Süße Träume werden mit diesem Album gemacht.
Love me some Annie Lennox, so I definitely groove with this. Solid 5 Stars.
I’m at a 4.5 that I’ll bump up to a 5. This is my first time properly listening to a Eurythmics album, and while everyone on the planet knows the title track, I’m surprised that some of the other ones on here weren’t big hits too; “Love Is a Stranger” is a really solid opener that has some catchy vocal structures, & “Wrap It Up” is energetic as hell, feeling like a direct precursor to stuff like Pump Up The Jam or Get Ready for This. Annie Lennox’s vocals, which I only really know from the title track and her other all-timer in “Walking on Broken Glass”, really shine here, and capture the mood of each track nicely. If she was the primary songwriter on a lot of these, then she knows how to make a pretty solid chorus / hook too. This is obviously an extremely synth-driven album, which is sort of expected, but I was more surprised at how effectively some of the traditional instruments blended into these soundscapes, namely in the guitar, horns, & piano scattered throughout the album. They’re only used lightly, to compliment the lead synth melodies, but their presence feels important every time, so it works really well. This album also never really strays too far from its core of R&B / pop, which keeps everything just grounded enough to not feel overly futuristic or digital like a Kraftwerk album, or too reliant & gimmicky, ala “Temporary Secretary” (please don’t come at me, I don’t hate that song, but it *does* feel a bit gimmicky). Everything works together in a pretty strong harmony, and even though each track shares a general core of instruments, they all still feel decently distinct enough to not feel boring or homogeneous. I feel like this did pave the way for more experimental synth work over time, and there’s probably the earliest hints of Dubstep & EDM in here; maybe not in the most innovative or forward-thinking way, but with just enough of a spark to get the ball rolling. Honestly, it’s only at a 4.5 instead of a flat 5 because everything after “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” sort of felt like it was padding for time; they’re not bad tracks, but they all go about 2 times as long as they need to, even if they’re filled up decently well. “This City Never Sleeps” was pretty effective, but again, could’ve been like, 4 or 5 minutes instead of 7. However, I liked it too damn much to not bump it up – it’s a breezy 42 minutes, it’s a really good album, and it does honestly hold up. At worst, it’s a 3 if the more “boring” parts of the album nag at you that badly.
Marvelous!
What a wonderfully weird sound the Eurythmics have. I had of course heard Sweet Dreams before, but never listened to the whole album. But the whole thing is really well done. Weirdly Sweet Dreams was one of my least favourite songs from the album.

5/5 - way fun
hell yes. rounding up to a 5 - there were a few songs that dragged for me but overall, a very enjoyable treat of a listen!
Да, это хорошая музыка Дим
Damn good album. For me it didn’t really have any weak tracks. Wow, This Is The House really is a Talking Heads track, isn’t it?
I know Eurythmics from their hit songs, but have never actually listened to a full album before. This is a good album. It seems a bit of a let down on first listen when you go in expecting the strength of the title track throughout, but it really grows on you with subsequent listens. Normally I would rate this a 4, but I was a child in the 80's. It's hard to imagine now but when Sweet Dreams hit the airwaves there was nothing like it. Adding to that was the video with Annie looking and acting androgynous, which was shocking at the time. I would love to know how many people found the image of of a suited Annie smacking the pointer into her gloved hand a gateway to bdsm lol. This is a band that carved their own path, echos of which can still be heard in music today. It's because of that that I'm bumping this up to a 5.
Honestly, probably the biggest surprise. I love "Sweet Dreams" but didn't realize the rest of this album is also pretty fucking solid. Sooo...80s. Weird at times (like the sax in The Walk) but it all seems to work so well. That hook in the song Sweet Dreams is absolutely incredible.
Damn. This list has so far only really subjected us to the dregs of British new wave, so I didn’t expect much from this album beyond the title track, but this album is super good. It’s moody and mysterious and cool and goes a lot of interesting places. It was interesting to me that Annie Lennox — at least in my mind and I think more broadly this is also true — is associated with the deeper voice she employs on their more well-known songs including “Sweet Dreams”, but on many tracks on this album she sings with a lovely softer voice in a higher register, like the opening “Love is a Stranger”. That song also has an awesome synth track and is just all-around exceptional. “I Could Give You” and “Jennifer” also stand out. When “This is the House” started, I had to check to make sure the album hadn’t ended and something else started playing - it was a pleasant surprise leading in to a really fun track. The closer, “This City Never Sleeps”, is an ultra-cool exercise in restraint and slow burns. I enjoyed this a lot and would/will definitely listen again. I’m torn between 4 ⭐️ and 5 ⭐️ because “I’ve Got An Angel” and “Wrap It Up” are kind of duds for me, but I think the good parts of this album are so good I’ve got to go 5 ⭐️.

I love this genre/period in music, but Eurythmics do it in a unique and original way; the clean, crisp synths complement the purity of Lennox's voice. The way she moves from note to note is like autotune without the autotune. I knew and loved the obvious ones already, but Jennifer was a great new discovery. I also like the Talking Heads-esque lyrics of This Is The House. Somebody Told Me made me look up when PiL released Rise (it was three years after this) - the intro is very similar! If you enjoyed Annie Lennox, try her early 90s album 'Diva'.
Who am I to disagree?

A sublime 80s enjoyment when playing with gender appearance wasn't already old hat. Annie's pipes are legendary. I was introduced to this album when they performed at the 1984 Grammys which I happened to watch with my parents. I was captivated by Dave Stewart's performance on the electric violin (an instrument I had never seen at a rock concert before) and Annie's Elvis Presley outfit, complete with sideburns. Features great synth and electronic production at time when it was not easy to both before MIDI became a thing. MIDI had only been introduced in the early part of 1983 before Stewart and Lennox put to work later that same year, meshing the sounds of Kraftwerk with soul and R&B that contributed to the formation of a new genre of artists that would become Romanticism 80s pop. This album would inspire many of the band and genres to come in the 809s and all the way to present.
Annie Lennox is a goddess who blows away the vocals.
I didn't know this was the name of the album too. I remember when this song came out it was a smash. This is my first time listening to a Eurythmics album. I always thought Annie Lennox's voice was great. If Sweet Dreams was released today it would still be a hit.
Mostly not my style but too cool not to love.
5 stars
Excellent!
Annie Lennox is the undisputed Queen of white soul. This is another example of the fact that we're living in a post-Eurythmics world. When this came out, it was a karate chop through the typical pop of its day. A classic.
I loved the album I had not heard all of the tracks before but I am glad I had the opportunity now
I feel silly I’ve gone so long not listening to a full album of theirs.
Pop perfection from early 80s. Lenox’s vocals shine and Stewart’s electronic confection musically is a Synth pop dream. A sweet one at that.
One of the greatest of time. Every song is art.
Amazing album for working, cleaning or just generally doing boring tasks - it's groovy, engaging and light, like a good 80's synth pop album should be.
I could go about this band and Annie Lennox, but I'll abbreviate my review: •Annie Lennox live (solo) was the best show of my entire life. I saw her at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium, and she could fill the venue with her voice at least three times over. That show was powerful. •I think Lennox is the best female vocalist due to her range, strength, and her ability to sing multiple genres. •Eurythmics are not so much pop as they are alt-new wave. I think that's why they were never really popular. •Lennox is Scottish and Stewart is English •Dave Stewart co-wrote Don't Come Around Here No More with Tom Petty. The Heartbreakers didn't want Stewart on the album (after all, he was British and the album was called Southern Accents, but the single was a huge success). •Lennox and Stewart were a great match and pushed electronic music to another level, and they were MTv video pioneers. •Lennox was gender bending before it was a thing. She wore men's suits and cross dressed more than once on MTv. No other female had done that before consistently on TV. •As a kid, I stopped in my tracks with mouth agape when I first saw Sweet Dreams on MTv. My little kid mind was blown to smithereens. My favorites from this album are Love Is a Stranger, I Could Give You (A Mirror), and Jennifer. Jennifer sounds like it could be in an 80s thriller-mystery movie, specifically Michael Mann's Manhunter. That film has neon hues, dark shadows, and ominous synth. I highly recommend it. (Plus, it's the first time we see the character Hannibal Lector on screen). I know this album and band aren't for everyone, but if you like 80s or modern synth, this album is definitely worth multiple listens. And as a side note, I absolutely adore Annie. She's a humanitarian and cares about the world. 5 stars.
Absolutely killer album that I need to listen to more often in my life
A great album with creative arrangements and killer vocals
Definitely some good songs on here. Sweet Dreams seems to get all the love. More people need to listen to the rest of the album. Something I've been noticing with a lot of these albums. How one song has over a billion listens and another song has under 100k is just wild. Listening to this twice straight through.
Part of the soundtrack for the 1980s. Contains some great tracks, the title track "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" obviously, but also "Love Is a Stranger", "Somebody Told Me", "This City Never Sleeps", and my favourite "Jennifer".
This has been an absolute favorite since it came out. So happy to listen to it today!
Awesome!
A delicious slice of 80s cake and about freaking time Annie Lennox showed up. A+
This album made a huge impression on me back in high school. I bought the cassette back in 1983 for Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This), but the entire album is etched in my mind. Particularly memorable is the title track, Love Is A Stranger, Wrap It Up, and The Walk. And I really love the ultra moody Jennifer - and how it is follow by the festive This is the House. Such a great pairing! Such a great 80’s classic. It’s good to listen to the album in its entirety again! TERRIFIC!

What can you even say?
Es un must. Love Is A Stranger , Jennifer, Satellite of Love.
Es un must. Love Is A Stranger , Jennifer, Satellite of Love.
Transcendental musically and vocally, showcases why the Eurythmics were one of the best acts of the 80's. 4.5/5
Absolutely flawless
Perfect
Pure 80's perfection.
Always fabulous Love Anne voice
This was a really revolutionary record and an exciting band at the time this album came out. The videos were really cool, and the sound was unusual, as was the songwriting. They had a brilliant career, and Annie Lennox went on to do some great solo work. I think this is the best Eurythmics record. I have been stingy with my fives but will give this a five as I think it's a solid nine on a ten point scale, and I'm rounding up because of how revolutionary everything was... the instrumentation, the look, the design of the album itself. It all felt NEW.
Certified BANGER! I fucking looooove the Eurythmics. They are the most 80's-ist thing of all 80s things and I truly enjoy everything about them. Annie Lennox is a goddess and I worship at the altar of her cool unbothered androgynous style and feminist badassery! I salute a legend and dance in her honour today.
Yeah you read that right, this is a 5 star album for me! I know that seems wild, but I truly every single song on this album brings something to the table. We all know the gigantic hit of a title track, and the Moody family members of the group are very familiar with Love Is A Stranger from years of mom’s mix cds in the car, but even songs like Jennifer or Somebody Told Me which sound like filler tracks at first end up building to a noisy satisfying conclusion. There are three big factors at play here: the production, the excellent songwriting, and Lennox’s incredible vocal performances. For the first point, if you didn’t listen to this through headphones, you did yourself a disservice. This was my first listen to the album as a whole and I was blown away by how the perfectly balanced and creative the mixing was. Synthesizers attack from every angle on the upbeat tracks while they fall into a lush ecosystem on the slower songs. The vocals rise and fall out of the mix as if they are another instrument fitting into their place with perfection. I appreciate this coming so soon after Culture Club because it really hammers home what the difference is between their generic sound va the Eurythmics’ unique tone. Second, I absolutely love the lyricism on this album. Moreso however, the synth lines stand out as unique and unmistakable. They have the darkness and grit of Dark Wave standards like Depeche Mode, but keep an airy lightness that transition smoothly into catchy choruses. It’s like everything great about the genre being put on full display. Third, not much I can say about Annie Lennox. If you hear her sing, you should get why she’s special. So yeah. 5 stars. Full disclosure I did rate the original release which ends with This City Never Sleeps (great closer by the way). I see there’s a 2005 rerelease with some bonus tracks but I’m not grading it on those (good thing too if the other bonus tracks match the quality of that Satellite Of Love cover).
Contains two of the best 80s singles with Love Is A Stranger and Sweet Dreams. It is not the perfect synthpop album, but the number of 5 star songs is such that I still rate it as a 5 star album, just like its two successors Touch and Be Yourself Tonight. 9/10
I had only heard the singles off this record; I was amazed at how much of this album I ended up liking!
Great
This album is made out of awesomeness.
The call and response at the beginning of wrap it up both gave me a jump scare and made me laugh. Jazz at the end of the walk is so cool. This album has a really cool vibe, feels like it takes me to a different place when I’m listening to it. The production also has a lot of cool layers, and I feel like I’m picking up new sounds on repeat listens. Sweet Dreams is a top 10 80s pop song for me. Wtf were they thinking with the Spanish in This is the House? Took me out of the flow of the album. Honestly, the whole album really falls apart after Jennifer. Which is a shame because the first 7 songs are an incredible run. This brings me to a philosophical decision, 7 songs I love followed by 3 utter disappointments. 25 minutes of music I love is good enough for me, and it helps that it’s consecutive so I don’t have to skip, I can just turn it off when I’m done. I’m gonna give it a light 5. Cover art: 9/10 did Kanye make this?
Loved it
GOD DAMN why are only one of these songs famous? dude more than half these tracks could’ve made them one hit wonders, they’re all so amazing 10/10
Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)
Excellent post punk alt record. Obviously banger title track
Played this album a lot when it came out 40 years ago (!). Not so much in recent years - and this has been a mistake. I didn't care for some of their later pop/rock stuff, but this is an excellent synth pop album.
Loved Eurythmics before this project. Still a great album.
Muy bien lograda la atmósfera del disco, lo disfruté bastante :>
Annie Lennox slaps
Love it
It's a bit unfair to ask me to be objective since this is one of my all time favourite bands and albums. Annie and Dave. What a team! The greatest since Beauty and the Beast. I could listen to this all day. Perfect production and perfect New Wave Synth. And what a voice she has.
cool
Milestone... !
Wrap it up is so strange and I like it a lot. Fuck yeah. I was dancing down the street to Sweet Dreams. I really never got sick of this. It’s weird. It’s dancy. Good for them.
Bangers all round , fantastic
Classic electro 80s sound
Better than expected. For once the title track isn't the best jam!
The ethereal beauty of Annie Lennoxs voice never ceases from taking my breath away every time.
I've been listening to this album for years now and it's always such a joy. Everyone knows Sweet Dreams, but there is a lot of other really great stuff on here (Jennifer, This is the House, Love is A Stranger). Really pure 80s perfection here.
Love the rythm and the instruments !
After listening to their debut effort I wasn't holding out much hope. I love Annie's voice (weapon) but found it had that repetitive dullness that colours so much euro-electronic stuff (that definitely includes the humdrum that is Bowie's Berlin trilogy). But they got their groove going in this one, retaining the experimental edge while truly displaying their rhythmic, melodic pop sensibility. Songs like Somebody Told Me have that hypnotic quality while being fun.
Great album.
Maravilhoso!
I still enjoy the ginormous hit and title cut off this LP, but I’ve also heard it so many times that I now tend to take its initial shock appeal for granted. It was helpful to revisit the song in the overall context of this excellent album. The lyrics, first of all, are haunting: ‘Everybody’s lookin’ for something. Some of them want to use you.’ Uh oh, my guard is up. ‘Some of them want to get used by you.’ Hmm, things are beginning to get a little weird. ‘Some of them want to abuse you.’ OK, now I’m downright uncomfortable. ‘Some of them want to be abused.’ Oh, my. If you just slowly read those five sentences, with the words emphasized in their proper places, it ought to make the hairs on your arms rise. Just as you’re trying to shake that off, Dave Stewart then gets his sulky rich synth hooks into you, and now you’re in his grasp. Until Annie Lennox reasserts herself to conclude the number with a powerful lead vocal melody, terrific backup harmonies, and even a surprising descant. The thing is, though, that’s just one great song dwelling within the company of others even greater. The LP opens strong with ‘Love Is a Stanger,’ ‘in an open car to tempt you in and drive you far away… Love is a danger of a different kind. To take you away and leave you far behind.’ Compelling lyrics, delivered with precise vocal harmonies, and accentuated with echoes and other effects. Dave is adept at these studio techniques throughout. It’s an agreeable pairing, these two. The next two songs feature a Latin infused electronica, ‘I’ve Got an Angel,’ followed by ‘Wrap It Up,’ an Isaac Hayes and David Porter composition, but I remember hearing it first from the 1960s soul duo Sam and Dave. (Three years following the Eurythmics, blues band The Fabulous Thunderbirds would also score a big hit from their cover.) The Eurythmics’ take finds Annie channeling the likes of Aretha Franklin, but again through the musical filter of purely synthesized accompaniments. The effect is rather interesting, too. It might immediately come across as somewhat dispassionate, but a deeper, longer listen will begin to reveal its soulfulness of a different breed. It’s an authentic union of modern electronic dance music with old school soul and R&B. But the birth is not a combination, where both are heard equally; rather, they mingle and mix together to create a whole new, third, creation: like yeast reacting to barley malt and yielding beer. Sweet Dreams is probably better accompanied with a very dry martini, but you get what I’m sayin’. By the time I was five songs in (still before the hit ‘Sweet Dreams’), I knew the album was both growing and growing on me. ‘The Walk’ is artfully arranged, and the dual play between Annie’s melodic, assertive femininity to Dave’s baritone background is tasty. ‘Jennifer,’ though (the song following ‘Sweet Dreams’), was this album’s real triumph. With the background sounds of an ocean breaking at midnight, the lyrics concern a girl/woman who is lost, and eventually found underneath the water. The music is perfect for this mystery. Are we talking murder here, or some kind of tragic accident? Tell me she didn’t take her own life? Questions unanswered that left me pondering hours later. Dave’s sparse, pounding synth beat is dynamically unsettling, then finishes with a high register synth solo effected by a strange buzz tone that sounds fiendish. By now, the last three songs were more than a confirmation of this LP’s ability to fire on all cylinders: ‘This Is the House,’ with Annie’s harmonies arranged and performed with creative brilliance, ‘Somebody Told Me,’ with a funky robotic ‘oh well’ refrain that builds in intensity along with the singer’s shock and mounting anger, and the conclusion, ‘This City Never Sleeps,’ with its successful transportation of the listener into the shared space of an overcrowded apartment in the inner city, and traveling among the desperate and poor in the ‘underground trains.’ The outro gradually stretched out to infinity, and when it faded, unresolved, I was yearning for more, but with a personal experience to reflect upon. Sweat Dreams accomplishes something that occurs, thankfully, from time to time in pop music- carving out a bit of a new path and inviting the rest of us to hop in for a little off-roading thrill ride.
Wow, I loved this. I only knew the title track. This album reminded me a lot of Lady GaGa and I'm here for it.

Sweet album, actually forgot to do this cause listening to that. Club movie
One of the best of the 80’s…loved this ..really forgot how much I appreciated this album….dancing the night away..good music….back in the day
Amazing
An old favourite that I used to enjoy dancing to with my sister when I was a child.
Great album , timeless!
Incredible. I have tons of nostalgia for this album and Eurythmics in general, and this album absolutely delivers
Es un must. Love Is A Stranger , Jennifer, Satellite of Love
Classic. Great music to zone out and drive to
Cracking bit of synth-pop, good, catchy tunes start to finish.
ну кароче мне зашло, даже чуть больше чем давид бови. Звучит разнообразненько, звук приятный

Fun and synthy - I like how versatile her voice is

So cool, so good
Ahhh! Gotta love the Eurythmics. Such great music and an unbelievable voice!
Childhood favourite - incredible

Easy Listening in my opinion. I enjoyed this album while I was working
Great album. Jennifer made me cry.
This, along with its same year successor (Touch) represents the final key albums of the original electro synth pop era from 1979-83. It was never quite a novel idea after sweet dreams hit no. 1 on both sides of the Atlantic. special mention should be given to 'Love is a stranger' which deservedly became a follow up hit after having tanked first time round. Annie and Dave certainly worked for their success, having had modest success as the Tourists and had a completely ignored Eurythmics debut album in 1981. Whilst not reaching the heights of the top stand out singles, this album is consistently good and doesn't have a 'dud' on it.
Intensely, violently 80s, including the cheese and fluff carried by all 80s music as baggage. Yet surprisingly good. Love Is a Stranger tells us immediately that we shouldn't take this band too seriously. Those synths are pure goofiness and I won't be convinced otherwise. The solo(?) at around 2:20 sounds like a bunch of little colourful puffballs bouncing whimsically around a grassy field. The guy grunting every bar gets extremely old, but with the context that the entire song is kind of a shitpost (or at least sounds like it is), I can live with it. Next is I've Got an Angel, a slightly bewildering song that again makes extensive use of droning, almost overbearing high synths. Plenty of "chaka-chaka-cha"s and other miscellaneous noises from the vocalist. Barely passable... but passable regardless. Wrap It Up is much better. A bold foray into disco. (I say this ironically. The disco genre was heavily oversaturated by the early 80s.) Then I Could Give You (A Mirror)... these people have learned the art of organic-sounding vocal harmonisation. And it's done very well. Huge props. The outro is also pretty great – relentlessly joyful, and is that a banjo in the back? Predictably, the star of the show is Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), an unfairly catchy snapshot of dance-soul with some solid synthy melodies and a pretty much spot-on song length. Jennifer – the song – strikes me as something ABBA might have released a couple years earlier. I would've liked to hear a few more chords than just I and IV, but ah, well. Still good. This Is the House is another slightly anonymous but still incredibly groovy dance number. Its biggest claim to fame is the loud, brash bassline that became a staple of popular music around this time. And it has longevity: you still hear plenty of popular music nowadays that uses similar techniques. (See Nightshift Superstar on Muse's recent album.) Somebody Told Me has the kind of overperformative vocal delivery you might hear from (80s) Freddie Mercury. Pretty good. 4/5 Key tracks: Love Is a Stranger, I Could Give You (A Mirror), Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)
I really don't think or like to think of myself as a particular fan of 80s synth pop but this stuff is sort of undeniable
Strong 4- wish I had a voice like Annie Lennox. Makes me want to explore. Ore of their back catalogue beyond the hits
A cut above most of the new wave of its time. The title track is of course a timeless classic.
Actually surprised by this album. Thought I was going to listen, digest, and toss as I have been doing lately. I have found myself less excited for the ride and less forgiving. I remember the title track and Annie Lennox from my childhood, but I can’t say I found them impressive. But this album is solid. Straight through to the cover of Satellite of Love, which is done well. 4 Boolean: True
Very good 80's Brit Pop.
A classic synthesizer-driven album. I'm old enough to remember when the title track was all over MTV. We were struck by the bending of gender norms with a female vocalist having a buzz cut. But what a vocalist Annie Lennox is!
Sweet Dreams (the title song) is excellent. I was surprised to find this album a little spotty. Liked all of it, but only loved the songs I already knew. Maybe that would change with enough listening.
I wish I could give this 3.5. But since it’s def better than a 3 . . .
Lover her voice
am i tripping or is sweet dreams one of the worst songs on this album. fantastic 80s synthpop aside from that song
Really enjoyed this blast from the past. Love Annie Lenox’s voice. The songs are definitely of their time and there are a couple of filler tracks, but in all an excellent listen.
Title track is truly great, but the rest of this album was pretty decent although a bit weaker. Great vocals with big range, pretty cool if not dated synths, overall 4/5
Great voice
Yeah this is good shit. Even ignoring the title track, the songwriting, production, and Annie's vocals are all excellent.
The rest of the album was fine, good even, quirky ... but I played Sweet Dreams 5 times on my drive home today. Those synth lines are so good.
Quite a lot of bangers on this. I don't even think the title track was the strongest.
Too synthy for some tracks. That one moment of flute flutter tongueing though. Love Annie.
Title track is fantastic, and there are some other great tracks as well. I'll listen again.
It's always a coin toss whether the major one-hit albums have significantly better or significantly worse songs than the major hit. This one lands closer to the latter. I like the 80s gay bar feel of some of the songs in the first half and the softer stuff towards the end. It's an album that pulls from some totally random things and makes it all work incredibly, mostly thanks to the singer. That woman can SING and the one major hit off this album doesn't do her nearly enough justice.
Very cool stuff
It’s really fascinating to listen
Great songs. Good to hear it again.
The title track is fantastic, though the rest of the album didn't grab me... on the first pass. On a second listening I enjoyed it a lot more
Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), the song, is an absolute banger, and this album could probably coast on that alone. Thankfully, it doesn't. There are several other neat songs here. I really enjoyed The Walk and Jennifer the most of the set, but they're all at least solid. Maybe a little too slow at times, if I had to give some critique.
I’m starting to understand that I like electronic, new wave type of stuff. Outside of the song everyone knows on this, I was able to enjoy the other songs, unknowingly just moving my hips to the beat! I really enjoyed Wrap it Up and The Walk. This House was a freaky ass song, though. Didn’t care for that one while I was alone. Solid work.
Quintessential 1980s neon synth-pop new wave.
#355/1001. I own many Eurythmics album but not this one. I guess the reason is either that a) nobody wants to sell it because of the title song, or b) the rest of the albums are crap or c) both of the above. But after listening to this I could easily swap out the others for this one. Anyone?
A legendary album. The Sound and atmosphere of the 80’s was proeminent in many songs, and besides the hit Sweet Dreams, i felt it in the first 3 and last 3 tracks. Almost a 5/5
Pretty good.
This album has spread from 3 to 5 depending which song are we talking about. I don't expect that every song has to be top-notch but "Monkey, Monkey" is too bad and too long to glide over it. One of the lower 4s.
I’ve rated albums down for being 80s-tastic. I haven’t done that here because most of those albums were ripping off things the Eurythmics did first. Does it all hold up? Nope. Did it move the needle? Yup.
Wonderful!
Love Is A Stranger and Sweet Dreams are all time great songs. I had never listened to this entire album and was struck how many fun the songs did not seem quite as polished. However, Annie Lennox being one of the greatest vocalists ever, covered up many of the shortcoming’s.
I like it. I don't know if I'll every listen to it again, but I like it.
Love this album. Classic 80s synth pop. My staple. Timeless and beautiful.
This stuff is great. Obviously I was familiar with the title track but I was so pleased that the rest of the album delivered in providing some really interesting, funky stuff. I can really hear the influence on the likes of St Vincent and Fever Ray amongst others. Also it was a great album to accompany on my first ever 10k run; the perfect mix of steady rhythms. Favourites: Love Is a Stranger I Could Give You (A Mirror) Jennifer Monkey Monkey
Good songs, novel sounds within the pop/dance style of the time.
Iconic song. Thought I would like the rest of the album more. Maybe not in the mood.
ohmygosh this is so fun. Sweet dreams are made of these is such a serious song -- glad there's some silly fun bops, too. some of these songs are too repetitive to be worth listening to on a daily basis, tho.
Annie Lennox er svo góð söngkona. Eurytmics voru með því besta í áttunni, Sweet dreams er einfaldlega stórkostlegt lag.
Eurythmics are often overlooked as a great band purely because the 80s electronica scene is mostly mocked. This is extremely 80s, and is the kind of music most people think of when that decade is mentioned, and albums like this are the reason why. There are a few fillers here, but the great songs are really very great. A great listen.
If the first half of this album was like the second half of this album, it would be five stars no question. It really is far better than it gets credit for. My second concert! I saw them in 1984. I probably haven't listened to this record in 35 years, I feel like if I gave it a couple more spins it might hit 5. Pretty much everything Annie touches turns to gold.
Have always enjoyed this album. "Love is a Stranger" should have been a bigger hit than "Sweet Dreams" ... there, I said it. I didn't enjoy as much a couple songs on the back half of the album, which keeps this from 5*, but it's a solid 4.
more than just Sweet Dreams... takes you back to the 80s with some deeper cuts that emote.
So very 80's in the best way possible. Sweet Dreams is THE song from the album. The rest is not as fantastic, but still great.
It took me a few listens, and it grew on me!
Pure 80ties vibes...
This is the type of new wave I like: sparse, open, with clear elements of punk and art rock.
Mycket coolt!
Very electronic. An essential electronic album of the 80's and in general. Definitely sounds like the album that influenced most electronic groups or musicians. Overall a pretty good album.
This is why I love older pop records. All these newer artists are just trying to make something that'll make it big on the radio. Some catchy tune that repeats ad nauseum with nothing to differentiate it from the next artist. Maybe it's just faux-nostalgia on my part but artists like Eurythmics and Modern Talking or more "modern" examples like Lady Gaga or the Black Eyed Peas have so much more personality than any artist on the radio right now. This album is so catchy while still experimenting with the electronic genre. I absolutely love it. There's a couple misses but I can sit through the album in one sitting without being exhausted or bored. Lennox's vocals are mystical. At times her melodies sounded akin to something Imogen Heap would go on to make. It's truly captivating. And don't get me started on the instrumentation. Bass lines out of this world, sweeping synths, and punchy drums. Everything you need for an album that gets stuck in your brain for years to come. Favourite tracks: I Could Give You (A Mirror), This Is The House 4/5
A solid album. The title track is the clear highlight here. It's a song that I'm pretty sure everyone has heard a million times before but that's because it is just a genuinely great, catchy pop song. There's some other solid songs here, especially in the first half but nothing comes close to the quality of that song. I wouldn't return to this in full, but I still think this is quite good overall. Fav Songs: Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This), Wrap It Up, Love Is A Stranger, This City Never Sleeps Least Fav: Somebody Told Me 7.0/10
Sweet dreams is obviously a classic but the rest of the album was also a treat, especially Love is a Stranger
Una primera mitad magnífica, luego le entra un poco de flato tras el title track, pero cierra bien. Muy disfrutable. También ne ha descubierto un cover de Satellite of Love buenísimo.
Love is a stranger & sweet dreams big hits here. But also some hidden gems, the city never sleeps. Unfortunately some jarring/clanky tunes make it a 4 star album
A very solid 4. I really enjoyed this album but it doesn't entirely deserve 5 stars.
80
Was undecided between a 3 and a 4. Will go with a 4 this time, but it struggled to keep my attention at the end. 4/5
Lovely synth pop with Annie Lennox’s dynamic vocal range. Sweet Dreams and Love is a Stranger are standouts, but the rest is a lovely synth vibe.
Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: /5
Actually, I didn't know that hit "Sweet Dreams" is from this album, so I was pretty surprised. But overall album is pretty good, my personal favs are: Wrap it up, I could give you (A Mirror), and Jennifer
Didn’t think I would like this one as much as I would, after the first listen. It was in the background, and although I found its beats relaxing, I didn’t feel very moved. Second listen I paid attention to the lyrics, everything resonated with me. It’s quite introspective and deep, without being too complex. The verses aren’t long and the choruses are usually just a few sentences spoken over and over. But they’re all catchy. The beats are tight and get my head bobbing. I feel like this album would be best experienced on cocaine.
An 80s classic, no? Sweet Dreams is obviously the more famous song, but I'd never heard the full album before and yet, aside from a few obviously 80s production, this stands the test of time thanks to the quality of the songs.
You are probably wondering if this album is only on the list because of the title track. Not a bad question. “Sweet Dreams” is such a singular and timeless song. Right into the first track, however, you will realize something more is going on. There is some good music here. Does it live up to “Sweet Dreams”? No. But, it holds its own—this came out in 1983 but stylistically you could fool someone into thinking it was released 10, 20, even 30 years later. I’m not a connoisseur of heavily synthesized music but the Eurythmics deserve at least 4/5.
I'm kind of stunned by how often I come back to this. I was wholly expecting for Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) to be a vehicle for the eponymous song, but much to my surprise, there's a like to like here. Imagine my further surprise when I've been listening to this for months since it generated for me. Annie Lennox has a great voice, and the sometimes dance-y, often synthy, and wonderful production by David A. Stewart is a match made in heaven. I get that people hear a hit or two often enough to dismiss an artist/group altogether, but this is one instance in which further exploration will yield much enjoyment. That's worth a 4, for sure. Highlights: "Love Is A Stranger", "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)", "This Is The House"
Some great Synth Pop to start my day. Nothing too exceptional beyond the title track, but the energy of the album is fantastic Favorite Songs: Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), Love is a Stranger
I love Annie Lennox's voice. This album is a sweet memory from the early days of MTV. Sweet Dreams has a haunting quality I've always loved.
I was prepared to find this interesting but not necessarily exciting. But I was pleasantly surprised by the variety and drama and confidence. Each track felt like it was coming from someplace new, and the mix of instrumentation, voice, and lyrics had energy, joy, and gravitas.
As a mood, this is wildly successful. As individual songs, nothing really holds up to the anticipation of when we're going to get to “Sweet Dreams”, one of the great songs of my lifetime.
After the 2nd listen I realized what happened: The album starts strong but then "I could give you a mirror" and "the walk" are weak fillers which made me zone out. Sweet Dreams brought me back and it was strong (and often tongue in cheek) until the end. Sad for the 2 weak fillers - otherwise a very strong album.
When I saw this album, I was anxious to listen because I thought it would be a good one! I can only think of 2 Eurythmics Songs I have heard- Sweet Dreams Are Made of This and Here Comes the Rain Again. And The Eurythmics have a lovely rendition of Winter Wonderland! I enjoyed Sweet Dreams Are Made of This. The rest of the album was worth a listen. Rating: 3.5/5
Movie soundtrack in the best possible way. Not my normal listening but great
I already mentioned that I find the sheer number of synth pop/new wave albums from the early 80s on this list annoying. However, if an act from this genre is to be mentioned, then Eurythmics' “Sweet Dreams” is a good choice. Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart are simply great musicians and on this album, even the songs apart from the well known singles are worth a listen. Still not exactly my cup of tea but this is as good as synth based new wave gets.
I only knew the title track, but the rest was good also.
when I was a kid, my parents played a fair amount of Annie Lennox. she was recognisable to my siblings and I. the first time I heard Eurythmics (I was about 10-12), I observed that they sounded "a lot like Annie Lennox". my sister was SO excited to tell me the news.
Annie Lennox is ALSO an international treasure. How do I get Kate Bush and Annie Lennox back to back? This album rocks, and Jennifer is almost as good of a song as Sweet Dreams, I said it!
A mixture of impressive synth, very skilled bass and beautiful vocals. This is a treat to listen to. The massive hit is the title track, which was banned from MTV because Annie Lennox did not appear as either female or male. Which I am sure catapulted the song into mainstream success. I really enjoyed this album and it reminded me of just how electronic the Eurythmics were as a band. Interestingly the stand out track for me was Jennifer. It feels like the soundtrack to any number of popular, 'set in the 80s', dramas. You can hear the inspiration for later Bat for lashes songs. (4.299)
It’s got such a nice 80’s sound to it
classic 80s album
Surprisingly good. Sounds exactly like LCD Soundsystem at times.
Great classics
Overall, a great album, and not one I expected to enjoy this much. Annie Lennox’s vocals mix perfectly with the music, and “Sweet Dreams” is an absolute banger.
Glad to know the rest of this album is actually great like the title track single. Awesome. Although sometimes this album will have its impeccibly produced and wonderfully sounding music wasted on songs that aren't interesting to me. But when it hits wow, like right when I pressed play I was hooked with that synth sound. Another high 4, I've been getting those a lot recently 🤔
People saying that the Eurhythmics sound "so 80s" are kind of missing the point that not only did they dominate the 80s with single after single, but the dark, sequenced bass lines; the programmed drum machines; the obsessional lyrics; the hi-gloss production all set the template for a whole genre of 80s pop. The two singles - Love is a Strange and Sweet Dreams Are Made of This - are so strong that they carry the rest of the songs which are, let's be honest, not nearly as good. Several aren't so much songs as extended jams, but with the power of Lennox's voice and the invention of Stewart's production they just about get away with it. Essential for an understanding of 80s pop.
I had not listened to a full album of theirs prior to this one. I enjoyed it as the synthesizer was not over the top and her voice sounds great with the variety on the album.
191/1001 Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ✅ Surprised at how much i enjoyed this to be honest, as I do enjoy the title track, but not enough to fully explore it and I really should have done so sooner.
Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) is SO GOOD that it unfortunately makes the rest of the album look worse by comparison. Enjoyed a lot of this. Was hoping to enjoy it more. 3.5/5, rounded up Songs added to playlist: - Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) - Jennifer - This City Never Sleeps
I mean its a vibe, right?
better than I thought
today i learned that annie lennox was the singer of this band. and i believe i may have heard sweet dreams by marilyn manson first back in the day? i enjoyed the album quite a lot during my minecraft session. i need to listen to it and pay attention properly. having done so: okay yeah this is great. ‘the walk’ is my favourite song so far. it sounds familiar so i must’ve heard it at some point. excellent production and quality of the songs. absolutely love annie lennox’s voice too. 4.5/5 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗
I can see how someone older would really enjoy this but it’s not for me. Reminds me of ABBA but not as good.
I think this is right on the edge of a 3 and a 4, but Sweet Dreams is such a good song that it carries it over to a 4. Overall there are a lot of good songs here, but also a noticeable amount of stinkers. I think Eurythmics offer a unique voice in the oversaturated sound of New Wave. Low 4.
J’ai vraiment apprécié l’expérience! Je suis hautement familier avec le top hit Sweet Dreams, mais je me serais pas attendu à aimer le reste du catalogue à ce point là, un peu comme l’album de Soft Cell et de Bad Company, « A diamond in the rough » genre
I really enjoyed this actually!
80's magic. never would have thought of listening to the whole album and i'm so glad i did
If you think this album will sound like the monumental synth-pop of its title track, then you're in for a surprise. In general it's altogether more influenced by Krautrock, with minimalist beats. The title track emerges from the minimalism like a collosus. It really is one of the finest songs ever put to record, with a detailed synth-riff, and showcasing Annie Lennox's (a kneelin' ox) next-level vocals. The other great distillation of synth vs offbeat melody is the lovely 'Love is a Stranger' an ambient rumination upon the concept of love, with a Bowie vocal pattern. When they lose the darker edge, like 'Wrap it Up' (turns out to be an Isaac Hayes cover), it doesn't work as well, although a more pop route suits them very well over the next few albums. It's a shame that the last couple of tracks are fairly lifeless, because overall the album is an interesting journey through some new-wave alternativeness. In spite of this, the first half of the album is strong - and with a couple of classics here it pushes into excellent territory.
I knew the hits really well, but I had no idea that the rest of this album was such a techno dance Masterpiece. So far ahead of its time.
Some great 80s nostalgia right here. There's a couple missteps, but it overall never loses its charm or my interest. The title track is, of course, the best, and the opener does a pretty good job in its own right.
3 or 4. Probably 4.
Really cool album full of interesting synth creations, considering the method the songs are very eclectic. Sweet Dreams is obviously the iconic stand out and nothing else really measures up, but some very cool tracks. A 3.5 for me, but bumping.
Some very good synth pop songs, but the thing that really stands out about this album is Annie Lennox's voice. That's a 5, the rest is a high 3.
This actually might be the most 80s album we’ve gotten. Only knew “Sweet Dreams” before this but it was solid all the way through.
Sweet dreams are made of cheese. Some great tracks on here. So ahead of their time and you have to love Annie Lennox.
I found myself surprised of actually like Sweet Dreams album. The type of pop I endure to listen to. Interesting way of building the songs, great playing, and then ofc topped with Annie Lennox. Annie seems to be such a cool artist.
In the past I would have classified the title track as a guilty pleasure. I used to abhor all forms of 80s pop music as I believed it was all shallow and vapid, but I still couldn't deny that Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) was a great track. Minimalistic drum programming, a simple synth and bass line, and just catchy as hell. Now, years later, I've expanded my taste in music considerably and I've been finding that I actually enjoy a lot of 80s music, this album included. I preferred the second half of this album to the first half; it was a little less pop-y dance music and a bit more weird and experimental synth-pop with some solid guitar playing. Either way, I definitely don't feel guilty listening to this any more.
I liked this a lot more than I was expecting. The titular track was the one I previously knew, but most of the others I like more. Some varied instruments and it’s the kind of fun 80s I enjoy
Always liked Anne Lennox voice. Was lucky to hear Eurythmics live in the early around 1990 and this takes me back to that concert!
Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) is one of the few synthpop hits even I can put on replay without being bored by it. I was very curious to check out the full album, which i hadn't done up until now. Great record, with many surprising moment, when that sax gets thrown in on a few song, chef's kiss. A very nice album everyone should check out.
Artier, more experimental, and more innovative than I expected. I love it. It evolves disco, pushes boundaries, and of course Annie Lennox is a force of nature. “Sweet Dreams,” deserved monster hit and a song I’ve loved since 1983, is one of the only radio-friendly tracks on this great album.
This album is almost exactly as old as my car give or take 30 days. Somehow this thing has aged better. Definitely not something you'd want to listen to if you're not in the mood for something bombaciously 80's. Lucky I was. I can only imagine how much cocaine the cassette case for this album has had one it. And yes the Spanish song sucked lmao.
I listened to this album pretty much after getting some really shitty news and I still liked it a lot. Annie Lennox is an exceptionally talented vocalist and I don’t think, despite some great and sleek production, that this album would be anywhere as good without her on here. This really could have been ‘the one big hit and then a bunch of forgettable shit’, and thankfully it was not. Highlights: Love is a Stranger, Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), Jennifer
Immediately transported to an 80s world of sync and catchy pop sounds. Yes for me.
I've been pretty depressed recently, and the albums it's been giving me haven't really been anything I've been interested in so its been a while since I actually did one of these. But I have really fond memories with the title track so I figured I'd check it out and it was really good. It kinda reminds me of Violater by Depeche Mode because nothing actually comes close to the hit, but everything else on there is really solid stuff. Favorites: I've Got an Angel, Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This), This City Never Sleeps
Now I'm wondering if I've never really heard any other Eurythmics song besides Sweet Dreams. I'm sure I did as they seemed to be on MTV a lot in the 80s. Anyway, this was almost entirely new to me. A little odder than I expected. But I'm down with it.
A classic!
‘Love Is A Stranger’, ‘I’ve Got An Angel’, ‘Wrap It Up’ and ‘I Could Give You (A Mirror)’, form a strong opening salvo. ‘Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of These)’ is of course the centrepiece, while ‘This Is The House’ is a Latin tinged banger, and ‘This City Never Sleeps’ serves as an excellent closer. An early ’80s synth-pop classic, it’s so much more than its iconic title track—dive in and discover it for yourself.
Shockingly good listen
surprisingly dope. favorite songs are Wrap It Up and The Walk. the nintendo 64 soundfont whips ass
This is a pretty cool record — one that reminds me just how weird and wonderful the ’80s could be. It’s full of strange textures, sharp production, and that icy, hypnotic groove that only the Eurythmics could pull off. Annie Lennox is just magnetic throughout, somehow both detached and soulful at the same time. I didn’t see that version of “Wrap It Up” coming, and honestly, it made me smile — a reminder that these songs weren’t afraid to take unexpected turns. The whole thing has this offbeat confidence that makes it stand out from the slicker pop of the era.
The title track is good of course and I liked Jennifer. Didn’t quite gel with the others, otherwise this might have got a 5
Actually fell asleep towards the end of this. But given its name and the fact that I was doing a crossword a midnight. Fair enough. Simpsons: Yes. I am watching you through a camera!
Enjoyed this actually
FAVO: Wrap it up, The Walk, Sweet Dreams, Jennifer, This City Never Sleeps
Great synth pop record
This sounded so strange and revolutionary when it came out. Really holds up well...
This is an iconic, genre-defining synth-pop album; I think what sets the Eurythmics apart from others is the edge on most of their songs. It's partly Annie Lenox's voice and intonation, but they also love a minor chord. It's a cool juxtaposition between the bright, happy sounding synth instruments and the brooding melodies they're playing.
All the songs up to and including the title track are great. This could’ve been an incredible EP. After that, kinda buns. I’d say that Annie Lennox is probably the Chappell Roan of her time.
Other than my synth-fatigue, I loved this. Fun and compelling composition. Annie Lennox’s voice captures your attention. The driving and danceable beats don’t disappoint.
I absolutely love Eurythmics and especially Annie Lennox. This album starts off with a classic New Wave song, "Love is a Stranger" and is just solid throughout. The title track is probably in the top 10 best songs from the 80's. Don't sleep on this one. 4/5
The best of Eurhythmics was a family staple sp I was pleasantly surprised about this - darker and weirder than just the hits, with more interesting sounds and Lennox as always on top form.
Yes! I like this a lot. Album tracks and all. The singles are stand out bangers I have heard and played a million times, and not tired of. It feels accomplished for a first album. I feel I would listen to the album as a whole again and will probably come back to some of the album tracks in their own right. I've Got An Angel, Jennifer, This City Never Sleeps. This is bold and bright. Strong, emotional pop. Sad and ecstatic. Great vocals. Some cool instrumentation (although also a few moments where it's a bit sleasy/much). More of an album album than I anticipated.
Would happily pop this on again. Was fun to actually listen to the album and not just the singles. Could see this as a car ride jam.
Most of the songs on this album waffled between a low 3 and a low 4, buoyed mainly by Lennox's vocals. But Sweet Dreams is probably enough to push the album into 4 territory overall.
Like Tina Turner's Private Dancer, this album is admittedly dated - but Annie's vocals repeatedly put it on another level. Besides the monster single everyone knows, added 'Love is a Stranger' and 'I Could Give You A Mirror' to my 80s playlist.
# Album Name: Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) # Artist: Eurythmics # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: A very enjoyable album for those 80s synth pop fans. Annie lennox has a cracking voice. The keyboards are solid on this album. Theres two standout songs for me - Sweet dreams and Love is a stranger. Both complete bangers. The album is backed up by other mid/good tracks which take a bit more of a listen to enjoy. Solid 4 imo. Doesnt reach the heights of a 5 though. # Top Tunes: Love is a stranger / Wrap it up / Walk / Sweet dreams / This is the house / somebody told me # Would I listen to it again? Yes
Bunch of good ones on this album. I had this one back to back with World Clique from Deee-Lite, which, actually went well together. Maybe I'm just a fan of these 2 albums, or maybe they're just actually both good.
Okay! Nice tonal qualities and vocals. Maybe relevant for the period. 3.5 scoring at 4.
I was really surprised by this album. I thought for sure that it was gunna be a classic case of an untouchable legendary song is holding up the whole album, and it kinda is in the sense that it casts a huge shadow over the rest of the album. But there are plenty of real hidden gems on this album. Sure it had a few skips, I’d say the biggest chunk was the let down after “This City Never Sleeps” there wasn’t anything after that song that I felt was memorable until the very last track. So honestly this album might’ve been a 5 if it had trimmed down alittle bit. But honestly this album was a pleasant surprise, if you are a big fan of LCD Soundsystem like I am, you will see a lot of inspiration and similarities in a few songs. Seriously don’t sleep on this album.
Always thought the hits were great but had never actually listened to an album before. The hits do stand out and it is surprising clubby.. it’s still good though
I was still young when the Eurythmics movement hit to really understand what kind of impact they were making. Listening now I get! There’s a futuristic quality yet something retro simultaneously that makes it both in and transcends time. Annie Lennox is one the generations greatest singers, with her Bowie-esque androgyny both vocally and physically. And Dave Stewart’s orchestrations could stand on their own without her singing with them. Love is a Stranger reminded me of Florence Welch. This is the House, with its very funky bass line and Gaelic singing I think was my favorite track but not at the expense of credit to Sweet Dreams, which permeated ‘80s pop radio. I could and will listen to this album again. The deep cuts are so much better than the radio play.
An important part of trying new things is, even after making most of your way through something, admitting that it's not for you. And that's this album as a whole for me. Sweet Dreams is special as hell, though. That song is a gift to the entire world. I would listen to it for an hour on repeat. There are other moments that I personally like in some of the other songs, so it's not like I'm hating what I'm hearing. I just know that this falls pretty far outside my personal tastes. I do recognize that this is a pretty great album, though. In another world, in another life, I probably love this album. But instead, I will choose to recognize this is pretty great but not for me. Favorite Song(s): Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), Jennifer
The date of release says early 1983, but I know I heard some of these in 82. Such a great band, such an iconic sound, eventually we got some mind blowing MTV videos, they were the perfect package, though this wasn't a perfect album it was darn close.
Iconic track that put the duo in the conversation. Song made one want to hear what else these two could come up with…did not disappoint.
Annie Lennox has one of the voices in recent memory. Great slbum
Every tune was grooving with a great rhythm. Really noticing the synthetic drums and very inspired by them.
+1 Annie Lennox
The moody synth creates a wonderful atmosphere throughout. It sounds of its time without sounding too dated, which is always a risk with early '80s electronic music. There's a richness to the synths which is endearing, rather than cheap-sounding.
Was quite impressed by how it defied my expectations. Fully expected a one track album, and its not even the most interesting. Also expected a full heavy synth 80's sound and its a bit more diverse than that, some rock and jazz élément which makes it fine
This rocks, darker and more moody than I thought it would be. Like a more minimal and grown up and stripped down Siouxsie and the Banshees. Legitimately awesome. Some of the songs are forgettable but overall very good.
Title song is a classic. The other songs don't come close to the greatness, but make a good attempt. It's all a very unique sound, especially for the early 80s.
nebst Sweet Dreams und Love Is A Stranger nicht viel ernsthaft zählbares. Aber der Sound passt, und stimmlich ist Lennox top!
It's silly to think how as a little middle school metalhead I hated this so much - such an affront to "proper guitar-based ROCK" haha whatever. Mature me: it's super-creative and for the time very unique - it's kind of hard to put into today's world because especially that title track is just like a "classic rock standard" which is hilarious because it was so out of the known-universe at the time. Have to admit that the video and androgynous looks of Annie Lennox absolutely contributed to its success, too... I'd never listened to the entire album before and "Wrap It Up" completely threw me since I always thought it was a Fabulous Thunderbirds song (1984/5?) but it's originally a Sam & Dave tune. Huh. The more you know... While it's not an all-killer no-filler album, there are no bad songs - just a few ehh unmemorable ones - and actually after a 2nd full listen it's really is a "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts" kind of album which I fully appreciate. Having said that I would tap "Somebody Told Me" as my favourite; just weird in a fun/mysterious way with non-traditional arrangements, a bit of Laurie Anderson comes to mind. Not necessarily a favourite but with a few fantastic tracks and that overall album feel and sound I really enjoy, it's a keeper. 7/10 4 stars.
I think Annie Lennox was the *only* female UK vocalist in the 80s right? That said, this is a delicious slice of synths and powerful vocals. Was never a huge fan of the title track, but the opener (Love is a Stranger) ticks ALL the boxes. Bleeps and bloops, husky vocal, shrieky vocal. Splendid
Wonderful, though still think her best is with Eurythmics
First half was weak, basic af, second half comes on strong!
erste Lieder elektronischer Sound und groovy disco vibes. i ve got an angel mit indianischen Instrumenten The Walk mit coolen jazz Einflüssen Sweet dreams natürlich absolut legendärer Song Jennifer ziemlich experimentell eine coole reise The city never sleeps guter Abschluss underplayed: I ve got an angel, wrap it up, the walk overplayed: Love is a stranger
I was just a bit too young to properly appreciate them at the time, so it was good to hear this one and find that they were just as good on their album tracks as their iconic singles
Very good album that feels more substantial and influential for the time than this far after. However, it is pleasant, and it should be viewed as one of the bridges between the early electronica of the 70's into what became New Wave and Post Punk in the 80's.
I get why sweet dreams was the hit chosen for this album with that synth motif but 80% of this album probably could've been dominant on the airwaves while still feeling advanced when it came out. Great album with few misses.
Enjoyable 80s new wave music with a tasteful amount of synths
Classic album with a banger of a lead single! 4/5
Sweet joy
Obviously the title track is iconic. One of my fave songs. Classic synth-pop. Fluid and funky. Bit repetitive though.
Good. Haven't listened to that in a long time. Some lasted the test of time, of it aged poorly.
Vocals are very impressive. The synths and keyboard create a very enticing, dark, and mysterious environment. Obviously the title track is by far the most famous, but the rest of the album is worth listening. I Could Give You (A Mirror) has the fun repeating synth riff. This Is The House has a meaty bass line and some delightfully strange lyrics. Is that a Theramin on Somebody Told Me?
This was great, but I found it a little less engaging than I was hoping. I still listened to it twice, but I was a little disappointed. Four stars.
Enjoyed this.
A aparece electronic pop album which really focuses the ears on Annie Lennox’ extraordinary voice.
This is really one of those albums where the hit single does a disservice to the rest of the album. Listen to it all several times through and odds are that you'll still just remember one song. And clearly that's because it's a brilliant song. It's catchy and its survived the test of time to remain a classic of the era. It's possibly one of the best songs of the 80s. But is it a great album? It's unique, sure. There's a particular mix of synth pop and post-punk that's more interesting than a mere one hit wonder. The androgynous lead singer also clearly turned heads, simultaneously challenging sexism and gender roles in the music industry. But again, you could pretty much heap all of that praise on the title track. Do you need the rest? I really can't decide if it's worthy of this list as a whole album. But that one song really does stand out and I'm feeling generous.
Classic Eurythmics, full of singles
I started off without anything to really say about it. Nothing stood out through my first listen except the singles i knew. After 3 or 4 listens I get it. The whole album is a cohesive collection of synth pop and rock that will definitely add to my playlists. Standouts are “Wrap it up,” “Somebody Told Me” and of course, “Sweet Dreams”
A bit more interesting and less garish than I was anticipating. 3.6/5
Actually loved this a lot - when the horn solo comes in during The Walk.....woof. The stank face I made on the train definitely caught some eyes - but it was so worth it. Something i'm learning here - I like 80's music far more than I anticipated. It's just i didn't know what 'kind of 80's' music I liked. More like this
Volim kad se ispostavi da ovakvi albumi nisu samo najveći hitovi, nego da ima kvalitete i u ostatku.
Pre-listening thoughts: I'm sort of shocked to see this on the list. I always kind of assumed the title track was their only big hit. Kind of like the Human League album. But I know Annie Lennox has had a great career of her own so maybe there will be some gems in here Post/during listening thoughts: This is actually pretty good! It's not really sticking with me as much as I'd have liked it to (I listened twice) but the production on here is quite nice. Annie Lennox has a lovely voice. Most of these songs are really good. I just am having a hard time remembering what I've heard. 7.5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: nah Fav tracks: Wrap It Up, The Walk, Sweet Dreams Least fav tracks: n/a
Inte alls så fantastisk som jag mindes den. Även om vissa låtar fortfarande flyger. Fyra minus
another "time and place" record – for the most part, it has this distinctly 80s synth sound, which is fun but not timeless. songs that stand out (sound-wise, but also other reasons): love is a stranger (strong opening) sweet dreams (I've heard it way too many times before) jennifer (nice song). bonus: the cover of satellite of love (great song as well) the middle of the album for me kind of lumps together into the wave of sound where I can't really distinguish between the different songs. but it's a well-made album nonetheless 3.5
The title track of this album is a staple when it comes to new-wave music, and having finally listened to it all the way through (yes, I'm only really familiar with those first few seconds), I've realized just how incredibly varied the whole song is, and I love how heavy those synths come in during the instrumental interlude. The entire song is so epic, despite the number of times I've heard that chorus. I feel this entire album is very underappreciated; I don't hear much about it. It sounds like a lot of new wave and new romantic albums on the surface, but there is something so slick and almost modern-sounding about the way the whole thing is constructed. It's less in your face and far more subdued and moody, similar to groups like Depeche Mode, but I'd argue even moreso. The songs are slow and careful, establishing these very heavy and hypnotic kick-driven grooves. 'The Walk' may be the best example of this, the way the vocal layers develop alongside that cacophonous sax overlay sounds beyond this genre. I also really liked the slower 'Jennifer', which establishes this very ominous core groove, that's beautifully juxtaposed by those more optimistic keys. Also, that layer of distorted guitars in the outro is mesmerizing. And the warped synths of 'Somebody Told Me' give off heavy EDM vibes, weirdly enough. On top of all that, Annie Lennox is an incredible vocalist in this genre; she's capable of adopting so many different styles. She has this very deep and fluttery delivery on the opener 'Love Is a Stranger', but can just easily flip into something darker on 'Somebody Told Me' or something playful like with the funkier 'This Is The House'. Some of the coolest and most forward-thinking new romantic I've heard - some of this music can easily be mistaken for a lot of the pop music that would be heard decades down the line.
I very much enjoyed this album! Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) is such an iconic song so I was excited to give this album a listen and it didn’t disappoint. I would listen to this again and recommend it to others!
Never really loved the Eurythmics but good to hear them from a nostalgic perspective
I think the album is very uneven, swinging from really great songs to cheesy white 80's funk. The good stuff is incredibly good and the bag stuff is still ok enough that I didn't actively hate it.
I mean it has everything I could ask for. Had never listened to Jennifer before, what a tune. Or the Satellite of Love cover! Ace. Torn between 4 and 5 stars.
++: Wrap It Up, I Could Give You (A Mirror), The Walk, Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), This Is the House, Somebody Told Me +: Jennifer, This City Never Sleeps +-: Love Is a Stranger, I've Got an Angel 8,5/10
Good writing, original and entertaining, great vocalist, good instrumentation. I like it!
Listened to this one taking the ferry into Seattle. The sun was rising behind the city and the Cascades, while Mt. Rainier was out, clear as day, towering over to the right. Each song felt perfect for the experience, and I'm grateful to have gotten it today. Not a perfect album and a bit dated, but fit my morning very well. 4/5
Pretty awesome 80s synthpop record. With likely the most famous synth song ever.
Solid new wave. Definitely see how this album inspired many modern albums and artists like Saint Vincent
Very very decent. What a voice. What a charismatic lady. Great production
