That was beautiful.
Crazy 70s retro sound!
Rest in peace to Lo Borges, he passed away recently. I love this album. It's such a rewarding listen and it's one of those albums where the melodies get stuck in your head long after you finish listening to it. It takes me back to my childhood summers; maybe it's the album cover but it transports me to an entirely different time and place. It's albums like this that make me go "oh ok so this is why i'm obsessed with music". It would be so easy to overlook a masterpiece like this, but I find myself wanting to further explore the sounds of this genre in the future.
Such a treat to revisit this album! Brazilian music is forever goated. Favorite track: Tudo O Que Voce Podia Ser 4.5/5
I just kept saying "wow" I think I would never have listened to this album if not for this project, this experience is just what I am chasing. Part of it anyway
Absolutely loved this album. Interestingly enough, I thought it sounded like a precursor to some of Fleet Foxes’ later albums like Crack-Up. Really creative, diverse, progressive music in multiple genres, played and sung with feeling. Must-listen #290
É pura emoção encontrar essa obra prima na lista dos melhores do mundo!
Solid grooves though Frans
I actually listened to this one separate from the challenge a few months back, not knowing it was on the list. So i went into this relisten already knowing what rating I was gonna give it. This album is absolutely gorgeous, all of the singers are ethereal, the mix of physcadelic rock, folk, and traditional Brazilian music give this album a unique feel that I’ve never seen elsewhere. I should really do a deep dive into Brazilian music, because everything that I have heard I’ve loved.
Beautiful instrumental
It's a shame I don't speak Portugese, as I'm sure I'm missing out on a lot that this album has to offer by not being able to understand the lyrics. Even so, this was a delight to listen to. Both Milton and Borges have captivating voices; I feel like I could just sit and listen to them sing over a simple guitar track for hours on end (If only I knew what they were actually saying). As for the music itself, honestly this album is so long and dense with variety that it's hard to really summarize my thoughts with the amount of time I'm willing to spend on these silly little reviews, but to generalize as best I can, the record is packed full of some really beautiful soundscapes that it's easy to find yourself getting lost in, with lots of little flourishes and interesting progressions to keep your attention. It's very impressive to make an album this long that so rarely loses your interest. My only real complaint is that the production and mixing seems a bit off in places. Sometimes the vocals seem a little drowned out by the instruments. I'm not sure what's going on near the end of Cais either when all the sound suddenly cuts out in one ear. I suppose they might not have been working with top of the line production techniques in Brazil in the early 70s, so it's understandable. Favourite tracks: Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser, Um Girassol Da Cor De Seu Cabelo, Os Povos, Trem De Doido
'# Playlist Track - Um Girassol da Cor do Seu Cabelo # Notes - Far from being a perfect album. The ebb and flow is sometimes interrupted abruptly and tracks like 'Dos Cruces' feel out of place. - Still, the opening is monumental, and moments like the closing of "Um Girassol da Cor do Seu Cabelo" are just wonderful. - Creative, beautifully written and executed. Definitely recommend listening to it at least once in a lifetime.
Soft and beautiful!
It's a vibe
Love this album. Sounds so expressive. I'm a big fan of Milton Nascimento.
Love this
Interesting, soothing a lovely listen. What I like about this project is that it exposes me to music I have never encountered before. So happy this was included...Please NO MORE DYLAN..
Loved the simplicity and beauty of this album. Was a lovely surprise on my commute to work in the dark on a cold winter morning!
This is exactly why I wanted to do this. Never, ever heard of this group before and I felt myself looking forward to the next song. Retro but also modern? I kept hearing other bands that came way after this in each song. 5/5
That's new to me and pretty wonderful.
peak. um dos melhores albuns do brasil. tem gosto de infancia.
1001 Albums Vol. 0008: Clube Da Esquina ============================================================ Introduction: This is an album that I've literally never heard of before. I've not seen anyone talk about it online, no critical reviews of it, and so on up until this moment. Hell, I still don't even know that much about it. I get most of my information from the small Wikipedia snippet that the website decides to take, yet that doesn't even tell me all that much besides the story of the cover. I generally don't like to look all that deep into albums before I listen to them as I want to go in forming my own opinion and being genuinely surprised by what I hear, and I'm going to stick to that this time. I would absolutely never check a critical review or critic website pertaining to the album I'm supposed to be listening to. If I've heard a review in the past, however, then I obviously can't do anything about that. I do still like to have some context going into an album, yet I like that context to be vague and preferably only include details as to why the album was made and what events lead up to its creation. Anyway, with that said, this is actually my first album which is not going to be in English. I use Spotify, so I'll be able to translate the lyrics on the fly, however. This album was released way back in 1972. It was actually a collaborative effort between two Brazilian artists. Now, Spotify does credit some songs to one specific artist at times, so I'm not entirely sure if each song was collaboratively written or if these two artists wrote songs solo. I don't know. Either way, I have heard that this album was extremely influential for Brazilian music at the time of its release and even now. Now, apparently the genre it helped push forward in known as MPB. I have literally never heard of this genre of music before, so I have absolutely no idea what to expect. I think that should just sum up my feelings about this album perfectly. I just have no idea what I'm getting into. This album was apparently influential, and I tend to automatically associate influential albums with being so unbelievably good, yet there are plenty of artists that have had influential releases which absolutely sucked. Nevertheless, I can do nothing but get into this album. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Track 1: Tudo O Você Podia Ser Score: 11/10 Track 2: Cais Score: 9/10 Track 3: O Trem Azul Score: 10/10 Track 4: Saídas E Bandeiras Nº 1 Score: 8/10 Track 5: Nuvem Cigana Score: 9/10 Track 6: Cravo E Canela Score: 9/10 Track 7: Dos Cruces Score: 9/10 Track 8: Um Girassol Da Cor Do Seu Cabelo Score: 11/10 Track 9: San Vicente Score: 9/10 Track 10: Estrelas Score: 8/10 Track 11: Clube Da Esquina Nº 2 Score: 10/10 Track 12: Paisagem Da Janela Score: 10/10 Track 13: Me Deixa Em Paz Score: 9/10 Track 14: Os Povos Score: 9/10 Track 15: Saídas E Bandeiras Nº 2 Score: 8/10 Track 16: Um Gosto De Sol Score: 9/10 Track 17: Pelo Amor De Dues Score: 8/10 Track 18: Lilla Score: 9/10 Track 19: Trem De Doido Score: 10/10 Track 20: Nada Será Como Antes Score: 9/10 Track 21: Ao Que Vai Nascer Score: 8/10 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Conclusion: I came in having absolutely no idea what to expect, and I came out feeling absolutely moved, surprised, and shocked at what I had just heard. This album is a gem. It's a masterpiece. It's honestly a shame that this album is so vaguely know about nowadays. I did some additional research after listening to the album, and I discovered that it apparently sold pretty well back in the day. Hell, it even made its way all the way to U.S. record stores. That should honestly say something. I don't even know where to begin with this album. I mean, I guess I'll start by talking about just how varied every single track off this album is. There is so, so, so much genre-blending across this album that I honestly couldn't even name every genre I heard during my listen. Most of the time, this much variety would be a bad thing as it would make the album feel a bit disorganized, yet it honestly couldn't be a better thing here. It's a bit weird to describe, yet every song off this album, despite having different genres, all feel as they belong in the same album. This may be due to the fact that most songs use similar core instrumentation, it may be because of the amazing vocals, or it may be because of something that I don't even really notice. I don't know. Now, like I just said, this album has a crap-ton of variety spread throughout it. You may be listening to a traditional folk song one minute and then be thrown into a psychedelic rock song the next with a kick-as guitar. Point is, this album is very musically varied. I would honestly have to do a track-by-track analysis of every song to describe fully the musical tone of this album. I've done that a few times in the past and really don't feel like doing it anymore, so I'm not. Now, I will say, all of these tracks do feel musically united by a weird tropical sense spread throughout most songs. It's really not all that tropical, yet it's the best way I can describe it. I'm sure someone more familiar with MPB could do a better job at describing what I'm trying to. Nevertheless, this album's music is masterfully written. The arrangements are perfect for each song, the amount of uniqueness never leaves me bored, the instrumentation for each genre fits perfectly, the production of the instrumentation is wonderful, and many more things that I just can't say because of how long it would take. Like I just mentioned, the production off of this album is absolutely amazing as well, especially for the early 70's. I mean, this is the same year Ziggy Stardust released and this album sounds miles better than it production wise. I mean, the amount of variety here lets you have practically every great aspect of production you can think of. Subdued and heavy guitars in a psychedelic rock track, an echoing voice in a plain psychedelic track, vibrant sounds in a sunshine pop track, and so on. There was so much that went into producing every track, and the same tricks for a singular track couldn't be applied to the next because of how different every song is. Again, this album is freaking amazing. Now, the vocals are simply sublime. Despite what I said in the intro, people who add the lyrics to Spotify have to manually edit the translations in, so I actually had no idea what the singer was saying most of the album; however, that honestly didn't matter in a way. I mean, his voice is so freaking good that it alone manages to carry an emotional weight with it just by sound alone. The best way I can describe his voice is almost like something you would hear out of a church or from certain tribes. Of course, the variety of genres on here forces the singer to mildly adapt his voice for certain situations as well, yet they sound flawless in every one. Like I said, I am barely able to understand anything off of this album, yet I was able to translate some songs. I did look up some translations of songs as well, and I can say that this album has some lyrical genius in it as well. While the lyrics definitely sound better in the language they were intended to be heard in, they're still very poetic and artistic even in a different language. That's all I'm really going to touch on with the album's lyrics since I feel as if I can't truly grasp the nature of them. I can still say they're great nonetheless. In fact, I can say that about this album as a whole. It's perfect and so, so beyond its time. I mean, there were points where I felt I was genuinely listening to something from another world. There were moments where I forgot I was listening to an album made in the 70's as well. Honestly, one of the main reasons I even started this extremely lengthy challenge was to find an album exactly like this. I wanted to find a truly hidden masterpiece which many had not heard before. I think I've found exactly that. It's albums like this that motivate me to continue through this journey. It's perfect. There are no better words to describe this album other than that. I will definitely be re-listening to many songs off of this album. ============================================================ Clube Da Esquina Score: 10/10 Song Average: 9.1/10
This was a difficult rate for me. It was quite a long album and I don’t understand the language. Sometimes the message of a double LP can be lost on this listener if he isn’t familiar with what is being sung… However the musicianship broke the language barrier. Music, the universal language understood by all, allowed me to feel and understand a bit of what these two artists were trying to convey. I think their musical style was varied and mixed quite well. Between spanish ballads, poppy songs to clap along with and songs filled with deep bass and heavy guitar, this album has something for just about everyone with an open ear. I look forward to one day adding this album to my collection.
What’s not to like? Fun grooves, interesting harmonies and chord choices, well recorded. Lots of unique and cool instrumentation. I don’t know much about this genre but this seems like a good representation of it.
Strong 4,5
These two were absolutely cooking with this album; it feels so nostalgic even though I've never been to Brazil. Favourite Songs: Tudo Que Você Podia Ser, O Trem Azul, Um Girassol da Cor do Seu Cabelo, Trem de Doido, Nada Será Como Antes. Least Favourite Songs: Cais.
Wow! Just wow! What a truly cool album! I had never even heard of this guy. I know I've complained about some albums not belonging on this list, but I wouldn't have even known about this one without it. It has the melancholy of modern alt rock with the melodiousness of The Beatles...all with a Brazilian twist. A truly beautiful album.
easiest 5 till now.
Brazilians are criminally underrated in the global music scene. Artists like Jorge Ben Jor, Antônio Carlos Jobim, João Gilberto, and now Milton Nascimento & Lô Borges prove how deep and timeless their artistry runs. Clube da Esquina feels completely authentic, the album cover perfectly mirrors the music inside: intimate, personal, and full of soul. The singing is beautiful, the compositions are rich and unpredictable, and the instrumentals are stunning in their emotion and subtlety. It’s small in scale but huge in feeling. 9/10.
Funny this came up so soon after Caetano Veloso. One of my pandemic diversions was getting into some of this incredible Brazilian music from the 60s and 70s. This one tops the list, maybe alongside Jorge Ben’s Africa Brasil. A sprawling work from a group of incredible musicians, it’s a veritable Brazilian White Album, and honestly it’s more consistent than the actual White Album.
Wow! A hidden gem. The melodies are transcendental. I knew the first track but the entire record is one I will surely return to. Reminds me a lot of some of my favorite 70s albums from Lebanon and Iran!
This right here is exactly why I'm doing this project. I have heard of this album, but I've never really thought much of it. It's one of those that I have an awareness of given it has a reasonably large presence in online music discourse, but I've just felt like I've never had a reason to listen to it. But I'm so glad I have now listened to it, because I absolutely love it. It's so accessible to western audiences, but still shows off so much of its more traditional Brazilian sound. And of course all around the vocals and instrumental performances are just fantastic and really act as the backbone of this album's brilliance.
Excellent album
An album I’m blessed to discover. Absolutely fantastic. Me to a tee
This easily became one of my favorite albums of all time
Listening to this made me feel really good.
more excellent brazilian music from this list! these songs are all so fun and lively and interesting, and pivot between genres, keys/tonal centers, and grooves with ease. i still don't speak portuguese, but that's never stopped me from enjoying these albums. favorites: Tudo O Que Você Podia Ser, O Trem Azul, Um Girassol Da Cor De Seu Cabelo, San Vicente, Paisagem Da Janela, Lilia, Trem De Doido, Nada Será Como Antes
aah endlich wieder brasilie. erste song suuuper schön meeega groovy. cais super schön und wenns uf klavier wechslet haaaammer. ich lieb cravo e canela. die höch gitarre die bitz verzerrt perkussion woow. dos cruces very spanisch arabischi (?) melodie und meeega ufbau i love it. im girasol da cor dingsbums au super schön, s isch alles sehr überleit sehr ruhig. is povos au insane schö, aber es isch etz nöd alles mega groovy und s hockt chli uf de gliche melodie immer. cool aber beheisteret mich nöd glich wie anders uf dem album. um gosto de sol suuper schöni melodie wooow. trem de doido suuuper geil so fiini harmonies und fuzz gitarre drüber de bass het soo viel platz ufff. YO DA ISCH GLAUB KNAPP E FÜFI. so so kreativ so schöni melodie so warm sanft beruhigend und mengmol brichts uus. super super.
I had never heard of this album until 2 days ago when I discovered and had listened to it three times. I was shocked to see it come up on this list as my fourth to last album having just recently discovered it. I was likely going to listen to it today regardless. Anyway, this album is gorgeous. It might be a bit long, but it's rich and packed with incredible songs. I love it.
Finally, something to break up my seemingly never-ending streak of 3 stars. Reminds me a lot of Gustavo Cerati, just without all the electronics. There's always something about good Latin music that feels both really strong and really relaxing at the same time. This album especially feels like I could sleep-dance to it. Both singers have amazing voices in their own ways and the whole album is absolutely beautiful. I can see why every Brazilian grandma knows and owns this album.
So refreshing. Feels like getting out of the pool and eating a yummy sandwich, drinking super cold lemonade while the sun shines on you.
Something so raw and genuine about it. Love Portuguese language. One of the list's best discoveries
A masterpiece of quiet revolution. 𝘊𝘭𝘶𝘣𝘦 𝘥𝘢 𝘌𝘴𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘯𝘢 sounds like nothing else from its time — or any time, really. Combining Brazilian folk, psychedelia, jazz, Beatles-inspired pop, and symphonic textures, it creates a sound that’s both rooted and cosmic. Milton Nascimento’s voice floats somewhere between earth and sky, while the arrangements shimmer with emotional and harmonic depth. Few albums feel this free, yet this focused — this ambitious, yet this intimate. More than a landmark in MPB, it’s a timeless, borderless piece of art. An album that feels like a place you want to live in.
Excellent melodies and harmony
Atmosphérique et doux, avec des pointes coquines. Tantôt mélodieux, tantôt rythmé. J’ai adoré
trop bien
BELOVED !!! been listening to him and brazilian music since the 80s and am still entranced/obsessed - if you don't know Milton, you are missing out, I LOVE HIM! So so many wonderful tracks of his, but this album - track 1 Tudo o Que vocè podia ser is one of my favorite songs of all time I am guilty of playing that one on repeat like 10x in a row. lovelovelove pure enchantment
This album is part of a an explosion of creativity amidst the dark days of an oppressive Brazilian regime. A new generation taking tradition music and adding new textures and ideas. Merging past idioms with the musical experiments happening around the world. What comes through is the joy of pure expression. The sound of artists playing in a room for months in end and expertly captured - the production is absolutely stellar. The double album length and concept allows songs to breath and ideas to flourish. Even the instrumental interstitials are sublime. It's empowering to hear this sort of joyous exploration that gives hope that great art will emerge even in the darkest of days.
What a gem. One of the best things i never heard of the gennie has chosen. Great stuff
Gran descubrimiento
Voice of an angel
My first 5 point go to Brazil! :) Note to myself: Try drawing along this album
Another one of those albums I only found out about because of this challenge, and I absolutely love it. I expected a banging latin album that would have me dancing. Instead it was super a chill and relaxing jaunt, especially while out walking the dog on a cool morning. 4.5 / 5
I was totally unfamiliar with this album. I really enjoyed it.
Always happy to get another World music album. I am a music over vocals guy so everything being sung in a different language is fine with me. It's mostly the rhythms that get me with Brazilian music. Outstanding.
If Milton Nascimento or Clube da Esquina as a movement were North American or European, it would be as big as the Beatles. I say this without fear of being wrong. The contribution and artistic quality of this album surpasses the revolutionary feat of the Liverpool quartet in the music industry. Musically speaking this album is much richer than anything released by the Beatles. And I say this knowing that Clube da Esquina was influenced by the British group. As a Brazilian, I have to praise my culture and leave aside the colonized view that only Eurocentric cultural production is of the highest order.
Loved most songs - only a couple of unlistenable ones on such a large album.
I felt like I was at a beach
It was a Spanish album I don’t understand but the 808s were beautiful so 10/10
My kind of jam. Calming.
So imaginative and full of life. Beautiful melodies
An absolutely beautiful album. Even without knowing the words, the music itself was so dynamic and catchy and powerful that it earned a five star rating.
Literally one of the coolest things I've ever heard. Like I'm actually floored. It's psychedelic jazz rock but also has folk and bossa nova elements too, and it's done in such an effortless way -- truly incredible. Finally something that actually belongs on this list and isn't just something that sold a lot of records in the '80s.
Incredibly easy 5 stars. I’ve been loving the MPB sound, and Nascimento in particular, introduced it to me when I was just starting high school. Just an incredible record I will never grow tired of.
And I'm all for it. Ik heb me uitstekend vermaakt. 9/10 Highlights: O Trem Azul Dos Cruces Um Girassol Da Cor Do Seu Cabelo Clube Da Esquina N2 Paisagem Da Janela
Amazing how true, fascinatingly simple and deep music can be. Strikes my chords with nearly every second. Love this non-tacky folk - I wish I had this on Vinyl
Beauty
Albums like this are what makes doing the 1001 project rewarding. Truly a hidden gem. Favorite track: um girassol other picks: tudo o que, o trem azul, cluba da esquina, um gosto de sol
A super long album, on which I can barely understand a word, that’s varied and doesn’t drag once. It was a true musical odyssey, and one I very much enjoyed listening to. A legit accomplishment.
One of the coolest albums I've ever heard.
This is a really lovely and rather lengthy record consisting of so many beautiful little scraps of songs that never overstay their welcome. I always enjoy it, and I’d recommend listening on speakers instead of headphones. My only criticism could be placed on the panning—during some phrases, the balance is unbelievably out of whack. For example, the music might merely consist of piano and vocals, but both elements are for some inexplicable reason shoved over to the extreme left! Still, technical annoyances like that are largely attributable to the trends and tendencies of the era in which the album was made. I can’t knock the score for such a small matter.
never hear before, positive and sounding cheerful
Track two with the heavy panning is an odd move. Maybe makes sense in context of the lyrics. First track was great though
"Clube Da Esquina" łączy brazylijską duszę z psychodelią i poetycką melancholią. Jeden z moich ulubionych albumów na tej liście, łatwe top 5. Bogactwo emocji i brzmień: smyczki, subtelne harmonie wokalne, jazzowe progresje, gitarowe eksperymenty. Ten album się nie spieszy – on płynie. Nie wiem ile razy już go przesłuchałem, ale to za każdym razem mocne 5.
Probably the most interesting and engaging album I've listened to in a while. This album is a heater. It's a Brazilian album from 1972, genre is MPB or kind of folky, rocky, Orchestra stuff. It's so emotional throughout the whole thing. I dint speak Portuguese but there is just a lot going on through it all. Pitchfork says the album us mysterious and plainspoken, haunting, and sublime and I would agree. Vocals are great, every song has some cool background stuff going on, it's just so complete and engaging. Would recommend just getting lost in it. I listened over several sessions, as it ss a bit long and my drives are a bit short, but I always instantly got back in.
listened to the first time a little after this album showed up here on dec 25. not something i normally would've picked out before but really loved. have listened a couple times more since then and have tried some other milton mascimento albums. think my favorite song is paisagem da janela. a nice christmas present
Thank you I'm happy I got this album at this particular time Favorites: Trem De Doido
Clube da Esquina is a double album by the Brazilian music artists collective Clube da Esquina, originally released in 1972. Wow, this was super cool. I've always seen that album cover but this is the first time I'm listening to the record. Super airy production on here. They really caught a perfect balance between traditional Brazilian folk (?) and psychedelic pop. It's very dreamy in places. There's even some fuzz guitar on here! A pretty perfect album to throw on and smoke a joint to. This definitely warrants further listens but I'm feeling good today so I'll throw a 5.
It's the only album so far on this challenge (600+ albums) that I listened to three times. What a captivating, beautiful and smooth album. It's brilliant that is was made over 50 years ago, it sounds as fresh as it was released a few years ago. I don't understand the language but I read it's one of the best and most influential Brazilian albums of all time. I am happy I discovered this gem thanks to this challenge.
lovely
5/5
One of the best Brazilian albums of all time. In par with Acabou Chorare.
Properly unbelievable record.
Fantastic. Loved this. 5/5
Absolutely one of the hidden gems I had hoped to stumble upon when starting this journey. Gorgeous trip from beginning to end.
I don’t speak Portuguese so I don’t know what the songs mean and I’m purely going off sound. And based off of sound alone, these songs are absolutely amazing. This may be one of the most enjoyable albums I’ve ever listened to. This is why I signed up for this project, to find albums I normally wouldn’t come across, not another best of or live version of a Beatles album. I will definitely be looking more into the artist to find out about this album and what they’re singing about. I highly recommend this album. I added so many songs to my favorites.
A landmark in MPB. A beautiful genre shifting epic.
É tudo o que poderia ser.
already knew it is beautiful, like the person sughested to me
flawless
An absolute blast from start to finish as your entry into Brazilian music.
This is an undeniably pretty record. Lots of good genre variations throughout while still being a true Brazilian record. Some jazz, samba, 60's/70's lounge and pscyh rock, pop sensibilities, folk instrumentation. O trem azul is beautiful. Nuvem Cigana is like a big band song. Don Cruces has this very dramatic build/change halfway through that reminds me of bullfighter music for some reason. The playing and the vibe is just nice. Club de Esquina No2 and Me Dexia Em Paz are both beautiful guitar focused ballads. Os Povos is very beautiful/lots of good singing/simple song structure. I think I had massive expectations with this record based on the praise of it I've seen and I'd say it delivered. It may be a little too long/too varied as some tracks don't deliver as hard or feel out of place (looking at you Um Gosto De Sol sounding like a scott walker song or Paisagem De Janela sounding like a island vacation commercial or Trem De Doido's very fuzzy guitar leads). However, even those songs are still good songs.
5 out of 5. Like a lot of these albums don't know what to expect going in but this double album was magnificent and I would consider adding this to my own personal collection. The bossa nova, folk, psychedelia, and mix of other styles is smooth and a joy to listen to.
I just had tacos and margaritas before listening to this album. I love it. I love acoustic guitars and fuzzy electrics guitar solos. It seems to jump around and not just repeat itself. I will be coming back.
Smukkeste sange. Meget livsbekræftende. Næsten perfekt synes jeg :)
Already have this in my library from some MPB cruising I did a year or so ago. A really nice album, great sounding, good vibe overall. Great collection of music from that area of music.
I've had two big double albums back-to-back - it was Songs In The Key Of Life yesterday, and today this offering from Brazil that I had never even come close to hearing of. I liked the Stevie Wonder, four stars, and did not expect this to match up. I was wrong. This is so much more enjoyable. I have no idea what the lyrics are, but the musicality is just so enjoyable that it doesn't matter. Quite lovely.
Didn’t understand a single word they said but it was still a 10
Really good - extremely pleasant listening. Highlights - Nada Sera Como Antes Paisagem Da Janela Dos Cruces O Trem Azul
There was one part in one song that I heard when I was out gardening that sounded vaguely like the ice cream truck but it was like it was right behind me and it kind of startled me. Other than that very good and not threatening
I’ll always remember this clip I saw of Pharrell Williams speaking with Rick Rubin where he explains how much more of an impact good chord progressions have on him over fancy and technical time signatures. He describes them as coordinates that bring him somewhere. I found that really profound, and it honestly changed the way I look at music. I haven’t experienced an album that really made me look back on that clip and think about how right he was in a long time. But this managed to bring that back for me. I’m not exactly sure what it is about musicians in foreign countries like Brazil and Spain, but they understand that concept of powerful and moving chord progressions way better than we do over here. We just don’t do it as well. This album transcends the realm of just your traditional psychedelic pop album. It is so much more than that in every way. Of the ten thousand other albums from the same time period that fit under the same umbrella which you will find on this list, this one is absolutely worth your time the most. Something about this album left me a little speechless. It lies in the category of albums I really love that leave no stone unturned. No moment of this feels like it’s lacking. Even on the few songs I don’t like. It is near impeccable in every manner. I don’t know if there is any way this could be improved. I can’t think of a sound or an instrument that would need to be added to make this better. They hit every mark. The way this evolves on traditional bossa nova and is wholly unique and very inspired at the same time is miraculous. It sounds incredible production wise, and every instrument is layered masterfully. There were so many moments where a particular arrangement would shock me with how out of place and simultaneously perfectly in line it felt with the rest of the album. I urge anyone reading this to sit down and really sink into this album. It is something very special. Rating: 9/10
Best find from this list so far, by far. Absolutely beautiful, has so much soul and there is not a single bad song on the album as a whole. 5/5
Holy SHIT this album rules. I've seen it here and there over the years, and heard about its importance in Brazilian music history. But I did myself no favors by sleeping on it until now. It's a lush, beautifully orchestrated psych/pop record with unexpected twists and turns on virtually every track. There's instrumentation happening here that I've never heard. Think Pet Sounds with more flamenco guitars. Not to mention how timeless the production sounds. I'm baffled by the fact that this came out in '72. Extra points for the cover, which might be one of the more visually striking album covers I've ever seen.
Imagine zooming in on the lifecycle of several seeds (these songs)—each blossoming into a distinct, striking flower—then zooming out to behold how every vibrant participant played its part in forming a garden (this album) of immaculate, harmonious beauty.
This is the kind of album that is a bit hard to review, simply because it wasn't written for or out of my cultural context. There is much to like here for me. The instrumentation is excellent. The singing is good. But man the entire thing is just so different from what I would normally listen to. I think it probably deserves 5 stars for what it is.
Альбом очень жизнерадостный настоящая бразилия
Pretty genius.
Really cool album which is hard to describe. A very unique blend of sounds with each song providing some serious surprises.
Trem Azul is one of the best songs ever made.
This album was many peoples first introduction to Brazilian music. This album is so soothing and listenable, timeless. Since I don’t speak Portuguese, the album plays like an instrumental work. The soft lyrical singing is like a fine tuned instrument. I love this album and am glad to be reminded of it so I can add it to my current rotation of music. It's perfect.
This is possibly the most conflicted I’ve been on rating an album so far. The political climate of 1972 for Brazil underscores a lot of this album, and there’s a passion throughout it that’s so easy to feel, but probably very hard to understand in 2024 without an innate knowledge of the subject that I just don’t have. Let me be clear: I’d be a moron to not acknowledge that this is a good album. It does not sound like it came from 1972 at all – there’s an exploration of so many genres here that it feels like the album had an incredible vision of what music was gonna be for at least the next 20 or 30 years, if not longer, and it’s all carried by two things: guitar playing that simply feels timeless, whether it’s acoustic, electric, or bass, and absolutely passionate vocals by Milton Nascimento & Lo Borges that you can feel even through the language barrier. My confliction is not “is this good or bad” – it’s do I give this a 4 or 5? I feel like I can’t give it a 5 because of that language barrier, and how I don’t think I can fully enjoy the album because of that, but I’d also probably be a moron to not give it a 5 out of pure trust in how cathartic this album must have felt in 1972, and how well it’s aged into modern times; so many of the other 70s albums we’ve heard have occasionally had mixing issues or choices that clearly dated them. If we were going by 10, it’d be an easy choice to just say 9/10 and get it over with, but for a 5 point scale, I think I have no choice but to round it up, just out of respect for nailing everything it tries to do.
no notes. i just really enjoyed that.
E lá se vai mais um dia… This made me miss my parents.
Totally enjoyed this. I had never heard of this artist. Reminded me of Buena Vista Social Club but more melancholy.
I'll listen to anything Brazilian.
Amazing vocals, can feel the emotion in the voice. Highs and lows in terms of energy throughout the album, great listen. 4.5
This is the shit I came here for. Fantastic. Loved this.
Very chilled and laid back I really enjoyed it!
This is an amazing album. I listened to it dozens of times during COVID. Perfect intersection of post bossa Brazilian weird. Some of the songs are so moving! It’s a beautiful listen up close, and also a great backgrounder. A classic! 5/5
5.0 + I get lost in the echoey halls of this pan-genre masterpiece, mesmerized by elastic guitar fingerpick-strumming, reverb-laden vocals and a panoply of jungle-like percussive splashes.
Classic
Very niceee
A great album that shows how much is going on in Brazil music wise. Is this tropical rock or how it's called? Maybe even better.
So many gorgeous songs. It took me three lisitens before I realized I had heard O Trem Azul before, being covered by Elisa Regina. I loved the call back, it gave amazing context.
What an interesting record. So many twists and changes of direction in most of the songs. It's a strange mixture of pop, classical, psychedelia and whatever the Brazilian version of flamenco is, but it works for me and absolutely loved it. One of the best things I've heard this year. A low 5.
After a batch of albums that I couldn't listen to more than two songs comes this masterpiece. I have no words to describe the greatness of this album.
Wistful, intimate, warm, and ethereal. From pop to rock to folk with touches of bossa nova, Beatlesque psychedelia, and full of lovely arrangements and orchestrations, ‘Clube Da Esquina’ is wonderful. I have no idea what Milton Nascimento or Lô Borges are singing about, but I know that I want more of it.
good
Holy shit, this is awesome. The singing, the influences, the gorgeous chord progressions, and how ahead of it's time it feels. This is a powerhouse of a double LP with both singers bringing their S+++ game. Perhaps it's a little long, but it's hard to notice when every song is a banger. The Beatles influences are clear, but Borges and especially Nascimento take those influences and run, making one of the best pop albums I've ever heard. You can hear influences that inspired pop and rock bands all the way up through the 90s, and the fact that there's some that won't like this because it's not in English is a crime against themselves. I don't understand a single word and it's already a five, so imagine what the lyrics bring to the table. I adore this, were it not for Kimono My House this would be my favorite album so far.

Awesome
At its best, sublime, and at its worst a bit generic. Overall, love the mix of Brazilian folk & psych-rock. Have to remember this one for a midsummer road trip
What a great album. Lots of elements that we see get used by other bands in later decades, different types of songs all over, real fun to listen to
"Clube da Esquina" is a double album by the Brazillian music collective Clube da Esquina and credited to Lô Borges and Milton Nascimento. It also features arrangements by Eumir Deodato and Wagner Tiso and conductions by Paulo Moura. The music is generically classified as baroque pop, folk and pyscychedelic pop but more specifically MPB (Música Popular Brasileira or Brazillian Pop Music) which is post- bossa nova combining jazz, rock with Brazillian samba, samba-canção and baião. Yes, this album incorporates many styles often within the same song. This album is extremely important in the history of Brazillian music. "Tudo Que Você Podia Ser" begins the album with an acoustic guitar. It's melodic pop with a hint of samba. Nascimento comes in with a clear, powerful, tenor voice. This would not sound out of place as a 70's country rock ballad. The drums are more prominent in "O Trem Azul." Both acoustic and electrical guitar. Vocal harmonization. A 60's pyschedelic pop feel. Beautiful sounding. "Cravo e Canela" has a Spanish acoustic guitar with subtle bossa nova beat. The soft-loud-soft dynamic. I immediately thought of Paul Simon. Maybe, when I next hear Paul Simon I will think of these guys. "Um Girassol Da Cor De Seu Cabelo" starts out slow and melancholy with its the piano and beat. The drums kick in with strings and we're in Beatles territory. The drum picks up the pace and now we're into something entirely different. An album highlight. "Clube da Esquina" is mostly instrumental with an urgent beat, subtle guitar and background vocals. The vocals are in the background and more part of the instrumentation. Wow, I feel like I'm placed in 80's/90's alternative rock. "Paisagem Da Janela" has a simple beat and sounds like a simple, happy and poppy 60's song. Nice harmonies. Alright, we got a Latin beat in "Me Deixa Em Paz." Tenor voices of Nascimento and Alaíde Costa reaching high octaves and also using falsettos. The bossa nova beat kicks in a little harder. Lô Borges takes over vocals on "Trem De Doido." Hey, this is rock and we're back to the 70's. Great drumming and a Carol's Santana-esque solo. This is a great album. I don't know if I've heard an album that switches styles within and between songs so flawlessly. When a song starts don't expect it to end there. The variety: baroque pop, samba beats, pyscychedelic pop, 70's rock and pop and 80's/90's alternative music. And then you add Nascimento's incredible tenor voice. Yeah. A album everyone should hear.
Melhor álbum de todos os tempos amo demais
God I fucking love this album. First album so far that I’ve listened to already. fuck this album is gorgeous. Clube da esquina No2 sounds like absolute heaven. I haven't listened to the album the whole way through in ages and hearing the second half particularly is so refreshing and glorious bruh. this is exactly what a double album should be. broad range of bangers, chunes and emotional rollercoasters. if only I knew what they are on about. when he says asi vivamos seperados in dos cruces 🔥 (basically the only lyric I know cos its the same as in spanish). Paisajem da Janela is such just a feel good swayyey dancey vibe. This album stands beside Songs in the Key of Life as one of the all-time great double albums bruggy. Holy fucking shit when the bass comes in and the instrumental changes in track 13 what the heck. This album sounds so fucking good it's insane. Get your best headphones and fucking get auditory heroin for an hour. fucking god trem de doido is gorgeous. this album sounds so modern for 1972 its insane. what te fuck. also this album cover goes fucking hard. album of the fucking life. I wish trem de doido was longer that was insane. this is easily the best album on the challenge yet. im sorry replacements im sorry Hendrix this is just it. it is insanity how good this album is. oh yay this song title is the same as in spanish. track 20 nothing will be like before. ill try figure out lyrics. he'll nah there's no lyrics on Spotify. this arrangement is gorgeous. I know I've used that word many a time here already but its bleedin true wow. What an album!!!!!!!
o homem voz, baita som e letras, BR esqueça tudo
love it this album go crazy
CLASSICO BR!
This was a cool album! I wasn't 100% jamming on it, but i suspect that if i had any degree of Portuguese fluency it'd be 5 stars for me, so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt.
Unexpectedly awesome, tracks were varied but equally good. My favorite was Nada Será Como Antes
Got into this album a couple years ago after listening to Wayne Shorter’s “Native Dancer” album a lot. Love his voice and style. Really cool tunes and arrangements. So many songs on here. The title track is my favorite and Cravo e Canela (there’s a really great live Flora Purim version!)
Wow this is awesome! Never heard this before but 5 stars for the beautiful guitar voicings. Definitely coming back to this one.
Holy SHIT this is already beautiful. Obviously I don’t speak Portugese(?) so i have no inkling of what’s being said but it is PRETTY DAMMIT. It’s also so stylistically diverse and some of the guitar work especially is what some indie bands are still doing today. 90% of this album could be released this very second and it would not seem out of place.
Nicely done, very chill, reminded me of Japanese pop in places.
Beautiful easy listening. Rightly on this list.
Good
Loved this one, very diverse, from laid back to melancholic to even Beatle-esque and a real beautiful last song. Full 5!
Great album with great sadness.
Hippie vibes
Big fan of this one! Wasnt sure what to expect, but i recognized the album cover instantly and knew this one is highly regarded.. I love the singer-songwriter and traditional aspects of this record, but it also uas exceptional production, and feels cinematic at parts, which really surprised me. Will definitely listen again, and a few songs are going in to my regular rotation Faves: Todo o Que Voce Podia Ser Dos Cruces
Probably my favorite album coming from Brazil
Discover this album a couple months ago and it's already on my playlist. One of the best if not the best brazilian album
With flubs, it feels live, musicians in the moment. Interesting and beautiful chord progressions and melodies Strange production choices.
This is really quite wonderful. Milton's voice soars beautifully, sometimes strangely, above this beguiling mix of surprisingly western music that is sprinkled with splashes of Latin flavour. It is different, yet familiar.
Bonito disco.
I didn’t know what to expect from this album but I loved it!
Captivatingly beautiful. Or beautifully captivating. Either way, beautiful and captivating. It's feeding my soul today. I love it.
The cover of this album is remarkable. My interest was piqued immediately. What is it about Brazilian music that is so listenable? Is it the amazing percussion? The sound of Portuguese? Those rhythmic guitars? Maybe it’s all of that and more. This album had a lot of unique twists on the Brazilian sound and seemed to experiment quite a bit with styles and sounds that gave this great variety. It went in directions I didn’t expect. This is something I think I could have only discovered here. I love it!
Great use of stereo in this one. Loved the production. Lots of cool uses of different instruments. All in all great album
Really fantastic, ethereal and rocking at the same times occasionally.
je songe à déménager à Rio
Was not expecting this. Smooth, ecclectic, not hanging around. A new little joy that I'll be revisiting.
Buenísimo.
that was a really fun album with some beautiful compositions overall just a really beautiful experience I’ll give it an 9/10
a lovely brazilian jazz fever dream. rich, mixed instrumentation and a surprise every track. a real box of chocolates.
floats along very nicely indeed
Not heard or thought about this album for years, listening to it again made my day
Brazilian Spinetta ┏(・o・)┛♪┗ (・o・) ┓ pero también (⌣́_⌣̀) tudo bé
Something about music sung in Portuguese that just sounds different. The instruments, vocals, harmonies, and theme are on point here.
Lovely
Had never heard this before but loved it! Sent me down a Brazilian music wormhole. Trem De Doido has an amazing guitar part.
brasilian! and quite lovely :) work on the portuguese kid :)
Production: 16 Songwriting: 15 Innovation: 15 Bangers: 20 Emotional response: 18 =84 This was BLOODY GORGEOUS
Loved it. The soul of the guitar was something special.
This had many more different looks than I was expecting
Brazil lost the World Cup but at least they still have this album
It’s a double album in a language I don’t understand, so it was a bit overwhelming in first listen. Love the first track, was em excited, but kind of got burnt out long before it was done. There are multiple genres covered in this album so it’s unlikely anybody will enjoy every track. After the first run through I tried to just focus on each song and listen to a bit at a time and found alot to appreciate. I actually need to listen to it more! Very worthy addition to the list.
Like a jazz album, Clube D Esquina is more about the overall mood of the work. There is definitely a range of sounds and styles, but the overall impression is a sublime. Perhaps this is because I don't speak the language, but I get the feeling that is more because the impression and feel of the work seems real and true.
This was such an enjoyable album, I took a lot of songs away and ended up listening through it two times before I even realized!
Really refreshing album in this list. Hope to hear more great music from different countrys and languages. Really warm and caring sound. for sure.
Muy refrescante, después de la electrónica de los 90 y el dub de los 70.
This album is really beautiful, from the music, wich sometimes is colorful and vivid, and more deep other times, to the lyrics, i read the lyrics for the most part of the project and i liked the writing a lot. This album also has a lot of experimentation, it is really cool and beautiful. That first song made me smile so hard when i first heard it and there were a bunch of other highlights throughout the album now that i relistened to it, for how many songs there were it always kept it interesting with some genre switch ups that really caught me off guard!
Some of the slower stuff lost me but I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this; a little bit of indie mixed in
I really enjoyed this album, much more than I thought I would, since it was all in Spanish, which I don’t understand. The initial track was great as was O Trem Azul, Trem de Diodo, and a few others. I really like the melodic style that this guy has. A four star album.
Was pretty good not my usual type of listen but I could see how this could be loved it has great instrumentation I might need to give this one more of a listen
Cozy, good background
Like a mix of bossa-nova, folk, elements of prog and psychedelic. This really won me over by the end!
It’s musically great, a joyful feel to it. I just wish there was more of Lo Borges on here. He’s amazing and outshines Milton on this project for the six tracks he’s here. The first, third, and twelfth tracks are my favorites.
Always like to get a world album on this list. In terms of the list there should be more of these. This album is folky and nothing like bri'ish music, which is cool. Experiencing culture through music! I'm also a sucker for non english vocals. Sometimes the psychedelic rock part really kicks in and I found myself entranced by the music. Really good. Low 4
Almost put this of early, but with this we truly have something mystical in our hands (if the portuguese language wasn't mystical enough on its own). Pure artistic innovation in times of oppression. Something to look into further, to take the time and really listen again. This is one you truely can't put in any single "genre" drawer.
Great Brazilian Music
Great album some told me the most important album coming out of Brazil.
This is an album with very high "high points" that pulls the full album towards a 4 star despite what it's average song suggests, because there is a lot of L/R speaker stuff going on that drives me crazy. But I've loved Cluba De Esquina No2 for a few years now, as well as Tudo O Que Voca Podia Ser, and a few others.
This was generally pleasing to listen to and a fun discovery through this project. I do think it suffers a bit from the flattening that occurs when pop musicians borrow from other genres that is keeping this from being a 5-star for me.
cant believe this is from the 70s. sounds great
I loved this album. There are some slow songs but in general I think the vibe is a whole new different thing and I really like this album's personality ✨️🪴🍋
What a treat! Genre hoping with ease and I never knew what was coming next but I was excited when it did. Next listen will be with a translation to see if the lyrics match the sound. Great find.
Like it the best so faaaar yay Track 18 is my fav

Immensely enjoyable. A record I would have never heard outside this project.
GREAT first song, loved some of the other songs. Gonna check out the artists, very realxing album and really good vibes
Didn't understand a word, but a very solidly pleasant album, and for it being 21 tracks, I was actually a little disappointed when it ended.
A lot of neat instrumentation and piano, guitar lines. Quite nice to throw on in the background. Pleasant listening and doesn't demand your constant ear.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I started listening to this, but I really wasn't expecting it to remind me of the French-Canadian band Harmonium. (Their debut album would be fantastic on the album list, by the way) Anyway this is gorgeous, loved it
Really great
interesting
World albums always get a boost from me here, I love hearing things that I probably wouldn’t find through my own random searching. Some nice variety but still cohesive. 3.5/5
4.5 banger. Would listen again!!
Beautiful
Wonderful. Ranging from the joyful to the melancholic, the songs are so full of emotion and pathos. The musicianship is fantastic and the vocals are great. 100% will revisit, ideally on a peaceful and sunny afternoon.
Overall: 7/10 This album has a lot of variety, very Beatles-esque in parts while still being it's own thing. I don't normally vibe with this type of music but this is great. Fav Song: Clube de Esquina No 2
This is a pretty sweet album. It seems to be a collab album between an up-and-comer musician (Lo Borges) and an already established one (Milton Nascimento.) I liked Borges collection of songs a lot more than Milton's, he seemed to hit more than he misses here on the album. Though I know that isn't an unpopular opinion. There are some songs on here that just give pure ecstasy like "Clube Da Esquina N° 2." Just simply amazing. It's structured pretty well and has cohesiveness to it. I'm not very used to Brazilian music, I'm glad the generator has these sort of albums on here, so I can get more into non-english music and appreciate them like most other music. So yeah, this is definitely a good one. Highlight Song/s: "O trem azul", "Um girassol da cor de seu cabelo", "Clube da esquina n° 2" and "Trem de doido"
86/100. It pulls from rock, Brazilian folk, jazz, soul, and psychedelic pop, sometimes all within the same song. It never feels chaotic. There's a freedom to the songwriting, but it’s never aimless. Everything feels thoughtful, even when it’s unpredictable. Even if you don’t speak Portuguese, the feeling comes through clearly. It’s music that invites you into its world, no translation needed.
Brasilianisch
absolute VIBES! while it didn't feel as memorable singularly with one specific track, sonically the entire album flows so well together it's better to view it as a whole.

Greatly enjoyable. An hour long but it flew by.
One of the best displays of Brazilian music. Incredible sounds all over this record. So warm and tropical. The vibes are great, but if you focus on the details, the album also shows intricate playing and incredible textures. Super consistent, can't wait to listen to this on a Brazilian beach some day.
Love when a Brazilian album has some psych elements, and in particular here I love it when they let the guitar get a bit fuzzy.
great vocals and some really good tracks
Incredible album for 70's, rhythmically incredible.
Enjoyed
The chillest album I've heard.
Call San Vicente and give this a listen.
This is the kind of album that I love this list for. Never would have known about this album otherwise. It's got such a huge variety of sounds, from folky to psychedelic. It was a very fun ride.
Great
Never listened to any sort of popular music from Brazil before, and this was a really good introduction. The reverb heavy production gives even the barebones acoustic guitar tracks an almost, for lack of better words, proto-dream pop quality at times. I think another reviewer compared it to Melody's Echo Chamber? And yeah I can see the comparison. I just wish I knew a lick of Brazillian Portugeuse, because that language barrier is the one thing keeping me from fully enjoying the album. But even without knowing the language, the vocal melodies are superb throughout. 8.5/10.
Pretty good selection across genres here and the strings are constantly the centre of attention. Now knowing the context, I wish I understood the lyrics. Favourite track: Tudo Que Você Podia Ser
8/10 Such a pleasant listen, it's got enough variety to keep me interested throughout
A double album from a Brazilian duo that’s kind of a jam. Stylistically it’s pretty eclectic, but it’s mostly enjoyable. And they both have great voices. I’d listen to this again. 4/5
Milton I want to put in the same category as artists like Franco Battiato or Manu Chao. Non-English speaking artists who manages to create great, and in particular, interesting pop/rock. Perhaps it's exactly the non-english speaking what allows them to extend over the typical standards. Not required to go through the UK or US rise to fame route, dictated by the record labelsdictated by the record labels, with their formatting instincts and radio-friendliness radar. Milton Nascimento, Battiato, Chao — they were never auditioning for Anglo-American approval. Songs breathe differently here. They develop.
Muito bom. Está no meu acervo.
Notables: - Cais Definitely gotta give the whole thing a listen again, reminded me a little of Beau Dommage
Pretty bangin, 4 stars
Unlike most of the racket I like to listen to, I could put this on and my mom in her 70s would like it. It has a very nice & gentle sound, and some definite standout tunes among the bunch.
Dette var en positiv overraskelse.
lush
YUMMY first song! There's certain albums that feel like spring to me and this is one of them. It's packed full of springtime joy. I wish that this list had more music from other countries rather than just a majority of UK and US. I guess that's just the nature of the list and the person who made the list. Maybe I will be able to find one from someone who is not from the US or UK. It's just annoying that the album will be labeled "Other country" rather than Brasil. My favorite songs were probably "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser", "Cais", "Saidas e Bandeiras N 1", and"Um Girassol Da Cor Do Seu Cabelo".
that was so beautiful. GOD i love imperfect production
Something else I've never heard but really like! Saving this album too.
A nice discovery.
Really good and refreshing. The mixing can sometimes be really shit though, which is a real shame. I dont appreciate hearing the piano directly inside my right earlobe.
A great album which was an amazing introduction into Latin Music for me. A genre I'd heard basically nothing off before this album.
dance. :) Que notícias me dão dos amigos? Que notícias me dão de voce? + Eu vivo en qualquer parte de seu coração Mi favoritos: Nuvem Cigana Caida e Banderinas n1 Tudo o que você podia ser
No idea what he’s singing, but some bangers
this is pretty. I really liked this album. the voice is so soft and gentle, the vibe was happy and nostalgic in some way. 4 stars.
some nice latin jazz, I love when we get World Music on this list because it gives me the opportunity to infer the feelings behind the sounds despite not understanding a single word. I did find it ran a bit long, and it did seem to be all over the place at times, but overall it was enjoyable.
Oh hell yeah this is my jam. I love albums that aren’t in English and this one has some very enjoyable jams on it!
The depth and breadth of instrumentation on this album is pretty fantastic. It's got everything. Particularly full of bright strings and upbeat percussion, Clube Da Esquina feels vibrant and alive. You can hear so many influences, Latin, Mexican, African, European, jazz, even classical; it's really far reaching. I thought I was listening to The Beatles a few times in there. I'd not head of Milton Nascimento (or Lo Borges) before this, but the man is prolific. He's got a great, haunting voice. This album is a fun listen. I dont know Portuguese so without knowing the meaning of most of the lyrics the vocals are essentially another instrument for me, but they feel really good in every song. It was fun reading about each track on Wikipedia while listening along (and Spotify's lyrics translation feature was actually really clutch here). Songs are all pretty short but they all just work. Standout tracks are "O Trem Azul," "Dos Cruces," "San Vicente," and "Os Povos." This is one of those really cool gems you find hidden in this project. It's a bit lengthy as a double album, but it honestly moves and flows so well you almost don't notice. It's not the kind of thing I usually listen to, but this is undeniably at least a 4 getting really really close to a 5. Would love to go listen to more from these two.
So good it almost makes you forget that throughout the latter half of the 20th century the United States backed and funded coups in Brazil and other South American countries to overthrow democratically elected governments and install right wing dictatorships who were more favorable to their corporate interests which resulted in the deaths and imprisonment of hundreds of thousands of people
Overall great album. Song I like: Tudo O Que Voce podia ser, Nueve cigana, Cravo E Canela,
Rather pleasant listening
if lo borges are there, im there
This album feels like its at the intersection of so many bands I like and listen to. I hear a little My Morning Jacket, Khruangbin, and a good bit of Boogarins.
Im familiar with this, and it would be a 5 if I spoke Portuguese, but I will have to look up more of the lyrics to understand more of the songs. Paisagem De Janela will always be on the list of my favorite songs.
I gave this a 3.5 on rateyourmusic, as I do think there are great aspects to this album and great songs, but I feel it doesn't justify the length, and there is a lot that just feels like filler or makes the entire album feel like it is too much the same from song to song. Overall, though, it is quality music.
Groovy and unique, this one made for a good listen
Good album all the way through. Experimental songs, more traditional Hispanic flamenco and more. 8/10
Rather original and ahead of its time 3.6
Our second Brazilian album! This one was a lot more moody than the other one, much less dance music, but you can tell the strength of the album based on how it could evoke feeling and emotion even without the need to understand the language. Um Gosto De Sol was a standout for me. The added instrumentation for the tracks kept it from being stale despite the track count.
don't speak Portuguese. My knowledge of Brazilian music is restricted to the Brazilian albums I've heard on this list. You can definitely find more insightful people discussing this album than me. But any hesitancy I have over it may be due to my ignorance. From what I have gathered, Clube da Esquina is one of the standout works of música popular brasileira, a mid-60s amalgam of standard Brazilian genres with the recently imported jazz and rock. This album embodies the eclecticism of MPB, an eclecticism which accounts for this being a double album. They had so much to include. This makes the listener worry that Clube Da Esquina may have the basic double album faults of becoming sluggish, but I would say it largely avoids such failings, proving itself a dense yet soulful piece of music. I can't guarantee that every song will appeal, but for new listeners it’s a near perfect introduction. I pause over giving it five stars, solely because of the language barrier. This may deserve a firm five, but right now I am not the one to gauge that accurately. Did I need to hear this before I die? 100%
Loved this
The absolute best part of this project is finding stuff like this - the first song in particular absolutely FLOORED me. The vocal melody, the guitar part, all of it is just incredible. The second song is so different but also stunning. I was like "holy crap this is going to be an easy 5 album that I had no idea even existed" - at the end of the day I don't think the greatness of the opening tracks is quite sustained over the whole thing though. Um Girassol is a nice sort of laid back song with cool orchestration, and Clube da Esquina No 2 is also great. I love the laid-back Brazilian vibe without it sounding like bossa nova. Maybe not quite a 5 on this but pretty darn close.
This is what this project is all about. Really enjoyed exploring something new. Felt like enjoyable time travel but with still a high quality of recording. A couple songs got a little droning on with the vocals, but on the balance, loved the instrumentation, percussion, chord progressions were often interesting and unexpected.
かなり自分好みの曲(3曲目)と出会えたけど、アルバム自体の長さやバリエーションなどで自分の好みからは少し外れている。ミックスも変な曲があったりしたけど必聴ではあると思った。
Grateful that this album was brought to my attention, great mix and sound with a blending of genres. Maybe the lyrics being portugeuse and not understanding them focused my atttention on the music.
cool
Quite lovely
Lovely Brazilian trad music / pop / jazz. I can see how the eclectic moods and arrangements make it a seminal world music “fusion” record.
I don't know what they're saying at all, but it sounds very pretty. Faves: Tudo O Que Você Podia Ser, Dos Cruces, Um Girassol Da Cor Do Seu Cabelo Paisagem Da Janela
Super enjoyable, right up my alley, will never know the name of a song but can see myself coming back to this.
Lots of sketches of cool, sort of rhythmic, hypnotic songs that span genres. Good stuff
dreamy
back to something groovy, fun, and colourful!
A nice discovery! It sounds good, lots of influences (it's quite jazzy). An album to take time for, with excellent musicianship and interesting songs.
Having now heard this, I can say with confidence that this album is likely better than every Country and Jazz album on the list.
Surprisingly pleasant.
This was super tight. Outtasite.
Very good album, this is what I’m here for! 4/5
I remember how the first time I listened to this I did not think much of it. It was alright, it was fun, but I felt there was too much happening and that it was too quick at times. There were many ideas and in my opinion not everything worked out well. Returning to it now, my perspective has changed. The strength of this album is that there is so much happening. It keeps the 1 hour+ runtime interesting and shows the diversity of the musicians. A lot of songs are catchy while others are more introspective. Reading up on the context, it is inspiring to read about these musicians making an album about friendship, liberty, and youth in a time of authoritarian ditatorship in Brazil. Great move. Great album.
Coldplay left me well, cold
The occasional drop out of stereo to being hard panned to the right, at least on the Spotify version, was really unpleasant. I'm not gonna dock any points for that because I can entirely believe someone donked up digitising it rather than it being a deliberate choice, but worth mentioning it. This was pretty enjoyable! Dos Cruces fucks hard. I'm glad stuff like this is on the list, a deep pull (as far as an anglo-centric view goes) which I'd never listen to otherwise.
Very lovely music, though I'm kinda curious if my rating would chnage if I actually understood the language.
Well done to Duran Duran on working with Milton Nascimento on their brilliant track Breath After Breath, in the 90s, as it's now allowed me to feel smug that I've heard of him. However *doh* I'd feel even more smug if I'd had the sense to listen to more of his output before. My loss! I thought this was an unusual and beautiful album. Another reviewer put it well: "Every track manages to twist and turn through several variations within 2-3 minutes while maintaining a core sound throughout the LP". I agree with that, and found it oddly timeless. Really interesting and enjoyable.
Good vibe
Deilig
D side is weak considering A/B/C . If it wasnt D side it would have been easily 5 but now 4.5
Really solid and pleasant listen. My attention did start to wane at the halfway point but it came back strong.
Great
Enjoyable, good background music.
