I don’t like these vocals, very frustrating
Danceable music about dark subject matters, what else do you expect from the founding fathers of goth rock.
I was listening to this and I tythat this was different from Bela Luigosi’s Dead. It seems toned down a bit but not as goth as the first. I listened to the first album to compare the two. The first album is way better but this is just as good but in a different way. It’s more musical I think.
A little bit different from what I expected as someone whose only exposure to Bauhaus has been "Bela Lugosi Is Dead". A lot more high-energy and distinctly 'New Wavey'. The trademark fuzzy guitar and dark themes are still there though. I personally found myself gravitating the most to the spooky and experimental songs. The bonus tracks especially stood out to me. Fav Tracks: "Of Lilies and Remains", "In Fear of Fear" and "The Man with X-Ray Eyes".
Nope
Kinda really bad
goth? yeah creepy sounding very first track so that's interesting? Second song: don't like the voice at all. This sucks lol. I can't focus on my work, so I might have to come back to this shit. ok i'm back to finish the damn thing. Definitely not for me. Might have to skip a few songs here & there. Yeah, so far I've not listened to many songs in full. Probably like 4/? Conclusion: this type of music is not for me, but if that's your thing, that's cool too. The dude's voice is driving me nuts. And every time I think a track is going to redeem it for me, I'm proven wrong as soon as the guy opens his mouth. The final track, Satori, is the actual redeeming track because it's instrumental. 1 star
Not a bad album, I think I could relisten if I was especially angsty
Love Murphy's voice. These songs didn't hit for me, but solid.
That’s my shit
Guess probs for being original and not terrible. But not really for me.
I'm in deep with this girl, but she's out of her mind She said "Babe, I'm sorry, but I'm crazy tonight" She got a black shirt, black skirt, and Bauhaus stuck in her head Yup, the extent of my Bauhaus knowledge is from a Blink 182 song. Was excited to finally hear why this crazy lady loves Bauhaus so much…and was totally let down. 2/5
Fun and atmospheric record for spooky season. Curious to hear more from this band. This was my first opportunity to dig into one of their albums. Also, Day 200 for me! Coming back to give this a 4. Delightful and growing on me.
Yeah it’s alright, neat instrumentals but i dont care much for the lyrical style. Standouts are The Passion of Lovers, Kick In The Eye 2, In Fear Of Fear and Earwax.
Yeah its alright - i was very with it at first, but it trailed off at the end, very much more Dada then Bauhaus by that point, eh? :P (*having reached the pinnacle of unnecessarily wanky comments, I am summarily taken out back to meet a bolt gun*)
Awful
I like some Bauhaus but this was s just dreary
# Album Name: Mask # Artist: Bauhaus # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Not very good. # Top Tunes: # Would I listen to it again? No
Pretty lame!
Confused in confidence. It’s like if Neil from The Young Ones formed a band.
Industrial joy division? I'm pretty sure I've been to a club that played this.
Unsettling, but at least it has some "coherence"... Yeah, overall, there is no saving this album...
second half really sucked actually
Some of the songs were cool, but some of them kind of didn't gel with it. So overall the album didn't flow so well.
It was fine - a little weird here and there but mostly mellow rock
J'avais entendu le nom mille fois mais jamais écouté. Un autre album qui permet de tenir le coup et écouter 7-8 albums pas bons avant la prochaine belle découverte.
enjoyed it more than i thought i would, really loved 'kick in the eye' and 'mask'
Not as dark and gloomy as I expected from these Goth legends, but the melodies don't stick and it feels kind of airless and manic but not in a good way. Still, some of it is compelling and always interesting. I liked the second half better but was hoping for more from this one.
First time listening to Bauhaus. Strong Joy Division DNA but you can hear lots of influences i think, from dub to late 70s Talking Heads. It's much tighter, almost claustrophobic in the first half then it goes off the rails a bit on the second, but the whole thing is a fun ride
Happy, smiling, sunny morning mmm. Just not in the mood and you need to be in the mood for this, which isn’t fair on the record. This is a good record a dark moody link between art house Bowie and Iggy Berlin sounds and full blown goth and later music. So while I didn’t actually enjoy today, did like and appreciated. 3 Star
Second try at this one. New Wave sucks. 80s music is the worst. Gothic Rock...another genre I can confirm I am not a fan of. This is like a creepier Cure. Maybe the best thing that can be said about this album is that it was not long.
Yuck
started out okay but got iffy, and in the end i skipped through the last 6ish songs and didn’t like any of them
Dissapointing considering their legend. All a bit bleak and one dimensional. 'Passion for lovers' is a standout.
This record has the kind of production where the producers thought the band sounded like shit. It is absolutely smothered in reverb and the vocals are buried in the mix, the kinds of things that you do if you want to hide a bad performance even if the end result is a muddy mess. It absolutely has a vibe though.
Weird one. Glad I listened, not sure I'll listen again! 5/10
Sadly, they are a British band and they produce something called Gothic Rock which is total shite. Can anything good come out of Northampton? Apparently not. It's all a load of cobblers!
F*ck this, why is this on the list zero stars
This is a really dancy and atmospheric album but it is pretty samy
6/10 Buen album, no me aburrió pero tampoco es wow
Perfect timing to get this album; the weather is getting colder and October draws nearer. Bauhaus really know how to create a damn good atmosphere. I should listen to more Bauhaus as I was only really familiar with Bela Lugosi's Dead before listening to this. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
JL : 4, The Passion of Lovers (their worst album... In The Flat Field, The Sky's Gone Out or even Burning From The Inside would have been a 5)
Great Songs: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes Good Songs: Hair of the Dog, The Passion of Lovers, Of Lilies and Remains, Dancing, Kick in the Eye 2, In Fear of Fear, Muscle In Plastic, Mask Mid Songs: Hollow Hills Bad Songs:
Don't mind it, but don't really think it's all that good either.
Another one of those albums I like well enough but other, later bands have done much better versions of (I'd argue Bauhaus had contemporaries doing better versions of this too, Bela Lugosi was never that great of a song, and I like Peter Murphy's solo work better, but I am a little behind on the list and trying to catch up)
Goth!
Weird rock music. 2
weird
Ok :-) Mask is a stand out track
We're going into Halloween season, so this album fits the season in a way. It's gothic, and dark in a fun, spooky way. I just wish it had one good banger on it, instead of it coming off as just horror vibes, but overall, it was a decent experience. Favorite Track: "Dancing"
Fishcakes
an utter classic
Lots of grunts
The last track was alright, but on the whole I thought this was a bit cack
I was expecting this to be an electronic album, not punk. Still good though
18/09/2026 I can't say I loved it, but it certainly isn't a bad album! Spotify listeners: 873.6k
it's alright
Ok, not bad. Nothing remarkable.
The cover will give me nightmares. 3.
Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5
This album is so bad it's good. It has to be one of my new favorite albums. "1. David Jay 2. Peter Murphy 3. Kevin Haskins 4. Daniel Ash" is undoubtedly one of my top 10 favorite songs on this list so far.
In Randy Jackson voice, “It’s gonna be a no from me dog.”
Didn't do it for me
I guess I don't really like gothic rock, this just was not something that interested me during my listen.
Enjoyed it without it having an impact on me. Willing to listen again for potentially a higher mark.
Enjoyed more than i expected…at least the bits that weren’t just “noise”
Look, it's not for me. But there were moments when I understood that it's for other people
#260 Heard Before? Oddly enough, not that I remember. Notes: - Bauhaus sticking to the formula, for sure. - production is thin and trebly, like a lot of 4AD stuff. forgiveable. - mostly about mood. the songs could use more structure. Verdict: Bela Lugosi is, believe it or not, still dead. Listen Again? I enjoyed this album while it was on, but I'm not sure that anyone needs to hear more than maybe three Bauhaus songs.
Heroin nod music
1. "Kick in the Eye 2" 2. "The Passion of Lovers" 3. "Muscle in Plastic"
No private session used for spotify. I like the Bauhaus I have heard, but I don't think I have ever sat down and listened to an album. Moody and somewhat haunting great mid level goth(as opposed to entry level goth).
British post-punk was doing different things in the early 80s, and Bauhaus is no exception. These tracks are more accessible than classic punk of the late 70s, and include acoustic guitar and keyboards, which give it more an early alt-rock feel. I like that none of the songs on the original cut of the album sound the same. I would wager this album sounds better the more you listen to it.
Bauhaus is a band where I do like their sound, but I still find my self getting board before the end of any of their albums.
3.5.
A rollercoaster of confused enjoyment. Sometimes I enjoy the music, sometimes I tolerate the singing, sometimes it's just annoying.
Just not my cup of tea
Overall: 8/10 Every time I saw this album cover, I expected the music inside to be gloomy, depressing and boring. Imagine my surprise when it actually ends up being very upbeat in it's music with lots of variety in it's sounds. There are times where this album almost crosses over into new eave territory. The basslines especially put a big smile on my face. I haven't analyzed the lyrics enough to know if they're depressing or not, but for now, this is a great and danceable album. Fav Song: Kick in the Eye
Favorite Track: I Know What I Know
Listened before? No It just doesn't hit like the Bela Sessions do.
Gothic Rock/Post-Punk Favorite Songs: The Passions of Lovers, Dancing Least Favorite Song: Hollow Hills When I took a look at the average score on this website, I was a little skeptical, so I’ve took a look at the RYM site, which has a 3.62. And like…I don’t hate it. I feel like IMm somewhere in the middle. With the exception of two songs, I don’t want it in my library, but if someone were to play this album, I wouldn’t complain. 7/10
I mean, after Joy Division (tragically) disbanded, I doubt there was a better place to get your gothic post-punk fix than the group Bauhaus. While I remember not really digging their debut (though it's probably long overdue for a revisit), this album kicked ass. Every single song here has such a unique take on gothic punk. The obvious highlight here is 'The Passion Of Lovers', which is surprisingly accessible for this group, given its earwormy yet still very massive chorus and sort of hooky riff. 'Dancing' was also absolutely insane, just super cacophonous, and the out-of-nowhere bursts of noise and reverb had me feeling super anxious during the whole thing. 'Hollow This' has this slow trudge and proto-Swans feel to it, while 'Kick In The Eye' is undoubtedly the grooviest thing here. And while I do think it's pretty front-loaded, late album songs like 'The Man with X-Ray Eyes' and the closing title-track were definite album highlights. Especially that closer, the cavernous reverb and feedback on this thing was great, but then these gorgeous arpeggiated keys comes out of seemingly no where in the only rempotely gorgeous moment on the album. I love the way it sounds up against the lead vocalist's wailing and those deep guitar tones, such an incredible way to close out this record. And the lyrics on this album, while super abstract a lot of the time, undoubtedly have this really twisted and troubled edge to them, especially the imagery of a song like 'Of Lillies and Remains'. Great album and definitely very ahead of its time; I doubt early '80s gothic gets as dark and good as this.
Pretty good stuff but not enough bangers
I just don't like gothic rock very apparently
The epitome of happy music
Rate: 7.5/10.
Eh, fine. 3/5
Awesome post-punk album
Better than I thought
une vibe que t'as pas envie de retrouver tous les jours mais une vibe qd meme, très irrégulier au début je préfère les sons qui se dansent mais les autres façon chamanisme ne sont pas si biens, le son mask et in fear of fear est le meilleur je pense
Weird
3 - decent
Not for me. Very gloomy.
Better than I expected 3/5
Good stuff
Super unique and better sound quality overall than the previous Bauhaus record, which I think was their first or something early. Enjoyed this one. 3.9/5.0

Why is this on here?
I knew this would be freak ass
This is horrible. This sucks maybe every other song there’s about a 27 second interval that doesn’t suck utter dog shit.
