I was NOT expecting to see this record on this list. I love it. "There Goes the Fear," "Words," and "Pounding" are some of my favorite songs from this early-2000s indie period. It's probably too long, I'll give you that. But. Man, I haven't heard this in YEARS. This is going to be fun. Hold on, let me put on my ironic sport coat, skinny jeans, and black Chucks. I'll be right back. - Ok that's better. This album still holds up. It's pretty upbeat, especially for an album called "The Last Broadcast." I had forgotten how good every song on this album actually is. "NY," "M62 Song," "The Sulphur Man." And I was wrong about the album being too long. Individual songs are a bit too long, but when you're enjoying them - why cut them short? This is my jam. An easy - FOUR STARS
This feels more modern than 2002 to me somehow. It's very enjoyable when I'm in the mood for it.
From an American perspective maybe my main criticism of this list is that 2000’s British indie bands are overrepresented. There are some good records that fit that category of course, but like one or two would have been enough? Anyway this is fine.
dull and uncreative. sometimes even annoying to listen.
Eh it’s ok. I liked the songs but they just weren’t interesting enough.
it is boring
Day1031 - no wonder i never heard of them. their best songs sound like coldplay wannabe.
I think this is a significant step up from the other Doves album on the list, even if the majority seems to disagree with me. For me, Doves were one of the better bands from a pretty mediocre bunch of late 90s and early 00s post britpop groups that kind of faded away with the rise of more urgent indie rock from The Strokes or Franz Ferdinand. I'd certainly much rather listen to this album than Travis or Embrace.
This is well crafted indie-psychedelia-grunge. THERE GOES THE FEAR has infectious rhythm and intentional instrumental filling coolness!! N.Y. was another earworm of mellow-hip... Now, I'm kind of hoping we get some Elbow in the list.
Tried to determine if any of Doves music was on Veronica Mars because it reminds me of the same sort of indie alt vibe that was on the 2004 tv show. So I kind of liked it
Sounded like a Coldplay knockoff. I don't like Coldplay.
I'm surprised I hadn't listened to this before, given that I grew up bang in the middle of the 2000s indie boom. Definitely of that era, which made me predisposed to enjoy it.
Good, reminded me of Radiohead and The Killers
An excellent indie album. This sonic atmosphere wouldn't be heard in the mainstream until the following decade. At least 10 years ahead of its time. 4 stars.
Very good indie rock that occasionally strays into middle-of-the-road territory.
This is #day806 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... not so long ago I got my first Doves record, and here's to the second and final one, aka crossing another artist off the list. A little bit of cheating this time, as I'm catching up with it the next day instead of listening to it on the day I got it. Over the course of 806 albums, this has happened 3 or 4 times, and I'm sorry about it. As it goes in one song on this album, though, "Friday's dust turned into a Saturday's, it wasn't meant to be this way." So perhaps it's alright. As with the debut, this is a 3 out of 5. Decent, but I'm not sure you must hear this before you die. Looking forward to #day807.
Prima achtergrondmuziek
Habe schon viel schlechteres gehört.
Quite like this.
not much to say, need another listen
2002!! sounds mid 90s
Скучно до смерти, да ещё и больше часа
I'm on song 4 and there's something impressive of how this one folds down. 2, 4 and 6 are my favorites so far. There's something that bothers me about the vocals here. I'm not sure what. Something nice about 9. Very sweet. 11 is quit lovely aswell. I think it deserves a 3. It's not all consistent but it has it charm
Not 100% sure if I actually listened to this or not but I think I did
Never heard of them. Intro was not needed (pretentious). Words says nothing (neither with words nor with music), just drags. There Goes The Fear is banal, can hardly listen to first part of the song without skipping - I see why reviewers might call this Coldplay-ish post-Radiohead, I perceive more than enough production time/depth invested in not enough song idea. Successive songs are no better. The little bits of music are not actually bad but the total effect leaves me wondering why bother? It’s Pretty Poor, 3/10
Like it 3/5
I see all the blinkered, sad Americans moaning of another British band on the list again. Must be boring having to listen to stuff you dont know, eh? Still, this is not quite Cleetus Klondyke and the Cousinfuckers, so I understand your disappointment.
Wavers between generic early 00s alt-rock and weirdo rock made by someone who likes Neutral Milk Hotel but can't commit to being that weird.
I had to replay this more than once because although I wasn’t initially impressed, I could see this growing on me. That did happen with a few songs, but only a fraction. I do love There Goes the Fear, though, because it’s in the (500) Days of Summer soundtrack, so it’s very nostalgic to me. 2.5 Top tracks: Words, There Goes the Fear, N.Y., Satellites
Every song felt so close to being interesting but just wasnt.5
Apparently Doves were massive during the 00s indie takeover, and I can see why they’ve been somewhat forgotten. This was a struggle to listen to. Maybe a better vocalist could’ve made it slightly more interesting but the songs themselves are just so over produced and over written, completely losing any personality or emotion
Beatles/Radiohead inspired attempts that aren't terrible, but also aren't not-terrible
Meh
I had a friend who LOVED this album. I like a couple songs.
Bought this when it came out and enjoyed it then, nice to give it another spin. Good band, good album.
Betraying myself yet again as an indie fan boy
Not so inspiring
Nostalgia not enough to elevate this to average
🫰🏻
Ne slikti ne super labi, bet man patika
I read a few reviews before starting this and basically expected this to be a duplicate version of Coldplay. So I was a little taken off guard by "N.Y.", because Coldplay could never go that hard. I think I would have preferred that alternate universe where these guys made it big instead of Coldplay, but I'm sure I would have treated them with the same contempt anyway. What are the later records like, do they end up doubling down on being desperately melancholic and boring too? Either way, this is a solid record in one of my favorite niche subgeners: vaguely-indie, post-Oasis, post-Radiohead, rock & roll.
Squeezed in this listen today. Mostly in the car. However, i also listened to this a few times earlier this year. Solid Britpop sound with some dreamy psych added to it.
Usual 2
2.75/5
I liked! Bit bloated, but good - never ungood!
Not my stuff.
White bread with unsalted butter: bland
I feel like I just listened to the same song for 53 minutes.
This was alright. Doves came at a weird period for British guitar music.. the hedonism of Britpop had faded and the mid 00s indie explosion was just getting started. In this interim we had artists like Travis, Coldplay and David Gray doing Radiohead impressions. I like those artists although found this album a little flat..Maybe because the singer's voice is so monotone. The singles There Goes The Fear and Pounding are good tunes, but the rest passed me by a little.
I like music i swear i like music. I just hate the British
I hadn't heard of the Doves before. Their album “The Last Broadcast” is practically the definition of mediocre: the songs are OK, the vocals are OK, the production is fine - but none of it is particularly exciting. It's the kind of music that can play quietly in the background without bothering anyone.
a bit light, one song like a coldplay-lite, another a bit ethereal. Not up my street
imagine how much less annoying indie rock would be if it was a genre where people actually learned how to sing properly instead of whatever this is. there's some good ideas, but they can't crawl their way out of the barrel of sonic ooze for long enough to assert themselves properly
This album was okay. Nothing special to me. Sounded like a less edgy Arctic Monkeys or Radiohead imitation. While I didn't dislike it, it was tough to get through. Favorite tracks were M62 Song and Friday's Dust (but only cause of the clarinet part).
Pounding and There Goes the Fear are great but most of it is forgettable
It really didn’t feel memorable in many ways. I found myself feeling like it was just a cheap knockoff of Coldplay.
Fairly ordinary, atmospheric post-Radiohead UK radio alt rock. Inoffensive and perfectly listenable but it offers nothing particularly memorable.
++: Intro, N.Y., Friday's Dust +: Words, M62 Song, We're Calling From, Last Broadcast, The Sulphur Man +-: There Goes the Fear, Satellites, Caught by the River -: Pounding 5,5/10
This is perhaps the dictionary definition of "generic".
Coldplay if they were good. This was actually pretty strong, not that original, but I enjoyed the listen. Had that 2000s post-britpop sound with plenty of indie rock and pop influences.
Again a great record by Doves. I'm not sure they needed two albums, but I get they are equally filled with quality so I don't mind.
Kent möter Oasis och jag gillar inte Oasis.
I liked this more than I thought I would. I went in expecting generic British rock album part 60 but it was pretty decent and I enjoyed my time quite a bit. There Goes the Fear is a great track.
Album 326. The Last Broadcast — Doves (2002) Indie britpop… No❌ 2/5 No liked songs
an ok indi rock/folk album. Not sure I see the love for this, a solid 2 stars
It's good, I enjoy it, particularly Caught By The River. Although as an entire piece of work it doesn't blow me away. I do like how much it will likely annoy Americans, however.
Didn't really enjoy the other Doves album but even though this was is similar I found a lot more I liked about this one. Probably just a mood thing. 6/10
More generic Brit Pop? Pass.
Really nice big guitar sound. Quite moody but still plenty of movement.
Solidly fine. Nothing that makes it stand out.
Never heard of these guys but a fantastic album. They wove so many different sounds from indie rock and electronic and ethereal. Drags a bit on the back half
I don't think I've ever heard these guys. The GPT description sounds promising. I really like the slow ominous sounding intro to this first track! Oh wait, I've totally heard "There Goes the Fear" I like this so far. It's mellow and atmospheric. Friday's Dust is pretty. This was a great album man. 5 stars.
This album is pretty bland at certain moments, but I can't deny I've liked listening to it. At first it felt like a mixture of some light goth elements with Coldplay. Then I found it was not the case. Not in the Coldplay aspect, as, at certain moments, it could be an album of them… just that this one is more interesting and sonically diverse. For sure, I've found some songs to be really nice. And I've enjoyed it overall. Not that everything is good, but, as a whole, this album works pretty well. Also, I've liked that the string arrangements give some depth to the songs, sometimes making the listening experience of this album a bit cinematic and intriguing. Sure it is not mindblowing, nor a very memorable album, but it has its moments, and its songs, being a very listenable and even enjoyable album.
I was very uncertain when this came up today. A British band I'd never heard of before, in a genre that I loved initially but have been growing tired of over the course of the past 1 1/2 years. I saw comparisons to Coldplay, and that gave me pause as well. I am a fan of their early albums, but not at all after the first three. It turns out that Doves are a perfect (IMO) blend of early Coldplay and mid 80's U2 and I was all in for it. Had they asked me for advice, this is the kind of music I'd have suggested at the time. I know it's manipulative and yet I'm a total sucker for it. Standouts were Words, Satellites, Pounding, and Caught By the River. It'll get four stars as there were a few songs I just didn't vibe with at all.
Almost very middle of the road indie rock except there is something interesting going on here. I didn't hate it, but I probably wouldn't listen again. There's a massive amount of instruments but unfortunately underutilised.
I remember that Doves were going to be big and put Coldplay on the shelf. I wonder what happened. This doesn't feel like a cohesive record and I listened to it on repeat a few times without realising it because it felt a little same-sy. I don't dislike the record but I'm struggling to remember it.
i hear that it’s good but i don’t like it
Everything I disliked about early 2000’s radio hits all in one album. They sound like a depressed Coldplay cover band.
I would call this one. Frustrating. A lot of their songs have great openings and there's a certain variety to it, but in the end it's just another band of the Coldplay era
This was bang average. People comparing it to Coldplay haven’t got a scooby. The king crimson cover(ish) was okay I guess
Coldplay for pessimists - some great moments and strong songwriting, but nothing to really draw me into immersion. Probably sounded way better than it is after that throbbing pile of crap for #213
Yea that was a pretty average indie rock album from the 2000s. Nothing really bad but nothing to write home about.
Honestly, pleasantly surprised. I'd never heard of them but based on a 2003 release date and the album cover (yes I judged a band by their album cover) I thought this was going to be some angsty screamo shit. Enjoyed this indie rock fusion. A little unmemorable and not sure why it made the list but not bad.
Wie es einer aus den Kommentaren treffend beschreibt. Man muss sich durch viel britischen Müll hören, um die Juwelen zu finden
Teilweise gut, dann aber wieder langweilig
Mid
low key, nice, pleasant
2 stars for the 2 songs on this album that weren't absolute dog water.
Wow I love this album cover a lot. This is probably a three but that song Words is top tier, now in my rotation
PowerPoint ass looking font on the cover matches the shit music
I liked this. Not in a “give me more” way, but in a “that was a nice experience” way. Some of it reminded me of Coldplay, even the voice of the guy sometimes. It was just a nice listen. 4/5 ⭐️ 252/1089
Words starts off very U2ish. Then the lead singer kicks in and it just kind of felt super meh. They aren't bad, but they don't do anything that makes me jump up and say wow thats awesome. I did enjoy There Goes the Fear but not enough to give this more than 3. Its a band that could be on my Spotify Discover Weekly and I wouldn't fast forward but I don't think I would take the time to like them.
There Goes The Fear is such a great song, but the rest of this was new to me. I like how deep and soulful the album is, and how they take you through rockin' catchy sounds and more ethereal places too. They have Coldplay vibes, but I like them better. Really enjoyed it!
Wasn’t expecting to enjoy as much as I did. Def interested in listening to other Doves albums
It’s alright. Very much an average album.
Kind of folky pop rock music that is not bad. I listened to it a couple of times because I enjoyed it. Nothing really stood out but it's a nice album to maybe put on for background music to a chilled out relax session.
Not bad. It's just like Coldplay
True classic
