star cos 1001 is shit.

I didn’t like this as much as I thought I would. Just dragged on a lot. Many bangers but with a 24 song album I guess it can’t all be good? I’d like a shorter OutKast album more

The album was great until it wasn’t. I respect the risks that were taken production wise, but a lot a lot of the ideas feel like throwouts to me. When the album hit, it hit. André 3000 and big boy are so unique. I don’t think I can give it a four though.

I liked it. Not all of it tho. Some of it was kinda blarble mcdarble farble, so for that reason I give it a 4. If it wasn’t that way, it would get a 5

Really great album and a good break from the west coast rap. I love how musical Andre’s voice is even when he’s not quite singing

I actually liked a couple of tracks. 2.78

This is a landmark album. The most vivid example of the hip hop's transition between streety and enigmatic 90s and bright and fashionable 00s. Super cool

The only positive thing about this album is that it has finally ended

Ms. Jackson is better than any other song on this album. I think this opinion might be biased because I've heard this on YouTube a lot, but nonetheless cool as heck.

I like Hey Ya! so thought I might enjoy this but turns out I've been duped 🙁

No, sorry. No, no. An outkast album but not the one with Hey Ya on it? "Oh well I'm pleased to see it has Ms Jackson on it" I think as the title pops up and I vaguely remember liking the chorus of that one as a kid. No no NO in the cold light of an adult ear I did not in fact like it. (OK, the chorus still bangs a little).

Really cool. 60's Michael Bublé was smooth af.

Some real classic-ass classic rock. Not really my jam though.

This was all over the place. Liked the rhythms. Some of the lyrics were too vulgar for my taste. The Tisha song caught me off guard, but I was really moved and saddened by it. I liked the wordplay in many of the songs.

I’m a huge fan of OutKast and I was thrilled to get this album today.

Shaun really loves this album but it doesn't hit for me in the same way. I don't really ever find myself wanting to come back to it compared to other hip hop albums.

The hits are great, but man the interludes kill multiple listens as they did to many albums from this era

Could’ve benefitted from some editing down, but overall good with two all time classics

Very good album. So fun, very well produced.

real niggas

Did not groove with the music as it had unfamiliar structure and meaningless lyrics

A truck load of influence. Jazz, R’n’B, blues, punk, rop. Not my style also this one… but damn

Very cool but a tad too long

I think this is overrated? But yes, I know, the hits! But yes, I know, the varied and lush production! But yes, I know, the undeniable influence on later artists (Kanye, Frank)! And yet...it's overly long...it's overly horny...and the too-many skits aren't that funny. Sb/TLB is their true masterpiece, probably.

Another rap album gets a three but once again I worry that if I listened more closely I might end up marking it lower.

I had a mate at college who used to rave about these guys and Missy Elliott. I went to a house party at his once and drank too much, passed out in their garden then woke up and was sick indoors. Unsurprisingly I didn't get invited back. I knew the singles, and they set a high bar for the rest of the album. I was getting Run The Jewels vibes from one of the tracks then Killer Mike showed up and featured on another track which felt pretty fitting. The production overall was good, it was a bit long though and I could have done without the skits/interludes.

SNAPPIN' AND TRAPPIN' is a perfect encapsulation of the Outkast magic. Catchy, unique sounds, straight out of outer space. Toss in Killer Mike (they're always on point with any of their collabs). 1): ATLiens 2): Stankonia 3): Speakerboxxx/The Love Below

I'm sorry Miss Jackson, this album is very goodddd

OutKast is now, by definition, dropping on the day before I go on holiday. The day before we left for our summer trip, I got the Speakerboxxx/The Love Below album, and today I get this one. Tomorrow we leave for an autumn trip, so I will probably need to pause for a few days. To be honest, I did not finish this album as I was too busy, and I really did not like what I heard. The interludes got a bit irritating after a while as well. Although I could bring up some respect for that previous album I got, this one really does nothing for me, as it is just way too far out of my league. So, my apologies to the hip-hop fans.

Consistently my favourite Outkast record simply due to the variety on here. There's so many cool but vasrly different treacka on the thing it's insane frankly.

Decent album. Some well known songs on here (So Fresh So Clean, Ms. Jackson, BoB). Spaghetti Junction and Mumble were new ones for me. Like that it doesn't take itself too serious. Surprised to see Killer Mike on the album too. Listenable and re-listenable.

Couple of classics from my youth here, but I'm still pretty solidly in the "just not really a big Outkast fan" club.

Changed the game love the melodic style, not the biggest fan of interlude Bangers probably my fave rap album

Incredible album. Full of the adventurous, playfulness we know from this duo, but pushed even further. Owing a tremendous gratitude to the psych and funk of the 60s and 70s, all blended in with rock and R&B and modern/futuristic hip-hop, and great bars from both Andre and Big Boi, this album comes out at full speed and never lets up. It probably runs a little long, as so many records do from this time period, but it's a small nitpick. Truly classic and timeless.

Another decent rap album brought down by length

I'm rounding up on this one. This is a great representation of the south, it's very 2000s coded and the feel and the energy and the power that is felt in the lyrics and the production of this album is very noticeable and recognizable. It's extremely unique in it's placement on this list and for that reason it could be a 5/5. There will not be another album like this one on this list. The South's greatest rap representatives (in my humble opinion) pack some extremely rough and tough tracks alongside some very though provoking burners and some of the catchiest pop rap tracks ever made. I think that recognition is owed to this and I don't see anything other than a 4 or 5. For me it's somewhere between a 8.5 - 9.5 based on how I'm feeling that day, but it is super deserving to be on this list. I'm rounding up

A couple of big tunes and then it goes on and on and on for Too long

Some good moments, but waaaay too overblown with junk

Outkast are great, this album of theirs has highlights, but overall it's their weakest album for me.

ya i liked it

Spaghetti junction va steezy Digge at d e så mange interludes Beste sang: Mrs Jackson (duh)

Such a good fricking hip hop/rap album, i really do like outkast and my favourite song from this album is so fresh so clean.

This is a very fun album. Once I had "So fresh, so clean" stuck in my head so bad that I started writing it on my shoes. Now it's on the front of the shoes forever, even though you can barely see it. My friend will always remind me of this...

Hard to rate - OK technically and energetically, but lyrically fustrsting in places.

I mean THIS is hip hop. Hell yes

Hmmm...not really

Went on a bit too long

Even though rap isn't always my thing, I would listen again. Really a whole lot going on in this record artistically and I respect it

You need to imagine Big Boi flying spread-eagled in the sky while 3 Stacks is positively down to earth for this album to make sense.

Is it cliche to say this is the best OutKast Album? Yes. Is it still true? Also Yes.

First time hearing a full Outkast album. Unfortunately for Stankonia, I knew all of my favorite songs on that album. Does it make it a bad album? No. It’s a middle of the road for me. Too many interludes! 3/5. Intro: 2 Gasoline Dreams (featuring Khujo): 3 I'm Cool (Interlude): 2 So Fresh, So Clean: 5 Ms. Jackson: 5 Snappin' & Trappin': 3 D.F. (Interlude): 2 Spaghetti Junction: 3.5 Kim & Cookie (Interlude): 2 I'll Call Before I Come: 3,5 B.O.B: 5 Xplosion: 3 Good Hair (Interlude): 2 We Luv Deez Hoez: 3 Humble Mumble: 3 Drinkin' Again (Interlude): 2 ?: 3 Red Velvet: 3 Cruisin' in the ATL (Interlude): 2 Gangsta Shit: 3 Toilet Tisha: 3 Slum Beautiful: 3 Pre-Nump (Interlude) (Interlude): 2 Stankonia (Stanklove): 3

I tried to listen to it objectively but I don't like rap very much.

I was not super familiar with OutKast outside of their singles but this was such a fun way to start off the week. Easy 5 for me, probably a future re-listen to when I need a jolt of energy.

Just not a fan of Hip/Hop. I think it pretty much all sounds the same. The beat remains repetitive. The language is often foul. Nope, just not a fan. At least the interludes added a little difference to the album. No, I'm not saying it was an improvement, just that it was different. I thought that the album was long with its 24 selections of songs and interludes.

More interesting than most hip hop albums but far too long.

A few years ago, a friend recommended I deep dive into Outkast's back catalogue. I remember liking some of this but finding it way too long considering its 70+ minute run time and the excessive interludes. I still hold those opinions, but they've softened a fair bit since last I listened to this album around 3 years ago. The main things I noticed is just how un-hip hop this hip-hop album is. For one, most of the instrumentals are heavily R&B influenced, and if not for Andre 3000's rambling rapping, they might have been confused for sparse soul instrumentals. There's also the poppy side of the album - most of the best choruses on Stankonia are sung, with melodies that, once again, draw heavily from R&B (you can hear it on "So Fresh, So Clean" and "Ill Call B4 I Cum," for instance.) This is a 2000s rap album, so the R&B in question is not the gentlemanly fare you're expecting: this is a fairly racy, debauched album when you consider the main themes of most songs along with the spoken skits in between them. Andre 3000 gives some stand-out performances here - his rapping is hard to wrap your head around at first since he almost sounds like he's just talking around half the time. On high-octane songs like "B.O.B." though, you really do hear how perfectly he fits in the pocket, the gaps in the instrumental. That said, I found this album too long for its own good. It's a sign of the era it came out in, when everyone was putting out albums that sought to fill as much of the 80 minutes available on a CD as possible. There's an absolutely killer 45 to 50 minute album here, but you have to sift through a lot of samey songs to find it. That sort of detracted from my enjoyment of what was otherwise a very lively, well-crafted, and memorable document of 2000s Southern hip hop, released just before the bling took over. Key Tracks: So Fresh So Clean, Ms. Jackson, I'll Call B4 I Cum, B.O.B., Humble Mumble

Greatest hip-hop duo of all time. The South got somethin' to say!

Ihme hassuttelulevy. Oinky sploinky biitit ja höpsöjä interludeja hölmöjen biisien välissä. Hittibiisit jepis, muuten vähä pläh.

When they don’t hit, they *massively* miss. A matter of endurance.

Is alright

Rides the line between fun and serious very well. 4.5/5

I am from Atlanta, I am obliged by birth to give this album five stars. Helps this is one of the greatest rap albums of all time.

Ms Jackson was good but the rest was forgettable with some interesting beats in there.

Not one for me.

Hey mamas🙂‍↕️#MascPotential

tas moments, kad ir so fresh, so clean un ms. jackson b2b ir loti forsh, bet pārējais albums mid imo

I do like this band, I swear, but like Speakerboxx, so much chaff. A handful of all time bangers and just a heap of silliness in between. B.O.B. tho

It was fine.

- liked So Fresh, So Clean and Ms. Jackson… gotta love the classics - the only song I really loved on the album was B. O. B. Bombs Over Baghdad - otherwise I didn’t love the album, it’s super long, lots of swearing, etc.

good album but too long and a bit repetitive

Pretty good and interesting rap album, it includes a large variety of styles and influences that keeps songs fresh throughout the entire album. 3.65/5 its good but runs a little long

A certified rap classic. I finally listened to this thing all the way through. I'm pretty sure I heard the beginning once or twice. I've also heard Ms Jackson plenty of times and I gotta say its nice I can hold off good albums like this so I can enjoy the first time listens. Its very well made and despite its length, it meshes very well together. Only one or two tracks I didn't really like.

Some good stuff on here but too many songs thins out the quality.

Not my genre (just gave Jay-Z 1/5), but quite a banger nevertheless.

Fav OutKast album. So many bangers and great skits. BREAK

A couple of great earworms on here but the rest is pretty generic hip-hop.

Some AMAZING songs and some great songs, but it's a little long for me and I wasn't sold on some other songs. Still though, the highlights are songs that I'll be returning to for a while

Not for me - just nothing I really enjoyed

Okay album, I got a lot of respect for the impact of OutKast. Some good songs and some pretty forgettable ones. Lots of weirdly raunchy and uncomfortable interludes and sounds like they had in their last album on the list. Main complaint is that it's just too long

I was gonna give it a 4 because it's too long and has too many skits and songs but fuck... it made me move, it made me think, it made me glad to be alive for those 78 or so minutes. Not their best but who is better than Outkast?

I'm learning I just am not really into Outkast or Atlanta rap. Not that it's bad, it's just not really my thing. It's got the silly Gorillaz Plastic Beach type stuff going on that I would normally be into, but for some reason it just doesn't click outside the context of Plastic Beach. Way too many interludes, along with a lot of the tracks being very repetitive and wear out their welcome for me. Fine album, but yeah, just not for me. Far prefer East Coast/Jazz/Soul/Alternative rap over Atlanta/Southern rap.

Its not a stretch to say that this redefined modern rap. The missing link between 90s rap and the new gen. Incredible.

Nice variety.

A long way from what I normally listen too, but it's cool in small doses.

5 Remember enjoying this well enoughwhen I was in more of a hip hop phase 10 or so years ago, but its actually so much better than I remember. So many great songs here, b.o.b most of all

Enjoyed it. First time listener to this album. Probably needs a few more listens but enjoyed it

Probably my favorite, very nostalgic for me but something I appreciate more every time I listen.

Stankonia OutKast 2000 Genres: Hip Hop Styles: Gangsta, P Funk, Crunk, Conscious, Pop Rap 1. 4. 10. I'll Call Before I Come (feat. 14. We Luv Deez Hoez (feat. 19. Cruisin' in the ATL (interlude) (★☆☆☆☆) -Contexto: Viñeta sonora de estar manejando por Atlanta, funciona como respiro atmosférico antes de Gangsta Shit. 20. Gangsta Shit (feat.
