Reviews (page 3 of 7)
A strong collection of pop songs neatly disguised in a cloud of J Masic-esque distorted guitars. A great rock record that is just slightly too long.
This was a surprising find, not gonna lie. We have here a well-done late-90s garage-rock album that takes the good elements of acts like Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth with an Irish tint. 1977 is certainly good in the latter third, from the ruckus buildup and breakdown towards the end of "Innocent Smile", to the ending guitar solo of "Angel Interceptor", the surprisingly good ballad "Lost in You", and that bombastic closer "Darkside Lightside". It may be a product of its time, but like with Green Day's Dookie, this album is a good musical representation of that era. Give it a shot.
Smashing Pumpkins by way of the Sex Pistols??? Definably not Britpop. One of the better finds from this list for my style actually. It's hard and complex and dark and catchy as all hell.
And just as I thought I was getting sick of Britpop, here's one that leans way more into garage rock and pop punk (Britpop punk?), and, da,mn, I just think this shit rocks. 50 is a little long, yeah, but I had my fun with this, so I can't complain too much. Or really have much to say other than what I just did. "Girls From Mars" reminded me a lot of Weezer. I'm not the only one, right?
Pretty damn good slice of a bunch of rock genres.
Great album, a real find
This record is majorly nostalgic for me. I happened to find “Goldfinger” on a British magazine cd sampler during a family vacation and liked it enough to go by the record which I found to be a cool and charming mix of fuzzy hard rock and cheekiness, like an Irish Foo Fighters. Unfortunately their subsequent work eschewed the fuzz and what was left over was far less charming or cool. Anyway I enjoyed listening to this one again after so many (at least 20!) years.
Oh Yeah. Excellent at times (who could not love Girl From Mars?!). I think they would be an amazing live experience - punky vibes abound. Kung Fu - I can see myself going bonkers to this 🤣 A few samey sounding tracks loses a star. But, on the whole, a smashing album.
Got to love Ash :) Energy, cool guitars, powerful drums and great tunes. Tim Wheeler wrote 'Girl From Mars' when he was 16, at 18 it was a hit and they were on Top of The Pops. When this album was released he was only 19. The first 3 tracks are fantastic! 'Lose Control' is blistering, what a start to a debut album. Blasting it out makes me feel more alive, young again. It's all good stuff, 'Oh Yeah' is another highlight, but they can't possibly keep the momentum going for nearly an hour. Cut to 40 minutes it could have been a 5 ⭐️ album but it fades a bit towards the end. Good closing track though and a solid 4 stars, how could anyone give less?
Delightful synthesis of grunge and britpop. Sounds a mix of Oasis, Nirvana and Green Day. Opening with the sound of a Tie fighter is worth the rating alone!
Vocals were a bit bland but the album is easy to listen to and songs are strong.
extremt bra, en stark fyra. skulle varit en eller två låtar kortare så hade det varit en femma.
Felt like playing a Tony Hawk game in the early 2000s
Great album. Still stands up pretty well in my opinion.
Good
Megahit Oh Yeah. Me ha soprendido.
Another reason why I love this project. This is my kind of my music from my day. How have I never heard of these guys? I loved it. I didn’t love the singer. I could do better, but they’ve got some nasty licks. I’ll keep listening.
Started off cool ig
Britpop i like dat
Enjoyed this. The grunge/punk guitar riffs mixed with more sugary vocals is very Weezer. I saw Ash support Weezer once, that combination makes perfect sense now. As a side note, why is The Blue Album not in this list?? Travesty Anyway the singles are good and the other tracks maintain the same energy. Only thing dropping a star is that it's a bit repetitive for a 50 minute album.
Good album overall. Last 2 mins at end of album was great.
Here’s a story: One of my favorite movies AND soundtracks of all time is Angus. Such an underrated movie and an almost perfect soundtrack. That’s where my sole knowledge of Ash comes from as their Kung Fu song was a track on that album. I never really thought I would come across what I assumed was a random band’s song on a mid-nineties soundtrack. But I’m so glad I did. This shit was great. I am going to go on an Ash deep dive for sure. 4.5
man, this album kinda holds up still. A couple bangers, a couple recognizable tracks.
This was a great debut of a young rock band looking for their sound. A definite 90's alternative UK rock album, where you hear influences from 90's punkrock (Lose Control) to britpop (Goldfinger), songs that were found in the attic of Iggy & The Stooges (I'd Give You Anything) or could have been covers of Fountains Of Wayne (Girl From Mars). All in all a very enjoyable experiences. But not one of the greats, despite what the British Music Press tried to make us believe in 1996
Probably would have loved this in Jr. High or Highschool. Interesting mix of soft vocals and hard guitars. Feels like a smattering of different styles of early 90's rock-pop.
This probably a 4.5. Such a freight train of an album, and a few superb singles. So much fun.
first listen such a great 90s vibe, fun guitar tone
This is actually pretty solid, nothing stands out as jaw droppingly great but nothing is truly terrible either, I enjoyed listening to it, wouldn't be offended if it was put back on
I've been in a groove with a lot of the recent offerings from this list. I'm rounding up, I guess, but I really liked the songwriting and vibe and sound of this band — another I don't believe I'd ever heard before. There was something familiar about them, and maybe that's because I heard a host of other bands right on the surface — Nirvana, Hole, Smashing Pumpkins, Local H, I was literally making a list as the record played. And that might typically not be sign of praise, but I was really enjoying these guys, in many cases more than I dig the bands I listed above. So, Ash. Pretty cool.
01) Lose Control - 8,0 02) Goldfinger - 7,5 03) Girl from Mars - 7,5 04) I'd Give You Anything - 8,0 05) Gone the Dream - 7,5 06) Kung Fu - 8,5 07) Oh Yeah - 8,5 08) Let It Flow - 7,5 09) Innocent Smile - 7,0 10) Angel Interceptor - 7,5 11) Lost in You - 7,0 12) Darkside Lightside - 7,5 TOTAL: 7,67 (77/100) I've heard of Ash, I know "Shining Light" and "There's a Star" and that's about it. I don't know this album or singles from it. It's a nice pop-rock album from a bunch of teenagers. Wish I had a band like this when I was 18. Kudos to them. There's nothing wrong with songs, they are good enough but the problem is I won't remember any of them after I finish listening to the album. Will add "Kung Fu" to my 1001 albums playlist. It's a 3,5 stars album that will receive 4 stars from generous me :-)
I'm biased by very fond memories of the beautiful 90s.
7/10
90s rock!
Enjoyable listen but probably something I'll forget about by tomorrow
I liked it a lot. A lot of varying styles in the songs. Sounded really nice!
Alt rock with an edge. Not bad.
Very surprised! Pretty darn good. I would listen to more of this band.
Haven't heard that for years.
I love Ash, they're genuinely one of my top 10 bands - and yet there's so many albums I haven't listened to all the way through. They're one of those bands that I've mostly only listened to on compilation albums. Maybe it's because their music is more about an overall feeling, and delivering a particular kind of hit. They're kind of specialists in that nostalgic, teenage fantasy realm, where it's always summer and there's possibility everywhere. When I want to feel good and rock out a bit I'll stick some Ash on and they'll always deliver. I don't need to go beyond the big hits and compilation songs, because they all rock and do exactly what they need to do. Anyway it's a stupid reason. This is a really good album, and I definitely enjoyed it. I'm so happy Ash made it onto this 1001 list, as I've always thought they were a bit underrated and should have been bigger. I've seen them a bunch of times live and they've always delivered big. I remember seeing them play a tent at Reading festival, and some 'cool kids' at the back were sneering at me for jumping up and down when Kung Fu came on. Come on man, it's Kung Fu, it's an absolute jam! I went straight down the front, jumped about with those lot and had the time of my life. Lots of brilliant songs on here. Some great melodies, choruses and riffs. Bits of the album fall off a little bit but overall it's another feel good treat.
Where has this album been all my life?
Really fits into that era's Zeitgeist and I can totally hear the Teenage Fanclub comparisons. Also, I'll always root for the Irish! I'd say the album is a bit front loaded, but really still enjoyed it.
I actively disliked these folks at the time, but a couple of decades of broadening my musical horizons (exploring noise rock and power pop, specifically) has given me enough context to appreciate what they're doing. "Girl From Mars" still irritates, however. Fave tracks - "Lose Control" is a great opener, and I woulda welcomed more noisier tracks like that. "Oh Yeah" is the best of the singles.
Kung fu is the funnest, I was definitely moving around with it. 1970s pop meets metal for sure. I like that they have the voice high in the mix with good chord changes. Great drummer. Teenage angst for the win!
This seems like it might've been an important album as I can hear similar sound in many bands since this came out (1996). The trio of "Innocent Smile," "Angel Interceptor," and "Lost In You"" make for a very enjoyable 15 minutes. Second, instrumental half of "Darkside Lightside" is excellent. Overall sound reminds me of Lit, Blink, and Weezer for no good, discernable reason. This album doesn't really seem worth ⭐⭐⭐⭐, but because I added five of the songs to my Spotify Liked Songs playlist, I'm giving it that rating. ____________________________ 🎧 Number of albums reviewed: 11 🎧 Number of albums left to review: 990 🎧 Number of albums that I found relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 3 🎧 Number of albums that I *might* include in mine later on: 6 🎧 Number of albums that I will certainly *not* include in mine: 2
- really enjoy the heavy guitars - big garage rock sound - some of it sounds like Weezer
cool
Enjoyed
An intriguing album from a genre I already know I enjoy. Unfortunately I was in another world while I was listening today and I don’t remember most of the album. It kind of faded in the background, which I need sometimes when I listen to music, so I can focus.
also December 29th, 2023 HL: "Lose Control", "Girl From Mars", "Gone the Dream", "Kung Fu", "Innocent Smile" The overblown guitars and strings are a match made in heaven and I'm not sure why At least good enough to make me forget about my water boiling for my instant noods
I can't believe how excited I am to see this album on this list. I'm familiar with the group only through the soundtrack to Angus, but they're input on that is fantastic. Also, it's nice to see something in this vein represented on the list. If Ash is here, why isn't Weezer?
Not bad. Not great either. Any album with a song like “Kung Fu” is going to get knocked down a star.
Surprisingly catchy. Wish there were some more aggressive songs like the first one.
Sounds like the soundtrack of a fun early oughts video game
Alt-rock that was better than what I expected. Cool.
I had never heard of Ash before this. I'm pleasantly surprised. I didn't know non-grunge heavy rock, complete with guitar solos, was still being made in the mid-90s. At least it didn't sound like grunge to me. I definitely heard a stolen riff from Black Sabbath's N.I.B. in the song I'd Give You Anything. Hope I'm not the only one who noticed it. Still enjoyed it. Favorite track: Probably Kung Fu - it's so catchy. Less fond of the lighter stuff on this album, but still 4/5 - might listen again.
Ash were never among my absolute favourite bands in the 90's but they were/are a lot of fun and can write a nice melancholy indie love sing too. A very enjoyable album that brings back lots of nice 90's memories.
I see what they did there. Starts with the sound of a tie fighter from star wars whizzing by, which debuted in, you guessed it 1977. I do think this is the most consistently worthwhile week of listens we've had since I joined. Had never heard these guys but I was immediately down. This is the first album I've added to "liked" before I finished it in a while. It just feels like something that fully understands what it is. The tracks all lead into each other really well, and there are some lush textures. Will need to revisit to evaluate the lyrics, the only one my brain latched on to for some reason was Kung Fu where they were encouraging Jackie Chan which seems fun. I guess in comparison to Dinosaur Jr or Sonic Youth you could say Ash maybe veers more into catchy hooks and poppier major chord structures with tracks like Angel Interceptor but tbh I prefer accessibility over dissonance in this context even if it's a bit saccharine at times.
Liked this more than some other britpop we’ve had, although maybe that’s because they’re not actually British and the style is more varied than britpop really enjoyed Girl From Mars. Let It Flow sounded exactly like Weezer. Light 4.
Never heard of them but honestly a solid listen.
Another band I haven't heard of. They sound like a mash up of Green Day meets Oasis. Since I like both of those bands, I enjoyed this. Good power pop punk. Melodic and noisy at the same time. I'd listen again.
Never heard of this band let alone this album. Reminds me of a mashup of Nirvana,, Black Sabbath and Green Day. Vocals were a little too low in the mix but I think the drums and crunchy guitar sounded great. I’d give you anything was a highlight for me. That guitar solo was awesome.
Pretty good actually
Lovely, simple power pop - I hadn’t come across Ash in decades I think - criminal. This record is packed to the brim with punchy memorable songs and didn’t get tedious even after repeated listens.
Very 90s.
Was actually really cool
Rocktastic
Pretty sweet riffage
Very well crafted
Nostalgia strong with this one, an album of such promise and excitement being, as I was, the same age as the band, born too in 1977 - the year Star Wars was released and hence the references throughout this album. So many rock solid hits - the singles are absolutely terrific - Goldfinger an incredible lovelorn tune with pulsating drive, into Girl From Mars - fast paced and bouncy - with Kung Fu, Oh Yeah, Angel Interceptor - they just keep coming. Album tracks are usually goofy extended rock jams with a few decent licks but nothing particularly exciting. I know metal heads who hate Ash for biting the style of others but I disagree - the accomplishment of such a young band - this their DEBUT - is really something. As an example of 90s BritPop / AltRock this is a fine example. It’s place on this list? My heart says five but my head says four.
Unexpectedly enjoyed. Never heard this album before.
Poptacular.
I actually quite enjoyed this. It did go downhill towards the end of the album but it came out of the gate swinging and at least tried to keep the momentum going. Way better than expected from a brit-rock album in the 90s. I mean, it has its moments of pure 90s cheese which cost it a star but, even with that, there's very little to complain about here.
There was a lot that I liked here with this one. Just huge walls of sound, great guitar tones, catchy melodies, and this feels like the exact album you'd think about with 90s UK alternative rock. Love that they had some britpop influences in there as well, which did make sense given this was the golden era for the genre. The first half in particular was a highlight, like Lose Control, Girl from Mars, and I'd Give You Anything. Only problem with this is it sort of blended together a little too much near the end, and there was little variation even with the specific genres used on the record itself. But its also immensely impressive given Hamilton and Wheeler were only 17 years old!
A brilliant piece of 1990s alternative. Catchy with noisy almost shoegazey riffs. This Northern Irish trio has something going for them and it is well worth your time.
4/5
4/5. A pretty catchy and fun rock album with a lot of influence from other bands that sometimes makes it sound unoriginal but very few times. There is definitely still some good songwriting here and hard not to like. There is young teenage energy here that you love to see on a debut.
Overlooked at the time by me. Solid record. Enjoyed it a lot.
Ash don't offer a super distinct musical identity on this album, but even so this is a good & cohesive collection of 90s alt rock tracks that aren't afraid to do something a little different. Would revisit. 3.5/5
Megahit Oh Yeah. Me ha soprendido.
They often feel like the forgotten British band on that ear, solid effort especially when one remembers how young they were when this came out.
Great band that surprised me a couple years ago with another release. But hearing this album was something else. Most songs have the kind of alt / pop / punk vibe. It’s a bit reminiscent of Weezer, but I think Ash has some more grit in their sound. Cool stuff with hooky melodies! 8 out of 10
A bit long and some of the songs drag but it is filled with very good to great power pop moments. I wish I first heard this in my teen years. 7/10
Such a cool sound. They manage to sound pop punk and soft rock at the same time. Such elegant vocals. Great rock album!
Pretty good listen. 4 stars! keep a good beat and don't relent.
A high powered vibe to listen to
It's been a while since one of these were from someone I never heard of and really blew me away. I would totally listen to this
Oh how I loved this album back in 1997, first year at uni, into all things Brit-adjacent. Some cracker tunes and some great guitar work.
Pretty good album with some real bangers. It slows down a bit from time to time, and I don't know if this really stands out in comparison to the other bands of this period, but it was still a good album. Favourite: Girl From Mars
God, I forgot how good this is
Rock
I’m excited to listen to Ash today! A few years ago, I listened to Free All Angels by them and was quite blown away (Burn Baby Burn is such a simple yet fun song to play on bass). It should be a fun day today if this album is anywhere near as fun as Free All Angels. Songs I already knew: Girl From Mars, Oh Yeah Favourites: Girl From Mars, Oh Yeah, Goldfinger, Angel Interceptor First of all, I had no idea that Girl From Mars and Oh Yeah were by Ash. Somehow I know both songs, yet had no idea who sang them. I loved most songs here on this album. I did think the last two songs were a little less interesting than the rest so may have been a bit better without them, but ten out of twelve tracks being great is pretty darn impressive. I love the feeling of chaos that can come into Ash songs at times. It can be fun pop-punk, then the guitar suddenly goes super distorted and the solos are messy and somewhat maniacal. It’s loads of fun.
I have never heard of this band before and the opening couple of tracks held a lot of promise. The album slowed down a bit towards the end. I want to give this one another listen.
This album was hot or cold for me. A lot of really great songs with some absolutely killer guitar and bass tones. Then just lots of songs I found very uninteresting. But the album was fun all around, so it registers as higher than average for that. Wouldn't be opposed to playing again and see how it grows on me.
Thought this was interesting. Surprised I'd never heard it before. Sorta reminded me of something like Frogstomp, but bit more diverse. Weird that it's labelled as Brit-pop. I mostly dislike that. 3.5/5
Never heard of them. How did this band get past me? Dig it.
1977 come l'anno di uscita di Star Wars e un rock-pop che promette bene. Molto interessante.
Youthful garage rock energy combined with very catchy pop melodies and choruses. Like the The Undertones for my generation. Great singles (checkout "Intergalactic 7s"), but I feel "Free All Angels" and the heavier "Meltdown" might be even better.
I appreciate the album opening with the sounds of TIE fighters. I've never heard of this band, but I am a sucker for the alt-rock of the 90's. Impressive to learn these kids were in their teens when this released. This is a lot better than the music my friend's were writing at that time. I recognize Girl From Mars from something. Maybe an episode of Gilmore Girls. I found it to be a fun album. This is honestly probably more of a 3, since there are so many more standout albums of the 90's. But the 90's teenager in me rates it as a 4.
Weird nostalgia, liked it.
Really good album with a great pace. Can’t believe this is my first listen of it
Never heard of them before but it's pretty good Britpop with less whiny vocals when compared with Oasis. High energy rock.
Solid
Any album called 1977 that starts with the sound of a TIE fighter is ok by me!
Rockia jossa on osittain pop punkkimaisia ja välillä jopa psykehtäviä vivahteita. Menevää kamaa
Great for playing air guitar to. And I remember 'Girl from Mars'. Pretty good all round.
The influence of earlier bands from Northern Ireland is clear, particularly that of the Buzzcocks. Garage rock of decent quality, and at least with vocals that don't harm the sound. Nothing that will be added to my personal playlists but a good album all the same.
banger
Megahit Oh Yeah. Me ha soprendido.
Вкусно, бодро, приятно. Выебонов в наличии, но чёт не удержал до конца, 4- (Пора возвращать привычку добавлять песни в личные плейлисты, память ужасная, так что интрушку послушайте, хз)
uncomplicated fun pop-punk anthems for upbeat road trips or trendy thrift stores. Album is a bit too long and I can't fault people for getting tired of it. 3.75/5
So I was not going to listen to this today. I’ve been getting burnt out on pre-80s albums I have no context for and I misread and thought this album came out in 1977. I know Ash because they’ve had a song or two in Gran Turismo. But that’s it. This music I am such a sucker for; the noisey pop-rock. Adding this album to my regular rotation.
I wasn't sure about this, but I really enjoyed it!
Bit too long but not bad for a bunch of teenagers at the time.
You know I'd not heard this for twenty years, owned by my partner. Girl From Mars was a banger always, but Kung Fu, Angel Interceptor, Oh Yeah are also absolutely brilliant too. I had this pigeonholed as mid-table Britpop but I'd put this in an Europa league place.
This was a really good album, I was actually shocked. Some sweet sweet rock and roll on this one. First half of the album is very solid. Girl from mars was good. The strength of this record is the 2nd half starting with Oh yeah. What a great song. Lost in you is one of the best songs I've heard from any of these albums. Darkside lightside is a fantastic closer. Kick ass album 7/10
Classics
This was a big deal back in 1996. Steve Lamacq was all over them. Ash were the young kids that could unite indie and pop. They pretty much pulled it off with 1977. What's great about this album is the pure pop: Goldfinger, Girl From Mars, Oh Yeah, Angel Interceptor - all timeless songs that would work just as well if they recorded by a boy band. Ash add an extra snark and snarl to the tunes. It's a pretty cool package when put together.
Super fun. Bristling power pop. Closing track was a banger.
What the fuck is up pac sun? Let it flow is a baby maker
Really great, strong rock music. Oasis-tinged, but so was most rock music during the time. I really enjoyed listening. I’ll definitely be sure to return to some tracks — “Girl From Mars” especially.
ugh. so good. it's got a garage/grunge sound that I really dig, the vocals are appropriate for the genre. It's playful and it rocks pretty hard.
Pretty rocking stuff, sounds pop-sludge-y in a good way.
8/10. Girl From Mars is a classic that I heard a lot growing up, but after over 500 of these albums, I'd worried that this album would be one of those that's just on the list because it had one good song. As such, this album was a pleasant surprise. It was a bit long, but I enjoyed it throughout and will likely come back to it.
Surprised that I kinda liked this; though it got long. 7/10
this sounds exactly like you would think it sounds. but not in a bad way
I know Girl from Mars and that's about it (maybe heard Kung Fu once or twice before). These guys are better than I thought. Lose Control was a great song to kick off the album - guitars really jam on this one. As far as its other singles, Angel Interceptor had similar energy to their two best known songs above (good tune) while Goldfinger and Oh Yeah not so much - still, pretty good (Oh Yeah has some nice Oasis-esque guitarwork in the last half of the song). I also liked I'd Give You Anything and Darkside Lightside (more cool guitarwork on both) and Lost in You (has that chill mid-90's alternative ballad sound). Not sure what makes them so unique to be on this list, but if you're a rocker there's a lot to like here. I definitely wanted to (and did) play the album multiple times. Checked out a few songs from other albums too - definitely a band I'll need to look more into.
The opening track “Lose Control” is a high intensity start to the album. Beginning with the sound of a Tie Fighter flying in the song just has an energy to it that you can’t help but bop up and down to. The song “Girl from Mars” sounded a bit familiar. I like the use of intense distortion in that song I think Wikipedia called it wall of guitars. Really enjoyed the interweaving guitars in “I’d Give you Anything.” The track “Innocent Smile” was the standout for me. Great tribute to Sonic Youth in the buildup there. The rest of the album had some good moments but there were a few forgettable tracks on here as well. I think it’s a solid 3 or maybe 3.5 since the tracks that really stood out makes me want to check out some of their other stuff.
Det här var jättebra! älskar gitarrer wroom wroom. och sorgliga låtar om kärlek mjao >.>>>>
90s nostalgia bias
I’ve herd girl from mars but than that nothing I do tend to learn towards Britpop albums though due to personal bias… Lose control has this awesome aggressive intro and the pre chorus bit was cool too, felt like a theme song for the band. Goldfinger is a great song works well bringing the pace down after lose control but it’s not super slow. I don’t hate girl from mars but it is awfully “ fuzzy” sounding and other than the fact that it’s got a catchy chorus how was this the band’s big hit. It does flow well into I’d give you anything, a ( very fuzzy) mess of a song (in a good way) and has a good guitar solo adding an extra guitar. Gone the dream is much nicer sounding ( but more boring) than the last two I like the strings in the back of this one. I like the kung fu noises at the start of kung fu and the song sounds nice enough but the lyrics are stupid and when the cheering comes in around the second verse it doesn’t work. Oh yeah is much better a poppier track with some good strings the song really lacks a bridge though but it does have a cool guitar solo which kinda counts. The bit before let it flow explodes should be about half the length, the rest of the song is good though not a favourite but not the worst. Innocent smile flows really well off let it flow this is a heavier cut, with a cool instrumental drum break not the best not the worst. Angel interceptor is awesome great intro great song usually I don’t like backing vocals too much but these (surprisingly) worked quite nicely. Lost in you has been the only time the album’s wanted to slow down, it does build up in aggressiveness but never to the extent of others. Darkside lightside is a huge final blow in the face, for my personal opinions of album tracklisting I would’ve had this as the penultimate and lost in you as the closer until the song goes to its “ lightside” an instrumental bit which really feels like the listener has reached the end of something epic. There are worse Britpop albums on the generator ( elastica’s debut, the cornershop album) much better on the generator ( suede’s dog man star, pulp’s different class) and much better that aren’t on the generator ( ocean colour scene’s Mosley shoals and the longpigs the sun is often out). Overall though it’s very solid and does deserve a place on this generator even if it’s a more mid level Britpop album.
Decent
Reel shit
I always loved 'Girl from Mars" but the album can be a bit of a same-y wall of sound.
Pop rock bangers from dusk till dawn!!!
Really dig this
A charming and fun album. Overall the sound is pretty standard for modern alternative rock, but many of the songs are pretty distinct and catchy.
File under 90s on 9. I have an affinity for the middle of the road 90s rock and this one started with a Tie Fighter so extra points
Cañero, guitarrero, mucha fuerza. Todo un descubrimiento. Realmente buenos.
The sound of happy nostalgia
For nostalgia reasons, it's a classic album. Youth, talent and determination. The original CD had a hidden track at the end - Sick Party - of them all puking up. https://open.spotify.com/track/6m5JPMEeIDUzU6ifOYn9Yr
Great fun 90s punk album
This might be my favorite album from a band I’ve never heard of that we’ve gotten so far
Pop rock perfection. Didnt think i knew any of their songs, actually knew loads and enjoyed a few of the ones i hadnt heard too
Wow nice album and a good discovery I think I'm going to spend some discovering this bands catalogue. The album has a lot of familiar influences. A little punky, a little grungy, some shoegazzy elements and a little Britton too. A solid 4 🌟
Ooh. Grungy britpop. This works for me. I really liked it overall, and though I don't really have any songs that stood out to me, I think the general vibe and atmosphere that was created was pretty neat.
An awesome wave on 90's rock. Heavy distortion, big drums, just a wall of sound, while also using dynamics effectively to give room for wider sonic exploration. Vocals remind me of Rivers Cuomo of Weezer, cementing that 90's power pop feel. This sound is incredible, I love the rawness of the distortion and the chosen riffs. This is definitely a fallout from Nirvana's career, and I have no complaints whatsoever. Sonic Youth is another clear influence, with all of the best parts. 1977 is probably the most straightforward album on the list so far. As in, there isn't much to branch off from here, it's just making the best of it's influences. Ash doesn't do anything inventive or boundary-pushing, they just do the best with this sound and it's great.
More punk I've never run into until now!
Una onda medio Green Day. El tema 4 "I'd give you anything" esta bueno. El 5 es muy Nirvana jaja. A la vez aveces suena como Coldplay, aveces como Oasis. Muy 90's todo. Tranquilamente podria ser soundtrack de Daria. El ultimo tema esta bueno tambien.
Pretty fun, good vibes and voice
It was pretty good. Kinda metal, kinda punk.
This album consists of great songs (Goldfinger, Girl From Mars, Kung Fu) played with lots of energy and joy.
Good start to the album! Really what I needed for work today. Ok maybe I just really need this album/type of music today, but I'm really enjoying it. Probably going to rate a 4. On the last song now, yeah I really enjoyed this album. It's not quite a 5 cuz of some of the vocal recordings (could just be part of the style) so I'm giving it a 4.
Such a chill, sweet sounding rock album. A very throwback sound, I especially loved "Girl From Mars"!
The sound of endless summer, innocent fumblings and cider in the park.
Great mix of slamming guitars and pop sensibilities. Maybe not the most original work in the world, but it was a fun ride!
Very evocative. A few absolute classics and a fair bit of filler as well.
Something about this just felt good. Really struck a lot of chords with me sonically.
Um excuse me- I'd like to talk to the ambassador of music-Nick-would-have-loved for northern Ireland. The Irish ambassador was able to push cranberries through (not complaining), what the hell! The Blue album was released in 94, this album in 96. It was perfect for the time, and now! Northern Irish prick. Asshole was probably asleep at the wheel trying to figure out if he identifies more with a potato or a scone. Anyways, I loved this album, I would give it 5 stars but I've only gone through it once. I listened to some more singles, all which were great. I'll be listening to this more for sure.
This shit is so 90s and I love it, grunge meets pop
Cool old school feel
really fun album good time
I really enjoyed this. Hidden gem!
I've been complaining a lot in my reviews about all of the 90s-00s britpop albums, but I've got to say, I like this. It definitely sounds of its time, but the production is excellent, and the sound is poppy without sounding cheesey. I can see why they got comparisons to the Buzzcocks. The first track on the album is an absolute scorcher, and they keep going from there. I absolutely love the chunky distortion of the guitars 4/5
Another just ok album, I don't really know what to say about it.
(4/7) generic brand Weezer
Living in Northern Ireland I’ve known so many people down the years who were massive fans of Ash but, while I don’t mind listening to them, they’ve never been a favourite of mine. Of the albums I’ve heard from them I would definitely say this is their best. There’s a few bangers on it but also a few too many that don’t hit the mark for me to give it more than a 3.
Didn't really listen to this at the time, it's a lot less indie than I thought it would be. Can't stand the voice, obviously. Push from the diaphragm please it's very simple
A fun Power pop album with great guitar work however does fall flat at times.
I’m genuinely surprised to see this album on the list. There are a couple of catchy hits to be found and there is a nice mix of youthful romance with fun loving pop sensibilities. Kung Fu, Oh Yeah, Goldfinger, Innocent Smile are the standouts. Girl From Mars is one of the most lyrically tortured songs ever written. Truly cringeworthy. It’s all a bit meh. They seem like such nice people though, so it’s hard to dislike them. They are corny, safe and entirely unoriginal (you have never heard a more shameless Sonic Youth rip off in your life), but it’s not entirely unpleasant to listen to. Their 2004 effort “Meltdown” is far superior. Honestly, that is one of the great pop albums of the new millennium. This list has a lot of debut albums which are not as good or as important as later albums from the same artist which absolutely deserve a place more: QOTSA, Bee Gees, Britney Spears, Aimee Mann, Foo Fighters, Justin Timberlakd so many others too. Ash belongs in that group. This is fine, but their best is so much better.
Indie rock like this does tend to push my buttons and this is no exception. A 3.5 rounded down.

Some good, some not so good.
I would’ve loved this if someone told me to listen to it at 15 years old. Too bad i’m now 28.
5/10
Lose Control - 3/5 Goldfinger - 4/5 Girl From Mars - 3/5 I'd Give You Anything - 3/5 Gone the Dream - 4/5 Kung Fu - 4/5 Oh Yeah - 5/5 Let It Flow - 2/5 Innocent Smile - 3/5 Angel Interceptor - 2/5 Lost in You - 3/5 Darkside Lightside - 3/5 Average score: 3.3/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ there were a few tracks that stood out to me i suppose, but there's no way this album deserves to make the 1001 album list. this felt like yet another album slipping it's way into the list just because it's a british album
Middle of the 90s rock music that still clearly shows its ties to grunge isn't something I haven't heard before but this bad does it well. Its not anything that really pulled me in and wants me to go back again later but I enjoyed the listen through.
I really liked this album especially when they leaned into Britpop's answer to Foo Fighters, which was most of the first half. But the more they leaned into their 90s alt meets the Beatles they come off as authentic as The Wonders (Oneders?) (7.66) ★★★½
Okay, but unexceptional, rock. 3 stars
The first half of this album was pretty good, and at their best they sound like a punkier Teenage Fanclub. "Kung Fu" is a great tune, and "Lose Control" and "Girl From Mars" are also were pretty good. Unfortunately, the second half got pretty mediocre. It's like they tried to stretch 30 minutes of material into an hour. 3.5 stars.
I didn't know they'd been around that long
I guess they were all born in 1977 or something because this is mid-90s as hell, right between Nirvana and mall punk, stylistically and on the timeline. Good, but probably not something I'd go back to.
Fine but unmemorable. Listened to it again 24 hour later and still not hooked.
I wish I'd listened to the hidden track on mute instead The album is pretty cool when the brain denies the track ever existed for the sake of its own self-preservation, though
вроде норм, но ничего не зацепило...
never heard of these guys before, and having listened to this album, i feel like i can see why. like, they're not bad, and i do like the sound here, but..... it's nothing particularly special, and i really don't think it needed to be over an hour long. having said that, there's still stuff i like here. i can always get into guitars loaded up with effects, so i enjoy the echoing feedback on "i'd give you anything" and the collapse into a mess of distortion near the end of "innocent smile", but i think i'd have enjoyed this more if they'd committed to shoegazing instead of just toeing the line, yknow? in spite of that my favourite tracks are "girl from mars" and "gone the dream" and honestly i couldn't say why for the life of me cos those are like, some of the furthest tracks from that sound on here i think. they just put all the pop punk sauce on those i guess? idk i could see the rating of this one bumping up a star, it's been growing on me a bit on each listen. but for now..... it's a strong 3.
liked it but didn't love it. of the superior sound in pop-punk imo so glad to have checked it out.
This was a good album. I should listen to more by these guys. Definitely britpop, so I'll probably struggle to get into it like I did in Jr High and High school, but it's a little heavier than other stuff, so you never know.
3.5
Felt like I should like I like it, as it was similar in style to Jimmy Eat World which is one of my favourites. But I just couldn't really get into it.
Bonito
Basic 90's rock ig
Girl from Mars was on a compilation cassette that someone made for me (without any info about who the bands were or what the songs were called) many years ago. I used to play that cassette all the time while driving. It’s nice to know at last who that particular song was by! The album is decent, though I hear more of the grunge influences than the others referenced in the reviews (it’s not really like Buzzcocks, is it?). I’m quite agnostic when it comes to grunge - it’s ok but it was never my thing.
Not bad. was at a 2 in the beginning but then it's raw 90's power charmed me a bit by th emidpoint
fertiggehört und schon wieder vergessen
Erst genervt, aber wurd dann zum Ende hin besser, trotzdem nicht mehr als 3 Sterne
Liked this album felt nostalgic, but wouldn’t seek it out again
Mid but good
Fine, not really my favorite rock style but didn’t hate it.
Tried to be hard, missed the mark - weezerish pop, teenagers for teenagers Girl from mars
This is another one of those inclusions that right away on listening seems inexplicable, average at best, and then you read Wikipedia and it says they are from the UK and you go "oh, right, yet another random UK band that doesn't really deserve to make the 1001, but are in because the author is from the UK , has a soft spot for UK bands, and probably saw them live or had a relationship that used this album as theme music".
Seems competent but only one (1) guitar lick made me look up.
A fun first album by a band with charm and a lot in the way of melodies. Goldfinger is an imposing song that still sounds amazing. The rest of the songs are very young in their tone but they were just knocking 20 when this was released. Their first and best album.
90's alt rock. It was alright. Nothing really stood out to me about this album and I skipped through most of the songs. (3)
Écoute intéressante. Pas ce qui a de plus original, un gros mélange de pleins d'autres bands 90s, ça sonne moyen, mais quand même bon somme toute.
Some interesting rock music on this LP. Couldn't believe they had 21 songs on a debut.
Very much fine background music, idk why it's here but again FINE
pretty cool instrumentals, shit lyrics
A little lull in the middle but overall pretty good
First song promised a 5/5 album. Then it went into a 3/5 territory and stayed there until the last note played in my headphones. I was tired by it then.
Oh, I get it! This is why there aren't any Weezer albums on this list. Weezer just blatantly ripped off this already established unknown band's sound. Wait, what? This should be Exhibit A in the legal argument that this list is UK biased right?
As I remember it, I first heard Ash when Kung-Fu came out, potentially it was on a magasine mixtape, and off the back of that, I bought their mini-album Trailer which was a lovely blast of gritty brit-rock. I actually remember being a little disappointed at 1977 although not enough to not ultimately enjoy it. The production was much more polished and they really started leaning into the poppier side of themselves which is ultimately where their career would go. So I have some nostalgia for this, but I haven't played it in probably 25 years and I doubt I will again.
This has such a great youthful energy, and knowing the band members were still in their teens when they recorded it makes the album even more enjoyable.
It just kind of drags. Starts decent and then stays mellow.
Nice rock album. nothing extraordinary.
Did I enjoy this? Yes. Was I blown away? Absolutely not. I do enjoy the Brit-Pop / Rock vibes on this album but so many of the songs felt quite middle of the road for me. There's also something about the vocals that grate on me slightly. Having said that though, most of the album is an enjoyable listen and there's plenty of catchy hooks throughout. I'll give a strong 6/10, light 7/10 for this.
A very, very 90s alternative album
More unnecessary Britpop. Yay. Although this sounds more like generic 90s alt rock than just Britpop. There's also the fuzzy guitar because all generic 90s bands had to try to sound like Nirvana to sell CDs. I noticed a lot of reviews say this sounds like Weezer. It does, only Weezer is much better. They could have put the Blue Album on the list instead of this. 2.5
Not bad but not tops either
Starts strong but then gets boring.
There’s an alternate universe where Spike Jonze made some music videos for Ash and they had a Weezer-esque career. They’re probably better off. I like this album a lot, though like a lot of 90s pop-punk, I forget about it the moment the CD ends.
Correcto
I was coming in expecting to hate it, probably from ptsd caused by the last two albums. But it wasn’t half bad, a handful of songs that I would definitely go back to.
ehh
Fun power pop, cleaned up with a mid-90s sound, but not sure it's new or different than wasn't being played to death by dozens of American bands a half-decade-plus earlier.
I'm pretty glad I listened to the version without the bonus track. I was preparing myself mentally, but there was no need for an extra 12 minutes of play time. I'm also pleased it wasn't quite Brit-pop, though I could hear the inevitable influence in there, but they really do have a stronger American rock influence that 'makes' the album. It's like a hard alt-rock, and that's a mood, and they're just commercial enough to work outside of that mood if you're into sounds that can be found on the radio. It was an ok experience for me, no hate. Not sure I'll feel like replaying, but if someone puts it on next to me I'll be able to rock out. 3.1/5
This album was one of the more adventurous ones I have listened to with some highs and lows, but each song felt like its own. I enjoyed the front half more.
Britpop meets Seattle grunge , two very distinct sounds combine in what is a Fun album all things considered. Very of its time but not bad for that The singles are all excellent and probably worth bumping this a rank
Where britpop meets garage band. The collectors edition has covers of abba and Star Wars songs.
3/5
Ash. Well, I never knew. Nice little album, though I enjoyed the first listem more than the second.
This had an interesting enough grunge/alternative sound. But nothing really to make it stand out.
Surprisingly fun and energetic exactly in the way I was looking for. There is the perfect amount of angst and metal rock for me but to a point that does not go overboard. The chord progressions are simple but very effective and the vibes overall are right where they should be which makes this an easy listen with quite a few stand out tracks.
Standard 4/4 Rock. Destined to be the Dad Rock of the future, which I suppose is now. Inoffensive classic three star album.
Ash have some great songs, but I never really rated their albums. This was okay but not something I'd rush to put on again
Op zich vermakelijk. Niets bijzonders
Prima. Begon sterk, toen minder en uiteindelijk wel tof
3.1 2x
I enjoyed this. Pretty typical of the time period, but it was a good listen. I will probably spin it again.
Aggressively fun garage rock. I have never heard of this guys. It was nice enough.
Ok. Definitely of an era. Dodgy vocals on at least one track
Not listened to this since around the time it came out and I’m not sure I’ll listen again in a hurry. I mean it’s ok, a couple of the album tracks (e.g. Innocent Smile) I liked more than the singles. But it just doesn’t feel as good as some of the similar sounding stuff their contemporaries realeased (e.g. Supergrass, Weezer). But it was alright. I suspect a lot of these tracks probably sound better live than recorded.
This album evokes strong memories because my mate Stu loves them to bits, and I’ve always enjoyed slagging them off to annoy him. What do I really think. While I truly can’t stand ‘Girl from Mars’, there are a couple of catchy pop punk numbers which are a good listen. But the filller, which is a fair chunk, just tends to show up what an average vocalist he is. Still, given they were teenagers when they wrote it, it’s a decent high energy effort.
90’s alt Brit rock
Me gustó pero 100% olvidable. Alguien tiene que inventar algo de esta lista Nota: 2.8
A perfectly fine listen that definitely feeds the 90s hunger. Not bad, but not great. Pretty forgettable. The Dinosaur Jr and Teenage Fanclub comparisons are present for sure, but to me this also leans more into the world of Weezer, early Soul Asylum and Collective Soul, and even some Foo sprinkled on. Only, those bands do it way better. And nearly 600 albums in here, we have yet to receive an album from any of them. Hmmm…
This was a good listen, albeit a bit generic and didn’t totally feel like a standout to me. But enjoyable, prob not a repeat listen.
This was solid. I hadn’t heard of these guys (at least I don’t think I have 🤔). Regardless, will definitely be checking out more. Girl from Mars is a fun one. I also appreciate the Star Wars tie fighter sound at the beginning. And a song about Kung Fu. I’m tempted to rate higher but I think this benefits from being very much in my wheelhouse. But not sure if this is a huge standout for a lot of the music at that time. 3.25
Yet again a perfectly pleasant album that is just average 1990s fare. Too many of these on the list.
I had never even heard of Ash. The question that remains is why this album had to be included in this book with the 15-20 other Brit-pop albums? What is being done here that makes the album essential listening? It's more of a power-pop version of Brit-pop, but they use Oasis's producer and are clearly influenced by garage rock...and Star Wars? There is nothing offensive here but it does feel like I have heard this all before, even when it comes to the song titles. Lose Control? Isn't that a Feeder song? Goldfinger? A Bond movie. Girl from Mars? I thought Bowie wrote this one already? Innocent Smile? I pretty sure that was originally a The The song. Lost in You? Another Feeder song? Darkside Lightside? Is this a Weird Al parody of Champagne Supernova? The Curse of Familiarity (trademarked) is strong with this album. It's comfortable in some ways because we have heard this all before, but it also isn't revolutionary because we have heard all this before. Favorite songs: Lose Control Goldfinger Girl From Mars Oh Yeah Let It Flow Lost in You
I loved Girl from Mars first time around and Kung Fu is an absolute blast. Not sure why I never purchased the album at the time - maybe Ash had become too popular for me. The singles still hold up - but the album tracks are a bit patchy - noticeably grungier/ fuzzier and less polished then the singles.
Non è malaccio, ma un po' noioso.
Standaard britpop. Niet ruk, zeker niet super boeiend.
solid
I am unfamiliar with this band, but overall pretty solid release.
it starts strong but kinda tapers out
2.8/5 Girl from Mars is just a brilliant song. I used to listen to it all the time when it first came out and I never get sick of it. A couple other decent songs on the album and it's one I could probably listen to more in the future.
I liked it!
Riffs aplenty, I have a friend that loves these guys and sings like Tim Wheeler.
2.5
Pretty good punk album
It had some jammin' riffs. Nothing really stuck out to me. Not bad.
Fine, but nothing special Best Song: Lose Control Rating: 5.0/10 Stars: 3
This album starts so well with the song "Lose Control", a very frenetic, fast pop punk track with some very distorted guitars that have a lot of energy. Unfortunately, from this point what the album focuses, in its majority, way more in power pop and britpop, losing all the energy the opener established, with the exception on some other tracks like "Kung Fu", "Angel Interceptor" and "Darkside Lightside". On the bright side, the guitars and bass stay super noisy through the whole record, which is what I liked the most about it. When it comes to the ideas, it sounds quite generic britpop, but still has a really catchy and fun sound, and as already mentioned, the very distorted sound adds a bit of uniqueness to their music. Maybe there are some cuts that come as a bit cheesy like "Kung Fu", "Oh Yeah" and "Let it Flow", but overall, it is a fun experience, yet a bit forgettable.
A little nondescript but still fun and easy on the ears
Very cool overall, some annoying bits, but I like its style
Nostalgi. Ok album, noen hits. Har ikke revolusjonert verden på noen som helst måte.
This is Beta Band + Pixies to me. Good stuff, but it doesn’t cross the border into greatness.
I don’t hate Ash but I don’t think this should be in the list. It’s pretty generic 6 / 10 Best track/s: Girl From Mars, Angel Interceptor
A good year!
Not unpleasant but hard to extract anything out of it. I could have this as background music
banal
I had an Ash greatest hits when I was a kid which was pretty good, but the album tracks here are nothing special. Girl From Mars is still a banger though
I’m trying to figure out why other generic 90s power pop bands speak to me more than this did and I can’t really put my finger on it. Something about the production maybe? The vocalist? It’s fine. But missing any oomph to live in my head beyond this listen
Fun hearing girl from mars and recognising it. All the songs were enjoyable some were just a bit forgettable. 3.5 rounded down (3 feels harsh but it wasn't an 8/10)
Bitvis hyfsat bra men mestadels okej och inget som riktigt sticker ut. Är inte supersåld på sångaren. Stabil men lite tråkig trea.
The review apparently didn’t save and now I remember nothing about this, except that it was fine for Britpop and I gave it a 3 🤷🏻♀️
Intro track was better than expected. Must admit my attention fell off throughout the album
Never heard of this band. Pretty cool tunes so far. Cool stuff. Easy to listen. Easy rock.
Du rock
Ok
2.5
Opens up with the scream of a TIE Fighter, letting you know this is going to be a fun album. Solid 90's rocking all the way through, but nothing really grabbed me. It just sounded like average radio pop-punk. My Rating: 3/5
not bad
I thought this would be a 4-star album, because I listen to it all the time, but in the context of all of this amazing music it is only a 3-star. Catchy song:s that take me right back to my teens, but the vocals are not of the same caliber as many of the other artists I have been listening to through this list.
On paper, 1977 sounds like it should be another Union Jack–waving Britpop victory lap. In reality, Ash’s debut has way more in common with basement-shaking proto-emo, sugary pop-punk, and the fuzzed-out hangover of post-grunge than anything happening in Camden circa ’96. The riffs are huge, the choruses are earnest to the point of toothache, and the whole thing is slathered in distortion that frequently turns the band into a pleasantly buzzing blur. That’s part of the charm—and part of the problem. The production buries the vocals so deep in the mix you half-expect to find them under a pile of flannel shirts, and several tracks dissolve into mush instead of detonating. Still, when they lock in, they really lock in: “Goldfinger” rides a crunchy, power-pop surge that feels like a noisier cousin to Weezer’s slacker anthems, and “Girl from Mars” shoots for the stars with a sugar-rush chorus and wide-eyed vocal that predicts a decade’s worth of mall-emo romantics. 1977 isn’t Britpop so much as a scrappy, distortion-caked love letter to teenage boredom—and while it doesn’t always hit its target, it’s hard not to admire the volume.
IT was different but OK
oh hell yeah ... were my thoughts as I heard the album open. But then they started droning like lonely teenage boys :p This album would've been so good if it kept the same energy it had in the first 20 seconds. I feel bad for the lonely bastards that have never lived their own version of "Oh Yeah"
This album is like playing Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for an hour or so on a Friday after school before heading to your mates place with a 20 for 20 box of Double Browns. Your mate Dan has bought Weezer's Blue Album to play. It is a great album, but he brought it last week as well and you actually wanted to watch the rugby that is on tv, but without the commentary you can't really get in to the game. Oh well. You have a fun night, even if it wasn't overly memorable.
Cool band at first. Album starts well. But by the end it was a drag. Oh yeah was not great, as was innocent smile. But it has its moments with Kung Fu.
Really fun pop punk sounds in some places 3-4
I enjoyed reuniting with this album. It's been a minute. I'd give it another half star if I were able.
Gets a bit lost in the sea of 90s britpop, but some nice songs throughout.
- Jeg synes at den slags rock er egentlig helt udemøblet, men den guitar der, det er bare ikke mig
