Who doesn't love Sweet Dreams? Fantastic song. And I don't think I've ever heard this whole album so I'm excited to change that today. Seems like a good day for some 80s electro new wave. Annie Lennox can really sing, that's for sure. What a great voice she has. This album is really fun. It's not a style I typically enjoy but it is a really great album and I liked listening to it a lot today. I think Sweet Dreams is clearly the standout but there are some other great songs here as well. Jennifer is great, I've Got An Angel is great. I had actually heard more of this than I thought but not all in one sitting. This is a great example of some of the good things that 80s electro pop had to offer and I would probably pick this up if I saw it at the record shop. 4/5
The singles are great, there are some interesting tracks, but also a bit of filler.
I enjoy Annie Lennox but had only ever heard the hits. Wow. So much more going on here than I thought. I’d had expected a New Wave nostalgia trip but was unexpectedly moved at so many moments. It may be up there with Songs from the Big Chair for me now.
Had this on second list
Front loaded sumptuous synth pop
Second album on my list that I have never heard before, but have given a five star. Hope to get another one of these guys soon!
A classic. The synths seem dated but Annie's voice is timeless.
The heavy synth use doesn’t hold up well but the songwriting and vocals do.
𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗜𝘀 𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 and 𝗦𝘄𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗗𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀 (𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀) are two fantastic singles, combining hypnotic synthesizers, irresistible hooks, and Annie Lennox’s unmistakable voice. If the rest of the album maintained that standard, I’d have very little to complain about. Unfortunately, it doesn’t. The remaining tracks have the same electronic ingredients, but rarely the melodies or personality to make them stand out. I don’t dislike what I’m hearing; I just find myself waiting for something as memorable as those two hits to come along again. A perfectly decent early-80s synth-pop album, but one where the highlights are considerably more interesting than the album surrounding them. Sometimes a great singles collection might be all you need.
Vocals amazing, obviously. But too many weaker tracks to be a great album. It dissolved into background listening too easily, and only occasionally got my attention back. Sweet Dreams obviously great, and a couple other tracks I like, but disappointing as an album.
This is an album and band that passed me by as a youngster - I was much too teenage boy to appreciate Annie Lennox & Dave Stewart. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this album. As others have said it is not perfect but it is very good
As a whole it’s fine. Nothing can live up to that standout.
Not bad - cant believe that song is from 1983- 3.3
Annie Lennox is a legend. Usually not a fan of the genre but this is a good album. 3.5/5. Raising to 4.
Brilliant album! 😁 Five stars…
Good. Sweet dreams of overplayed but album is great
2 out of 5. Not a very exciting album here.
Annie Lennox could sing the phone book and I’d be delighted. But the repetition occasionally feels like I’ve fallen asleep with my forehead on a synthesizer.
Great New Wave record. Annie Lennox's vocals are phenomenal; the way she layers together harmonies as well as simple melodies is just perfect. The synthesizer work is also top notch stuff, very good for mopping to. A problem with a lot of the keyboard driven New Wave albums is their tendency to loop the riffs way too long and stretching songs past beyond their engagement level, but every single song on this record is the perfect length. When it comes to songwriting however, Eurythmics tends to lack creativity, with few chord changes at all and tend to stay very static in terms of song structure. It mostly wasn't a boring album and it definitely kept me engaged, but something felt strange about it that wasn't positive. It was a net positive listen, but I really don't like the title track. Very high 3
The one song is good, the rest are yuck. Favourite Track(s): Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) Least Favourite Track(s): Jennifer
Nothing great
Pretty darn impressed
ну типа норм, хз, свит дримс уже только негативные эмоции вызывает.
Sweet dreams!
A fanrtastic album
En del riktigt bra låtar men även lite utfyllnad. Som vanligt bra sång av Annie Lennox. 3,5 av 5.
This album was different than I expected, and I don't know why. I thought it would he a bit more poppy but it wasn't, in a good way. No track other than sweet dreams jumped out at me but overall it was a pretty enjoyable listen.
What I would like/think of out of an album from the 80s
Had some really good songs some were just ok
Synth dance new wave pop. Interesting in parts, but never was my thing.
Not so sweet
the warm and soothing tones of the synths mixed with driving 80s drums create a full musical experience while the soaring female vocals really fill out the space and make it feel inspiring and epic while still feeling timeless.
ended up having sex to it so 10 out of 10
Couple good songs
How did I not know this was Annie Lennox? What a thrill. This is wildly good. Recently watched David Bowie watching Annie do Freddie Mercury in awe, so I’m a bit primed for awe.
Some very cool hits, the rest is okay. 3.5 stars
I think "Sweet Dreams" and "Love is a Stranger" are pretty great, but it's a pretty steep drop off after that. Going with a high 3 stars.
They’re taking the Euryth-mickey a little bit with this one. Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) the single is definitely an outright banging bit of synthpop that made Arnie Lennox one of the most well known pop stars of the 80s but the album itself is nothing too special. Quite snoozy even. Wrap It Up features the talents of Green Gartside ie Mr Scritti Politti but it’s not a top drawer performance from him. He did appear on a much better 80s soul cover I Just Wanna Be Loved by Elvis Costello.
Just as I remember it, great synth
The singles were good. The rest was... ok
Day1006 - annie lennox is an icon and the staying power of the sweet dreams song is kinda crazy to me
There's a classic song, but defintely is not my type of music
From Einstürzende Neubauten to the Eurythmics a small step in this list a giant leap in music. From deconstructed music to perfectly assembled songs which make an typical 80's record. A couple of hits (Love is a Stranger, Sweet Dreams), but the rest is more interesting. Especially the second half of the record, where the song durations are a bit longer, the real skills of Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart come forward. Really enjoyable listening session.
Pretty freakin cold. Kinda sounds like the music they'll play on the way to hell. Iconic riff on Sweet Dreams though. bump bump bump bump BUMP BUMP bump bump bump bump bump bump BUMP BUMP bump bump.
Above average computer music. Dated in parts but others still bang. Sweet dreams rocks as does the Lou reed cover. Still a ceiling to me on computer music
Favorite Song: Wrap It Up Least Favorite: This Is the House
I mean the name of this album is literally the only song worth anything
I mean it's okay, but very very samey
It is enjoyable, but I would only return for the main single
Well the two singles from this album that I know (Love Is A Stranger & Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)) are great tracks. But overall the other songs on the album are even better. Really really liked this album. I was surprised in a pleasant way! So: 4/5
por la canción maravillosa que tiene, SE ACEPTA.
Perfectly captures the vibe of the early 80’s, but the title track clearly stands out as the best this album has to offer.
It sounds about like you’d expect it to
Pretty bland given the reputation of the hit single.
Elite level synth pop production with one of the greatest singers ever. What's not to love?
Good ol school album, with a classic hit never were my favorite band but they were alright
I'm sure this was more amazing and innovative in 1983. The title track will always be a banger.
Danced between a 3 and a 4. Second half kept it at a 4.
Jennifer and Sweet Dreams are good, but not enough else grabs me
I like the general ambiance Eurythmics creates but I prefer my Synthpop with a bit more pop. It's a shame I don’t vibe with them more because I can hear the clear influence they’ve had on my beloved LCD Soundsystem. The Human League is definitely more to my tastes, leaning into the big, bold, “punch the air” moments, rather than ghostly ambient leanings.
Solid 3 on Eurythmics for me, i'm not a fan of synth pop but i like the moments it feels like a dancefloor record and the big single is impecable
Prior to hearing this album I knew nothing about the Eurythmics outside of whatever hits MTV/radio played. I like Annie Lennox's voice. The song "Wrap It Up" was truly awful but to be fair, I didn't really like the song when the Fabulous Thunderbirds had a hit with it either. This was OK.
Forgot about the period of my life when Sweet Dreams was literally everywhere
I needed some 80s synth pop
Previously known. Two outstanding songs and the rest is ok.
I didn’t think I’d enjoy this but I’m really quite impressed with it. I love the baselines, Jennifer and in the City are tops for me. Not a fan of the song wrap it up. 3.1.
Sweet Dreams (the song) is a classic, but the rest of the album just wasn't able to hit the highs of that song.
Sweet dreams and some other songs
I think most people love sweet dreams. Who knew it was from such a mediocre album! None of the other songs are memorable or worth returning to. Overly simplistic, heavy on 0roduction but empty on songwriting.
6/10 Title track is an absolute banger. The rest of the album was a major disappointment if Im honest. Highlights: Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)
Cool synths but feels kinda soulless
Wasn't particularly a fan of Eurythmics and their brand of pop back in the late 80s and early 90s when I regular encountered them on the radio and TV music shows but over time I'd softened to the singles that continue to be played to this day. So I found this enjoyable, it's pop but it has some edge to it and Annie Lennox has a fantastic voice. It's not something I'm sudden;y going to be putting into rotation and I doubt I'll listen to it again but wouldn't object to doing so. Sweet Dreams is great but I've probably heard it too much. Wrap It Up is a Sam and Dave cover of which I love the original and this is a decent cover.
As decent as you could reasonably expect 80s synthpop to be.
3,5/5
"Love is a stranger" und "Sweet dreams" sind bekannte songs. Das ganze Album ist hörenswert. 4/5
Synthesized nostalgia.
Gives Kate Bush
Holds up well 40+ years later. Lennox’s voice is singular is both range and power. Eurythmics music is instantly recognizable.
Only familiar with the single, but the rest was decent.
Did not hold up as well as I thought it would.
This is not really for me, but I do respect it. I just have no real connection to this type of music. Sweet Dreams is an undeniable banger though. 2/5
Sweet Dreams is a banger. I think Somebody Told Me might even be better. Shortish album.
the second album release by british synthpop giants eurythmics, this record being the one that has the title track on the album name, as well as a few other big chart-toppers throughout. the two members took time to isolate themselves with synths and 8-track mixing. the album, while initially a bit of a flop eventually turned around, partly due to the success of sweet dream's music video, which aired on MTV. eurythmics' pop sound is very ethereal and celestial, with big, mildly ominous basslines, sharp analog strings, quirky accents and most notably, very beautiful and melodramatic vocal performances from vocalist annie lennox. like the time i listened to the human league, this too is another four-star overall synthpop album. there's some hits in here (especially the ones that people talk about less), there's some gems, but it's missing that special bit of shimmer and impact that some other synthpop records have. it has much better b-sides compared to that other album though, these guys have a lot of talent and i can only praise them the more i actively listen to some of their other records. this album sounds like the color gold.
This is fantastic. This is a mix of things that I generally get annoyed of quickly, but in this case, it made a perfect mix of something wonderful. The synths, the lyrics, the dance beats. Its all really put together and fun to let loose on. I had a blast with this one.
Sounds great for an 80's album... But not quite gold.
Great synth pop album. Lennox’s vocals with Stewart’s mechanical sounding music provided a great combination.
Perfectly good 80s pop music. It was interesting hearing some of the lesser known songs on here. Wouldn’t be something I would return to though.
Solid 80's new wave. There's not a wasted note here, everything is tight and rich and minimal. The hits are here, and the rest of it feels like a proper vehicle to propel Annie Lennox into your head. No sleepers. My Rating: 4/5
Pretty standard early 1980s synthpop. A couple of good songs but this isn't distinct enough to warrant an inclusion.
Love Is a Stranger Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)
id give it a four but that cringey spanish song ruined it all…
D:
Not even Sweet Dreams can save this album, the synths sound dated, the musical ideas repeat ad infinitum through songs that rwallycould have just been emails. Annie Lennox is still an icon though.
i actively became less of an annie lennox fan as this album progressed
I really really like 1 song and the rest is kinda whatever. A very three album besides the title track which is fucking dope, so that’s where I’ll stick this.
If anyone sees me listing to the album again, please file an identity fraud case.
If I'd heard the rest of the album as a kid - and not just the title track - I probably wouldn't have been as traumatized by it. As the rest of the album was pretty good and the Eurythmics sound applied to non-traumatizing lyrics does really cool and interesting things. 3.5 stars, rounded up.
Really good album, not totally up on eurhythmics but did like this
I kind of like Yaz better but this is good.
Once you move on from the desire to think this music is a joke you’ll come to realise this music bangs
