it's good. didn't take listening notes. some serious songs, some sillier songs. weird choice following coat of many colors with traveling man. i would put this more in 'collection of songs as album' category than in 'total unit as album' category. which, the songs were good so really i'm just splitting hairs. EDIT I listened to this on Aug 24, 2026, and Dolly Parton died Aug 25, 2026. To pay my respects, I am changing my rating from a 4/5 to a 5/5. - 8/25/26

it's a fine album. the title track is just not as good as its reputation. the first half of the album is pretty same-y and is okay. the final four songs are where the album shines, with "here i am" and "a better place to live" as particular stand-outs

Beautiful album. Short, sweet and lovely. Dolly had a wonderful voice and the lyrics match her singing talent. Great way to start my Friday morning

Sweet Dolly, probably even better than the album I got on the day of your passing. Coat Of Many Colors is such a sweet story that tells you a lot about the woman, growing up with nothing, but armed with a sense of purpose and savvy that would serve her well, along with that amazing voice. The remainder of the songs are not anything too fancy, but they get the job done with aplomb. Hard to find anything too negative to say about this, it passed the time very nicely.

not my stuff

Very pleasant album, and able to stand above other popular Nashville country of this era by showcasing Dolly's passionate and funny lyrics/writing, and huge, commanding, yet delicate voice. Title track is a classic, and the rest of the album is really diverse, ranging from the nearly Rock & Roll of "Travellin Man", and the beautiful "Here I Am." Unlike Jolene, the highs aren't quite as high, and this album can feel a little slight, but it's still a worthy early morning listen.

I’ve never ever heard a Dolly Parton song in my life. This is new for me. Update: I couldn’t finish it

I laughed, I cried. I love her voice, her storytelling, the picking. Im always biased towards Dolly, but she’s just so good. Early Morning Breeze is a highlight with Coat of Many Colors (I cry everytime), and A Better Place to Live

И тут тоже какой-то странный инструмент, как на прошлой песне есть. Не могу понять, как бцдто гавайская гитара какая-то 6.2/10 She never met a men - о, бэки появились. Тоже интересная, но также не то чтобы выделяется прям 5/10 Early morning breeze - о тут бас ебашит балдежно 6/10 The way I see you - начало многообещающее, но потом опять в средняк уходит 5.4/10 Here I am - тоже начало мощное, а потом ну так. Интересно по бэкам тоже 5.2/10 A better place to live - хороший закрывающий трек 6/10 Ну в целом хороший альбом. Сделан прям под одно настроение, чувствуется что ничего из стиля общего не выбивается. И по-сути от начала до конца эмоционально очень приятный. Не фанат жанра, поэтому особо что-то сказать еще не смогу 6/10

The title song is amazing. Dolly is an American treasure. This was one of her albums that began her break from Porter Wagoner, even though he writes several songs. “Traveling Man” is fun. There is a victimhood that threads thru this. It’s interesting for someone who stood for women’s rights and for the LGBTQ community. The bass line in “Early Morning Breeze” pulls that songs whimsy along with its strong walk.

Beautiful record, with the title and intro track being such a nice story of her upbringing. Yet another record that shows that I actually do enjoy some country music. Her songwriting, melody, emotion are all so easily heard and understood. RIP Dolly - legend.

I can’t say I’m a big Dolly Parton fan, and a lot of her music is hit or miss for me. But this album is one I’ve enjoyed more than others I’ve heard from her. The strings and fiddles bring out a strong folk-inspired sound, while her acoustic guitar strumming is front and center along with her signature vocal style and heartfelt lyrics.

I quite enhiyed this. I like a bit of country and she has a nice voice. Travellin Man was my favourite but i really enjoyed a Better Place To Live as well.

One of Dolly Parton's most popular albums. It was really good! A quintessential country album! It has that 70's and 80's Country sound that influenced modern Country music and is probably the best era of Country music ever. Amazing!

That title track was beautiful. I could understand why it was voted as her second best song according to Rolling Stone.

I wasn't sure where this would land. All the hoopla since her death, she's been on a high pedestal. The first Dolly album we were fed, Trio, did not hit high for me, so I was skeptical on this one. But I had fun listening to it. Her voice, her wit and her musicianship all came through.

I'm sorry to all the diehards, but country just really isn't my cup of tea. I've given it an extra point as it's Dolly and she's an icon.

Rest in Peace Queen! Some solid sweet stuff in this album despite country not really being big thing for me, but this sounds so sincere and honest that you can't help but enjoy this and smile, at least 3, perhaps 4 stars. P.S. Nah, after finishing this, it's definitely no doubt 4 stars!

I liked coat of many colors and Here I am

The more Dolly Parton I listen to, the more that every new song sounds like every other song I've already listened to of hers. I appreciate the simplicity of their composition; fiddle, steel guitar, bass, and vocals. Though, the simplicity of the songs leads to their homogenous sound. Dolly's strength lies in her musical storytelling, and the first two tracks, Coat of Many Colors and Traveling Man stand out for that aspect. Truly a great album for those who know what they like and want to keep listening to it. Personally, I'm not a huge country guy, so songs like these without any unique captivating melodies or choruses are a bit of a drag to get through, although a possible exception could be found in the bassline of "Early Morning Breeze." A very short album, at 27mins, it didn't overstay its welcome. I preferred Trio. RIP Dolly. 🧥🧥

Dolly has a really nice vibrato and the band sounds good. Some good lyrics too but none of the songs really stood out to me.

My favorite Dolly album. She was a queen

A fantastic listen. Dolly really was one of a kind. Her vibrato voice is powerful and gentle and her lyrics are so moving. I’ll come back to this one often.

Honestly this mostly slaps. Some "Joseph's Coat of Many Colors" Jesus type stuff in there which didn't really resonate with me. "he made me watch him love another woman and he tried to make me love another man" is a crazy lyric tbh But as a whole yeah I'm into it

It didn't catch. All the songs seemed the same. Perhaps the texts were supposed to impress, but I didn't notice much depth either.

2.8/5 - One Dolly Parton album was enough for me.

This was pretty boring. I love lots of older Country Pop, but this really wasn’t it. It felt very basic, and I’m very tired of people overrated all of Dolly’s work, she seemed like a great person, but she was quite a basic artist. Nothing on this album stood out to me, but several tracks were enjoyable. I don’t imagine I’ll revisit this.

Decent country album, but wouldn’t revisit as the songs are solid, but not memorable.

The title song is very sweet and earnest, in the Dolly style, then jumps right into a humorous Loretta Lynn type song with traveling man. It reminds me a lot of the Loretta album we had before, mixing funny and heartfelt. These tunes are more of the classic country woman “stand by your man” but performed well. No question why these songs resonated with audiences back in 1971 and are beloved today. Short and sweet. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Two killers open the record (both really sneakily much more than they seem), and there are a few more good ones mixed in with some lesser-built songs. Still, Dolly's performance across all of it is pure, brilliant, and a delight.

Ten snappy, sweet, gutsy songs in under 30 minutes. Dolly knew her business.

We didn't deserve Dolly Parton, and yet we are so lucky to have been blessed with her life.

Lovely songs from a lovely lady. My Dad (born in South Wales, lived in SE England his entire life) loved this era of country, and so I guess I do too. Yes, it's kinda twee, but the vocals are absolutely perfect and the songwriting spot on. Jolene & Islands will forever be the 5-star standout Dolly tracks for me but I could happily listen to this again anytime.

Dolly Parton music is as sweet as she was, unfortunately not something I'd listen to much on my own.

Such a great and emotional listen. Pulls on the heartstrings a bit as well just hearing the stories and tales of Dolly's life growing up and how it changed her to be a better person overall. Lovely listen, rest in paradise Dolly Parton.

Overall it does what it says on the tin . Sad stories with a country twang and steel guitar Well this is hard , not least because Dolly passed in the last week . “Coat of Many Colour” is one of 3 songs that is guaranteed to get me to well up (along with “Mean” by Taylor Swift and “The leaving of Liverpool l” by the Dubliners) Music like all good art should cause an emotional reaction and this album does As an Englishman that grew up with Ernie the fastest milkman in the west as they only real country touchstone it’s hard not to class honky tonk as comedy- especially if they are humorous like traveling man.
