Reviews (page 3 of 8)
This was a juicy little album 🕺
This album is not in a genre I’m at all familiar with, but I’m so glad I got to hear it. In fact, it’s not really one genre at all, there’s a lot off variety in the songs, both musically and emotionally. The sound is often intensely atmospheric and the musicianship is exceptional. The other thing I love is the variety in the arrangements and the structure of the songs. The songs often take unexpected harmonic and rhythmic directions. All in all a real gem.
I really enjoyed this, partly due to the language difference, and having a little Spanish but no Portuguese. I listened ‘blind’, without any research but I did know it was Brazilian and from 1972. Artists that came to mind as I listened were Roddy Frame and Paul Simon. I found myself hoping that these lyrics would be as considered and witty as those two always produce. Given the subtleties of the sounds, my guess is they probably are. For example the song Dos Cruces looks (from its Portuguese lyrics) and sounds like a murder ballad! Or at least a very dark lament. Musically - production-wise - it’s really interesting and beautifully done. Much more than just ballads over strummed guitar, which is what I initially guessed we’d be in for. It’s a hotchpotch of genres. Some is folky, but other bits are Beach Boys or Beatles-ish for example. One of them (Nada Sera Como Antes) is basically a Gilbert O’Sullivan song! I’m going to guess GOS borrowed from here rather than the other way round. “If you know you know” probably applied in the early 1970s like it still does. But who knows? There seem to be two voices/artists. Who is Lo Borges?! In the end, I totally bought the idea of this being a loved/revered album. I downloaded it and I will be listening again.
I was surprised with how much I liked this, and definitely feel like I'll revisit in the future. An expansive range of sounds and styles, while kind of long it overflows with interesting sounds and shifts.
Some of the weirdest Brazilian music I've heard, mostly because it doesn't sound like what I expect from Brazilian music. The album runs a bit long but it's beautiful and surprising.
Pretty good
This was good. I started out thinking it was kind of middling, but then I realized that I was kinda picking up what it was putting down. I'll admit my Portuguese, never very good in the first place, does not translate SUPER well to Brazilian so it was kind of an in-and-out listening experience, but really this one is solid. Nothing groundbreaking, especially in 2025, but solid. I'll also admit that I found the tracks Spotify credited to Lo Borges a good deal more accessible, which means I should probably revisit. Anyway, a discovery to return to here.
Brazilian music isn’t only bossa nova, who would’ve thought? This was interesting, instead of visualising beaches and sunshine, I ended up I ended up visualising a mid century modern mansion, sitting on a leather armchair wearing a turtleneck and sipping caipirinha. Sophistication.
Never really listened to him before. Some beautiful things on here.
I had never heard this but loved it!
Loved this. Like the Brazilian Beatles, some great short and sharp, ambient and pretty songwriting. Production was cool and the whole thing had a great vibe. Will come back again
This is what I enjoy about this project. I don’t speak Portuguese and probably would have never discovered this album on my own. I really enjoyed it.
Excellent vibes, some cool Latin parts, jazzy bits, and love the fuzz guitar on Trem De Doido.
This album is bursting with musical ideas and it’s interesting to read about the making of it, with a unique collaborative structure. I wish I knew Portuguese, as the vocals are so forward in some tracks that it feels like I’m listening to a story but I have to rely on the instruments to carry the narrative. But I can still appreciate how this album weaves together so many contemporary genres in a way that doesn’t sound forced or erratic, it just melds together into their own compelling sound.
No idea what the words are but this is pretty cool. This is what I am looking for doing this, something I never would have listened to in my day to day.
This is definitely out of my wheelhouse, but I really dug it.
Ab heute nur noch Portugiesisch zum Frühstück :)
Good
Smooth latin jazz
Great listen!
Slightly long but overall good.
10/24/25. Surprised by this one, a lot of non-Brazilian influences included throughout, which leads to a more progressive sound. The instrumentals were pretty.
Heavy Beatles influence
Hands down the best Milton Nascimento record I have heard. Very much enjoyed it. Great cover art, too.
Beautiful album with variety yet a common tone throughout. I have no idea what he's saying, but he sure sounds good saying.
What a beautiful album. A RYM classic for a reason
Some really nice songs in here that caught my attention. Some of them were better off as background music. Still a really solid album, I feel like I usually like albums in foreign languages.
Good!
It's too long and varied of an album for me to really feel like I can wrap my head around it in a short amount of time, but my impression after a pair of listens is that it's very good. It's experimental, has a nice range of different sounds, and is often kind of beautiful. The lyrics are generally on a level where it's not hard for me to partway follow if I'm paying attention. Going with a 4 for an overall rating but it seems very likely there's enough really good material that it could be trimmed/tightened down into a 5-star album - or more time to get familiar with it might just push it to 5 anyway.
Enjoyed this a lot, would love to dance to
Great album, really new
Albums like this are why I like this website, I probably wouldn’t have ever have heard this lovely album if it hadn’t been for this list. The music is really great and the arrangements are very nice. The vocals are very good throughout, but I especially love Milton Nascimento’s voice, it’s so pure and expressive. 4/5
new to me but it was very cool
A lovely journey, if not a little dated for its year Still a good experience
Not too bad.
Didn’t understand a single word but it sounded heavenly at times.
Echoing everyone’s sentiment about this being a bit of a hidden gem. I’m maybe not as crazy about it as some, but this record certainly had its share of spectacular moments; specifically "O Trem Azul" is when it got real good. The craziness of "Um Girassol Da Cor Do Seu Cabelo" already felt like the icing on the cake. The title track was very blissful, it felt like a little getaway all in a few minutes. "Um Gosto De Sol" felt like it's own little Eleanor Rigby tribute in the best way possible. I’ll put this at a 4 stars for actually having some thoughtful takes on how to spice up the rock formula of the early 70’s - lord knows I’ve suffered through many an album where that wasn’t the case.
Before Fishmans was as widely accepted in online music board circles, there was Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges' Clube da Esquina leading the charge on widely appreciated foreign releases breaking into American audiences. This album is widely considered to be one of the greatest musical releases of all time, and that was quite daunting to be aware of prior to going into this album but I wanted to still try and go in with a clear mind as I had no idea what to expect. While I do not know what Milton is saying on this project whatsoever, I can still appreciate the feelings and compositions this album puts me smack dab in the middle of. It is a journey of an album that takes you across so many different sounds, styles, and emotions until it finally comes to rest at the end of its' 1 hour and 6 minute runtime. Again I do not understand a lick of Portuguese, but what I can tell you is that you can feel how Milton is portraying each word in a way that crosses language barriers to be interpreted in a beautiful way. I wish I had more to say here but I feel that more people shouldn't be afraid to cross borders musically and give stuff like this a chance because there were some tracks here that utterly blew me away once I gave them a spin.
Interesting take on all different styles of music. All over the place in a good way. 4 stars for creativity.
This is great! One of the better discoveries from the list so far, as I'm a couple hundred albums in. Absolutely no idea what the lyrics say, but who cares. The vibe is great. Summery, easy listening, jazzy in some spots, poppy in others, and lightly psychedelic throughout. 4/5 cuz it's a wee bit on the long side.
Not at all what I expected based on my exposure so far to brazilian music. The string instrumentals in um gosto de sol reminded me of the Beatles/George Martin. A good vibes listen, 4*
7/10… brasilian baroque pop / tropical
I enjoy these international albums from artists I don't know. Pretty long album, in Portuguese. Definitely sounded great as a 70s album from Brazil and I think it deserves a high rating. Plenty of different moods present in this album too.
Nice to get some Brasilian music. Several really nice songs, a few that were boring. I think this deserves repeated listening. 3.7 stars
I liked this. No idea what these songs are about but it had kind of a chill vibe. Seems like the kind of thing I'd enjoy listening to while drinking a beer in the sun. You know, if I drank beer or could stand setting in the sun.
Intricate acoustic with creative use of sound tracking across the left/right speakers. Pleasant, if unremarkable, vocals. Great interplay between guitar, keys, percussion, and bass. Excellent mixing and overall recording quality, shit is crystal. Wasn't crazy about some of the harmonic choices, but I'd imagine there's a cultural difference here and it's an objectively really high-quality record as a whole. Listened to: at Metrotech. Favorite tracks: Tudo O Que, Um Girassol, San Vicente, Um Gosto De Sol
No idea what anyone said for the last hour, but I knew it was beautiful.
Best Song: Nuvem Sigana Milton Nascimento is very talented and this is a really solid listen. I really wish I could understand the words he is saying! Overall solid, but I probably would never listen again for the simple reason that I want to understand what is happening. Simply speaking, I'm a simpleton. 4/5.
Really enjoyed this. Beautiful singing and melodies, no matter what the language. Easy to listen to. Long, but the songs are usually short and quick so there’s variation. Folksy, gave me slight Paul Simon vibes.
as someone exposed exclusively to western (british/american) music for as long as i live i don't dig latin vibes at all and usually they bore me to hell. but this album is pretty enjoyable, almost every time i reached for the skip button something grabbed my attention, i didn't skip too much and i really liked several songs. well it's much more fun than listening to the killers album so i'll even give it 4 stars
Enjoyed this one. This is the kind of album I was hoping to see more of on this list. Some really nice grooves on here. 4/5 Will listen again
Beginning was fun and exciting, there was a bit of a lul toward the middle/end that had me pause and not restart. Overall, enjoyable to listen to!
Another album I'd almost certainly never have heard but for this project. Very interesting.
really beautiful and pleasant to listen to. a bit long for my tastes but that's my own impatience. a perfect example of all the wonderful things you can find looking outside your usual music genres!
REAAADYYY perfekts album zum ufem balkon chille bi sunneschii jöö s klavier bi cais cravo e canela het mega cooli perkussion es isch soo besänftigend um girassol git nochli gäse! iwie het mich san vicente chli ad beach boys erinneret?? NOMAL BEACH BOYS DAMN trem de doido mite gitarre! s isch auchli seeeehr episch aber geiil! schochli lang, mengisch chli ah mier verbii aber e suuper atmosphäre und es paar banger. viaaa
I really like how this album flows together and how the artist has layered in the harmonies so well. I realized at the midway point, San Vicente that it had been building towards a crescendo for a while. It's hard for me to say "this song is a hit" when it comes to world music. It's more about the vibe and the aesthetic when I listen to it. So by that metric, this hits quite well. It feels like a movie score. It has such ups and downs, moments that feel like anticipation and moments that feel like a celebration. I found the album overall to be very good. Totally pleasant.
8/10
I’m going to relisten to this song because I wasn’t fully paying attention but this was a very great listening experience. Insane vocals and instrumental through out the album. This made the hour feel like 20min how much I was enjoying it. I don’t think I will be returning very much but I’m very glad I gave this a listen. 8.8/10 4.4/5
good music that is surprising when I found out it was produced all the way back in 1972.
Such a chill vibe to listen to on a road trip during actual summertime in the UK
Interesting album. Eclectic mix of Latin, Beatles, folky roots, feels lie a path breaker.
a bit whacky and very enjoyable, and I think I will like it even more with subsequent listens
Really enjoyed it
Has a few great moments, just kinda long, but easy listening. Great, after a few re-listens.
Upbeat and fun listen.
Dang, this was a pleasant surprise. This was great. Good vibes start to finish.
A unique fusion of about a dozen musical styles! It's all over the place but held together admirably well by an out of this world groove that is present in some form or another throughout the entire album. Ever wonder what it would sound like if Chopin joined The Beatles & they decided to play nothing but reworked songs from Pet Sounds with a baroque-ish Bossa nova beat? Wonder no more! This might be a 5-star album but after just one listen I don't feel strongly enough about it to give it 5 stars but that could change with a few more listens or not. Regardless an album of note.
4.5/5 The only reason this is not a 5 is I found some songs to be a little boring (but nothing bad) however a lot of these songs sent me to orbit they ate so hard. 'Dos Cruces' is for sure a new favourite for me ; it was so good I nearly rated the album 5/5. Like sooo good! I'm listening as I write this. And the song after it 'Um Girassol da Cor do Seu Cabelo' is incredible as well. In fact, now that song is playing and I think its my fav on the album. Both of them back to back DEVOURED! I will for sure listen to this album again. many times.
The reason I started this project was to find hidden musical gems. It hasn’t always worked that way but this is great. So different from my usual music but hooked me in
Never would have found this but really liked it - particularly track 8
Would never have listened to this otherwise, super glad I did!
Oh this is off to a surprisingly tasty start. O Trem Azul is languid and wonderful. Reminds me of some Japanese jazz I've stumbled upon (e.g., Fishmans) with some light similarity to Mac Demarco. Um Girassol Da Cor Do Seu Cabelo is dope. I lost a little steam / focus through the back half, but I thoroughly enjoyed this album. Closes on a more somber note, but the album had a lovely brightness about much of it and many of the songs were incredibly satisfying. Nada Sera Como Antes is a great late album standout. With more listens this could sneak into a 5, but for now, I'm calling this a very solid 4.
A bit long, and not every song is a winner, but it still has some incredible songs regardless. Also, the production on display here is top-notch.
I enjoy this
Siempre apoyo que pongan cosas que no sean en inglés. Me faltó más samba pero para su época, muy volado. Nota: 3.8
Very pleasant listen. The album ranges from some delightful easy listening to heavier more experimental songs. Even though I didn’t understand a thing and it was on the longer side, I still enjoyed the listen.
Really beautiful, so glad this challenge made me listen to this
"(Portuguese)" Listened to B4? No Tracks Already Saved on Spotify: None Standout Tracks: Tudo Que Você Podia Ser, O Trem Azul, Trem de Doido, Nada Será Como Antes Wow. What a gem. I had no idea this even existed. An amazing amalgam of Beatles and Beach Boys psychadelia with Brazilian pop, samba, and jazz. I have no idea what they are saying, but it didn't matter one bit. Such a unique and beautiful record. (84/100)
Discovery on the project: I am getting to like vintage Brazilian music, just the thing on a hot day. Probably 3.5 but rating it 4 to come back to.
I thought this was excellent. I'm somewhat familiar with Brazilian music so I didn't feel quite as at sea as I often am with other non-English music on this list. Having said that, I didn't have a ton of time to focus on this yesterday, so I'm not quite prepared to give it a 5. Still, the songs that I did pay attention to were impressive. Melodic, inventive, often playful, but there's a morose quality to this that drew me in. I'm looking forward to listening to this one again.
Predivno iskustvo slušanja. Pjesme koje imaju poentu, zaplete, rasplete, nikad nisu statične. Veoma zanimljivo i ambiciozno. Uživala sam u ovome i definitivno će se slušati opet.
Don’t care if I don’t understand the lyrics, this has many transcendent moments musically. So many dreamy sequences, lush and at times haunting vocals. Suffers a bit from sounding very dated. Brazilian Portuguese, what a romantic language.
Fun listen, an unearthed hidden gem
Woo this album slaps! Lots of variety to each track keeps the album listening experience fresh.
Overraskende bra visejazz
I wish that the 1001 Albums list had more albums like this - a genuine surprise and a perfect accompaniment to a hot and sultry day. Even though I couldn’t understand most of the lyrics, I enjoyed the changing moods and instrumentation which was almost Beatles-esque in places. Definitely something out of the ordinary!
As many others probably noted before me: we are here for this kind of stuff, unknown music from all over the world (and not yet another album from an American/British band everyone already knows). At first I lukewarm though, as it's not particularly a genre I enjoy a lot. But the album is diversed, and it gets more interesting at the end, with more electricity, perhaps more experimentation also. Nice experience in the end.
kind of like it, not too bad but not my style
ah so smooth and dance-y. I don't know what the lyrics mean but it makes me want to dance!
The vibe I want more of. Will be coming back to this often cuz this was an awesome mix of chill, beautiful and funky.
Very atmospheric. Probably more interesting if you speak Portuguese
Worth a revisit, dreamy and visceral early 70's international rock (?)
C’est très beau ! Voyage au Brésil, c’est plein d’émotion
This feels personal and important—like something that needs to be said out loud, but only in a whispered voice. Tracks like “Dos Cruces,” “Trem de Doido,” and “Lilia” hit an emotional place—each one unlocking something tender, strange, or just beautifully sad. Glad I experienced this.
For an album of Portuguese songs I couldn't understand, I added a surprising amount of songs to my library. Some of the melodies and instrumentals were catchy and vibey, I imagine this would have hit even harder of o could understand the lyrics.
I wasn't in a great headspcae when I listened to this one but it sounded interesting enough. 4 star for "I plan to revisit and get back into it at some point".
This is music that is both chill and warm at the same time. Pat Metheny is probably responsible for my enjoyment of real Brazilian music, including Milton Nascimento. I knew of 'Girl From Ipanema', but it was Brazilian and Latin jazz that caught my attention. This is a wonderful record - guitars, Milton's voice, the rhythms, all come together in such an evocative way. 'Clube Da Esquina No. 2' is a favorite.
Dragged a bit at the end, but overall very enjoyable and chill vibes!
This was a nice musical journey. There were some parts that did drag, but they were still pleasant to listen to.
These types of albums are why this project is so much fun. A lot of standout tracks and music I never would be exposed to otherwise. A fun listen.
Some interesting ideas here. Definitely worth the listen and some re-listens. Love that it keeps the listener on their toes with multiple genres/vibes throughout.
Unbelievably cool production and very diverse. There’s room for this to keep growing on me. 4/5
I'm not sure what this was, but I liked all of it.
86% Best: Tudo O Que Você Podia Ser; O Trem Azul; San Vicente; Clube Da Esquina N° 2; Lilia; Trem De Doido; Nada Será Como Antes Must-Hear? Sure
Interesting and fun Spanish music.
I didn't go into this one with too much expectation, however I was pleasantly surprised with some pretty great Brazilian folk esc music with really nice vocals & guitar work which sounded really soothing, but also sounded pretty upbeat at time, it's especially impressive that it keeps up this level of quality throughout the entire runtime, without a dull or boring moment, sure there were some lesser ones, but still enjoyable, only issue is a good chunk of tracks kind of blend together & don't stick out, mostly towards the 2nd half, even with that though it's a very consistent, enjoyable, somewhat relaxing & soothing MPB album, album, pretty great.
Kind of fun
Great album, really doesn't feel like its a double album. I was blown away the first time I heard this, although I feel like I've found better Brazillian albums since discovering this. This listening of it just felt a bit off, it doesn't really have the attention grabbing music I thought it had at first, and not being able to understand Portugese makes it harder to listen to the lyrical themes here. Still a great album though.
Blown away by Milton the first time I heard him on a Wayne Shorter in the 1970's. Followed up with the fantastic "Milton" album in 1975. Was enthralled by his music and voice for a while but slowly drifted away. Thanks for showcasing this also great earlier album.
My voibe
Didn’t know what to expect, but it was lovely. Kept a couple of tracks as favorites.
I really liked this album. Makes me wish I spoke Portuguese. Makes me wish I'd heard it a lot earlier than a few days ago. Finding out about stuff like this is one of the reasons I love music so much. Beautiful mixture of what felt like Beatles/Moody Blues/Love conceptualizations with Latin vibes and some nice funk at times. Overall felt like a really special album that you want to know the history of. Probably one of my favorite albums, but I have a lot. I would definitely recommend it. 4.5
I'm always pleased to hear non-anglophone music here. It's really very different from a lot of other things in this list, and that is refreshing.
This could be a 5 on future listens.
Very good.
Hyvä lattari-balladilevy! 4/5
I have no idea what the songs are about. I'm not even sure how to classify the music. I do know that I enjoyed this album despite all that. Exactly the sort of thing I was hoping to discover when I signed up for this list.
Highlights: Clube Da Esquina Number 2, Me Deixa Em Paz. In a nutshell: dreamy Brazilian music If you're a lyrics person and don't know Portuguese, have Google and a translator website tab open so you can get a better idea of the sentiment behind the songs. Part pop (ie Música popular brasileira), part jazz, part baroque pop, part Bossa Nova. It's nice. Overall: 7/10
Hell yeah
Chill, with a lot of different styles. Some songs got a bit boring though.
This could well be a 5 if I’d listened to it more than I have.
It's about time for another eye-opening experience from the album generator. In this case, we have the collaborative album between Brazilian singer-songwriters Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges titled Clube Da Esquina. These two met on the streets of Belo Horizonte, along with another singer-songwriter, Beto Guedes. Milton was introduced to Lô's brothers Márcio and Marilton and they started working together from there. For six months, everyone alternated roles in songwriting and production, determined to make it all work despite the cultural restrictions placed under the military dictatorship Brazil experienced at the time. The result is a double album of twenty-one tracks that act as a melting pot of various styles and uplifting lyrics. Taking influence from the likes of traditional Brazilian music, bossa nova, rock, jazz fusion, samba and psychedelia, everyone involved played with elegance in providing a rich soundscape not unlike what the Beatles and Beach Boys did a couple of years prior. Of particular note are the gentle brush of the acoustic guitars, the complex rhythm of the percussion, and the combined soft vocal effort of Lô and Milton, providing a sense of comfort and escapism from oppression. Honestly, my only problem with this album is that it's long, clocking in at over an hour. Don't get me wrong, most of these songs are well done, and the group probably felt the desire to record as much as they could. Perhaps a few of the shorter songs like both "Saídas e Bandeiras" tracks and "Estrelas" could have been fleshed out more, but what we got is still a miracle given the conditions they were under. It's clear that Clube Da Esquina had a significant impact on Brazilian popular music given how daring and creative it was. That fact alone makes the case for this list of albums to listen to before you die. The bonus was that it was an enjoyable experience to listen to in today's world, representing the best of what can come about from a chance encounter.
Phenomenal album, we'll be listening to it multiple times in the future
Proof that a language barrier does not prevent you from enjoying music. I did prefer the more upbeat songs to the slower guitar vocal duo songs but overall the hour long runtime flew by. 8/10
I unfortunately got wrapped up and distracted from this album shortly after starting it, so I wasn't really able to listen closely, which I think is ultimately okay. It is very clear that this album is special though. It's so unique and varied, crossing through plenty of genres and instrumentations all while being high quality music. I don't really have anything else to say about it, other than that this probably really does need to be heard by everyone. And maybe even multiple times. Favorite Song(s): O Trem Azul
This was new to me. Fun, creative and interesting. It’s neat to hear things from outside the US and UK.
A new discovery for me and quite a diverse soundscape of different latin sounds. Unfortunately did not have the time today to listen to the album enough times (and it is a double album) to give it full chance to grow on me. There are a couple of songs I really enjoyed like San Vicente which had beautiful vocals and reminded me a little of Vampire Weekend or Cravo E Canela (bit of Julio down by the shore) - had the whole album been in a similar vein and it would have been pushing a 5 and I would be scoring Brazilian hipster kudus. But unfortunately given aforementioned musical diversity meant that my attention waivered and some tracks just passed me by. A low 4 as would like to return to it.
More often than not there is usually a catchy break or outro introduced into most of the tracks, showing a real knack for a catchy hook amongst the haunting melodies, the jazz, the psychedelia. I wouldn't say it all works well; but as a sprawling set of intriguing songs this is a very entertaining album. Will definitely listen more.
Some this is extremely compelling. Tracks like “San Vicente” are undoubtedly beautiful. Bossonova has always sort of bored me and there was a fair share of that. The epic endings to most of the tracks have big payoff. Tarantino soundtrack caliber epicness at times.
This is exactly what I'm here for. I never heard of this album or artist before, and it's absolutely a great album which deserves a listen. Beautiful melody and composition, and haunting vocals and lyrics. 4/5
Even without speaking the language this is really good. Good energy, cool music. And the number of listen counters do a good job of reminding you, of how much music is out there, that not America. Multiple songs with millions and millions of listens.
Finally not a rock album! Interesting use of stereo fades in production. Volume levels vary by track.
This was a perfect Saturday morning album for me to start my day to. Very rich, vibrant, lush, colorful, and easy going. Definitely an album I’ll listen to again, and also another great album I never would of discovered on my own terms.
really cool, really chill album. the exact sort of thing i love to come across in this project. something completely different. it's pretty refreshing. the musicianship is really nice and i really loved the full band moments (especially when the fuzz guitar comes in). just a super neat album!
Some fun moments on here. Lot of energy in some tracks. I don’t speak Portuguese but it’s still good and dude can sing.
The range of styles in this is great. I think that's mostly how a double album should be rather than just a really long single album focusing on one or two styles.
Damn, this was a really nice surprise! I wish I understood the lyrics because musically this is right up my alley.
Dayum this is a banger only getting marked down because I wouldn’t be able to sing along
This was very nice. Nothing really just out of the background to grab my attention but it was a pleasant listen.
I quite enjoyed this. Brazilian music holds a special place in my heart, and apparently I’d spun a few Nascimento tracks in the past too (although I don’t remember them). Paisagem De Janela was the most memorable tune of the lot. An entry-level 4/5.
Beautiful music…
New music to me, really enjoyed it. I may have to attempt to learn Portuguese.
Brilliantly constructed and a pleasure to listen to. And I’ll probably never think about it again.
This is not what I expected. I used to have a lot of family in Brazil (all moved away in the last decade), and we used to listen to a lot of Brazilian music at home. I think I heard the name Milton Nascimento but I don’t remember any music and either way it wasn’t as prominent as say Caeteno Veloso or Gilberto Gil. I guess my biggest surprise here is how non Brazilian this sounds. I mean, it’s in Brazilian Portuguese and there are some Brazilian influences, but it’s not Bossa Nova or Samba. If I have to peg this to a genre I’d say this is prog rock more than anything. Some mix of Camel, Genesis and Pink Floyd, but on the mellower side of things. An extremely varied album. Great vocals and interesting arrangements.
It's a great album with great vocal performances, varied instrumentals, and interesting production, mixing and song writing choices. It's only getting a 4 because I didn't go to the effort to translate the lyrics, so there's potential depth that has gone over my head. But Paisagem da Janela would be a great pop song in any language. Thoroughly enjoyed.
One of those hidden gems I never would have found with out this list. It makes up for the over indulgence of those drippy british indie bands we usually get. Rich, vibrant, with stellar production. Just gorgeous throughout.
I can’t believe this is from the 70’s
Enjoyed that, and another album that I wouldn't have come across otherwise!
A gateway to a new world of Brazilian music
I've never heard an album quite like this before. It has a unique energy. Sounds like a few different types of Brazilian music are being woven together, occasionally taking a turn toward rock. There were moments that reminded me slightly of the airy psychedelic sound of Love's "Forever Changes" album (also on this list, a while back). I enjoyed immersing myself in this. It's a big album and a lot of it blurs together but there were at least a half-dozen moments when I had to stop what I was doing and just say "Wow" at some shift in the music or new melody being introduced.
I am really impressed with this album; there is a shocking amount of depth and complexity that I wasn't expecting from my first look at the album cover. I was expecting some traditional South American music but there's so much more to it. The harmonies are complex, the vocals are melodically interesting and the performances are great (I just wish I didn't have to follow along with a translation but that's not their fault!), and the band have some moments where they really shine, like "Nuvem Cigana" for example where the bass guitar doubles the vocal melody in the choruses. Very fun listen, I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Great album, this one. A lot of variety throughout the tracklist, which is crucial for a long album like this one. Intricately orchestrated, psychedelic, folky, and all sorts of descriptors could apply here. I do understand the language, but I'm not brazilian so the political undertones are a bit lost on me. That's fine, it doesn't seem necessary to understand those things to thoroughly enjoy this. Key tracks: Tudo o que Você Podia Ser O Trem Azul Cravo e Canela Um Girassol da Cor de Seu Cabelo San Vicente
brazilian psychedelic
This list selection of brazilian music, although not perfect, is quite good... wish it was the same for hispanic music.
Very good music player with other 70s music influences in it. No complaints
It was interesting
Really enjoyed it, but randomly got kicked out of reviewing it. I think I said something like: There is such a wide range of styles being used here, and they are all executed incredibly well, there are a few standard 'Brazilian feeling' songs, and some folk-ish ones and also some Rock'n roll ones. No real downsides at all (besides me not being able to enjoy the lyrics). Favourite songs: O trem azul, Clube de esquina no.2 (which is SOSOSOSOSo good), Trem de doido, but if I remember correctly, they are all amazing. Overall around 8/10
Imprescindible. Otros discos del 72: Debuts de Steely Dan, Roxy Music, Paul Simon, Big Star, Neu¡, ¿Fela Kuti? y Lou Reed (además de su espléndido Transformer ) Discos expecionales como los de David Bowie – The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, Todd Rundgren-Something/Anything?, Stevie Wonder – Talking Book y Music of my mind, Elton John-Honky Château, Nick Drake – Pink Moon, Yes – Close to the Edge, Miles Davis – On the Corner, Neil Young – Harvest, The Rolling Stones – Exile on Main St, Curtis Mayfield – Super Fly, Raspberries- Fresh, Genesis – Foxtrot, Van Morrison - Saint Dominic's Preview, Deep Purple- Machine Head y Made in Japan, Joni MIttchell- For the roses, Tangerine Dream - Zeit, T Rex- The slider, Kevin Ayers- Whatevershebringswesing, la banda sonora The harder they come... una cosecha excelente.
Beautiful, I haven't listened to a lot of Brazilian music but I loved Brasiliero and this is a fascinating counterpoint, really showing off the diversity of sound down there.
Interessanter Sound, schöne Atmosphäre. Ein paar Texte habe ich übersetzt gefunden, könnte interessant sein da mehr einzusteigen. 4/5
I could well imagine giving this album 5/5 if I was more familiar with it. Such a diverse range of musical styles! Some songs seem to fade out suddenly which is disappointing but overall the album was thoroughly enjoyable.
I knew this was one of the albums that the folks on rym really love. For me I thought it was really good language barriers are always hard as lyrics are so important to me but it was still very entertaining, it’s too long though and that’s my main issue. Still it’s either a 3 or 4/5 think I’ll go 4 because I don’t want want to necessarily downgrade it for being from another country so for my personal enjoyment it was a 3 but I’ll go 4… I think
This album is very sweet. Kinda melancholy too. I like Brazilian music a lot. There were a lot of nice moments. I enjoyed the mellow vibe and the smooth vocals.
World music always nice to listen to
This feels like music from a Wes Anderson or Tarantino movie. I thought it was excellent.
There is a certain sense of simplicity and beauty when listening to this album, but whether it should precede death is debatable. The pros of the album are that it is not regrettable, perhaps life is somewhat enriched by the simplicity and beauty, and maybe that is enough.
Bright, expansive, creative, and fun. A little different but a real treat. This list’s Brazilian music has been hitting so far. Best song: Dos Cruces
There is a timeliness about it that's hard to pinpoint, but you just feel that it's there.
This was a very pleasant, interesting listen. Will definitely need to revisit. Despite its length, it really didn't overstay it's welcome. Very detailed and intriguing 👍
Muy bien. De esos artistas que uno ha escuchado mencionar mil veces y que nunca había escuchado. Muy distinto a lo que pensé que sería. Me gustó.
Cool to hear.
Very nice album! Very melodious.
Fun and lots of different styles.
5 sterren ware het niet voor de stereomix
Delightful, like a ray of sunshine or a blast of fresh air. Varied and interesting, mellow and melancholic, with a likable sheen and polish atop the distinguished playing throughout. \"Club Esquina No 2\" was/is a highlight.
I really liked that, it was really calming and I enjoyed Carvo E Canela and San Vicente even though I didn’t understand of it!
Nice find
Zero expectations coming in to this but I was actually blown away a bit. First off, it felt quite fresh, well sounding and modern for coming from '72. And even though it contains quite a lot of songs with its four sides, I found all songs to live up to a high standard. Didn't really find any song that I didn't like. Conversely, I found of songs that I did like a lot, such as 'O Trem Azul', 'Club Da Esquina No 2', and 'Paisagem Da Janela' to name a few. At first, I was almost thinking of giving this 5 stars, but I realize now when going back the day after listening that I was a bit clouded by the good songs. Still, I think this is a solid 4 stars for me. Very fun listening!
This was a pleasant surprise. Even though a long runtime is generally a bad thing in my opinion this album managed to keep me entertained all the way through. It should surprising depth from sounding anything like a Brazilian Supertramp to something like Maggot Brain with it's guitar solos. Favourite song was "Um Girassol Da Cor Do Seu Cabelo" with its piano and cool riff. Impressed 4 star.
This was really cool. I especially liked the second half; it didn't feel as old as the 70s, but maybe that's because a lot of modern music is reminiscent of this and that's why it's sounding modern to me. I also just think it has kind of a classic sound that doesn't go out of style so that's probably it too.
This was niice. Not only a lovely latin beat, but it changed a lot. That iin itself is something I see lackinng in a LOT of albums. I have no idea what he is singing about, but it is beautifully emotional and seems deeply felt. It is sometimes slow and sometmes energized, sometimes in the same song! I was in no particular hurry for this to end. Albums like this remiind me of a humble academic truth: The more you learn the more you realize how little you know. The more music I listen too, the more I realize is out there to be discovered. And both those facts are very very good things!
Pretty good album. It does get a little repetitive as it goes on. I think 45 minutes would have been the perfect runtime. Maybe if I spoke Portuguese it would have helped too. Great vocals throughout the album, and I enjoyed that every couple songs they would incorporate new genres and mix in new ideas to keep the album sounding fresh. However, I still think they could have trimmed it down a little bit. Low 4
I liked it, I wish I could understand it. Portuguese I guess
Really cool sound, put it on whilst unpacking our new place, enjoyed it a lot!
Enjoyed this more than I expected, having never heard of them before. Some really great songs on here, and even though I don't have the language I still found most of them enjoyable. It is a bit long however, so it seems like one that would take a few listens to really get my head around it. It feels like a 3.5 right now, but I'll round up because I think it's a grower.
Fantastic arrangements and variety on Clube Da Esquina. Wasn't previously familiar with Milton Nascimento and his skilled band so this was another welcomed surprise on my 1001 journey. Um Girassol da Cor do Seu Cabelo was a favourite of mine, I really enjoyed the slow build to the midpoint where the organ creeps in before the frantic piano starts off and the dance party begins. Such a cool pop to that song. Again, the variety and skilled band kept me interested all the way thru and Milton's vocals were great too. Such an impressive arrangement of music, really good album. 4 stars
lovely
Grande
Thoughts before listening: I have never heard of this before. I'm thinking its going to be part of that 70s Brazilian scene that was mixing psychedelic rock with more traditional South American sounds. Review: Tropicalia is the name of the Brazilian musical movement I was thinking of. This is definitely part of that scene, but its much less psychedelic that I was expecting. This is essentially a pop rock sound with pleasant melodies and some interesting instrumentation. I can definitely hear where this album was likely a big inspiration to something like Paul Simon's Graceland, which is an album I enjoy quite a bit. I am not as distracted by the language gap as I have been on other foreign albums because I can connect so well with the music. I will give this 4-stars.
I have a strong feeling this album is something like sung poetry that I just cannot understand. I was going to listen to this album about a month ago when I found out about it but put it off since I shortly thereafter saw that it was included on this list. As an overwhelming opinion, it's a nice album to listen to. I don't think it would've made any difference if I had listened to it then or now but I liked it. The first song is incredibly pretty
Good music, nice to have something totally different on the list.
While -like most double albums- it overstayed it's welcome a bit, and the language barrier kept it from feeling truly great, I liked a lot of this albums general vibe and feel. Flourishes like the chicha organs and fuzzed out guitar gave this album sense of time and place, and the whole thing was varied amd interesting enough to make a nice soundtrack toy dog walks.
These kinds of hidden gems are my main reason to take on this challenge. Most bands would be proud of a record that is good at one of the many styles that are blended together flawlessly on this album. These people are good at all of them. Never heard of them before. Favorite song: Lilia
I certainly enjoy Brazilian/Cuban/Spanish music and this album does not disappoint. 21 songs and each has its own unique sound which is impressive. Very good!
Fun, rocky jazz fusion with random instruments sprinkled enjoy, enjoyed this alot more than expected
Damn this fusion is beautiful, not many Spanish albums I’ve heard I guess as I’ve pidgeon holed them in their own genre, but this slaps. 3.9
Hørte fordi jeg så at Robin rigtig godt kunne lide det :o Meget hyggeligt, har hørt på terrassen i Kroatien i mens jeg tegnede. solid 4/5 😇
Brazilian Pop from 72.
Amazing voice and enjoyed the guitar, just a fantastic, smooth sound
Pretty cool sounding despite not knowing what the lyrics are saying.
Great Album, I loved it! 4 stars
This one was a nice surprise and I really wish this project had more albums like this to discover and enjoy. As a double album this was a lot to take in all at once but there was a nice variety of music here and it was very enjoyable when listened to in smaller chunks.
its kinda beautiful majestic type shit 4/5
Some moments were groovy as heck, some lost me. Overall, it was a real nice listen though, I need more Brazilian music in my life. Favorite track was "Trem De Doido".
Banger after banger after banger!! now if I could just understand what they were singing about
This was a perfect Saturday morning album for me to start my day to. Very rich, vibrant, lush, colorful, and easy going. Definitely an album I’ll listen to again, and also another great album I never would of discovered on my own terms.
This was suuuch a breath of fresh air. This thing is better than most overrated albums on this list. Seriously why dont we hear more stuff like this instead of the 9th Bowie or Dylan albums? Why do I have to listen to whole discographies instead of some actual hidden gems
Milton Nascimento is a Brazilian musician that became an international star in the early 70s. Clube Da Esquina is an album credited to him, but the title is the name of an artists' collective that played on this double album. This collection of songs are vocally-centered jazz songs with bossa nova rhythms and rock influences. These songs have become central to modern Brazilian music.
Part of the reason I started this journey was to hear music that wouldn’t normally have appeared on my radar. Really enjoyed this one.
A good album, even though I barely understood any of the words. I enjoyed the way each track seemed to evolve. The opening track stood out the most to me.
Great album for eating brownies and chilling, with the odd moment you stop to think 'wow, this is really good' and have a bop :))
Milton Nascimento’s Clube de Esquina is a very smooth album. It feature’s Brazilian singing, with a sort of psyche, jazzy production. I personally find the first half of the album to be far better than the second, but none of it is bad. My favorites are O Tree Azul, San Vicente, and DOs Cruces. All in all, Clube de Esquina is a good album. best Song: O Trem Azul worst Song: Trem de Doido
You should not be able to make this vibrant beautiful music and be named Milton. 4.5/5
I often find foreign language songwriter albums challenging to fully appreciate, but this one transcends
Someone once told me that Portuguese is just drunken Spanish. I have no idea what they are singing on this album, but they sure seem to be enjoying themselves. Saúde!
Wonderful!
This was a really nice album. I love exploring new international music.
This is a new one to me. Opening track is STUNNING. Great voice and what an arrangement. I don’t speak Portuguese, but I suspect I’ll like this a lot. I did like it a lot. Really well made music with great vocals and arrangements that sometimes drift into jazz and even some psychedelia.
I didn't think I'd enjoy this album as much as I did, but it is a really good listen. I don't speak Portuguese, but the music is amazing.
This was a pretty good album. I love Spanish/classical guitar, so I'm always down for that. And Portuguese is a nice language to listen to in songs. It was nice to break out of the overly British-centric nature of this list for a change and explore music from other parts of the world, particularly from non-English-language artists. The album is really long—it definitely feels like 21 tracks. But most of the songs were interesting, catchy, vibey, or some combination of the three. I'm not really sure what general pop/rock music was like in early 1970s Brazil/Latin America as a whole, but you can hear a ton of American/British/even South Asian influences in this album. There are songs that sound like The Beatles (a lot of those, including with the South Asian instrumentation on the more psychedelic tracks), Hendrix, The Doors, Carole King, Simon & Garfunkle, The Byrds, and I could go on. There's even a bit of whatever's happening in the theme for "The White Lotus" going on in "Lilia" haha. It's an interesting mix of experimental psych rock and more traditional pop/rock sounds. Because of the language barrier, I'd probably listen to this more as background music, but I'd definitely listen again. 4/5
Lovely singing voice and guitar playing.
Pretty good but very long
Cool, but not for me
When it comes to a lot of foreign language music, as someone who's only ever known a spare few words and phrases outside of English, it ends up being essentially instrumental music to me. Which isn't to undermine or undervalue the words that're there and what they mean, of course; just because I can't understand them doesn't mean they don't mean something to a lot of people. But even if I do take the time to look up a translation, it's not like I'm gonna remember it every time I listen to a foreign language song, y'know? For me, the vocals, way more often than not, end up becoming just another instrument; another melody line. And in that light... Gawddamn, these are such great melodies, and the Brazilian Portugese is so pleasing to my ear. As a showcase for what MPB had to offer at the time, this is way more effective for me than, say, LOGICAL PROGESSION was as one for jungle. Like, for one, I'm able to tell songs apart, and that by itself is a huge advantage. This album's getting a 4 from me, but believe me, I feel it's so far the closest any album I haven't listened to before on this list has come to getting a 5.
Really good instrumentals all the way through and some very emotional songs. The language barrier doesn't stop bangers.
Wish I spoke Portuguese so I could understand what they are saying. Really good album, very chill. Favorite songs were O Trem Azul, Saidas E Bandeiras N 2, and Trem De Doido.
This looked interesting. I like MN’s work with Pat Metheny and Wayne Shorter. This has its moments. His voice is good as an instrument. The musicianship is not polished, though. The presence of Lilia elevates this to four stars.
vibes
very relaxing and enjoyable album, even though I don't understand any of the lyrics
Super chill would def listen to this again
I gave this - new to me - album a thorough listen. A few in the background and a couple quite focused listens. And I left impressed. With 21 songs it's a a commitment to devote the time necessary to fully digest the album. I find that almost all the songs have a something to offer. Some of the songs are very dramatic and some quite whimsical but most all of them hve something to offer. The singing is gorgeous and the playing and arrangements around the vocals is first rate. A really nice discovery. 4stars
Brazilian classic. Lovely songwriting, arrangement and performance!
Classic stark 4
A psychedelic pop album something like the Brazilian version of The Zombies' Odessey & Oracle. I thoroughly enjoyed it; however, with 21 songs and a runtime exceeding an hour, I think it will take many more listens to fully appreciate its depth.
Beautiful and rich. The mix is absolutely fantastic and the album takes you so many unexpected places. An absolute triumph. Best tracks: trem de doido, o trem azul, um girassol…
Jazzy Brazilian pop with nice guitar work
A steak of an album. Thick, juicy, and twitching with life. It leaves you full, but more importantly, with a lot to digest. It might not hit on the first listen, but give it some time and you'll surely come to appreciate all its complex flavors. *Heard before.
Maailman musat
Tudo O Que Voce Podia Ser // Cais // O Trem Azul // Um Girassol Da Cor Do Seu Cabelo // Clube De Esquina No 2 // Um Gosto De Sol //
Love the vibes, a subtle touch of psychedelia in a mellow soft Brazilian sound. Too long for a 5 tho
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Tudo o que voce podia ser, O trem azul, Nuvem cigana, Cravo e canela, Paisagem de Janela
This was really nice, maybe a bit long for my liking, but not too terribly. The music shifts around quite a bit, I really loved some of the transitions. I could definitely come back to this one, I'll call it a 4 with room to grow.
Musically this is fantastic. Very enjoyable to listen to with the varied instruments used. I wish I could also appreciate the lyrics but I'm ignorant and only know one language. I am tempted to purchase it as I do believe it is that good and something I would enjoy listening to multiple times. 4 out of 5.
Discoveries like this are why I’m doing this challenge. This was lovely, exactly the kind of music I love to have filling the house.
Transcends language
Shit went hard
This sounds so nice. Perfect album for a long drive. I could cover a lot of miles with this. It’s strange listening to a foreign language album when you don’t speak that language at all. You make no attempt at deciphering and just listen to the vocals like another instrument. Like scat singing. It works here because the vocals have such a nice tonal quality. Did anyone else hear the Beatles come through on track 8? I swear Ringo was on the drums. Like a Portuguese Norwegian Wood, with strings and everything.
Some dope foreign albums on this list
A collection of folky/psychedelic/jazz rock/bossanova of beautifully surprising songs. Wish I understood Portuguese to appreciate the album fully. Searching through the translations, I found songs filled with beautiful poetry of mystery and resistance. There seems to a be a theme of giving up fear and being truthful. Timely lyrics. I found these lines particularly moving: ‘Get out of this city, have a life where life exists Climb new mountains, search for diamonds At the end of the road and the dust A river with its fruits feeds me’ ‘If you let the heart beat without fear If you let the heart beat without fear If you let the heart beat without fear’ Overall a beautiful experience.
I really enjoyed this record even without understanding a word. Lush composition, lovely melodies, and Brazilian rhythms - a very nice listen.
chill, nice. You don't feel the length, it flows easily
Good
I liked this a lot!
Quite enjoyable. Didn't even mind how long it went.
Never heard of this album or artist, so this was new for me. In a nutshell, I loved it. It's really, really, really well done Brazilian lounge music, and it works.
I really enjoy Milton’s songs! So melodic and angelic. I appreciate the exploration with instruments and the audacity of blending so many styles. Magic!
This was a really eye opener beautiful and haunting
Certainly didn't know what to expect but what a wonderful album. Fave tracks O Trem Azul, Saidas E Bandeiras No 1 and 2, Um Girrassol Da Cor Do Seu Cabelo, and Trem De Doido.
A little bit folky, a little bit psychedelic - very nice! Fave track - "O Trem Azul" was awesome. Also liked the cinematic atmosphere of "Um Gosto del Sol"...
This is honestly so cool. Been a while since I've gotten a foreign album that's not only culturally relevant, but also good as hell. You win this time, Robert Dimery.
These songs sound very romantic thanks to the distinctive Portuguese charm, but the compositions are not as simple as they seem. Whenever I was starting to get bored, the next track had a different rhythm, or there was a prog-style inclusion in the middle of a song. And all of the singers featured have angelic voices.
Love atmosphere on this album
Awesome, I love hearing music from around the world.
I've been defaulting to 3 stars on these non-english records. I've liked most of them but no standouts, until now.
So mild and comforting, sounds great
I've never listened to Brazillian music before, and I have to say this was really good. But I also don't think I'd listen to Brazillian music again. Cheers!
First off, I don't speak Spanish. However, this album really smoothes you and it's production and rhythm is great. 50 years old!! 4/5
Good bedtime listening.
Really quite enjoyed this one. Each track seemed to have something interesting. Good use of different instruments. Heard some strings in there, and woodwind instruments. I would like to join the Clube.
Really enjoyed this. Was super chill. Very awesome grooves. It’s like going to a cool restaurant and they have 100 things on the menu. I’ll have to revisit
I am not usually one for music in foreign languages. Even though I'm not really a lyrics guy, I guess there's something I don't like about not even being able to listen to them if I wanted to. However, this album has some pretty interesting music all over it. It's a very long album but honestly it doesn't drag too much. Good guitar all over. Love the jump into 5/4 time for Lilia. Surprisingly enjoyable.
I am a little high right now and i definitely had listened to this album before. So chill and so exuberant.
Beautiful record, always a pleasant listen
Good, some very interesting bits in it
I really enjoyed the second half of this album more than the first, but it's been a very pleasant listen all round
A great surprise!
A consistently interesting one hour that was. I love the instrumentals in some places. And while the singing doesn't interest me most of the time (not to mention I don't speak their language), it still has nice highlights.
An incredibly diverse and enjoyable album, I need to revisit this more often
I really like the vibe of this one.
Not engaging
I think this is the second Brazilian artist I've gotten on this list? I thought it was really good though, as I said I don't have too much exposure to Brazilian artists but the two albums I've listened to, I enjoyed them both at least a little bit.
So good
Fun to listen to
Really good, I loved the instrumentation and style of this. Probably need more listens to truly appreciate, so I imagine it will get even better on subsequent listens.
Fun album! I quite enjoyed it, although it was a bit overlong. Otherwise, some tracks were really killer. 3.75/5
Wow, Spanish psychedelic chamber pop, and a double album that (mostly) doesn’t overstay its welcome? This is a true win-win. Will explore some more. B-
A landmark in Brazilian music, celebrating both the traditional and the modern. Overly long, but charming.
Muito bom
There are some really beautiful songs on here - this deserves multiple lessons to get to grips with. I really enjoyed it.
San Vicente
Excellently varied, and masterfully arranged. I never knew what sort of sounds were around the next corner, and that was exciting. But the length of the project does it a serious disservice.
Bloat is the only issue here for me, otherwise, a relaxing back porch of an album.
First track is a jam
Fantastic, versatile Baroque pop from a region’s music scene I definitely need to explore more
