I remember the song "Connected". It's pretty good. I didn't know the rest of the album, and it all sounded kind of same'y to me.

Probably on the low side of 3 stars, but despite its dated dopiness, it’s hard to find much to truly dislike.

That super dated late 90s/early 2000s sound of throwing all the spaghetti at the wall: dj scratching, rapping, gospel style singing, electronic beats, weird samples - and more! Even if somehow this didn’t sound like it came out of a time capsule, I’m not sure it would be good.

This is, in every sense, a product of its time. The mushrooms and assorted greenery on the cover might conjure up psychedelic sounds, but don’t jump to conclusions. In reality, the first thing that comes to mind while listening is an English office worker in the 90s, riding the tube on a Monday morning and playing this record to perk up — without triggering an overwhelming surge of dopamine. The music bears a resemblance to the nascent Britpop scene — it’s energetic and urban, though notably lacking in guitars. Instead, it’s packed with pleasing basslines, layered female backing vocals, and occasional exotic touches like the saxophone and flute. They didn’t bother with the hassle of clearing samples; everything was recorded live. The vocal delivery isn’t quite rap — it’s more of a spoken-word recitation, a style that would later be echoed by The Streets. It’s an album that hasn’t aged particularly well and leans a bit toward the monotonous, but it’s not bad at all.

Solid sound surprisingly good

Well, here we have (for the 327th time) a British electronica/pop artist from the late '80s/early '90s. Yawn. This was actually somewhat pleasant to have on in the background, though.

Look, its perfectly OK for what it is/was at the time. I'm not going to rubbish it but it's time capsuled junkfood. Did the job back in it's day but I'm not storing it for later use. Nothing is blowing me away, no suprises here, no trend setting, not influential to others because they were derivative themselves. They didn't do a bad job, they just ain't changing what I already listen to.

Well done, but nothing outstanding

Very groovy and I was surprised. The songs individually were a little bit repetitive for me, but the music made me feel good, especially 'Connected'.

Still not quite sure about this one one I've listened to a few times I maybe need a few more listens, I've enjoyed listening it's a good one to just chuck on and chill but it never really reaches any heights its just a consistently ok album nothing really stands out but it's nice to listen to do I'm still unsure how I actually feel about it I can't fault what's hear but never really excites me the music is solid I like the beats sometimes I get a massive attack feel but it never gets to those heights still worth a listen though

This one doesn’t make sense on the list. A couple electronic hip hop mildly successful hits doesn’t make it a must listen before the grim reaper comes for you. That said, perfectly pleasant

An hour of corny madchester electro-house type shit. Fuckin' kill me. Ok, so as time went on, I felt less like dying. It's inoffensive, dated, still corny, but like so much madchester stuff at least it's earnest, which goes a long way to building some goodwill towards the other embarrassing presentation. I never want to listen to this again but I don't hate it.

Sometimes the nature of this project is just that you have to listen to some guys spin an hour out of ~20 minutes of actual material which you honestly didn’t find that interesting in the first place

Madchester 90s vibes all up in the area. Unfortunately despite today’s fashion going back to baggy trousers and oversized t shirts, this sounds pretty dated nowadays and the lack of variety and creativity drags it down

I was totally obsessed with Stereo MC's as a young teen, in fact I can still almost quote Connected word for word as I edge closer and closer to 50. The British trip-hop outfit blended house made drum loops with seriously catchy grooves to makes something unlike anything else on the market. The unique output earned them a Brit Award for Best British Album and landed them remix duties for the likes of The Jungle Brothers, Tricky, and Madonna. The previously mentioned Connected was an international hit, charting in over a dozen countries. Three other tracks were UK hits, all charting within the top 20. Strangely enough it would be close to a decade before the Stereo MC's would release a follow up to Connected. I think that the lack of a sonic sequel is something that helps the record stand out as something truly special from the era of the early 90s. And while nothing comes close to touching the title track, there's zero filler to be found on what has to be called an all killer album.

Very of its time, I swear that one drum loop is in every electronic song from the 90’s. Not bad though

Fun album love the vibe especially while out driving! Wouldn’t always want to listen but they are important to that era of music!

Been waiting for something like this to come along as I wasn’t expecting electronic music to really be featured on this list. I don’t really have time for a proper review right now but this was very enjoyable. Favourite songs are Connected and Step It Up.

Awesome album, but they shot themselves in the foot by putting the best song up front. Or maybe it's only the best because we've heard it the most. It's the musical equivalent of showing up to a potluck with the world's greatest casserole. There are plenty of good songs here. I think this album got shorted and deserved more radio play the first time around. My Rating: 4/5 nodes

Not really my genre, but I did enjoy this alright. Three stars.

Poorly aged 90's electro-pop

Man, this sounds dated. But I remember it coming out and it kinda felt that way then too. Madchester had taken over Brit rap and the beats and loops sounded old even then. Has some bangers on it, but I can think of a dozen albums I'd rather listen to than this from the genre and era.

I’m pretty sure I heard this before, I think one of my roommates in the dorms in college had this. If I haven’t heard it I’ve at least heard all the songs on it before. The singles from this were played a lot when I was in high school and I remember hearing this a lot my first year of college, but it’s been at least since 1997 that I’ve heard any of it. I overall like this type of electronica in the trip hop / trance style, though with the early 90s production the beats are a little weak sounding compared to what was going on in the late 90s; I think it was partly a choice in styles and partly an aversion by producers to having much low end. It’s a fun record and the singles are all great, but half of the deep cuts are forgettable and it drags on some because of that.

Interesting pop representation, Not way up the charts, but a fun interlude with some throwback flavor.

I knew the name, but scanning my me.lry banks I couldn't land on which of the many one hit wonders of the 90s these guys did. It is revealed on Track 1. It's a song I never liked, and was the only song worth hearing on the album until Track 7, which everybody also knows. And which I also never liked.

Repetitive, lazy, super dated. This may be one of the most uncreative albums I've ever heard. At the same time, I get why people liked it when it came out. In 1992 this may have sounded new and groundbreaking but it's still boring, especially listening now 34 years later. 1.75/5

Love the title track and the rest sounds more or less the same. Makes a pretty fun album without a lot of substance, very repetitive within every song and across the whole thing. Raps are sometimes as hollow as Euro Dance from sounds the same time. Would've profited from cutting a few tracks and some bars from each song.

With 13 tracks, most of which clock in at four minutes and up, and an overall running time of close to an hour, this really could have dragged, but fortunately did not, which is a credit to the group’s sound. That said, there is an overall sameness of sound/rhythm from track to track, which, while unifying, is ultimately limiting, and keeps this out of five star territory for me.

Compared to the last entry by The Shamen, this is headed in a direction that I find more enjoyable. Maybe just a touch more funky, a touch more variety across tracks. I believe I detected notes of The Brand New Heavies, which I enjoy very much.

Really making me listen to two British guys rap this week. This is pretty well-done for what it is. I'm surprised I recognized the first song. The rest of the album was decent and well-produced. It feels influential for pop and hip hop. I'll never put something like this on by choice though. It feels a bit empty and dated overall.

simple and shallow but super catchy and weirdly magnetic. great energy. leans closer to forza soundscape than anything. i don't know that it's special but it's definitely a good time. favorite song is maybe Fade Away, but not by much. strong 3

Rating: 6/10 It's not bad for what it is, that being a product of its time, it's an electronic hip hop album with this clear UK turn of the 90's style to it. It's surprisingly not really goofy or cheesy as I was expecting. It's got funky and dancey grooves that are pretty enjoyable and also a really chill element to it. It did feel a bit hypnotic when you just let it take over you. All around I liked it but it was also too long, which were felt in the track lengths, and there weren't too many great songs. My favorites were Connected, Ground Level, and Step it Up

Something I owned in my youth - every track was familiar and still stands up after all these years. I couldn't explain why I like this so much but I was really happy oy come across it again

Not particularly fond of Hip-Hop, or UK bands, and yet this quirky fusion of genres found a way into my heart.

Boring and non essential

I love Blur and Jamiroquai and Brit rap and having fun!!! And i certainly felt alive and had fun

i found myself completely incapable of vibing with this album for some reason. idk, all the songs just felt kinda like hollow somehow, i think something about the vocals were just so dull and did absolutely nothing for me. and the length of it really didn't help. honestly would've questioned if it was ai-generated had i just encountered some of these songs in the wild favourite songs: ehhhhhh least favourite song: none in particular

I was familiar with the title track - great tune - the rest is alright, I guess I kinda knew Step It Up too. Good beats, but nothing really notable about the is album. Then I realized it’s another one of those “Brit bias” picks. (3)

Die britische Formation um Rob Birch und Nick Hallam nahm ihr drittes Album in den Workhouse Studios in London auf, veröffentlicht 1992 über das eigene Label Gee Street, in Zusammenarbeit mit 4th & Broadway und Island Records. Ich höre in "Connected" eine Band, die sich zwischen Acid Jazz und Trip-Hop nicht entscheiden will – und genau daraus zieht das Album seinen Reiz. Was mich am meisten überrascht: Wie roh das Ganze trotz des Studiobudgets klingt. "Ground Level" schleppt sich fast bewusst, während "Step It Up" mit seinen Bläsern regelrecht drängt. Der Titeltrack bleibt der Anker – nicht weil er der beste Song ist, sondern weil er das Prinzip des Albums am klarsten zeigt: Soul-Gesang gegen kantige Beats, nie ganz im Gleichgewicht. "Creation" wirkt dagegen fast improvisiert, was ihm guttut. Ob "Connected" heute noch genauso trägt wie 1992, lässt sich schwer sagen – aber als Dokument einer Band, die HipHop und Clubmusik ohne Berührungsängste zusammendachte, hält es sich gut.

Ground Level

This was actually fine. I knew the big hits, and I kinda liked them, even though I probably didn't when I first heard them (and "Connected" has been used in those ads, but even so, it's not a bad tune).

Love the song Connected. The rest- not so much.

White boy rap combined with Madchester indie/dance. Somehow produced two massive hits. Quite enjoyable but hard to take seriously.

I had a nice time.

Not sure what this is doing on this list tbh BUT I was a huge fan of their singles back when this came out and was always pulling for them, even if the similar group I didn’t yet know I would like was far better at this whole idea (Massive Attack, just more downbeat). I saw them twice opening for U2 of all bands at huge stadiums in Germany, just completely lost in a mass of 60,000+ Bono fans. They were dressed entirely in jean outfits and yet I still pulled for them. They had dance routines and back-up dancers and still, I pulled for them. Couple of white dudes from the UK who wanted to be Black MCs more than anything? Still I pulled for them and in some respects felt like this was the future. The song Connected makes all of my top 100/favourite songs of all time playlists. Every time. I’m not sure I’ve ever heard the rest of the album aside from Step it Up. Which is also quite good! Maybe not Connected or Elevate My Mind level, but still right on.

**An ok album

Ehhhh, it's like so booorrrring.... Like, seriously, I kept forgetting to actively listen to it because every song was just there with nothing too special happening. If I was making a documentary about the 90's I'd absolutely include this as background music to a bunch of scenes. There wasn't anything horrible about it, but it also wasn't good.

Good beats and hooks on this. The songs generally tend to be longer than they need to be, so they can end up feeling a bit annoying. Connected is a standout track, and the others are all nice enough.

Quite like this. English accent hip hop sounds quite quaint. Connected is a good track and the album is pretty consistently at this standard.

This sounded very dated but it was still an enjoyable listen. Some very solid singles and nothing particularly bad to say comes to mind with this. A solid 3.

I’ve heard a fair number of these songs before. I enjoyed it much more than I thoughts would when I first saw the title and artwork. But I don’t think realistically I’ll be coming back to it.

If you take all the best bits of pop, electronic and hip hop and mix them up you get Gorillaz. If you scrape up whatever shit is left you get Stereo MCs.

- I am probably rating this too high, because this album really has no business on this list...I just rated a Miles Davis album 3 stars and doing the same here is maybe the biggest insult that jazz genius ever received. But sometimes you just find yourself bopping along comfortably to basic bitch, early 90s British hip-hop and you just keep yourself from asking too many questions. - This is not groundbreaking hip-hop...in fact, if Birch was American, his bars would basically be Vanilla Ice. (Rhyming "To the right" and "It's all right" in one of your singles biggest hooks is audaciously and hilariously lazy songwriting.) But sometimes you just want milk. - Back-up vocalists are nice. The two best tracks are definitely "All Night Long" and "Chicken Shake." Are those the two tracks with no rapping on them? Yes. No more questions.

I find a lot of albums mid, but some of the tracks here just hurt my ears

wait this is a vibe

Can something sound dated in a good way? This question comes to mind when bumping the grooves of Stereo MC's Connected. It is jazzy, throughly english hip hop record that is enjoyable if slightly one dimensional. Is it trip hop? is it "acid jazz"? I am not sure. The rhymes are not particularly affecting but the beats sound really good. 1992 is the year of The Chronic, The Predator, Don't Sweat the Technique, etc. so in that way, this sound already seems left in the dust but it has a great vibe.

Knew their one hit but not their other stuff. Not really crazy seeing as they are mostly a one hit wonder. It's all fine. Bit of the Madchester vibe here. Doesn't really do much to stand out from the crowd but they made a nice and cheery album with a cheery cover. Not all that memorable, but what really can be 900+ albums in. I do really really like Connected the song though.

Strong nostalgia, came out the year I graduated from high school. Not overwhelming but I'm not sure I understand the hate here, I think it is reasonably nice to listen to.

Very simplistic music meant to be popular and fun. Like Disney.
