Joan Baez
3/5
I think I heard her for the first time in high school and thought she had such a beautiful voice. This is the first album I've listened to of hers, and that still holds up, but it can get to be a bit much for song after song, particularly some of the shriller notes. I also don't understand why there were so many songs about historical figures.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
3/5
The music and vocals were not bad, but it was pretty long and strange. I think it's something you have to be in the right mood for. Better than I expected, though!
A Tribe Called Quest
4/5
Very solid album. I am tempted to give it a 5, but I think at times their rhymes and beats are so pleasantly rolled out that they can run together. Still, some excellent songs and talent.

4/5
Lots of very, very good songs. At times it just feels like they run together or sound too similar, but I forgot how much I liked their music.

Blur
4/5
I had only heard Song 2, as far as I know, so I wasn't expecting much (thinking one-hit wonder). However, it was an interesting mix of music!

Pixies
4/5
I liked this album more than I had expected to. I guess I didn't know much about the Pixies. I saved a couple songs to my Spotify favorites.
Daft Punk
3/5
I didn't think I would like Daft Punk. I don't think I would just sit around listening to the album because I tend to like music with lyrics and more of a melody, but I thought it had good beats and would make good background music for coding, cleaning, cooking, or something along those lines.
Stevie Wonder
4/5
Stevie Wonder has a beautiful voice. Most of what I had heard from him had been fairly peppy songs, so this album with its melancholy feel was quite different (but still enjoyable).
Air
4/5
I had not heard of this band before but found their music to be pretty soothing with good melodies.
Nina Simone
3/5
I think this is the first of her music that I've listened to. It sounded very soulful and had some beautiful and powerful parts and lyrics.
Run-D.M.C.
5/5
I had heard some of these songs before, but not all of them. They've got some really great beats and clever lyrics, and I enjoyed the whole album.
Big Star
3/5
I had never heard of this band, but apparently this album has a cult following. It reminded me of a couple other bands like the later Beatles and maybe some Oasis, but there were so many different things going on throughout the album that it's hard to categorize. I appreciated the piano and other instruments, though sometimes it was a bit chaotic. The lead singer has a nice voice. Kind of a strange album.
Prince
4/5
This album has some iconic songs. I can appreciate Prince's artistry, even if I thought that the song Purple Rain went on too long.
ABBA
4/5
Lots of catchy songs on this album, some of which I had previously heard. Some of them tended to sound very similar. Overall, a very enjoyable album to listen to.
Emmylou Harris
4/5
I really enjoyed this album despite it being more country-sounding than I typically go for. There were some very catchy songs, and Harris has a beautiful voice.
Nick Drake
3/5
Not a bad album, but very melancholy and sounds similar to some other artists from that time. The instrumentals are nice.
Screaming Trees
5/5
I really liked this album and thought all of the songs were pretty good.
Neil Young
3/5
Just still not a fan of Neil Young.
The Dave Brubeck Quartet
5/5
Very good. Take Five was a very familiar song. I would enjoy listening to this in the background.
The Shamen
5/5
Never heard of them but enjoyed the album. Easy to listen to and good for coding.
Violent Femmes
5/5
Quintessential album of my youth that still holds up today.
Sonic Youth
3/5
A bit cacophonic.
Depeche Mode
4/5
Pretty good overall. Seemed a little more inventive than I usually go for.
4/5
Some zany stuff but a lot of good melodies and personality.
The Smiths
4/5
A little overwrought, but has some good songs, vocals, and instrumentals.
5/5
I ended up really liking this album. I guess I had a totally wrong idea of what The Kinks sounded like. I thought they were punk. This reminds me a lot of the Beatles at times but has its own flair.
Mike Oldfield
3/5
This is a very strange "album." I think the musicality and ingenuity are good, but it's not something I'd want to sit around listening to.
The Rolling Stones
4/5
Lots of recognizable hits and some different musical types than I was expecting. Definitely very catchy at times!
Eagles
4/5
I hadn't heard most of these before. Some catchy songs for sure, but also a few that I really didn't care for (the sad song). The final track sounds too much like the first one. A mixed bag.
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
Not super engaging. I am not a huge fan in general, but I like some of his other music much better. I do think his band is talented.
The Undertones
4/5
Kind of a fun album. Sounded a little punky. I don't think I'd heard of them before.
The Monks
2/5
I could see this being some sort of cult favorite, especially among friends and family of the band, but I just couldn't get into it. The songs were too similar and not very good.
Earth, Wind & Fire
5/5
Excellent album. Very groovy music and fun to listen to.
Iron Maiden
5/5
Very solid. I am a metal fan but never really listened to Iron Maiden. I don't think I had heard any of the songs on this album but thought it was very good all around.
Garbage
4/5
Good album. It doesn't quite call to me, but there are some standout songs.
Ryan Adams
4/5
Better than I expected, especially some of the bluesy stuff further into the album.
Stevie Wonder
4/5
I liked this double (?) album better than the other of his that I listened to. It had more upbeat music mixed in. I love his voice and talent!
Cat Stevens
3/5
Not very compelling overall. I am just not a fan of his voice and style. Still, better than I thought it would be, and I enjoy "Wild World".
Solomon Burke
4/5
I had not recalled the artist's name but definitely knew Cry to Me. The whole album was aptly named and fun to listen to.
Buck Owens
5/5
Very fun album! I enjoyed a lot of the songs.
The Divine Comedy
3/5
Strange album. It kind of sounds like the soundtrack to a 90s film with a lot of velvet, candles, and outrageous makeup. Maybe something by Baz Luhrmann. The vocals and music aren't bad, but it's just a little hard to describe or to get into.
Jacques Brel
3/5
I've heard of this artist but don't think I've listened before. Kind of amusing French music, but not particularly compelling.
Steely Dan
3/5
Softer rock than I had expected. Seems to follow some social justice themes. Not bad background music.
Joni Mitchell
3/5
Her upper range is a little annoying, but her voice isn't bad overall. Some of the songs were not so bad, but I don't think I'd listen often.
Basement Jaxx
4/5
I probably wouldn't sit around listening to this because it seems more like a kind of mix of techno, house, dance, pop, but I thought the music was pretty good and would be good background for coding or for a party.
LL Cool J
5/5
Absolute classic from the GOAT. Ladies love cool James for a reason.
The Allman Brothers Band
4/5
Really good for a live album, though some songs went on so long I forgot what song it was. They have a great bluesy rock sound.
The Who
3/5
Doesn't sound as polished as some of their later albums. "A Legal Matter" was one of the better songs, in my opinion. I think the only song I had heard before was "My Generation" which is good but I prefer some of the remakes better.
Bob Dylan
3/5
Some of his songwriting may represent the feel of the times, but I don't personally understand the appeal. Songs seem repetitive, and the singing is not good.
Robbie Williams
4/5
Fun album! It's amazing how many different qualities his voice can take on.
Morrissey
4/5
Better than I expected. I like his voice, even if it seemed a little moody at times.
DJ Shadow
3/5
Not bad but not something I would go out of my way to listen to, except in the background.
Nirvana
4/5
Very good live album with some guests as well. I always seem to be taken by surprise by how many Nirvana songs I really like. They definitely left their mark on my youth, and I still enjoy listening.
Bill Evans Trio
3/5
Pleasant but repetitive jazz. It had a little too much going on to be background music.
Radiohead
2/5
I was not a fan at all of this album. I like Creep but had not really listened to other Radiohead, but if this album is at all representative I think they are not for me. Some of it was way too cacophonous and other parts were really bland.
Fugees
5/5
I've heard some of the songs before but thought the album was likely overhyped at the time. I think I was wrong. Really enjoyed listening to this one. They've got a great sound and style.
Public Image Ltd.
1/5
I really did not think this album was good in terms of music or vocals. Absolutely none of the songs appealed to me. I didn't think I would ever give an album a 1, but there it is.
The Strokes
4/5
Pretty good album with some catchy tunes. It just doesn't stand out so much from similar bands at the time.
Jimi Hendrix
4/5
Good songs (and guitar, obviously), but no real stand outs, in my opinion.
Genesis
2/5
This is a weird album. Can't say I'm a fan. It's just a bit too bizarre.
Beatles
4/5
Good album with some standout songs if a bit uneven overall.
Led Zeppelin
4/5
Excellent album. Definitely some songs I knew, but I thought they were all pretty good.
The Clash
3/5
Not great in terms of singing, but the music is not too bad.
Queen
5/5
This album is so different musically but really shows off their talent and bold, creative spirit. I only knew a couple songs but enjoyed it a lot.
Iggy Pop
3/5
Not too bad musically. Vocals are not the best, but the songs were not too bad.
Django Django
4/5
Not bad as background/sampling music, but not much to listen to, necessarily.
U2
4/5
Very good album with lots of raw feeling.
Sarah Vaughan
4/5
Very pleasant to listen to. Vaughn has a beautiful voice.
Supertramp
4/5
Pretty solid album but nothing that really stood out.
Muddy Waters
4/5
Very good bluesy music.
Missy Elliott
4/5
I really enjoyed this album. Lots of good songs and collaborations. I wish there wasn't as much spoken content, but I appreciate the artist's perspective.
Dolly Parton
4/5
Not really my style of music, but I imagine that it would be a dream come true if it were. Certainly some megatalented singers!
Neil Young
3/5
Not a Neil Young fan, but I thought this one was better than the later album I already listened to. It just gets to sound repetitive and whiny after a while.
Nirvana
5/5
Great album! Iconic songs and a new at the time sound actually backed up by talent.
Sheryl Crow
5/5
I've heard a few songs before and liked them but discovered that there was a lot of other good music on this album as well.
Sebadoh
3/5
Not too bad, but when it did sound different from bands of the time it didn't sound good. There were a couple songs that were okay! Just not my style, probably.
Belle & Sebastian
4/5
I'd heard of this band but never heard anything by them, that I can recall. The music wasn't bad! I probably would not just choose it to listen to, but I enjoyed the album.
The Stooges
3/5
Okay, not bad for this style of music, just not really what I'm into.
4/5
Lots of very, very good songs. At times it just feels like they run together or sound too similar, but I forgot how much I liked their music.
Sonic Youth
3/5
I didn't really find any songs that I particularly liked. It's pretty noisy!
New Order
3/5
Not too bad 80s sound.
Eminem
5/5
Although his content may be objectionable at times, Eminem is just an extremely talented individual. He has clever wordplay and a keen sense of meter and rhythm. I hadn't heard most of this album before but was impressed by the material and use of guest stars. I didn't really expect to like it so much, though I guess I appreciate it more than like it.
The Offspring
4/5
Good, fresh music. So many good songs on this album. The vocals get to bit a bit much over time, but definitely a great album.
Talking Heads
3/5
It was not bad, musically, but I am not a huge fan of nonsense and weirdness, and I can't think of any songs I'd be dying to hear again.
Soft Machine
2/5
I was not a fan of this. I guess I didn't really understand it. I'm sure it was inventive, but it's just not for me.
Tears For Fears
4/5
I forgot how good this album was. Seems like a mix of very catchy and somewhat inventive music.
MGMT
4/5
Pretty good for the type of music, with some familiar songs.
Deep Purple
4/5
Hadn't heard too much from this band before, but this album has some pretty rocking songs.
Franz Ferdinand
4/5
They have their own sound. Some of the songs on the album have too much of the same sound, but the album has some good music overall.
Bee Gees
3/5
Very moody and melancholy compared to what I expected from what I had heard of them before. Some songs are not too bad, but some are really odd.
Sepultura
3/5
I had higher hopes because I like the genre and had heard a lot about Sepultura years ago, but I couldn't really get into the songs. They have a similar sound in some ways to other bands I like, but I didn't get the same sense of feeling.
The Young Gods
3/5
Kind of a strange French metal band. The songs were okay, but it was a little hard to get into. It's not just the language, since Rammstein seems to make it work.
Joy Division
2/5
I wasn't a fan. It was pretty melancholy or dour! I have since learned what the group's name refers to, so I guess that makes sense.
The xx
4/5
Not too bad! Pretty pleasant to listen to, and the vocals were nice. I had never heard of this band.
Beatles
4/5
I almost gave this a 5, but it could have been trimmed a bit. There are some great songs, though.
The Byrds
4/5
Different than expected and very country sounding, but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
LCD Soundsystem
4/5
Not too bad. Singing reminded me of Cake, U2, Cure at times. Sort of pleasant electronica.
The Zombies
4/5
Enjoyed this album. I didn't know most of the songs but was pleasantly surprised.
Aretha Franklin
5/5
An amazing voice that I could never get tired of listening to. Most of the songs were new to me.
Fleetwood Mac
3/5
Not as bad as I had heard, but nothing that really stood out.
White Denim
4/5
Don't think I had heard of them, but I enjoyed it.
Emmylou Harris
4/5
Not really my genre, but a pretty good album!
The Rolling Stones
3/5
Okay. Sympathy for the Devil is the best song on this album. Overall sounds too country or something.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
3/5
The music is pretty good, but I can't get past the vocals at times.
Nick Drake
3/5
Another melancholy album, but I liked it better than his other one and understand the melancholy better now.
Rush
4/5
Good music and vocals, though the first song is long and none of the songs particularly spoke to me.
Saint Etienne
4/5
Pretty good album considering the genre. Never heard of it before.
Paul McCartney and Wings
4/5
Pretty good album.
Beck
4/5
Although it doesn't have some of his most well-known music, I think this album shows a lot of the clever, innovative approach to music that Beck often displays (hit or miss sometimes!).
Jeff Buckley
4/5
I was mostly aware of Hallelujah, but this album has a bigger range of music types than I expected. Buckley certainly had an unusual voice and a lot of talent.
Crosby, Stills & Nash
4/5
I hadn't listened to CSN before (that I can recall) but have certainly heard of them. I was probably most impressed with the vocal harmonies. Some of the guitar parts reminded me of some from the Grateful Dead.
The Cult
4/5
Very good but sounds a lot like their other music. Born to be Wild cover was probably a mis-step, but enjoyable overall.
ZZ Top
3/5
Not bad. Only one song that I recognized. I enjoyed the more bluesy feel but was not bowled over.
Adele
4/5
Adele has a very striking voice, but for me it can be too much at times. I took a break midway through the album and came back to it and appreciated it more. This album has several of her best-known songs.
Hole
4/5
Almost tempted to give it a 5, but it's not quite there for me. Still, a very good album overall. The title song rocks!
Alexander 'Skip' Spence
2/5
I had come to some conclusions after listening to the whole album and then read the reviews and found out that I was pretty much on target with where this album originated from. Although reading the background frames it in a different light, it doesn't change my impression that this is not a good album. There are some interesting things going on musically at times, but then other songs almost sound like covers. I didn't read anything that really told me why this album is included in this list.
Antony and the Johnsons
2/5
I really couldn't get into this album. It sounded like it was trying to be poignant and deep, but the layered vocals and melodramatic lyrics just seemed a bit amateurish. It won an award, so I guess someone must have liked it quite a bit. The songs made no sense.
A Tribe Called Quest
4/5
Very solid album. I am tempted to give it a 5, but I think at times their rhymes and beats are so pleasantly rolled out that they can run together. Still, some excellent songs and talent.
R.E.M.
3/5
The music on this album was unknown to me but is pretty good. No songs really stood out, though, other than the We Walk song.
Travis
4/5
I had never heard of this band but really enjoyed the album more than I expected to. It's pretty mellow but just flows along pleasantly. Why Does It Always Rain on Me? sounds so familiar.
The Byrds
4/5
Solid classic rock. I enjoyed this one more than Sweetheart of the Rodeo.
Yes
3/5
Not my style. Not too bad musically, but the progressive aspect is a bit goofy.
Coldplay
3/5
Nothing really stood out other than the most famous song (Clocks). Not too bad.
Sinead O'Connor
3/5
Not too bad, though unfortunately she ends up sounding pretty whiny after so many songs.
Bob Dylan
3/5
This was better than the other Dylan album I listened to, but I still can't get past the vocals.
Siouxsie And The Banshees
3/5
Hadn't heard it before. Not too bad, but probably better for a younger stage of life.
Björk
2/5
I wasn't sure what she was singing about and couldn't get into this album.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
3/5
Not bad, but not too much stood out here. Sounds like early music.
Burning Spear
3/5
Not too bad, some interesting music.
David Bowie
3/5
Okay, no real stand out songs.
Morrissey
3/5
Fairly good but runs melancholy or whiny, unfortunately.
Beastie Boys
5/5
Excellent, inventive, some what immature but exciting and clever.
Keith Jarrett
3/5
The man is clearly a talented pianist. Like some other reviewers, I found the hooting and moaning really distracting. Although I have gone to jazz improv open mic nights and seen some amazing performers (including on piano), this just wasn't my thing.
Blur
4/5
I had only heard Song 2, as far as I know, so I wasn't expecting much (thinking one-hit wonder). However, it was an interesting mix of music!
Joni Mitchell
3/5
She has a pleasant voice, but I have no idea what she was talking about, and the songs ran together. I think she might appeal to folks from a particular set of decades.
I don't personally think that this is one of their better albums. I lean more toward the earlier, more raw music. This one just feels a bit too safe and poppy.
Beck
4/5
This is almost a five. This album has got some really great songs that just tend to stick around in memory. Beck is always inventive. Sometimes it's a huge miss for me, and sometimes that hits just right, as it does here.
Jerry Lee Lewis
5/5
(rating the album, not the person) This is a spectacular, energetic performance. It's electrifying, exciting, and truly rocking.
SAULT
3/5
This was an interesting album. It's a little hard to describe or categorize. Definitely feels like a powerful message, and the vocals and music were good, but I am not sure they are necessarily songs at times. Still, a worthwhile listen.
Isaac Hayes
3/5
This album was not quite as groovy or soulful as I had expected. The theme song is well known, but most of the album seems to be backdrop scene music so is not quite as engaging.
The Adverts
4/5
Pleasantly surprised by this one. I had never heard of the band and am not always a fan of the genre, but the music was pretty good!
GZA
4/5
I haven't listened to very much from WTC. I really liked this album, between the lyrics and the beats.
4/5
Solid album. Unfortunately the band (well, at least Bono) has become a bit much over the years, but I still appreciate this earlier music.
Bonnie Raitt
4/5
Very good album. Hadn't heard much from her before, but she has a nice voice and a bluesy rock feel. I had expected more of a country sound but was pleasantly surprised.
The Mothers Of Invention
4/5
Having never heard of this band or album and having no preconceived notions, I initially thought this was a sincere attempt at straightforward music. That illusion was probably shattered in less than a minute. I have to say that, as much as I always thought Zappa was too out there (and I had no idea at first that he was part of this), I really liked this album. I don't know if I'd listen to it often at all, but it made me laugh out loud a few times. It kind of reminded me of a long, catty Oompa Loompa screed. Definitely bizarre, but a better side of bizarre than for some of the albums I have experienced here.
Joan Baez
The Pogues
4/5
Never listened to them before. Although the music can get repetitive, it's easy to get into , and the album passed by quickly. I would listen to more of their music.
King Crimson
3/5
Not too bad, but it sounds a bit too much like mythological rock for me. If you are into the concept, I'm sure it's more fun to listen to.
The Black Crowes
4/5
Fun album with some solid jams. I listened to this quite a bit when it came out, and it's held up well in my opinion.
Shuggie Otis
4/5
Never heard of it, but enjoyed it pretty well. Kind of groovy music, and the singer has a really nice voice.
David Bowie
3/5
Nothing too memorable, but some good music.
T. Rex
4/5
Kind of a fun album. I didn't realize he did Bang a Gong.
Kacey Musgraves
4/5
Good, sounds more poppy than the country that I expected.
Miles Davis
4/5
Not too jarring, some nice music throughout. I don't think I'd pick it up to listen to but did enjoy it more than expected.
Neu!
4/5
Not too bad! I had not heard of them and from the name expected something more industrial, but it had a lot of piano and mellow music.
Joan Armatrading
4/5
Nice voice and good music. Had never heard of her!
Van Halen
4/5
Very good songs. Some iconic hits, and others that are great but don't reach that level for me.
The Who
4/5
Good music and iconic songs. I am not a huge fan but liked it better than other albums of theirs.
Took me a while to realize the singer was Rod Stewart. It felt like some of the songs were familiar. I would rate this album about the same as his other music that I've listened to.
Bonnie "Prince" Billy
3/5
Strange album. Thought it would be dark, but the music is reasonably cheerful. Some of the lyrics seem dark. Not sure what to make of this one.
Duran Duran
4/5
Very good album with some excellent songs.
The Isley Brothers
4/5
Good album! I didn't realize a couple of these were their songs. I guess I didn't know much about this band but had heard the name.
Metallica
5/5
Amazing album. Although I rank Master of Puppets a little higher, I am always wowed every time I listen, even to the songs I like "least" on the album.
The Modern Lovers
3/5
The music was not bad, but I wasn't a fan of the singing. Too moody or something.
50 Cent
4/5
Very solid and enjoyable with some good guest stars.
Alanis Morissette
4/5
I initially really liked this album when it came out, but then it became overhyped. I still think that's true to some extent, but I enjoyed re-listening and found some new songs to like as well.
The Cure
3/5
There are some great songs from my teenage years, but I never really understood the draw of The Cure. I never got into the moody subculture that fans seemed to be a part of. I do still like some of their songs, but it doesn't really resonate with me.
Tracy Chapman
4/5
Good album. Hadn't heard most of the songs before. Tracy has a beautiful, soulful voice.
Dion
4/5
I was a little disappointed to get this album at first because of the length and the fact that the songs that I really liked from him weren't on the album, but I ended up enjoying it a lot. There were a few songs that sounded familiar, as well. His voice and the music were very pleasant to listen to.
Stephen Stills
4/5
Pretty good. Some of the songs sounded really familiar.
Blur
4/5
This is the second Blur album I've gotten to listen to. The other had Song 2, which was the only song I could think of from them. I learned on that album that the band has a much more diverse style than I had expected, and that continued to be true on this album. In addition, there was a song that I did not know was theirs. Pretty good all around.
The Band
4/5
Pretty good album all around. Nothing particularly stuck out, though.
Nitin Sawhney
3/5
This was an interesting album. I am not sure I could say I liked it, but there were a lot of different types of music that would be hard to categorize. The vocals and music were good, but I'm not sure about how it all came together.
The Beta Band
4/5
Never heard of them before, but I kind of enjoyed the album and thought the songs were pretty good. They reminded me a little of Beck at times.
