Album Summary

1977 is the debut studio album by Northern Irish rock band Ash. It was released on 6 May 1996 by Home Grown and Infectious Records, with whom the band had signed following the release of several demo tapes. Ash released the mini-album Trailer in 1994, and followed it with three singles "Kung Fu", "Girl from Mars", and "Angel Interceptor", all of which would reappear on 1977. Ash recorded their debut album with producer Owen Morris at Rockfield Studios in Wales in early 1996. Described as a Britpop, power pop and garage rock album, 1977 drew comparisons to the Buzzcocks, Dinosaur Jr., and Sonic Youth. Preceded by the album's fourth single "Goldfinger" in April 1996, the band embarked on tours of the United Kingdom and Europe. "Oh Yeah" was released as the fifth single in June 1996, followed by tours of the United States, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. Ash ended the year with another US tour, as well as a US support slot for Weezer. They toured Europe and the UK, before their appearance at Glastonbury Festival. 1977 received generally positive reviews from music critics, who praised the album's "catchy" nature. The album peaked at number one in the UK, as well as reaching the top 40 in Australia, Finland, New Zealand, Norway, and Switzerland. "Kung Fu", "Girl from Mars", "Angel Interceptor", "Goldfinger", and "Oh Yeah" all charted on the UK Singles Chart, with "Goldfinger" reaching the highest position at number five. 1977 appeared on several UK publications' best-of-the-year album lists, by the likes of Kerrang!, NME, and Melody Maker, among others. The album would later be certified platinum in the UK.

Très authentique et brut

Pretty good

Goldfinger, Girl from Mars, and Oh Yeah were my fav songs. Overall the album had a pretty good very 90s sound. Not sure what 1977 references. Didn’t love the washed out sound permeating through all the tracks, the singers voice wasn’t super unique, and some of the songs had a “Bowling for Soup” sound. Liked some of the atmospheric sound effects like on Darkside Lightside but would’ve liked heavier metal and drums throughout, though I appreciate the apparent Star Wars references.

Stylistically this falls very much in the vibe I enjoy, but I feel the album is just a bit long. If it was 30-40min it would be great, but at 50 it just drags.

So cool. Punky in a very real authentic way as well as kind of cheesy pop! Tracks like kung fu are such a lovely beautiful mess. I'm not totally sold on the strings.

Just an incredible string of mediocracy I'm on at the moment.

Ja dus gewoon niet zo m’n ding. Een beetje te heftige gitaren en toen ik vanochtend voor het eerst die muziek opzette dacht ik nopeeee.

For an album named 1977 made in 1996, this could've been much worse.

Semi-sophisticated musical arrangements met with very unsophisticated lyrics 2.5

Started strong - I liked the aggression, but it kinda petered out towards the end

I feel like I would've rocked hard w this one in high school

I gotta stop going into these random niche British albums with such a negative attitude There’s some surprisingly great variety on this one; I liked Girl from Mars a lot and can see why that’s their biggest hit. Let it Flow is also solid, just a well paced catchy song. Instrumentation is actually pretty great, not super polished but it just works great here. They have some great energy, and the album just kinda lands when it has to in general I think it takes a bit to find its footing, which I think is an huge flaw and can really affect your view on an album if you’re not having it; it recovers but if you’re having a bad day it can kinda hinder your enjoyment of the rest. While Girl on Mars is pretty solid, I don’t really love a lot of other songs on here. Also the vocals are fine, but you definitely get a little tired of them by the end I think I’ll go with a low 4 here, it’s far from bad but it’s got enough points against it to justify anything higher than like a 7/10. Hard to deny there’s some great stuff on here though

You can tell they knew their songwriting wasn't it because they slathered every track in an insane amount of distortion in an effort to make it sound better. Sometimes they try to rip of Nirvana, sometimes Oasis, but the end result is the same. It's got the stink of amateur all over it.

This came out during my freshman year of college. I was an indie rock sponge. I couldn’t get enough. If the record store had a new release from Touch and Go, Drag City or Merge Records, I’d buy it without even hearing it first. I recognize this album but I gotta say, back then (and until today) this artwork and logo is an automatic skip. The art is horrendous and the logo is more fitting for a jam band. I feel like these things are important to a band’s identity. Listening now, I’m not sure this would have made it in my collection if I’d heard it back then. There’s places where it sounds like The Lemonheads or Teenage Fanclub but my main issue is the music is all over the place. I feel like I’m listening to a 90’s Alt compilation. When you hear a Dinosaur Jr, Pavement, or Superchunk song, they are immediately recognizable. There are great tracks like Goldfinger and not so great tracks like Kung Fu.

I know quite a few songs already, and some songs are more bland. Still a good rock album. Favourites: Goldfinger, Oh Yeah and Girl From Mars

Mediocre '90s rock music. Nothing particularly bad, but nothing that makes this album stand out from the countless others from the same time period.

I defo listened but I can’t say I remember anything…

Really enjoyable album that mixes the sounds of the Buzzcocks, Ramones, Dinosaur Jr. and a few other guitar pop & punk bands. They were so young when this came out too. Possibly slightly too long, I think remove two of the weaker tracks and leave it with those singles Kung Fu, Girl from Mars, Angel Interceptor, Oh Girl and Goldfinger and a few others and that's a cracking 5 star album. As it is bubbling just under at 4 stars.

3.9. Sounds like the early 90s

holy album cover I like the insttumetnals but not the guys voice

Not for me

bruh ive heard this sound a million times

I thought this was gonna be Britpop, but it was bubblegum grunge and very fun and catchy

If this had been released in 1977, it would have been notable. It was not. It is not.

This was fine for what it was. But it was in no way noteworthy or necessary for mandatory listening.

It's fine.

Girl From Mars

better than I thought it would be. 3/5.

Power bubblegum or something. Couple of excellent tracks, bit shallow beyond that. Sounds like it should be more up my street than it actually is.

Run of the mill 90s rock

Fellow countrymen. Excellent blend of styles. First song does sound like shot by both sides. Really enjoyed this

just a mediocre weezer lite album. there's this thom yorke interview where he talks about how all american inspired music at that time just ended up sounding like static and i agree.

non male, vibe abbastanza alla sonic youth

Never heard of this band before listening. Overall, good sound, not a fan of the lead singer but has his moments. 1.) Lose Control: They have almost a Foo Fighters sound. The mixing between vocals and instruments is a little off, should've had vocals come through a bit more. Good energy to this song. 2.) Goldfinger: Has the late 90s/early 2000s pop rock sound. Didn't really get this song. Just a guy waiting for his girlfriend to come back after leaving in the middle of the night. I can't make the connection to the title. 3.) Girls From Mars: Its a fine song but wasn't liking the vocals on this one. Interesting concept but if he didn't say the girl was from Mars, then you wouldn't have known. Its probably a metaphor for a long-distance relationship but I thought it would be cooler and weirder to have an interplanetary love song. 4.) I'd Give You Anything: I would skip this song. It was very repetitive in melody and was another one where the instruments drown out the vocals so it doesn't help the repetitiveness. 5.) Gone the Dream: I like the addition of violins to this song, adds to the dreaming effect. Nice and easy guitar solo to fit the theme. Don't mind this song. 6.) Kung Fu: With different lyrics and theme, I would like this song. It has a nice pop-punk sound to it. But it has this weird thing where they reference random things, like the 90s film The Karate Kid, which uses Karate instead of Kung Fu since they both originate in different countries and cultures. 7.) Oh Yeah: This song made me realize that I'm not a fan of the lead singer's voice. He's good in some styles but not in a lot that require him to lead. This song feels awkward, like he's trying to serenade someone who gave him a restraining order. 8.) Let It Flow: Not feeling this song. The lyrics are too simple and repetitive, making me lose interest. 9.) Innocent Smile: They have had some interesting sounds in the beginning of songs so far, but I wish they incorporated them more throughout the songs. I do like this one, has a good alt-rock sound. has a cool guitar riff in the background. Guitar solo near the end was too much, could've been useful if they used it as a transition for a key or time signature change. 10.) Angel Interceptor: Not a bad song, has a different sound then their other love songs which I appreciate. 11.) Lost in You: A bit too slow for me. Its another one of their love song. 12.) Darkside Lightside: Another example of the lead singer's vocals not matching the instruments. I like the sound and effects they do on this one. I do feel like this song encapsulates the sound of all the songs on the album, which is a good way to end an album.

Nothing notable

I vaguely remember New Zealand getting real horny for this one.

Hell yeah, good old regular 90's Alternative Rock. There's a ton of albums like this on here but I don't really mind. Alternative from this era just seems to blend everything together, from Shoegaze to Grunge to Noise Rock. It's been a few hours and I can't really remember any song, but I liked this nonetheless. Starts off powerful from the getgo.

Hadn't heard this and didn't think I'd like it based on the reviews and description. I was pleasantly surprised! Great songs, great production. The reviews have many comparisons to Weezer but I think I like this a bit better. Its fun but less silly sounding than Weezer. I always had a hard time taking Weezer seriously (I've only ever heard the blue album).

Nothing special here. Some dinosaur jr vibes but not really close.

General 90s alt/punk rock album. Ok to listen to if you're into that sort of thing, but not an album for the every day person.

Whem the hype was over we are left with this uninspired and tiresome music. Boring.

For me, this is a pretty solid album. All of it really works well and it has a nice flow to it. I think it comes out of the gate, really strong with the opener and it maintains a good vibe all the way through. I did misread when this album was produced. I thought it said 1967, and I was very impressed by how modern this album sounded. Maybe I should clued in a bit in the fact that it sounded like 90s, alt-rock/grunge. Realistically, should I give this album as high a rating as I'm going to? Probably not. But it really worked for me and I really like this kind of music. It just has a way of really sticking with me. Fav Track: Angel Interceptor

Pretty good!

Album 200! Dull.

A bland, unremarkable album, unfortunately.

- The Good: Surprisingly hardcore at moments? Cool guitar distortion on "Lose Control" and "Innocent Smile." Also all for sampling TIE fighter sound effects - The Bad: Wheeler's sickly sweet voice combined with some rather shallow teen lyrics do not mesh well with the rest of the sound. "Lost in You" is grossly saccharine. - The Ugly: "Kung Fu" feels racist?

doesnt really do anything or belong on the list, not offensive or bad just dont need to listen before i die

Fun album, with some great riffs throughout. It’s still really catchy, and makes for an enjoyable listen. Not the most original ever, but fun nonetheless.

Good 90s rock

Don't dig the dissonant vocals. Otherwise a decent album that is probably three stars, even though I enjoy it more than a lot of the dross on this list.

Solid grungey rock Fave track: I'd Give You Anything

The album is called 1977, but it came out in 1996. Curious. I have just learned from one of the reviews of this album that the blue album by Weezer is not included in this list. What. The. Fuck. 3/5

It starts with the sound of a Tie Fighter and is from my youth so why wouldn’t I like it. Unfortunately time has left it a bit period generic sounding but it’s not one I’d turn off.

In my opinion, this album doesn't fit neatly into the “Britpop” category. Technically, Ash is a British '90s band, but to me, their sound is clearly post-grunge - quite comparable to the Foo Fighters. Since I’ve reviewed a few similar albums recently, I find it difficult to write anything substantially new here. “1977” is a good listen; whether it’s essential, though, isn’t entirely clear to me. 3.5 stars. Since my reviews of ’90s albums tend to be on the low side, I’m rounding up in this case.

Great 90’s Irish rock 🤘

Rocking enough that I listened to its two or three times. But honestly I don't remember any of it the next day

This is what the Stone Roses should've became. Sorta amazed at how good this is. It's like a blend of so many of my favorite sounds from this time but never does it feel like any musical toes are being stepped on. I did listen to this without the bonus track but from what I'm reading...that one is a bit unnecessary.

Some generic Brit alternative music. Top tracks: "Girl from Mars," "Lost in You" This is also to spite Brown who gave 'Funeral' one star.

Scott music as fuck, frankly. replacement level mid-90s quasi punk. To me, it sounds like early Foo Fighters mixed with Lit and Weezer. Catchy, guitar-driven, kinda fun. Heard it once, I'm good now, thanks, I won't remember this past this listen.

--Lose Control...powerful and catchy. strong opener --Goldfinger...radio-friendly unit shifter. lacks the energy of "Lose Control" --Girl from Mars...fun but a little too cheesy --I'd Give You Anything...boilerplate power chord stuff --Gone the Dream...they switch things up a bit. this is more of a Wall of Sound power ballad. a bit cheesy again but the string arrangement is nice --Kung Fu...fun pop punk --Oh Yeah...the strings are back. I like strings but this feels overproduced --Let It Flow...see "Goldfinger" --Innocent Smile...Mark Hamilton has two songwriting credits on this LP and so far they're the strongest tracks. nothing too flashy, just strong rock 'n' roll --Angel Interceptor...more solid pop punk --Lost in You...power ballad. not sure I needed a power ballad from these guys --Darkside Lightside...they follow up their most cloying track with their heaviest. headbanger --Sick Party...gross, guys

I love this album and have since it came out.

Britpop, power-pop, pop punk, distortion. This record HAD. IT. ALL. 1977 by the north irish band ash it's one of the most acclaimed 90's alternative records, producing 5 singles including the memorable "Goldfinger" with a sound that to many people resembles to bands like Dinosaur Jr, Buzzcocks, and Sonic Youth. The album actually peaked #1 in the UK and reached the top 40 in 7 countries. All of these 5 Singles entered the UK Singles Chart. 1977 refers to the year Star Wars was premiered and also, to the year where Tim Wheeler and Mark Hamilton were born. From the opener "Lose Control", a punk rock song, to the "Girl From Mars" wall of guitars (with Tim Wheeler singing almost like J. Mascis from Dinosaur Jr. Themsleves) including "I'd Give you Anything" which resembles to N.I.B by Black Sabbath and a close sound to bands like The Stooges, the truth is the icing of the cake it's Goldfinger, the previous track with a sound that it's pretty much inspired by Teenage Fanclub and the lyrics detailing a man wanting to buy drugs, almost remarking the whole spirit of the 90's. Ranked #417 by NME in the 500 greatest albums of all time poll and included by Alternative Press in the list of "Best Punk albums of 1996" this one is an album that you MUST listen if you wanna be in touch with Alternative Rock as a genre.

Decent rock album. Production-wise, sounded newer than it is. I liked it.4/5

Tiene algunas canciones que están bien, pero otras no se salvan...

British Weezer with TIE fighters 3.5/5

Never heard of these guys but as usual they appear to be huge in Britain and unknown here in the US. Definitely the kind of music I would have listened to in 1995 but then looked back and had no use for. Definitely a lot better than brit pop but not so much better that they are able to break out of the brit pop 3-star purgatory.

So, this band opened for Weezer when I saw them on the Pinkerton tour. I don’t really remember their set all that much except I’m pretty sure I saw Brian Bell wandering around in the crowd. He noticed that people were starting to notice him and he skedaddled backstage. Also, I’ve been a big fan of the Angus soundtrack since that movie came out, and Ash’s song Kung Fu shows up on that. So, I’ve had a deep and abiding love for that song for a while. For those two reasons, I really should’ve listened to this record before now. Im glad it popped up (although it does beggar belief that Ash shows up on this list, but there’s no Weezer, and band who was something of a cultural rock phenomenon from about 94-98, and who has remained at least somewhat relevant since…really? No Blue record and Pinkerton? Really? That in of itself points to the reality that absolute know nothings compiled this list). Back to my point, this is a pretty fun record. Not entirely sure why it’s here, but I like that it is and I’ll probably spin it more than once. 8/10

Proper Joncore, IYKYK Girl from Mars is a nice heavy choon that I know well, rest is all new to me, lovely and noisy, verging into Sonic Youth territory, but longer than id like in one sitting for this sort of thing

Was that a freaking tie fighter at the beginning?? Felt very angsty and rebellious listening to this, don’t really feel like this went anywhere and got a little samey by the end 3

A very special album from my teenage years…came to me via a mix tape. Bought this album on the Champs Elysees at the virgin mega store.

This was good. There's even a few songs I could see my adding to playlists. But this is not 1001 material (sorry Carly, I suspect you might love this)

If I had heard it at the time, I would have maybe liked it more. I enjoyed the sound so I will probably revisit to evaluate.

Standouts Lose Control Angel Interceptor

I've never heard of this album or artist. I listened to this a few times and I initially had a couple of songs where I was like "eh, maybe that's ok" but on subsequent listens I was like "nah, I don't need to hear that again". During the 3rd listen I couldn't wait to turn it off and didn't make it all the way through. It all feels kind of derivative musically and vocally and doesn't really have anything interesting to say lyrically. It kinda just happened and never once grabbed me. Liked songs on Spotify: 0/12 Rating: 1/5 (should be zero)

*1996. Irish pop rock. *I listened to these like 2.5 times through on a long drive - I can't remember a single song I heard, but it was pleasant enough. *Typical chill 90s Brit rock. I would listen to this again. Probably a 3.5, but feeling generous, so 4 it is. RATING - 7/10

i kinda really like this album. they sound like a grungier weezer with all the same ideas highlights: goldfinger girl from mars angel interceptor lost in you

A band I’ve never heard of. Pretty decent — 3.5 rounded down.

C'était plutôt sympathique. Du pop rock qui se paye le luxe d'être un peu énervé et un peu plus énergique que la moyenne. C'est pas un album sur lequel j'aurais très envie de revenir, mais je n'ai rien de négatif à dire à son sujet.

Vocals were really weak, but I enjoyed everything else

Dette runget sikkert høyt fra et og annet tenåringsrom på nittitallet.

Good, catchy but too pop.

Just mid rock I didn’t really enjoy any of the songs more than another because they are all so similar sounding.

Lead singer is Dinosaur Jr-esque. Catchy album, good hooks, a little distortion. College alternative with a touch of grunge

Bien, entretenido pero tampoco nada espectacular. Se deja escuchar.

Good 3/5

Dobar provod.

Britpop is already boring, this takes it to a whole new level of drudgery

Es como estilo Panda, no me gusta

I liked 'Goldfinger' and the album overall. For me though it's in the category of also-ran 90s indie rock that wasn't quite heavy enough for Kerrang but a bit too heavy for the mainstream. I knew Ash back into the day but was never really into them and that remains my official position.

really liked girl from Mars but not a lot else going on on this album and i love schlocky 90s indie college rock stuff. not sure what this is really doing here but I'll give 3 stars because it was enjoyable enough and new to me

Feels like a Weezer rip off

This is very average. I don't hate it by any means, but I don't see how it fits on this list.

Found this so dull

Another band I'd never heard of. It was decent, but unmemorable. Lots of repetition, but a nice hard rocking sound.
