Amnesiac
RadioheadI mean, yeah, fine. Radiohead has never been my bag.
I mean, yeah, fine. Radiohead has never been my bag.
I am sorry but I simply cannot take this music seriously
Something new for me - I liked that the lyrics and beats were a bit silly and that the sound samples were new and original for the time. I probably won’t listen again but am glad I did.
The sound is familiar to me as I know other Bowie material, but I hadn't heard this album. Enjoyable!
Some of the songs were a little unsettling for me to listen to melodically. The overall tonal quality is pretty driving/frantic, which wasn't really the mood I was in when listening. It was fine but probably not an album I'll listen to again.
This isn't really the genre for me -- much of this music sounded the same to me.
Some familiar/comforting Stevie Wonder chord progressions and melodic styling in here, even though I only knew one of the songs.
I loved this album! The music just made me feel good/awake/alive. :)
Hard pass. I feel like this is 1) the music playing in every Hot Topic and/or 2) the music Tim played in high school.
I feel like this is the album that has been playing in every record store I've ever gone into. It's fine and I understand that it's a seminal work, it's just not my style.
I liked this! It's always very chill for me to listen to music in languages other than English. The vibe of the album was relaxing but upbeat -- good music to do chores to. :)
I did not expect to like this album but I REALLY did! I loved the very strong beats and bass as well as the repetition -- I liked listening for new things in the music through each repetition of a bass line or melodic phrase.
I really loved the vibe of this album! Some fun, funky, retro ska that I really enjoyed.
After the interminable first track this became an okay album, but not my genre at all.
Again, I can see how there are people who like this album, but it's not my genre at all. Just vocals about how sad the singer is to be alone; the instrumentation feels pretty dated to me.
I mean, it's fine. I can see putting this on to do homework or something, but I wouldn't put it on if I were just like "I want to listen to some music."
Some old favorites but also new listens on this album for me. I liked hearing some remnants of Simon & Garfunkel combined with nascent later Paul Simon solo work.
Well, certainly not an album I would put on to improve my mood -- beautiful, bleak songwriting here.
This is one of the first One Album a Day albums that I would come back to just listen to for fun -- I really liked the indie sound of this record and enjoyed the various beats and tempos of the different songs.
I love that Queen and this album never take themselves too seriously. :)
I really don't like when all songs on an album sound the same to me. I get that this band is going for a certain sound -- lots of electric guitar and scream-singing from the vocalists -- but it's just that I don't care for the sound itself.
I mean, yes, fine. Good old '90s acoustic/alt sound, which I like, but after a while this album gets pretty long and the songs all start to sound similar.
I liked this album more than Dusty in Memphis because this is mostly oldies/60s covers from Burt Bacharach, Carole King, etc and has less of the lounge singer vibe than her other album I've listened to through 1001 Albums so far. I like that retro vibe and enjoyed listening to this album!
Bon Iver on speed
Not entirely sure what's going on with the ambient sounds combined with the retro/dweeby vibe of most of the songs. Was it retro/dweeby at the time? Not sure. Anyway. It's Beach Boys.
Fucking unlistenable
Nope! Don't like that!
All instrumental, probably a little experimental at the time, decent music for doing homework.
High school throwback! Very familiar sound but still don't love Chris Martin's voice.
Quintessential '90s alt-rock -- I only knew 'Wonderwall' so it was interesting to hear more of their stuff, but probably not an album I'd come back to in the future.
It doesn't look like anything to me.
I liked this one! Reminiscent of The Who.
Yes, yes, yes! I'm very surprised I didn't come across this album in high school/college -- younger me would have loved it (and honestly needed it). Inject this anti-patriarchal rage into my veeeeiiiiins
Not my jam in any way
Whatever this was, I didn't like it.
Enjoyable!
This was fine - would not be my go-to jam but okay for an hour or so.
I liked this one! Funny, smart songwriting; cohesive vibe across the album without letting every song sound the same.
Did not dislike it as much as I expected to, but probably also wouldn't come back to it for a re-listen.
Good old-school punk vibes!
I liked this one! Interesting/pretty songwriting with a ‘90s vibe.
I liked it! Good instrumental jams for a rainy morning.
Elvis is in the building! I really enjoyed this album -- I hadn't heard any of these Elvis songs before, so it was a new experience for me, and I really dig the early 1960s rhythms, horns, vocals, etc.
Enjoyable 1970s vibes. I hadn't heard much Tom Petty before and he has such a unique voice!
I liked this one -- very good late Bowie vibes.
Another bleak, elegant Leonard Cohen album.
A combo of Talking Heads and Blondie - I liked it!
I liked this one -- good 1980s synth vibes, some interesting/political lyrics, and a cohesive sound across the album without being repetitive.
Not my jam.
It was fine! Not usually my kind of jam, but it was interesting and upbeat, and something new for me to be exposed to.
This was okay -- nothing I'd play again, but I liked the sound and the vibe.
Nope! Don't like that!
I liked this one a lot! Cool 1970s vibes.
I actually liked this more than I expected to, but it's still not something I'd choose to put on just to listen to for the hell of it.
Some of these songs don't know when to be over, and I could do without the God/Jesus content. But I like the general sound -- definitely shades of the Beatles in there combined with his own cool 1970s thing.
Nothing special - not even sure why it made the 1001 list.
Hm! Interesting. I had never heard of this band and hadn't heard any of the music on this album. It's an interesting mix of 80s vibes and singer/songwriter stuff -- I liked it, but it might not seem like a cohesive album to some folks.
I liked how earnest this album was! Kind of a mix between the Beatles, Tom Petty, the Beach Boys -- I had never heard of this group and I enjoyed this album.
I love this old school swing vibe!! Louis Prima also takes me back to a particular time in my life that I have fond memories of. This was a great way to start a Friday. :)
I really enjoyed this album because I didn't really know what it was -- what genre is this, even? It's not quite singer-songwriter, it's not quite pop, but I liked it. Put the lime in the coconut!
No thank you! I can see how this is objectively a good/seminal album, but it's just not for me.
YES CHEF! I loved every single song on this album. It made me both happy (for the musical style, instrumentation, and vibes) and sad (for the lyrics and stories of the songs). I knew some of the songs already but not others, and I definitely plan to come back to this album.
It was fine, I guess, but it just didn't really click for me.
<giant eye roll>
Good old Bob Marley! Some perennial favorites on this one but also some that were new to me.
I mean, it was fine -- but didn't hit me hard in the sounds or the words.
I like the blend of 1970's vibes and New Wave sounds -- I knew some of these songs already but not all of them, so it was an interesting listen.
This was interesting! Not anything I would have chosen to listen to on my own, but was some relatively neat background/instrumental music that I enjoyed.
I mean, yeah, fine. Radiohead has never been my bag.
I don't like my music to be scary!
No thanks. Not my jam.
Another album that's just not my jam. I can appreciate that it has a significant place in the heavy metal genre but I just didn't enjoy listening to it.
Having had several hard rock / heavy metal albums in a row now...I'm over it. Hopefully this is the last one for a while!
For a non-jazz person such as myself, this was actually okay! I can see why it's such a staple of the genre.
I liked this! Like ambient music but dialed up to 11.
Exactly what I would have thought a full a-ha album would sound like, solely based on my knowledge of Take on Me.
Still what I would consider heavy metal, but at least not scary heavy metal
I like the blend of 1950s/60s sound combined with early rock and roll. Cool groove.
An interesting 1970s vibe - I liked it!
It was okay - nothing special to me.
I enjoyed this one! Good old country / Americana feel; I hadn't heard of this artist before but I liked the album a lot.
Like if Taylor Swift and Regina Spektor had a baby
Musically and rhythmically interesting; lyrically unpleasant
I liked this! Good classic, rustic America feel to it.
Thanks, I hate it
Like a jam band...but also not? I don't know. It was fine.
I liked this! Pretty different than anything I've heard before.
Good old CSN! I knew some of these but most were new to me. This is the kind of late '60s / early '70s music I like.
Man, I love this! The sound, the story songs, the revolutionary-ness of Johnny Cash playing a concert at a prison -- all excellent.
Fine, but nothing I'll come back to.
Kind of a trip. Can't decide if good trip or bad trip.
Very Monkees, very Mamas and the Papas, very '60s hippie pop vibe.
It's really wild how many genres / musical styles are represented here -- the album is really long but worth it!
I liked this one! Interesting vibes and cool stuff being done on the piano.
We stan a rock band playing with a symphony orchestra!
Melancholy, sad, hurt my heart in a good way.
This album loves the smell of its own farts.
It was fine -- about what I'd expect from an Elliott Smith album.
Very of the early 2000s -- high school me would have enjoyed this.
I liked this one for the cultural artifact-ness of it all — I really enjoyed how the live recording evokes the mood, the event, the audience, the banter, etc. It very much captures its time and place and I liked that very much. The music itself I could take or leave…!
I don't understand why anyone would listen to this voluntarily
Absolutely insufferable
I don't understand why anyone would voluntarily listen to this album
Meh. It was fine; I liked some of the quieter/more instrumental stuff but overall would give this one a pass
Meh. It was fine but not anything earth-shattering for me
Look, I know Van Morrison is a shitty person, but this music reminds me so much of my childhood -- I love his voice, the piano, the horns, the strings, all of it.
No thank you
It was fine - I see how this album meant a lot to a lot of people and why it won a Pulitzer. It's still not my jam but I'm glad it exists
Mehhhhh
Queen is a classic for a reason! I enjoyed this album and hadn't heard most of the songs on it before.
This didn't hit for me
Nothing about this album really grabbed me. It was fine, I guess, but it felt like being at a spa run by Radiohead.
Bops all the way down! This isn't my favorite Bowie era but the album is still solid as hell.
::drools:: '90s rocker girls all day every day! I knew about half these songs already but took a deeper listen to the lyrics, and some were new to me (I particularly liked "Not the Doctor"). Putting this one in the same category as the man-hating anti-patriarchy Liz Phair type stuff that I love.
A nice surprise! I liked the grungy, dive bar, British punk/ska vibe of this album.
This man cannot sing and it will never not drive me crazy.
I really liked this one! In the vein of Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, etc. Made some good endorphins. :)
It was fine, but didn't get me jazzed to listen to more Neil Young or anything.
[insert Selina Meyer WTF GIF from Veep]
Beautiful music to slit your wrists to
I don't even know, man
A fun, grungy, 1960s garage sound - probably would not listen again but was enjoyable
I just am not a Jimi Hendrix gal. Sorry.
I am sorry but I simply cannot take this music seriously
B-52s meets Gin Blossoms meets Beach Boys? Somehow it works!
No thank you
Sure - classic 1970s rock can't be wrong. I especially liked "Jamie's Cryin'," which I hadn't heard before.
Can't go wrong with Bowie!
Some Temptations material I hadn't heard before! Mostly bops, one or two weird ones.
I like the lead singer's voice. Kind of an odd choice for track #1 - not a banger or a bop, as the kids say - but overall an interesting album and rather undefinable in terms of genre.
I enjoyed the Afrobeat vibe of this album even if Femi Kati is a nepo baby
Every single one of these songs sounded exactly the same and I am not here for it
🎉🎉 In this house we listen to Taylor’s Version, but we’ll make an exception for 1001 Albums. This is one of those albums that’s 1) full of bangers 2) lyrically awesome and 3) reminiscent of a very specific and important time in my life. Love it, top to bottom.
Pretty chill bossa nova background music! I enjoyed it.
If The Postal Service grew up and married Devotchka and was best friends with Moby and Architecture in Helsinki
I had only ever heard Come On Eileen by this band, which I love, so I'm not surprised that I really enjoyed this album! I love the incorporation of the horns - almost every song on this album is a bop.
I enjoyed the bops like "You Be Illin" and "It's Tricky" but the rest of this album was just not to my liking. To each their own!
Good, solid, classic work from the Smiths.
Born to Run might genuinely be the best song of all time
I can appreciate how fans of this genre would really enjoy this album, but that’s just not me.
This was just like listening to an hour of vaguely melodic noise
This was nice to have on while doing some morning chores on a gray day. Probably comes closest to "would relisten" out of all the hip hop/rap albums I've had through 1001 Albums so far.
This album felt like taking a sedative, in a good way
Two Nick Drake albums in a row! My previous assessment holds - this music feels like being on sedatives
Middle school nostalgia vibes. I can see why the first three songs are the only ones that they put on the NOW! albums.
What in the world did I just listen to
Such a wonderfully nostalgic soft spot for Joan Armatrading -- more music from my childhood.
Definitely some shades of Beatles in here - "The Long and Winding Road" / "How?", "Honey Pie" / "Crippled Inside", a reference to Sgt. Pepper, etc. Interesting choices for a man who famously didn't want anything to do with the Beatles anymore.
I mean, who doesn't love Blister in the Sun? Wish the whole album were like that, but unfortunately it's not -- I guess I can see some proto-Mountain Goats here, but I just don't love when it seems like the lead singer of a band is bad on purpose.
Shades of Huey Lewis and the News, a little bit of Talking Heads, Pet Shop Boys, etc. Cool early '80s vibes.
This man was HORNY!
Not really sure what to make of this one. I didn't dislike it, I guess, but I certainly didn't like it either.
Led Zeppelin are classic for a reason! This is the kind of music we listen to around the house anyway -- I enjoyed this album. :)
Songs like poems -- very much of the 1960s. Kind of a sad, melancholy album.
Nice to have on as background music for doing chores and cleaning up. As I'm not a big tango fan it was hard for me to see what makes this album stand out as a 1001er.
I liked this one! Very much in the vein of the fun 1970s rock we listen to around the house.
Shades of the Police and Mana. I feel like I have this bias against U2 for being smarmy but I can totally see how this was a major rock album in the early 1980s.
I don't know why this reminds me of Godspell / Jesus Christ Superstar?? Piano, flute, electric guitar, early '70s vibes, religious content...
If this album existed in a vacuum, sure, I'm into it -- I particularly like the piano/Americana tracks (vs electric guitar/weird stuff). But knowing what I know about how weird Jack White is and given the terrible show of his I went to...meh.
Interesting ambient (?) music - not even really sure what you'd call this genre. Of course I knew 'Sexy Boy' from 10 Things I Hate About You but the rest was new to me. Not an unpleasant listen!
YES, QUEEN. Epic album, epic voice, epic woman.
I love the B-52s for how weird and kitschy and unselfconscious they are. Bops up and down this album.
Not a whole lot to say about this album - it was fine. I liked that it didn't really fit into a particular genre.
Who doesn't love Oye Como Va? I hadn't heard any of the other songs on this album, though, and I enjoyed them -- cool beats, neat piano parts.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, is that you? I loved the upbeat vibes of this album and would definitely re-listen.
I don't think this album was written with me in mind. It's not the worst thing I've ever listened to but I didn't quite know what to make of it.
Rock star! I enjoyed this album and I was surprised to -- I appreciate how revolutionary this music and this artist would have been at the time. I also have a little nostalgic spot for the extreme '80s-ness of this album, complete with MIDI. :)
Got to listen to this one on vinyl since it's already in our collection! Classic album, good college nostalgia vibes, great sound.
Some classics on here -- solid 1970s rock vibes.
A neat punk/rock sound from the 70s.
I dig this album! Not usually the kind of thing I would pick up to listen to but I like the smooth vibes and vocals.
I enjoy this kind of jazz - just something nice and low-key to have on in the background, not anything pretentious or showy or too "jazzed up."
Not into this
Tracy Chapman's music hurts my heart in the best way.
Not unenjoyable! I like the alternative vibe they have going on.
I mean, yes, sure? Fine to have on in the background, very shoegaze/ambient.
Always down for some Pet Shop Boys!
It's so interesting to hear where exactly in time an album was located and who the band's contemporary influences must have been (or who they must have influenced later on). In this album I hear the Beatles, Aerosmith, Elvis, etc -- good early 1970s vibes.
Sure, I guess. Not anything I would come back to, but it's fine.
"I see something of myself in everyone." <3
I very much like this mix of folk, indie, Americana, etc -- and some beautiful harmonies going on throughout this album as well.
Who doesn't like Aretha?!
Most of this George Michael content was new to me -- I really enjoyed it!
Remind me to add this album to my roster of things I can do to mediate anxiety.
I like "Glamour Boys" but could take or leave the rest of the album
This is an album full of screaming and that little fucking organ plinking away. It's not NOT good, but it's also not my favorite thing to listen to.
Good old Talking Heads <3
I liked this one! Kind of a mix between Joan Armatrading and the early 1990s R&B that I'm familiar with. Also reminded me of the kind of thing my mom might like. :)
Just crying my face off listening to this album. Five stars.
Eh. Too much 1960s hippie weirdness for me, and that's saying something!
My whole brain just yelled NO NO NO NO NO for the duration of this album
Who doesn't love the Who? I hadn't heard a live album of theirs before and enjoyed this one.
I did like that not every song on this album sounded the same -- as far as hip-hop goes for me, a decent album to have on in the morning for breakfast and chores.
Not a particularly pleasant listen but I can see myself having been into it as an angsty teen
This is my kind of album! Sad indie boy makes good acoustic music. <3
Good music, shitty person.
Yes please!
Sure, I could be into this -- I liked the incorporation of found audio
Okay! Classic Bollywood vibes -- I think this is the first soundtrack that I've come across on the 1001 list.
Grunge daddies!
Not my cup of tea, but I can see the value and artistry in this album
I'm not sure if I'd give this one another listen, but it was enjoyable while I was listening to it
Sure! I like world music as much as the next guy
Well that was unpleasant
Welp. This, from the Wikipedia article, should tell you all you need to know about how I feel about this album -- "Dr. Octagon is an extraterrestrial surgeon from Jupiter who uses space technology and primitive tools to perform medical procedures on his patients, some of whom die as he conducts his rounds, while others are murdered by his careless, barbaric acts. Octagon also practices as an orthopaedic gynaecologist and seduces and engages in sexual intercourse with his female patients and nurses." Also this album is obsessed with the word "rectum"
Who doesn't like Marvin Gaye?
Some bangers on this album, like 'Girls' and 'Fight for Your Right,' but otherwise this just isn't my jam.
Hooked from the first ten seconds of the first song. Sweet voice, sweet lyrics, sweet fiddle. Would absolutely listen again.
World music always nice to listen to
Yeah, it's fine. I like it more than a lot of the other rap albums I've listened to on here so far, but I still don't think I'd put it on just to listen to for fun.
I mean, fine for what it is -- essentially a jam album. It's just not MY jam.
As usual, jazz isn't my thing, but I don't hate it
Very Bryn Mawr vibes <3
The one good thing I can say for this album was that it was easy to tune out
Meh
Love me some ELO! And Mr. Blue Sky is one of the happiest songs ever written. :)
Jazz, as usual, is not my jam but I can see how others appreciate it :)
I can appreciate a vocal cover album!
Aaaaargh
I mean, it's Rod Stewart
