Easy listening - cool
Because this is very much one's scene – the droning in a minor key, the chimings as slight beacons of hope, the melancholia tinged with intensity without any sign of overseriousness – one is somewhat baffled that Doves escaped one's full attention in turn-of-the-millennia real-time. The very strong openers sets the tone and the every cut contributes. The chaotic, rocky bits work, as do the folkier passages. It's dramatic, but not too, and feels organically/authentically so (that's what makes them similar to Radiohead and much better than later Coldplay). More assured and mature than the earlier records (which is also quite good), this is solid from top to bottom and very much worth a return listen (even on semi-regular rotation, one should think).
Indie rock, post-Britpop, dream pop. Bastante normalito al principio. Al final un poco mejor, pero nada del otro mundo. Nada nuevo. Aún así, suenan bien, agradables.
I like Doves, not love, but pretty strong like. Enough interesting elements to keep my attention and enjoyable enough to warrant repeated listening.
I was surprised by how much I liked this one. Sort of gave me Coldplay vibes without Martin's annoying voice, but with interesting songs. I'll probably listen to this one again, seemed like a solid album on first litsen.
Enjoyed it, recommended to Nel
I like it
Man, that's a good album. The only reason I'm not giving it full marks is because, while it sounds exactly like an album from 2002 should sound (strong Air / Coldplay / Explosions in the Sky / Muse vibes here), it's just... not quite there. It never fully pays off. But it comes SO CLOSE and I really really enjoyed it. In fact, it's going to get a second listen.
If you liked the Black Saint part wait until you get to the Sinner Lady part. Fire energy. Really cool melodies across the whole ensemble.
The whole time I was thinking that this was a background music type of album but I think it deserves more credit than that. There are a lot of really good songs on here, like There Goes That Fear and Last Broadcast, and I felt the album flowed well throughout. There were enough changes of pace to keep your attention, as well. The slight hints of indie, pop, and rock sounds from the early 2000s are like little bits of nostalgia that give it a familiar feeling. Overall I throughly enjoyed this album and I’m interested to see what else Doves has in their repertoire.
A very good album, but not exactly innovative, or so outstanding that it's more memorable than many other albums that aren't on this list... I like it a lot, I bought it when it came out and listened to it a bunch then, but probably haven't heard it in 20 years. Still holds up, but I don't really understand why it's on this list.
A good listen but not mind-blowing
Oh man, haven't listened to this for an age. Great first half and a bit, tails off at the end a bit.
one of the best bands i've never heard of so far
It was a chill, ethereal album experience…
Love this album Favourites- there is no fear
Indie rock. Me ha recordado a Muse. Me ha gustado. Un 4.
did it sound like Coldplay? yes, but I was jammin.
I actually liked this quite a bit. I really liked the reverby, jangly vibe on songs like Words, NY, and the closer. I also really liked the woodwinds on Friday's Dust. A little long for sure, and half of the material wasn't memorable, but the upbeat stuff was great.
Kind of a Coldplay meets Oasis vibe - a solid album worth a listen, not quite an all time classic, though.
Favorite song :Words Least : sulphur man I listened to this album 3 times, every time I listened to it I liked it more. Pounding gives major Coldplay vibes.
Had never heard of this band or album. Good background music.
The Doves made a great album and this is it. If this was something I had never heard until yesterday, it would probably be a 5. But this one was in my rotation basically from the minute it dropped. It's an innovative sound throughout, big and fearless. I almost thought it was like the sound Coldplay wished they could achieve at the time. Various tempos, landscapes. Great lyrics throughout. I listened again yesterday though I know it well enough I could have rated it blind.
Baroque was already considered old-fashioned when Bach wrote the greatest pieces of the genre. With this album, the doves did the same with the Manchester sound. It flags a bit towards the end. But still a great album.
I really liked this one. Gave me a lot of early Coldplay vibes. I love the flow between songs. Favorites were Intro/Words, There Goes the Fear, and The Sulphur Man
A far better album than the previous Doves record — dynamic and well structured. They stayed in shape in terms of musicianship, but are growing as songwriters.
First impression (Track 1) - kinda of Oasis-y (in a good way). I really liked M62 - good brit rock and a little funky N.Y. is pretty trippy - not my thing. Satellites brings up a lot of Coldplay vibes, and while it may not be terribly original, I still enjoy having it on.
Somehow I missed this rather major post-Britpop band altogether. I really enjoyed it, shades of Noel Gallagher and Coldplay when they were great.
Super fun. It’s going in the rotation. 4 stars
Loved this album since it came out.
There was a haunting element to this album that i really enjoyed. Another hidden gem...
Bro it’s a masterpiece
It’s no Lost Souls but still a banger of an album with some great tracks
Super
Strange that I'd never listened to it before but I liked it
I know some of you are big mad about the list by a British guy having a bunch of British music on it but stop calling everything recorded by British groups Britpop, it makes you sound dumb. Well-produced, soaring, apocalyptic sounding, turn of the century psychedelic rock, 4 stars.
Prettige verrassing, prima indie rock, verder niet grandioos bijzonder.
Lots of other people have remarked on the similarities between this and Coldplay, and I won't disagree. Well, except that I *like* this album, and have yet to like anything from Coldplay, really. Standout tracks for me: Words, Satellites, Pounding
Doves came along amidst what I would call a post-Radiohead and, to a lesser extent, post-britpop wave that included bands like Elbow and Coldplay. They were in a group that was exploring softer, less-stereotypically masculine approaches to rock. Now I was deeply enraptured with some of this stuff, and Doves in particular. I was in a band and in some ways Doves represented what I then saw as a high water mark. So of course, it's impossible to impartially (if there is even such a thing) judge this album. It's too entrenched in me. This is a beautiful sounding album, full of soundscapes pulled from all over. Strings, latin percussion, sound effects, the kitchen sink, all lovelingly woven together. This is a studio album and was perhaps the opposite to a lot of "back to the garage" stuff that was going on at the same time (hives, strokes, white stripes etc. etc. etc.) The songs are ambitiously written, with an ear towards emotionality rather than the intellectual approach of prog rock. I love the singing, and the guitars come in and out tastefully. New York is a miss for me lyrically, although pretty great musically. I think it must of been inspired in that immediate post 9/11 era that sometimes gave over into maudlin sentiments such as "we're all better off in New York". Sure, Jimi. Anyway, this album is full of lush melancholy and bittersweetness and care and ambitious cinematic orchestrations. I never quite understood why Coldplay was allowed to sell out and Doves never did. But I'm glad they didn't.
Standouts: There Goes the Fear Others: M62 Song, Friday’s Dust, Pounding, Caught by the River 3.75
They sold me.
Enjoyed this - need to revisit
Niet onmiddellijk oorwormen, maar wel toffe nummers.
This would get four stars for “Words” alone. As it is, the album’s a repeat listener. Cool and tight with a style I don’t know what to call. Like if 10cc kept it up. Canadian.
The intro hit and I thought, "oh boy, another one of these." Then there was Words... oh, I'm interested now... There Goes The Fear? There goes my initial concerns, this is a groove. Reminds me of The Shins, but brighter. Like a festival version of The Shins... Kinda kept that vibe going. NY was a bit more of a miss for me. Satellites was good. Friday's Dust was.. something completely different. The Sulphur Man was back to the good stuff. Caught by the River is definitely my jam. Has a Christian rock feel, but in that Vertical Horizon kinda way. This is good. This band will make the rotation.
Doves vs. Elbow, fight! Or write gently melancholy tunes with a northern lilt, either or will suffice. This album's a solid contribution. Some singalong classics which have aged incredibly well. Definitely eternal 6 Music playlist-worthy.
Good one
I really liked this! I know some people might be a down on Doves potentially for being landfill indie. But I saw them a few years ago and they gave a fab performance. Catchy tunes
I honestly really dig their sound. Words and There Goes the Fear are excellent tracks, if not a little bit too long.
Quite good, if a little Coldplay-y at times
I never listened to Doves when they were popular, but I recognise loads of songs on the album. Some dross, but There Goes The Fear, NY, and Friday's Dust were highlights.
Had not heard much of these guys but thought it was really good. Reminded me a lot of Feeder who I also like. Highlights: Words There Goes The Fear N.Y. Pounding Caught By The River
Was quite into doves for a while when this album was released but had since completely forgotten about them. Think they are man city fans and I had tickets to see them at the Etihad years ago! There goes the fear, Satellites and Friday's dust were the highlights
Woh. This was LOUD. There's a great 60's garage feel going off. There Goes the Fear is close to perfection for the period. The best guitar bands always come from a dance background. I do miss Doves.
This was surprisingly great. Surprising just because I’d never heard of them and enjoyed this a lot
I have never heard of this before and I love it. Great early 2000s indie rock. Very chill and I will listen again for sure.
I liked this one. Wasn’t really in the mood for this style today, but I thought it was cool and sounded well done. Some of the kind of spacey sounds on here are really trendy now. I may come back to this when I’m in the mood for something darker. Cover art: 6/10 I really like the lettering
The transition from intro into words 😫😫😫 I dig the fuzzy vocals on M62 Didn’t listen that much tbh…I was into it tho
Had a long day so gonna keep this short. This album is kinda right uo my alley as far what I’ve been listening to lately. At times Melancholic and ant others, ethereal — checks all the boxes for me. Listened to this last night and it spoke to me on a spiritual level. listening again tonight, just don’t think I’m in the mood. 100% will be revisiting and looking into more of the doves. Heard b4: none Favs: words, pounding, m62, satellites MMM: WORDS THEY MEAN NOTHIN SO YOU CANT HURT MEHHH
A couple of very familiar tracks but can't say I've ever heard of them. Coldplay contemparies
I really liked this one, as well as the spotify radio songs that kept playing once the album was finished.
I really like the production on this album; everything comes across so cleanly. With songs that are practically a better Coldplay, this is a great listen.
Comparisons to early Coldplay is justified. And to me that’s in the best way possible. Love late 90s/early 00s Britpop
I really really liked it.! But I kept feeling like there was something missing that would take this album to the next level. It was so so good but should have felt "something" that set it apart. Solid 4/5
Decent 7/10
Hard to look past the nostalgia on this one, so I won't. A nearly perfect artistic statement. Front to back argument for album as an artform. These guys treated the recording studio as an instrument as well as anyone.
It's been a long time coming, but Adam and I finally agreed on something! But this more than pleasantly surprised me, even though it wasn't particularly extraordinary. Even when I thought a song was going to be the dealbreaker for me, it somehow always pulled through.
Quite Coldplay-esque, with a bit more of a dream pop thing going on. Good stuff.
I feel like I’ve come across the name Doves before, but I can’t place where. Before listening to the album today, I had no idea if I’d recognise any of the songs, or even what type of music to expect. Songs I already knew: Words, Pounding Favourites: Words, Pounding It’s strange yet wonderful how Manchester developed its own unique sub-genre of rock music. I was listening to this today, and partway through I thought to myself that they seem like a Manchester band. I can’t quite place why, as the singing isn’t really accented in any way, but it just sounds like other Manchester bands. It turned out that there were some songs that I recognised, and I really enjoyed them. I do write this with a little bias in that I’ve always lived 20 minutes away from Manchester, so I’ve been surrounded by music like this all my life. This was a nice album for a Sunday afternoon. I recommend it.
The into to There Goes The Fear sounds like the intro to a parenting video series I'm currently watching. Pounding is a great track and I would like to dive more into this band.
Fijne sfeervolle plaat.
I don't mind this indie rock style. Some influences from synth, punk, and so on. Would listen again.
Kind of U2ish, I suppose. Kind of liked it. Won't rush out and listen to it again anytime soon, but won't turn it off if it comes up in my feed.
Strong post-Britpop album.
Another band I hadn't heard of (that UK indie scene): immediate reference point was Alt-J, though clearly if there is an influence, it went the opposite direction timeline-wise. Generally very good, though I couldn't pick up much lyrically on one listen.
The Last Broadcast felt like a warm hug, so familiar and comforting with their Indie rock/neo-psychedelia sound. You really can't beat the sound of the early 2000s Brit rock with an infectious, melancholy and ultimately euphoric barrage of sound wrapped in a sheeting of guitars and subtle effects this was one I wish I had heard earlier. Best: There Goes The Fear Worst: The Sulphur Man 3.5 Stars
I liked it. Nice to have it in the background.
Some tracks are quite brilliant, others rather boring and "Words" is the one to listen on repeat. I'll be coming back to Doves.
Great album of Post-Britpop that has some problems here and there with keeping the vibe over time.
Amazing how much recognition can improve your enjoyment. There Goes the Fear sparked joy and New York increased it. Probably still only a four star album. Moments of greateness.
Aughts-era indie rock is my kryptonite. Can't get enough. This is really cool, it takes the best elements of britpop but mixes them with some indie rock stylings to downplay the obnoxious elements. I'm shocked I've never listened to them before. THE CRIMSON INTERPOLATION THOUGH. Hell yes!
Indie rock, post-Britpop, dream pop. Bastante normalito al principio. Al final un poco mejor, pero nada del otro mundo. Nada nuevo. Aún así, suenan bien, agradables.
Wasn't as good as I remembered/ expected
Enjoyed that.
pretty good album - always liked Doves
Low key good.
This band kind of comes across like a Coldplay meets Elbow The Soundtrack Of Our Lives mash-up. They're pretty good, I'm not too keen on the vocals, but the band takes the songs in some interesting ways! These lyrics caught my attention: All the hope And all the wonder All the strength that they can muster Won't go They won't get me down Key tracks: Words, There Goes The Fear, M62 Song, Satellites, Pounding, Last Broadcast, Caught By The River 7,5 out of 10
Great dreamy vocals, need to listen more
Singles are great - rest is also very decent.
This is an interesting mix of influences. I hear New Order, Oasis, Echo and the Bunnymen. Even some Spiritualized and, of course, Radiohead. Moodiness abounds but doesn't drag the album down. At times they even get close to anthemic - they just stop on edge of dramatic. The songs are quite strong throughout. Some of this stew works quite well. Where We're Calling From segues into NY in a very nice way that is a highlight to me. While this would noy make my 1001 list, it is a very solid listen.
Never heard of this band. It wasn't bad. I think I need to listen to this again in a few days. It's like the war on drugs album I got a few days ago. It didn't immediately capture me, but possibly waiting a few days and relistening will help.
Wavy as hell. If this were ice cream, the flavor would be cotton candy. If it were a drink, it would probably be strawberry milk.
i love this album, and there goes the fear is low key the best end credits song for any movie
Band and album I've never heard of gone right. This was a really nice, softer rock project with some fantastic tunes and melodies. I can't think who to compare this to, but there were just a handful of really nice tracks waiting for me around each corner. I'm saving quite a few of these, and I honestly don't even care to look up the band because I like the mystery here, it's very vague. Favorite tracks: Words, M62 Song, NY, Friday's Dust, Pounding. Album art: Very blurry, both on the website and Apple Music. Is that by design? Regardless, I do like the imagery and colors here, an aerial shot of nighttime streets under an ominous sky. Is it really night or day, is that the sun? No idea, it's all a mystery. 4/5
Interesting - Coldplay-esque but a bit hipper - yet they lack the hit factory appeal of the former. Still a nice member of this list of records I might have missed otherwise.
This album wore me down. I put up my "this sounds like Oasis and I don't like it" armor, but as the album when on, I just thought some of these songs were jaw droppingly beautiful.
Better than I expected
This was a pleasant surprise. Never heard of ‘doves’. Unlike other artists, this album seems to contain long songs that are instrumentally diverse(leaning towards a softer, simpler Radiohead), and multi-layered to the extent that several tracks (Ex: Satellites, Fridays Dust) seemed like multiple songs within one. Definitely some interesting textures going on with this album. My only complaint are the weak vocals. Not sure if it was intentional, but it’s almost like the music deserves more. More reaching, more range, just seems wet noodle against the strong melody and rhythms. The last track “Caught by the River” is my favorite.
Unexpectedly poggers
Enjoyable album. Maybe not a must-hear. Had a Coldplay vibe to it.
Solid 4 from me. I think more listens might have bumped it up to a 5 but I’ve still got about 800 albums to go so that might have to wait. There Goes the Fear an absolute standout.
Excellent 4+/5
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this album. I was very impressed with the tracks specifically, only a few songs I thought had melodies strong enough to hang on to. The guitar tones all throughout were really unique and didn’t get boring to listen to. The sonic space created in some of the songs were really nice to listen to. The vocals weren’t all that impressive, but they did have some nice moments throughout the album. Didn’t really connect lyrically with much, but maybe I just wasn’t listening hard enough. Overall enjoyed listening and musically was really pleasant. Might dive into it again for the guitar tones hehe
Really enjoyed this and will listen to their other albums.
The vocalist and melancholic vibe reminds me a lot of Coldplay. The experimental rock sound is reminiscent of Radiohead. The loud and busy production has been a trend in Britpop since Oasis. No matter which song it is, there are other bands I can find in them, but it's interesting nonetheless. Coherent yet full of innovative sounds, creating this ethereal landscape, evoking both happy and sad emotions simultaneously. I can hear jazz and post-rock, but it's also very fast and rhythmic, almost never calming down. The beats of many songs almost make them sound like club hits, but I couldn't see myself playing this for any dance audience except just to vibe to with headphones. Several weak songs, but this is a breed of Coldplay I really enjoyed. Favorites: There Goes the Fear, M62 Song, N.Y., Friday's Dust, Sulphur Man
Somewhere between the colorful '90s britpop and the grey, melancholic '00s indie rock, this album lies with its epic pitch black indie rock goodness. But I don't know if it's the relatively outdated sound, or the whiny vocals, or simply the self-indulgence of it that turned me off towards the end. A more developed and concise version of this would've been a 5. Still, a pleasant surprise.
N.Y. is the jam
Better Coldplay but a little long and repetitive
Nice atmospheric indie rock
I have never heard of this band or album before and I'm so happy to have heard them now. Catchy indie/poppy melodies sang over mid 90s modulation. Clearly inspired by R.E.M. and taking modern electronic guitars and production in stride this was incredibly listenable. I didn't hear anything tremendously groundbreaking but I didn't hear anything that made me want to turn it off either 7/10
4.25
listened to it in the morning on a foggy morning, was really awesome
A little too much forlornness in the vocal for a single sitting, but I really enjoyed this and almost every song got added to rotations.
Every time I get another album from a British band I’ve never heard of, I groan a little bit. However, this album surprised me. I would listen to this again.
Another nice effort from this era
Surprised I’ve never heard of this album before. I would have listened to it a ton in college haha. Overall enjoyed
Went into this album expecting to hate it. But this was wonderful. Favorite track: Pounding
This became much more of a pleasure to listen to than I thought on first listen. It's wonderfully dreamy, slightly experimental britpop like Elbow or Blur, but with the cheerful gloominess of Coldplay, Travis or The Verve. And then with a hint of Kula Shaker. It's a good blend of all the melancholic and melodic Britpop bands of that era, but this album stands by itself.
Exactly the type of indie album you’d have featured in a mid-2000’s romantic comedy probably released by Fox Searchlight. Beautiful, melancholic with just the right amount of jaded optimism. Lovely.
meh
Solid. Wasn’t a song I didn’t like honestly. Kind of formulaic but a very nice sound. Would listen again
Definitely an early 00’s album but I liked it a lot
Pleasant surprise. I’ll admit that I’m a bit partial to Brit-pop, especially the depressing moody ones like Radiohead, and this seems to be right in that genre. I like the dark feeling of the album and although a couple of the songs go a bit overboard on sound effects, I really like it. Will definitely check out other albums by Doves now.
4/5. It was cool, reminded me a lot of muse
Great tunes, I think Lost Souls is probably a better album but this is a great listen, more polished sound
I quite like this album too. I have heard of the Doves but I dont think I had heard them. This has a good pre-Muse sound to ir.
Goei album! Nog nooit van Doves gehoord.
Decent album. Solid all the way through, can't complain, but nothing that blew me away.
Really nice album. Know "Sea Song" quite well, otherwise I've never heard of this band. 3 Kinda Coldplay-ish. I love it. 4
Great indie and grunge record
Cool album! Not quite indie in the modern essence of the genre, more alternative rock in the early 2000s sense. Some cool tracks like Pounding and an overall great sound.
Quite an enjoyable indie rock album! Great opening track and also the other songs didn't disappoint but made up for a high quality experience
fun fact: la pochette a été générée par une IA à partir des mots clés "crise" et "angoisse"
Indie rock. Me ha recordado a Muse. Me ha gustado. Un 4.
Indie rock, post-Britpop, dream pop. Bastante normalito al principio. Al final un poco mejor, pero nada del otro mundo. Nada nuevo. Aún así, suenan bien, agradables.
Good energy.
This was really enjoyable British pop with fun, creative instrumentation throughout. Unfortunately, Doves hadn't ever made it to my attention before. Maybe there's just a limited supply that makes it across the Atlantic, so we miss out on some great stuff over here. This was good listenin'!
Yeah, I thought it was pretty good.
Never heard of 'em. But this is some good solid early oughts rock/pop. I really liked Words, N.Y., Pounding, and Caught By the River. Good show.
I fell in love with "There Goes The Fear" in the early 2000s, which lead me to this album. It went into heavy rotation for five or so years. Sometime since then I sort of lost track of the Doves. What a great album! I still get goosebumps as "Intro" transitions into "Words." The Doves have an epic, beautiful, sound and The Last Broadcast brings a welcome boost of optimism. Yet throughout runs an undercurrent of complexity that does not dismiss the weight of the world. I love their technique where guitars that slowly detune underneath the beautiful vocals and harmonies with stadium-level grandeur. The music is complex and layered. If you listen on headphones there are many incredible layers to explore. Really enjoyed coming back to this again.
.5
Regardless of the album's title, The Last Broadcast sees Doves approaching their peak, with optimistic sounding singalongs that signaled their powers which led them to the top of the British charts. There are plenty of moments on this album that captures ones interest and doesn't let go and that attention becomes rewarded throughout. If this is considered Doves' best album, there's a reason why. Favorites: Words, There Goes the Fear, M62 Song, N.Y., Satellites, Last Broadcast, Caught by the River.
Ratio: 25% Pretty cool album, I like the flow of the music from song to song. Favs: There goes the fear / Pounding Dislikes: Where we're calling from / Friday's dust /
Vaya sorpresa, un sonido que definió los dosmiles
Probably need time to marinate, which is fine since I intend to listen again to most of it. Right now this is everything I'm looking for in an album that's new to me. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the songs that didn't remind of me of Coldplay.
Really enjoyable. There was plenty of interesting and deeply layered tracks... it really is nicely varied, with sparse quiet tracks like M62 but all finds angsty energy in the right parts. Really good album.
I very much enjoyed. Surprised myself.
Never even heard of Doves before but I liked their slower, mellower take on a grungy sound. This album felt thematically tied but with plenty of variation between songs to keep it feeling fresh.
I liked this. It's good indie rock though it definitely has a 00s sound. Still enjoyable though
Love it. This is new music to me. Reminded me a little of late 80s: early 90s Manchester music in parts. Stone Roses. But it did vary a bit. This is what I was hoping for out of this project
It’s nice to listen to while you are cooking and reading a book 4/5
Ovdje na coveru možemo vidjeti dio Hrvatske, točnije najbolji dio i najsiromašniji (Slavoniju) i ostatak. Ovo je mogu reći veoma underrated album, nikad čuo prešao mi preko radara, ali hvala za 1001. jer neb nikad ni čuo probably. Poslušajte, stvarno ima dobrih gem-ova na ovom albumu [There Goes the Fear, M62 Song, Where're We Calling From, Friday's Dust, Pounding, Last Broadcast..] ma zapravo, praktički cijeli album je dost dobar, baš ono čvrsta četvorka. najs.
I think I can now consider myself as a Doves FAN. Incredible album.
Wonderful album that surprised me. It could have been shorter to focus on quality, but it's a very nice piece of indie rock/britpop overall.
Better than I remember it being, really enjoyed it. Not quite five stars, but pretty damn close! There goes the fear, pounding, and Friday's dust were my favourites
Beautiful album.
Enjoyed! Good music to vibe to.
Obligatory "Hey, this sounds like Radiohead/Coldplay/Muse". Pretty good. Highlights for me include "N.Y.", "Caught by the River" and the kind of strange King Crimson cover(?) "M62 Song". More chill than I expected from the ominous album cover and title, both of which are awesome by the way. However, my favorite parts were when they slightly dipped their toes into a more grungy sound.
Very nostalgic indie rock. Really holds up unlike a lot of indie music of the time which sounds cheesy these days.
Liebe diesen droney Indie Disco Stomper. Biased 4.0
Having never heard of this before, I'm really impressed. Nice middle ground between the outgoing Britpop and the oncoming indie rock boom of the early 2000s. Too long though.
Interesting. Sounded more modern than '02. Not my favorite, but enjoyable.
Enjoyed this one a lot. Great tracks with big sound. No overly memorable tracks but all consistently good.
Want to listen to it more to form a better opinion. definitely interesting structures, liked some of their singles already but interested in the rest of their material.
Good
Glad I took the time to listen to this album. Had no idea what Doves would sound like and I was impressed. Solid indie-Brit pop with some fine songs and not really any bad ones, which is a good thing!
не ну норм такой электронный рокешник
Really enjoyed this album. I hadn't heard of them before, so that's always fun.
Mellow. Grunge. A touch of nostalgia despite the fact that I'm a very young millennial and hadn't heard of this group before. Love it.
long on the list of bands people love, never been my thing. alright i suppose, but not quite as gloomy as radiohead or spacy as stone roses, and a smidge too coldplay to be cool
This one is gonna be quick because I feel like shit, but I loved this artist. I always loved the strange vibes from radiohead that i haven't heard anywhere else. I couldn't listen to them too much though because it was filled with so much anxiety and depressive sounds that it brought me down. The doves have that vibe I wanted though, and it had all of the bad vibes taken out. A wonderful, modern, almost whimsical or fairytale like album 8.5/10 The only descriptor in my head is "modern fairytale"
An old favorite of mine. This is a very good album. I would have chosen Lost Souls, personally. Though not as consistent as The Last Broadcast, TLB lacks the greatness that Lost Souls has in spots. Still a fine album.... 4 🌟
Not great not terrible
I was really surprised by this one. It reminded me a bit like Radiohead, probably around the Kid A / Amnesiac period. Very space rock-y. Although the vocals felt a bit generic (stronger, more forceful than Yorke's). I liked how the album opened, the intro really made a great statement. Their interpretation of "Moonchild" was... interesting. Not sure if I would keep coming back to that song, but at least they credited King Crimson.
I enjoyed this. The vocals were great and the production was full of some nice little nuggets to sink my teeth into. Some of it fits in very well with a lot of the garage bands in the early 2000’s but I think the vocals make up for it and i enjoyed it more than The Strokes right away. Really liked the acoustic guitar work on “Caught By The River” - almost reminded me of Filter’s Take a Picture a little bit. Fave tracks: “Words” “Caught By The River” “N.Y.”
Kempegod.
This one really caught me by surprise in a positive way! I don't even know what it is. It's not terribly catchy and I'm not even sure how "good" it is but I really liked it both times through. Ended strong on the last track!
чиловый лёгкий инди поп рок, иногда интересное звучание, но в целом нет особо запоминающихся паттернов и ярких особенностей
sad dated and a bit boring. there goes the fear carries it
I liked the sound of this album. Coldplay mixed with Oasis with a little bit of shoegaze. 4.2/5
This is squarely my vibe. I liked the themes. I liked the tone for the most part. There wasn't a specific song that I loved, and at a few points I felt it dragged. This is going to be a 3 star, but a high 3. For sure the best 3 star so far.
surprising ly good
An omdcfavorite of mine. This is a very good album. I would have chosen List Souls, personally. Though not as consistent as The Last Broadcast, TLB lacks the greatness that Lost Souls has in spots. Still a fine album.... 4 🌟
great!
Solid, reminded me of Elbows a little. Will listen to some more of their stuff
Great post-Brit pop. Will listen to more of their work.
Oh man I haven’t listened to these songs in sooooo long. Great stuff. Holds well.
I love this album from front to back period
I had not heard of this band or album, and I don't recognize any of the songs, but it's really solid. I like their style. It's a nice blend of rock and pop, but has its own sound -- maybe "indie rock"? -- and I like how that edgy sound is balanced with vocals and vocal harmonies, plus catchy rhythms, that all make for a rather infectious mix. Very glad I've been introduced to them.
The type of dreamy indie rock that is right up my alley. Definitely enjoyed this one, and I’m gonna seek out more of their stuff in the future!

Production: 17/20 Songwriting: 15/20 Innovation: 15/20 Bangers: 15/20 Emotional response: 16/20 =78 What a lovely album chaps.
Really enjoyed this album. Wasn’t a massive fan of their when they were ‘popular’ back around 15 years ago but can really appreciate the music now. Caught by the River is great.
There Goes The Fear is one of my favorite songs ever
Naja
Wow I wish I had found this band earlier
I need to listen a couple more times to review the lyrics, etc... but it definitely sounds like something I would have been into in 2002. Still nice now, though!
Also really nice, kind of Radioheady. 4.5
Really great Britpop. These guys should've been bigger in the States.
Interesting sound.
Very interesting. Some instrument, far our tracks and some a little more broad.
Doves best album. Only prevented from getting 5 stars by the absence of The Cedar Room, their best song (on previous album, Lost Souls). Contains some total classics like Words, Pounding and Caught by the River.
The word I keep coming up with is "almost." This album wants so desperately to be an epic, atmospheric magnum opus, but it's...not quite that. Hell of a try, though. Best track: Satellites
Wow - never heard of this band before but really liked this record. Like an early 2000s version of Echo & the Bunnymen
3/5
Safe indie rock. Low 3
Average Brit indie from early 00’s
A fish in the sea of early naughties indie, but set apart by the melancholic shoegaze. Listening again, I feel I should have enjoyed this more than I did.
Wait, so you’re telling me this isn’t Coldplay?
Hmm... Okay. I like the base of this, the shoegaze sort of thing, the alt/ chill of it... but it suffers from a kind of different kind of sameness than say the same riff or the same vocals, that is not the sameness I mean... it is more like a song starts off with a rhythm and beat and it goes till it is done. There are not enough crests and valleys, peaks and depths... Thus the sameness effect I speak of. I DO like it at its core, I did not get bored like I do with the other kind of sameness, but it was always low key. It is good study music or background, but it doesn't excite the soul too often or too much...
Just had Ride’s Nowhere. Now this. Not sure? I realize there’s a pretty heavy British bias on this list. Which, I have decided to embrace. Not my country. But often my music. So, why not? Do realize form reading through others reviews that if the US indie from this period got equal treatment people wouldn’t be any happier. But the book’s going strong with Doves and not giving us any Modest Mouse or Built to Spill. No Microphones. No Death Cab for Cutie. No Yo La Tengo. Maybe it’s MY bias, but I would rather listen to any of the above over this. Though… I will admit: Friday’s Dust gripped me. Thought it had an oboe. Found out it was a mellotron! Pretty awesome. Yeah. I am glad I listened to this. Not sure I would recommend it to anyone or make any claims about anyone ever NEEDING to hear it. But… ok. 3 Boolean: ————-
3/5 - A number of the tracks seem to be influenced by Coldplay in the vocalizations and general rock vibe. This is likely the fact that they are both based out of the UK around the same time. Overall I'd say the album is good but not great. I wouldn't be offended if this ends up in rotation and I can see growing to like more of the tracks.
This is very OK. There's some good songs on here but a majority of this just felt like stuff I've already heard before by bands who do this sound a lot better.
hey look, another unremarkable indie rock record. i don't dislike this, but i am a little perplexed at why this is on here
solid pop album, but not really quirky enough to keep me interested
Pretty nice.
New to me enjoyed it a lot
Al
Working-in-the-garage-with-dad music
Lol. I was just listening to Sub sub - full fathom five album yesterday and I thought about this band becoming Doves. I didint like it as much as I wanted. I prefer them as Sub Sub
Initially something in between oasis and the stills but it became more distinct and interesting deeper into the album.
5/10
Pretty
Could listen. Again.
I didn't know of this album previously. I liked it more than I thought I would. Decent, not great. Like the vibe, good song writing.
Nothing stood out. In fact, it's so unobtrusive I never really noticed when one song ended & the next began. I probably won't remember I ever listened to it.
I really thought the other Doves album was an unnecessary addition to the list, and this one isn't really doing anything to convince me otherwise. Just sounds like brit pop with a little more folk and atmospherics at times. N.Y. is an aggressive OK Computer era Radiohead rip (sounds good though).
The clean, arpeggiated guitar had me anticipating an emo-adjacent sound, but that’s as close as it gets. As the tracks linger, they evoke more of a Mogwai-like, post-rock quality. As the album develops, it even leans into an aesthetic which could be described as post-Britpop. In this sense it keeps its pop rock core and borrows from other genres and defines its own sound without plagiarising. There is a definite maturity here which is both experienced and reserved, which can leave you satisfied yet wanting more. The album is defined by large, atmospheric soundscapes that range from gentle, near-ambient passages to loud, immersive walls of sound. It is all incredibly moody, with the softness of the vocals providing an accessible anchor against the underlying tension of the music. Compared to other bands from that era, this remains a pleasant and rewarding listen. Personally, I would have liked more excitement and novelty rather than this degree of navel-gazing introspection, but that clearly wasn't the band’s objective. Evaluated on its own merits and goals, this is a solid 3/5.
Decent.
Bonus points for Moonchild cover, aswell as some more experimental, more interesting tracks. But still, as a whole, not that interesting. It was cool. It's a stronger 3.
When to listen: Background rock? This album didn't really speak to me, but I liked the last two songs (The Sulphur Man and Caught By The River) Album just felt.. generic.
I warned to this one a lot. I gave it two listens. I approached it quite pessimistically because of a lot of 00s British indie and rock that I didn't enjoy from the list so far. I enjoy Elbow and a lot of this seems like a big precedent for their music, which must have began at a similar time. A high 3.
The Last Broadcast constantly felt like it was trying to get somewhere, but ultimately ends up nowhere. Every song has an element that feels interesting but it isn't really capitalised on, the song just drones on. This specific form of indie music is pretty common from the early 2000s, and whilst I don't mind some songs from the genre of slow sad but oddly experimental indie, it does feel a bit irritating a lot of the time. It's the music equivalent of being edged with no ending in sight.
It's a bit forgettable and in places a tad annoying, too. But it's not bad.
this was decent but loses points for too many coldplay-esque moments
It’s ok. Kinda generic indie rock
I like some of these songs, but overall there were so many places there was just “noise” and it was annoying. I’d be calmly listening to something I liked and then a new song would start with the sound of banging pots. Still, I added 4 songs to my “liked” songs.
Musik, hvor man tænker: "Please, ikke hav en forfærdelig vokal, please ikke hav en forfærdelig vokal", inden forsangeren kommer på. Introen slutter, og frygten bekræftes. Andet nummer er bedre. "Friday's dust" giver mig seriøse System of a Down "Lonely day"-vibes Et review har skrevet noget i stil med: "701 albums, man skal høre før man dør... og 300 assorterede britiske albums". Set i bakspejlet rammer det plet ift. Robbie Williams.
some decent moments otherwise mid
I like this (and bought it on release), but I like it less than Lost Souls.
this is all over the place, but I kinda liked it.
Not bad. Very easy listen.
Like many of the albums on this list: it's not offensive to hear, but I'm baffled by its inclusion here.
Es un disco bien grabado pero que no alcanza la excelencia. Falta alma.
***A good easy listening album
This album is good overall and has a couple exceedingly pleasant tracks on it. I had this album back when it was released, but I liked it more back then than I do now. This list’s UK bias is showing again, because in my opinion Doves don’t deserve more than one album on this list. I remember reading a review of one of their albums 25-ish years ago where the reviewer dismissively referred to Doves as “music for Gen X-ers to swiffer their apartments to” or something like that. Maybe too harsh, maybe unfair.
Fine, nothing exciting.
It was OK. Very similar to a bunch of albums we’ve had already.
Even before appearing on this list I had tried getting into Doves music. I’m a big fan of Elbow so thought they would be similar. Whilst others on here say they sound the same as Elbow or Coldplay even, I’ve never got the perceived similarities. So and album and band which will remain a mystery to me despite their good musicianship. 3/5 16/5/26
Coldplay-ish. Light.
뭐라 쓰지
Ihan ok indie rokkia, mut ei nyt mitään erikoista. Innostuin välisoittojen kohdalla enemmän kuin oikeitten kappaleitten. Hyvän tunnelmallista mutta ei hirveesti lähtenyt. Parhaat: Last Broadcast, M62 Song
Alternative rock with a lot of slow singing and spacey echoes. Right down my alley but it didn’t grab me as much as I wanted it to.
It's pleasant enough, arguably to a fault. It hasn't really held up all that well, it's kind of one-note and seems much weaker and less varied than their debut. Something about the singers voice on this one just oozes genericness and lack of genuine emotion, which just drags it down. The only song that really deviates from the formula is the King Crimson Moonchild adaptation.
Me gustó, me guardé un par de músicas. Me puse a pensar que es un flash que te reconozcan como uno de los álbumes que tenés que escuchar antes de morir y que se haya creado en 2001 y esté compitiendo con música tan buena y “vieja”.
coldplay at home (still good tho)
You cant give me a Doves album right after i reviewed a Doves album. It’s marginally more engaging than the last one. Otherwise it is in a group of britpop bands that havent moved far from Phil Psectre in terms of innovation - get a lit of strings, mash the sound togther. Let it kind of wash through you.
This is very very very very very alright. There are many moments where it starts to move in a cool and interesting direction and then reverts to a very alright big drunken festival singalong anthem chorus
this was pretty cool. didn’t feel crazy about it but liked it a lot
reading the keywords from reviews is also fun, but I like today's because of the variety. my favorites, listed in order of appearance: "coldplay", "radiohead", "generic", "meh" realistically, i guess i don't hate british people today. this was kind of interesting! i might revisit this album again in the future. i guess i see the coldplay connections (I see fewer Radiohead connections, to be sure, outside of "M62 Song"), but i don't know how fair it is to compare the less popular indie bands to their larger, more popular influences (he says sincerely, having done exactly that more than once in the past).
As others have mentioned, got Coldplay vibes from this, almost U2 at some points? I thought it was good if not super memorable. 3-3.5
I enjoyed this quite a bit. Like a surprising amount and certainly more than this rating suggests, but I can’t get over the idea that it mostly just sounds like other things I like more — I need to let it sit on its own for a while and revisit to see if it stands on its own merits. One interesting thing that stands out to me — early negative Coldplay reviews always called them a Radiohead rip off and I absolutely disagree with that characterization, but this album very much felt to me like a cross between Coldplay and Radiohead. I’m into it, I think.
The forgotten Coldplay, can’t say it’s a “must listen” but I liked it
I wish I liked this, I really do. Something’s just missing for me. I didn’t hate, I just didn’t love it
I feel like this is *so close* to being good music. Like, push just that little bit further into melancholy town, do more than five seconds of experimental fuzz and you’ll having something good on your hands. Sadly though this is just slightly better Coldplay
Let's start with the positives: Doves isn't the worst Radiohead-inspired band. This should be my kind of music but I didn't care for Doves back then and I don't especially care for them now, although when I'm listening to the album I find that I like most of the songs. The problem is that after the album ended, I realized that it didn't leave any emotional mark. I don't think I'll feel the need to listen to this again.
My second Doves album after Lost Souls and while I preferred this one, it isn’t an album that’s going to live long in the memory. My main criticism is with two songs, Words and There Goes The Fear. Is was really enjoying both up to a point but they kept going on and on and on. There’s no need for TGTF to be nearly 7 minutes long. Top Track - Pounding
I feel like I should really like this but the songs didn’t connect with me. Could be the one listen only problem. Sounded pretty cool though.
Some songs really hit but others not so much… Decent album though and I liked listening to it.
This feels ahead of it's time given when it was released. Can hear the next 20 years of indie/pop music from this album. I quite liked There Goes The Fear, N.Y., Satellites, Caught by the River. Pounding gave Coldplay vibes. Overall I enjoyed listening to this album more than I thought I would. Not enough to listen again however.
I liked some songs but its kinda cringey idk
I like the darker tones, when it feels haunting. I liked most of it, although some of the more pop ones were annoying.
Rv
pretty nice! super pretty soundscapes, dreamy atmospheres, flows really well. Does start to drag a bit but is never an unpleasant listen.
What if Coldplay but not Coldplay
The three singles are excellent, but the remainder isn't really anything special.
Solid 2000s indie. Nothing special though.
5.5/10
good for chilling
decently enjoyable. not my normal music but fine
vibes of the stone roses
Bleh..
No private session used for Spotify. I was excited for a Doves album as I used to listen to one of their albums a lot. This wasn't that album. Maybe it's nostalgia but I don't know why this album was picked. It's not bad, would be better if it was not so mellow/later Coldplay popish, like some of the songs seemed like they wanted to take off and rock, but opted for blandness and more mass appeal.
This is a band that I like, even though it kinda sounds like everything I don't really like. For some reason Doves is different. It still isn't the best thing, but I enjoy it pretty much.
We don't talk enough about the high-floor/low-ceiling bands—always good, sometimes great. Alkaline Trio. Metric. Great to have around, a few absolute bangers, but if they're you're absolute favorite band... why? There's better, more interesting stuff in their respective genres. This is harder to pin down when an artist is more ambitious, but I think Doves fall into this camp. They have moments of transcendence, but rarely reach the rafters. This makes it tough to justify two whole albums on this list with all its glaring omissions (seriously, no Slowdive?) But if you like Laser Guided Melodies or The Bends, this is a great add to your shelf. 3.5/5. Shoutout to the (500) Days of Summer soundtrack for introducing me to indie bops like "There Goes the Fear."
3.9
I will want to listen to this again!
The Doves sounded like the store brand version of Coldplay.
Repetitious, but fine.
Kinda boring but not bad in any way. Its too slow and relaxing gor my taste but ain't nothing wrong with it. Goes down smooth but not that interesting either. Not my thing but I see the value in it. 👌
Interesting Brit pop - not much stands out though
Had never heard the band or album. I enjoy it
meh. Kinda milquetoast British indie rock. I get the sense they tried to make it feel more grandiose than it is. Overall its okay, its moody in all the right places, but it doesnt really set itself apart too much from their peers.
Basically sounded like a less good Elbow album
I like the songs that sound like Spiritualized - I like less the songs that sound like Elbow
The Good: We are warned this is the last… The Bad: What if we want more? The Ugly: When you realize you never wanted some in the first place… Never heard of this band before… and though they sound alright, I am not impressed. Maybe I am getting tired of all these albums? Maybe I am getting numb to things I am un-familiar, as well as familiar with… I don’t know. I am happy this was the last broadcast… that’s for certain. I am going to go and listen to an album that I had to listen to in the future, as I am playing catch-up on rating albums… here’s to the Jesus & Mary Chain at least peaking my interest more than these Doves… A flat 3… could’ve been downgraded, but they are not that bad...
We are firmly in the echelons of the Lesser Britpop Diaspora here - not at all a bad place to be but there's no reason to include this on the list over, say, *Word Gets Around* or *Comfort in Sound*. That said, it does plenty of things well - "N.Y." would fit right in on *Urban Hymns*, for example, and "Satellite" is a warm slice of turn-of-the-millennium wistfulness. But there weren't quite enough lyrics that really grabbed me to bump this up any higher (although "in and out of love and institutions" is a bar).
First half all sounds the same, they turn overdrive on for NY, sounds the same just with OD
