Album Summary

Clube da Esquina is a 1972 double album by the Brazilian music artists collective Clube da Esquina, credited to Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges. Considered an important record in the history of Brazilian music, it features arrangements by Eumir Deodato and Wagner Tiso, and conductions by Paulo Moura. The album garnered attention for its engaged compositions and miscellany of sounds. Despite popular belief, the photo on the album cover does not depict Borges and Nascimento as children. It was taken by a member of the collective, Brazilian photographer Cafi (Carlos da Silva Assunção Filho), on the side of a road in the rural northern Rio de Janeiro state. Due to increased public interest in the album's 40th anniversary, a search for the two boys was conducted, successfully identifying them as Antonio Rimes and Antônio Carlos Rosa de Oliveira.

Album was a decent enough listen but nothing special about it to me. It being in another language didn't even matter, there just didn't seem to be any energy to make it more than average. I rounded it out to a 4/10 and gave it 2 stars.

This is so cool! This is the best part of this project, finding random gems like this, that I would never have found otherwise.

I’m kind of a weeaboo for brazil

# Album Name: Clube Da Esquina # Artist: Milton Nascimento # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Couple of good tracks but the length and number of songs kills it. # Top Tunes: # Would I listen to it again? No

Entertaining and out of the ordinary. Glad this was on the list.

I really wanted to love this, but it fell a bit short. Not quite what I was hoping it would be. 2.5* rounded up to 3*

Wow!! I'd never listened to Milton Nascimento or Lo Borges before. Echos of Brian Wilson throughout! Gorgeous soundscape from beginning to end.

Beautiful mix of folk, jazz, tropicalia, psychedelic, and even classical. Some of the songs were so short that they were over sooner than I wanted them to be. There were so many great melodies and ideas that it would take many listens to really sink in. Nascimento's and Borges' voices are the constants and they are beautiful instruments.

Keeps you on your toes the whole time. Sounds like the long lost cousin of British and American 60s pop acts like the zombies or the turtles, filtered and refiltered through Brazilian styles. But also lots of psychedelic funk sound. Really cool listen that I enjoyed alot

Beautiful music!

A pleasant listen though I have no idea what’s being sung. 2.5/5.0

This album took a couple of listens to win me over, especially the slower first half. I knew a few of the Milton Nascimento songs already, but the album as a whole is sprawling and hard to wrap your head around. Moments of beauty surfaced and were lost in the sheer volume and variety of the music. A few great songs stood out, and then more on the next listen, and by the third listen I was fully entranced from start to finish. This album reminds me of a slowly developing 70s movie. What appears mundane and meandering becomes meaningful as you become increasingly part of the film’s world. The pacing that initially seemed unfocused is revealed as masterful storytelling, not in the sense of clever plot twists or a series of wacky coincidences that tie everything together but by providing a deeper understanding of the characters and situation than can be summed up by the events depicted. Not understanding Portuguese, the explicit story of this album is not clear to me, but there are themes and developments you can pick up from the music, starting from a more passive, self-reflective, or questioning or maybe mournful place and moving toward a more determined, confident, and expressive endpoint. The music closer to that endpoint is more immediately engaging, but the whole album is about the process of finding your way. The story is not encapsulated within the endpoint and the endpoint is not predetermined or even certain. At least that’s my interpretation! Essential listen: yes Desert island disc: definitely

this was interesting and enjoyable to listen to, totally new to me. I didn't necessarily love it or get drawn into it fully... but I liked it!

Great discovery, really interesting Latin music ⭐⭐⭐⭐

First thought: “What the heck is this?” During the first song “Why the heck haven’t I heard this before?” It’s a very interesting mix of genres, some sound so quintessentially Brazilian, but there’s other influences and it sounds lovely and varied as a result.

Oh damn I enjoyed this album. There’s parts of it that could have been from a contemporary electronic album or from timeless jazz… this is one my favorite hidden gem finds on this list, 1000+ albums in.

so many different sounds on this album very cool

Really really good

One of my all time favorite albums! Glad it's on this list!

Good Brazilian

I liked quite a few of the songs and the arrangements, but a double album was too much to take in on a late Thursday. Also, there were too many calm songs with not much direction. However, Um Girassol stood out musically, and I liked the little detours into psychedelia and prog from time to time. Great bass playing

some very meh tracks but also some very beautiful ones

Boa surpresa… não espera a isso!

This was all very soothing and nothing too terrible. It was a bit long though.

Lush eclectic music and gorgeous plaintive vocals. The kind of pleasant surprise I wish the list gifted us with more often! It's a bit too long but double albums always are.

A double album of Brazilian music which sounds like their version of BBC Radio 2 did not go down well. I suppose not being able to understand the words didn’t help but then who needs words when the music is really good (e.g. Cocteau Twins). I liked the tempo of a couple of tracks but this was just too much of rather inconsequential mediocrity.

I dont think I gave this record as much of a fair chance as I would have liked to so will have a relisten. As it is I listened whilst being very stressed at work - I enjoyed the tropicalia vibes, felt it picked up more in the second half of the album. Will relisten on a lazy Sunday on a cosy chair with a good book.

Love hearing stuff I have no idea about, need a few more listens and may revise my rating (upwards!) then, as this was a lot to parse in one go.

Not for me. Surely there are better Latina albums as well. The vocals were weak and too low in the mix. Perhaps I would have enjoyed it better if it was just an instrumental

Spent more time with this album than usual, but I think I liked it. The Mr. Bean song was kinda strange though.

No standouts

Something that you have to be in the mood for, but this is incredible.

This was a pleasant surprise! Loved almost everything on this, can't wait to relisten

It's a fine album. It runs a little long.

Again what blackmail does the Portuguese language have on this goddamn book??? I'm happy there are some non-western albums but holy shit why are they all Brazilian or Portuguese. Free me from these chains dude. It's good but I'm so certain you can find some other countries and languages to throw on here. Please. And you know what fuck the Portuguese. Favourite: Trem De Doido Least favourite: O Trem Azul

One problem I run into with a lot of foreign-language albums is that after a while the songs can start blending together for me. That happened some here too, but at least this one had enough different sounds to keep it from feeling completely samey. Some songs felt more traditional and acoustic, while others had a much more modern rock sound. “Trem de Doido” was probably the one that stood out the most to me. The electric guitar on that song was really good and gave the album a little more bite.

I like a lot about this album, but it feels too long. The more acoustic songs take up too much time. The up-tempo songs are always a breath of fresh air, but not for long. Definitely some lovely songs on this album, but I was hoping to like it a little more.

Incredible album, I did not expect it to be so good. Each song is unique in its own way, you can listen to it and let time fly by, the alternative sounds and mixes with Brazilian music is exceptional. Don't miss this one, it has become a new favorite of mine.

I love when I discover music I've never heard of before. I can't believe it's from the early 70s, it felt so much more modern to my ear.

Minder leuk dan verwacht toch

I liked this, and I think I want to give it another spin soon. With my middling Spanish, it's hard to not try interpreting Brazilian Portuguese. It's also not very fruitful ⭐⭐⭐.75

Such a great album for not knowing Portuguese. The rhythms and tropical sounds had me dancing around or at least shaking my hips. It does have a limit on it because I don't speak the language so can only enjoy it on the music level. Really liked the opening track, Tudo O Que Voce Podia Ser.

Very lush and pleasant album. Lot of love for it.

Now this is a style of music I can safely say I've never been exposed to before. Listening to Clube Da Esquina has made me want to learn and hear more.

-Tracks longer than 3:59: A couple -Long tracks interesting or special: For the most part yes. I never checked to see how much longer there was until a track was done. -Album shorter than 58 minutes: Indeed it is. -Will listen to album again: Yes -Overall: Brazilian music from the 70s? Sign me up. I really enjoyed this album and its vibe, but it’s important to note that it’s more than “just a vibe”. The music is well crafted and well played, and even if I don’t speak, Portuguese, few languages sound more beautiful when sung. Also, if you liked Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser there is an awesome version out there by Quarteto Em Cy.

some really interesting stuff here! not gonna say everything was entirely my vibe but some really cool things nonetheless. I really enjoyed the variety of styles and genres present in this album. if i didnt like what was playing, all i had to do was to wait till the next song and it would be a completely different thing.

This is an album I'd love to revisit on a calm, happy summer day. Even though sadly, did not understand the lyrics, the whole atmosphere of this project was incredibly calming, with each song holding a lot of presence and emotion. 'Clube Da Esquina N2' was a particular favourite, with a nostalgic quality to it which tugged at my heartstrings. Although this project was a bit long, moments like the electric guitar on 'Trem de Doido' keep it fresh occasionally. So cool to be able to listen to something the Brazilian language!

What a voice! Sometimes I wonder if i give out 5s too easily but like… this is supposed to be a collection of the 1001 albums you need to listen to, I should *hope* they’d be good

I really enjoyed this. I love when this gives me something different.

A classic. Fave Tracks: Tudo o Que Voce Podia Ser, O Trem Azul, Um Girassol da Cor do Seu Cabelo, Saidas e Bandeiras No 2 4.3/5

It was a lovely album with a lot of surprisingly modern sounds. Fun to listen to.

Suffers from me not knowing a word of Portuguese, but this is still very cool. There's a few songs I could really groove to, and the rest makes really delightful background noise.

This was a nice enough listen but I just have trouble latching on to some other manage stuff. Enjoyed the songs as I they were playing but beyond that nothing notable.

Tres magnifique

One of the more unique albums on this list, and I can’t find anything I would change about it

fire album, would listen again, dip at end, but still beautiful

Nice to see the variety in this list. Ofcourse I never heard of this.on one hand it sounds musically fresh and well played but on the other hand I realise that some music styles are just not for me and also the fact that I can’t understand any of the lyrics doesn’t help either.

5 - AVERAGE

This was nice to hear in the background, but I didn’t feel personally called to it.

Not really a genre I'm familiar with...but it's pretty good. I enjoyed some of the songs like: "Um Girasol Da Cor Do Seu Cabelo", "Tudo O Que Vocè Podia Ser", "O Trem Azul", "Me Deixa Em Paz", "Clube Da Esquina N 2 (probably my favourite), "Um Gusto De Sol" (very nice instrumentation in the second half of the song) or "Trem Do Doido". I did not like some other tracks: "Dos Cruces", "Cravo E Canela", "San Vicente". In any case, it is interesting and pretty varied. I think it deserves, at least, 3 stars (actually, it is in the 3,5 star range for me, so this may grow on me to reach 4 stars).

Three quarters of the album is a singer songwriter in Portuguese. I found this bit hard to like. The album mixed up styles in the second part and became a lot more interesting.

This really took me on a ride.. I was expecting Latin jazz and bosa nova influences from beginning and felt like the first few tracks didn't land, the longer I listened the more experimental the album felt and the more I liked it. Sometimes I feel like chamber pop can be a bit over the top and cliche, but the tracks on here that leaned in that direction I really liked. Maybe it was not understanding the lyrics, but if felt like this music really allows you to interpret it in different ways... It's long and a bit complicated to listen to, but I felt like it needed all of that to pull off what it did. Super fun discovery I will come back to again.

I am completing the 1001 project for albums like this. There is next to no reason for me to have stumbled across a Brazilian psychedelic folk and baroque pop album from the 1970s. I don't speak Portuguese or Spanish, so I have no idea what they're singing about, but their emotions are still conveyed well through their singing. Both the music and production on this are superb aside from a few odd choices here and there (like incredibly quick fade outs or panning entire sections of a track hard right; I literally thought my headphones stopped working for a minute). Overall, this was a very pleasant and enjoyable listen and I can see myself coming back to this album on a warm, lazy summer day.

This was pretty cool.

A really pleasant album with nice melodies and vocals.

Fine album.

Beautiful album that I was convinced was made in the early 2000s not 1972. This international blend of music warms up your soul. Another surprise album

Brazilian Radiohead, very solid album I absolutely never would have stumbled onto without the list. Hard to say I’ll come back to it but it’s incredibly well written and insanely complex while being an easy listen.

Really beautiful melodies. Lots of different sounds but it feels very natural together.

I could hear the soul in it, but at the same time ir didn’t really move me. One I could see coming back to in a different mood and reassessing.

Really enjoyed it - nice sound - giving 3 as although I enjoyed I don’t think I’d look to search out

Surprisingly boring for a latin album on this list.

This was fine but I feel like I can't pay enough attention to it and the music isn't quite punchy enough for me to forget I don't understand a word of it.

So far on this list I've been given at least four Brazillian records, and I've really enjoyed them all. I was looking forward to this one- and it paid off. I love it. The production actually sounds quite modern to me. People like the Fleet Foxes, for example, have borrowed heavily from this approach to folk music. The performances are excellent, the songs are catchy and diverse. I'm not sure what else a person might want to listen to chilling around the house, or making dinner, or eating dinner, or having friends over for dinner (AM I HUNGRY what is happening). Anyways. For all your dinner and non-dinner related activities, I highly recommend some *Clube Da Esquina*. FOUR STARS

Idk I went back and forth a lot. Every song sounded the same and some I liked and some I didn’t. It felt all dependent on my mood over the course of the morning.

I think it’s good? I don’t know because I don’t speak the language. None of it processed. Kinda unfair off the bat. Could be worse

Cover art is heat. Nice sound pretty music. Don’t understand the words

An interesting blend of genres. I am particularly fond of the folk elements at play throughout (namely on tracks like "Dos cruces" and "Lilia"). The addition of psychedelic and baroque makes for some interesting moments, and I do think that this is an album that I will like more as time goes on. My biggest issue with it right now is the length, but with that said it's not obnoxiously long or anything (it does overstay its welcome, but not by much).

7/10 Varied and filled with musical ideas and nice melodies. Highlights: Um Girassol Da Cor Do Seu Cabelo Nada Sera Como Antes Trem de Doido Cais Clube Da Esquina No2

Lovely downtempo bossa nova, but I wish it cranked things up a bit once in a while.

Wow. I loved this. It’s wild that this album was negatively received when it first came out. It’s clearly incredible. So much variety, so imaginative, such a brilliant mix of styles while staying so firmly Brazilian. It’s not always easy to connect with albums in a language I don’t speak, but this was far and away my favorite from the list so far.

Really enjoyed listening to this. Lovely vocals and a unique mix of Brazillian music with Western cultural influences. Only real criticism is it is a bit long! Always lovely to discover a new album like this. 8/10

Très différent de d'habitude et j'ai adoré

está bueno pero al final entra en un bajon

I can't get into foreign language music, I need to understand the lyrics

The music on Clube da Esquina, the double LP by Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges, was pleasantly vibrant, upbeat, and often beautifully haunting. While I couldn’t understand a lick of what they were saying since I don’t speak Portuguese, the music was more than capable of doing all the heavy lifting. I’m not entirely sure what else to say about it. This album was new territory for me, yet somehow it still spoke volumes. Under normal circumstances, I would have complained about a 64-minute runtime, but you’re not getting a peep out of me this time. When I eventually come back to this album, I’ll want to remember the tracks that stood out as particularly enjoyable: (8) “Um Girassol da Cor do Seu Cabelo” (16) “Um Gosto de Sol” (18) “Lilia”

This was just the change of pace I needed. It's pretty enjoyable stuff.

I liked this one, it was very chill, but was a bit all over the place at times.

8/10 Best songs: Nuvem Cigana, Paisagem Da Janela - Ao Vivo, Trem De Doido THIS is why I'm doing this project - to hear music I never would have listened to otherwise. This album is just lovely - traces of bossa nova, fado, and psychedelic rock mixed together and turned into music just not present elsewhere on this list. My only complaint is that the music is at times a little too slow for too long for me, but I could see myself listening again on the future and being okay with it.

Good music, good vocals but not enough to be on my “must revisit” list

Lovely little Brazilian album with all the Afro Cuban flair that I've come to know and love. I spent the day on the beach with my love and this was the soundtrack. Pretty lucky dude I'd say. 4 stars all the way. Simply because I haven't spent enough time with the album to inch it forward that extra star. But I digress. Putting this one in my catalogue for future consistent consumption.

Pleasant

Sorry if this makes me uneducated or westernised but I couldn't get into this
