Time Out Of Mind
Bob DylanThis one presented me with a bit of a quandary. One one hand Bob Dylan is an amazing lyricist and writes a solid tune - acoustic and electric. On the other hand I find his nasally voice kind of irritating.

Didn’t really know any Joni Mitchell songs other than “Big Yellow Taxi” and couldn’t say I was a fan…..after listening to this album can’t say that has changed
Classic Pink Floyd.
Such a beautiful melancholy album. The arrangements are simple and timeless comprising in the most part of Nick Drake’s voice and an acoustic guitar.
Quirky freeform jazzy organ and folk rock sounds with random pan flutes thrown into the mix….don’t hate it but don’t love it either. Steve Wnwood’s soulful vocals are a high point.
Great way to start my 1001 albums journey. Made me remember why I liked this album so much.
Great album for a lazy summer afternoon
If you like traditional Country and Western then this is for you….. I don’t
Starts strong with abrasive synths and Karen O’s plaintive, howling and sensuous voice. Then moves from punk dance to a softer more melodic tone before becoming more garagey and then finishing with an artsy vibe. Overall a great album, which I could listen to over and over
Some really amazing tracks on this album, especially love the African melodies. Unfortunately though the great tracks really made the small number of weaker ones stand out for me. Couple of less zydeco tracks and this would have been a five for me.
Cruisy reggae vibes delivering serious messages

Ok so I am big fan of 70s soul and funk. Let’s get it on and innervisions are absolute classic albums. However this just feels like Marvin Gaye complaining about his ex-wife for an hour and fifteen minutes.
Fun, funky and uplifting album. You can definitely hear its influences on southern hip hop.
Solid live album with good audience connection. Not quite as good as live from Folsom.
Loud Swedish punk energy
Seminal post grunge album. Amazing to think Dave Grohl did it himself in six days
Ok album. All obviously strong musicians. Not to enter into the debate but I feel Metallica’s classic albums are seem more varied and interesting.
Overall a bit wanky to be honest. I get it was a pretty revolutionary album and Robert Frip is a great musician. I quite liked some of the tracks but could have done without 21st Century Schizoid Man
Classic Pink Floyd.
Meh…..ok but a bit boring
Fun rockin 80s hair metal from great 70s rockers Aerosmith. Can see why this album solidified their comeback. Pretty awesome effort given they were in their 40s
Bit of British gold. You can see its influences on grime and dub step. Only slight issues - 1) a couple of weak tracks including the last one. Probably would have been better to end on Dry Your Eyes. 2) Original Pirate Material would have been the better album to include
Some stone cold classic soul songs delivered by Otis Redding’s amazing voice.
Interesting post-punk album. Slightly grungy and folksy in places. Kristin Hersh's vocal delivery reminds me a bit of Courtney Love
So this is what it would sound like if the Beatles spent the early 60s playing Dylan covers……the jangly guitars get kind of irritating after awhile.
Couldn’t really listen to it. Listened to few other Joni Mitchell tracks
Brings to mind lots of granny’s throwing baggy knickers on stage….or maybe an RSL band
Dreamy whispy vocals overlaying tasty electronic beats - great find!!
Absolute classic album. Truly deserves to be on this list
Absolute classic album. Truly deserves to be on this list
Three words - Jimi. Fuckin. Hendrix.
Smooth rap goodness. Will be adding this to my playlist
Beautiful ethereal soundscape of an album
Quite like the Doors but not their best album
Would have thought post rock indie music would have mixed with mariachi music like steak and ice cream…..Somehow it works though
Oh my God, that’s the funky shit!!
Really beautiful sparse album filled with deeply personal lyrics. After reading about Nick Drake’s tragic history some of the songs are almost hard to listen to.
Side A - low point, far too much organ. Side B - high point 17 minutes of sludgy stoner pre-metal.
Wilco (great band) + Billy Bragg (bit of a knob) + Woodie Guthrie lyrics (actually pretty good) = 4 stars (surprisingly solid would happily listen to again)
CCR solid gold
Ahh the eternal question - how much Congo is too much Congo. Turns out the answer is pretty much anything more than one song’s worth.
Hard rockin 60s goodness
Such a beautiful melancholy album. The arrangements are simple and timeless comprising in the most part of Nick Drake’s voice and an acoustic guitar.
Catchy bouncy sixties pop from the people that did it the best…..kind of wanted to dislike this more than I actually did
Generic and just a bit boring
A funky soulful masterpiece full of joyful positive songs that run the full gamut of lyrical content from songs about music to social justice to childbirth.
First live gig I ever went to was the Metallica tour for this album. Still as fresh, angry and raw sounding as ever
High points are Tracey Thorn’s vocal and the breezy electro-pop sounds although I feel there are similar albums that are a bit more interesting and varied. Ultimately quite liked it though
Rockin post punk indie album
Such a sad story but such a cool as shit blues album. Janis Joplin’s voice is literally incredible. I would give this album six stars if I could.
Bit like a shitter version of the Jesus and Mary Chain. The songs seemed to go on forever.
Moody, atmospheric and slightly gothic. It had me reaching for the black eyeliner
Smooth old skool hip hop and samurai film samples - what more could you want
Guarantee a few of us born before 1982 are not putting this on their 1001 albums to listen to. Overall few ok songs but ultimately kind of boring
Always loved this album. Stone cold hard rock classic!!
Not a fan of cheesy synth sounds - not then and not now. Also slightly strange how it just randomly turns into an album full of covers
I liked this album a lot more than I expected to. Tiny dancer is a stand out but there are a bunch of other interesting tracks like Levon and Madman Across the Water. Great to hear Elton experimenting with prog rock.
Crooning country and western cabaret. I feel this is the music that would be playing at the end of the night in a country and western bar full of middle aged short haired women.
Just found this a bit boring. On some of the more down tempo songs I felt like I might have slipped into a coma
Wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about this one but in retrospect it’s a pretty cool album. Songs seem to form more of a soundscape rather than conforming to traditional song structures
This one presented me with a bit of a quandary. One one hand Bob Dylan is an amazing lyricist and writes a solid tune - acoustic and electric. On the other hand I find his nasally voice kind of irritating.
Classic bayou boogie from CCR
So really liked most of the songs and Tina Turner’s ballsy soulful vocals….but not going to lie I didn’t love the dated 80s production. The best songs were definitely the ones with minimal additions to Tina Turner’s vocals
I feel that if Jazz is divided broadly into two categories - then this album represents the easy listening jazz as opposed to the dark clubs, dope smoking, jazz. Still quite pleasant to listen to
Strange beautiful album filled with Kate Bush’s ethereal voice. Got definite Stranger Things vibes from the start
Raw, angsty and angry - loved it!!
Solid follow on from Nevermind. In places a little too abrasive for my tastes but overall still really liked it
Really beautiful sad album
Ice T is the flyist, dopest, muthafucka and I am totally on his dick
This really felt like it went on forever. Not a big folk music fan and after awhile Joan Baez’s earnest high pitched voice got pretty grating and gave me a headache.
RIP Chris Cornell - you magnificent bastard!!
Great album. Used to listen to Dinosaur Jr way back when but never had this album - feel like going back in time to tell myself to fuck whatever else I was listening at that point and to go and buy this album
Gem of an album by a pretty underrated band. Rawer more punk version of britpop. It sounds like the Vines playing Blur covers.
Beautiful mesmerising album. Beth Gibbons smooth sexy and slightly spooky voice is a highlight.
Great to see an Aussie band on the list. The Saints are a solid hard rocking punk band with their own sound and a bit more depth to their music than the average punk band
I probably would have enjoyed this more if Willie Nelson’s singing and musical arrangements didn’t for some reason didn’t remind me of Kermit the Frog and the Muppet Show
This was such a massive record and interestingly seems to stand the test of time. Some of the balladry, orchestral and string arrangements as well as the helicopter sounds are a bit borderline pompous but Oasis manages to carry it off
Quite like the Sun Sessions Elvis. However I feel that by 1969 Elvis was becoming a bit of a parody - one step away from eating deep fried peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and shooting at TV sets with a pearl handled revolver
Pretty big Britpop fan but just didn’t gel with this album
Loving the ambient grooves
It’s hard objectively rating Sargeant Peppers as it is such a classic well known album. I feel my dad must have played this album a thousand times on countless long country drives. There’s definitely a bunch of classic tracks that I love like and connect with like Day in the Life but not sure I totally love it as a whole
Solid effort from John Lee Hooker and friends. Lot’s of trademark John Lee Hooker mumbling and crunchy blues rifts. Standout track for me is the Healer with Carlos Santana
Really fun album - Texas fried boogie blues. Eliminator contains a bunch of classic ZZ Top songs. With the long beards and fuzzy guitars it is really easy to overlook how solid a band they were and how good a guitarist Billy Gibbons is.
Some really great funk tracks like Inspiration Information but also some fairly esoteric filler like Pling!. Overall sounds a bit like what would happen if Stevie Wonder took a fuck tonne of drugs.
Moby, you bald, tattooed, tofu eating musical genius!!
Sorry Fats, it wasn’t you it’s me…..not a fan of New Orleans’ jazz, rockabilly and the 50s more generally so I don’t think I was ever going to like this one
Kind of fun album. I was surprised to see it pop up though. It was a bit like seeing that Kid Rock somehow made the list.
Didn’t really know any Joni Mitchell songs other than “Big Yellow Taxi” and couldn’t say I was a fan…..after listening to this album can’t say that has changed
I have a real soft spot for this bit of jangly, 90s alt-pop.
……..sometimes taking fuck loads of drugs and picking up a musical instrument just isn’t a good idea
Pleasant and well produced but honestly a bit bland. Feels like late night supermarket muzak….kinda nice muzak just not that interesting
Can totally see where bands live me OutKast, Chilies, Arrested Development and Fishbone got there sound from
Dark sludgey 90s goodness
Such a legend
Absolutely legendary album. Crazy to think this came out in 1973. Iggy’s growling vocals and James Williamson’s hard rock riffs come together like a punch in the face!!
Straight up love PJ Harvey
Great comeback album - strange, industrial and yet true to Portishead
Love this album. It shows just how talented and musically varied the Clash were
I guess a lot of what you like and think about an album can be contextual. This is definitely the perfect album for coffee on a rainy day in a Melbourne cafe.
Strangely likeable. My favourite song of his is still The Long Road with Pearl Jam.
Such a strange little man and such a shit film but what a fucking (which is an adjective I assume the Purple One would approve me using) fantastic album
Surprisingly likeable. It probably won’t make my playlist going forward but quite enjoyed listening to Tom Petty warbling away.
Ahh Nick, you silver tongued crooner
Bit medieval panto for my liking
Very same-y and irritating for the most part. This ain’t living was ok
Smashing debut album - I think these four likely lads might do okay for themselves
Really great album. Love the bluesy vibes and Steve Winwood’s soulful voice. Only thing that stops it from being perfect is the fucking organs…..what is it about late 60s / early 70s and fucking organs
I am a bit divided on Radiohead. I liked the Bends but thought Kid A was a bit pretentious. Hail to the Thief was actually pretty good, just enough rock thrown into the mix to make it a pretty solid album
What a legend! I can completely understand how Hendrix scared the shit out of Clapton and Townsend
Don’t know my new tango from my old tango but quite liked this one
Growing up I had a friend who used to listen to Walking with a Panther a lot - I remember thinking that LL Cool J just sounded like a colossal knob…….can’t say my opinion has changed
Like being stuck in an elevator for three quarters of an hour. Much like being stuck in an elevator I desperately wanted out after the first 5 minutes
très bons messieurs Bangalter and de Homem-Christo
Gibby Haynes, you strange strange man
A massive, defiant, sex, drugs and alcohol fueled masterpiece. There is not a weak song on the album. When I turned it on I remembered when I first heard it as a teenager. I was hooked from the opening rifts of Welcome to the Jungle.
Not a massive shoe gazer so this was only okay for me. Second and louder half of the album was definitely better
NWA is in tha house!!
Ultimately slightly boring elevator music
Good pop album and mostly an enjoyable listen. It stands the test of time pretty well but feels a little sterile and over produced in places. Stand out tracks for me were Mr Blue Sky and Sweet Talkin’ Woman
Liked this albums slightly rawer and more bluesy feeling. Nice change from the more jangly 60s pop of the Beatles
I used to think Elvis Costello was a pretentious twat, now I know he is a bit boring too
Love Beck, he is one of those artists that could only have existed in the 90s
Not sure I needed almost two hours of George Harrison
Liked this more than I expected to
Like a pleasant stroll through an upmarket department store
Yeah not going to lie this was pretty bad. Gets plus one star for the unintentionally funny lyrics
As a child of the nineties I feel I was pretty much predestined to like this one
The 80s and I have a bit of an on again, off again relationship. This album and new wave in general exemplifies the things I have a few issues with, in particular 80s nu-wave vocals, jangly guitars, 80s keyboards and synths as well as random saxophones/brass. None the less I actually liked Talk Talk and would listen to this again
Is it another Stevie Wonder album - yep……is it good - yep…..is it his best - probably not
I spent most of the time trying to decide if this was two or three stars…..then I realised it was 58mins long - decision made!!
Kick ass vocals and rythmn section. Is heavy, is good!!
Ah Steely Dan, the porridge of the rock world….bit bland but kind of fills you up
I give you 2 stars for the 20 minute drawn out sort of blues jam at the end of the album….that was really kind of painful
It was jazz, it was Billie Holiday, I liked it
Really cool album. Can hear major shades of Brit Pop in this.
Pretty much straight up classic
Sounds like an album a teenager boy might put on when he thinks there is a chance he might get some.
Funky album with great pop songs….minus one star because he’s a nonce
Classy bit of blue eyed soul from the thin white duke. Includes classic Bowie tracks like Fame and Young Americans as well as songs like Across the Universe which showcase his unique vocal style
This would probably would have been way better with a couple of ginormous spliffs
Great debut album from the Kings of Leon. It is a much rawer bit of southern garage rock and much less polished than their later efforts
Good bit of well produced pop. Has some stand out tracks like Earn Enough for Us and Dear God, which I feel still stand up today. Having said that there are a couple of tracks that borderline grate a bit
This album must have seemed so completely out there in 1978. In retrospect it’s difficult to overstate how influential it is to future generations of electronic music. It’s incredible how little it has aged in almost 50 years.
Fun fact - I had a friend who was in the video clip for one of the big singles from this album……album still sux though
Interesting concept, although not sure I would listen to this more than once and ultimately it kind of fades into the background a bit.
I feel like a lot of people can thank Ray Charles for getting a lot of sex over the last 60 odd years
Cruisy summer reggae vibes on a cold winter morning…..oh legalise it, don’t criticise it
Ok so normally people say this was not what I expected and I loved it…..so here we go - this was not what I expected and it kinda sucked. It all feels a bit half assed. I like the Beach Boys which is what saved this from getting 1 star. Barnyard was a particular low point but by no means the only one - that’s right I am looking at you Vega-Tables! I feel I am starting go on a bit but this reminds me of the solo efforts of Syd Barrett and John Frusciante. They were all better in their respective bands where they had others to rein in the worse of their creative excesses.
Film was better than the album
So didn’t really have to think too hard when rating this one. Come Together, Something and I Want You are just fucking brilliant songs
Ahh 90s electronic music - love the random beeps and bloops of analog synthesisers!!
Started strong then just kind got a bit annoying towards the end
Loved the miles of sludgy guitar sounds courtesy of Tony Iommi and Ozzy’s spaced out vocals!! Sabbath really are the kings of stoner rock
Tim Buckley reminds me of one of those guys sitting in a pub telling anyone who will listen how many women he has had sex with, while everyone around him rolls their eyes
Surprisingly good
Ok so this was a pretty fucking good album but I guess that is a surprise to pretty much no one
Big smile on my face when I saw today’s album. Always loved this one and somehow perfect for a cold Saturday afternoon
Spent most of my time while listening to this album figuring out whether I hated it or really hated it…..turns out I just hated it
Didn’t listen to them way back when and kind of feel like I might have missed out
Didn’t mind this but the Boss is not really my jam. Badlands is a great song though
This album was alright. Interesting concept especially for the time but a bit too long. Not sure it deserves all the hate it gets but I guess music is subjective
I am a big Indy, punk, post-punk and alternative fan but I found this a bit hit and miss
Not sure what else to say but this was a pretty cool album with some tasty guitar licks
Smooth as a pair of silk underpants
Really beautiful
Yeah. No
Absolutely legendary album. The Ramones are pretty much the godfathers of punk, power pop and a large amount of alternative music.
Ohh yeah…..Everythin’ gon’ be alright this morning
Hard to separate what is a really great album from what is a really shitful human being
Giving me Stevie Wonder vibes
I feel that I should have liked this more than I did but to be honest I found it really cheesy and I don’t generally like soundtracks. First two songs were the highlight for me
Early 2000s UK alternative - this pretty much hits my sweet spot
Amazing vocal melodies. This album instantly transports you to another time and place. It’s like the best parts of Paul Simon’s Graceland album times ten
This was hard to rate. Don’t like Billy Corgan and the album was really, really long…..but some really killer tracks on it
So I get all the South Park Fiona Apple jokes now
Some of the subject matter and skits haven’t dated well but Biggie’s rhymes still sound pretty fresh
My second and hopefully last Pere Ubu album
Such a good album - still as fresh and energetic as when it came out
Not Damon Albarn’s best but still pretty good
Literally one of my favourite albums ever. So inventive and Dexa is a genius on the decks
Was okay but don’t feel the need to listen to another devo album any time soon
Music to fuck your sister to
Ah old slow hand - using your guitar prowess and some old school classic rock to steal your best friend’s woman
Ok, definitely better and less wanky than I thought it would be
Turns out Sledgehammer is not the only Peter Gabriel song I knew….actually pretty good album, interesting mix of styles and different sounds
Always viewed Thin Lizzy as a bit limp but I quite liked, might even listen to it again if it wasn’t so fucking long…,. maybe I am getting old
Don’t really like Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young so I guess by extension this was never going to make it past okay
Such a great album. This list was literally created for albums like this
Loved Tom Waits ever since I first saw him a sitting in a gutter in a Jim Jarmusch film. This album is vintage Tom Waits - it reeks of cheap sex, whisky and cigarettes
On one hand it’s important to include challenging albums on the list. On the other hand this album is shit and Marilyn Manson is a bit of a tool
Great album and beautiful voice…not sure about the cat
Ah Bob, you nasally voiced troubadour, you write a good song but your music can get kind of irritating
Some good solid sixties soul, ultimately let down a bit by some filler tracks and too much organ/flute
Ultimately felt like corny, swinging sixties, cocktail music…..also maybe it’s just me but the photo on the album makes Caetano Velcro looks like a serial killer
Unfortunately as I don’t speak Portuguese I can’t really comment on the lyrical content. However pretty cool guitar and world sounds without sounding cheesy - quite liked it
Quintessential Neil Young album. Bonus points for being released in the year I was born. Contains some absolute classics like Needle and the Damage Done, Heart of Gold and Old Man as well as Alabama the track that riled up Lynyrd Skynyrd
Absolute classic metal album which still sounds fresh as ever. Some masterful arrangements and every song is cris and tight
One of my favourite ever albums. Every track is a classic. It’s hard to underestimate the role this album and Green Day had in bringing punk back into the mainstream
I knew this was going to be bad. Halfway through the first song I was already checking how long the album went for. By the second song I was wondering what I had done to deserve this. By halfway through I was starting to remember the only Adele fan I knew and I realised that it explained a lot….I.knew my own run of great albums, Harvest, Number of the Beast and Dookie, had to end but did it have to end this way???
When this came up I was pretty apprehensive - 74 minutes long punk record with 45 tracks. But pleased to say I was totally wrong. This album was tight, the majority of the tracks were solid and the mix of punk, jazz, a tiny bit of country and spoken word kept it interesting.
This was pretty good. More interesting than I thought it would be. After hearing Brass in Pockets so many times when I was young I pretty much wrote the Pretenders off
Really solid last album from Bowie. Probably needs a couple of listens. I remember hearing about this album when it was released and gave it a listen but didn’t really connect with it. Totally different impression second time around though.
Cruisy, Lo-fi masterpiece. Includes classics like Satellite of Love and Perfect Day
Bit like an extended 50s western matinee
Such a good album! Literally no filler tracks
Quite liked this album. It’s a bit rock n roll pantomime but then that’s KISS
Kind of boring
Really liked this album, very different from Odelay. It is much more laid back and almost folksy, much more instrument and less sample driven. At the same time it is very much a Beck album
Such a good album (although there is a bit or a pedo vibe)
Generally don’t stand on principles but although this is pretty good, a lot of the songs are covers and bands like MC5 just did this better
Can take Morrissey in small doses - whole album of jangly guitars and mournful vocals was a bit much
Always found Bjork a bit hit and miss in the past and thought her albums were a little all over the shop but really liked this one. Might be time to delve into her back catalog a bit more
