Album Summary
Kick Out the Jams is the debut album by American proto-punk band MC5. It was released in February 1969, through Elektra Records. It was recorded live at Detroit's Grande Ballroom over two nights, Devil's Night and Halloween, 1968. The LP peaked at No. 30 on the Billboard 200 chart, with the title track peaking at No. 82 in the Hot 100. Although the album received an unfavorable review in Rolling Stone magazine upon its release, it has gone on to be considered an important forerunner to punk rock music, and was ranked number 294 in both 2003 and 2012 editions of Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" lists, and at number 349 in a 2020 revised list.

Not great in my view - a bit dated and naff
Somehow a live album was made before any studio albums
Meh. Nothing special.
4.5 Not sure it deserves this high a score, but I love when musicians get weird with it
Not bad. Good vibe!
#485 There was a definite raw energy to this and I know Kick Out The Jams because of the RATM cover version, so I was intrigued by that. I will confess I didn’t get the best listen to this, interrupted and disrupted so I’ll have to return if only to get a better listen. Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ✅ Listen before you die? ✅ Fave track(s): Kick Out The Jams Rating: 6/10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
This album is the equivalent of a man who taped his eyelids open and took coffee every hour. But it's also the equivalent of a woman CEO.
I liked it. I think I was in the mood for it but this was good solid punk that I could see myself listening to again in the right mood
Decent. Guitar tone was great. Super crunchy and immersive. I didn’t really understand what singer was saying and won’t listen again, but better than average
No thanks. Whatever this is you can leave me out of it. I can appreciate that this is like the beginning of a big punk movement or whatever but I don’t wanna listen to a live album of bad music.
Just fine and forgettable
Why do this at a concert?
Liked the first few
Not for me
Unusual for a debut to be a live album. But given the energy of this performance, I can see how putting these guys in a studio may have been difficult. Mostly sounded like trying too hard. But being in Detroit, you can almost hear KISS being born in this show.
Raw and powerful; they knew what they were doing.
If I had found this in a $1 clearance bin, I would go on and on about my great find. But being told this is one of the 1001 greatest, I balk.
This is an extraordinary album, and I think it really belongs on this list. In parts, it was quite ok for me, but somehow boring. The relatively low-quality music and recording didn't help, either.
Raw. Unfiltered. Rock N Roll. Feels a little dated now but for 1969 this was monumental. And it still bangs.
Great classic album, with some really good songs!
I know why this album received unfavorable reviews when it came out, but I can’t understand why it became an album I must hear before I die. Ugh
No private session used for Spotify. I certainly know of the MC5, but never really got into them. This short live album is full of energy and noise due to the quality of the recording, so much that I won't listen to it again. Life is too short to listen to lofi audio.
woah specifically live, neat! sounds like it was a grand old time grrrg i love hearing crowds cheer and performers talk to the audience
i do not understand the appeal of live albums. this was made up by the fact that i enjoyed the music.
They do give it some and in the right mood, this might be something to listen to. I'll have to return to it when I hit the right mood but for now...2. Slightly intrigued.
Found this very disappointing
Based on the reviews, I thought this was going to be awful. It wasn't--it was pretty great. This doesn't sound like 1969, even though I can hear influences of bands like Spirit in some of this. Anyway. It's loud. It's messy. It's fantastic.
It's like a bad high school band. They have a lot of swagger, but id doesn't make up for the droll and machismo lyrics and mediocre guitar and drums. It was hard to make it through.
452/1089 yeah, this was fine just not super interesting to me faves: borderline, i want you right now 32/100
Another that falls into influential but not for me
Pretty decent live album. Nothing mind blowing, but not boring either.
Very bluesy. Considered proto punk apparently. Not bad but fairly forgettable. I want you right now was actually pretty cool.
Title track rocks
I dreamt about the album before I heard it. In the dream I saw the cover fully formed in my mind and the words “Live Mother Fucker”. This burned itself into my mind until I was able to find the record and was shocked at my previous vision. Later I realised that the cover was shown in the liner notes of KLF’s The White Room. That had to be the origin of the later disconnected dream. A rare time where the cause was traceable.
It's 3.5
One of proto-punks first major statements and masterpieces. The roots of so many disparate genres and bands are planted here in this fuzzy, raucous, and experimental live document of the MC5 in top form.
2,4 Highlights: Kick Out the Jams, Motor City is Burning
As a Michigan native, I really want to say that I love MC5. But man, idk. This was like a wall of distorted guitars with chaos and energy amped up to a 1000 with the occasional melody. Which, some people might enjoy and I might even enjoy it on a different day. Today was not one of those days though
Вот эти ребятки мне зашли, такой типо бунтарский стиль и к тому же зарождающийся панк, короче круто получилось
Late 1960's rock album. Debut album recorded live. Not sure why this is on the list. There are dozens of more notable albums more deserving. Perhaps this on the list because of its "proto-punk" leanings? There must be something here that I'm missing... Pitchfork: n/a Rolling Stone: Top 500 Albums #349
I like the energy
I generally don’t like live albums but it was easy for me to forget this was live. MC5 is one of those bands that I should like but never get around to listening to, and when I do I don’t feel like I’m ever left with much of an impression. That’s kinda my takeaway here too; I liked it but I already can’t tell you anything about it. I want to like it though!
The kind of dirty you can't wash off, and I'm here for it!
It ALL and I mean ALL started with the MC5. No punk, post punk, metal, hardcore or hard anything. No stooges, dolls, Dead Kennedys or CBGBs. None of it- without the MC5. And yet, Kick out the Jams is the only song I’ll come back to and I wish I never heard Starship. Would others come after and do it better? Of course? Does that matter, hell no.
JL : 4, Kick Out The Jams
I used to really like the song, kick out the…..but th3 album is all too much, though if I’d have been at the concert, it would’ve been brilliant
Heard some tracks before including the obvious. It's fine, hard to judge it as a fresh sound. The shitty hard rock of this list has killed me though. 3 Heard before? Some Owned: No, 108/433 (25%) Will I get: No
The thing with punk is that it always sounds kind of bad and the thing with live albums is that they always sound kind of bad so live punk albums always sound really bad. Like actually being at the show is one thing but to listen to it without the energy of the crowd to carry you through??? Hard pass.
Not too bad! Kick out the jams was one we played as a 'group', and Mike would almost always say MF at the beginning. Get us all in trouble. The rest of the songs on first listen were rough. But I went through again, and ended up liking most of them. It's been a while. But these guys were trailblazers.
Review - never been a big fan. They're not bad, they were trailblazers, but it was all done better later. Score - 5/10 Need to listen? YES
Muistutti gvf
I like MC5 and was excited to listen to this, but it wasn't a great recording.
I get that this was influential or something, but it's not great.
Roggunfugginroll.
Eh, its not bad it's just a bit boring. Sounds like any other live rock show of it's time. Nothing really special about it to me.
Appreciate the influence on punk music but I have never liked MC5.
Why did nobody tell me about this before now??
Shite. I’m just listening to a gig I don’t want to be at.
Messy, beautifully disastrous, peculiar punkishness mixed with no direction, but knows exactly when it'll arrive.
Not really my cup of tea
kind of sounds like shit but i appreciated the raw energy.
I forgot why I was so reluctant to listen to this, it's a good time!
Этот альбом/концерт довольно напористый и агрессивный, но для меня это какая то пустая агрессия. Не смог отметить для себя ни одного трека к которому хотелось бы вернуться, а этот напор - он примечателен только для той эпохи.
I’ve been listening to a lot of this era of rock music recently, and frankly this album sounded pretty generic right up until the last track. That one is a lot more experimental for the time, playing with distortion and feedback.
Wanted to like this - but vocals and music were subpar. 2/5
- Third line of the wiki for MC5 has one of the most subtle burns I have ever read: "MC5 were listed by Parade as one of the best rock bands of all time." - Strong, chaotic sound, but sometimes too chaotic for its own good. ("Borderline" is just constant noise.) "Motor City Is Burning" is the best track and the one with the most to say. - Admittedly shocking to hear a lead singer (an American one at that) yell "motherfucker" in an album in 1969.
I really put this album off, but I enjoyed it a little more than I expected. A lot of energy and chaos, but that last song is pretty awful. Rating: 3/10 Favorite Song: Kick Out the Jams
I like the music and arrangement but cant stand the falsetto and the voice overall. Still raw as punk should be
Had this for a few years but I've never been keen. Hearing it again hasn't changed that!
Nyt on kyl OG shittiä. Aivan original punkkia ja jokseenkin menevää musiikkia vaikka ei mitään lempparia. Ihan ok ja kuunneltavaa mutta ei jatkoon. Lisää Hendrixiä kiitos!
Not as in love with this as some people seem to be but it's still a fucking good time
Honestly better than I expected, there were moments when that rawness moved me.
3.81
Inaugurating the great punk tradition of putting style over substance, except in this case the style isn’t that good either.
6.5/10
Heard before: ❌️ Will listen again?:✔️
Debuting with a live album is a big swing, but I have to say that I think they succeeded. This rips pretty damn hard. Only sometimes do they sound a little sloppy; mostly just fired up. They really lay it all out there here. It’s also refreshing to hear a band from this era calling for revolution without couching it in any “flower power” language.
feral
Not impressive for me
A band so way ahead of its time (very much like the other great band from Detroit at the time, The Stooges). The last track stops it from getting the maximum.
Absolute bollocks
This was quite good fun. A bit of garage rock / proto punk that I enjoyed. Even if MC5 want to kick out the Justified Ancients of Mu Mu. I'm not sure why the live album. It didn't add anything. Perhaps it's a sneaky way of getting a best of compilation on the list?
A very important and influential album for the punk movement. A bunch of very solid songs, I really enjoyed the raw energy of the whole thing. I wasn't expecting an experimental, psych/space rock song to close it out. Very solid album. Mid 4.
I'm usually not too big on these "punk before punk" kind of bands but these guys are fun. They're all having a great time and it really reflects in their playing. I love all the stupid stuff they do in Starship especially with all the a cappella stuff and the crazy soloing. It's like No Wave but way earlier than No Wave. Really the whole album feels like a lot of styles before they actually became a thing. I do wish the full two-night recording was out there somewhere, though.
Actually like this better than the actual punk that followed. It’s raw but there is some sense of musicianship and passion. Topics could be a little broader though… Intro mantra is striking! Purpose people, think about your purpose!
Cool I liked it
Too suddenly noisy and screamy next to quieter parts.
I guess this is the sound of the revolution …. sloppy
Apparently a highly influencial album for proto-punk. The last track is too much for me.
Ok, for pure (pre) punk dgas fuckiness, this one is going to be tough to beat. For those inclined to listen to music for the musicianship or the quality of the recording, this is going to be rough. I for one enjoy it enough for what it is.
Loud crashing and banging, really not for me
some of it is good, some of it is meh
wasn't much more after the second song
One of the best live albums out there. A source of the Detroit sound that fueled years of punk to come. MC5 making music unlike anything else we had heard in '69. God damn.
I think if you look up the definition of "power chords" this album pops up.
Not too bad actually
ok for a live
A staple. Rock, proto-punk, whatever. It's awesome.
Most of the music I love would not exist without the MC5. Fuzzed out psychedelic blues played with a strong 'fuck you' attitude. Proto-punk doesn't even begin to describe how important and powerful this is. Pure musical revolution.
В общем неплохая панк-группа, но Kick out the jams мне больше нравится в исполнении других музыкантов.
