Reviews (page 3 of 7)

A bare bones proto-gothic classic, with an airless, uneasy vibe that probably launched a dozen bands. Daniel Ash's menacing, wildly diverse guitar work is solidly creepy while David J/Kevin Haskins' rhythm section can turn on a dime from chaotic to funky to funereal in a way I never thought I needed until today. Peter Murphy's sonorous but haunting vocal style is the most memorable element, the black frosting on the cake. Fave Songs: The Passion of Lovers, Mask, Hollow Hills, Hair of the Dog, The Man with the X-Ray Eyes, Kick in the Eye

Apparently, this is goth rock before goth rock, and I’ve never heard goth rock. This one is a weird and dark listen, striking lyrics and dark production. Vocals definitely need a minute to get used to though, as is the same with some small things. This is cool, I can see the appeal.

Really awesome, made me wanna go be a Goth kid in the graveyard on a cold tuesday

4. Interesting musical exploration

Loved a lot of the sounds on this one. Great album. Truly unique

Not my favourite Bauhaus album but still pretty good

British gothic 80s post-punk, so what's not to like? Perfect blend of aggression and catchy melodies.

Easily accessible to new listeners of the genre, but without giving up its dark and ominous vibes. It just flies by and ends on a high note!

Not the best, not the worst. Some songs on this are actually really good. Wish I could rate 3.5, but I can’t so I’ll give Mask by Bauhaus the benefit of the doubt and rate it a 4.

sui generis

Some of my favorite songs I’ve heard from this style of music so far. 3.5/5

Good and interesting dark post punk record - it’s kind of the true spiritual successor to Joy Division - with a little infusion of the remnants of the punk movement. It’s right up my street - not sure if it’s everyone’s cup of tea though.

Truly solid goth rock, though there was something in the production that bugged me that I can't put my finger on.

Dark, creepy, yet perfect. Definitely sets a specific eerie atmosphere.

Dark strange angular Gothic. Post punk and inventive. Like a lot. See the eighties did create good albums 3.75

I'm on board with Peter Murphy's sound. I like the challenging goth alternative sound with some very engaging tracks like Hair of the Dog, Passion of Lovers and Mask. I feel like i would have really been into Bauhaus in college had I been exposed earlier.

Such an interesting mix of goth and dance. They’d be a perfect act for a Halloween show, the haunting tones vocals even sound as if they’re singing from within a cave. The Passion of Lovers, Dancing, Kick in the Eye, X-Ray Eyes, really great tracks. The only song I didn’t really get into was the talking track of Lillies and Remains, too much chatter. Listened to the bonus album and there were some gems on there as well, Fish Cakes is so dumb but works. This was great gothy fun. 4 stars

This was another case where I was left unsure what to think of what I listened to. The sound was more varied than I expected and it was pretty cool. I liked it, and maybe I'd like it more over time? This would be an album that requires a relisten from me. My favourite song was probably Passion of Lovers.

This is THE example of the hybridized goth rock post punk, neo pseudo glam that everyone should hear or repeat forever. It’s not my favorite genre but this album is undeniable and absolutely fantastic.

👻👹🧛🏻

Fishcakes! Reminds me of the Cure. Liked this quite a bit.

Cool stuff

gets a little repetitive but definitely worth a listen, there were moments here and there that were just awesome and i wish those were more developed/prominent

The Cure but a bit scary.

Lot of different sounds, ska, goth rock, and dub. There were a couple really good songs. Like the title track. I thought the album could’ve been refined a bit more. 7/10

Great example of 80’s punk/new age. Classic

old school goth, very nice

Didn’t know what to expect from this, have heard of Bauhaus but did not know their style or genre or anything. I’m actually really enjoying this and it reminds me a lot of Joy division which is a good thing! Thoroughly enjoyable listen and probably will listen again :)

Bauhaus gets a free claim to the throne of gothic rock with their dark instrumentation and haunting production. Their debut album, In the Flat Field, perfected the gothic rock sound before anyone else even had a chance to experiment with it. While In the Flat Field had highs and lows, Mask feels like a more consistent show of quality. Unfortunately, I struggle to find the same highs that they had with their debut, making it feel less special as a result.

First listen, dark, loved it

Very amazing goth rock album :3 Very eccentric and creative. Love the saxophone on this album it's also quite catchy too

Liked passion of lovers and in fear of fear Lots of bangers with a few less banging bangers

I guess I was expecting 60 minutes of Bela lugosi. More varied then that. Overall a good listen.

I enjoyed listening to this one. Sort of like a Joy Division but not quite as bleak. Or as good.

Gothlyf

much respect to Bauhaus for experimantal post-punk, paved the way for many bands to-come

Good album, but not their best.

liked it way more than i expected.

Bauhaus really kicked off one of my most favorite genres of music—goth rock—so a lot of points for that. I haven’t listened to an entire bauhaus album all the way through before this one. I am well acquainted with Bella Legosi’s Dead, and this album stylistically adheres close to that formula—no real changes, sparse, creepy effects, evocative, strangled vocals, a general atmosphere of dread. Good shit! It always fascinates me how much of the post punk stuff was directly influenced by dub reggae, as reggae has kind of spun off into its own kind of dead-end, backwards-looking genre, while post punk keeps roaring along. The sound effects and bass lines were cribbed from dub. The relative few changes (often none) probably taken from dub. I’m just going to assume that massive amounts of ganja was smoked in studio. Which might not be the vision one has of goth rock, but I find it to be one of the sneakiest most psychedelic genres. Love and light was associated with hippie psychedelia, but there were darker, and sometimes, more true alleyways to be explored, as many people who had bad/deeply strange trips can attest to. It’s sort of the way the word “dream” has been associated with lovely things, when dreams, more often than not are alien, weird and terrifying.

Bauhaus’s second album features gothic rock over a lively rhythm section. The rhythms are danceable, and the vocals and guitar are thin and driving. The result is a post-punk masterpiece reminiscent of Joy Division that is still accessible to casual listeners. All in all I found this to be a very enjoyable and tight album.

"Mask" is the second studio album by English goth rock band Bauhaus. Post punk, gothic rock, experimental. Yep, that all fits. This album expanded on their debut by adding keyboards, acoustic guitar, a funky song and a saxophone. Bauhaus is Peter Murphy (vocals, guitar), Daniel Ash (guitars, sax), David J (bass) and Kevin Haskins (drums, keyboards). This album was also self produced. An annoying laser synth sound leads to the drums kicking in which opens "Hair of the Dog." Ominous synths. The pace picks up. Murhpy's vocals end up in screams at the conclusion. Subjecting yourself once more to the one thing that causes you pain. It doesn't get much more goth than that. Bass and an idiosyncratic drum beat highlight the start of the first single "The Passion of Lovers." Edgy guitar and like the previous song, this song builds and Murphy explodes. A girl seeks passion and ends up dying. "Dancing" actually starts fast. A heavy, heavy bass groove. This is more rock. Ash's guitar has that classic post punk, high pitched sound. This song could have been on Killing Joke's first album. The band adds the funk with the drumbeat and bass on their second single "Kick in the Eye." Guitar sounds going everywhere. Very hypnotic. This reminds me a lot of David Bowie's "Fashion." I think he's looking for drugs. Some more ominous laser synth sounds open the closer "Mask." The beat plodding along. Murphy is moaning. A welding sound. Hey, maybe that plays into the song's meaning. Welding Mask? Idk. Midway through, they add a creepy Mike Oldfield "Tubular Bells"-"Exorcist"-esque guitar. This was already a creepy enough song and then you have to go there, eh? This music is dark, hypnotic and has a high creep factor. This album would be in chapter one, page one in your Goth Rock 101 book. The guitar is edgy, the drums and bass have a deep sound and Murphy's voice is perfect for this music. You could pretty much draw a straight line from mid-70's David Bowie to industrial music and Nine Inch Nails with Bauhaus sitting dead center in the middle. Oh, of couse, I liked this album.

Easy album to listen to, The Passion of Lovers stood out for me

Back when I'd heard about goth music, but not actually listened to it, I always pictured it as being really mopey and morose. While it is definitely morose, goth music is so much more danceable than I would ever have imagined. This is an excellent example of that. It's a really fun listen, with catchy melodies combined with more experimental/spacey sounds. 4/5 Really cool early goth album. It shows a lot of the potential that the genre has. I understand a lot better why goth kids liked this music so much. I just don't understand why they were so sad

The pop bones and metal bones superimposed are interesting enough. For goth rock, almost every tune is piercingly accessible, but chord progressions and some percussion have a directional relationship with extreme music I think comes later. Sealing the deal is the call to leave the presentation entirely unpolished. Plenty of discord makes the shtick self-aware in a correct way, neither artifice nor irony.

just some good ol’ early 80’s goth rock by one of the pioneers of the genre. solid work.

Cool Album. The tone reminds me of David Bowie I like a lot if the songs. Favourite could be Mask?

If you can get past the Goth preconceptions, this a really strong Post-punk album.

One of my favorite things about this 1001 albums project is learning how to accurately predict the global score from other people. The fact that this album is almost a full point lower than The Eagles perfectly sums up the clientele of this project. 3.5/5

All I’ve previously heard from Bauhaus was their breakout single Bela Lugosi’s Dead and their acclaimed debut album which I found a bit one-note and dreary after a while. Imagine my surprise then when the follow-up release just keeps evolving in so many unexpected ways. I keep making a note of songs that are highlights and have practically listed the whole tracklist for a whole host of different reasons. Very inventive, quirky, goth vibes Update: I wrote the above while listening to Hollow Hills, and found the second half pretty underwhelming in comparison. Muscle in Plastic and the title track were both good, but the other songs didn’t live up to the potential that was clearly on show elsewhere

Loved it. A new one for me.

Contrary to belief, goths are some of the funkiest people out there

Very early goth. I'm an 80s everything human so I enjoyed it.

I've always like the vibe and image of Bauhaus but apart from their Bela Lugosi hit (which I bought on 12") could never get into them. Listening back now their sound is a lot more experimental (not mainstream at all) and authentic. 'Earwax' is a treat. It's pretty spare and basic (in a good way) so I'm happy to have reacquainted with them.

4.0 - Took me a bit to adjust to the muffled drum tracks but I ended up liking this album more than expected. I like the distant guitars that add an element of unrest in the background, as well as the riff on “Of Lilies and Remains.” The vocals, though thin, work well with tortured lyrics, enhancing an overall austere and gothic sound. I imagine I’ll like this even more after a few more listens. Standouts: “Dancing”, “In Fear of Fear”, “Mask.”

I wasn't really in the mood for it today, but I'm glad I gave it a listen anyways. really like this album!

The second release from one of the pioneers of goth rock is more varied than most of the other pioneers of the goth movement. You can hear much more of the post-punk influences, along with a little dub throughout. I was a fan of Peter Murphy's singing at this point (both for the band and for me personally) - I think later material can be a bit monotonous. The rest of the band is more varied as well. The acoustic elements and keyboard flourishes are welcome, as is the sax on occasion. I don't know if this one makes my list, but a pretty impressive effort all around.

This one took me a few days to digest, I wasn't really sure if I liked it or not at first. I've heard of Bauhaus before but I don't think I've listened to them actively. I knew this was going to be gothic rock so I expected something like The Cure, but I was surprised by just how dark and rough this is. Some of the songs were familiar to me, but the two singles(?), "The Passion of Lovers" and "Kick in the Eye" didn't appeal to me as much as the fantastic "Hollow Hills", "The Man With X-Ray Eyes", and "Mask". I think I'll be revisiting it a lot, and I'm delighted to have found it. It's a 4 for me right now because I find it a bit uneven, but I could see the punkier songs growing on me, which could eventually raise it to a 5. Side note: I'm getting sick of the sneaky "Bonus tracks" and "Deluxe Editions" on Spotify. They should be either clearly labelled as bonus or you should be able to filter for the original version. With this album, the title track has a very definite end to it which is kind of spoiled by the 5 off cuts that follow it. Plus it makes the album like 50% longer...I have over 1000 albums to get through here!

This kind of classic gothy post-punk tends to be to my taste. It might have to do with the rhythms. Must investigate further

This is Tuesday 11 pm WPRB music. It definitely has a crowd, I’m just not in it. In a purely neutral way, it has a timeless quality, it’s hard to assess when it came out without checking. This band feels very influential, “Hollow Hills” feels like the intro to a nirvana song, so clearly the band is pulling on the right strings. Kick In the Eye is a really tight song, and a much better use of that plunky 80s bass sound than yesterday’s album

It doesn't have Bela Lugosi's Dead on it, but I still enjoy it. Have never listened to the album in its entirety and it doesn't quite all gel for me but still liked most of it. I know it's gothish, but also strikes me like David Bowie made an album with The Doors after they finished Soft Parade.

Loved this. Bowie meets Art Brut and that is right up my straße

Driving guitar, intense music from the experimental legends of alternative rock.

Wait until mid-album. It gets worth it.

Very interesting sounds! Still pretty 80s

Had to board a bus at 5:30am, put this song on and was surprised how well this album complemented the pre-dawn atmosphere. So far the two moods are “spooky ghost” and “spooky ghost d a n c e”, and I’m satisfied. HL: “Hollow Hills”, “Mask”, “Kick in the Eye”

Spooky season is upon us and I am loving this emo boy music

Long time listent of Bauhaus, very enjoyable.

Love a bit of goth and post-punk, and wasn't familiar with this album, so it was a very nice discovery. Judging by some of the reviews I need to get hold of the CD reissue as some of the bonus tracks generated quite a few comments... Fave track - "The Man With X-Ray Eyes" sounded most gothy. Liked the dancepunkiness of "Dancing", too...

I like this style in general, and some of the tracks sound very different and interesting. The album is a bit long, though; there is definitely some filler that could be left out.

Very good, not as good as the debut tho 🤷

I like this record more when it's energy levels are higher. The varied instrumentation, including saxophone and piano, are nice. The slower, darker moments are also nice, though my attention is held more during the livelier tracks. Favorite tracks: "Of Lillies and Remains", "Dancing", "The Man With X-Ray Eyes"

Not as gothy as I thought it would be. Still a unique voice and sound though.

Almost flawless. Better than the debut album?

Highlight: Kick in the Eye, The Passion of Lovers. I'm not sure how to interact with this album. It feels like it's having a conversation I don't know enough to keep up with.

Aw such an immersion of memories for me! Remember booking this out from my local library. Creds to the librarian who added it to the stock!

I had never heard of this. They really brought out the fun in goth. I loved the theatricality of the album. So many unexpected twists and turns in each song.

Never got into Bauhaus which is weird as they would seem on the surface to be right in my wheelhouse. Well the first two songs are great and there are a couple surprisingly good dance tracks. 1. David Jay 2. Peter Murphy 3.... is a strange trip of a song. There's some real variety here and its less dark than anticipated. Enjoyed it more than I thought 3.75

Absolutely loved this album, totally off the wall, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't find the lyrics captivating. Interesting.

Utterly charming. Just the right amount of strange.

I'm a sucker for this kind of monochromatic music.

Definitely got more into it the more of a chance I gave it. It has that 80s vocal-trappings which sometimes bring it down a bit for me, but damn there are some nice grooves in here as well as some interesting instrumentation. Had to listen to it twice, was originally a 3.5 rounded down to 3 but I think I have to go up to 4 since it is intriguing enough to me. Especially as the album evolves/devolves into experimental.

This is a very weird moody album but I mostly really dug it even if it’s a bit hard to get into. 4/5

Surprisingly accessible and clear to hear how Bauhaus have influenced other bands. The Bravery, Interpol. lots of Bauhaus in their sound. I always had Bauhaus pegged as a band that were impressive but difficult to love, that's changed after spending time with this album. I'll definitely be dipping further into their work

Sólo conocía The Passion of Lovers. Songs: The Passion of Lovers, The Man with the X-Ray Eyes

It rocked... occasionally

Enjoyed the music, not in love with the filler noise stiff.

I might be a Bauhaus fan now! Kind of had them looped in with The Cure but I enjoyed it more than them. I can definitely see where AFI got some of their modern sound.

Good but not my fav of theirs

I like this FISH CAKES!

I had no idea what to expect, but thoroughly enjoyed the album.

As I approach my mid-30’s, the biggest driver of what I listen to is that I’m a Deadhead - so the great majority of the time that I’m listening to music, it’s jam bands, or the myriad of genres they draw their influence from. Even in such a kaleidoscope of musical styles, goth rock isn’t one of them. However, when I was in high school I listened to a ton of 80’s alternative & indie, so Bauhaus is a band I’ve known of for years upon years, all the songs most people know like “Bella Lugosi’s Dead”, “Stigmata Martyr” or this album’s own “The Passion of Lovers”, to name a few. I’d always figured these guys were more of a singles band than anything else, and for the first five songs of this record the music was mostly background noise in my AirPods while I went about some chores at home. Imagine my surprise when I reached “Kick in the Eye” and a bass line started that sounded like something Phil Lesh would’ve laid down on a version of “Dancing in the Street” from the late 70’s - I sat up straight and the album had my full attention! From that point on it’s more like a melange of goth, funk, and experimentalism, and a far more interesting album than what the initial five tracks suggest.

Can hear a lot of ways that they influenced later artists. Interesting stuff!

Absolutely loved it. I only give it 4 stars because The last songs of the album felt quite weak for me

Pretty good album. Never heard of it, but it's a solid mix of goth rock and pop.

I kind of love how bad the production is on this. It can't destroy how much I like these songs. Not an album I was familiar with before, but will listen again.

Puro sonido post-punk / siniestro / gothic rock . Canciones como Hair of the dog, Kick in the eye, Muscle in plastic o The man with X-Ray eyes.

Pretty cool

Never would have checked these guys out, like it a lot! Other bands borrowed from them for sure

1981. Key Songs: Kick in the Eye, The Man with X-Ray Eyes, Dancing

Nice drum sounds.

Was interesting but not my jam. Longish and wish there was a bit more melody or beat,

nice vintage New Wave, Historic

Way better than I expected, so that's a pretty massive win in my book.

Thin production and some ambience makes this, musically, a hauntingly good goth record. Although the singer's voice makes it hard for me to take this seriously.

FISHCAKES

The thing i've found with what people would most often call “goth” music is that it is so deep into mood. What that mood is can be a moving target, but a big piece of it is the outer trappings. Let's look at “hollow hills”. It's very spare, with a murky bass and guitar, but the more dramatic bits are the slow thump of drum, both muffled and echoed, or the hum and whine of the guitars over the top. It's not always in service to great songs, but it tends to be interesting texturally when it is not. Would bauhaus want to be called goth at all? Most of the most iconic goth bands don't. They can be wrong. As far as actually liking this? Eh. I am less excited. Again, there's some solid bass here mostly, but the songs are much thinner as songs. When we think of Bela Lugosi's Dead, their very not on a proper album breakthrough, it works because of atmosphere and a certain drone/trance vibe, like an incantation. It's over long, but it is primed to be appreciated anyway because of that incantationlike vibe. You're in a ritual. That's what really carries over from Hollow Hills, too. So while I can really appreciate the composition, the drums and groove of something like Muscle in Plastic, it doesn't really come together as a song so much as an audio idea. It's admittedly a genre i still find hard to figure out, like it is in the dank cave that the sound often evokes, so maybe with enough similar albums I will end up with a different view and revisit this. But for now it's a pretty light (and I guess dark) 3*.

So, more dark post punk. Not bad by any measure, but also not especially exciting.

2.5 stars I liked parts of it. It varied up, wasn’t too samey. But not sure how much I’d return to it.

Yeah alright

A bit too droney for me in spots

Sometimes playing the part of "the one that isn't Joy Division," a relatively frantic and upbeat '80s goth album with some different sound to offer from track to track, they don't carry some of the weight or leave the impact of their fellows, but it's still pretty cool and also the ending of the title track has something nice going on

I like this genre and sound, but none of these songs really moved my needle much. It’s fine. “Dancing” is good. Other songs were a little annoying.

Interesting punk experimental with a lot of different sounds and styles. Creative and diverse. Wide variety of guitar tones.

I thought this was very interesting. Did not expect so much rhythm in something called goth rock. I added “Harry” to my playlist

Decent rock album. Nothing noteworthy but a fair listen.

Very very strange ... Not bad though!

I don’t feel strongly about this one way or the other.

It wasn't the worst, but sometimes, when I'm trying to enjoy a song, it plays some random loud noise that scares me?? Experimental just for the sake of it

I'm in a weird spot here. I don't particularly love it, but I don't dislike it. I can hear where it would have been amazing in 1980 and I bet a lot of the bands I love would have loved it.

Enjoyable enough while sitting on a long flight and zoning out. Not something I'd go out of my way for or regularly care to listen to.

We wanted to merge all artistic mediums into one unified approach and all we got was this mid album.

I’ve never listened to Bauhaus, but this was certainly unique. Definitely felt pretty cool listening to this. Lots of good ideas in here, and I can hear how this album has influenced music today. Slowed down a bit by the end, but it was pretty good overall. Favorites: Hair of the Dog, Of Lilies and Remains

not bad at all

Hair of the Dog 3.6 The Passion of Lovers 3.4 Of Lilies and Remains 3.2 Dancing 3.6 Hollow Hills 3 Kick in the Eye 3.3 In Fear of Fear 3.3 Muscle in Plastic 3.4 The Man with the X-Ray Eyes 3.5 Mask 3.3 Score: 3.36

Hair of the dog - 3 The passion of lovers - 3 Of lilies and remains - 3 Dancing - 4 Hollow hills - 3 Kick in the eye - 4 In fear of fear - 3 Muscle in plastic - 3 The man with x-ray eyes - 4 Mask - 3

Yeah, it’s ok but it never really gets going for me - a bit slow and stodgy until the latter part of the album. Not bad, but not listening again.

Bauhaussie ?

It wasn't without its cool moments, very jammy and odd which I liked. Lots of expression. It never quite seemed to take off except for maybe a couple of tracks but perhaps that's the point. Music to listen to when you don't really want to listen to anything in particular?

Spooky.

nothing special, nothing particularly bad. A bit dull

Was alright.

Lo fi synth goth. Little bit of Joy Division meets early Cure. Got a bit redundant but not bad.

Blind album and artist. Definitely not something I would find on my own, but likes the echo-like sounds and style. 3.

Some gothic rock that doesn't sound very goth to me. At least not what I expected. '81 feels quite early for goth, so I assume this was pioneering that field. As for the music, there were some decent tracks here and there, but not really anything that speaks to me. Weak 3.

Moody 80s music - a sound that gelled with me. Not the greatest number of hits though. The only track that stood out to me was “The Passion of Lovers”. I really enjoyed the mix of dark electronic tracks and some funky riffs. Made me think of Joy Division or The Human League. Mid 3 with possibility for more in the future.

I still have this but have now listened for the first time in a long time, and I am mildly disappointed. There are the singles (Passion of Lovers and Kick In The Eye), and highlights (Hair of the Dog, XRay Eyes, Mask) but there is too much filler (Of Lilies, Earwax, Plastic) There is nostalgia tapping along and enough to warrant an OK rating. 1. Kick in the Eye 2. Passion Of Lovers 3. Mask

Yes, everyone should listen to at least one Bauhaus album. But shouldn't it be the one with "Bela Legosi's Dead"?

The Passion of Lovers”, aunque mi favorita terminó siendo “Kick in the Eye”. En resumen, le doy un 7/10.

Better than I thought was going to be for a goth album. Had different elements to it that kept it interesting. Rating: 5/10 Favorite Song: Kick in the Eye

It is basically like wandering through a very spooky haunted house where the ghosts are actually art students trying to explain philosophy to you. Some rooms are terrifyingly cool, but others just feel like a confusing mess of weird noises and capes.

There are some Bauhaus songs that I absolutely love but many on here are for a very specific mood. The production quality is not great on the version I listened to.

Not good

Parts of this was pretty interesting and then others just felt like they were pushing too hard to be "different". Just okay overall, cool sounds that were pretty different, but just kinda weird as a whole.

Some of this sounds kinda cool but then some of it sounds someone got bored practing guitar and started fucking around

Just barely into the 3 stars, a shoutout for something truly different and creative. Weird at times, but a good jam at others.

#906. I can't tell if it's terrible or amazing. Perhaps a bit of both? 3/5: good

A Btec Joy Division

Favourite Songs: Dancing

*1981. English goth rock. *This is kinda cool. Sounds a bit like the Cure meets David Bowie. *A little goes a long way, and I wouldn't revisit it. But it's a fine listen. RATING - 6/10

WELL...I liked a handful of tracks.

Some of this was good but mostly I was waiting for something more interesting to happen.

It was fine/good. A 3.5.

Another random English band that I've never heard of before or will again. I will say that this one was at least cohesive all the way through and wasn't terrible.

Gotiška, tinka. Nėra per daug agresyvu, galima laisvalaikiu pasiklausyt.

IT was OK

Never heard of this band before. Kept my interest. Fishcakes? WTF? Would I listen again? Yes, but I’d skip fishcakes.

I’m down with this chill goth rock. Nice throwback.

Interesting, not heard it before, felt a bit erratic in places, but would like to come back to it.

Kinda fun. Sounds like drugs. 3/5

I’m not sure this hangs together from start to finish. But the music is competent and distinctive, if not entirely my thing.

too samey for how long it was. couldnt differentiate too much between songs. and then at the end i could and it sucked. still better than most

Some very interesting sounds, a few songs I quite liked, moments where I thought I was listening to the cure, but it didn’t quite cohere 1. David Jay 2. Peter Murphy 3. Kevin Askins 4. Daniel Hall - an intriguing 8 minutes

An album of two halves for me. Some tracks I love, others I was just confused by. Parts of it feel like proto Pixies which I can get fully behind, the other half was probably too experimental in a way that wasn’t massively cohesive for me. Felt like those tracks came from the school of flinging things at the wall and seeing what sticks. I’d probably give it a 3.5 if I could but will have to settle on a 3.

3/19/26. First time listening to Bauhaus and this was a good introduction, didn't know what to expect. Loved the darker sound and melodies worked into each song.

Not really my kind of thing, but interesting nonetheless

Pretty good and feels ahead of its time.

Day 215 A band I hadn’t listened to before, very interesting album, not really like anything else I’ve heard on the list. Highlights Hollow Hills Kick in the Eye

Some parts I enjoyed, cool bass playing, but meh otherwise

As Goth, it did a good job of not filling the listener with much emotion.

Top Songs: The Passion of Lovers Kick in the Eye

me for the past nine months: gee i wonder what the album will be on the day my baby is born cursed mickey mouse:

standouts: dancing, hollow hills, kick in the eye, honorable mentions: the passion of lovers, of lilies and remains, in fear of fear favorite: hollow hills

if this were a video essay about the architectural style this would be an easy five but nooooo it's music. i didn't really know what to expect going in (ana thought i'd hate it), but it's not bad. "the passion of lovers" is really interesting. the way that track opened with the bass made me raise my eyebrow for the rest of the album. "in fear of fear" might be the best to me on here because that bass is *very* nice to listen to. it's all pretty back and forth between songs that have some groove and songs that just Don't. i kinda love how much this sounds like shit too tbh. the vocals are terrible and they know it so they throw it in the back of the mix and cake the whole thing in enough reverb that it sounds like he's singing through a can and it somehow kinda works? bizarre. ZERO clue why there's a random reggae track though.

Not really anything wrong with this but it's a little less interesting to me than I'd hoped.

Funkier than I expected, by reputation. I see how they are widely influential across genres. I think I enjoy listening to some of their acolytes more.

Not my favourite style of music, but interesting none the less. I can definitely hear Joy Divison's influece, but I can also hear echoes of what came later. It sort of blended into the background and didn't really grab my attention.

An interesting, dark album. I was constantly surprised by how the songs evolved. This isn't my favorite thing, but it is unique. Favorite track: "Mask"

Berlin Bowie-esce, a bit dark

Do you like bass-forward artsy goth rock? If so, you might like this. Bauhaus was THE original goth rock band and kudos go to them for making some very original music. I will say that in terms of listenability, I like the parts (Peter Murphy solo and Love and Rockets) better than the whole… especially Peter Murphy’s solo work. Again, groundbreaking and original. Torn between a 3(how much I personally like it) and a 4( true influential album).

I might have had a friend in college who was into Bauhaus. I wasn't, but it's kinda cool now.

It's good music but not to my liking.

Meh. One or two interesting tracks, but it got too self indulgent. Middle of the road stuff here.

Weird gothic fun house vides here. I had mixed feelings. There were a few songs I liked, a few I didn't care for, and the majority was just okay.

Bowie fronts Joy Division. Not an instant 4-5 star but can see myself growing to really like this one. Will come back to it.

Adding this to the "I think it's good but still can't fully get around it" pile. What was all the fish cake stuff? RYM: N Saved a song: N

You know what, actually hell yeah, fun enough listen, not like the other german headache

Non male dai

Favorite songs: The Passion of Lovers, Hollow Hills, Kick In the Eye 2, The Man with the X-Ray Eyes

I quite liked this stupid little gothy album. I wanted to pat it on the head and give it a biscuit.

Pretty decent, but not my jam. Seems like the kind of thing you had to start liking in your teens or twenties.

Get pegged by ur 6‘2“ goth baddie to this, short kings

Felt like a concept album where goth band tries everything else, it wasn't bad just a little strange

Glad to get chance to discover more from Bauhaus besides Bela Lugosi is dead. This is quite decent, will rate at least 3.5 on Rym. Couple songs already went to post punk playlist and will REVISIT. I think I will give 3 stars after few listens, but this one might even reach 4 in the future, very enjoyable and good post-punk/gothic rock album.

80's goth rock is so silly but also pretty fun. I never would have gone out of my way to listen to this if it hadnt been for this list so once again it worked some magic. The Passion of Lovers is probably the standout here, I'm not sure if I really like it all that much, but it nails the feeling of the album for me. A little spooky, depressing, loud and stilted lyrics. This is definitely worth a listen if not only for a good hallmark of the genre. I mean Of Lilies and Remains has "endless flow of ectoplasmic white goo from ears and mouth" right there in the lyrics, freaky as fuck! Its goofy, its spooky, its fun. Is it great? nah, but maybe its the type of goth rock white goo you're looking for.

You’re going to make us listen to a Bauhaus album and it’s not even going to be the Bela Sessions?!?!? Criminal. This album started off really strong and I was loving it but the longer it went the less I liked it until it just sort of ended. What a shame. The Bela Sessions is a tight 20 and that’s great! Almost an hour is too much Bauhaus

Very good, early Goth album. The songs are expectedly eerie, and still sound spooky to this day, not something you can say of a lot of bands from the time. The editors of the book could have gone with their debut, In the Flat Field, instead for an even more pitch-black sound world, although neither album includes the band's best song, "Bela Lugosi's Dead". Key tracks: Hair of the Dog The Passion of Lovers Of Lillies and Remains

Certainly makes you feel cooler listening to this. Like you know there is a tiny group of dudes who hold this in high esteem and they are dwindling by the year and eager to add to their ranks and paint their nails black. I’m proud of those guys for holding true to what they believe in. Takes courage.

I really like the backing but it's hard to get behind the vocalist

Their second album. New Wave / Post Punk / Rock. A very Joy Division esque opening track. Hair Of The Dog. Of Lilies And Remains and Dancing are good tracks. Industrial production and plenty of reverb. All in all it's a pretty good album. Cure Division !?

Gothy 80's goodness but nothing special for me in this moment

Classic goth, but I always liked Bauhaus in smaller chunks

Pretty solid

This album goes all over the place, but there are some definite highlights and lowlights. Lowlights: Of Lilies and Remains - Random speak sing thing. not my jam Ear Wax - Why? 1. David Jay 2. Peter Murphy 3. Kevin Haskins 4. Daniel Ash - more random incoherent rambling Satori - not bad, just boring music. Highlights: Kick in the Eye Hair of the Dog In Fear of Dub Harry 2.9 out of 5

Some of this I liked quite a lot; I especially liked "Kick In The Eye." Other bits felt like a slightly less good Joy Division. A pretty solid three.

Moments of real charm but somewhat monotonous.

I liked it but not an album I’d play a lot.

I liked the last bongo song but the rest wasn't my fav

i was finding the vibe to some songs but then they kept getting weird

I don’t know, I thought I’d like it more. Moody and sometimes catchy. An attempt at fusing post-rock, goth rock, and pop music that sometimes succeeds and sometimes falls short. Competent but doesn’t excite me.

šteta. ima dosta dobrih momenata. najbolja stvar: "of lillies and remains"

It’s cool i guess. Feels like joy division with less oomph, more grit. Don’t really care for this album much though.

Mask was certainly an interesting album. After seeing this album have "Experimental" in it's genre tags on Wikipedia, this was an album where i thought anything goes. What i ended up getting though feels like a budget Killing Joke. There are a fair few things that this album and Killing Joke's self-titled album share and those include the electronic elements, the general sound of the bass and the fact that both bands are British (Okay, that third one might be pushing it but who cares?). While i don't like this album nearly as much as that one, i can still see a fair bit of good in this one and it was still a pretty good listen. Best Song: Kick in the Eye Worst Song: Hollow Hills

Bauhaus were early in the Goth scene and creation of the sound and esthetic. Shows on this album where it is very raw and spooky. Liked a lot of the bass and shearing guitars. But I find myself wishing it was more similar to The Cure, and left cold by comparison. 3⭐️

Goth classic

Mask is a decent display of what Bauhaus has to offer. The sharp, dissonant guitar playing and the persistent drumming create a supremely dark atmosphere. Still, I wish many of the songs would’ve taken it further. I loved the title track and its weirdness along with a couple of other moments. Not their best work, but it’s a solid batch of songs.

They’ve never really been my thing but I’d been meaning to give this a try for a while. I wasn’t expecting any surprises, but I did get some. Keyboards. It gets funky from time to time. It sounded like Japan (the band) sometimes! I’m not a convert but I will give this another try soon.

Wasn't into this at first but I found myself enjoying the weirder, more experimental back half of the album.

I probably shouldn't have listened to this at 11am, not exactly the witching hour. No sir, not too spooky an hour at all. This album is unsurprisingly a vibe, and even though I wasn't quite in the mood for that vibe when I listened to it I'll definitely come back to it when I fancy it. I was surprised that it got kinda dubby near the end, but that wasn't unpleasant either (and looking it up, the last 5 tracks are all bonus tracks they added on for shits and giggles, which makes a lot more sense)

Not what I expected and it was certainly an interesting listen.

So much more palatable compared to the last two days. Truly gothic and not afraid to just air an idea out and experiment a bit. What weakens this album a bit is that there's not much to latch on to. Sometimes I felt a bit like things got a bit too hazy. Some meandering was done. Not anything offensive, but occasionally hard to stick with. Track 14 (the one that's just their names) was quite cool though, with the speeding up of the tape track, and lyrics that seemed to just be stream-of-consciousness. Fish cakes!! My pick is "Man with X-Rray Eyes" as it's quite catchy. Soft 3/5

As a rule, I generally hate the band Bauhaus, but forced myself to listen to this album with an open mind. Once my bad mood subsided, I recognized the influence this band has had on many of my favorite artists, as well as the unique, ahead-of-its-time production quality. I’d still punch the lead singer in the face if given the chance, but this wasn’t as egregiously terrible as I was expecting. Just a tad, lol.

I will give it a 3, it was different and but not so weird that it was unenjoyable.

This was a pretty interesting album. Lots of 80s new wave vibes with some edge to it. I liked it.

This wasn't that bad... they switched up their style a bit throughout the album. Lead singer kind of sounded like the guy from B52s and I kept wanting to hear him say "So hurry up and bring your JUKEBOX MONEY!".

Goth rock can be hit or miss for me - there was some good parts here and some not so good parts. Not great, not terrible.

I’ve warmed to goth music more recently in my life so whilst this wasn’t an unpleasant listen, it didn’t really grab me above some of other bands in the genre that I’ve been introduced to in the past couple of years. I’m not sure of the lineage here but it also seemed to have elements of post-punk too which makes sense given the year of release. Overall it was decent but if I was looking for a fix in this genre, I think I’d be more likely to look elsewhere.

I really enjoyed the front half not so much the second. A decent listen overall.

Solid post punk but nothing that screams super unique. All songs pretty much ran into one another, sounded like one long post punk song?

Bauhaus are Joy Division for pop poseurs. This album is fine but does very much sound like a less committed Joy Division.

At some points I loved this and at others I hated it...often in the same song.

A really frustrating album. Only when you get so bored you want to turn it off do they do something interesting 3.4

Not the best Bauhaus album but pretty good

honestly better than i was expecting it to be after judging the album art and hearing the first 30 seconds of the album. it wasn’t exceptional or anything but it was fine enough

Mask really threw me off. It’s strange, unpredictable, and kind of hard to hold onto — Of Lilies and Remains is fascinatingly weird, but I’m not sure it’s something I’d come back to often. Still, I don’t dislike the Passion of Lovers.

The one you want to hear is The Sky's Gone Out

Fairly enjoyable, goth rock in the mould of Joy Division and The Cure. I liked the moody atmosphere and it's certainly a distinctive sound Probably not super memorable, there are some decent tracks but also some plodders which make me unlikely to re-play

their debut is better but this is a fun album, less moody and gothic and more danceable

Eclectic and quite Bowieesqe

Not too bad.

Bauhaus, I thought, would at least be more interesting than this. As it goes, it was relatively enjoyable, but nowhere near as gothy or dark as I was expecting really. They'll remain a bit of a t-shirt band to me I guess.

Crash bang moan groan

Imma be real with you, I was really busy and stressed at work yesterday so even though I listened to this album I don't remember it at all. Maybe that means there weren't many standouts? It was alright I guess? Not familiar with Bauhaus but was expecting to like this more.

Interesting album Standout songs: Dancing Hollow Hills In Fear of Fear

I struggle a bit to get behind them. Not that it's bad, just not quite for me. The idea of their weirdness is appealing, not so much the execution.

Some interesting tunes on here. I like how the guitar often seems to be playing its own song. I'm a bit distracted at how much this sounds like Bowie, but it's still pretty solid.

I was a little disappointed by this one. I enjoyed it enough but I expected a little more from Bauhaus. Favorite track: The Passion of Lovers

I didn’t hate it!

Bauhaus really led the goth charge out of post-punk, and were pretty influential. However, I don't think this is their best album, I much prefer its predecessor, In The Flat Field, and of course some of the singles.

ned ds abwechsligsrichsta album aber hätt trotzdem was wo mer gfallt

I liked it more than I thought I would!

Not bad.

This was ok. 3.2

caveman goth..

One song reminded me of Nirvana. Others reminded me of The B-52’s. Those aren’t comparison I’d have expected on the same album… that was before the song that sounded like The Aquabats.

I was expecting worse, but there were occasionally some jams here.

I'm really not sure what to say about this album. There were songs I liked, and songs I disliked, but I'm glad to know that Bauhaus wasn't just "Bela Lugosi is dead" cause I was never a fan of that song.

real goth music. i never got into these guys, but they have always been on my radar from other people. not gigantic for this list, but a very weird and hard to explain time in music. it shows how quickly this scene was changing from the very beginning. 3/5

Rating: 2.7 My girlfriend and I were having sex to this album (figured I’d kill 2 birds with one stone) and she was getting where you’re supposed to go and then that song that says “FISH CAKES!!!!” started playing and she started laughing so hard we had to stop early. Fuck you Bauhaus.

I don’t love this album BUT I respect the influence they had. Fav song - man with the x-ray eyes.

There’s definitely a good amount of creativity and uniqueness in the sounds on this album, but for some reason it just feels kinda so-so for me. I can’t quite tell what it is, but much of the material doesn’t interest me very much. It definitely does have some great stuff going on, though.

Quirky, super British. Like a weird grungy version of Bowie and the B 52s mashed together

This is ok. Too long of an album. I get really bored when everything sounds the same.

A good choice if you want moody rock/pop music.

Quite an interesting album, the production is really good, very strong post punk feel

Reminiscent of the Cure but not as catchy. 3.2

Was expecting way worse, but it was ok. It even sounded advanced for its release date.

If i asked for an experimental new wave album to play against my teen amgst film this would be it.

A bit rubbish but does have a sort of endearing nostalgic quality nonetheless. Sounds a bit like the Cure or Joy Division but not as good as either.

I always think Bauhaus are going to be unbearable industrial noise, but they are quite middle of the road, with a sprinkling of Art School pretention. Unfortunately, I had Bella Lugosi's Dead on a mixtape in my teens, and none of their other stuff measures up to it (on first listen).

Ticks all the 80s New Wave/Post Punk boxes. I did like the basslines, albeit basic but effective.

Atmospheric and artistic, with an experimental edge that felt way ahead of its time. I especially connected with the moody, textured side of the album—it really shows why Bauhaus are seen as pioneers.

Let me start with the premise that I have never been a HUGE fan of goth rock from the 80s. I usually prefer a clearer and crispier production rather than a gloomy and "reverberated" one, so take this entire review with a grain of salt. This album feels like if Joy Division and Talking Heads made a joint record without actually cooperating on the songs. Some songs like Hollow Hills feel like Joy Division, while others like Kick in the Eye straight up sound like a Talking Heads song, from the way of singing to the rythmic section. Speaking of singing, I feel like Peter Murphy's voice is at its best when he's doing his best Bowie impression like in Hollow Hills or Kick in the Eye, but I'm a massive Bowie simp so I'm biased. As far as instrumentation goes, the bass is very catchy in pretty much all of the songs and the droning guitar can add nice atmosphere like it does in Hair of the Dog and in Dancing, but it does gets stale after a while since my pet peeve with this record is that all the Talking Head-ish songs follow the same structure and get boring after you hear the same "beginning of the bass line followed by the drums coming in at full force" for the 5th time in a row. One thing I don't get is why some songs have a much clearer production than others (Muscle in Plastic or In Fear of Dub for instance). It's so odd when you compare to how much clearer other songs like Of Lillies and Remains (which is straight up just The Gift by The Velvet Underground), I just don't get it. Speaking of songs, some highlights are for sure Hollow Hills where the atmosphere is peak "cemetery at night" with the drums accompanying relentlessy the whole song with just the kick. Kick in the Eye is also a great song that makes you just want to get up and dance with its groovy bassline, but the best song is undoubtably Mask: begins like something that could easily be a soundtrack to a hord of zombies slowly but surely marching towards something or someone in the most cinematic way possible and then in the second half you get hit with this absolutely beautiful guitar that makes you feel like you've been freed from a dark tomb, after being forcefully confined in it for years. This alone bumps up the rating a little bit, genuinely one of the Greatest things I've heard in music. Worst song is probably Harry. What was that even? Is it their attempt at a reggae song? Too goofy and in contrast with the rest of the record. Either way, this is just my opinion. So try not to pay too much attention to it. Rating: 3 stars/7-

I enjoyed this but the back half of the album contained a lot of songs that were riding both sides of silly. "Almost silly" is fine, I like "almost silly." But, uhhh, "too silly" was there too.

it's not my favorite bauhaus but it'll do in a pinch

Funky but cool

I remember these guys. Kick in the Eye & Fear of Dub my faves

Brings back memories. I'm into the sound, the feel, the howls. Listening to this album years later, I agree with Stuart, it's got some swing.

The ghosts of Jim Morrison and Iggy Pop inhabit this rather upbeat goth affair. There are still some down tempo numbers but theres a lot of groove here to get the kids swinging there clove cigarettes in the air.
