Shocked that I really like the back half of this album more than the first three songs that are all really famous singles
So fun and silly, wish I had this as a kid (even better, we got it when we’re 40)
Tears Dry On Their Own bangs
Richard Thompson is a great arranger
“Dirty Work” and “Reelin’ in the Years” are both great, classic pop songs. Hope there is more Dan in this book as this is probably the least interesting album!
“No More No More” is right
This is another 3.5 to me. Glad I re-listened, some great songs on here!
Never heard this before, it was fun!
Not for me but I can appreciate some good thrash metal drumming
This was dope. Name a spookier song than “Good Morning, Captain”!!!
“Duncan”, “Peace Like a River” and “Congratulations” are so beautiful that this gets four stars from me even though I actively dislike a lot of the lyrical content
Perfect album, with perfect sequencing. Bonus assignment: listen to the Neil Young tracks from CSNY’s 4 Way Street
Like for the general soundscape they cultivated here, don’t love bc the songwriting is a bit too same-y for me
Gotta appreciate these guys
This calmed me down while commuting through Union square so it really is transportative. Yes I paused it on the train to watch several Lonely Island videos but that’s really none of your business.
Did I need to hear this again? Probably not. It’s fine though.
Unsurprisingly I liked the super long ambient track at the end better than anything else, kind of loved that. Everything else meh.
I think this is what’s meant by “caterwauling”
Nice music, for the nice people
When the vibes player really went off that was pretty cool
I respect the energy with which Janis Joplin threw herself into singing but this music is not really for me
I love this band for their sincere mishmash of hardcore and southwestern Americana, aggressive rhythm playing and surprisingly elegant harmonics…if you listen to Up on the Sun you also realize they are huge nerds, a fact that makes me love them even more. Maybe an acquired taste but endeared to me. “New Gods” slays.
Important context for The Muppets
Who am I to rate Miles Davis 4/5. Oh well, it’s a 4/5.
Really didn’t like the bluesy stuff much at all, but I like Questions 67 and 68 a lot
The Lennon/McCartney songs are like pre-TikTok dopamine factories
We have to trick the moms into letting the kids bop with us
There are 4 or 5 songs on this that I think are great and then there’s a lot of cacophany. In general I like what this is throwing down though
Would give this a 6/5 if possible
Never heard this before and pleased that I liked it so much, it’s cool that Dave Grohl did this all himself. The exuberance behind it is very Dewey Finn but I’m not mad at it.
The title is truly exactly what it is and it’s awesome
Was going to give this credit because I like “Scar Tissue” and “Otherside” but the new lows that it reaches on the back half are literally like a -2.
Extremely solid house album
Impressively technical but also incredibly lush and alive. Amazing.
Perhaps suffered from my having heard it so many times so it was missing the excitement factor
Solid album, “Heart of Glass” is a 5
An obvious 5 star classic. Probably the best thing I ever bought at Borders Books
This just washed over me and left almost nothing behind
First time hearing this aside from “Sulky Girl.” Not my favorite album of his, but what a creative songwriter, there’s a lot to enjoy here as there always is with Elvis Costello
Go off, Max Roach. Loved “Pannonia,” also “I Surrender Dear” with just Monk on piano…lovely
Excellent front to back. “Thinking of You” is pure bliss.
Great energy but they lost me on the last two tracks
Love Sunshine of your Love, otherwise no thank you
I like “Tom Sawyer,” this was not equally interesting to me throughout
Would like to be the guy yelling in the background, I think I’d be good at that
Having all these tracks on the same album is objectively wild
And that’s the story, of the key change baby
Any songwriter should aspire to the high highs of “Sweet Life”
I respect it but I don’t like it
Misty Mountain and Four Sticks is an awesome b2b
“River of Orchids” is incredible
This is really a 2.5 but I have to be true to myself as a Metallica hater and round down
Y’all need to stop right now
Not my bag style wise but pretty good
For some reason I couldn’t stop thinking about these two guys who were at the open mic night at my favorite college bar literally every week and seemed really old to me at the time
I like “Come On, Come On”
Is she weird? Is she white? Is she promised to the night?
Dismayed that I know almost every song here. I guess my people do come from Boston
I feel like this is just before they really started being a band that I love, but the seeds are there
Not surprised this holds up but surprised it’s so good throughout. Great songwriting!
B.B. King really sings the shit out of this material
Incredible. I particularly liked II b but this is beautiful throughout and it’s simply wild that a human can do this.
Definitely my favorite Dylan
The exact opposite of “leave them wanting more”
Pretty good but pales in comparison to the best Smiths stuff
Obviously a millennial touchstone, great production and Missy’s flow still sounds fresh, inventive, and very funny. She really earned our love!!!!
Sinatra sings this material well but I’d rather just hear these songs in Portuguese
Never heard this before, really liked it
Generally pleasant, but still proud of myself for listening to the whole boxed set
I have a real soft spot for this album & find it affecting in a very specific way. 5/5
I can’t liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiive
John Bonham’s playing Moby Dick for real
I get why this resonated with pre-teens
*Jim Morrison voice* It’s time to give this one a 2
Dave was right, it’s giving Bathroom Break
I respect this album but it’s too peppy to love
Kind of interesting but definitely not for me
Mostly boring, Neil Young was right to leave
Let’s be real, he’s got the goods
Not many live albums generate so much electricity from their exact location and interaction with the audience, but this one definitely does
Honestly still pretty good, but the content is pretty hard to get past
Good music interspersed with some terrible David Crosby originals
An easy 5 star, by far the most intimate thing Beck has ever done
Sounds cool, didn’t like the overtly blues second track, but otherwise thought this was texturally good
Was going to give this 2 stars because the can play their instruments but they wore me down
Turn, turn to the rain and the wind
Listening to this really underlines what a pale mutation stuff like Kings of Leon is
Never heard this before, I enjoyed it!
They should’ve called it Long-la
This was better than Urban Hymns, which is ironic because Urban Hymns was in rotation in my house during the cd era
A talented woman whose falsetto I do not enjoy
Didn’t necessarily think I would but I still really like Tommy!
Prob the coolest U2 album to me
Never listened to Goldfrapp, this was more Portishead-ish than I expected. Turns out I knew the song “Utopia.” More like a 3.5 for me but rounding up bc that one is great
