Even better than I remembered, brilliant.
If you only buy 1 Scott Walker recording then this is it. Worth it for the bass line in the 'Old man's back' alone
Its ok, pop and a little lightweight but they did ok on it so good for them
Great album, totally immersive listening
Gimme some truth is good and obviously imagine and jealous guy are big songs but not moved by rest of it.
Tina and Chris really stand out on this album
Enjoyed it, tripped out late 60s isnt an easy listen but its fun
The kind of 1st album where afterwards the band splits and goes onto better things
Not for me but the band can play
Arty pop is my best discription. Very good in places
Music is good but he cannot sing
Hasnt aged well, Billies voice sounds rough and I dont think it pairs with the style of music. But hey thats just me so 3 stars just because its Billie Holiday
Great album, captured the band really well. Prefer this to the studio albums
Sounds older than it is but I quite liked it.
If Carlsberg made Christmas albums then they'd be hard pressed to beat this one. 5 Stars all the way
For me it's the production values that save this record. Some outstanding tracks but also some filler. The Everley brothers cover shows they had run out of material and ideas
You just know that many UK Punk bands must have heard this and took its energy.
Dross, must be a generational thing
If indie did prog rock then this is it, self indulgent with nothing for the mob. I imagine a lot of critics will love it for that but for me it's an album you are supposed to like and you end up clinging to snippets of excellence.
OK some dodgy lyrics but really enjoyed this album, some great music
Great album, as soon as it finished I put it straight back on
Can't believe I missed this 1st time around, fantastic album.
Yesterday I had Maxinquaye by Tricky, it's hard to grasp that both albums were from the same year. This one is empty, devoid of originality and sounds very old
Good album, a genius at work
Following Rattle and Hum was always to be difficult but this album is almost a different band. Thoroughly enjoyed this classic
Not one for me, it became wall paper music after a while, probably better suited to a Starsky and Hutch episode
The band thought this album was sub par, they were right. Just shows what an inflated ego and cocaine will produce. Utter tripe
The only acceptable metal band, love it
Excellent album, I havent listened to much Grime but really enjoyed this.
There are good moments, for me their day had passed and the reinvention seems superficial
There are a couple of gems on here but too many instrumentals plus a guest appearance from Everything but the Girl (who I do like) push this album down to a 3 for me
Great album, even though I find Axl a bit shrill I can see why this was a huge album
A fledgling band playing and exploring sound. Not one I enjoyed. Maybe you had to be there
I can hear the musicality but not one for me, a little bored to be honest
Is it good, yes. Do I want to buy it, no. So a 3 for me
Owes as much to Arthur Baker as it does to Afrika. Hip hop from the dawn of time
Truelly a great album, it's hard to think of a better one
Music to match a pc screen saver. It literally does sound like a teenager in his bedroom
These days it sounds like an old movie sound track but I imagine in 56 these was top notch stuff with swing, jazz and a great band
Watch out Frank, Elvis is coming and its all about to change
It's a bit of a nerds album and I can see them playing Dungeons and Dragons afterwards, or maybe they've been to a Glastonbury gift shop and loved the vibe
All the nonsense aside it's a solid album
Obviously heard of them but hadn't heard much by them, really good
Not an artist I enjoy listening to. I see others really rate this artist but for me it's a miss
Throwback soulful music with a rapper whose style and lyric have impressed.
Great album, Tina wiped the floor with this one. Would have been a straight 5 but the Beatles and Bowie covers smack a little of lack of confidence. Saying that I prefer Tinas version of help
As debut albums go this takes some beating but I'm biased, aged 13 with money from my paper round this is the 1st album I ever bought. Still play it and play it loud!
Love it
Actually much better than I remember it.
I never cared for 'something for the weekend' so wasn't looking forward to this album but boy was I wrong brilliant album, witty, wry, and who doesn't love brass. 5⭐ from me
I still don't care for something for the weekend!
It's a product of it's time line where Jazz was being used in Rock and this gives a funky feel to this album. To it's credit it's expertly crafted with top session players and the production is top notch
But overall it's devoid of emotion that leaves me cold. Not a band I'd want to hear again
Whatever I was doing on 2005 I totally missed this. Utterly brilliant LP and only the second time I've gone out and bought an album based on this aps suggestion.
Thank you 1001
Not one I'd listen to again
Is it good, yes. Would I buy it, no. 3
Not one I'd listen to again. Pleasant enough but did nothing for me
Sometimes Bryne feel very indulged. But Heaven is one of their absolute best and I loved the seldom seen heavyiness of Memories.
Stunning album, took me a couple of listens to appreciate it but then Spotify listed a live version and it blows the doors off showing what a band they were
It's 1956 and the American teenager has been presented with a heady mix of rockabilly rebel and slushy ballad. Coupled together with a banging cover and you're on the way
Ol Parker knew what he was doing
Rated for its historical significance and for opening ears to the original artists
Praised for it song writing but for me it's lost the bravado of Rum, Sodomy and the lash. I found it a bit samey, all right for a night at the pub but that's about it
Hard to listen to, maybe you had to be there and tripping.
Not a style of Jazz I enjoy, post bop, free jazz, are technically brilliant but not for me
Enjoyable enough, competent band who I'm sure in 1956 would have the room jumping
Enjoyed it, which was a surprise after reading some of the reviews. It's a great example of capturing a bands live essence.
The spoken conversations don't work but there is still enough to make this a good album. But would I buy it full price? no but I'd pick it up second hand.
Great cover photo
50s albums suffer in comparison to the production values of later records but there's no denying the influence Little Richard had on the world. This album jumps off the disc and into the room. Fantastic
A bit heavy on the saccharine for me. No denying there is talent but it's cloying
Decent enough for a first album but it's not a knockout
Irritating. And that's from someone who has a couple of Suede records from back in the day!
Judging this album alone without comparison to what came before or after it's still a 5
I'm one of those who has listened to Neil Young and failed to see the attraction... Until this, listened once, intrigued, twice loved it, third time blasted it out
His passion comes pouring out of him as he steps a different path to consumerism and greed.
Keep rocking the free world Neil. 5⭐
I know Sarah Vaughan is a significant artist in the Jazz world but this album does nothing for me.
A 4 dragged down by one of the worst album cover photos. Respect to Mike Love at the back for having nothing to do with the Goats
Quite why this made the list is beyond me. Let's all go to Ibiza, look at the sunset and listen to some beats
I think Blitzkrieg pop is apt for this band, it's for those who like their punk without an ounce of aggression. If it was toss up between these and the Shrang-ri-las for the most punk outfit then I think the girls win it.
2 stars as its a great cover
Nothing outstanding or remarkable, it's another in the 1001 albums that you wonder why it's included
Great voice and commendable for his song writing. Some of the production is of it's time especially on 1st listen but the talent surfaces above this and the album is a positive experience
For gods sake Paul, give Art a call!
Boy in the bubble is spot on, no amount of explaining exonerates the classlessness of this work
Apartheid aside, I find the work mixes and merges musical styles well but leaves an empty feeling, and an unease that feels like somebody trampled all over your mother's best linen.
2 for me
The temps start with a answer to the direction taken by Marvin, but it's all a bit full on. Luckily they resort to type after the horror of Runaway Child spoken part and Grapevine filler
Remarkable album and an absolute wall of sound. Described as experimental and it's not wrong. Human Cannonball proves they can knock out a good classic, it's just they choose not too
Loved it
Accusations and a threatened court case brought this lot to a halt, shame really as I loved this noise
5 from me
The West Midlands had it nailed in the late 60s, so much music pouring out
Everyone but the drummer had the right idea, leave!
Talk of filler is nonsense, I found side 2 perhaps more appealing as it's without the big walloppers on side 1. As debut albums go it's very good
Imagine its 1958 and you are sitting at a table in a Cuban club watching a band playing. The band are good, the atmosphere is hot and people are dancing but you leave as its nothing you haven't heard before.
30 years later you wander into the same bar and the band are still playing, only this time everyone is wildly applauding them, you drink your drink, listen politely and bid the bar staff goodnight.
As you walk out the music makes you remember 1958, and you reflect on what isolation does to a country, frozen in aspic with nothing moved on
Still the band were fairly decent
Ride made great snowboards. My all time favourite was the Timeless, a beast of a board that you had to be in control of or it would hurt you.
Retired to my loft it sits there longing to be let loose, its not interested in tricks and jumps and only wants to carve and go very, very fast
Ride the band are not in this catagory, Nowhere is good and the band can play but it needs volume to be heard at its best. A stronger singer would have taken this band off piste and into the deep stuff
Conclusion: The Ride Timeless is in the 1001 Snowboards you must try before you die. Nowhere isnt
I bought this but it's telling that it never gets selected for a replay, it's very good and well produced but there's something melancholic about it that's slightly depressing. Still a good album and I don't feel absorbed by it
Her 8th album in 4 years and it doesn't disappoint, the musicianship is superb and her songwriting is getting stronger. 4⭐ for me
